“God lassoed my heart and dragged me to the front of the church. I don’t know what prayer I said that day, but that moment changed my life forever. After that, I told everyone, everywhere I went, about Jesus. I didn’t know what evangelism was, but I just wanted to tell the world.” Daz Chettle page 16

05. Orphans Aid reports on growing need 06. A Hope Revolution

Well, it’s the end of an amazing era. As I type this we are just about to bring you news that this edition of Christian Life is the final one in print. Firstly, I hope this news is met with a bit of disappointment, as I personally feel like each and every issue has carried the sort of content that when read, would either bring people closer in their walk with God, or would be the sort of content they would want to share with unsaved family and friends. The reality is that this is in fact not a sad day by any means. Media is moving online, which means not only are peoples’ reading habits following suit, but so are advertising dollars. We have always known that there will be an end in sight to keeping Christian Life in print, and so we have decided to go out on a high. The publication is powering, advertising is strong, but we know the end is coming, so let’s leave on a positive note. And not only that but our company that produces CL, Initiate Media, is so well versed in digital media that we can transition our readers with ease. No, we cannot give readers that completely local Kiwi feel, but in this new global world, we can keep you abreast daily of all that is happening. Simply visit www.mychristiandaily.co.nz and not only can you keep up to date on the world around you, but you can also subscribe to our daily email newsletter. It has been such an incredible honour and privilege to publish this amazing publication, but of course it cannot be done without a team. I’d especially like to thank Ray and Janet Curle, Marie Anticich, Elizabeth Yeo, Nicole Danswan and our amazing team of contributors. So thank you again and let’s catch up each day at mychristiandaily.co.nz.

Orphans Aid reports on growing need F

ounders of Orphans Aid International Sue and Carl van Schreven have recently returned from a visit to their project areas in Eastern Europe where they first started the organization thirteen years ago. Sue shares in her own words here, “I have not long returned from a trip to Romania and Russia. Connecting with our co-workers and seeing the stability in the teams caring for the children is very encouraging. On our arrival in Romania it felt like coming home, a second home, where the children and staff feel like family to us. On our first day there we were thanking two of the “Mums” who were celebrating ten years of caregiving. For the children who call Casa Kiwi home this is such a gift, because the home experiences regular changes with children being adopted to permanent families or being placed with our foster care parents. To have this stability with the team has been crucial. On this trip the older children were all speaking and understanding more English, so this was also a first for us being able to communicate more fully with them.

We spent some time looking around a number of Hungarian villages not far from Casa Kiwi, as we hold on to our dream of purchasing land and a home in the countryside for the children. This has not yet been realized, but as we’ve learnt in the past some of these projects take a few years to come to fruition. Romania has made some huge leaps forward in recent years. On our early trips there the issue of child abandonment was largely denied by the authorities and it seemed little attempt was being made to address the real problems. Now our partners have opportunity to discuss policy with the government and statistics are even released through the local media. A recent Romanian media release reported statistics from the National Authority for the Protection of Children’s rights and Adoption (ANPDCA), which gave information on the 245 children who had been abandoned at maternity hospitals or other health care providers in the first three months of 2017. Dialogue around these difficulties is certainly a step in the right direction

towards bringing real answers. Not only has there been change in acknowledging these social issues, but the infrastructure we use as visitors to the Transylvanian region, services, roads, shopping and even taxis, has hugely improved. Casa kiwi Romania turns 13. MISSIONS SPECIAL

A Hope Revolution by John Watson

Above left: Sayra Sheik; Above right: The water pipeline running to Mumbai and Thane passes through Bhiwandi.

T

hrough the hills of Bhiwandi, a municipality just inland of Mumbai, runs a pipeline delivering water to Mumbai’s taps, showers, and swimming pools. It seems almost alien in the poor community; as alien as running taps with clean water. They get their water from a tanker that arrives every two weeks. People have lost their lives fighting over the precious liquid; so precious, a water mafia exists. Amidst the poverty of Bhiwandi, corruption and exploitation thrive, and it’s not only the water and drug mafias taking advantage. In the municipality of around 700,000, the owners of the power loom factories pay meagre wages, to men who stand for 12 hours a day. The fine dust created by the fabrics, causes respiratory problems which drastically shortens their lives. There is also a common belief in and around Bhiwandi that the politicians keep the people poor intentionally, in order to create problems they can solve, especially around election time. At home, sit the women disempowered and oppressed, not only by poverty, but by a culture which treats them as second-class citizens.

But there is hope. Through the un-driveable, litter-laden roads, echoing with the deafening noise of the power loom factories, strolls Poonam Nair and her team. They walk with an air of confidence and freedom not common to most of the women in Bhiwandi. It is not the water or loom factories they are interested in, but the transformation of women and their families. They are staff members of Tearfund’s Christian partner, ‘Saahasee’ meaning ‘courageous’ in Hindi and they’re the only NGO allowed in the closed-community long term. For the past fourteen years, they’ve been creating self-help groups, in which around 20 women (they found women’s groups worked better than men’s) come together, to pool their savings and take peer-to-peer loans. At first, loans are taken to provide for immediate and emergency needs, but as time goes on, more and more loans are taken, to start small businesses or to help their husbands’ earning potential. They also address issues affecting the community, such as; health, sanitation and women’s rights. “When women are educated, an entire nation can change,” Poonam

says. Visiting women involved in selfhelp groups, it’s clearly not the financial change in families that is most striking, but the transformation of the women themselves, as a result of the empowerment and social support. Sayra Sheik is a case in point. “I didn’t know what it was to leave the house, and was scared to go to Saahasee’s office just around the corner,” she says. “I don’t know what it was in the office, but I felt very good. They taught me how to talk. Now my husband is always trying to quiet me,” she beams. As she speaks of Saahasee and the changes in her life, her face is alive. Her husband, sitting beside her, can’t help but smile too, as she recounts her experience with joy. If it weren’t for the loan she took out to start his taxi business, he would be dead from working in the loom factory. They agree their marriage has deepened as a result of the self-help group. Tearfund’s Christmas appeal this year, is named ‘Renew Hope’ and seeks to fund our partners, creating self-help groups and agricultural cooperatives. This Christmas, we’re ask-

ing people to reflect on who they see in the mirror, then think about how God sees them – loved, valued, and made in His image. We’re then, asking people to renew hope in others. In houses across Bhiwandi, a revolution of hope is spreading. In one of the narrow alleys, lives Vandana Mestry. Now a strong and confident woman, she has her mind set on solving a key issue in her community. “Every day, I go to the local politician’s house and take 20 to 25 women with me, to demand clean water. The unity in my self-help group gives me strength. I have hope we will have water. One day, we will have water.” Will you be a part of this story, by taking a collection at your church? MISSIONS SPECIAL

Mission Without Borders Reaching into Eastern Europe

Homes of Hope

We believe God wants us to do everything we can to ensure people, from six nations in Eastern Europe, and more than 20 different people groups, hear the Good News that Jesus died for their sins and rose from the dead, so that they can have forgiveness and enjoy God. During 70 plus years of repressive government, parts of the Christian Church were nearly persecuted into oblivion. But God had other plans. Since the fall of Communism, we have partnered with traditional evangelical churches and newer churches to help them reach their nations with the Good News. Poor families, orphaned children, the abandoned elderly, prisoners, the homeless – we preach God’s love with Christian witness and with food, clothing, and ongoing help. And they are coming to Christ. We don’t just give hand-outs. We help families regain dignity, by becoming self-supporting and young people to further their education and training, to get good jobs and become a positive influence. Churches and individuals in NZ support our work, along with folk from 10 other nations – financial gifts; monthly sponsorship of a family or child; prayer; volunteering time in New Zealand; or helping overseas at MWB summer camps for 3-4,000 children in our programmes. To get involved, visit www.mwb.org.nz or our Facebook page or call 0800 469 269

Every month, a precious kiwi child is murdered, by someone who is meant to take care of them. Dozens more, suffer on-going abuse. Yet, every child is worth fighting for and our mission is to provide safe, loving homes and the therapeutic support these children need; to recover from the terrible trauma of abuse and neglect and to begin to re-build their lives. The level of trauma, experienced by these children, means timely, early intervention is critical to ensuring their journey of healing and restoration. Our vision is to see each child, living out their goals and dreams that have been nurtured and encouraged during their time with us. Brothers and sisters get to stay together; we provide a unique wrap-around, therapeutic service which is consistent and stable. We must reach more of these precious, vulnerable children. Will you join us; to see more children whole and healed, preventing further cycles of abuse? Together, we can make a lasting difference for these children, proudly standing and advocating for them. It is more viable, economically and socially, to restore a child, than it is to repair an adult. We hope that as more and more people know about our work, we will receive your support, so that we can do just that. Your regular donation of just $2 a week, can help to rescue & care for a Kiwi child, before it’s too late. Contact info: www.homesofhope.org.nz www.facebook/homesofhopenz / call 0800 11 21 20

Aglow New Zealand Invites Exciting Speakers

Marine Reach – Right place, right time!

Liberty Down Under Summer Schools

Aglow is committed to building on the word God has been speaking to New Zealand, through this ministry’s keynote convention speaker, since 2014 and this will be expanded, when Aglow New Zealand hosts its Bi Annual Convention, in March 2018, in Auckland. This is open, not only to Aglow members, but to all churches and anyone interested, because we are thrilled to be bringing Graham Cooke back to NZ, for this exciting event. We are aware of how many people follow Graham and would love the opportunity, to hear his wisdom in person. Here is a quote from Graham, at the 2017 International Conference: “We need to know what God wants to do - there is an urgency in His heart.” We are also very excited, to have Gary Morgan speak into Aglow, in NZ for the first time. Gary and his wife, Sarah are founders and directors of School of Prophets, in Melbourne. Gary speaks strategically and directly, bringing wisdom and confirmation to those who seek God’s counsel. For a convention registration form, please visit www.aglow.org.nz and click on Events or for more information, phone the Aglow National office on 04 568 9653.

We couldn’t see the volcano, from the bridge of the M/V Pacific Hope, only the menacing red glow’s reflection, in the cloud covering it. We were so grateful to be in the right place, at the right time. As we watched the first 70 patients come aboard the vessel, from the island of Ambae, in Vanuatu we knew we had a divine calling to be there. Most were elderly women, some of whom could not walk and several were totally blind. Getting them on the vessel, while swaying at anchor, was a major challenge. They were so grateful for our help. We delivered them to Loganville, on the island of Santo, where they were met by a team of healthcare professionals. We then immediately returned to Ambae, to evacuate the remaining population of the town of Lolowai. The second trip consisted of mostly women and children. These beautiful children were wide eyed and excited about the adventure they were embarking on. Their parents were a little more serious with the situation! Being in the right place, at the right time, is something that only God can orchestrate. When we get it right, the rewards are enormous. For more information: www.marinereach.com Phone: 07 5433787

Every year, Jubilee Resources has hosted various speakers and ministries from around the world. Every year, some of those attending have commented to us that we have an uncanny knack of bringing the right people, to speak into the needs of Kiwi and Aussie Christians, with a “NOW” word for them. As a consequence, many testimonies have been reported of spiritual, emotional, financial and relational healings. On Sid Roth’s TV programme, John Remirez said, “The church is teaching us how to be happy, but they aren’t teaching us how to be free!” The calling from the LORD to Jubilee Resources, is to equip Christians with information and resources that will achieve three main things: First, to enhance our relationships with the Lord Jesus Christ; Second, to provide solid Bible-based teaching, speakers and material to aid point one; and Third, to provide a practical element that can be worked through, as the Lord requires of each of us. Discover how to glorify Jesus Christ, and to be effective and fruitful for His Kingdom! You can also learn how to help others get healed and whole. Let’s not forget the great worship and fellowship times. Many attending, make long- lasting friendships, through meeting folks at these life-changing events. For more info: jubileeresources.org

New Zealand & Beyond conference in April 2018. An invitation to all churches from Tak and Adrienne Bhana We are so encouraged by the number of churches and leadership teams that are connecting with the vision of reaching out beyond the four walls of the church and impacting our communities, nation, and nations, with the gospel. We believe there will be a great increase in the number of people attending churches, and along with this, a rise in the percentage of Christians in New Zealand. We will see the book of Acts revisited, including Acts 2:47, which says, ‘the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved’. We are thrilled to have three outstanding keynote speakers, Alan Scott, Mike Pilavachi and Joel Holm, along with Jodi Tolley and myself. The conference is now held in three locations, soon to become four, Auckland and Christchurch in New Zealand; Karachi in Pakistan; and for the first time, Birmingham in the United Kingdom in 2018. MISSIONS SPECIAL

When God Says Go!

Intrepid Kiwi, Darren G works as an under-cover missionary, among unreached people groups in restricted Third World nations. Marie Anticich interviewed Darren by Skype at an undisclosed location. From top left: Darren at high altitude in base camp; Darren riding his motorbike to an underground meeting; Darren giving out booklets on the streets; Below: Conducting an underground training session in an undisclosed location.

A

dventure is Darren G’s second name. Like a secret agent, the derring-do teacher and evangelist keeps a low profile on social media and uses secure cell phone and internet addresses to avoid government hacking. He leads an Asian-based NGO team which is part of a multi-national ministry network called Kingdom Training International Network. Much of his work is focused on training rural pastors, evangelists, leaders and migrant workers and mobilising them to plant strong reproducing churches in remote areas. Kingdom Transformation aims to: • Impact unreached rural people living in restricted and developing nations • Disciple and raise up new indigenous leaders and networks • Run leadership training seminars • Teach English as a second language • Advise on micro-enterprise business ideas • Set up medical camps • Support orphanages, especially children affected by natural disasters • Provide humanitarian aid in times of crises • Mobilise these networks, to go and reproduce likewise “Rural pastors and Christian leaders are often ill-equipped to evangelise their own people,” says Darren

“and they face great spiritual and physical opposition, loneliness and discouragement. Our strategy is to invite leaders to three-day leadership training seminars and teach them how to reach their own unique ethnic groups.” “Training local Christians is good stewardship,” he adds. “Locals can operate on a lower budget and they can evangelise, preach and travel in restricted rural areas, without the language and cultural barriers confronting western missionaries.” Pastors travel for up to five days to attend training seminars which are held in ‘underground’ locations; in private homes, religious places such as monasteries, convents and mosques or in commercial premises in busy urban settings. To avoid being followed, Darren travels by a different route each day and often rides his motorbike right inside the building. Doors are locked behind him and shutters drawn. “The humidity can be very oppressive in premises with no air-conditioning,” remarks Darren, who is looking forward to returning to New Zealand in December after four years away. The inveterate traveller has visited more than 70 countries ranging from harsh political regimes to remote islands, deserts and jungles, in temperatures ranging from 50 degrees Celsius to minus 30 degrees in snow-covered mountains. He has been in danger in the city and in danger in the country; surviv-

ing bomb scares, machete attacks, red tape bureaucracy, riots and interrogations at passport checkpoints. He has hidden in the back of taxis, dodged government spies and smuggled Bibles and tracts past aggressive customs officers; facing jail terms or worse, if discovered. Thrown out of one nation, he was banned from returning for 12 months and red-flagged for future visits. Travelling by tuk-tuk, camel, rickshaw, motor scooter, boat, train, elephant, truck, ferry and outrigger canoe, he has seen first-hand, the devastating effects of landslides, floods, tsunamis and earthquakes. He has experienced debilitating viruses and spiritual attacks, gone without water and electricity and encountered savage monkeys, malarial mosquitoes, scorpions, bed bugs, biting ants and snakes. Trekking to villages at 5,400 metres in the world’s highest mountains he learned to dodge lightning strikes and large hail-stones, and contracted altitude sickness with nosebleeds, headaches, diarrhoea and vomiting; necessitating the use of an oxygen mask. At night, he prayed he wouldn’t freeze to death in sub-zero conditions. His mission is to train rural church-planters to take the gospel to thousands of isolated villagers who have never heard the name of Jesus. These local Christian workers climb mountains and trek for days through snow to reach remote villages which are accessible only on foot. Darren has taught English, spoken to thousands of school children, performed puppet shows in pre-schools, prayed for the sick and demon-possessed, visited prisoners and helped bring humanitarian aid during natural disasters. He has slept in railway stations, cars, tents, airports, on park benches under the stars, in budget hotels in tourist-friendly centres, in unheated concrete block houses with long drop toilets, and in tiny apartments in hostile cities, with plain-clothes police-

men and surveillance cameras watching his every move. Pulled over by gangsters while driving to a training session, Darren accidently ran his 4WD into a ditch. The gangsters demanded his licence and passport but he managed to stay calm and prayed silently. Suddenly the atmosphere changed and the gangsters helped pull his 4WD out of the ditch. He attributes their change of heart to an angelic presence. Late one night, while returning from another training session, his front right tyre blew and shredded on an isolated and dangerous road. The nuts and bolts seemed welded onto the metal rim and so he prayed ‘Lord help me!’ Suddenly two bright lights appeared and two men climbed out of a pickup van, asked him to stand aside and proceeded to change his tyre. He thanked them and they left, but when he looked in his rear-vision mirror, the lights had disappeared. Angels again. Fortunately Darren is supported by a team of intercessory prayer warriors, one of whom visits heaven each day. “The Lord takes her into a room filled with TV screens with one like a God-cam showing my daily activities. She can tell me where in the world I am and what I am doing!” Once, his passport was stolen inflight and he spent ten hours standing in transit, with grumpy immigration officers threatening to send him home. This would mean re-applying for all the visas he’d obtained, causing delays and loss of momentum for the team. He texted his prayer warriors and, just as he was about to board a plane home, an airline representative handed him his passport saying it had been found in another part of the country! Darren and his team aim to replicate the biblical model adopted by the Apostle Paul who clearly functioned as an itinerant church planter; doing effective short-term mission stints in multiple locations. Like Paul, they use reproducible methods of teaching, preaching, evangelising and lead-

Darren visits new church families, celebrates cultural events, preaches, commissions, conducts weddings and baptisms and helps leaders start micro-enterprise business so they can be self-supporting and also establish orphanages and medical clinics. “Training local workers is good stewardship,” Darren reiterates. “Local Christians can survive on a low budget and they already know the language and culture so they can readily evangelise and plant churches. They can also preach, teach and evangelise in restricted rural areas without the barriers that confront western missionaries.” A Pen Portrait Growing up in Auckland in a Chris-

tian family, Darren attended a Baptist Sunday school, Bible class and youth group. Inspired by slide shows shown by visiting missionaries and missionary articles in Challenge Weekly and the NZ Baptist, which he cut out and pasted in a scrapbook, he felt called to missions even before becoming a Christian. “I knew the basics of Christianity and the Bible but was too stubborn to make a decision to follow Christ,” he admits. “At an evening service on September 19, 1982 when I was sixteen, I saw a bright light shining at the front of the church and felt God say, ‘Stop putting me off. Now is the time to give your life to me.’ So I went forward at the altar call and committed my life to Jesus Christ.” Darren left high school in 1984 and spent the next eleven years working in the insurance industry and has continued to do so over the years in a tent-making role, including doing Christchurch EQ work. His first overseas holiday, in 1989, to a Pacific island was a disaster: “It was hot, humid and undeveloped and the beaches were polluted. My brother and I returned our rental car and waited at the airport for seven hours so we could ‘get outta here.’” Going back with a church team a few years later, he knew this second

trip would make or break him. “It turned out to be the most impacting trip I’ve ever had and confirmed my call to missions,” he recounts. “I said, ‘Okay Lord. Do you want me to go Africa or Asia?’ and He said, ‘Go back to the island nation.’” First, he wanted to gain new experiences and perspectives and spent two years and playing and coaching rugby overseas and backpacking across every continent. Coming home in 1999, he settled down to work and study, graduating with a double degree in theology and missions in 2003. Returning to the Pacific nation he’d once hated, he spent the next seven years mentoring untrained pastors, preaching in scores of small churches, running youth and children’s programmes, coaching a local rugby team and distributing tracts and Bibles: “Some of the pastors were too poor to buy a Bible,” he notes. Suddenly his work ended. His visa application was refused and immigration officials ordered him to leave the country within three days or be forcibly handcuffed and deported. Since then, Darren has worked in numerous restricted countries and seen many churches planted and hundreds of new disciples come into the ‘family.’ Miracles have occurred as he

prayed for the deaf and blind. Metal plates have disappeared. Twisted feet have straightened. In one village a 14-year-old girl planted a church and raised a dead person causing pandemonium. “It’s God’s plan for every ethnic group to have the opportunity of hearing and embracing the Good News of Jesus Christ,” he asserts. “Our team is helping to establish strong and healthy Christian ‘families’ with a heavenly culture that begins to rule the atmosphere and multiply revival into unreached people groups. Matthew 24:14 says, And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. “My greatest joy,” says Darren G, “comes from mentoring and training believers who reproduce what they’ve been taught in other people’s lives resulting in many new believers and church plants. Like secret agents, missionaries should view themselves as temporary workers on an assignment. If we do our work well these ‘family members’ will no longer need us and we will eventually do ourselves out of a job.” darreng@kingdomtransformationintl.net

rock is an unlikely instrument to facilitate a message of hope. A policeman of almost 23 years, a street sergeant in Auckland city, and a detective overseas; in the South Island and the Far North, he has now heard the call, for a deeper walk with his God. “I could not undo the stuff I saw and did, couldn’t stop drinking and raging. I never slept. I barely coped. Not many knew of my real struggles.” After losing his marriage, ruining his reputation and just about everything else, because of his addictions and violence; he felt God encourage him to take a year off in 2015, without pay, to seek His face. Brock was baptised in the Holy Spirit, in Auckland one day, and with his life now exposed, was forced to rethink and choose the Master’s repentance and deliverance. “I did not know Him at all before I met the Holy Spirit. I was religious, mean, bound with many dysfunctions, unfaithful, deceitful, and tried to live a faith beyond what I was capable of living.” Then, he travelled with his son to Hong Kong, China, Ethiopia and Israel. With a vision to share the gospel, he was directed to learn about Moses’ Tabernacle at the Temple Institute in Jerusalem, and spent a week at the life-sized replica of Moses’ Tabernacle in Timna, Eilat, in Israel. Brock returned to New Zealand, built a near life-sized replica of Moses’ Tabernacle and placed it on an eight-metre trailer. “I just travel, park up, and preach the gospel Jesus preached; people are intrigued, and some get saved and healed.” Last month (October), Brock was shouted a return trip to Israel, by some Mongolian evangelists he met in Kerikeri. They persuaded him to pack up the Ark and march it through the streets of Jerusalem, which is exactly what they or he did. He presented the Ark of the Covenant, as a gift to a rabbi at the King of Kings Fellowship in Jerusalem, where it now has it’s home. Brock believes this fulfils Isaiah 5:26, ‘He will lift up a banner to the nations from afar, and will whistle to them from the ends of the earth,’ to communicate that “we Kiwis” have heard the Master’s call. Brock states, “In Jerusalem, I

found a new voice, ‘Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies’ (Romans 8:33). I have become persuaded by God.” He was given the task of worshipping all over Jerusalem, with other musicians from around the world. He went to all the city gates to praise, he met and prayed for the IDF, sang at Calvary, Gethsemane, the Mount of Olives, and Absalom’s Tomb. “People of all nations just joined in, it was insane.” No institution was mentioned, no names, people of no reputation were present; just praising His name, thanking Him, for simply being who He is. In December 2017, Brock returns to Jerusalem, to take up a 3-month contract with Succat Hallel 24/7 prayer house. After that, who knows? He will go with the flow and see what happens. In 2018, he may return to New Zealand, to work with budding evangelists and worshippers from YWAM ZION, to take the tabernacle trailer from Cape Reinga to Bluff, and back again. “YWAM ZION have been awesome to me and really assisted me in my healing, submitting, and getting God’s direction. I’m just a rookie and starting out as a new creation. The Ministry Director of YWAM ZION, Beryl Henwood, is lovely and I’ve adopted her.” In closing, Brock states, “God showed up in my darkest hour. The cupboards were bare and I was exposed. I was persuaded by the message of the Cross and found that this useless solider, this donkey, the biggest fool around, had a home; one he does not deserve. This dog has a beloved owner and He is the risen Yeshua; a most intoxicating lover and companion, and I will serve Him all the remaining days, with everything I have and am. Yeshua must be rewarded for the suffering He endured, to purchase the souls of wicked men like me.” If you feel led to get involved, or for more info, contact Brock: brockdavis7777@gmail.com / NZ cell 021 036 1883

CHRISTIAN LIVING

Great Faith By Tak Bhana

F

aith is so highly prized; it’s the primary characteristic of God’s heroes, listed in Hebrews 11. With that in mind, let’s look at a Canaanite woman in Matthew 15:21, who, along with a Roman centurion, is one of two who Jesus commends, in the New Testament, for their great faith. This Canaanite possibly worshipped the god Astarte. But when life got difficult and she needed a miracle, she discovered her god was powerless to help. So her first step towards great faith was turning to Jesus, the only source of real help. Whatever problem(s) you’re facing Jesus is your answer, and you can take your first step of faith today. Love is a key to great faith. Faith works through love. (Galatians 5:6) When the Canaanite woman tracked Jesus down and cried out for him to heal her daughter, ‘He answered her not a word’. Jesus acted like He didn’t hear her. Have you felt desperate, but when you called out to God, He went silent? This woman could have walked away, rejected, angry, disappointed and offended, but she didn’t. She was so motivated by her love for her daughter, she would endure anything. Jesus’ silence tested her faith, but she held on. Then she heard Him tell His disciples ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel’, in other words, not to the Gentiles. She was a Gentile and she wasn’t deaf. She heard that, as an outsider, she had no right to make a claim on Jesus’ great power. That would discourage most people, but her great faith began to emerge, she refused to quit despite the discouragement. What to do now? Her faith shone

through as she persevered, despite all the obstacles that were being thrown in her path. In verse 25, we see that she came and humbly, she knelt before Him and worshipped. She understood Israel had the priority, but she could still worship Him. She knew He was extremely kind and she appealed to that aspect of His nature. Remember Hannah, who went through the heartache of barrenness. What did she do? She went to the temple each year and worshipped God. When God was silent she worshipped, likewise, when Jesus answered not a word to the Canaanite woman, she worshipped Him. In the end, both women got the desire of their hearts. What should we do, when we pray and pray and nothing happens? Let’s learn from Hannah and the Canaanite, and keep worshipping. Then Jesus called her a dog! Talk about adding insult to injury. ‘It’s not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs’. He was saying the Jews were the children and the Gentiles were the dogs; everybody knew that. Jews saw God’s blessing as the children’s bread and the Gentiles were outsiders, dogs! Maybe, the Jews who observed the Canaanite woman, begging Jesus to heal her daughter, were thinking, ‘hey, the kingdom of God is ours, we’re not letting the dogs in.’ So, who did let the Gentile dogs in? It was God. It was always in God’s plan that Jesus would open the door of salvation, for both Jews and Gentiles to come into his kingdom. Aren’t you glad that He let the dogs in? Still, nobody wants to be called a dog, not even today, when we think of a dog as man’s best friend. It was even more of an insult back in Jesus’ day, because most dogs were miserable, mean, ugly, strays and scavengers. But when Jesus called the Canaanite woman a dog, He wasn’t using the word for that kind of dog. He wasn’t shutting the door. He used the word for a little dog, a family pet. He was giving her a glimmer of hope, the door was open just the tiniest crack and quick as a flash, she got her foot in there. In Mark 7:27, Jesus says, ‘let the children be filled first’. With the word ‘first’, he was suggesting there is a second. The woman responded, ‘Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs.’ She agreed she was an outsider, ‘a dog’, with no claim to a child’s portion. But she did housework, she fed children, and she knew that as they ate, crumbs fell to the floor. She also

understood the cardinal rule of owning a dog; if anything falls on the floor it belongs to the dog. She also realised that a pet dog has a master. ‘Dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the masters table’. Call me a dog, she says, but if I’m a pet dog, then I’ve got a master. Stray dogs have to fend for themselves, but not pet dogs; you care for them, like they’re a part of the family. Jesus, You’re my master, I know You will provide for my need. The Canaanite woman’s words, ‘dogs eat the crumbs’, was the clincher. This was the priceless gem of faith Jesus was digging for. What great faith, what insight, when she said she only needed a crumb. She was so convinced, of Jesus’ power to heal and set people free that she knew she only needed a crumb. She didn’t need a whole loaf, not

even a whole slice. What she needed wouldn’t rob or deprive the Jews. She had no problem believing that a crumb of what Jesus had was more than enough to heal her daughter. Firstly, faith comes by hearing; the Canaanite woman heard and she believed. Secondly, faith works through love and she had a love for her suffering child that made her approach this stranger and endure His apparent rejection, until she got her miracle. Thirdly, she came humbly. Fourthly, she persevered. She didn’t cave in or give up, when she met with opposition. Finally, she worshipped. A scrap from God, a mustard seed of faith, one crumb of God’s mighty power is all you need for your breakthrough.

Titoki Healing Retreat Centre Going Strong after 40 Years

In 1976, Rev Don Ferguson founded Titoki Christian Healing Centre in Whakatane, with a vision for creating a place of retreat devoted to wholeness and healing of mind, body and soul through the loving power of Christ. Over forty years later, the strength of this vision remains evident at Titoki. The homestead style retreat centre and chapel are situated on spacious grounds, graced by mature trees. Guests come to Titoki for rest, respite, chapel services, prayer, missionary debriefing and spiritual formation re-

treats. Many people comment on the special sense of peace at Titoki. Through the years, dedicated volunteer leaders and team-members have carried out the Titoki vision. DAZ CHETTLE

FROM THE GUTTER TO INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION By Janet Balcombe

az is one of the most passionate and positive people you’ll ever meet straight up! You’re fascinated to find out what makes him tick; he’s so full of life and energy, it’s hard to imagine that life has ever been less than totally awesome for him. It’s so easy to judge people at a glance, but so often, the reality is quite the opposite and that is especially true in Daz’s case. Darren Chettle grew up in middle-class New Zealand. His dad was a workaholic and his mum; well, she had her own set of unhealed childhood trauma, which rendered her emotionally unavailable for Daz. Long story short, he grew up a very lonely, shy and insecure boy. Reading was hard for Daz. They didn’t know he was dyslexic. One day, when he was little, he was sitting on his grandfather’s knee struggling to read a book. Suddenly, his grandfather pushed him off his knee and spat, “You’re thick, just like your father!” These words were branded onto his soft, young heart and etched into his soul. He believed the lie and his school reports compounded it. He didn’t know that some people just learn differently. A few years later, Daz was struggling to spell a word in front of the class – his idea of a nightmare. As the class laughed at him, he was so overwhelmed with shame and fear of rejection that he peed himself in front of everyone, adding more fuel to the fire. Desperate for love and acceptance, Daz had sex for the first time on his thirteenth birthday - sex and drug addiction gathered intensity. Meanwhile, his mum had become a born-again Christian, in a charismatic Catholic church and was al-

ways on her knees praying for him. God would wake her at all hours, to pray for her lost son, when he was drunk, lying in the gutter. He stole money from her when he was 18-years-old and she made him go to church with her as part of the punishment. He thought it was some strange cult, with singing and dancing. There was a guest speaker that day, and he said to Daz, “Sir, you need to come here.” Daz wasn’t moving, so the guy came to him. “Sir, God has called you to be an itinerant international evangelist.” Daz said, “Oh yeah, cheers mate, thanks.” He had no idea what itinerant meant, or evangelism for that matter, but he knew he loved surfing. His grandfather had sown a seed of lies, but this man of God planted a seed in Daz, to preach the Gospel and bring life to the nations. By age 20, life was a party, and Daz was the life of that party. Addicted to LSD and cannabis; he partied all week, hiding behind a mask, so he couldn’t be hurt anymore. Sitting with his grandmother in a hospice one night, she looked him in the eye and said, “Darren, please cut your hair for my funeral.” He was shocked to the core and realised she was going to die. He went out that night and partied hard. The next day, he took her hand as she slipped in and out of consciousness. He was holding her hand, as she took her last breath and his world was badly rocked again. Daz threw even more sex, drugs, drinking and fighting at his pain; all the while desperate to be loved. Daz went to Australia - surfing and partying. While sick from Malaria

shots, his mate convinced him to go to church; he thought there might be food and chicks there. The preacher said, “Jesus left the 99 to go and find the one…” and Daz felt a beautiful warmth going up his arms, that he’d never felt from any drug he’d taken. He started crying; “It was so embarrassing, yet so beautiful.” He was tough on the outside, but on the inside broken, lost, sad and scared. The preacher told him to come to the front of the church, and again Daz was thinking, “There is NO way,” yet, he found himself walking up the front anyway. “God lassoed my heart and dragged me to the front of the church. I don’t know what prayer I said that day, but that moment changed my life forever. After that, I told everyone, everywhere I went, about Jesus. I didn’t know what evangelism was, but I just wanted to tell the world.” Daz still had addictions and wounds in his soul. He spent eight years with a Christian counsellor, working through issues, coming to terms with the end of his Christian marriage and receiving healing for his

soul. Some Christians got frustrated, because he wasn’t living the lifestyle they thought he should be - they had no idea what he’d come out of. He was doing incredibly well considering his past, but he wasn’t meeting their mark, but Jesus is a gentleman. Daz fell down and made mistakes, and Jesus held His hand out to him saying, “Come on son, I love you. Get back up.” His deep longing to be loved was fully realised and he was blown away by the love of God. He went to the Brownsville (USA) Revival by himself and had a deep encounter with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit; “Not with the Happy Spirit, not the Church Spirit – the Holy Spirit.” The holiness of the Holy Spirit was a game-changer for him. Understanding dawned that the Holy Spirit dwells in a holy place (us). He made a return trip to Brownsville and got wrecked all over again by the Holy Spirit. God brought a gorgeous wife for Daz in Briana; they are two people with one heart. Their busy and beautiful family now includes four kids aged; four-months, two-years, six-years and

ten-years of age. This year, 2017, has seen Daz ordained for ministry, by his pastors at Living Waters in Christchurch, and God open doors to the invite-only Reinhard Bonnke School of Evangelism. “It totally undid me. I thought I would learn to be a better preacher and evangelist, but I spent five days crying and learning that I’m a son, who is so deeply loved by His father. I came home different.” Daz has accepted a personal invitation from Reinhard Bonnke, to fund his trip to Nigeria, to be involved in Reinhard’s last crusade. Daz is putting a team together, to take back to the Christ for All Nations (CFAN), Reinhard Bonnke School of Evangelism, in Florida in 2018. 2018 sees Daz stepping out into full-time ministry, preaching the Gospel internationally and training the body of Christ in personal evangelism. He has been invited to attend Awakening Europe’s three-day intensive training course, on stadium evangelism, because he believes God is calling him to preach to the multitudes

Daz doesn’t miss an opportunity to tell people about Jesus, whether it’s in an aeroplane, a shopping mall, a masonic lodge or a mosque. He stands up and boldly tells, of the hope we have in Jesus. Daz says, “I’m so proud of my Dad and I want to tell the world about Him. ‘For God so loved the world, He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life’ (John 3:16). That’s so beautiful.” Make contact with Daz, to minister or train your church in evangelism, or speak to your young people, via www. dazchettle.com. I’VE FALLEN IN LOVE Ruth Corbett Here, is an autobiography with a difference. It is creatively written, in the form of stories, about the author’s life. Each chapter illustrates an aspect of God’s grace, as it has been worked out in her daily living. It is a sensitive, finely written portrayal of a spiritually guided life, ideal for personal or group reflection. “A personal story of both ordinary and extraordinary moments that have been life-defining for the author,” says Judy Turner, Deputy Mayor of Whakatane.

Bruce Gibbs, ONZM, says, “Ruth’s story of doing life God’s way is well told, in this engaging and challenging book. Read and celebrate love, sincerity, commitment and faith.” Marj Robertson notes: “This book provides honest, frank insights into her intimate walk with Jesus and her deep faith and joy, in the midst of the challenges and struggles of life.” Ruth Corbett lives in Whakatane. Among her creative writings, are course materials for language teaching, life stories and material for relationship classes. This is her first major book. FAMILY FIRST

Three Key Issues in the Next Three Years By Bob McCoskrie ASSISTED SUICIDE / EUTHANASIA

W

ith the new government now determined as a Labour / NZ First / Greens coalition, there are three key family issues that will be debated, and which we need families to speak up on.

MARIJUANA By negotiating a referendum on marijuana, the Green party has done us all a favour, by declaring the true intention of marijuana campaigners – full legalisation for personal use. Groups like NORML and the Drug Foundation have used medicinal marijuana and decriminalisation, as a smokescreen for the real goal. Legalising marijuana and the rise of Big Marijuana, is the wrong path if we care about public health, public safety, and about our young people. There are too many health risks, including the effect of marijuana on cognitive ability, cardiac function and psychosis. Families simply don’t want marijuana plants being grown next door, by dope dealers, in view of the children, tinnie houses on street corners and pot shops in local shopping areas, or marijuana being disguised as lollies and edibles, as has happened overseas. Colorado, for example, has more marijuana businesses than McDonalds and Starbucks combined. It remains highly ironic, that at the same time as we tear the labelling off cigarette packets, price them out of existence, and ban them from being smoked within breathing space of any living creature, supporters of marijuana are peddling the same myths, that we believed for far too long about tobacco – that marijuana is harmless. But of course, a new business market is all very exciting – especially one based on addiction. Could our current mental health services cope? They can’t even cope now. Past chair of the NZMA, Dr

Stephen Child exposes the paradox that New Zealand finds itself in right now. “How can we tout ‘Smokefree 2025’ while we discuss legalising an inhaled product, with more than 100 harmful substances?” Drug use is both a criminal and a health issue. There is a false dichotomy that criminal sanctions apparently haven’t worked, so we should ditch them all together and we should focus only on education and health initiatives. We should maintain both. The Vote Compass survey, run by TVNZ, rebuts the spurious and vested interest claims, made by NORML and the Drug Foundation that NZ’ers want marijuana laws liberalized (42% in favour, 41% opposed!). An independent 1 NEWS Colmar Brunton poll, in July also showed New Zealanders equally divided over the issue. Statistics obtained from the Ministry of Justice, by Family First NZ, under the Official Information Act, show that less than 10 people have been given a prison sentence for cannabis possession offences, in each of the last three years, and that even these sentences may be ‘influenced by their previous offending history’. While Family First welcomes a cautious approach, based on extensive research and appropriate safeguards around medicinal marijuana, any hint of legalising marijuana, for just recreational use, is the wrong path. Where do the Government parties stand? NZ First says, that any change must be subject to a referendum, although Winston Peters personally opposes decriminalisation. The Greens want cannabis made legal for personal use, and Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, appears to be undecided on the issue at the moment, although does believe in some form of law reform. 18 | Christian Life Issue Fifty-One November 2017

One of the main reasons that politicians (both in NZ and in overseas jurisdictions) have rejected attempts to decriminalise assisted suicide / euthanasia, is that they realised that ‘safeguards’, while sounding good, would not guarantee the protection required for vulnerable people, including the disabled, elderly, depressed or anxious, and those who feel themselves to be a burden, or are under financial pressure. The international evidence backs up these concerns, and explains why so few countries have made any changes to the law around this issue. There are contradictory messages when society rightly wants to take a zero-tolerance approach to suicide, yet at the same time, wants to approve a person taking their life. The potential for abuse and flouting of procedural safeguards, is a further strong argument against assisted suicide. The solution is to ensure a palliative care regime that is fully funded and world class. That’s where the politicians’ focus should be. The recent inquiry into assisted suicide / euthanasia had 16,000+ submissions (80% of all submissions) opposing assisted suicide / euthanasia. ACT MP, David Seymour’s private members bill, to allow assisted suicide will have its 1st Reading on this issue, possibly before the end of the year. Where do the Government parties stand? While the Labour party doesn’t have an official policy on euthanasia, our new Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern said, that she supports decriminalisation. The Green party has an official party policy to decriminalise assisted suicide, and NZ First has negotiated for Parliament to have a conscience vote, on whether David Seymour’s bill should be put to a referendum. (However, NZ First also called for a referendum on gay marriage during that debate, and the proposal was heavily defeated. Politicians don’t appear to like referendums!). Winston Peters says he is undecided on the euthanasia issue. Check our website on this issue www. RejectAssistedSuicide.nz

ABORTION During the election campaign, Labour leader, Jacinda Ardern said, “(Abortion) shouldn’t be in the Crimes Act. People need to be able to make their own decision. I want women who want access, to be able to have it, as a

right.” The abortion legislation is in the Crimes Act 1961 and in the Contraception Sterilisation and Abortion Act 1977, which was passed in accordance with the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Contraception Sterilisation and Abortion, appointed by the Labour government in 1975. The Royal Commission reported to Parliament in 1977 that: “The unborn child, as one of the weakest, the most vulnerable and most defenceless forms of humanity, should receive protection.” s187A of the Crimes Act limits abortion to 20 weeks. Without s187A, abortion becomes legal up to birth. When pressed on her proposal, Jacinda Ardern said:“We have time periods already set out in the law and I am not proposing changes to that. I am proposing it comes out of the Crimes Act.” Whilst the Prime Minister has rejected the most extreme proposal of abortion to birth, put forward by abortion pressure group ALRANZ (Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand), headed up by American abortion lobbyist Terry Bellamak, she has still committed to weakening New Zealand’s abortion laws, and is still providing very little detail on how this would work in practice. Contrary to misrepresentation by pro-abortion groups, any New Zealand woman who has an abortion under the current legislative guidelines and protections, is not committing an illegal act, and is therefore not considered a criminal. This claim is simply false scaremongering, aimed at deceiving people into supporting the introduction of an extreme abortion law in New Zealand. The existing safeguards are there to protect women from unlicensed premises and coercion. Our ultimate goal is to make abortion ‘unthinkable’! Where do the Government parties stand? While the Labour party doesn’t have an official policy on abortion, our new Prime Minister, Jacinda supports decriminalisation. The Green Party policy is to decriminalise abortion. NZ First believes abortions should be safe, legal and rare, and that any change must be subject to a binding referendum. Winston Peters is personally opposed to decriminalisation.
