DELIVERING TRAINING TO MEET WORKFORCE DEMAND

Vantage Point Welcome to exciting times here at College of Western Idaho (CWI)! We just kicked off our tenth year FALL 2018 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1

of offering academic and career-technical programs, short-term training, basic skills education, and English as a Second Language classes. It’s challenging to encapsulate in one sentence all the services and opportunities CWI offers.

ELEVATION is published by the College of Western Idaho Foundation and Communications and Marketing Department to share recent highlights and student accomplishments with donors, alumni, and the college community. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CWI FOUNDATION Laura Mulkey | 208.562.3159 lauramulkey@cwidaho.cc COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING 208.562.2222 communications@cwidaho.cc

My favorite phrase to describe what is truly happening here at CWI is to say, “We are changing lives for dynamic purposes.” CWI is changing not only our students’ lives, but entire families and communities. The impact of an educated community goes well beyond our classrooms, and it all begins with one student deciding to purse a degree, a certificate, and a dream. The effect is felt by so many. To continue to support the positive impact CWI is having here in the Treasure Valley, CWI’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to place a $39 million plant facility levy on the ballot this November. The funds would be combined with a $10 million appropriation—recommended by Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter, approved by the Idaho State Legislature, and funded through the Permanent Building Fund—to build a state-of-the-art Health Science Building on CWI’s Nampa Campus. This building will provide a critical increase in capacity to address the skills gap we are experiencing within the healthcare workforce. Additionally, it will allow an additional 2,500 students, annually, access to credit and short-term training

Nichelle Boyce 2018–19 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

JESSICA ARGYLE

BY JESSICA ARGYLE

Not going to college has never been an option for College of Western Idaho (CWI) student, Nichelle Boyce. She shares, “I have always known I wanted to go into the medical field. CWI has made this path so clear and obtainable due to the staff, affordable tuition, available scholarships, and online classes. I couldn’t be any happier with my choice of a college.” At 15, Nichelle found out she was expecting a baby. This news influenced her desire to graduate from high school early and go to college. During finals week in her first year, two trips to the hospital left Nichelle with an unfinished semester and student loans.

“In addition to that, the relationship I was in had become very unhealthy,” she said. “By the time I decided I needed to leave, I had two children.”

As a single mother, Nichelle worked multiple jobs in order to make her dream of an education possible, eventually choosing to attend CWI. As the recipient of the LTH Don’t

Give Up Scholarship, Nichelle says because of scholarships like this she will be able to graduate debt free even as a single mom. Planning to continue her education after CWI, Nichelle would ultimately like to work as a surgical or trauma nurse. “I have been able to become a positive example to my children. Even at such a young age they understand to obtain your dreams, you have to challenge yourself—sometimes that means you have to be temporarily inconvenienced,” she said. “Because of CWI, our lives are changing.”

"AS A SINGLE MOTHER, THIS SCHOLARSHIP WILL COME AS IMMENSE HELP. THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME ACHIEVE MY DREAMS.” 2018–19 SCHOLARSHIP THANK YOU LETTER

CWI Partners with Saint Alphonsus to Offer Training Local partnerships are bringing resources together and positively impacting the workforce, offering an integrated education and training opportunity to CWI’s English as a Second Language (ESL) students. The Environmental Services Pre-apprenticeship class, held twice a week at Saint Alphonsus in Boise, focuses on language and career development, preparing students to work in the healthcare industry as Environmental Services Technicians (EVS). “The supportive services provided to our students by Saint Alphonsus, the International Rescue Committee, and other project partners are an example to me of what ‘community’ really means,” said Trevi Hardy, ESL and Pathways Supervisor in CWI’s Basic Skills Education department. “This partnership is providing our students with real-life career and English language skills that will lead to full-time employment with a living wage, health care benefits, and opportunities for additional education and training.” TREASURE VALLEY HEALTH CAREERS COUNCIL EVS PROJECT PARTNERS: Saint Alphonsus

CWI’s Nursing program received reaccreditation in August through the Accreditation Commission of Education in Nursing. Accreditation is crucial to continuing this incredibly successful program at the College. Ninety-five percent of CWI’s Nursing students pass the state board exam and are qualified to work as a registered nurse or transfer to a four-year institution upon graduation.

FEATURE

CWI’s primary goal is to ensure students receive the skills and career training they need to be workforce ready. As the Treasure Valley experiences significant population growth and an aging demographic, we face a growing gap between the staffing needs of health- and science-related fields and

ASHLEY SMITH

the skilled workforce available to fill those jobs. The latest Hot Jobs Projections Report from Idaho Department of Labor lists nursing as the #1 hot job in the state, with total anticipated annual openings just over 1,100.

A new Health Science Building is crucial to fulfilling this need.

CWI is the connection between skilled workers and industry shortages. Delivering training to meet workforce demand continues to drive CWI’s community focus; however, current program capacity is limited. With health and science professions in high demand, this state-of-the-art facility will provide student-centric training for nursing, natural and life sciences, medical and emergency responder professions, and additional healthcare careers.

CWI'S PROPOSED HEALTH SCIENCE BUILDING SIZE: 105,000 square feet (4 stories) CAPACITY: 2,500 additional students annually COST: $49 million • State Support: $10 million – Permanent Building Fund • Community Support: $39 million – plant facilities levy TARGETED COMPLETION: Fall 2022 LOCATION: Centrally located at CWI's Nampa Campus

BY JESSICA ARGYLE

Ricardo, currently majoring in Human Biology at College of Western Idaho (CWI), would ultimately like to become a forensic scientist. Ricardo came to the United States from Jamaica with his mother in 2016. Despite being the first in his family to attend college, he said he was taught from a young age education is the key to success.

“I want to make a difference, and the very thought of knowing I can make a difference while solving crimes and other situations is a blessing to me.”

“Because of CWI, things seem possible. I am thankful to CWI for the opportunity I have been given.”

Planning to continue his education at a fouryear university, Ricardo says he has overcome many challenges during his academic journey and credits his success at CWI to the people he has met and his amazing instructors.

As the recipient of various scholarships during his time at CWI, Ricardo says not only have the scholarships relieved the burden of paying for college expenses, but they have also increased his confidence and pushed him to work harder.

ASHLEY SMITH

Lifelong Dream Achieved BY ASHLEY SMITH

Kellie Barnes greets visitors and patients with a warm smile as she walks through the hospital hallways in her red, Saint Alphonsus scrubs. Her passion for healthcare shines through – she even sports EKG heartbeat earrings! Barnes graduated from College of Western Idaho’s (CWI) Nursing program in May and has been working at Saint Alphonsus Health System in Boise for the past three months. She works on the eighth floor, in the Central Tower, which handles a variety of trauma cases including gunshot wounds, motorcycle crashes, and other patients. “It’s such a diverse floor, it’s just perfect for the first year,” Barnes said. She liked CWI’s program because of the quality of instruction she received and how she was still able to work and take care of her family while finishing school. The Nursing program at CWI builds on the scientific foundations of nursing knowledge, while incorporating

1 6

knowledge of biological and social sciences, and the humanities through classes and hands-on training during labs. “The simulation labs were amazing — we had a six-week lab with Instructor Jen Navarro, I was so nervous, but the learning environment was great!” According to Idaho Department of Labor, from 2016 to 2026, the demand for registered nurses in the state has a projected growth rate of 29.3 percent which equates to 1,147 annual openings with an average hourly wage of $29.90. Ironically for Barnes, her clinicals in the Nursing program were at the same hospital. “My first clinical day was on this floor, one of my mentors that I thought was amazing is now one of my co-workers. I was so supported and it

2 0 1 8

felt great. All of the mentors were wonderful,” added Barnes. During her classes at CWI, Barnes excelled. “Kellie was a class leader. She was positive and motivated others to step up,” said Allison Baker, Nursing Department Chair. CWI’s two-year Nursing program is approved by the Idaho State Board of Nursing, and is a great way to launch a career in healthcare — with 95 percent of the College’s students passing the national test to become a registered nurse.

"EVERY TIME I LEAVE FOR WORK I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS WHERE I’M GOING, I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO THIS.”
