NORM MCLEOD JANET BALCOMBE CATCHES UP WITH THE WARRIOR PASTOR WHO KNOWS NO LIMITS
T
hank God for the guy who told Norm McLeod that “One day, in the deepest darkest moment of your life, you’re going to need to call on the name of Jesus – and He will help you.” That guy was Norm’s best mate, expimp and drug dealer turned Jesus freak – and this was that day. Overdosing and paralysed, Norm lay facedown, drowning in a pool of his own vomit. He was in trouble. His mouth and one nostril were submerged and his remaining nostril would soon be blocked, as he couldn’t stop vomiting. Norm didn’t believe in God or Satan, but in what seemed to be the closing moments of his life, his world-view was about to be severely rocked. He heard

footsteps approaching and willed them to stop and help him; to roll him over so that he could breathe. The footsteps did stop. However what he heard as the person laughed at him, was straight from the pit of hell… “I’ve got you this time!” At that moment he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Satan and hell were real – and that’s where he was headed right now. Norm had seen his best mate’s life totally transformed by a miracle healing and had heard all about his Jesus. Norm was happy for him, but wasn’t ready for religion. He was enjoying his lifestyle of sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. But Norm’s deepest, darkest moment

had arrived. He couldn’t call out with his mouth because it was literally submerged in vomit, so he cried out to Jesus in his mind, with all his heart, “JESUS, HELP ME!” Instantly his head stopped spinning and the vomiting ceased. It took an hour for the paralysis to subside and finally he was able to get up and slowly but surely make his way home. Norm had grown up in Oamaru, his father European, his mother Maori. In spite of a loving family background, the biker lifestyle, along with violence and martial arts, had sunk their claws deeply into him. Norm knew Jesus had saved him that terrible day – but it wasn’t until 1979, two years later that he and his wife Jess, totally dedicated their lives to Him. For the next ten years Norm served under Pastor John Ballantyne in Oamaru until receiving a supernatural mandate to go to Gisborne and start a warrior church. In 1989 the Spirit of God, suspended him in mid air over Poverty Bay – a place he had neither been to or seen, took Norm up in an open vision. As he looked down he saw many unmanned waka (Maori war canoes) sitting still on the shimmering sea. He heard the audible voice of God say to him, “You will come to this place and raise up for Me a warrior church.” As he heard the Lord’s voice he saw people coming up out of the earth as he spoke of Christ to them, and they went and took their places in the waka.

The Lord’s voice continued, “When it is time I will send these waka forth by the wind of My Spirit into the city, the coast, the nation and to distant shores of other lands. These waka will take My warriors who will share My message of hope in My power.” Then Norm saw the fully manned waka moving into the places that God’s voice commanded them to go. In 1991 Norm and Jess moved to Gisborne in obedience to God. They knew no one, but when they planted the House of Breakthrough, it grew strongly. There were new converts from the first service attendance of 31, to 500 in the first four years. Revival and miraculous signs and wonders followed them right from the start with a girl healed of AIDs. Tumours and cancers were healed, arthritics walked into services with sticks – and walked out without them. Abuse victims, addicts, gang members and the broken, flocked into the presence of God and received healing and salvation. The church’s phenomenal growth and involvement in helping gang members find a better way of life caught the attention of national television that featured them on TVNZ programmes (Assignment and Extreme Close Up). As God promised, he gave them the nations as well. Over the last two and a half decades Norm and Jess have led ministry teams nationally and internationally. Many of the team members are people who were once captives but are now free

of addictions, fears and dysfunction and now encourage and help others find freedom in Christ. Kapa Haka and healing teams have gone out from the House of Breakthrough to Fiji, Vanuatu, Cambodia, Malaysia, India, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia, the United States and England. Today, House of Breakthrough churches in India are experiencing ongoing revival in the supernatural manifest presence of God, resulting in thousands coming to Christ. Norm and Jess equip, empower and deploy God’s people to go beyond just academic theology and operate in “realogy.” This year alone Norm has ministered in Chile, Fiji, Australia, Pakistan, India and Singapore, seeing thousands saved and hundreds of God’s people encouraged, empowered and deployed. From one extreme to the other, Norm and Jess have been serving God now for thirty-six years. So thank God for Norm’s mate! Let’s be that guy. The one who tells someone else the one thing that will save his or her life. That Jesus saves. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Rom 10:13

Christian media entrepreneur MATT DANSWAN who publishes Christian Life and numerous other publications, recently launched a free, online, on-demand Christian TV channel. He talks to MARIE ANTICICH about the everchanging world of modern media.
Q
ON-DEMANDA NEW INITIATIVE
ueensland-based Matt Danswan and his wife Nicole entered the Christian media arena twelve years ago with their company, Initiate Media. Today the multi-national company produces 31 publications, including the daily online newspaper My Christian Daily, the glossy Christian Woman magazine, ‘Find-a’ magazines – find a Christian school, college, mission or business, and now Channel C. The enterprising couple publish New Zealand’s own Christian Life news-magazine which is freely available at Christian bookshops, and at churches and conferences, on request. “We see Christian Life as a blessing to New Zealand,” says Matt who launched the monthly trans-denominational newsmagazine in 2013, after Challenge Weekly (CW) closed down. When he heard that CW was closing he suggested – through their shared advertising representative Ray Curle – that CW change to a free monthly magazine. “But they decided to close, and so
Matt with daughter Ava
we introduced Christian Life to the market to fill the void,” says the former surf champion and father of three. He felt the free model – with no subscriptions or postal costs – was best for New Zealand. “Paid subscribers tend to be the 50-60 age group, and so being a free publication gives us a wider demographic and we can cater for readers 30 to 80 years old.” Christian Life publishes 11 issues a year and aims to give readers a wide and varied view of the Christian world” “We don’t want a ho-hum publication - we want to be the light and publish inspiring stories of lives transformed by the Gospel.” Initiate Media also produces a daily online newspaper called My Christian Daily (MCD) which can be viewed on email or via www.mychristiandaily. co.nz. Christian Life can also be read on the MCD website, but Matt doesn’t see CL going totally digital. “The heart of My Christian Daily is that we cover general news and issues the mainstream media isn’t as quick to
cover,” says Matt. “Mainstream media often becomes a menu for celebrity fodder and tends to breeze over massively important issues like gay marriage and abortion. So we mix it up for readers and ensure we’re covering the key elements of news and issues that really matter to Christians.” MCD is produced by an in-house editor and supplements news aggregated from other news sources with feature articles from leading Christian bloggers, many of whom are pastors and authors. CONSTANT CHANGE Last year the Danswan family moved their base from Sydney to Queensland, to lower their overheads and free up capital and expand the business. Matt and Nicole work closely together: “We talk and strategise and make sure we’re doing all the ‘one percent’ things to keep things running smoothly across our diverse range of products.” As Initiate’s Art Director, Nicole oversees creative processes across all
print and digital media, and designs Christian Life and the glossy Christian Woman magazine (of which she is editor) and designs book covers under their Ark House imprint (www.arkhousepress.com) “Book publishing is one of our biggest and most robust divisions,” says Matt. “Since we started Ark House we’ve published nearly 300 books, won Christian Book of the Year awards in Australia, and we’ve published close to 30 news books this year.” Initiate staff have worked hard over the years to navigate the difficult transition from being a one-magazine, print-based operation, into a multi-media company which now incorporates digital television. Technology like the internet, iPads and e-books has turned the business world upside down and allowed media companies to enter unprecedented new markets, he observes. “There’s a whole new world out there with opportunities galore. Some people are hopping into the market and some are

hopping out. But if you’re going to play in the media space, you’ve got to realise the pace of change won’t abate.” Not knowing what’s around the corner makes it hard to plan staffing levels, budgets and forecasting, he adds. “There aren’t a lot of Christians actively trying to grow this space,” he remarks. “The harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few. Our success is due to the fact that we put up our hand and take opportunities as they come. I say ‘God, I’m going to do this, unless you stop me.’” Three months ago Matt launched Channel C, a free online on-demand Christian television channel, which is accessed via the internet. Christian ministries pay a small monthly fee to screen their programmes on the Channel C website, and viewers can watch what they want, when they want free of charge. “It’s a new concept in Christian TV, and I believe it’s going to be a game-changer,” he predicts. “With all respect, I think Christian TV has been doing the same thing for a long time. Television is mainly restricted to running 30-minute programmes of high definition quality, and only big American ministries and a few local ones can produce footage at this level. “Channel C isn’t restricted to 30-minute time slots so we can screen lots of amazing shorter film clips, videos and testimonies. So we’re offering something different.” By just clicking on www.channelc.net, viewers can watch videos, preaching and podcasts on their computer, laptop, smartphone or iPad. “This is only the start,” he promises. “As technology continues to change you’ll soon be watching Channel C on your smart TV. This is possible right now for early adapters who already have smart TV’s.” PERSONAL TESTIMONY “My parents got divorced when I was four years old,” says Matt who has one sister and a few step-brothers and sisters. “While that made for a testing upbringing, it also led to my mother becoming a Christian. So I was brought up in the church, went to Christian School (he later became School Captain) and ultimately grew up in a great Christian environment. “I built my foundations on the rock of God, and so my life has been ‘steady as she goes,’” he reflects. Surfing was a major passion: “My dad had a house right on the beach and so I surfed mornings and afternoons and entered competitions on weekends. Like his father, a retired businessman, Matt has been self-employed for most of his working life: “During my school years I managed to save just under $20,000 from my part-time job as a milkman, and from selling all my surfing prizes. So, pretty
much the day after I left school, I had the money to start my own lawnmowing business.” Later he launched into the publishing world and produced Triathlon Monthly and secular business magazines through his Ink Publishing company. He and Nicole were married in 2002 and made their first foray into Christian publishing five months later. “I heard that Alive magazine was closing down and wrote to the publisher. He suggested we meet so I flew down to Melbourne and by the end of that day we’d taken on the magazine.” Nicole left her job at their church to design and run Alive, while Matt took care of his other business interests. “At that time Alive was Australia’s leading inter-denominational Christian magazine, but it has now essentially been superseded by our online newspaper My Christian Daily. Now the Australian market has a print equivalent in The Christian Pulse magazine.” After their first child was born in 2004, Matt sensed a shift in his vision: “I went from being excited about the secular business world to losing interest in it.” Looking back, he believes the Lord was showing him a new vision for the future: “I never expected to be in full-time missional ministry – I always felt I’d be a mainstream businessman, and help support churches and missions. “But one night at church the preacher said, ‘Someone here needs to do one thing differently. Do that, and everything will change’ and it struck me like lightning that God wanted me to go into fulltime Christian publishing. From that moment I absolutely committed to Him to set about creating a vibrant Christian media company.” Soon afterwards they put in a successful bid for Christian Woman, and the Christian Business Directory and further launches soon saw Initiate Media become one of the leading Christian publishers in the Southern Hemisphere. While walking the dog one night, Matt felt the Lord say, ‘Don’t ask for money and don’t borrow money.’ So basically I did a deal with God that night, saying: ‘We’ll run this business by faith if You’ll give us business strategies and ideas.’ That’s what provides our needs to this day. God gives me ideas, we act upon them, and they bear financial fruit. “It’s a massive walk of faith and not for the faint-hearted – paying staff and raising three children in a private Christian school– I wouldn’t want do it off my own bat, but I’m happy and proud to say that’s how we run our business. It’s been close to the bone at times, especially during the Global Financial Crisis, but we continually hold onto God and when things get difficult, the vision carries you. “This makes Christian Life a very unique mission in the way we feel called to run it. Publishing a standalone magazine has its challenges, but Initiate Media’s strength is that we have other income streams, and it’s this point difference that has allowed us to succeed,” he asserts. “Our strength lies in diversity – we have a number of publications and that gives us a wider income stream. That’s our funding
6 | Christian Life Issue Thirty December 2015/January 2016
model. We never ask people or organisations for money but we totally rely on God giving us commercial ideas to support what we do. “It would be easier to be a not-for-profit organisation and apply for funds from trusts, and run a donation drive for readers. But we don’t do for that because we feel donations should go to churches, charities and missions. Even though Christian Life is a mission, we don’t go to our market looking for funding.” 2009 WAS A MEMORABLE YEAR “The change towards digital was hitting the publishing world hard, and we were under pressure at work. In the middle of that year our third child was born in the front seat of the car in a petrol station. We were trying to get to the hospital. “Our other two children were in the back seat when the baby was being born. It was stressful but now we look back and laugh – it was such a special moment and we felt it was God’s way of saying ‘I am with you.’” When the Global Financial Crises hit, they realised they needed to ‘up the ante’ on their digital strategy. “It’s a different world now,” Matt states. “The digital era is changing the marketplace and affecting every industry. I think people need to rely on God now more than ever in this tumultuous world.” Today Initiate Media is a global company: “Nothing is just based in Queensland. We operate globally with a global workforce. We have staff in the USA, India, Australia and New Zealand – in this digital world you can be based anywhere and so we’ve pushed out our boundaries – and America is starting to become a major market for us. “When you’re doing this kind of missional work, the further you can spread the message the better. It’s a bit of a no-brainer – we want to impact as many people as we can – so we have a huge vision to keep expanding at the pace we’re at. It’s exhausting and I just fall into bed most nights, but God has given us the energy and the vision, and so I want to play a part in using media to spread the Word to the ends of the earth. “Once upon a time companies had to set up individual offices, but the digital age allows us to operate with virtual staff from virtual locations. We’re using modern technology to create the best possible media company we can – we stay connected with staff via the internet (cloud-based computing systems), Skype and our shared telephone systems. We’re all connected, all over the world.” Says Matt Danswan: “We look forward to continuing to leverage cutting-edge technology to make God’s name famous throughout the world for decades to come.”

Summer is Prime Harvest Time for OAC Evangelists Harvest time in the fields may be autumn, but in the schools and motor camps and Christian camps it is in the summer. OAC National Director, Lew Meyer, reports that they have had exceptional opportunities in Bible In School Assemblies with their Waikato/ Auckland team (see photo) and their Christchurch teams programming in over 50 schools to combined class assemblies The Auckland team, along with music and ventriloquism, featured a play where Dr Who arrives at zero BC and meets Mary, Joseph and Jesus. Say’s Lew, “Our Tardis got a bit time warped, but the children and adults loved it, and we got great reviews from teachers. Bible in schools might be falling out of favour with some atheistic adults, but is certainly isn’t with the children, nor with most teachers.
Beach missions are still part of the OAC strategy with amazing results in the discipleship and equipping of so many young people. Teams this year are full. The photo features the Easter Bay of Plenty teams in training for coming action. Christian camps also get into full swing in January with OAC providing a lot of their children’s evangelists. Lew says “We’ll preach the gospel, but can believers please do the praying, that we can work in partnership for the glory of God and the extension of his Kingdom.” Team photo: Tania Payton (Mary), Tim Toehemotu (Wise Man), Lewis Bacon (Joseph), Alistair Carter (Santa) and Lew Meyer (Dr Who).

David is the CEO of the Thames Coromandel District Council, and says he was attracted to FEBC by its history and its model. “Started by WW2 soldiers whose hearts stirred deeply to rebuild the Orient on the Good News of Christ by radio, FEBC became a lifeline to many, especially in China during the ensuing Mao years. The Model today is one of least Western involvement to support local Christians to reach local communities. The work of FEBC in emergency response after the Boxing Day Tsunami, and through to the Nepal earthquakes this year, makes me proud of the balance the mission has.” Executive Director, Matt Perry, says he is looking forward to David’s expertise building on the strong foundations of the mission in New Zealand. Catching youth who are falling through the gap Young people in the notorious Palmerston North suburb of Highbury have big dreams, and former teacher Julene Kapao is determined to enable them to realise these as one of six inspiring New Zealanders, plus one fellow, to receive a 2016 Vodafone World of Difference Award. Julene, the former head of religious education at Longburn Adventist College, will receive financial and professional support from the Vodafone Foundation for one year while she works for Te Aroha Noa Community Services (TANCS) to support young people as they strive to reach their goals. Over the past 13 years, the Vodafone Foundation has contributed more than $20 million towards helping youth in communities throughout New Zealand. Julene says, “I believe education is vital, but so often the barriers outweigh the potential of
a young person. These kids are dealing with extremely challenging circumstances and the current education system just doesn’t fit them.” These young people have great ambitions, she says. “One wants to be a dancer, another a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) nurse and one an artist. One of my guys is even teaching himself to play guitar using YouTube.” At Christian-based organisation Te Aroha Noa Community Services and with the help of the Vodafone Foundation World of Difference grant, Julene will lead ground-breaking work to re-engage young people in employment, academic and sporting opportunities. An official awards evening led by His Honour Judge Andrew Becroft, Principal Youth Court Judge of New Zealand, in Auckland on Tuesday December 8 will see Julene presented with her award.

VOICES OF PAIN AND THE VOICE OF HOPE By Alexis Waterhouse Price: $24.95 + postage
Voices of Pain and the Voice of Hope is a visual, textural and emotional journey through pain to hope. It is designed to expose the lies (or patterns of negative thinking) that entrap people suffering through emotional pain or mental health issues. It uses poetry, art, photography and reflection to expose and normalise the common patterns of thinking in emotional pain. For example, one of the biggest lies is that the individual is alone in their pain and that no-one will understand them – or if others knew they would be rejected. This causes them to isolate and withdraw from those around them that can help. Finally it encourages the reader to continue on their journey of healing; and to seek help and community. The book also teaches mindfulness
and grounding techniques which teach skills that empower the reader to pause, breathe and reflect in the moment (so they can make powerful and positive decisions) regardless of whether the situation is encouraging or challenging. All profits from the sale of this book go directly to A Girl Called Hope www.agirlcalledhope.org Author Alexis Waterhouse is a counsellor and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist from Auckland, New Zealand. The Seven Letters of Jesus Christ, the bright and Morning Star, to the churches in Revelation and for the churches today.
Christ has left on record how the churches would perform down through the ages. What did He say and what was His advice? These letters are crucial for understanding what is happening in Christendom today. In these letters Christ reports on seven churches in existence at the time John received the revelation. The description of the churches speak of trials that since John’s day have continued through the ages. Some see the seven letters as descriptive both of seven ages that the church has gone through, and of issues that have persisted in all of them. In addition, the letters allude to events that still await a future fulfillment. In short, these letters are for us to learn from today.
In his book As It Is, Gordon Copeland writes with clarity about the restoration of Christian values as the key to our nation’s future. “I believe that this land of ours can do better and be better, if political polices flow from and are based on those values”. Gordon covers a wide range of issues including abortion, euthanasia, housing affordability, the breakdown of the family, the importance of marriage and reducing inequality through a fairer tax system. He sets out a passionate vision for New Zealand’s future drawing on both his six years in Parliament and his background in business and the Church. He also writes about conscience which is hardly prominent in books by ex-parliamentarians! For Copeland conscience is paramount. For him the

This book is a most read for all who are concerned about New Zealand’s and their families’ futures and long to see change based on the restoration of biblical principles and values. Every three years we get to choose which Party to vote for and As It Is is well worth heeding by all interested in parliamentary processes and party positions. The Seven Letters cover the Church Age – that is, the period between the first coming of Christ as the Lamb of God and His second coming as the Lion of Judah. The Church Age is a prequel to the age to come which is called the Millennium, which Christ will establish on His return to reign, and about which he advised us to watch and pray. REVIVAL
BLOWING THE TRUMPET FOR REVIVAL PRAYER CHRISTAN LIFE CAUGHT UP WITH LLEON DOWNES – WELL KNOWN WORLD VISION REPRESENTATIVE FOR MANY YEARS – NOW SHARING A NEW VISION. After retiring from World Vision in 2001 God has placed me in various occupations – Christian Broadcasting Association, 5 years Property Manager at KingsWay School, 4 years as Truancy Officer working with Coast Community Trust, a ministry of Whangaparaoa Baptist Church. In the Hibiscus Coast we are encouraged by the increase in number of churches, now 23, and generally all are growing. I believe it is the result of strong prayer groups that have developed over the past 10 years or more. • Men of Prayer group was formed after 80 men went to Promise Keepers Conference in 2002. P.K. encourages men to meet regularly and we meet 1st Monday of the month at a different church, worship and prayer for 2 hours, then enjoy a shared meal at 9pm. We continually pray for unity of churches, and now Pastors meet regularly socially and last year some meet weekly for prayer – praise God. • Graham Braddock initiated a “Half Night of Prayer” held on the 3rd Friday of each month when God takes us through NZ and around the world in prayer. • Tim, a NZ missionary in China for 22 years had a dream of a huge tsunami descending on NZ – a physical one! He made contact with Graham Braddock and another strong intercessory group was formed, headed by Tim
and wife, Faith. They committed themselves to 10 weeks in Hibiscus Coast and what a wonderful blessing they were to us, and we felt a break through in the heavenly realms over NZ. • I had a call from Joy, one of our group the morning after the 5th meeting. “Lleon, I have a word for you – Joel 2:1 – Blow the trumpet Sound the alarm Let the people tremble The day of the Lord is coming” Back in the days, when I was working for World Vision, I did many trips throughout Northland, promoting the 40 Hour Famine to many schools, working with about 120 very committed volunteers and preaching to churches as I was invited. I developed a brochure for churches, encouraging them to “Fast and Pray” for 40 hours during the Famine weekend, not necessarily raising funds for World Vision, but to focus on praying for their church, community and New Zealand. Part of my message was the time Jesus was baptized, went into the desert for 40 days, came out not only full of the Holy Spirit but began His ministry in the Power of the Holy Spirit. Then the Holy Spirit began to whisper to me “Lleon, when are you going to Fast for 40 days for me” Eventually, I relented and carried on fasting in March 1995 after the 40 Hour Famine had finished. To keep
my wife Mary happy I was monitored by my doctor, and in faith carried on with my work up to a few days before the end. I decided to go away on my own so traveled to Ohope Beach, out from Whakatane, staying with my sister. On the 3rd May, my last day, I walked onto the beach, and sat on a log. The waves were tremendous after an easterly storm. My then non-Christian brother, Richard, had advised me to take a note book because “God will probably speak to you, so take notes”. I still keep that notebook in my Bible. Excerpts from the vision I believe God gave me for N.Z. • Holy Spirit coming over NZ like a giant wave • Cleansing the land of innocent blood shed • Reuniting families – children to their parents • Bringing people from all ethnic groups to Christ • Raising NZ as a model multicultural society • Critical preparation: Communities to gather together and intercede in preparation 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people – I will heal the land” Generally, I have kept my vision to myself except for special occasions, but I now believe God wants me to “Blow the trumpet, sound the alarm”, call God’s people to take 2 Chronicles7:14 on board and form intercessory groups throughout NZ in preparation
of revival to descend upon NZ, as has been prophesized for so many years. I remember Tom Marshall’s words to me over 30 years ago… “Revival will begin in small rural areas then spread to major towns”. So there are many “flickering flames” of strong prayer groups, building up more powerfully, waiting on the Holy Spirit to join them together and sweep through NZ like a roaring fire – or like a “giant wave” as the Lord has shown me. I met up with Ray and Jan Curle at the May Northern Leaders’ meeting at Moerewa where I shared with them the “Blow the Trumpet” concept”. They invited us to their church in the small rural town of Ruawai and were very encouraged by the number of their congregation who came forward to join their intercessory group. Last month Pastor Graeme Baucke of Virtue Christian Centre, Kaitaia, invited me to “Blow the Trumpet” at their Sunday service. Again I was greatly encouraged by the number who committed themselves to pray for their church and community – to be the hub of prayer for Northland.
If you would like to invite Lleon and Mary to “Blow the Trumpet” at your church you can contact him at lleonmary@xtra.co.nz Ph 09 426 0355
BILL SUBRITZKY, 90 AND STILL GOING STRONG Many of New Zealand’s leading pastors and evangelists gathered on Sunday 22nd of November to help Bill Subritzky celebrate his 90th birthday along with friends and family. Apostle Viliamu (founder and head of one hundred Samoan churches worldwide) shared how his nation has changed since Bill preached the gospel and ministered in God’s power to them. Christian Life wishes you a very happy birthday, Bill. Left: Peter Mortlock, Brian France, Paul de Jong, Max Legg praying a blessing on Bill

LOCAL EVENT
GISBORNE’S GOSPEL ROOTS FESTIVAL, 15-18 JANUARY It’s hard not to have fun in the sun in stunning Gisborne, and the Gospel Roots Festival definitely guarantees it! The star-studded lineup includes Kirk Franklin from the USA, Ginny Blackmore, Annie Crummer, Rob Ruha, Maisey Rika, Ria Hall, Seth Hapu and Adeaze plus many more top acts. Speakers and workshop leaders include Ps Norm McLeod, Cindy Ruakere, Frank Naea, Dr Jenny Te Paa Daniel, Sam Chapman just to name a few. Gospel Roots also brings together some of the most outstanding Kapa Haka champions and pioneers on the planet. Gospel Roots is an initiative of Te Pīhopatanga o Te Tairāwhiti (The Māori Anglican Church in Tairāwhiti) alongside the Anglican Diocese of Waiapu. Supporting partners include Te Rau Theological College, The Tamararo Kapa Haka Festival, The House of Breakthrough (Gisborne), and Equippers Church (Gisborne). The Tairāwhiti region has a proud Gospel heritage that stretches back almost 200 years. Over that time generations of our people have been inspired by the Gospel to develop their whānau and communities, express themselves through art and music, build churches, schools and marae,
develop charitable organisations and businesses, and make positive contributions locally and globally. The Gospel Roots Festival is a celebration of the rich gospel heritage of Tairāwhiti, of Aotearoa-New Zealand, Polynesia and beyond and the positive principles of the Gospel – aroha, peace, and joy. Festival organisers have sought to build an alcohol-free event that is open, safe, and welcoming to all people whether they are church-fanatics or not. The beachside camping has free access to the Olympic Pools and hydro slide for those staying in the family camping area. There’s a dedicated play area for preschoolers, a surf school, and an onsite Theme Park! “We’re also not ashamed of our Gospel heritage – we’re proud of the incredible joy, healing, creativity, and sense of purpose that it’s brought to so many people over so many generations. That’s why we’re taking the time to celebrate the best that our Gospel heritage has to offer, and to let the Gospel speak for itself,” says Marketing & Communications Manager, Emma Marino.

Living Word Bookcentre
Thames Christian Bookshop
Living Word Bookcentre opened in December 1978 in Alexandra St, Hamilton. Fourteen years later, having outgrown the premises, the shop moved to much larger premises in Collingwood Street where it traded for 22 years.
Thames Christian Bookshop has been serving the Coromandel for over twenty years. The shop is managed by Lisa Hollis with the help of four wonderful volunteers. Prior to this, Lisa was a loyal customer who didn’t want to see the shop close when previous managers, Chas & Frances Ladbrook, retired.
A third move was necessary in 2013 when the landlord in Collingwood St wanted to demolish the building. 634 Victoria St, with a lighter brighter central location close to Centre Place and more parking nearby, was perfect.
Situated in the historic Grahamstown end of Pollen St, the shop has a lively market each Saturday and has drawn cafes and speciality shops to this end of town. Many loyal customers have become our friends and we love our chats and cuppas!
Now in it’s 38th year, Living Word remains committed to providing life-changing Christian resources and a great range of DVDs and gifts to build up the body of Christ and equip believers to share the Good News. Lynn and Anita will assist with sourcing all your needs.
