PRESIDENT BARBARA R. SNYDER Barbara R. Snyder became president of Case Western Reserve University on July 1, 2007. A professor who began her academic career as a faculty member at our School of Law, she returned to campus committed to increasing academic excellence, enhancing faculty collaboration, and improving alumni engagement. Eight years later, the university is experiencing unprecedented success in each of these areas. Graduates and other supporters have dramatically increased donations and pledges each year; in 2010-2011, their $126.2 million commitments set an all-time record for the university. In addition, the overall number of donors has climbed steadily, while the size of the average gift grew by 80 percent since 2007. This progress enabled the university to launch Forward Thinking, the university’s $1 billion capital campaign, with more than 60 percent of the goal raised during the quiet phase. As President Snyder worked to establish strong relationships with alumni and other external stakeholders, she and her leadership team also worked closely with faculty on the university’s academic direction. By the end of President Snyder’s initial year, the university had adopted its first strategic plan in nearly two decades. The document emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary initiatives, among them energy, advanced materials, and human health. It also urged increased attention to internationalization and diversity; within seven months of the plan’s adoption, the university had created and filled new leadership positions in each area. Undergraduate applications to Case Western Reserve have doubled since she arrived, to a total of 14,700 in 2012. Meanwhile, selectivity has grown by more than a third, and academic credentials have climbed dramatically. In 2011, The Huffington Post named Case Western Reserve among the nation’s nine “trendiest colleges,” a list that also included Columbia and Yale universities.

That same year The Washington Monthly placed Case Western Reserve seventh on its list of universities that contribute to the common good. Finally, in 2011 U.S. News & World Report ranked the university 38 th – up four places from where it stood when President Snyder arrived. Looking ahead, Case Western Reserve continues to seek ways to build upon its strengths. The president and university leaders also are committed to a community culture that nurtures the inherent possibility of all of its members – one that is welcoming, inclusive, and committed to transparency. Snyder assumed the Case Western Reserve presidency after serving as Executive Vice President and Provost of The Ohio State University. Prior to becoming Provost, Snyder served as Vice Provost for Academic Policy and Human Resources and filled in as the university’s Interim Vice President for University Relations. As a professor at OSU’s Moritz College of Law, she also served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and as Director of the Center for Socio-Legal Studies. In 1997, the school’s third-year students voted to give Snyder the College of Law Outstanding Professor Award. She held the Joanne W. Murphy / Classes of 1965 and 1973 Professorship. Snyder joined OSU’s Moritz College of Law in 1988, after spending five years as a professor at Case Western Reserve’s School of Law. She joined Case Western Reserve after serving as an associate at the Sidley & Austin law firm in Chicago. She graduated from the University of Chicago Law School, where she served as executive editor of its law review, and earned her bachelor’s degree from Ohio State.

V.P. FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS LOU STARK Lou Stark has served as the Vice President for Student Affairs at Case Western Reserve since July of 2013.

He received an M.S. in Education in Counseling from Hofstra University, a B.S. in Psychology from Davis and Elkins College (W. Va.) and did additional graduate work in higher education administration. He received a certificate in management from the A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane.

Prior to arriving at CWRU, he served as the Vice President for Student Affairs at Coe College (Iowa) for 16 years. Stark also served as the Vice President for Student Life at Central College (Iowa), and prior to that, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at Tulane University (La.) and Associate Dean at Washington University in St. Louis. He has also held a variety of other student affairs positions.

Stark is a past President and a former Board member of the Iowa Student Personnel Association and has served on numerous other boards. Most recently, he served on the NCAA Division III Management Council. Previously, he has served on the President’s Council/Management Council Joint Legislative Steering Committee, the Strategic Planning and Finance Committee, and the ConventionPlanning Subcommittee.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS AMY BACKUS Named to her post on April 18, 2014, Amy Backus enters her second year as Director of Athletics and Chair of Physical Education at Case Western Reserve. Formerly the senior associate athletic director at Yale University, Backus brings the Spartans a quarter century of experience as a basketball coach along with a decade of work in athletics administration. A former basketball standout at nearby Vermilion High School, Backus began her professional career at her college alma mater, Central Michigan University. After graduation, Backus spent a year as a CMU assistant coach before claiming her first head coach position at then Otterbein College (now Otterbein University). She went on to secure similar positions at Middlebury College and Northwestern University before arriving at 6

Yale in 1999. Prior to arriving in Connecticut, she earned a master’s degree in administration and supervision with an emphasis on higher education from Loyola University of Chicago. While at Yale, she also served as national chair of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Rules Committee and as a member of both the NCAA Division I Academic Performance Advisory Group and its Legislative Council. Within Yale University, meanwhile, she was a member of the Intercultural Affairs Council, Committee on Sexual Misconduct, Alcohol Policy Committee, and Safety Net Committee—the last one a group of staff and student leaders dedicated to supporting health and safety on campus. Backus is also a member of the NCAA’s Gender Equity Task Force, a group of 11 commissioners, college presidents and athletics directors, the goal of which is to move the needle on gender equity in college sports.

DISANTO FIELD HOME OF THE SPARTANS

The 2015 season will mark the 11th year that the Case Western Reserve University football team has called DiSanto Field home. The 2,400-seat, state-of-the-art stadium and surrounding residence hall complex opened in August of 2005 as Case Field and was renamed in October of 2013 as DiSanto Field. The facility boasts many distinguishing features, such as its spacious locker rooms, updated press box, field surface and surrounding track. The entire complex was built at a total cost of $126 million. ”As a coach and recruiter, you want to be able to show prospects a facility that they would be proud to call home during their collegiate career,” said Head Coach Greg Debeljak. ”The players and parents who visit our complex walk away with that feeling and more.” After playing over 35 years of football at Finnigan Field, the Spartans played their last game at the multi-sport complex on November 8, 2003. Finnigan Field had played host to many successful teams, including the 1984 Spartan football squad, which was the first in university history to finish the season undefeated. The field also was used as a practice facility for the Cleveland Browns from 1965 to 1972.

During the 2004 season, the Spartans played their home games at Brush High School’s Korb Field while construction on their new home was completed. Play opened at the new facility for the Case Western Reserve football squad in front of 2,300 fans on September 10, 2005 versus Denison University. The Spartans did not disappoint on that day, defeating the Big Red, 20-6. The setting in which DiSanto Field was built is arguably one of the best in all of college athletics. The gridiron is surrounded by seven residence halls known as the Village at 115. These student dormitories, built in a horseshoe shape around the field, house around 800 undergraduate students, giving the facility a unique and intimate feel. ”Our attendance has more than doubled since the facility was opened,” explained Debeljak. ”A very spirited atmosphere has created a home field advantage that is second to none in Division III.” The stadium also boasts a modern and spacious press box. The area contains booths designated for both home and away broadcasts as well as a large work room for members of the media and school representatives. The coaches’ areas within the box are especially spacious and seat six coaches comfortably. Also included is

DISANTO FIELD FACTS

Currently, locker rooms are located adjacent to the field in the lower level of house seven of the dormitory complex along with a training room facility, named after Dr. Tom McLaughlin in 2007, which includes both full-size warm and cold whirlpools. In the fall of 2014 the university opened the Wyant Athletic & Wellness Center. The facility was made possible by the $4 million commitment of 1965 Case Institute of Technology alumnus, James C. Wyant, PhD. A former captain of the CIT Roughriders’ cross country team, Wyant’s gift was influenced by the role of athletics during his college years.

As part of the North Campus Residential Village and Athletic Complex, the threelevel facility includes the 4,500-square foot Belichick Weight Room – gifted by New England Patriot Head Coach Bill Belichick in honor of his father, Steve, a 1941 graduate of Western Reserve University; a 4,200-square foot cardio workout facility; and a 2,500-square foot Varsity Club with a balcony overlooking the football field and track. Future plans call for the addition of a large multipurpose space with synthetic flooring, as well as an additional wing with locker rooms, coaches’ offices, meeting rooms and a training/medical facility.

The field itself is a multifunctional field with a FieldTurf surface surrounded by the eight-lane Coach Bill Sudeck Track, named after the legendary cross country, track and basketball coach in 2008. The field was built in a European box style, which provides the appropriate dimensions for soccer contests. Along with hosting varsity football, soccer and track events, the field is used for intramural activities, special events and for the general recreation of the campus community.

HEAD COACH GREG DEBELJAK

12th Season • John Carroll ’88 • Record: 75-38 (.664) Greg Debeljak enters his 12th year as the head football coach at CWRU. In his 11 seasons, he has compiled an overall record of 75-38 (.664) and led the Spartans to an unbelievable 38-game regular season winning streak from 2006-10. Debeljak was named head coach at CWRU on March 24, 2004 after serving for 15 years as an assistant coach in the local college ranks. Debeljak led the Spartans to threeconsecutive undefeated (10-0) regular seasons, NCAA Playoff appearances and University Athletic Association titles from 2007-09. And since 2007, Case Western Reserve has posted an overall record of 52-21, earning Debeljak and his assistants the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year award for three straight seasons from 2007-09 and once again in 2011. The Spartan staff has received that honor five times in the past 11 years.

One Academic All-America® honors while three have been named a semifinalist for the Draddy Trophy (commonly referred to as the Academic Heisman). A graduate of nearby Mentor High School, Debeljak served as the Spartans’ associate head coach/offensive coordinator for three seasons before being named head coach. Highlighting his three years as the offensive coordinator, Case Western Reserve ranked first in all of NCAA Division III in passing offense and second in total offense in 2002. Prior to coming to Case Western Reserve, Debeljak spent 12 years as an assistant (1988-00) at his alma mater, John Carroll University. At JCU, he was a graduate assistant during his first two seasons, before working eight years as the quarterbacks and receivers coach. Before his final season at John Carroll, he was promoted to offensive coordinator. Debeljak was a member of the staff that

THE COACH “DEBS” PHILOSOPHY Greg Debeljak has a three-part philosophy on how to win both on and off the field, and when it all comes together the Spartan leader feels it positions his team for ultimate success. ”You are going to have various levels of success with wins and losses, but I think it’s important to experience other things,” he explained. ”When we have recruiting weekends and we meet as a group, this is one of the first things I bring up.” • The first goal is to become a family through team-building activities. ” We want our kids to come together as a team and a family, but it’s difficult,” Debeljak explained. ” Each year brings different players with different personalities – that’s why it is our number one goal. We can’t accomplish anything else until we merge together as a family. The relationships an incoming freshman had with his high school teammates most likely began in elementary school – they grew up with each other. The biggest hurdle is to get (freshmen) to believe in their new family in a shortened period of time.” • The second is the commitment to excellence in both athletics and academics without sacrificing one for the other. ” In regards to academics and athletics, we feel that even though we are one of the better academic institutions in the country, we still want to be competitive on a national level athletically. Simply said, they should both fit together.” The Spartans annually rank amongst the nation’s leaders in team GPA and have boasted one of the top combined winning percentages of any Division III program in the country since 2007. • Third, student-athletes give something back through community involvement and service. One of his first initiatives in this area was making the players a household name with incoming freshmen by helping them move into their dorm rooms, a recurring event every August. And last year, the Spartan gridironers taught football skills to hundreds of inner city elementary students during a university-wide volunteer effort. ” I think it is important to get out there and make your name known to the CWRU Community and to classmates,” Debeljak said. ” The Case For Community Day Sports Clinic event is a lot of fun, and our kids learn as much from the campers as they did from them.”

MARCUS MACALLA

Special Teams Coordinator/Running Backs Marcus Macalla enters his 15th season at Case Western Reserve. Amongst his many accomplishments over the past several seasons, Macalla’s defensive unit produced back-toback University Athletic Association Defensive Players of the Year with a combined three D3Football.com All-North Region selections in 2011 and 2012.

Prior to joining the staff at CWRU, he served as Kenyon College’s defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator in 2000. Before Kenyon, Macalla was at Hamline University (1999-2000) in Minnesota where he coached wide receivers in addition to serving on the staff for track & field. He served as an assistant coach at John Carroll University from 1996-98, also obtaining a master’s degree in education. While at JCU, he worked with defensive ends, linebackers and

In 2011, Macalla guided the Spartan defense to one of the best performances in program history. The unit ranked seventh in the nation in rush defense (75.8 ypg), 12th in scoring defense (12.9 ppg) and fourth in red zone efficiency (52%). Two seasons earlier in 2009, Macalla was recognized by the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the National Football Foundation as its Assistant Coach of the Year as the Spartans earned a third straight undefeated regular season, UAA Championship and NCAA Playoff berth. Macalla joined the staff in 2001 as a defensive line and special teams coach. He was named assistant head coach in 2004 and defensive coordinator in 2005.

DERECK SLESH

Offensive Coordinator

The 2015 season will mark Dereck Slesh’s 12 th as the offensive coordinator and 16th overall at CWRU. Slesh joined the staff in 2001 and spent his first three seasons as the defensive coordinator. In January of 2009, he was given the additional responsibility as the program’s recruiting coordinator. During his time at CWRU, Slesh has guided some of the nation’s top offensive units, including a 2009 squad that ranked fifth in the nation in scoring (42.4 ppg) and seventh in yardage (470.8 ypg). Slesh also produced a three-time (2007-09) UAA Offensive Player of the Year and 2009 AFCA All-American in quarterback Dan Whalen. Prior to his arrival at Case Western Reserve, Slesh spent three seasons (1996-97, 2000) on the staff at John Carroll University. He also served in the local high school ranks as head coach at Benedictine High School from 1998-99 and as a member of the staff at Beachwood High School from 1990-95. In 1988, Slesh began his coaching career at his high school alma mater, Hawken School. Slesh was a football and baseball studentathlete at Marietta College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business management in 1988. He also earned a Master of Business Administration from Cleveland State University in 1996.

WARREN MILLER

Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Warren Miller enter s his third season at CWRU and first as defensive c o o r dina t o r/ linebackers coach in 2015. Miller’s first two seasons with the program were spent as special teams coordinator/linebackers coach, and in 2013 his unit produced the UAA Special Teams Player of the Year. Before joining the staff in University Circle, Miller spent five seasons as linebackers coach at NCAA Division II Walsh University. He also served as an athletic academic advisor from 2010-12 as well as Director of Compliance and Eligibility from 2007-10. Prior to his time in North Canton, Miller served for three seasons (2005-07) in a defensive quality control position at the University of Minnesota. During his time on the staff, the Gophers appeared in a pair of bowl games. Miller also served as a graduate assistant and tight ends coach at Walsh from 2003-05 as well as a student assistant for offensive lineman and tight ends at his alma mater, Baldwin Wallace University, from 2001-03. Miller graduated from BW with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration.

MICKEY ILIANO Offensive Line

RODRIK DAVID Mickey Iliano will return as the offensive line coach for the 2014 football season. Iliano has coached alongside Debeljak since 19 9 4, including the 200111 seasons at Case Western Reserve.

Prior to arriving in University Circle, Iliano was an assistant at John Carroll University (1994-2000), University School (1990-93) and Beachwood High School (1981-89). He is a 1975 graduate of Collinwood High School and a 1980 graduate of the University of Dubuque (Iowa). At Dubuque, Iliano captained both the football and baseball teams, and the football team reached the NCAA Division III Playoffs his senior year. During his time at Case Western Reserve, Iliano has coached a multitude of All-UAA selections and has been a member of the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year five times. He also guided the offensive line during the program’s 38-game regular season win streak from 2007-10 and three consecutive NCAA Playoff appearances (2007-09).

Rodrik David enters

his second season on the Spartan coaching staff following one-year internships with The Ohio State University and the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. David was a four-year letterwinner (2006-09) and senior captain at Nebraska Wesleyan University. In 2011, he joined Ohio State’s Department of Recreational Sports as a graduate assistant. David added a defensive line coaching internship to his resume in January of 2013, and he served in that role until departing for a pro personnel internship with the Titans in July of 2013. David earned a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management from NWU in 2010 as well as a Master of Arts in sport management from OSU in 2013.

STEVE BIGACH Defensive Line

JOHN PONT Steve Bigach, a former Capital One Academic AllDistrict honoree at the University of Iowa, enters his second season on the Spartan coaching staff.

A native of Cleveland and product of St. Ignatius High School, Bigach lettered twice on the defensive line for Iowa and started all 12 games of the 2012 campaign. He was a twotime Academic All-District selection and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten performer as an integrative physiology major. Bigach lettered in football, basketball, track & field and lacrosse at St. Ignatius. On the gridiron, he was tabbed as the Cuyahoga County Defensive Player of the Year in 2007.

BRYAN MASSINEN Defensive Line

Bryan Massinen has joined the Case Western Reserve coaching staff as the defensive line coach for the 2015 season.

Massinen comes to the Spartans after working as the defensive backs coach at St. Edward High School, where he helped the team win the 2014 Division 1 State Championship. He has also worked as the Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Midwest Pelicans baseball team, and an assistant coach at St. Ignatius High School and Baldwin-Wallace College. Massinen received his Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from Baldwin-Wallace and his Master’s in Exercise Science from Cleveland State University.

Receiver Coach

John Pont joined the CWRU coaching staff in 2015, bringing with him a wealth of D-I experience.

Pont most recently worked as a receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Akron since 2012. He previous had worked as an assistant at Miami (Ohio), Colorado State, North Texas, North Alabama, and Florida State. Pont received his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Miami University (Ohio). He earned his Master’s in Sports Administration from Florida State University.

JESSICA WHITE Athletic Trainer

Jessica White was named the Head Athletic Trainer at Case Western Reserve University in the fall of 2014, after serving on the sports medicine staff since 2010.

White earned her Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training/clinic management from Bowling Green State University in 2007. She later earned a Master of Arts and Education with a sport science emphasis from Defiance College in 2010. White also teaches CPR/first aid as an instructor of physical education and serves as the faculty advisor and clinical education coordinator for the sports medicine minor.

2015 SEASON PREVIEW With an experienced and talented squad slated to take the field during the 2015 season, the Case Western Reserve University football team is aiming for a bounce-back campaign in the fall.

a lot of success as sophomores, but not as much as juniors, so we’re looking for a rebound year. I think the group is hungry to come back, and the expectations are greater on defense.”

The Spartans finished 2014 with an overall record of 3-7, including a 3-5 mark in conference games during the team’s first season as an affiliate member of the President’s Athletic Conference. Greg Debeljak is hoping for a quick turnaround, as the 12th-year head coach will be returning 40 letterwinners, including eight starters on offense and 10 on defense.

The Spartans ranked fourth in the PAC in total defense in 2014, yielding 371.7 yards per game, and were third in the conference and 68th among all Division III teams in rushing defense (136.7 yards per game).

”Expectations, with last year being a down year, are to rebound,” said Debeljak. ”We have more kids coming back than most years, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to happen. We have a lot of experience, but we have to do the right things in practice and prepare, and we have to make plays in critical situations.” CWRU has posted a winning record in seven of its last eight seasons, going 62-21 during the stretch. The Spartans will be aiming for their first postseason appearance since the 2009 season, and their first conference championship since the 2011 campaign.

DEFENSE

With nearly the entire starting unit returning for CWRU, the squad will have no shortage of experience on the defensive side of the ball in its third year of running the 3-4 formation. Furthermore, with eight of the defensive starters slated to be seniors, the group is aiming for a breakout season in 2015. ”With an overwhelming majority of players with time as starters, we are very experienced on defense,” said Debeljak. ”The senior class had 16

Line

The core of the defensive line will consist of three senior starters in ends Justin Williams and Dayton Snyder, and nose guard Josh Rogers. Rogers was named to the all-UAA first team in 2014 after totaling 40 tackles (including six for a loss), while Snyder, an all-UAA second team selection, led all PAC players and was 10th in Division III with three fumbles recovered in addition to totaling 47 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Williams finished the season five tackles (2.5 for a loss), despite being limited to just two games due to injury. Junior Tyler Doty will see time at nose guard, with seniors Nate Nachazel and Tyler Hamilton and sophomore Jason Lockamy adding to an already deep group at the end positions. ”We have three senior starters, but we feel like we have seven defensive lineman that can play. There is a lot of experience and a lot of depth, and I think we will be able to go two-deep for the first time in a long time,” said Debeljak.

Linebacker

The heart of the defense for the Spartans will be its linebackers, in particular senior inside linebacker Gavin Sandidge, who was the team’s lone all-PAC first team selection in 2014 after finishing the

He has a great burst and a great love for the game, and he plays at a very high level physically,” said Debeljak. ”I don’t think you’re going to find a better one – he’s the best kid that we see at that position from anybody that we play against.” Joining Sandidge at the inside linebacker position will be another senior in Aaron Weisberg, an all-PAC honorable mention, who finished the year with 80 tackles as well. ”We have players that can fill a role,” said Debeljak on his group of interior linebackers. ”Weisberg is a really sharp kid and knows the game very well. We have returners that played last year – Tim Briercheck was very productive when he had a chance to play, in addition to both Justin McMahon and Andrew Banathy. ”We have good depth, and we can rotate players situationally to take advantage of what they do really well.” Meanwhile, the Spartans will aim to overcome the loss of outside linebacker Everett Dishong, who will miss the entire 2015 campaign due to injury, by using a number of replacements at the position to fill the gap. ”We’re hoping that we can use multiple players to make up for the production that Everett gave us,” said Debeljak. ”KJ Pederson is a three-year starter, and we’re moving him to the wide side of the field, which will suit him better. It will also be a number of players who will fill that other role, including [junior] Zach Lyon, who will be the first one up. We’re pretty confident that we can get, if not production like Everett, then approaching it.” Junior Jeep Madison and sophomores Chanan Demery, Alex Habeeb, Pete LeMaster and Dan Techman should all see action at outside linebacker this season as well.

Secondary

Veterans are expected to lead the secondary as well this season for the Spartans, particularly among the team’s talented safeties. ”We have a lot of experience and a pretty high talent level on the secondary, especially at safety. We have three safeties that we feel are good, and it will be difficult to divvy-up playing time, because they are all deserving,” said Debeljak Two seniors are among the group of safeties,

including all-UAA second team selection Scott Suren and Jordan Esteban, while sophomore Cody Calhoun will see heavy playing time at the strong safety position with sophomore Daniel Fabiniak backing him up. Both starting cornerbacks return for the Spartans as well, with junior and all-UAA second team honoree Nick Kwon and senior Mike O’Donnell slated to headline the position again in 2015. ”Kwon some great physical skills that can allow him to be a shutdown corner, and O’Donnell will be served well by his experience. I think it’s a really good and versatile unit.” Returners Mike Devereaux, Tyler Campbell and Adrian Cannon should factor into the Spartan’s defensive secondary as well during the season.

OFFENSE

The majority of players will be returning on the offensive side of the ball as well, for a unit that averaged 22.0 points per game and 327.3 yards per game in 2014. While still young, the adaptable group gained experience last season, which should bode well for the upcoming campaign. ”I think we can go in a lot of different directions, so if there are injuries, we can shift from being a running team to a throwing team or vice versa,” said Debeljak. ”There is experience and there is a good amount of balance, so I think all of the coaches are expecting an improvement and more excitement on offense this season.” The CWRU offense ranked in the top half of the PAC in passing yards per game, and excelled in the red zone last season, converting on 83.9% of their trips inside the opponents’ 20-yard line to lead all PAC teams during the year.

Quarterback

The Spartans will be looking to fill the void at quarterback left by the graduation of Billy Beecher, who started all 10 games at the position, throwing for 16 touchdowns and rushing for a pair. The leading candidate to replace Beecher is sophomore Rob Cuda, who saw action in three games during his freshman season, completing nine-of-14 attempts for 94 yards and a touchdown. ”I think Rob can be a great quarterback at this level,” said Debeljak. ”He can make plays with his feet, with his arm and with his head. I think he’s the whole package, and we can really let him go this year.” Other options at quarterback include junior Stephen

Running Back

After averaging 109.4 yards per game on the ground last season, the Spartans will once again utilize a variety of backs to establish their running game in 2015. ”The list can go down the line of players that saw action last year and had success. We’ve always had the philosophy of rotating running backs to keep people fresh – you’re not going to see a 1,000-yard rusher, but you might see four 500-yard rushers,” said Debeljak. ”I think we have a number of kids that can step up and play well at that position this year.” Included in the group of returners at the position are a pair of all-UAA first team selections in senior fullback Adam Hochman and sophomore running back Anthony Canganelli. Hochman (who was also an all-PAC honorable mention) was the team leader with six touchdowns during the season, including three on the ground and three touchdown receptions, while totaling 290 all-purpose yards. Canganelli led the attack on the ground with 282 yards and a touchdown. Adding depth at running back will be sophomores Aaron Aguilar, Myles Anthony, and Jeffrie Brown Jr., while sophomores Jacob Burke and Alek LaVeck will backup Hochman at fullback.

Junior all-UAA honorable mention Brendan Lynch (278 yards, 2 TDs) and sophomore Luke DiFrancesco (259 yards, 1 TD) tied for the team lead with 31 receptions apiece, and senior Bryan Erb caught 22 passes over six games for 254 yards and three touchdowns. Seniors Cronin and Tap Tasker, junior Ben Fernback, and sophomore Zak Hurd should provide additional options for the offense in 2015.

Line

While the offensive line for the Spartans is slated to be without a senior starter in 2015, the majority of its returning members saw starting action last season, and should benefit from a year of familiarity with each other. ”We had three freshman starters last year, and right now, we don’t have a senior starter on the unit – it will be three sophomores and two juniors when camp opens up,” said Debeljak. ”We also have eight or nine freshmen linemen coming in, and two or three of them we view as options that can play right away if they pick up the system.” Leading the way will be sophomore center Gage Blair, who started all 10 games and earned allUAA and all-PAC recognition during his freshman campaign. Two other sophomores are slated to start on the left side of the line, including tackle Ryan Merlau (seven starts in 2014) and guard Ryan DeMarinis (three starts in 2014). On the right ride, juniors Dante Capicchioni and Nate Lewis, who each started one game, will be at guard and tackle, respectively, while senior Torin Colchagoff, junior Robbie Sabatelle and sophomore Alex Nesvisky will all add to the line’s depth.

Wide Receiver

”We saw a lot more communication in the line during the spring. There was a lot of talking, which was a good sign that they knew what they were doing and they were helping each other. The chemistry is good and the talent is good, so if we stay healthy, we’ll have a solid offensive line.”

”We have a lot of different kind of options at the position,” said Debeljak. ”We have some bigger guys that you could label as tight ends in Ethan Albers and Zech Medved. We have smaller options that are more of the traditional slot receivers, like Brendan Lynch and Dan Cronin. And then we have some bigger players on the outside, like Bryan Erb.”

SPECIAL TEAMS

Passing options should be plentiful for the CWRU quarterback this season, not only in terms of the number of receivers with playing time on their resumes, but also in the variety of pass catchers available.

The team will be returning five of its six leaders in receiving yards last year, for an offensive that averaged 217.9 yards per game through the air. Albers, a senior tight end, led the team with 359 yards and five receiving touchdowns last season, while another tight end, junior Zech Medved, was second on the team with 297 yards and three touchdowns. 18

Two kickers are slated to return for the Spartans in sophomores Ben Carniol and Weston Salerno. Carniol appeared in one game during his freshman season, converting on a pair of extra point attempts. Salerno will be competing for time as well, after playing for the junior varsity team last year. ”I think our kicking game is solid. They are reliable and consistent, and I think we know what we are going to get out of them,” said Debeljak. Sophomore Jacob Burke (38.5 yards per punt, six punts inside the 20-yard line) looks to begin his first full season as the team’s primary option at

punter, following an all-UAA second team nod after a strong stint at the end of the year at the position in 2014. ”We have the potential to have a special punter this year, because he was so good last year and was still learning. I think the year of experience under his belt, coupled with the hard work he put in over the summer, could make Jacob a really good punter, and potentially a huge weapon.” The return game should feature a pair of all-UAA second team honorees, with Calhoun slated to return kicks, and Cronin entered on the depth chart as the team’s punt returner.

THE SCHEDULE

The 2015 schedule features all familiar opponents for the Spartans, with eight PAC and two UAA opponents. Case Western Reserve will play five home games, including a pair under the lights at DiSanto Field. The Spartans will open their campaign at UAA-rival Chicago (which received a vote in the D3Football. com preseason poll) on September 5th at 1:00 p.m. It will be the 26th-meeting all time between the longtime opponents. After a bye on September 12th, CWRU will turn its attention towards its second season of competition in the PAC, with 11 teams vying for the conference title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Debeljak is optimistic that after a year of experience in the conference, the Spartans are ready to take a step forward.

”We thought that week-in, week-out it was going to be a better level of competition than what we had been playing, and that’s exactly what we got,” said Debeljak. ”It is a very deep league, headlined by two teams ranked in the top-25, but the middle and lower-end of the PAC didn’t have much of a drop off. Each game was going to be a battle, so we needed to be prepared each week. ”I think our kids now know that, and after going 3-7, they got the message that this is a very good league.” The Spartans will play their home opener against Saint Vincent College on September 16th at 7:00 p.m. Case Western Reserve will then head on a two-game road trip, before returning to Cleveland on October 10th for the team’s homecoming game against Waynesburg University at 1:30 p.m. Four of the team’s final six games will be at home, including matchups against preseason top-25 teams in #15 Washington & Jefferson on October 24th and #23 Thomas More on November 7th. Sandwiched inbetween the two will be a Halloween day matchup against UAA foe Washington University (Mo.). The Spartans will conclude their regular season on November 14th at Carnegie Mellon University with the 30th-annual Academic Bowl.

ACADEMIC BOWL Each fall, student-athletes from Case Western Reserve University and Carnegie Mellon University meet on the gridiron with the victor claiming the Academic Bowl. Although the football series between the Spartans and Tartans began in 1970, it wasn’t until 1986 when the annual meeting between two of the nation’s top academic institutions was labeled the Academic Bowl. With each school ranked amongst the nation’s elite research and scholastic institutions, a natural rivalry exists in academics. So as competition in the classroom continues, the winner of the coveted Academic Bowl can claim bragging rights on the athletic field for at least one year. The Academic Bowl is more than a trophy, however, as it emphasizes a “Commitment to Academic and Athletic Excellence”. The Spartans won the first Academic Bowl in 1986, defeating Carnegie Mellon 21-14. In the all-time Academic Bowl series, the Tartans hold a 15-13 advantage. 66

THE UAA: WHERE THEORY MEETS PRACTICE For 29 years, the University Athletic Association has continued to serve as a bold statement of the vision of its founders — that the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence are complementary goals and can be achieved without the compromise of one by the other. The members of the UAA hold that the success of intercollegiate athletics is wholly dependent upon institutional integrity and the ability of institutions to complete the full integration of athletics into the academic fabric of higher education. The UAA is a significant expression of the principle that the provision of a highquality college athletic experience is worth the commitment required of an institution. It is worthwhile not only because it benefits the student-athletes, but also because it benefits the entire campus community and, in turn, the institution itself. Members of the UAA share the belief that academic excellence and athletic excellence are not mutually exclusive. Implicit in this belief are several sets of assumptions. The first is that the academic enterprise is the primary element Student-athletes are just that — students first and athletes second. The second set of assumptions has to do with athletic excellence. Athletic excellence is not to be confused with a win atall-costs attitude. It properly relates to the caliber of experience offered to students who participate in intercollegiate athletics.

Athletic teams should have the benefit of qualified coaching — capable individual chosen for professional competence and commitment to putting the welfare of the student first. They should play and practice in first-rate facilities at reasonable times. Their equipment should be safe, of high quality, and conducive to the best performance possible. A consistent and challenging level of athletic competition should be provided to both women and men. The final assumptions concern what might be termed a proper athletic emphasis. Athletic programs are extracurricular activities conducted for students and should be given consideration similar to that accorded other such institutionally sponsored activities. They should not only complement the academic experience, but should also reflect the quality of the academic environment within which they exist. Division III is an approach to athletics — not a synonym for third-rate. The University Athletic Association

sponsors competition in 23 sports — twelve sports for men and 11 sports for women — including football, soccer, cross country, volleyball, basketball, fencing, wrestling, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, baseball, softball, outdoor track and field, tennis, and golf. Many student-athletes from UAA institutions have been recognized for their achievements as scholars and athletes. During the 201415 academic year, 26 studentathletes from UAA institutions were recognized as Capital One Academic All- Americans®, 204 received AllAmerica honors in team or individual sports, and 12 garnered national championship event titles or Player of the Year accolades, and eight more won national titles in relays. In addition, 10 student-athletes from UAA institutions were among the select group of seniors across the country named NCAA Postgraduate Scholars. Teams throughout the UAA are perennial contenders for postseason play. In 2014-15, UAA teams advanced to the national championship and captured the national title in women’s swimming and diving, while women’s tennis and volleyball posted runnerup finishes.. In all, 19 UAA teams posted topten finishes in their national championships, including 10 among the top-five, and 12 others finished in the top 20. 84

THE PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence. The league’s name clearly reflects its founding principle that operational control of all aspects of intercollegiate athletics is ultimately the responsibility of the presidents of each member institution, and thus active presidential leadership and oversight is paramount in conference administration. Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. The PAC and its membership continue its original, defining mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Institutions involved understand that the key components to its progress lie in the foundation of faith in each member by each other member. It is the conviction of its membership that the PAC is the solution to the dilemma of intercollegiate athletic competition, and they have staked their athletic future on this premise. Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy. The PAC expanded its membership to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly a NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member, joined the conference in 2006 as it began its reclassification to NCAA Division III status. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play in 2007 as it started its NCAA Division III reclassification. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007. In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. During the 2014-15 academic year, nine PAC student-athletes were honored with Capital One Academic All-America honors. Also, the Thomas More women’s basketball program and W&J junior wrestler Nick Carr claimed NCAA Division III national championships in their respective sports.
