Director’s Notes “Dusty boots, now rest awhile We are not strangers In fact, I know you well.” - Elizabeth Swados——

Our second rehearsal of Runaways was a crowdsource dramaturgy day, which is a fancy way of saying the students researched different aspects of the piece to share with the cast. After two hours of depressing information about homeless youth, it became very clear why we had to tell this story and why we had to tell it now. In 1978, when Elizabeth Swados wrote and directed Runaways, there were roughly 400,000 homeless children in the United States. In 2020, before the coronavirus, that number was 2.5 million. We have a responsibility to raise awareness of the enormity of this issue and tell these children’s stories. All the inspiration from this piece came from actual interviews Swados conducted with homeless youth in New York City. These stories are heartbreaking but there is also so much joy. While dealing with their hardships, the “runaways” just ask to be kids and play. We have the privilege of telling these important stories for the children who lived them. There are so many unique voices to be heard in this piece and so many styles of music to share. The show speaks in three different languages, English, Spanish and American Sign Language. Ultimately, the runaways are crying out for connection. We can all relate to that desire in our pandemic world. We are also appreciative of our production team for making an outdoor, live performance possible so that the cast can connect with you. This cast and crew has poured its heart into making this special show come alive. So please enjoy this live connection to the stories of our runaways. --Erin Gardiner

Please consider helping the cast of Runaways make a difference locally. Casa Ruby is an LGBTQ bilingual and multicultural organization in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area that provides social services and programs catering to the most vulnerable in the city and surrounding areas. They offer a wide variety of programs and services, ranging from emergency housing to non-medical case management. We as a cast have chosen to campaign for this organization in honor of the vulnerable stories we tell in our play. You can use the link below to donate directly to this organization. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
