COLORADO WOLF AND WILDLIFE CENTER JULY-AUGUST 2013 Micah had a great time with his friend Ethan this month! He had such a great time that we had to turn to Facebook to caption the photo.

The winner of the Facebook caption contest is Sayuri Anarion, with: “Finally!

Kathy Mills also summed it up pretty well with: “See how happy I am today!

Photo tours are $100 for the first four people. Guests need to be 18 years old or over to play with the big wolves, but don’t fret! Kids 8 and over can still have their photos taken with Keyni or our red foxes!

FIRE MITIGATION

EMERGENCY ADOPTION

This sprinkler system has 2000’ of PVC pipe that skirts the wolf enclosures. In the event of a fire this system has a digital panel made up with 8 zones. We would press the zones that we need attention to the most. This will initiate the sprinkler system and water will spray up to 50’ for 1/2 hour for each zone.

Wildlife tour guide needed

The tank is 2,500 gallons. We will be purchasing our second this fall. This may not put out a fire, however it can sure help to maintain with ground and tree saturation that can buy us time to evacuate our animals if needed.

A big thank you to Gordon’s landscaping for donating his time and labor to install this wonderful system and with great gratitude to the donors who has contributed to our fire mitigation program.

WILDLIFE TOUR GUIDE NEEDED Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday REQUIREMENTS: Public speaking is a priority. Position includes giving educational tours to our guests, handling meat, feeding animals, pen cleaning duty along with general maintenance of the Center.

Other duties can include landscaping, painting, riding an ATV, and fire mitigation.

• You will need a health insurance card and have a current tetanus shot.

• You must be in good health and can lift at least 50 pounds.

• This is a part time position. There are no health benefits or vacation pay.

• You must have a positive attitude and be a quick learner.

• You will be on a 3 month probation.

• You need a current drivers license.

Neat appearance and professionalism will be required.

Hours vary, but expect to be here for at least 8 hours.

Prior knowledge of wildlife, animal husbandry and public speaking is a plus.

Pay is $120.00 for the 4 days. You will need to fill out a W-2 and W-9.

Description Explosive Detection Dog CWD Carlos retired in 2011 at 8 years old from protecting US and ISAF forces in continuous deployment for nearly 5 years. CWD Carlos, who worked with the US Army’s 3rd & 4th Infantry Divisions in Baghdad for 2½ years, was then transferred to Kandahar in 2009 to work in direct support of US Special Forces on the front lines.

Hero dog Carlos is credited with actual finds on missions which saved countless American Soldier lives. As Carlos aged, he was transferred to work with ISAF. Sadly, upon retirement the contracting company farmed Carlos out to a local Afghan national where he suffered neglect. To this day, Carlos still carries the ligature mark scars on his back legs from hobble-style restraints. Fortunately for Carlos, he was eventually reclaimed by the Contractor in Kabul until his adoption by the Ridpath family allowed his “Freedom Flight” HOME! Ever the Noble Warrior, in retirement Carlos has survived Cancer, Spleen and Laryngeal Paralysis surgeries. Carlos continues to joyfully serve his many friends and is a Goodwill Ambassador for Military Working Dog Adoptions. In order to bring awareness to the contributions of all working dogs, Carlos attends events, visits schools and never meets a stranger. He received a USWDA Medal of Recognition and was honored in Colorado Springs as a “2012 Hometown Hero.” A true Hero who saved countless lives while deployed, a Warrior with a zest for life in spite of challenging medical issues: CWD Carlos inspires everyone he meets!

The National Rally to Protect America’s Wolves! to be held in Washington DC on Saturday, September 7, 2013 from 9AM to 4PM. We will come together in an area adjacent to the Washington Monument on the National Mall, to meet and network with each other, to hear from an impressive and inspirational line-up of speakers and to march peacefully between the Lincoln Memorial and the U.S. Capitol building.

You can register for the Rally at www.rallyforwolves.org. We will post details of the day’s itinerary, including the excellent speaker line-up, as it evolves. Frequently Asked Questions, regarding getting there, lodging, etc will be posted on the site as well. Please be patient as we fill in the details and answer your questions through the website.

This Rally is for America’s vital and beautiful wolves and other native wildlife under siege. This is our rally, your rally.

We are going to Washington to demand that the unethical, cruel and unjust persecution and slaughter of America’s wolves in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Alaska and elsewhere, be brought to an end, now and permanently.

Our message is a public appeal for a better America that respects honest science and ecology, that truly reflects the humane and ethical values of the majority, a country where decency, respect and co-existence with America’s wolves and all native wildlife prevails, in every state.

Project Wolf is not a group, it’s a movement. A groundswell of outrage and emotion which ties thousands of individuals, hundreds of groups, and sanctuaries, together with a unified message. Protect our wolves!

Our Feeding Tour AND Our Full Moon Tours have become so popular, we decided to combine them every month on the evening before and evening after our regular FULL MOON TOUR. We will start with a meet and greet with Keyni - our ambassador wolf pup.

Then meet our resident animals and observe them when they are most active... feeding time! Learn about hunting, howling and hierarchy and communicate with the pack in a group howl at the full moon!

Our Mission is to educate, communicate and overcome the influence of the special interests. We will not shy away from showing the real face of the war on wolves, no matter how hard the images are to look at. We will wok tiredly to stop trapping.

A letter from from Mission: Wolf!

We are in the midst of a busy and productive summer full of youth groups and visitors that are keeping our staff volunteers on their toes. As the hot sun dries up the local forest we have found ourselves facing a high wildfire risk. This summer we have already reacted to two local fires that put us on potential evacuation notice. A fire could catch nearby at any moment, giving us only hours or minutes to evacuate our sanctuary. We have an evacuation plan in place to get the animals out of harm’s way but we need a safe place to take the wolves, horses, and staff.

In cooperation with Valley Ace Hardware, Beach Concrete and several skilled volunteers we have initiated the creation and construction of a large metal barn. This barn will be a temporary home for our animals and evacuation vehicles in case we need to evacuate. We have already secured over $60,000 of the $100,000 project.

We graciously request your help to generate the missing funds. It is of the utmost importance that we get this barn up as soon as possible. We have many smaller supplies we need to acquire as well. We have attached a list of these missing items. All donations are tax deductible and 100% of the funds received will be used on the projects costs – we do not use donations to pay employees or contractors.

we are responsible. Some of these animals, like those in our ambassador pack, are social around humans and can be leashed. Many others are not. If we are to evacuate these animals, they need to be chemically immobilized. If we cannot evacuate them, their best hope in the event of a fire is to hide in one of the many fire bunkers we have spent the last few years constructing. Once we have evacuated what animals we can, we still need a place for them to live temporarily. Preparing for an evacuation seems like a monumental task but we are confident that we will achieve our goals!

We have been working hard to mitigate fire danger, in hopes that we will not have to evacuate. We have continued clearing dead wood, building fire bunkers, and revising our detailed evacuation plans. Three of our volunteers just returned from a weeklong wildlife immobilization training. We have also successfully conditioned some of our less social animals to walk into crates to be fed, which will make evacuating those animals much easier.

Still, there is much to be done. If you are able to make a donation for one of these items, even if it is a small one, it will make a difference. Encouraging others to become wolf caretakers can help too! In doing so, you will help to ensure the continued welfare of our resident wolves and horses.

Hi there. My name is Rayne. I am one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. I am loyal and loving. One of my favorite things ever is to give love and be loved. My people time is very important to me because I just have to show you how much I love all the time.

I get along with some other dogs so bring yours by, if you come to see me, so we can meet too. I am an active girl, so I hope my new forever family likes to play fetch and go for walks or hikes. Come see me soon, I have been looking for my forever home for over 6 months now!

Vieques Humane Society - Vieques, Puerto Rico, a small island located off the mainland’s east coast, for many years offered no veterinary or animal rescue services. During the early 1980’s, a handful of concerned immigrants from the states and a few local residents took a serious interest in improving the welfare of the animals. They began by feeding the island’s multitudinous strays and soliciting the help of veterinarians from Puerto Rico to sterilize them. By 1987, the Vieques Humane Society and Animal Rescue, Inc. was officially established as a non-profit organization. Today they still offer the only veterinary services on the island and have developed strong community based programs.
