Back in the 1950s when orcharding was the mainstay for many Orange district residents, apple, pear and stone fruit crops brought in a substantial revenue to the city. Wangarrie sawmill in Sharpes Road was flatout in 1958 manufacturing fruit cases for the huge apple and pear crops that year. About 1000 cases a day were produced at the Orange mill and another 400 a day at the company’s Hampton mill near Jenolan. The photo shows case-maker Les Bowhay of McLachlan Street.
