Juneau County, Wisconsin

was established in 1857 when the State of Wisconsin passed legislation separating lands west of the Wisconsin River from what was then Adams County. After a contest with neighboring New Lisbon, the county seat was established in Maugh's Town, which is known today as Mauston. The county was named after Solomon Juneau, a Milwaukee legislator who inﬂuenced the legislation establishing Juneau County. The county board of early Juneau County convened only once a year to conduct the business of the slow moving, remote county. Today, Juneau County retains the charm of the early days, while it moves forward into the future of electronic government.

First, some history is in order. Most of what is today’s Juneau County was carved out of the sandstone bedrock during the last North American Glacial Period some 18,000 years ago. For a long time, Juneau County was covered by the glacial Lake Wisconsin. The lake (up to 150’ deep) stretched over 1,800 sq. miles from Tomah to the west and up to Stevens Point in the

north. A huge natural dam formed by rock, earth and sand burst some 1 ,000 years ago. After three days it took to drain the lake, the runoff created a new course for the Wisconsin River, carved out the Wisconsin Dells and moved south toward Baraboo to create Devil’s Lake. The rocky outcroppings, called buttes or bluffs, you see throughout the central and northern part of the county are really the tops of islands that dotted the surface of glacial Lake Wisconsin. If you’re ambitious, climbing to the top of one of these ‘islands’ shows you the outline of the old lake. The low and sandy prairies you see are the old lakebed. Much of the southern part of the county escaped the destructive force of the last glacial period and is part of the “driftless” region of Wisconsin. Deep valleys, high ridges and quiet rural life make this area a special place to visit. Add to that the quiet joy of some of the nation’s finest bike trails, canoeing on the Lemonweir and Wisconsin River, golfing, horseback riding, hiking, snowmobiling, ATV riding, hunting, fishing, antiquing, waterskiing and camping, you’re in for a rare treat. Juneau County History! Our heritage adventure starts with a look backwards in time at the people and places of Juneau County. The ﬁrst known inhabitants of the area were the people of the Woodland Culture. Many artifacts are contained in the Harry Mortensen Collection housed in the New Lisbon Memorial Library and date from 500 to 1 00 A.D. These semi-nomadic people hunted, gathered and farmed this area after the draining of glacial Lake Wisconsin some 1 ,000 years ago. These early people raised corn, squash and beans and harvested wild blueberries, cranberries and other wild fruit for use during their winter camps. Others harvested wild rice, buffalo, deer, moose and other wild game. The rivers of Juneau County were the highways that allowed exploration. Rivers such as the Wisconsin, the Lemonweir, the Yellow and the Baraboo were used to harvest the abundant natural resources of the county and early settlements along those rivers included Mauston, New Lisbon, Necedah, Elroy and Wonewoc. After the period of early exploration, trading

posts and sawmills sprang up to harvest the abundant pine timber that covered the county. Unwise harvesting practices soon exhausted these resources and as the land was stripped, agriculture took hold. Crops of summer wheat, tobacco, corn, sphagnum moss, hops, grains and cranberries were harvested, sold and traded by early farmers who survived brutal winters and the backbreaking task of eking a living out of the land. Much of the land, especially in the northern part of the county, was unsuitable for agriculture and the sandy, light soil of the Lemonweir River Valley blew away during the spring. Add to this the difﬁculty and cost of getting good land from the many speculators who bought huge chunks of the available land at government auctions and sold it for proﬁt, and you begin to see the problems these early farmers faced. Even with these long odds, agriculture became the largest industry in the county and today still holds that position. The mix is different now than it was back then. Dairy, hogs

and sheep are more prevalent and corn, soybeans and wheat are the main crops. With the coming of the railroads in the mid-1800s, Juneau County’s geographical location midway between Chicago and Minneapolis made it an important part of rail history. The City of Elroy was on the main line of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway and Mauston, New Lisbon and Camp Douglas were regular stops on the old Milwaukee Road. The present Interstate system (I90-9 ) roughly parallels the Milwaukee Road as it cuts diagonally across the county. Necedah was served by the Chicago & Northwestern and served as an important rail point for access to northern and central Wisconsin. At one time, passenger service was available at many of these stops to connect Juneau County residents with the world. The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad beds around Elroy, Camp Douglas, Union Center and Wonewoc have been converted into bike trails including the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, the Omaha Trail and the ‘ 00’ Trail.

Bike Adventures

The many bike trails of Juneau County are just waiting for your visit. They all begin (or end) in Elroy WI, located on Hwys 80-8 in southwestern Juneau County. The ElroySparta State Bike Trail is the “Granddaddy of All Trails.“ It was the very ﬁrst Rails to Trails Conversion in the United States in 1965. The hard-packed limestone trail covers 3 miles of an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed and has no more than a 3 % grade at any point. The trail passes through three tunnels as it makes its way toward Sparta and we recommend ﬂashlights and jackets for tunnels. The Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail links with the La Crosse River Trail in Sparta. The ' 00' State Trail is often called the most scenic trail in the Wisconsin State Trail System. It's named for the Chicago & Northwestern passenger train that traveled the 00 miles from Chicago to Minneapolis in 00 minutes. The miles of smooth, hard-packed limestone parallels or crosses the Baraboo River the entire length between Elroy and Reedsburg. A recent addition to the trail links Hillsboro to the south. The Juneau County Omaha Bike Trail is 1 .5 miles of sealcoated trail owned and maintained by Juneau County and has a separate trail fee. It also follows an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed all the way to Camp Douglas and opened in the spring of 199 . The Omaha Trail is the most peaceful and secluded of our trails.

Elroy Commons

Bike Trails Elroy is the hub of the three major bike trails in Juneau County. The Omaha Trail is a 1 .5 mile trail from Elroy to Camp Douglas along the old Chicago & Northwestern railbed. The Elroy-Sparta Trail heads west and north to Sparta along 3 miles of hard-packed, limestone trail. The trail features three tunnels along its route. The ‘ 00’ Trail heads east out of Elroy following the Baraboo River to Reedsburg, some miles away. At Union Center, the ‘ 00’ Trail branches off as the Hillsboro State Trail. Elroy is located on Hwys 71, 80 & 8 in southwestern Juneau County. Information on the trails can be found by calling the Commons Trails Shop at 608- 6 - 10.

Wonewoc is located in southern Juneau County in a picturesque valley on State Highway 33, and has kayak/canoe access to the Baraboo River. Within the Village are three public parks. July 26-27, 2013 Fitzgerald Park Lyndon Station is in the Southeastern section of Juneau County on Highways 1 /16 and Interstate 90/9 near the beautiful Rocky Arbor State Park. The park, located near Lyndon Station on the Wisconsin River, has several access points for kayaking and canoeing. This fully restored 1896 log lodge features exhibits including uniforms, weapons and equipment, terrain maps and dioramas of famous battles. Cranberry Creek Archaeological District

Contained with the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, the site contains efﬁgy mounds of the Woodland Culture People dating from 499 B.C. to 1499 A.D. The Woodland Culture people were the ancestors of the Ho-Chunk. The site is on the National Register of Historical Places. Gee's Slough Efﬁgy Mounds

The Woodland Culture people, ancestors of the Ho-Chunk, lived throughout this area from 499 B.C. to around 1500 A.D. Indian Mounds Park, just south of New Lisbon

is the site of several effigy mounds including a rare flexlegged running panther. The park also includes a linear mound and several round or oval burial mounds that were used by the tribal nobility. The park is located on Indian Mound Road south of New Lisbon off Hwys 12 & 16 and is maintained by the New Lisbon Lions Club. The Effigy Mounds are listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

Harry A. Mortensen Collection

An impressive collection of artifacts from the Woodland Culture people, the collection represents the lifetime achievement of Harry A. Mortensen, a New Lisbon native. A portion of the collection can also be seen at Raabe's Pharmacy on Adams St. in New Lisbon. The Mortensen Collection is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Harry A. The Boorman House

This 1876 Victorian mansion was built by Benjamin C. Boorman, a native of England. In 1864, he bought the Mauston dam, mills and water rights from the estate of M. M. Maughs. After a ﬁre that destroyed the mills, he rebuilt a mill on the north side of the Lemonweir River to produce ﬂour and feed. Later he built a sawmill and a wool carding mill on the south side of the dam and began construction of the Boorman House in 1874. The home features a grand staircase, a drawing room and a widow's walk.

The Boorman House is now the home of the Juneau County Historical Society and showcases extensive collections of artifacts, records and research materials. Dr. McIntosh's medical ofﬁce building is also preserved at the site and a building housing agricultural implements, wagons and workshops was recently completed. The Boorman House is open on weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day and hosts a special Christmas Open House beginning around Thanksgiving. Sprague Bridge

This bridge spanning the Yellow River southeast of Finley WI in northern Juneau County has been listed on the National Register of Historical Places since 1995. Built in the early 1900s, the bridge is an excellent example of small bridge construction during that era.

Juneau County Courthouse

Originally built in 1925, the Juneau County Courthouse, with its marbled ﬂoors and richly paneled courtrooms, is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. It stands on a square in the center of Mauston, the county seat, and hosts many community activities including a farmers market during the summer. Juneau County Courthouse, 220 E. Mauston Dam Site

by M. M. Maughs. The lake formed behind the dam is Lake Decorah, named after a prominent Ho-Chunk family in the area. The mill was destroyed in a ﬁre in 1864 and later rebuilt in another location by Benjamin Boorman.

Buckley Bridge and Mill

Drive out of New Lisbon on Hwy M past Kennedy County Park and you'll cross the Lemonweir River over the Buckley Bridge. The mill was built in 1850 and only its rock foundations can be seen today.

Marian Shrine

Over 50 years ago, a local farm woman claimed to have a vision of the Virgin Mary at this site in Necedah. The followers of this group have built 14 grottoes to depict saints and events in the life of the Holy Family.

New Lisbon Civil War Memorial

A statue erected by the GAR in 1897 stands in Heritage Park on Adams St in New Lisbon. The statue and an authentic Civil War cannon honor the dead from the War Between the States. Also in the park is a restored horse trough that once sat at Adams and Bridge St. in the center of town.

The Elroy Historical Society Museum

This quaint museum in downtown Elroy steps into the city's past when it was a bustling railroad town. Photographs and memorabilia from that bygone era includes a working model railroad for the young at heart. The museum is open from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on weekends from May 1 to September 30.

Please purchase all firewood locally. Firewood can harbor many different kinds of invasive pests and diseases that are harmful to Wisconsin’s trees in both forest and urban settings. Gypsy moth, oak wilt, and emerald ash borer hitchhike on firewood, to name just a few, making their way easily into previously unaffected, healthy areas. This poses a serious threat to trees throughout the state. Although it is still legal to move firewood in certain areas, it is almost always a bad idea to do so. Moving firewood can put the trees at your destination at risk.

Elroy

Elroy is on the West fork of the Baraboo River in the heart of Wisconsin's 'driftless' area. The forested hills and valleys provide natural beauty and plenty of chances to spend some quality time with your family. Three bike trails, a theater, library and a museum are just a few of its attractive features. Elroy is best known as the birthplace and home of former Governor Tommy Thompson. The '400' State Trail, the Elroy-Sparta State Trail and the Juneau County Omaha Trail are the three bicycle trails that meet in Elroy. They are all built on discontinued rail lines that once served the area. They are also used as snowmobile trails in the winter. The Elroy-Sparta trail was the ﬁrst ofﬁcial 'Rails to Trails' bicycle trail in the nation. The Elroy-Sparta trail and the '400' trail join at the Elroy Commons, and the Omaha trail is connected by way of the new covered bridge.

Wonewoc

The most southern village in Juneau County, Wonewoc is a peaceful village located in an unglaciated area. It is enhanced by many rocky bluffs and pine trees. The countryside is truly unique and spectacular. The friendly atmosphere of the village is evident from the moment you come into town. The scenic village park offers many varied recreational activities for both adults and children.

Wonewoc is the midpoint of the 400 State Trail. (The 400 State Trail is one of Wisconsin's newest recreational trails.) It boasts good schools, churches, clubs, organizations, and a library which offers the latest in books, records, tapes, etc. The local government has done a great job in making this a village to be proud of.

Union Center

Union Center is a quiet little village tucked among pine forests and natural sandstone bluffs in the southeast corner of Juneau County. Union Center is on the 400 State Trail, a four-season, recreational trail built on an abandoned railroad bed. Union Center's casual, rural setting is perfect for getting close to nature but there are plenty of activities for those who like to keep busy. Picnicking, playing basketball in the park, canoeing on the scenic Baraboo River or playing a round of golf on a challenging 9-hole course are just some of the ways to have some fun.

Juneau County Parks Juneau County offers a wealth of outdoor recreational areas administered by federal, state, county, and local agencies. In fact, we have a total of 68 parks - about 75,000 acres in all. Half the county is forested. With our waysides, recreational trails, and 57 lakes and public boat accesses, it's easy to see why our 'backyard' is a recreational paradise. Castle Rock Park has over 300 campsites on 160 acres. It is located on Highway G about seven miles from Mauston, Wisconsin, on Beautiful Castle Rock Lake which covers 16,000 acres. Amenities at the park include spots for tents, trailers and RV's, showers, flush toilets, water, playgrounds, picnic tables, swimming (supervised beach), a park officer, boating and boat access, fishing, water skiing, canoeing, grills, shelter, electricity, and concessions.

Electricity, toilets, boating, swimming, fishing, playground, picnic tables, concessions, grills, firewood, water, group camping, shelter, scenic trails, boat ramp, water skiing, and showers are available. Wilderness Park is in Armenia Township and the address of the park is; 3650 21st Avenue, Necedah, WI 54646. Camping reservation for Wilderness park can be made at 608-847-9389 or 608-565-7285. Kennedy Park, on the shores of the Lemonweir River, is situated within a 200 acre parcel of County Forest. The park is located 3 miles north of New Lisbon on County Road M, and offers rustic camping with selfregistration. There are 12 camping sites that are on a first come basis. The shelter can be reserved for $25 by calling the Parks office at 608-847-9389. There is a boat landing for smaller boats and canoes, as well as playground equipment. Kennedy Park is also home to the Wisconsin Bow Hunters Annual Bowshoot every September, which includes lots of demonstrations, food, vendors, and much more! Call 608-562-3555 or 608-562-5213 for more information on the Bowshoot. Buckhorn State Park includes a 4,500-acre park and wildlife area along the Castle Rock Flowage and Yellow River. Most of the 43 walk-in sites are along the Castle Rock Flowage and are accessible using available carts or by boat. There are eleven family/drive-in sites and three group campsites, picnic and swimming areas, two picnic shelters with electric that are available for rentals, amphitheater, hiking and cross country ski trails, boat launches, canoe/kayak rentals, self guided canoe nature trail, accessible fishing pier and waterfowl hunting blinds, a two-story accessible wildlife blind, and an accessible cabin for people with disabilities. Winter Hours at Necedah National Wildlife Refuge

Necedah National Wildlife Refuge offers a variety of activies each season. Refuge lands are open sunrise to sunset 365 days a year. Visitor Center operation will change to the winter hours starting October 22nd and will be open Monday through Saturday from 7:30am to 4:00 pm. The refuge landscape is beautiful in winter. Refuge staff members invite visitors to check out snowshoes and discovery backpacks for day use on the refuge. Checkout items are free of charge

Step into the beauty of Central Wisconsin and immerse yourself in a mosaic of habitats on 44,000 acres. Savanna, prairie, wetland, and forest all intertwine across the refuge’s landscape. A great place to start is the refuge’s new visitor center and boardwalks. They serve as a gateway to your refuge experience. Take in the sights and sounds of the refuge in the exhibit hall or visit with friendly staff to find the right hiking or driving experience for you. The refuge hosts over 230 bird species, including red-headed woodpeckers, whooping cranes, wood ducks, and eagles. Visitors also have a chance at seeing bears, deer, porcupines, otter, turtles, wolves and many more wildlife species. Although the “Great Swamp”, may be known for its biting insects, don’t dismiss our dragonflies and butterflies. One of the most sought after insects by photographers includes the endangered Karner blue butterfly. The refuge is open year round from sunrise to sunset for wildlife observation, photography, hiking, fishing, hunting, and much more! The visitor center is open seven days a week spring through fall from 7:30am - 4:00pm and open Mondays-Saturdays during the winter. Rivers & Lakes The Lakes

The Lakes region of Juneau and Adams counties has something for everyone. Both Castle Rock and Petenwell Lakes are created by power dams on the Wisconsin River. The river forms the eastern boundary of the county. Castle Rock Lake is the fourth largest inland lake in Wisconsin and offers plenty of ﬁshing, camping and boating. Buckhorn State Park, Castle Rock Park and Germantown Park offers visitors plenty of space to picnic and enjoy the view. Many campsites and resorts surround the lake and boat launches are plentiful. Whether your thing is jet skiing or sailing, there's plenty of big water for you to enjoy for a day, a week or a lifetime.

The 4 Rivers of Juneau County By Ray Feldman Juneau County offers paddlers a wide variety of rivers from the small “creek type” of the Baraboo River between Union Center and Wonewoc to the largest river totally contained within the state: the Wisconsin River. The Lemonweir and Yellow Rivers provide two different types of medium sized rivers. All four rivers are free from falls and rapids although other hazards such as log jams and beaver felled trees may provide some obstacles to maneuver through, over or around by portaging. The Baraboo is the westernmost while the Lemonweir and Yellow occupy the central and the Wisconsin makes up the “East Coast” of the county since the Wisconsin runs the whole length of the eastern boundary. Moreover, the eastern county boundary is part of the 2nd and 4th largest lakes in the state: The Petenwell and Castle Rock Flowages respectively. Petenwell Lake is the second largest inland lake in Wisconsin, and is well known for its great fishing. Walleyes, northern pike, muskies and pan fish are plentiful and there's plenty of public boat launches available. The lake is 23,000+ acres over a 36 sq. mile area. It was created in 1948 by damming the Wisconsin River near Necedah. Its maximum depth is over 40' and is wellknown for its excellent fishing and waterfowling. American eagles winter at the dam and can be observed daily during the season. Camping at Wilderness Park on Petenwell Lake ranges from full hookup to primitive and the scenery is great.

Yellow River The Yellow River is best paddled from below the Necedah Dam down to the Buckhorn State Park Wildlife area at the upper end of Castle Rock Flowage. Put in is either at the south end of the village near the railroad trestle from Hwy 80 via Ninth Street easterly to the river or by taking Hwy 21 easterly to the other side (east) of the river and then doubling back to just below the dam to the put in. Downstream from the dam, the overhead wires supported by two vertical poles are in Necedah. After this the trip downstream goes through the typical river bottom lowlands with lots of sloughs, potholes and meanders. The trip from Necedah to Crappie Point boat landing on Castle Rock Lake takes about 4-5 hours and is for intermediate to experienced canoers/ kayakers. There are no falls or rapids but the swift currents and numerous deadfalls in the river can make for tricky paddling. Winding through

the obstacle course of the many trees fallen into the river can be fun for experienced paddlers, and very tricky where there are swift currents. Logjams may require portages. The forested setting feels remote and wild with lots of wildlife and many bird species. The single vertical pole overhead wires are about half way to Crappie Point. Shortly after, the river splits. Take the left channel (river left). Bald Eagles are often seen in this area. You are now entering the Yellow River Wildlife area where the river slows down as the ﬂowage waters are backed up from Castle Rock Lake. When you see the Buckhorn Bridge paddle to the west shore (river right) to get to Crappie Point boat landing where a State Park Permit fee and sticker are required. Baraboo River As the Baraboo River ﬂows through Juneau County, it is ﬁrst accessible for a downstream venture in the Village of Union Center. The river is 10 to 20 feet wide and offers a comfortable 3 hour ride to Wonewoc that is free of rapids and falls. Paddlers put-in on the north side of Highway 33, adjacent to the Spring Valley Golf Course. The river follows a snake-like scenic path through the “driftless area” of Juneau County. As you travel downstream, the river goes through the typical river bottom lowlands, with lots of meanders and sloughs off to the side. Wildlife is very abundant with deer, beaver, raccoon, sand hill cranes, Canada geese and other assorted birds and animals. Along the way, the Baraboo River passes through a mostly low-canopied, wooded setting that feels remote and wild and may, at times, require maneuvering or portaging around fallen trees caused by the beavers in the area. Approximately halfway between Union Center and Wonewoc, you will paddle next to a huge rock formation known as the Third Castle, a sheer 150-foot sandstone cliff. This region is also known in Indian lore to have been habitat for the Winnebago Indians. On the bank opposite the Third Castle is a picnic area where you can stop and relax and enjoy the peaceful, scenic setting.

As you continue toward Wonewoc, the State 400 Bike Trail crosses the river at two points. After winding past the edge of the village, the river passes in quick succession under the County Highway FF and the Washington Street bridges. “The Lost District” is a new park in this area. It has a concrete landing for canoes and kayaks, a covered picnic shelter, and other facilities. Eats and treats are available at several locations in downtown Wonewoc, which is within a short walking distance from this landing

The Baraboo River has a rich history that included at least eleven dams built along various places on the river within its 120+ mile length. However, all dams have been removed from the main branch so the Baraboo River has the distinction of being the “longest free ﬂowing (undammed) river in the nation.” Canoe/ kayak rentals and shuttle services are available locally in the Village of Wonewoc through Beyond Boundaries at 608-464-7433. Lemonweir River Where the Lemonweir enters Juneau County crossing Hwy H about 5 miles north of Camp Douglas deadfalls in the river are a constant source of obstacles. Paddling these headwaters is suitable only for the athletic, fit, adventurous boaters because of the work involved dodging, going through or portaging trees in the river. Take out is at the Lone Rock Bridge on 6th Avenue. Traveling further downriver is also possible but only for the hardy because of tree tops, branches and obstructions in the river until the Hwy M Bridge which is about 3 miles north of New Lisbon. The next portion of the Lemonweir River from the Highway M bridge to Juneau County’s Kennedy Park (also reached from Hwy M) takes about 2 to 3 hours and is a relatively easy paddle in open waterways. This stretch of river is suitable for all levels of paddlers including family groups. The area here is also rich in wildlife including deer, muskrat, beaver and many birds including ducks, Sandhill Cranes and song birds. Fishing for Bass, Northern, and pan fish is seasonally good. A couple of miles below the Highway M Bridge you will note a tall bluff on river right with a rock face or “dells”. Further downstream there is a take-out landing at Kennedy Park which is also available for camping with hand pump water supply and outhouses. Another good trip is from Kennedy Park downstream to the Riverside Park at the flowage at New Lisbon which usually takes about 2 hours to complete. There are quite a few dead trees in the water that can cause problems. This part of the route is totally wooded and isolated giving a sense of “getting away from it all”. Just before the lake at New Lisbon the river crosses under the I 90-94 Bridge. Riverside Park is located

river left above the dam. This park was remodeled in 2009 to add new indoor toilets and coin operated warm showers. Some of the camp sites have electric hook-up facilities available. Fishing can be quite good both on the impoundment and just below the dam. The trip going down the Lemonweir River below the dam at New Lisbon to Mauston is a good six or seven hour paddle. If you do any fishing, sightseeing, exploring the various sloughs or looking at wildlife you may use up the whole day. Fishing is good along the route. When you get to the big bluff overlooking the river you are at the headwaters of Mauston’s Lake Decorah. A short half hour later you arrive at the first boat landing off of highway 12-16 at the upstream portion of Lake Decorah. Paddlers will need to follow the channels through the reeds and wild rice beds to navigate downstream through Lake Decorah. Further downstream near the center of the city you will come alongside Riverside Park which has a boat landing. covered picnic shelter with tables at the west end and indoor flush toilets available at the east end of the park. After you portage the Mauston dam river left over a low concrete wall, it is a pleasant three to three and half hour paddle down to 19th Street or Lemonweir Mills. below the Mauston Dam the river passes under the I 90-94 bridge. Another few hundred yards, straight ahead high in a huge pine is an extremely large Eagle’s nest which is occupied by an Eagle family. Downstream, at the 19th street bridge Lemonweir Mills is the location of an old dam site that was utilized for grain grinding in the 1800’s and later converted to a small hydroelectric plant which has now been removed. There are no facilities at this location but it is a good boat landing and picnic area. Fishing is very popular around the 19th street bridge at Lemonweir Mills. From 19th Street, Lemonweir Mills downstream to the Two Rivers Boat Landing near the junction of the Wisconsin River is a long day’s journey. Oftentimes there will be trees across the river that must be portaged or worked around. There is a lot of wildlife along this area especially proliﬁc bird life with some Eagles and Sandhill

Cranes along the way. Many sloughs and ox bows are found on the sides of the river. Take-out is available at the Two Rivers Boat Landing river right upstream of the junction with the Wisconsin River. The Juneau County’s Two River boat landing is reached via Hwy 82 east of Mauston, south on Hwy HH then east on 56th Street, continuing northeast on Cliff House Road and down to the river via Wisconsin Trail. There is a high rocky shoreline river right which is also the start of “The Dells”. It is possible to travel to the junction with the Wisconsin River downstream to River Bay Marina at the head of the Wisconsin Dells Flowage.

Wisconsin River Since the Wisconsin River starts at the Michigan border a couple of hundred river miles upstream from Juneau County and is fed by dozens of smaller streams and rivers the Wisconsin River is “Big Water” by the time it gets to northernmost Juneau County. It can become quite powerful and dangerous when high. The first boat landing upstream in Juneau County is located in the town of Armenia of the eastern end of 4th Street accessed from County Highway G north of Necedah. This section of river already is part of the Petenwell Flowage which is the 2nd largest lakes in Wisconsin. Because of the wide open expanses of the Petenwell Flowage, winds can cause big waves to build up very quickly. Paddlers should exercise caution wearing their PFDs and staying close to the western shore (down river right) when paddling the Petenwell. A short way downstream on the Petenwell Flowage is located Juneau County’s Wilderness Park (for more information call 608565-7285 (Mid May – September) or 608-847-9389 (October – Mid May) at the east end of 9th street accessed from County Rd. G, North of Necedah. This is a modern park with facilities including coin operated showers, flush toilets, 120 campsites and a concrete paved boat launching area. Another boat launch area is located at the eastern end of 10th street which is a public landing located on Petenwell Flowage reached off County Trunk G north of Necedah. Further downstream below the Petenwell Dam east of Necedah on the eastern side of the Highway 21 Bridge over the Wisconsin River in Adams County is a public boat landing with outhouse facilities and hand pump well water. This is a well developed boat launching area and large power boats put in here to go up stream to the Petenwell dam for fishing and cruise further downstream into Castle Rock Lake. Further downstream is the county owned Osprey

Boat Landing on the north end of Castle Rock Flowage which is accessed from County Highway G south of Highway 21 and north of Mauston via State Highway 58. Continuing downstream, the public May’s Point landing on Castle Rock Flowage is accessed on the east end of 29th Street off of Highway G north of the Buckhorn State Park which is reached by traveling north of Mauston via State Highway 58. Several canoe and power boat landings are also available in the Buckhorn State Park which is reached by Highway 58 north of Mauston and east on County Highway G. Juneau County also has a modern large County Park known as Castle Rock north of Mauston on Highway G and on the shores of Castle Rock Flowage with concrete boat ramps, flush toilets, coin operated hot showers with 250 campsites. Between the Castle Rock Dam and the Dells you will encounter a calm free flowing stretch of the Wisconsin River. In this quiet stretch above the bustling Dells, you will find great fishing holes and shorelines abundant with wildlife. No speed boats here. This is where you come to enjoy nature. A short distance downriver from the dam you will find Castle Rock Resort. Located on the western shore of the Wisconsin River, this resort boasts the actual Castle Rock on its property and has camping facilities, hot showers, laundry facilities, seasonal sites, a boat launch and a bar. It is a great midway stopping point between the Castle Rock Dam and the Dells. It is open mid April through mid November. River accessed from Highway N at the end of 60th Street which requests a donation for use. Louis Bluff is the large highland just upstream of River Bay Marina. The Bluff was named after the Frenchman Louis Dopless who settled here in 1846. The high wooded prominence is fronted by beautiful cliffs along the river. Traveling further downriver from the RiverBay Marina on the Wisconsin River paddlers experience the extremes of a lakewidening of the river and a long narrow rocky gorge. Downstream from River Bay on the right are the Palisades, towering rock formations eroded by wind and water. They signal the beginning of the Upper Dells. In this section of the Upper Dells the Wisconsin River can be extremely dangerous at high water and should never be paddled by inexperienced boaters at any water level. Big tour boats and other motorized craft oftentimes create hazardous wakes in the last four miles of this section. In “The Jaws” the river is 120 feet deep! Because that during the height of the tourism season thousands of people view this part of the Dells from large motor launches and other fast boats, for most people the best way to see the Dells is from a tour boat obtained in Wisconsin Dells. For experienced paddlers a good time to try this route is at dawn well before the tour boats get started. For skilled paddlers, the trip through the Upper Dells is quite a remarkable experience. Quite a bit of the land along both sides of the river is owned by the Department of Natural Resources so that the rugged grandeur of the Dells has been preserved in a natural state. Natural wonders in this river portion include Witches Glen, Steamboat Rock, Cold Water Canyon, The Giant’s Shield (at waterline), The Devil’s Elbow, Blackhawk’s Proﬁle, and Chimney Rock. One option could be to put in at the pull off alongside County N near the head
