SLICE OF CRUELTY

Breaking Investigation: Cows Beaten & Dragged at World’s Largest Pizza Cheese Supplier

Is your pizza topped with horrific animal cruelty? A shocking new Mercy For Animals undercover investigation reveals heartbreaking animal abuse at a milk producer for Leprino Foods – the world’s largest mozzarella cheese maker and major cheese supplier to Pizza Hut, Domino’s and Papa John’s. Using a hidden camera, MFA’s brave undercover investigator documented the following horrific abuses: • Workers viciously kicking and punching cows, and stabbing them with screwdrivers, causing bloody wounds and injuries • Cows being violently whipped in their faces and bodies with chains and metal wires • Workers maliciously shocking sick and injured cows and dragging them with tractors • Sick or injured cows suffering from open wounds, infections, and injuries left to suffer without proper veterinary care

Foods to immediately implement meaningful animal welfare policies to prevent the type of egregious animal abuse that was exposed during this investigation throughout its dairy supply chain. Treated as mere milk-producing machines, cows exploited and abused for cheese used on pizzas endure lives of near constant misery and deprivation. These highly intelligent and social animals suffer almost unimaginable abuse from the time they are born and ripped from their mothers’ sides until they are so physically worn out from repeated pregnancies and constant milk production that they are sold for slaughter.

This has to stop!

Sadly, unconscionable cruelty and violence are standard practice for dairy companies nationwide. Thankfully, caring consumers can help end the MFA’s latest investigation is al- needless suffering of cows and other ready making national news, after farmed animals by choosing vegan althe Associated Press broke the story ternatives to milk and cheese. this morning. We could not be more proud of one of our interns who is standing up and being a voice for our wolves. Way to go Casey!! A note from intern Casey: I recently attended the public hearing for wolf management in Lynwood and it had some similarities and differences to the truth or consequences conference. There were less people in attendance and almost every single person who spoke was in favor of helping the wolves. Most of the comments were about the lack of transparency in the government when it came to reporting information on wolf pack numbers and exactly what happened with the huckleberry pack. There were also issues with WDFWs involvement with USFWS as they called them the killing party. Mostly they were angry that the non lethal measurements not being implemented enough and there could have been more done to save the huckleberry pack. Only about 30 or so people spoke, everyone who wanted to was allowed to speak and they were allotted 3 min. I was the third person to speak so I was slightly intimidated, but I felt good being around all the wolf people. We spoke facing the audience with our backs to the WDFW until someone turned the podium around. As we talked they typed our comments on a big screen for everyone to see. However they did not type every comment or suggestion and seemed quite biased towards certain comments. Miss you guys!

Not just wolves...

Idaho Wolf, Coyote Hunting Derby Wants Larger Area BOISE, Idaho | September 29, 2014 | By Keith Ridler Associated Press Idaho does not respect wildlife and will be happy to kill the last predator. Shame on wildlife service for supporting this slaughter. It is all about the money and stakeholders! The Bureau of Land Management said a permit is required because a derby is considered a competitive event with prizes. Last year, the hunting group offered two separate, $1,000 prizes — one for the hunter who killed the biggest wolf, the other for the hunter who bagged the most coyotes. Alder said prizes haven’t

been determined for this winter’s event that’s expected to draw more than 300 people, about 100 to 150 of them hunters. The BLM plans to make public an environmental analysis Thursday and take public comments for 15 days. The agency said about 1,500 square miles are involved. “We are anticipating that lots of people have comments,” BLM spokeswoman Sarah Wheeler said. “It’s very polarizing. What people have a hard time understanding is that the BLM doesn’t

regulate hunting. We’re looking at the impacts it’s going to have on public lands.” Alder said the impacts would be “minimal.” Sarah McMillan of WildEarth Guardians disagreed, and said her group and others will try to stop the derby through comments, or legal challenges should BLM officials approve the permit. “We don’t believe these kinds of activities are appropriate on our public lands,” she said. “We’re hopeful that the BLM won’t approve the killing contest.”

FUN PHOTOS

Hi there. My name is Diamond. There is no diamond in the rough with me, I am a grown gal who is already polished up and ready to go home. You do not have to train me to use a litter-box, or anything. A gal at my age just knows what goes! Unfortunately a gal my age does not often get thought about when someone wants to adopt. I am young enough to have a nice long life ahead of me, and old enough to be done with all the crazy kitten antics. I enjoy spending my time in a quiet box, or on a windowsill to watch everything going on outside. If you have a dog, you may just find me cuddled up with him or her. I am a kitty who loves dogs in her life. I have been with TCRAS for quite some time and they have a special offer just for you! Call for the details! Reggie is a handsome twoyear old Husky/Shepard mix. He is neutered, micro chipped, and up to date on all vaccinations, including kennel cough. At seventy pounds, he’s a big guy, but very gentle! He likes to stay close to his people and to take walks. He knows sit, stay, wait, and loose-leash walking. He likes the work—and getting treats for his efforts—and would do well in a home where he can continue working SLVAWS on obedience skills. He is crate trained, house trained, stays off of furniture, and knows to only chew on his toys. He would do best in a house without other dogs although he does do well with some female dogs. He’s great with people, and a very sweet dog! If you are interested, please call 719-587-9663 (WOOF) to ensure he is on the doggie bus to Petsmart on any Sat. at 7680 N. Academy.

CWWC will pay you $200 towards the shipping to a qualified home from the Vieques Humane Society

Phantom is available at 7680 N. Academy Petsmart, Colorado Springs, on any Saturday 11-5 until adopted. If you would like to reserve him, please call ahead: 719-587-9663 (WOOF). Phantom came into our shelter as a stray from a small town. He is shy, but is overcoming his shyness. He has been abused and cringes when you reach out to pet him. Neutered. He needs a little more leash training. Gets along well with other dogs. Loves to play with other dogs in one of our dog parks. A gentle, sweet soul. We believe he is a Utonagan. The Utonagan is a mix of 3 breeds SLVAWS Malamute, German Shephard and Husky. often mistaken for a wolf hybrid or wolf. He now weighs about 75 lbs and is GROWING. He is perhaps 9 months old. He may grow to about 90 lbs.

working together to find loving forever homes

Vieques Humane Society - Vieques, Puerto Rico, a small island located off the mainland’s east coast, for many years offered no veterinary or animal rescue services. During the early 1980’s, a handful of concerned immigrants from the states and a few local residents took a serious interest in improving the welfare of the animals. They began by feeding the island’s multitudinous strays and soliciting the help of veterinarians from Puerto Rico to sterilize them. By 1987, the Vieques Humane Society and Animal Rescue, Inc. was officially established as a non-profit organization. Today they still offer the only veterinary services on the island and have developed strong community based programs. www.viequeshumanesociety.org
