DIRECTOR'S NOTE DRAMATURG'S NOTE Many of us have spent the last few years feeling difficult emotions grief, loss, tragedy, and above all, love. Love is an emotion that can persevere through hardships and is something that we can rely on when times get incredibly difficult. This play tells the story of a woman who experiences and must balance all these emotions. Through her and the rest of the characters, we are given an opportunity to feel these same emotions and address them as scary as that may be. While this play isn’t about the pandemic, its themes relate to us because of our shared human experience. While we may go through hard times in our lives, there is always something to look forward to and something or someone to love. It’s these themes and the strong relationship Eurydice has with her father that make me grateful for the strong connection I have with my family and those I love. Having someone to turn to when times are tough is a truly amazing gift, and one that I am grateful for. I love this play, I love this company, and I appreciate you all for joining us for the play you’re about to watch. I hope you enjoy.

Marty Bernier Director, Eurydice

DRAMATURG's NOTE DRAMATURG'S Eurydice is a play about love and grief. These two feelings are perhaps the two most well understood in human existence. What we see in Orpheus’s journey, in Eurydice’s discoveries, in our own lives, are our most basic instincts: to care for others, and to grieve them when they’re gone. Love continues even when people have passed, as Orpheus’s does. The poets Virgil and Ovid wrote about Orpheus’s love and journey to find his love again, but they barely mention the object of that love, Eurydice. Surely, she was doing something while Orpheus was on his journey, but we wouldn’t know anything about it from the poets’ accounts. For the most part, she is simply referred to as “the wife.” Sarah Ruhl tells a story that reflects on connecting with those we have lost. In doing so, she reminds us that as important as love and grief are, so is healing. What would you say to someone who you thought you had lost? And would you call out to them?

Jessica Singley Dramaturg, Eurydice
