REEDSBURG AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY PIONEER LOG VILLAGE E7882 Hwy. 33 This seasonal stop (June– October) will take you back to a time when there were no phones, bathrooms, running water or electricity. This collection of log buildings from the area is nestled in the pines just 3 miles east of Reedsburg at Hwy. 33. The village features fully furnished log homes, a church, school, general store, blacksmith shop, library and three museum buildings. The village is only open weekends or by appointment, but it is well worth fitting into your vacationing schedule. ROCK SPRINGS WISCONSIN BIG CAT RESCUE AND EDUCATIONAL CENTER A place for you and your family to come visit and see the most majestic animals on earth—THE BIG CATS. Come see lions, tigers and leopards, all living out their life in peace and tranquility, here at the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue. The animals here were brought in for a safe and healthy home. The gorge was formed when the Baraboo River carved a path through Baraboo quartzite, Cambrian sandstone, and conglomerate. Shear cliffs rise about 200 feet above the river, and extend for three-quarters of a

mile. "The site tells a fascinating geological story of changing conditions in an ancient sea that first rose quietly against a cliff of quartzite and then, as layers of sediments gradually decreased the relief between sea floor and land, surged against the top of the cliff, wearing away quartzite and depositing a layer of cobbles and boulders across its upturned edge," notes a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources description. Thousands of years of weathering and quarrying during the last century, have exposed virgin rock faces in the gorge. Ableman’s Gorge is owned by the DNR and the University of Wisconsin and was designated a State Natural Area in 1969. SAUK CITY & PRAIRIE DU SAC NATURAL BRIDGE STATE PARK Sauk City The highlight of this 560 acre park is a large sandstone arch. A rock shelter on the site is believed inhabited by humans over 11,000 years ago. Open Spring - Fall. Wisconsin State Park Pass required. Circus World “For 2013 we are putting the emphasis on fun,” says Performance Director Dave SaLoutos. “Everyone needs an escape, and nothing does it better than a day at the circus.” Laughter is stress relief; relaxing the body, boosting your immune system, and releasing endorphins that promote mental and physical health. So as the song “Greatest Show On Earth” boldly declares, “Come to the circus and laugh your cares away!” Summer fun begins when Vlastek and Kim Valla-Bertini, multi-generational circus artists, step into the ring. Vlastek performs wild and crazy stunts on an Olympic trampoline with hilarious results. The couple also presents their fast-paced acrobatic unicycle act, a long tradition with the Valla-Bertini family, known as the world’s finest Acrobatic Unicyclists. Adding excitement to the act are their young son Vincent and his adorable 2 year old sister, Violet. Direct from Columbia, South America is Kevin Sadrak, a young contortionist who combines the grace of a trained dancer with the athletic abilities of an Olympic gymnast. His act is a rapid display of dramatic physicality and mind-blowing flexibility that almost defies description. This year, one of Circus World’s biggest summer productions begins early. On March 4, illusionist Tristan Crist, known for his energetic and charismatic onstage persona, returns to Circus World with a terrific new show. Tristan’s new production

will play twice each day, Monday through Friday, and then 7 days a week throughout the summer. Pushing the boundaries of traditional magic, audiences are treated to a large-scale magic, comedy and illusion show, perfect for the entire family. From Houdini comes Tristan’s escape from a locked, metal jail cell with a surprise finish that will leave you baffled and bewildered. Tristan defies gravity, floating through a solid metal hoop, and continuing to rise until reaching the top of the theatre. Witness the mystery of solid through solid amplified as Tristan crawls through the spinning blades of an industrial-sized fan. Mixing in a generous dose of humor, Tristan always leaves his audiences invigorated and richly entertained. Theatre of Illusion continues in the fall with two performances each day through November 15. Neal Skoy returns as everyone’s favorite clown Roger, whose bumbling shenanigans bring big smiles and even bigger belly laughs. A veteran of two 40-state tours with The Greatest Show On Earth, and numerous theatrical roles throughout the Minneapolis area, Neal says, “People need laughter in their lives, and there’s nothing I’d rather do than make people laugh.” Honoring the time-honored tradition of animals in the circus, the Big Top Show will include an amazing single performing elephant. Also appearing in the circus ring is the Rhesus Monkey Comedy Revue, created by Davide Zoppe, a sixth generation circus artist. Davide always loved the creativity of show business, and

has produced an act that is different from anything else. The Zoppe Comedy Rhesus Monkey Revue also includes a Black Celebes Ape that is a real crowd pleaser. Davide is married to Susan, a show business veteran since age two and together they originated The Royal Afghan Champions. The beauty of these incredible high-jumping Afghans, with their long, silky hair is breathtaking, and unlike anything the entertainment field has seen before. The real star of the act however, is a Persian cat who steals the show! This is the only act of its kind in the world, completely original and loads of fun. The Zoppe’s acts have been a hit with audiences across the US, Mexico, Canada, and overseas. Rounding out the day are guided tours of the world’s largest circus wagon collection, and the Novelty Instruments Concert – a popular side show feature of long ago. Engaging programs like the Kids’ World Interactive Circus and the Circus Skills Adventure allow kids to be circus performers. Elephant rides, pony rides, antique carousel rides and a petting menagerie bring big smiles. Thrill artist, Eddie Monserrate electrifies the crowd every day by leaping, soaring, and diving on a massive, rotating, 30-foot tall “Wheel of Destiny.” The circus continues to be an incredible entertainment value, enjoyed by people of all ages, everywhere. It is wholesome fun that brings audiences together in a fantasy world of thrills and laughter. Amish Country The Amish communities of Wisconsin are centered in three general areas: in the northeastern part of the state south and east of the city of Eau Claire; in the southeast region stretching from Whitewater down to Beloit; and in the south-central region, including our very own counties of Columbia, Green Lake, Marquette and Sauk. Generally, all the Amish in south-central Wisconsin are Old Order Amish, with no tractors in the fields, few telephones except at an occasional shop or along a lonely lane, hook-and-eye closures on clothing instead of buttons, and small one-room schoolhouses. One can find several Amish businesses, or businesses supporting Amish heritage, along many routes in the area. Most of these roads are very old and follow the "lay of the land", and were constructed using routes in existence in the 1700's and 1800's. Once into the interior of Amish country, it is impossible to get anywhere quickly! Please slow down and show courtesy to horse-drawn wagons and buggies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we want everyone to remain safe. Besides, scenery is always more enjoyable when viewed at a slower pace. You will wind along bluff tops, down alongside rushing creeks and through uplands dotted with farms and country churches. The lodging and food choices here are fewer but perfectly fine; ranging from country inns to family motels to cabins. Enjoy a quiet drive through Amish country and discover a simpler time and an area rich in heritage.

Lake Wisconsin Wisconsin means dark waters in a Native American language. The dark water of the Wisconsin River and Lake Wisconsin comes from the very dark roots of the Tamarack trees which line its banks in the northern part of the state and bleed a natural dye into the river. Many varieties of fish thrive in these waters, making Lake Wisconsin and the Wisconsin River a fisherman’s paradise. The 9,500 acre lake has 57 miles of shoreline, and the lake and river have more than 18 miles of navigable waterway with a depth that varies to a maximum of 40 feet. Boaters love to dock at the many sand bars for a swim, picnic or even to camp overnight. Tourists from all over the world come here to relax and enjoy this beautiful area. Once a favorite hunting and fishing ground of

the early tribes, it is now a popular tourist destination for camping and water sports, as well as more leisurely activities and family adventures. The Merrimac Ferry, named “Colsac” because it bridges Columbia and Sauk counties, is a highlight to experience and the only free ferry in the state. It crosses the Wisconsin River from Highway 113 in Merrimac south to the junction of Highways 188 and 113 just north of Lodi. Trip time is about 10 minutes, and 15 cars (trailers too) can cross at one time. It runs 24 hours a day during the months the lake is not frozen. Top it off with a stop at a nearby restaurant or ice cream stand.

Lake Wisconsin is part of the Wisconsin River system created by the dam in Prairie du Sac. The dam began construction in 1915 and was completed sometime in 1924. From a favorite hunting and fishing ground of the early Indian tribes in the area, it is now a popular tourist destination for boating, fishing, camping, hunting and all family adventures. The area has campgrounds, resorts, motels, taverns, and fine dining to entice almost any vacationer. Every season is spectacular and will provide memories for a lifetime. Lake Wisconsin is 9500 acres and has 57 miles of shoreline. Depth varies to a maximum depth of 40 feet.

May 30 - June 2, Baraboo Circus Model Builders Convention and Show 9 am–6 pm Circus model builders are men, women, boys and girls who love the circus, and share this love through the exhibition of small-scale circus models of their own creation. These folks hold a deep fascination for the circus and know the process of how historic circuses operated from the minute the first train or truck arrived until fading lights signal that the show had moved on to create wonderful memories in some other town. These circus models are often perfect miniature versions of an actual circus that traveled throughout America — right down to the last performer, roustabout, elephant, wagon or prop. Whatever the scale, you can be sure it is a true replica of the great institution known as the American circus. Several miniature circus creations will be on exhibit in the W.W. Deppe Wagon Pavilion for all to see. June 1, Baraboo Nash Metropolitan Show 9am–6 pm America’s first subcompact automobile, the Nash Metropolitan, were produced from 1954 to 1962. These diminutive cars have classic auto lines and detailing of a 1950s automobile, but in a Lilliputian-sized package. While most U.S. automobile makers were following a bigger-is-better philosophy, Nash Motor Company executives were offering American buyers an economical transportation alternative. The Metropolitan was designed in the U.S. as the second car in a two-car family; a personal car for mom to take the kids to school or for shopping and that dad could drive to the railroad station to catch his ride to work. This commuter/shopping car resembled the big Nash, but with a tiny wheelbase shorter than the Volkswagen Beetle. See several of these highly collectible and rare cars on display at Circus World. This barn quilt can be found at Gale and Nancy Getschman’s place, 1805 W. Pine St. (Cty Rd. BD), Baraboo. The pattern is the Wisconsin Star and was painted green and yellow honoring Gale’s John Deere tractor collection. Two years ago Nancy painted the smaller barn quilt and placed it on their garage. On their way to the Old Threshers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant, IA they admired the many barn quilts along the route and decided to paint one for their barn. Not knowing what to do they looked up directions on the internet. Next year they plan on making another one for the other side of the barn which can be observed from the new four lane Hwy. 12. Every year Gale and Nancy sponsor a Tractor Ride the second weekend in June. They chose this weekend because their first stop is the Sauk County Dairy Breakfast. At S40654 State Road 136, Reedsburg, WI you will find this barn quilt. Belonging to Brian & Dena Bender this quilt pattern is triple star. This was painted by the Reedsburg Middle School Art Class as a gift to Dena for her 14 years working at their school. She quit that job and went farming full-time with her husband, Brian in October 2011. The gift was given to her when they opened their farm to the public for the Sauk County Dairy Breakfast in June 2012.

Frey Barn Quilt These 4 small barn quilts are on the Women’s building at the Badger Steam and Gas Show located just off Hwy. 33 at S3347 Sand Rd., Baraboo. Earl Sprecher’s four daughters Jean, Judy, Janet and Joanne chose patterns and painted them for the building. They represent the following: #1 – Sunbonnet Sue - Jean Sprecher Brew chose this pattern as she collects Sunbonnet Sue quilts. #2 – Windmill - Judy Sprecher Wehler chose this pattern as she lives on the Sprecher family farm which has a windmill. #3 – Log Cabin - Janet SprecherBruski chose this pattern as she hopes to live in a log cabin some day. #4 – Schoolhouse - Joanne Sprecher Welty of Milwaukee, WI chose this pattern as she is the youngest in their family and is always a student of some sort.

Frey Barn Quilt installed a restored barn used to build performance engines—“it needs a bit of a woman’s touch in a man’s way” is what Jenny Frey said when she offered to sponsor a Sauk County barn quilt. Her woman’s touch was a barn quilt as she admires them on their way to tractor pulls which both she and her husband, Dennis, are involved in. They love the Allis Chalmers so that is where the colors of their barn quilt came from. She chose the “Hunter’s Star” quilt pat-

The lime stone is very popular in this area and you will notice other homes made this way. The block walls are 2 ft. thick and provide the natural insulation. As you travel down Hwy. T in the Fairfield Township past what used to be known as the Leopold Shack and Leopold Center you will come upon a beautifully painted, bright colored barn quilt on the Kevin and Barbara Jantz barn. Their farm is the first in that township with the first owner purchasing the land in 1847. Directly across the road from the barn you will see the original house where their parent’s reside today. (E12450 Cty Rd T). It is believed this barn was moved from Levee Rd in the mid 1920s to its present location. The pattern chosen by the Jantz family is known as the Ohio Star. Barbara said there is no real reason for it other than they liked the design for the colors they wanted to use. Over the winter months the family painted the quilt in their basement and had

The newest barn quilt in Sauk County was recently installed on the Mike and Rhonda Enge barn on their homestead located off Hwy. PF at S9106 Hager Road, Prairie du Sac. The quilt pattern chosen by Rhonda Enge is called the “Harvest Sun” and is very fitting for their family as they have 3 boys; Travis, Dusty and Dan, who all enjoy the large family dairy farm. The Enge operation has an extensive amount of crop land and it is truly the harvest sun that assists them with their success each year. The red, blue, white and yellow colors are visible from many miles around as you head East toward their farmette on Hwy. PF or South on Denzer Road (Gasser’s hill). Take a drive and enjoy the beautiful agricultural landscape as you look for this bright quilt on their white barn with their donkey

The barn quilt was constructed in honor of their son, BJ Chrisler, who served as the State FFA President in 2009-2010, State Vice President in 2008-2009 and the National FFA Officer “NOMCOM” Chairman in 2010. The FFA President’s symbol in the FFA emblem is “the Rising Sun’ which is depicted in their quilt. The border consists of blue corn kernels also from the FFA symbol.
