Current fruit-bowl in the market
獚 - Take There are a lot of fruit bowl that are sold in the market, but most of them have the similar shape and fragile. Not all of the fruit-bowls are easy to store in the storage, not many fruit-bowls are able to transform its shape. 獚 or Take are able to do what other fruit-bowl are unable to do, user or consumer are able to play with my fruit-bowl, it can be store easily, it can be transform into any shape that the user wanted it to be, it have the strength to hold around 10-15 fruits or similar to 3 - 6.5 kg or more. 獚 or Take means Bamboo in Japanese, Take is intended to enhance user and object interaction and relationship. The target market of my consumers are, for every people, people who likes to cook, people who want to have an aesthetic pleasing object on their table, coffee table or dining table, Chef, housewife, people who are having trouble with the amount of space that they have.
Concept 1 First concept is using the triangular shape, as the basic component of the bowl, each triangular will be 3d printed and coloured that is suitable for the buyer. Each triangle will have its own hinges, the reason being is that it enables the user to transform the shape of the bowl and to expand the bowl as the user intended to.
Concept 2 The second concept is to incorporate the idea of gravity into the bowl. When the fruit are place to the left side of the bowl, all the surface will shifts its position to the left side and it will act to all the other side.
Concept 3 In this concept I wanted to make the fruit bowl as flat as possible when it is not in use and makes it easy to store and space saving. The challenges in this concept it how to make the fruit bowl flat but stiff enough when it is being use, able to hold weight of the fruits and the ability to provide shapes that the user intended too. Many people are able to buy the bowl but each people have their own shape that they wanted it to be, therefore it creates a special object that only the user have. I began playing with fabric and cardboard to solve the challenge and a simple idea of using thread to hold the shape.
Further Development of the final concept 3 and packaging.
Form explorations
竹
Experimentation In these experiment I try using other materials that are suitable for household uses and for fruits. I try to use 3mm cork with 1 mm card in the middle to give it a bit stiffness but when the glue dried the cork become stiffer that what I thought. I tried to playing with the prototype, the cork could give me the shape that I want but after a certain time, it started to crack and break. I then start my semi-final prototype using 1.5mm bamboo ply for the bowl surface. The reason I use bamboo ply is because bamboo have anti-bacteria property, so it can be used for household environment and fruits. The method I’m using for production will be using Laser cutting machinery, using laser cut it reduces the amount of time to produce a bowl as it also gives a precise measurement of the triangular bits. Because laser cut gives burn marks on the cut area, I have to sand it down to eliminate the mark as well as the smell. I use lavender bees wax to eliminate theunwanted smell and to give it a much smoother surface.
In order to hold the shape once it is formed, I used aluminium wire-mesh. The mesh is able to hold on the weigh of 7 orange for a short time but then it started to collapse. In order to solve that problem, I add thread on the side of each point of the bowl. When the thread is pulled it help to bowl to take its shape. For the final product, I will be using the 1.5mm bamboo ply, aluminium mesh to keep it shape and the idea of using thread to lock the shape that it is intended to.
Cost
A.B.N.
Beside is the quote for the laser cut service including the 1.5mm Bamboo plywood. The cost comes to AUD $167.20 for 260 triangular pieces, which can make 3 - 4 fruit-bowl, 1 fruit-bowl cost AUD $56 to have the triangular surface cut. Additional material needed is glue, aluminium mesh, synthetic leather, which I bought from eBay. Aluminium mesh 503mm x 3 meters roll AUD $80. Synthetic leather 900mm x 1.5 meters roll AUD $13. The cost needed to produce the fruit-bowl is around AUD $80 and other miscellaneous material, plus profit of 80%, which sums up to the price of the fruitbowl are AUD $144.
