GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT “Because of College of Western Idaho (CWI), I was able to return to college as a nontraditional student having been out of high school for a decade, find my passion, make wonderful friends, gain influential mentors, and successfully graduate with honors and two science degrees,” said 2021 graduate, Ashton Syed. After dropping out multiple times due to an abusive home life and homeless his entire senior year, Ashton graduated from high school in 2009. Despite excelling in several careers over the years that followed, he lacked fulfillment. This lack of fulfillment brought him to CWI in 2018. “Primarily, my discontent stemmed from a lack of intellectual challenge,” he said. “In the positions I held, I rapidly excelled and exceeded the established expectations by such a degree much of the work became boring, and I was not encouraged to pursue further growth. The environments, in general, were quite negative and destructive which made it even more difficult to be happy and find fulfillment; given my past.” While at CWI, Ashton rediscovered his passion for Computer Science. “My Computer Science instructor, Lawrence Sevigny, was exceptional. The course material came so, surprisingly, natural to me. As he and I reminisced about an old computer game I played as a child, a real connection was occurring, not only with my instructor but also with my long-deceased father who was a computer systems analyst and passed away in 1997. My father gave me a foundation in computer networking and a strong interest in computers which I kept through much of my childhood.”

Seeking to influence change and enhance learning for students and the success of CWI, Ashton kept himself engaged and involved which included serving as leadership of ASCWI. Despite a number of challenges in his personal life, he was able to keep his grades up and was recognized for several awards and achievements. Among the most memorable was being nominated as an Emerging Scholar. “This nomination was particularly memorable for me because when Karl Von Der Ehe, my Technical Writing instructor, nominated me I was sleeping at St. Luke’s with my then twoyear-old daughter during her battle against cancer. Even though I was going through a tough time personally, I was producing exceptional results in class which later earned me two, first-place Presidential Writing Awards.” As a husband and father, Ashton valued the opportunity to take classes online. “My wife and kids have been a huge part of my journey and are my number one priority. For them, I needed flexibility in my education. Without the flexibility CWI provided through online classes, it would have been much more difficult to push through and succeed – especially during that trying time with my daughter. I am happy to report she is now in full remission and a happy, energetic four-year old.” Ashton has already embarked on classes at Boise State University where he continues his studies in Computer Science. “My ultimate goal? To change the world!”

Math 095 a Winning Pathway to College Through a collaborative effort between CWI’s Office of Dual Credit and Math Solutions Center, thousands of high school students across the state gained a head start on college math requirements. MATH 095 is designed to allow students to complete college-prep mathematics in an instructionally-supported, individualized, learning-lab structure to help them meet prerequisites to enroll in transfer-level mathematics courses more quickly. “Math is a subject that causes anxiety for many students,” said Randi Smith, Senior Coordinator in Dual Credit. “It can be the reason students choose not to continue their education. By taking MATH 095 in high school, students are gaining confidence in their math skills and the courage to face their fears, pursue their education, and be successful at it.”

Idaho Job Corps Partnership Helps Students Thrive 1 0

College of Western Idaho (CWI) began an exciting partnership with the Idaho Department of Labor in November 2019 to deliver educational services to Idaho Job Corps students, 16-24 years old, by connecting them to skills training and employment. Students can earn a high school diploma or GED while training in CWI classes that prepare students to work in various industries including welding, construction, and healthcare.

Ben Still is one of the students who has discovered success with Idaho Job Corps and recently earned his welding certificate.

"Idaho's Job Corps program was built to be responsive to the needs of the community, employers, and the students we serve. CWI is uniquely equipped with the expertise and resources for this kind of work," said Tina Polishchuk, Program Operations Manager for Idaho Job Corps.

CWI case managers, like Jennifer Wind, help guide students like Still as they navigate and explore different career options available to them through Idaho Job Corps and CWI. Students can enroll in Idaho Job Corps for up to 24 months to explore career pathways and complete work-based learning.

On March 18, 2021, CWI and Idaho Job Corps staff presented a certificate of completion to the first group of students finishing their welding training.

"Ben’s confidence level has skyrocketed after getting his GED through Idaho Job Corps, and it's really fun to watch him smile and look confident after the success he has found with welding," said Wind. "We have many students who never imagined college could be an option for them. We've genuinely appreciated our partnership with CWI and look forward to the growth we will see as we move beyond the pandemic."

"I'm very pleased and happy about the accomplishments of these students," said John Russ, Assistant Director of Idaho Job Corps. "It was a joy to be in attendance and see the smiles on each of the students' faces. Many of them face hardships or difficulties navigating adult life. With the help of their case managers, these students took the first of many steps toward a successful future." “The program mission is to ‘inspire and empower students toward a purposeful life,’” continued Russ. “This is done through activities like education training, life skills, service learning, fitness, nutrition, health and safety, and much more. The students are supported through their journey by a case manager and many other staff to ensure they are on track to a successful career.”

"I've really enjoyed the program, and I feel like it has helped to further my life," Still commented. "I've always been a mechanical person who likes to take things apart and rebuild them, so welding is perfect for me."

Over the past year and a half, 57 students have entered post-secondary educational opportunities, 29 students have received their GEDs, and 25 students are currently seeking a GED. Students have also earned 65 certificates in courses such as Introduction to Networking, Phlebotomy, and Food and Nutrition. CWI's partnerships throughout the community are part of the College's mission. Idaho Job Corps is a shining example of student empowerment as they develop skills to help them thrive in the workplace and in life.

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT "College of Western Idaho (CWI) empowered me to become a more confident version of myself,” said 2021 graduate, Justina Sexton. Justina, a first-generation college student, originally from Oklahoma, came to Idaho in 2017 looking for a change. “After completing an associate degree in English Education in 2016 at a small community college in Oklahoma, I moved to Idaho with some friends. Moving here has been one of the best opportunities of my life because it has given me the direction I was searching for along with an amazing support system.” Drawn to CWI for its smaller class settings, Justina chose to continue her education – this time in Media Arts. “I have always had a knack for media production. Before CWI, I had seven years of freelance video editing experience. I knew Media Arts was where I belonged.” From running through the halls of the Canyon County Center shooting video to taking the lead on class projects, Justina valued encouragement from her instructors to always be her best. “Through happy and sad tears, Dan Garrity helped me find my voice and become the storyteller I am today. Anna Gamboa helped me define my path and be confident in the skills I have. I loved being in their classes!” In her last semester at CWI,

Justina was able to use her talents to directly impact the community, a cause she invests her heart in. “Justina was selected by her classmates to be the Executive Producer of a class project in my Multimedia Storytelling class [see Documenting the Pandemic on page 8]. She made it a goal to make sure her fellow students knew she cared about them as much as she cared about the project’s success,” explained Garrity. “The sky is the limit for her, and I am very proud and grateful to have been along for this part of her ride.” “Justina eats, sleeps, and breathes media,” said classmate, Tehani Schnupp. “Her passion for the media industry is matched only by her determination to find creative ways to utilize that passion to make a positive impact on the world. Working alongside her in class is empowering! She willingly shares her knowledge and locks arms with you to plow through and learn right beside you.” Now a CWI graduate, Justina has already started her journey at Boise State University where she is studying Multidisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Media Content and Communication Management. “In fine-tuning my skills and knowledge, I have achieved personal and professional milestones giving me more than I ever thought possible. Because of CWI, I am ready for the future."

Giving Back MARCOS SERRATOS-GARCIA

“Because of College of Western Idaho (CWI), I am in a position to give back to my community and be a role model to those around me,” said 2018 graduate, Marcos Serratos-Garcia.

“CWI taught me the importance of communication. I had the opportunity to reflect on years of damaging, selffulfilling prophecies in my life giving me the confidence to develop my talents to be the best I can possibly be. Many of the people I have met at CWI continue to be mentors, motivators, and friends.”

Through the immigration policy DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), Marcos has been able to realize his dream of a college education beginning his pursuit in the College’s Heavy-Duty Truck Technician program. “Both my dad and uncle have been driving big rigs all their life. They use to take me on road trips as a kid. I have never had the desire to drive them but always wanted to know how they work. CWI’s diesel program was the best I found in Idaho and California.” As a student, Marcos was mentored by his instructors in life-changing ways. 1 6

the program’s overall success. I am excited for the work he will do at CWI and confident in his ability to connect with students and help them grow and reach their goals.” “During my first year at CWI, I was hired as a Diesel Technician at Freightliner in Nampa,” said Marcos. “This is just one example of how CWI empowered me with the necessary tools I needed to be successful. Today, as an instructor myself, I have the opportunity to empower and serve others by educating individuals in the community so future generations can thrive.”
