DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Focus on the process not the product is my approach to creating a design solution. A pure, pragmatic and precise process is followed every time a new concept is to be developed. An advanced organization system moves a concept in a linear path from simplicity to sophistication which is rooted in the frame work of four design philosophy houses:

1. FOUNDATION: Historical Inspiration, Form Study, Ethics and Morals: The foundation is rich with historical knowledge of different architectural styles, construction techniques and form study. Celebrating the past in a revitalized construction techniques , layers are added to work by re-iterating forms. The juxtaposition of different styles and schools of design enrich a space time constellation with meaning. Ethics and morals are constantly consulted with relevance to the environment and fellow human beings.

2. SUBSTRUCTURE: Environmental Impact: Recycling and Repurposing: Emphasis on sustainable design, using products and materials that have a low impact on the environment, using energy saving appliances and recycling and repurposing as much as possible.

3. SUPERSTRUCTURE: Architecture Minor: Using architecture in a minor sense. Applying the knowledge and solution techniques to any environmental, social and community issue. Architecture minor is amending the space between existing structures and finding creative solutions to weave a tighter fabric in our cities and suburbs. Architecture minor is conceptual, theoretical as well as literal.

4. EXTERIOR CURTAIN WALL: Community Driven: Community is the skin of architecture. Without it, architecture would have no purpose. Community holds all of our values, aspirations and goals as a society together. Each concept and architectural solution takes into account every member of the community and how it would effect the community in a positive or negative way.

DESIGN TEMPLATE The following projects are examples of solution techniques. They are the guide lines of how to start and complete a project while recording and presenting information. Having completed the following exercises in design, I am able to reflect and amend the projects for future use. IE: Analyze the data to see what works, and what did not, add more relevant data, approach a case study in a different direction, and display information in a more coherent way. How can it be better? In addition to these projects, I have developed a simple approach to cataloging a design idea. What are the observations? What are the visions and proposed solutions of any given idea? I record the information, enlightenment or discovery to expand upon it at a later time and categorize it according to priority in a field sketch book or a mental compartmentalization technique I have been cultivating. This simple approach to recording a concept allows the template to be a universal approach to any idea. No matter how complex or simplified.

GESTURE MODEL

MEDIUM: White museum grade mat board, balsa wood, 1/8 wood dowels

GESTURE MODEL

F 000 INSPIRATION: I discovered this rock formation at a junk shop in San Francisco and was fascinated by the layering of elements, color and shape of the sediment. The hierarchal layering is a time stamp of different situations the rock has experienced. Heat formed the iron ore base, salt creating the crystalline shards in the crevasses of the ore and water forming an orange rust deposit on the surface. I choose this object as an inspiration because of the organic changes it has taken.

MEDIUM: White mat board, balsa wood, 1/8 wood dowels

F 001 REFLECTION Inspired by the rock formation , an iteration is created. The mimicry crystal form is a natural abstraction. It is how nature would naturally form dried saline over time in between spaces. Small shards of matter massing together create a differentiation in the formation . This is reflected in the iteration by the triangular shapes created.

F 002 RELECTION: A triangular formation embodying an open and closed area. Opaque triangle abstractions juxtaposed with transparent frames are formed organically giving the structure its dual attributes. A metamorphism of change takes place similar to the beginning of a mind illuminating. The structure is in a state of growth . Edges are formed creating definable boundaries between open and closed spaces.

F 003 REFLECTION: A geometrical drawing cut and spliced to together to form a complex algorithmic 3d form. The triangular forms are an abstraction of a harmonic frequency sending a message into ether space and ultimately the universe. The space is a conceptual model for spiritual illumination and growth of all levels of hominoids. Low level chanting can be heard from miles away and a strong feeling of peace and collective consciousness is experienced the closer a person is to the structure.

F 004 REFLECTION: The final iteration begins to take shape as an inhabitable space for human beings to dwell. The primary element are the white triangular shapes connected by the differentiated beige toned triangles. The interior of the gesture model is framed with transparent shard like shapes similar to the inspiration object. A form is developed where a divine deity can be experienced. A sacred dwelling place that is inspired by organic growth has been created through an iterative process.

GESTURE MODEL

F 005 REFLECTION: Objective: Integration of 4 elements. The gesture model is a hierarchal layering of elements in which a non-physical space time constellation occurs. Inspired by korombi: The Japanese explanation for the interplay of sun light filtering through the leaves of trees and the shadows created. The branch like structures are massed together in an organic pattern projecting shadows on the anamorphic canvass discs. A dimensional metamorphosis occurs as the cellular structures transform in the figure ground relationship. The gesture model emits soft crepuscular light that is juxtaposed with silver highlights producing a calm, meditative and peaceful psychological effect . MEDIUM: 1’16” wire, silver solder, white canvass, 3”x2” rosewood block, light fixture

GESTURE MODEL

F 006 REFLECTION: A continuation of the exploration of anamorphic shapes. Different varieties of wood veneers are used. The iteration becomes more three dimensional encapsulating a concept. The surfaces under go mitosis gradually creating a biomorphic structure. A moment in the iterations evolution. MEDIUM: 1/16 wire, silver solder, walnut wood veneer.

F 007 REFLECTION: Translucent, transparent, opaque, metallic and natural surfaces are explored and composed in a series of iterations. The use of soft pastel translucent colored vellum is used to promote a uplifting spiritual quality. F 008 REFLECTION: An individual cellular case study of the colored vellum with a structure projected on the surface. MEDIUM; 1/16 wire, silver solder, colored vellum, teak veneer, metallic mat board, micron pen.

GESTURE MODEL

F 009 REFLECTION: The hierarchal layering of the elements move from a figure ground relationship to stratified composition: the light core, the organic branch like middle structures and the outer shell of translucent and opaque leaf like anamorphic shapes. The symbiosis of the gesture model celebrates the spirit of the korombi from a 360 degree view point. The iteration continues the intended psychological calming, meditative and peaceful effect. The jovial visual effect comes from within the biomimicry structure, illuminating the inner details in a conversation of color, form and non-physical space time constellation. MEDIUM: 1/16” wire, silver solder, colored vellum, teak veneer, light fixture, 4”x3” Lucite block

GESTURE MODEL

F 010 REFLECTION: Repetition, rhythm, tectonics. Three different octaves and wave lengths are correlated in a algorithmic layering of brise soleil. Negative and positive space interplay and compositions are experienced according to perspective. The various widths and lengths of primary, secondary and tertiary components establish a well defined hierarchal language. The structures seem to be suspended in space, floating in a magnetic connection that is dependent upon one another. MATERIALS: Various lengths of styrene, ¼” wood dowel, ½”wood beam, 1/8” wood beam

EXPLORATIONS IN PROGRAM AND SITE

F 011

F 012 F 012 F 011 REFLECTION: Site and program are introduced into the gesture. The figure is a triangular wedge. The beginnings of a domicile are created. A covered dwelling space known to human vocabulary. The triangular tectonics are radiated above the structure. MEDIUM: Museum grade mat board, wood veneer, 1/8 wood beams F 012 REFLECTION: A triangle is repeated and is composed with an orthogonal shape to maximize program space. The primary shape is divided by three creating the secondary and tertiary levels. Compartments are created, a gesture of a multistory building. MEDUIM: Museum grade mat board.

F 013

F 013 REFLECTION: The triangle becomes a frame. A secondary component of the iteration. It begins to be the frame work for rib like strips to connect to. It resembles a platform. Orthogonal repetitions mimic a stair way. MEDIUM: Teak veneer, 1/8 wood beam, museum grade mat board.

EXPLORATIONS IN PROGRAM AND SITE

F 019

F 019 REFLECTION: A physical location is introduced into the design process and a set of programmatic requirements are assigned. The site is critically analyzed in every possible way: i.e. sun path, climate, circulation, slope, vegetation, acoustical qualities. Data is collected and questions are developed about how to create solutions to the programmatic requirements. Gesture models begin a linear journey. F 017 REFLECTION: Solar and wind inspired energy module. F 018 REFLECTION: A topographical model of the site helps to analyze every facet of the area; complete familiarity is achieved. F 020 REFLECTION: Charcoal medium is used to quickly develop, express and explore the integration of inspirational concepts and program. F 021 REFLECTION: A series of gesture models developing site, program and inspirational concepts continue to explore and integrate meaning into the design.

EXPLORATIONS IN PROGRAM AND SITE

F 022 REFLECTION: A vignette of open space for gathering, restrooms and maintenance area. Differentiated graded landscape promotes lush grassy areas for students to stretch out and sun bath as well as sit and study.

F 024 REFLECTION: The open area for gathering, public speaking and live performances are centrally located in the middle of the pathways. Multiple circulation routes allow pedestrians to move freely throughout the site: free flowing energy.

F 023 REFLECTION: The main structure remains a conceptual abstraction. The cafÊ is nested inside a brise soliel inspired frame system taking full advantage of the sun’s career in each season. An interesting moment takes place when the switch back pathway moves through the structure.

F 025 REFLECTION: The structure is an abstraction in deconstructivism. An axial pivot point creates a break in the brise soleil construction system.

CITY PLANNING

F 026 REFLECTION: A proposal for vitality. Live, work, sustain, thrive, learn, discover and create are the concepts implemented into the utopian city. Edge conditions, landmarks, nodes, districts and pathways integrate a complexity and liveliness into the environment. The city offers both a skyscraping downtown and also a university district. There are multiple accommodations for housing: walk-ups, apartments, town houses as well as luxury beach front property. The city encourages innovation with different office and live/work property as well as environmental conscientious living with bicycle friendly path ways, parks, ocean tide pools and beach access. Retail, theatre, a philharmonic and a downtown offer the citizens many different ways to relax and enjoy life. The utopian city promotes healthy living and thrives in community as well as a global philosophy: Think globally act locally.

PROPOSALS

F 029 F 027 F 028 F 029 F 030 REFLECTIONS: Case studies and proposals are created presenting information in an efficient and readable manner. Diagrams, pictures graphs and charts analyze information about an area or explain concepts and solutions. The proposals and case studies are amendable, constantly changing and re-iterating as new information is discovered and new concepts integrated. Category, time, location, alphabet and continuum are compartments in the advanced organization system.

List of Objects to Incorporate into Uchronian Gardens Concept Related During the day, this landform building project is an architectural landmark; and at night, a visible beacon that draws attention to Mission Bay South. Jutting out into the Bay are the existing piers rich with the maritime history of this place; and resonating with this are new “land piers” that jut into the land to provide a harbor or distribution point where science + design can be delivered to everyone’s front door, an homage to the rich prehistory of the near future.

Whenever activity areas can be enhance by the presence of natural light, give these areas a southern exposure. Note: glazed surfaces receiving direct sunlight will transfer heat to the interiors and place higher demands on building cooling capacities. Horizontal exterior sunshades that effectively shade glazed surfaces during summer months, but allow sun on to these surfaces during winter months can serve as an effective passive energy efficient strategy. The northwest corner of the Site at the intersection of Gene Friend Way (a major path feeding UCSF Mission Bay Campus) & 3 rd Street (with its Muni light rail stations and vehicular traffic volume) can be a pedestrian active node. Activity areas activated by higher levels of pedestrian activity and public exposure can be located here. The southwest corner of the Site is a quieter area, relatively removed from any major intersections and circulation flows. For this reason, activity areas enhanced by these qualities of quiet and tranquility can be located here. The northeast corner of the Site at the intersection of South Street and Terry A. François Blvd (with its visible proximity to AT&T Park and as an armature connecting Mission Bay South with SOMA and the Embarcadero; and its close proximity to Agua Vista Park) can be a viable entry point to the science museum. The San Francisco Bay at Agua Vista Park provides splendid water views with the East Bay Hills in the distance. For this reason, an amphitheater facing this view is desirable. When performances are held, the audience is seeing this bay view as a backdrop to the stage; and when there are no performances, the amphitheater seating serves as a place to comfortably appreciate this marine environment. Promoting paths of diverse experiences to link the west with the east enhances the appeal of this development. Providing a bike path that that takes one through the landforms and its nodes or piazzas is desirable.

ARCHITECTURAL MODEL

The Uchronian Gardens of Mission Bay is designed to be an armature of the Mission Bay bio-technology movement. It is a living, breathing architectural technology that sustains and produces vitality in a number of ways. The building structure itself is a landform design that bridges land and building seamlessly. The structure is inspired by the rich history of Mission Bay and the Pacific Railroad Company. The structure has fluidity reminiscent of a railroad track. The Uchronian Garden offers a plethora of activities for city inhabitants to enjoy. Most notably are the Exploratorium, various markets and interesting gardens and landforms. The Uchronian Garden’s roof contains an unique viewing point in which a visitor can sit and enjoy the San Francisco Bay as well as look west enjoying beautiful landscapes of San Francisco. One can sit and watch the sun rise as well as sunset from this vantage point. Overall, the Uchronian Gardens is a place for exploration, discovery, peace and sustenance. It is a place for all ages to come and enjoy. MEDIUM: white foam board, black and white museum mat board clear acetate, 1/8 wood dowels

F 047

F 048

ARCHITECTURAL MODEL The top portion on the building illuminates at night. A beacon of light and an accent to the water front.

The Uchronian Garden offers plenty of square footage for an outdoor amphitheatre. The space is left open so that modular seating systems can be deployed and out door markets and art walks can happen.

The language of the building and its facades speak Deconstructivism inspired by the decay of the piers in the adjacent bay. The vernacular is broken and completed in different areas. The highly articulated facade resembles the train tracks from the districts past. The differentiated fenestration ranges from opaque, translucent and transparent creating a melody of lighting situations.

F 046

A tri-level shopping mall with a promenade allows pedestrians and shoppers to walk, shops and leisure on multiple levels. Each level with a unique view Architectural history is celebrated with element composition and construction techniques similar to that of the Bauhaus school of design.

The landform surrounds the building structure and is reminiscent of the curvilinear lines that Mission Creek would have had in the past. Just like a dried up creek bed, the landform contains layers of buildings and path ways to be explored. Space is dedicated for a variety of ornamental trees and drought tolerant shrubbery.

F 049

The shopping mall and walk way of the Uchronian Garden continues. Space for seating, landscaping and public gathering are plentiful.

COLLAGE STUDY

F 050 Jazz beats, a blaring horn. The blue notes fading in the distance, the melody working together. How many instruments are there? I hear a voice singing. It is in the background. Soft. Semi circular. Oval. Warm. The vocals become larger, louder. Then cut out. Drift off into the blue note repetitive beat.

F 051 The static of a transmission. Frequencies and wavelengths in the air buzzing downtown on a warm night. They are bouncing off the high rises.

F 052 I am dreaming. The aquatic ambient trickle can be heard through a foggy haze. I see something in the water, a reflection? I stick my hand in the cool water. I hear the clouds pass around me.
