July Summer GARDENING Summer is here! Here are a few tips to keep your garden healthy and what to start planting now for a fall harvest: It’s time to clean up the garden and remove all debris and dead plants

Remove weeds—making sure to get the roots so they will not grow back! July is the time to plant summer squash, cucumbers, onion sets for green onions, kale, summer crisp lettuces, fall peas, green beans and leeks Check outside plants and trees for animal damage Stake tall flowers so they continue to grow upright in the hot summer months. Water with a soaker hose to keep the plants that need it cooled off and wet. Be sure not to over water. Start to harvest and dry herbs. Use an all-purpose to re-fertilize in mid-July to feed container crops, garden crops, flowers, shrubs and trees. If using dry-type fertilizers, water them in thoroughly. Add a layer or two of mulch to your sensitive veggie and flower bushes to cover the base and protect their roots. Deadhead Perennials in the first two weeks of July to motivate flowers to continue growing. Water often! Deep and infrequently is better than shallow and often. Start planning your fall crops such as broccoli, beets, turnips and carrots Take notes and buy some shrubs and trees that you would like to see in your winter garden next season
