Celebrating America’s Wildlife Legacy Endangered Species Day is an opportunity for people young and old to learn about the importance of protecting endangered species and everyday actions that people can take to help protect our nation’s disappearing wildlife and last remaining open space. Protecting America’s wildlife and plants today is a legacy we leave to our children and grandchildren, so that all Americans can experience the rich variety of native species that help to define our nation.
Started by the United States Senate, Endangered Species Day is the third Friday in May. Every year, thousands of people throughout the country celebrate Endangered Species Day at parks, wildlife refuges, zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, libraries, schools and community centers. You can participate in festivals, field trips, park tours, community clean-ups, film showings, classroom presentations, and many other fun and educational activities. http://www.stopextinction.org/esd.html Celebrate Endangered Species Day May 20th

Each month we will feature a different animal in danger of extinction (already on the ES list) or an animal that is scheduled for inclusion to the Endangered Species list. We’ve set up a display table in the Visitor Center with information on the animal of the month and a donation jar. At the end of each month, monies collected will be sent to a non-profit ambassador organization chosen by us. For the month of May, we are featuring Tigers and the National Tiger Sanctuary as the ambassador non-profit organization. www.nationaltigersanctuary.org Since 1900, the endangered tiger’s habitat and numbers have been reduced by up to 95 percent. Poachers continue to poison water holes or set steel wire snares to kill tigers and tiger prey, selling their skins and body parts for use in traditional Chinese medicine. Despite 20 years of international conservation efforts, we are losing ground to save the tiger as, on the endangered species list, all sub-species of tigers are considered critically endangered species. There are five remaining subspecies (Bengal tigers, Indo Chinese tigers, Siberian tigers, South China tigers, and Sumatran tigers).

THANK YOU Dr. Mark! CWWC Staff and Volunteers gathered in the Visitor Center for a Training Class conducted by Dr. Mark Kombert, on how to use a CO2 dart gun in the unlikely event of an emergency. It was a new experience for some and a refresher for others. Dr. Mark Kombert, DVM, MRCVS has extensive experience in working with wildlife. He completed his residency in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine with the St. Louis Zoo, worked as the head veterinarian at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo for 4 years and was the on-call veterinarian for the Longleat Safari Park prior to going into private practice in Colorado Springs. We are grateful to Dr. Mark for taking time out of his schedule to help us and are honored to have him as a part of our Center. I would like to also thank our very special primary veterinarian, Dr. David Volz in Woodland Park for providing exceptional care to our animals for over 7 years.

Unfortunately with all of the strong winds we had at the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center we did have some very large trees that came down, but fortunately some good came out of it all...Wakanda and Koda got a nice new makeover for their enclosure and many weak trees that were a danger were cut down and removed to help keep this from happening again! This helps protect the enclosure from being damaged by trees as well as helping to weed out the trees that could be a fire danger! The enclosure is a lot more open and beautiful with the sunlight and the rock formations not hidden by all the trees! Thanks to Mike and all of the wonderful CWWC volunteers for helping take down the BIG TREE and who came to the rescue and worked hard to fix this enclosure!

Wolf Myth busting Debunking common myths about wolves Myth: There are more than enough wolves on the landscape already, warranting no further protections. There is no magic number of wolves that will guarantee the long-term survival of the species in a given area. Before humans settled the United States, there were hundreds of thousands of wolves that roamed across the continent. Today, 11,000 wolves remain in Alaska while dedicated recovery efforts elsewhere have brought wolves back from the brink of extinction. 4,000 wolves now survive in the Great Lakes, nearly 2,000 inhabit the Northern Rockies, a couple hundred red wolves in North Carolina and just 42 Mexican wolves in Arizona and New Mexico.
Timber and Tala visit Patriot Elementary school on Fort Carson Army Installation for the Ambassador Wolf Program! The kids of Patriot loved their interaction with Timber and Tala!
These disparate numbers show that it is possible for wolves and humans to coexist, but the size of the population varies with our willingness to accommodate them.

Pres. Obama actually signed the Budget Bill containing the anti-wolf rider into law on April 15th. de-listing wolves in the States of Idaho and Montana. Fall wolf hunts are being planned in both States. Mexican Gray’s are safe, for the time being anyway, they remain under the protection of the ESA.

April 14, 2011 (Washington, DC) – The United States Congress passed legislation today to remove certain populations of gray wolves from the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and return management of fully recovered wolf populations back to state wildlife managers. As part of the FY 2011 budget agreement reached last Friday and passed today, the rider introduced by Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC) member Rep. Mike Simpson of Idaho and CSC Senate Co-Chair, Sen. Jon Tester of Montana, directs the Secretary of the Interior to reissue the latest (2009) ruling declaring the wolf recovered and to return wolf management to state agencies in Montana and Idaho, as well as portions of Utah, Washington and Oregon. Additionally, the provision precludes further lawsuits and preserves the decision made by Wyoming U.S. District Judge Johnson in November 2010, that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) wrongfully rejected Wyoming’s wolf management plan. “Rep. Simpson and Sen. Tester, as well as others in the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, are to be congratulated for their leadership in this historic move towards delisting of wolves and rightfully returning the species management to professional state wildlife managers,” said Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation President Jeff Crane. “We will continue to support efforts in Congress and work with Administration to return all recovered wolf populations to the states.” READ THE REST OF THE STORY AT: http://www.outdoorchannel.com/Hunting/News/U-S-Congress-Passes-Historic-Wolf-Legislation.aspx Information presented on this newsletter is considered public information (unless otherwise noted) and may be distributed or copied.
