DRAMATURG'S NOTE Everyman is a late 15th-century Christian morality play that follows the character of Everyman on his search for salvation after hearing of his impending death. The play emphasizes the universality of death and reminds its viewers to examine their life choices before it’s too late. Everybody tells the same story, but in a new way. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins adapted the original text for a contemporary audience, adding a new convention: a lottery that randomly assigns actors to play certain characters for each performance. While this means a great deal of memorization and commitment for the cast, it also emphasizes the original play’s theme of chance: We could die at any moment, whether we’re prepared or not.
Alexandra Nohemy Berrios Dramaturg Workshop of Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Dance of Death (Imago Mortis; Totentanz; Danse Macabre). p. 1, https://jstor.org/stable/community.12262252. The Warburg Institute Library.
DIRECTOR'S NOTE DRAMATURG'S NOTE “I am a different Self from your Self. How is it so hard to understand that I am not your Self? Why does the reality of that seem to throw people into crisis?” —Everybody, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins How does accepting mortality relate to accepting difference? Branden Jacobs-Jenkins highlights resistance of both kinds in this theatrical exercise in letting go. Everybody is based on the 15th-century Everyman, but mostly it deals with who we are as “Somebodies”today—yearning for community while fighting against it. Why is it so hard to prepare for death—our own, or someone else’s? Learning to die “well” might help us live better, too. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins reinvents the Wheel of Fortune—an Ancient Roman concept adopted by Medieval Christians to cope with unexpected suffering and loss. What can we learn about empathy by giving up control? In this production, we’ve examined how racial privilege informs shifting character relationships and conversations about race. Assistant Director Josiah Arnett used theater games in rehearsal to explore difficult themes while promoting safety for the ensemble. His contributions to our process have been generous, insightful, and invaluable throughout. Everybody needs community. Thank you for taking part in ours!
