THE HUNCHBACK OF SEVILLE was developed at the Brown / Trinity Playwrights Repertory Theatre

2013 season under the artistic direction of Kenneth Prestininzi.

THE HUNCHBACK OF SEVILLE was originally produced in June 2014 by Washington Ensemble Theatre.

THE HUNCHBACK OF SEVILLE is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing, LLC, servicing the Dramatists Play Service collection. (www.dramatists.com)

Charise Castro Smith does something exceedingly difficult with her play The Hunchback of Seville: she manages to frame one of the most tragic and bloody episodes in world history – the conquest of “The New World” and the decimation of its original people through the lens of farce and wild historical revisionism. For every belly laugh her words, characters and situations invoke, she stealthily plants sharp gut punches reminding us of the harsh reality of the world surrounding Maxima’s cloistered room in her tower. The play, through its deft collision of “period” language with modern and at times anachronistic vernacular remind us that all of us, for better and for worse, are inheritors of the legacy that began when Columbus first set foot in the New World. In a powerful sense, as Maxima, or play’s protagonist, grapples with the question of what role she ought to play in this New World, the play asks this of us as well. As inheritors of a legacy rooted in both the darkest aspects of human nature as well as the promise progress towards justice and righting the wrongs wrought by that darkness, we, like Maxima, must ask: what role do we play in shaping the future of our world?

It’s been a great pleasure working with these talented, passionate, and dedicated young artists to bring this joyful and dark story to you.

DIRECTOR'S
NOTE

DRAMATURG'S NOTE

In 1492, Christopher Columbus brought ninety men and three ships to an island in the Americas. He renamed this island ‘Hispaniola’, where the Spanish Empire would begin to spread across the Americas and the genocide and exploitation of the native Taíno people would begin. While colonizers have perpetuated the idea that Taíno culture became extinct after the genocide, this is a myth that only benefits the colonizers’ narrative. While some oral tradition was lost to time, some was also passed down to the descendants of survivors. These descendants experienced a paper genocide, or an attempt to erase a group of people in legal documents. Taíno people who were forcibly taken to Spain were typically reclassified as other groups, for various reasons, and those who did successfully survive and escape often did not exist on Spanish legal documents. While the effects of the genocide have been long-lasting, the culture is still alive, and the living people in Taíno communities are still doing the work to reclaim what the survivors of Spanish genocide left behind.

Catholicism was also at the center of Seville in 1504 for people of all socioeconomic classes. Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand were deemed Catholic Monarchs by Pope Alexander VI, based on their personal lives as well as the state-sponsored cruelty to those who did not adhere to the Catholic faith. The state’s Catholicism that Isabella and Ferdinand enacted was used as a reason for both the genocide in Hispaniola and violence within the nation. The Spanish Inquisition allowed for forced conversion, exile, torture, and public punishment. Many people risked harsh penalties to practice their religion in private. Religiously motivated violence fuels no shortage of pointless bloodshed and avoidable trauma, even among those who intend to be pacifistic.

The Hunchback of Seville’s take on this era of history shows several sides of the events it adapts, and the horrific results of religious oppression and genocide are given significant gravity. The incompetence and near-sadism of the monarchy is satirized to comedic effect, highlighting the callousness behind the decisions made. While some of the events are exaggerated—for instance, Juana’s mental health was used as a political tool to abuse her, rather than giving her effective free reign as a princess or queen the pointless brutality to the point of stupidity reflects the truth. By the close of the sixteenth century, the rulers that followed Queen Isabella left Spain close to economic ruin due to irresponsible policy related to inflation, war, colonization, and imports from the Americas. The exploitation of power for cruelty’s sake is a theme that runs deep throughout the narrative.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

At the place George Mason University occupies, we give greetings and thanksgivings to these Potomac River life sources, to the Doeg ancestors, who Virginia annihilated in violent campaigns while ripping their lands apart with the brutal system of African American enslavement, to the recognized Virginia tribes who have lovingly stewarded these lands for millennia including, the Rappahannock, Pamunkey, Upper Mattaponi, Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Nansemond, Monacan, Mattaponi, Patawomeck, and Nottaway, past, present, and future, and to the Piscataway tribes, who have lived on both sides of the river from time immemorial.
