Integration between the hotel and urban potential could intensify tourists' attractions as well as travel needs. In this case, the hotel industry in an urban area is a peculiar opportunity to initiate a new culture of local mobility rather than relying on seasonal activities. Malacca, the UNESCO world heritage city, a new venture is crucial for revolution. Music is selected as the theme of the hotel.

! ISSUE What does modernisation in a historic city indicate? Shopping malls, and night clubs is the most indicative trend of a modern night. In the society of modern day, music play a big portion in human life but is music playing a big role? How does music bridge the gap of modern and culture; internation and domestic; tourist and local; knowledge and skill; ideas and people; waves and coast; wind and trees? This is the meeting point of them. MODERN AREA Transition from countryside zone to core zone. BUFFER AREA Control plot ratio and the "plinth" development. Height control. Control of maintenance and upkeep of heritage buildings

A city is a magnet to attract large numbers of people to earn for a better life. As the scale of the city increased, pedestrians' walking speed increased proportionally. More people tend to have no companion. When reality beats happiness, what is the level of these citizen's resilience to difficulties? What is the dignity of human should be instead of claiming themselves as modern people? Culture is one of the ways to bond all people together.

SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL PEFORATED WOOD PANEL Brickfield as a tourism site which famous with the Indian identity, flora pattern is selected as a significant view of the facade. For the hot weather consideration, perforated facade treatment is used to reduce the consumption of energy. On the other hand, this strategy keeps the spaces in between to be more visible. At night, light emitted while activities are carried out. Hence, showing the identity of this forgotten land.

STEEL FRAME

02

The steel frame structure is a light and easy construction method commonly used in a city. In responding to the thousand sheets of steel shaping up the city, these structures are exposed.

THE LOCAL MIXING WALL From the history of Brickfield, recorded that is an old construction site of brick and tile. After a big flood and fire in 1881, buildings made of timber were destroyed. The idea is to build the wall by reusing reclaimed building materials from the local. The material included bricks, stones, and roof tiles. This site belongs to the local.

FLOOD RISK MANAGEMENT SUSTAINABLE URBAN DRAINAGE SYSTEMS (SUDS)

Source control methods decrease the volume of water entering the drainage/river network by intercepting run-off water on roofs for subsequent re-use or for storage and subsequent evapotranspiration.

Managing the residual flood risk is another important aspect, as well as reducing the total volume of surface water run-off discharged.

Vegetated swales Pre-treatment steps remove pollutants from surface Around the building water prior to discharge to watercourses or aquifers.

Sustainable drainage systems use a sequence of techniques that together form a management train. As surface water flows through the system, flow velocity is controlled and pollutants are removed. The management train may include the following stages:

Art Tunnel Retention systems delay the discharge of surface water to watercourses by providing storage. Rainwater storage tank Infiltration systems, nfiltration trenches allowing water to Under carparking area soak into the ground. Infiltration tanks are often used to store stormwater to prevent flooding or overloading the sewers. Guidance published by ciria can be found in the structural design of modular geocellular drainage tanks publication.

TRANSLUCENT CONCRETE

Case study from Italian pavilion expo shanghai 2010

HIGHER STRENGTH Losoncze’s optical fiber concrete blocks claim a higher compressive strength of 7252 psi and a surprising tensile strength of 1015 psi even without steel reinforcing PRE-CAST Maximum for glass fiber being 1200 x 400 mm , and the thickness can range from 25-500mm STRUCTURAL USE Allows translucent concrete to be used for a variety of purposes, from a thin veneer to a structural system

VISIBILITY Translucent concrete could provide safety applications in the future such as speed bumps that could be lit “from below to make them more visible at night”, or to light indoor fire escapes in case of a power failure

beacon

H A B I T A T

This is an idea of using amphibious architecture to design a habitat for an annually flooded area. This design is to propose a way that could maximize the local potential as a radical foundation for the victims to face the gusty disaster.

DYNAMIC LINKING BEACON | AMPHIBIOUS HABIITAT

ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO PROJECT

SEM 6

The design concept is to create "dynamic linking beacon" within the community. The linking of two rivers at the site create a phenomenon called halocline. This makes the junction where two rivers meet an interesting node. Dynamic linking beacon is a beacon of hope which acts as a signal to attract the residents staying over the river to move to the prototype. Linking all victims together form a stronger community.

04

By connecting all neighborhood to form a huge mutual-helping community can actually carry out in the usual life. Residents are encouraged to practice a self-sustaining living. Basic living goods supply, as well as spiritual support among residents during the flood, could lower down the degree of fear. When the flood is coming, these beacon prototypes form into clusters and act as another new beacon to attract another cluster of prototypes to form a stronger bonding structure.

FLOOD CLUSTER FORMATION During the flood, a system of cell growing formation shaped up each individual beacon cell to form a honeycomb structure. Each triangular prototype pulls together to form a cluster of pentagons. The following formation is formed when more clusters of pentagons are linked together, which all originate from a single cell - the beacon. The time these formations increased to mass, the flexible layout allows a flexible pattern to be formed according to the connection between the neighbors.

ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO PROJECT

SEM 6

By taking the water current flow as an advantage, the habitat is positioned at the junction where the river water meet, where the water current is most stable. Here the self-sustaining of self planting system can be carried out. Mini-hydro plant system can be introduced to each prototype, fish feeding, and hydroponic farming can best be held here. And too, this is the best spot where residents can view the phenomena of the halocline, experience the difference in colors, temperatures, speed, salinity, and water density.

This project is to design a Forestry Visitor Center to promote conservation education. This is a chance for utilizing architectural design as a teaching tool to educate guests on the importance of sustainability. Hence, expanding the understanding of the relationship of the human being with the natural environment.

I

This Forestry Visitor Center functions as a gathering space for the public, meeting point for lectures, and learning platform for environmental forestry learners. Two main space was highlighted in this project, the exhibition hall displaying agro products, festival or agro activities, and the galleries showcasing permanent agro products. In other words, this project intent to promote agro-tourism. This building is carefully designed according to the analysis of the surrounding site, zoning, and orientation, play a good demonstration in sustainable design.

The time vortex concept of this visitor center is designed to capture the journey of experiences throughout the building. Time is infinite, humans can think beyond space when time is running fast, but put more attention to experience the surrounding when time is running slow. The motion of vortex allowed visitors to go through spiral kind of circulation which bring in a space of time in motion. The form and material too used brighten up visitors' mood.

This is the view of the central courtyard while visitors first step into the lobby, where the main concept of time vortex starts. We experience more deeply while time is running slow. On the other hand, we concentrate while time is running fast. A glazed ramp spirals around a courtyard at the center of this visitor center leads the dynamic motion in the main space. The journey walking up to the upper floor is abundant, they enjoy the sound, the activities, and the ambiance. Besides, opaque layering of glass curtain wall used in the exhibition hall represents the speeding up of time as well as the accelerating human motion.

This view is taken from the cafeteria. As this design intended to educate people to embrace nature, the building is openly designed with less opaque material to blend the building into nature. The cafeteria is located just next to the central courtyard, facing the courtyard. In the courtyard, the scenario of children having fun, students' lectures, group discussion, the motion of people walking up along the ramp, various crowds happened at different period of time.

This lantern was designed to accommodate the character and mood selected within oneself, expressed using color and light source. Mysterious was chosen as the characteristic.

I

Mysterious derived the definition of difficult or impossible to be understood, explained, or identified. The mysterious color mood was brought out by using three colors, the blue, indigo, and violet. The dark indigo represented the cool and calm emotion, while the violet represented the mystery and unpredictable. To bring out the emotion of mystery in form, there were layers of triangles wrapping around the core of light source. Material wise, the main candle light source is first filtered by thin narrow aluminum wrapped stick reflecting the light. The light reached the semi-transparent plastic paper and to the crepe paper. Different transparency of light would then fall on the surface of the wall or floor as a result of light filtration with different material used. Besides, there were also applications on the design element and design principle. Lines and points were used to create irregular triangular shapes and forms. Repetition of a triangle with graduation arranged in asymmetry way enhanced the hierarchy and movement of the lantern.

Transformation of the selected object from a 2D to 3D form is a warm-up project in the first-year studio. A screw was the object selected and the screw is transformed into an abstract drawing by using design elements learned.

I intended to study different angles of vision on the screw, transforming the 3-dimensional view into a 2-dimensional drawing, and forming it into a 3-dimensional model. There are various types of abstracted screw shapes, arranged in a spiral motion to create a central focus point. Design principles and design elements are shown more when applied with colors and graduation of shapes. Contrast color of both warm and cold color was selected to enhance the radially presented movement.

2D shape of screw abstraction..

In the modeling of transformation, method of addition, subtraction, and exclusion was apply to the design process. The challenge yet was to play against the form with design principal, to achieve the focal point, hierarchy, repetition, graduation, movement and etc.
