TAX TIPS

Filing Deadline: Midnight—Tuesday, April 18th 2023

 Gather all 2022 documents that support income and deductions you plan to include on your return. Whether received by mail or online, collect in a folder so you’ll have them all together when it’s time to complete your return.

 Your W-2 and/or 1099 has to be postmarked no later than January 31, so be on the lookout for delivery of these in early February.

 Use the Interactive Tax Assistant available on the IRS website to find answers to your tax questions about credits and deductions, general filing inquiries and more. You will have access to forms, publications, tips, and answers to FAQs as well as updates on tax law changes. Let Free File do the hard work for you and e-file your tax return for free. It's available exclusively at irs.gov.

 Double-check the accuracy of all the Social Security numbers and other data on your return whether using tax preparation software or online services.

 If you do not wish to e-file, you can prepare your return in a variety of ways. You may also be eligible for free inperson help at a volunteer site in your community or check with AARP.

 In addition to being more secure than a paper check in the mail, when you choose direct deposit you usually receive your refund more quickly. With direct deposit you can also have funds deposited into more than one account, or direct funds to an IRA account, or purchase savings bonds. Check with your tax advisor for details.

 Check out the 2022 tax-year IRS Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax, on irs.gov. It highlights everything you’ll need to know when filing your return. IRS Publication 17 is updated each year towards the end of December.

 To prevent identity theft and tax fraud, experts advise that you file as early as you possibly can to claim your refund and prevent someone else from filing using your personal information. If you owe taxes you have the option to file immediately and pay by the tax deadline. Protect your computers and devices by installing security software and using two-factor authentication wherever offered.
