From Our Executive Director

At Cypress Christian School, we believe in providing as many opportunities as possible for our students to grow spiritually, academically, and physically. Our athletic programs are designed to build both physical strength and personal character. Furthermore, keeping a high degree of physical fitness increases a student’s ability to concentrate in the classroom. On the field of athletic competition, many qualities are developed in an individual that are beneficial in all other areas of life. Such qualities include an appreciation for hard work, selfdiscipline, commitment to a common goal, loyalty, dependability, the ability to deal with loss and adversity, the ability to receive instruction, sacrifice, and teamwork. In addition to all of these benefits, it is great fun to both participate in sports as an athlete and to watch as a parent or sports fan. Stephen Novotny, J.D. Executive Director Cypress Christian School

In all of our athletic programs, our underlying goal is to honor the one who gave us our abilities. As it is written: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” I Corinthians 10:31 We hope this year you will catch the “Warrior Spirit,” enjoy coming out and watching the games, and share in the excitement of our athletic program. Go, Warriors!

Message from Marsha Martin, Athletic Director As we enter into the 2014-2015 school year we are stepping up into a new level of competition with schools we are familiar with but have not faced in district play, at least for some time. We are ready to make this move. It will be tough and there will be struggles along the way, especially this first year, but I believe we are prepared for “Meeting the Challenge” that is before us. As coaches and players plan, strategize, and practice, our number one goal will be to bring honor to Jesus Christ. It will take everyone – students, coaches, and parents – working together to ensure we are “Meeting the Challenge” of TAPPS 4A and that this path leads directly to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Our Football Philosophy

Football at Cypress Christian is much more than a competitive game that young men play. It is an intentional curriculum that uses football to build men. The intent is to produce men who will live with reckless abandon for Christ in all things at all times; men who will be the same in public as they are in private; men who will be great husbands and fathers in the future; men who will learn to build deep meaningful relationships, that will be used to sharpen each other and hold each other accountable for a lifetime. Our success will not be measured in wins and losses, but in how well we close the gap between our potential and our performance as players and as men. In fact, it will probably take ten years to determine just how successful this season really will be.

Goal For every player to know Christ and to make Him known Purpose Statement The purpose of Cypress Christian Football is threefold: 1. Use football to teach principles and values that will result in the building of courageous men who will live sacrificial lives to the glory of God both on and off the field. 2. Purposefully build deep, meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime. 3. Develop each player to be the best football player he can be. Theme Verses – FOOTBALL IS WORSHIP • Colossians 3:17—“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” • Colossians 3:23-24—“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Biblical Football Is Competing • By the Power of God • According to the Word of God • For the Glory of God Excellence in Competition If we are going to worship through football, then we must pursue excellence on the field. We must strive to put the best team on the field with the goal of exceeding our potential as individuals. We will strive for excellence as coaches by developing the best offensive and defensive schemes to fit our personnel. Values: Love, Faith, Humility, Perseverance, Commitment, Trust, Encouragement, Contentment, Courage, and Servant Leadership

2014 PLAYER PROFILES The 9 Principles

1. Called to Love • Our responsibility is to Love: coaches must love the players and players must love each other. 2. Relationship Driven • Be intentional about building community, encouraging and motivating through love. • Players will be called to publicly encourage one another.

3. Servant Leadership • Captains will serve the team, and the varsity will learn to serve the middle school team. 4. Humility – Be the First to Give All • Be faithful, available and teachable

5. Live Lives of Sacrifice • The player must die to himself for the sake of the team. • Being part of a team is being part of something bigger than ourselves. • Being part of a team means we give up rights and gain responsibilities.

6. Success measured in how we “Close the Gap” • We are competing against our own best “selves” to close the gap between our potential and our performance. • We want a player’s best every day in every situation, but what God desires for us is greater than that—it is perfection.

7. Persevering with Eternal Perspective • Pursuing excellence on and off the field through Christ is a life-long journey, not a short-term goal. • Success is a road, not a destination. • You can always do one more: one more block, one more tackle, one more sprint. 8. Live with Passion • God wants us to give the maximum effort in all things, at all times. 9. Love to Lose • We love to win and want to win every game, but winning is only a byproduct of true success; therefore, we are free to play our best because there is no fear of losing. • God’s victories often come through our defeats and, as a result, our character gets refined.

2014 Coach Profiles

Jacob Spenn – Head Coach/Quarterbacks Coach Coach Spenn is entering his seventh season as the head coach and his ninth overall season at Cypress Christian. As head coach he has led the Warriors to a 40 – 29 record, District Championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and six straight playoff appearances. However, his passion is for mentoring and building godly men through the game of football. Everything the football program does is based on building men, not just physically but spiritually as well. It will be years before the true success of the football team is known, but he is committed to being transformational in the lives of every player. Coach Spenn played football collegiately at Taylor University (’95-’98) as a wide receiver, and prior to that he was a standout wide receiver at Watseka High School in Illinois. Along with his head coaching responsibilities he works directly with the quarterbacks during the season.

Chris Laidlaw Defensive Coordinator Defensive Line

Tim Honeycutt Offensive Coordinator Receivers

Tom Nugent Linebackers

Coach Laidlaw is entering his fourth season at Cypress Christian. He has 15 plus years of coaching experience mostly at the collegiate level along with college playing experience. This season he will work with our defensive line along with his defensive coordinator duties.

This will be Coach Honeycutt’s seventh season at Cypress Christian. He will once again coordinate the offense and work with the wide receivers. He played high school football for Dayton.

This will be Coach Nugent’s fourth season at Cypress Christian as both a coach and a teacher. He has over 15 years of football coaching experience. He will continue to work with our linebackers this season.

Coach Spenn on Chris: He is great at breaking down the defense and our schemes so that they are both simple and sound. It is a great blessing to have Chris on our staff and to see his heart for being transformational in the lives of our players.

Coach Spenn on Tim: He brings a passion and excitement for the game of football to the field every day. He has a great way of connecting with the kids and seeing life from their perspective. This is not just true for the high school players because nearly every student at our school knows his name.

Coach Spenn on Tom: I started my coaching career with Tom over 13 years ago and he has been a good friend ever since. He has a great passion for coaching and building up students. The students love being around him and playing for him.

Matt McGee Running Backs

Scott Paulsen Offensive and Defensive Line

Rashaad Leaks Offensive and Defensive Line

Darryl Phipps Defensive Backs

This will be Coach McGee’s second year at Cypress Christian but his first as a varsity assistant. He worked with the middle school program last year but was also on the varsity sidelines. He has a great working knowledge of our players and program. He will work with our running backs this season.

Coach Paulsen joined the Cypress Christian coaching staff as a track coach last year. This is his first time to coach football, but he had a standout high school career in Nebraska. He will be assisting Coach Leaks and working with the offensive and defensive linemen.

Coach Leaks joined the Cypress Christian staff this year. He played high school football in Texas before playing for Louisville and eventually a couple of seasons in the NFL as defensive linemen. He spent two seasons coaching at a 5A public school and is excited to now be in a Christian environment. He will work with both our offensive and defensive linemen this season.

Coach Phipps has over 35 years of high school coaching experience and joined the Cypress Christian staff for the first time this season. He spent most of his time in the Houston Independent School District and was the head coach at three different 4A programs during that time. He will be coaching the defensive back this season.

Coach Spenn on Matt: Matt is a great young coach who always wants to learn and improve. He is a good communicator on the field and is always willing to pick up the slack where needed.

Coach Spenn on Scott: He pays great attention to detail and was a standout athlete that understands the importance of the little things. He also continues to be a huge help with our inseason and off-season weight training programs.

Coach Spenn on Rashaad: He has a great heart for coaching and a great understanding, in large part as a result of his own playing experience, for the impact that a coach can have in the lives of their players.

Coach Spenn on Darryl: Darryl has a great way of motivating his players and is always future focused. His positive attitude is contagious. He has had a great impact on our staff through both his knowledge of the game and his ability to coach it.

2014 SCHEDULE OVERVIEW

Close the Gap The Warriors will move up to TAPPS Division II football this season. For the past six seasons the Warriors have finished first or second in their district and advanced to the playoffs each year. Cypress returns a good number of starters on both sides of the ball but will still be a young team. The Warriors will be changing to an option attack on offense. While they will have an emphasis on running the ball, the goal is to be a balanced team that is difficult to prepare for each week. The defense will continue to be in the 4-3 look with a little 3-4 mixed in depending on the opponent. Special teams will be solid as both kickers return. Division II football will bring new challenges against bigger schools but the Warriors are ready to take on those challenges. Team

2014 MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL COACHES & TEAM PHOTO Kelvin Mason Head Coach Biography: Coach Mason is in his third season as the head middle school coach at CCS. Last year the Warriors were undefeated in district play. Prior to being named the head coach, Kelvin served as an assistant coach for two seasons. As an assistant he was the Defensive Coordinator for both the MS A and B football teams. Coach Mason is a graduate of Heritage Christian Academy, a private Christian School in Huntsville, Texas. Upon graduation he received a scholarship to attend Dallas Christian College and play college basketball. However, his passion for football led him to transfer to Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas, where he played three years of collegiate football. Coach Mason works full time for CCS doing security and maintenance and also coaches MS basketball for the Warriors. Philosophy: Coach Mason loves teaching his players to enjoy the sport and have fun.
