Evacuation Enclosure Supply Request from our friends at WOLF Sanctuary Last year W.O.L.F. had to evacuate 30 animals for almost a month due to the High Park Fire. We have already had two scares this year putting us into a pre-evacuation mode. And the fire season, once again, is ravaging Colorado with vengeance this year. In preparation for the possibility that we may need to evacuate again at any time, the county has given us permission to construct 15 evacuation kennels at an off-site facility should we be faced with that horrible situation again. To construct the pens, we need a variety of materials:

BV Scroll Art · Bruce Vanderpool

www.bvscrollart.com

• Chain link fencing - 1200 linear feet of 6’ fencing and 1110 linear feet of 5’ fencing • Weed barrier fabric - 3100’ in length by 4’ wide • Weed fabric pens • Tarp - 350’ of 10’ wide tarps and 500’ of 6’ wide tarps • Zip ties • Pea gravel - 700 tons • Hog rings • 30 doghouses or dogloos • 15 padlocks • Double wide gate or livestock gate for a truck to drive through • Wheel barrels • Hog ring pliers • Wire cutters • General purpose pliers • Work gloves • 15 5-gallon buckets for water • 300’ of heavy duty hose Anything that you can donate to us or provide a discount would be greatly appreciated. We would provide you with a tax receipt of donated items for your tax return and provide acknowledgement in our next newsletter. Thank you for your consideration and generosity. Shelley J. Killing Wildlife or Saving Our National Parks? Posted by Lori Colt for WildEarth Guardians America’s National Park Service’s budget hasn’t changed in seven years, but now the sequester will force over a $100 million in cuts to the Park Service – just as tourist season begins. To save our national parks, Congress could easily trim $100 million from the federal-wildlife killers’ budget and divert it to the Park Service. Instead of killing enough coyotes to cover the length of 700 football fields like they did in 2011, national gems like Yellowstone and Yosemite could be funded. Rather than support the USDA’s wasteful program that kills millions of America’s birds, mammals, fish, and even domestic pets each year for agribusiness and other conglomerates, Congress should reroute this misused taxpayer money. The Park Service’s cuts will mean more uncollected garbage, fewer cleared trails, shorter visiting hours and fewer visitors. $100 million doesn’t just hurt our parks, it harms the local surrounding communities, which rely on tourism business. Our national parks supply the economic lifeblood for countless communities across the United States. National parks contribute more than $30 billion in economic activity, support more than 250,000 jobs, and generate $9.34 billion in labor income! So the bottom line is, the majority of Americans, who appreciate wildlife and wild places are getting ripped off. Tax dollars which should pay for wildlife conservation, national park preservation, and related jobs, are used to destroy our nation’s wildlife, against our wishes. Help right this wrong! Please join our letter to Congressional leaders. These two elected officials must hear our outcry that we value our parks and cherish our wildlife, but we abhor the waste, abuse, and misuse of federal funds to kill our precious wildlife for the well-heeled few in agribusiness. Please join us to end the government’s war on wildlife. www.causes.com/endwildlifeservicesfunding

CWD Carlos EDD (ret.) has been entered in the AHA Hero Dog Awards - Military Dog Category again this year. It is so important for Carlos to not only be in the contest but also for him to win the Military Dog Category.

all 10 dogs back to the US and found them great homes.

With the draw down of troops in Afghanistan right now, that means the need for CWDs like Carlos will also be decreasing. Unfortunately, some of the Contract Companies do not want to pay for transporting their retiring dogs back to the US. It is very expensive and greed takes the place of doing what is right for the dogs that have worked tirelessly protecting our troops. The Contractor that owned Carlos didn’t want to pay that money either and just a few months ago we found out from management that when he was retired, they farmed him out to a “local Afghan national” where he was subjected to abuse and neglect. The Contractor reclaimed him when they found out, but they still wouldn’t pay to bring him back to the US. It was only because an officer in the US Air Force found him and escorted him back to the US that I have him and that he is alive and doing well.

carlos

Carlos’ entry has already raised awareness of CWDs and his winning would raise an even greater awareness that would put the spotlight on Contractors to bring the dogs back to the US where they could be adopted into loving forever homes or at least encourage them to contact MWDA to help with transport and finding them homes. Carlos’ Charity Partner (MWDA) would receive a $1500 donation if Carlos wins the Military Dog Category as well.

Voting runs through July 30th. You are allowed to vote once daily with a valid email address. Here is the link to Carlos’ nomination page that will become the voting page on May 7th. http://www.herodogawards.org/ contestants/?nominee=17792578 If you would, PLEASE share Carlos’ nomination with your friends, family, co-workers, businesses and organizations as well as on your social media networks as well. If you are on Facebook, drop by Carlos’ fan page and give it a like. YES...he has an actual FAN PAGE this year. https://www.facebook.com/CWDCarlosHeroDog

Around 8-10 months ago, another Contract company was going to just release 10 retired CWDs in the Afghan desert rather than pay to bring them home. Luckily, Mili- Ruby Ridpath tary Working Dog Adoptions (MWDA) and US War Dog MWDA Director of Educational Outreach Association heard about it, raised the funds, transported www.MilitaryWorkingDogAdoptions.com

looking for a forever home A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself

A hundred years from now, it will not matter the sort of house I lived in, what my bank account was, or the car I drove... but the world may be different because I was important in the life of animals and the creatures on this earth.

Duke

Glimmer

My name is Duke. I’m in the market for a new place to call home. I am known as the life of the party, I can mesmerize you with my beautiful eyes so you just can’t help but pet me. I’m handsome and easy going, what else could a person want? If you’re looking for a new addition to the family please come by and ask for me! I do not like to share my litter box and I only like Fresh step natural litter in my litter box. I am front declawed so I should be an indoor cat only. Due to my not liking to share my litter box, I will do best as your only feline forever friend!

Looking for your new best friend? I am too! My name is Glimmer and I am looking for a new home with a warm bed, full food bowl, a gentle hand to give lots of belly rubs and no small animals for me. I am a gentle well behaved girl with lots of love to give. I do need someone to show me how to be the princess I truly am! Please come by and say hi!

Vieques Humane Society - Vieques, Puerto Rico, a small island located off the mainland’s east coast, for many years offered no veterinary or animal rescue services. During the early 1980’s, a handful of concerned immigrants from the states and a few local residents took a serious interest in improving the welfare of the animals. They began by feeding the island’s multitudinous strays and soliciting the help of veterinarians from Puerto Rico to sterilize them. By 1987, the Vieques Humane Society and Animal Rescue, Inc. was officially established as a non-profit organization. Today they still offer the only veterinary services on the island and have developed strong community based programs.
