THE SOLOISTS TERESA JENKINS is a senior at George Mason University pursuing a Bachelor Degree in Clarinet Performance with a Minor in Arts Management. She is a native Long Islander who began playing clarinet at age nine. Beginning in elementary school and throughout high school, Teresa successfully earned near perfect scores in an annual statewide solo competition known as NYSSMA, and found herself twice as the principal clarinetist in both the SCMEA and NYSCAME All-County bands. Throughout her time as a student at George Mason University, Teresa has performed with the Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony, Mason Symphony Orchestra, and the Mason Pit Orchestra, and currently resides as the President of the George Mason University Clarinet Choir named Patriot Reeds. During the summers, Teresa prefers to keep busy with summer music engagements. Some past endeavors have included Sewanee Summer Music Festival, ARIA Clarinet Academy, The Clarinet Conservatory of New York, and the Buffet Crampon Summer Clarinet Academy. Aside from playing clarinet, you can find Teresa serving her student body through an elected leadership as an active member and President of Sigma Alpha Iota, an international Women’s fraternity that supports women in music. Outside of these musical activities, Teresa is a dedicated scholar. Her most recent scholarly endeavor was in pursuit of a research grant through the Undergraduate Research Scholars Program through the George Mason University Office of Scholarship Activities and Research (OSCAR). During the Spring 2021 semester, she was awarded funding for her Summer 2021 project entitled “A Concise Guide to Underrepresented Clarinet Literature: Chamber Music Edition.” Her project included research which resulted in her adding accessible, performable, and quality wind chamber literature written by BIPOC, Women, and LGTBQIA+ composers to the George Mason University Clarinet Literature Library. Teresa will be graduating in the Spring 2022 and is excited to announce that she will be attending the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory for her Master Degree in Clarinet Performance and a graduate certificate in Arts Management. Teresa would like to give a few special shout-outs and thanks to her professor, Dr. Kathy Mulcahy, for all her time and dedication she has put into her education, and to Mark Camphouse, for all his support and the amazing opportunity to play as a soloist with the Wind Symphony tonight. Lastly, she would like to thank her parents, Alan and AnnMarie, for their unwavering love and support, as well as her sister, Alanna, for her constant encouragement and lightheartedness.

THE COMPOSERS CATHERINE FIELDS (b. 2000), a native of Northern Virginia, is a junior Composition major at George Mason University. She studies Composition with Professor Mark Camphouse and Piano with Dr. Anna Balakerskaia. Catherine became serious about piano in high school thanks to a teacher who was highly influential to her, Olga Teutler. About two years into her studies with Ms. Olga, she developed a love for composition, and started composing small pieces for piano. When she began her undergraduate studies, she quickly broadened her output to choral settings of sacred texts, popular song, chamber music, and solo instrumental repertoire. She received her first song commission from Mason’s own Professor Joseph Walsh in 2021, “The Hand and the Light,” for which she performed and recorded the vocals and piano accompaniment. In addition to this, Catherine loves to share her passion for music and teaches piano and composition to 14 young students. She is completing her minor in Neuroscience and has a wide range of non-musical interests. She enjoys reading on many subjects, and especially admires the writings of Carl Jung, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Joseph Ratzinger. She delights in nature and the outdoors and finds birds to be especially evocative. Catherine takes some of the greatest pleasure in cooking and baking for her friends and loved ones. She seeks to bring this personal touch into her music, assuring her audience that, like her culinary creations, her music is certainly “made with love.” The Fantasy for Piano and Wind Symphony is Catherine’s first large ensemble work. It is inspired in part by the memoirs of the aviator, writer, and poet Antoine Saint-Exupery, and in other parts, by various stories told by pilots and adventurous souls whom she’s encountered personally. The piece uses the concept of the “Fantasy,” a form which gives way to the composer’s imagination, freely wandering musically and thematically, and connects it to the experience of flying. During the Romantic period, the archetype of “The Wanderer” – which often went in tandem with the “Fantasy” – represented a person who felt a stranger wherever he went. The theme of the “Wanderer” can be heard in the first solo entrance of the piano. It returns in the second movement, transformed into something more contemplative. In this piece, Catherine attempts to capture not only the exhilaration and profound beauty of soaring through the heavens, but also the loneliness that may haunt someone who is never in one place for long. A pilot must have tremendous trust in his instruments and craft. Because any of these things could fail fatally, the contemplation of life and death is also a theme in this piece. The second movement evokes the unease of flying over a large body of water at night. The slow, deliberate beginning of the movement feels as though it is suspended in the air, only drifting, as an ascending motive makes gradual entrances. The ascending motive is then juxtaposed with the Lux Aeterna Gregorian chant from the Requiem Mass (played by the piano), almost like a prayer for light to scatter the strangely inviting darkness. The low brass come in, roaring to depict the depth of the water, an abyss that could swallow you instantly. Throughout the piece there are many images and moods that she wishes to leave to the listener to

interpret. Perhaps the mind of the pilot is wandering too, yearning for some imagined home, or remembering a love from the past. One thing is for certain though: at the end, when the Lux Aeterna takes its final form as a resplendent fanfare, the light does not merely illuminate the darkness, but shatters all fear. KENT BAKER is a Music graduate of George Mason University, where he studied music composition with Mark Camphouse and is currently pursuing a Master Degree in Music Education at Liberty University. An Illinois native, he was the Director of Bands at Central Catholic High School in Bloomington, Illinois, and a hornist for the Peoria Symphony Orchestra. He recently retired from The United States Air Force Band, DC where he was a hornist, assistant Drum Major, arranger, and composer for 23 years. Kent’s works have been featured on NBC’s The Today Show 15 times, Fox & Friends, The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Presidential Inaugurals, Twilight Tattoos, Flash Mobs, The USAF Band 75th Anniversary Concert, and the Kennedy Center Honors, and have been recently performed by the George Mason University Symphony Orchestra, The Beltway Brass, Oklahoma City University Wind Philharmonic, Quintessential Brass Repertoire, The St. Louis Brass Band, and Barclay Brass. Kent’s works have won numerous awards, including recent winners Scenes from an American Childhood, winner of the District New Music Composition Competition (2020); The Eternity Gate and Land of the Free, Home of the Brave, and The Tannhauser Gate, winners of the 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020 Dallas Winds Fanfare Competition; The Common Good, winner of the 2017 Bay Colony Brass’ Composition Competition; The Bearer of Evil Tidings for Solo Horn, winner in 2017’s Fifteen Minutes of Fame Contest and the reNEW Music Micro-Commission (2020); 75.29.30, a winner in the 2016 United States Air Force Media Contest; and Wichita Falls, After the Rain for Orchestra, winner in the 2015 Musica Merida Composition Competition. His works have been included on USAF Band CDs Home of the Brave and Breaking Barriers. Kent is a 2020 Composer-inResidence with the Westben Composer/Performer Residency in Campbellford, Ontario, Canada, as well as a finalist in the 2020 North State Orchestra Composition Competition with his work Archetypes (results pending in May). Recent consortiums include the Carolina Chamber Consortium and the Fairfax County Digital Consortium. He is represented through ASCAP.

THE CONDUCTORS PROFESSOR MARK CAMPHOUSE A product of the rich cultural environment of Chicago, composer-conductor Mark Camphouse was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1954. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees in music from Northwestern University, where he studied composition with Alan Stout, conducting with John P. A scholarship from the Civic Orchestra of Chicago enabled Camphouse to study trumpet privately for two years with legendary Chicago Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Adolph Herseth. Camphouse began composing at an early age, with the Colorado Philharmonic premiering his First Symphony when he was 17. His 33 published works for wind band have received widespread critical acclaim and are performed frequently in the U.S. and abroad, including in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Symphony Center in Chicago, and Royal Albert Hall, and in conferences of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, American Bandmasters Association, and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. Principal commissions include those by the William D. Revelli Foundation, The U.S. Air Force Band, The U.S. Army Band, The U.S. Marine Band, Northshore Concert Band, Tara Winds, and Fairfax Symphony Orchestra. He was elected to membership in the American Bandmasters Association in 1999 and has served as founding coordinator of the National Band Association Young Composer Mentor Project since 2000. He conceived of and edited the unique 4-volume book series for GIA Publications, Composers on Composing for Band. His fifth book with GIA Publications (Whatsoever Things…The Life and Teachings of John P. Paynter) was published in 2014. The 2021-2022 academic year marks his 44th year of full-time teaching in higher education. In 2006, Camphouse joined the faculty of George Mason University, where he serves as Director of Concert Bands and Conductor of the Wind Symphony and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in composition, conducting, and orchestration. Other principal artistic, teaching, and administrative positions have included serving as Music Director and Conductor of the New Mexico Music Festival at Taos Symphony Orchestra, Associate Director and Music Division Head of the Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts, Acting Dean of Music at the New World School for the Arts in Miami, and Interim Director of the George Mason University School of Music. Camphouse attained regional finalist status in the prestigious White House Fellowship Competition in 1993. In 2002, he received an Outstanding Faculty Award sponsored by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, the Commonwealth’s highest honor for faculty at Virginia’s colleges and universities for demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and public service. In 2011, Camphouse received the Kappa Kappa Psi Distinguished Service to Music Award in recognition of and appreciation for valuable

contributions to the growth and development of the modern college/university band in the field of composition. In 2015, Camphouse received the Outstanding Contributor to Music Award from Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity. Mark Camphouse has been married to Elizabeth Ann Curtis (Executive Director of the Mason Community Arts Academy) since 1982. They have twin daughters, Beth and Briton. MS. SAMANTHA CLARKE, conductor and flutist, is a Long Island native of East Rockaway, New York.
