DR. JEFF POTTS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Welcome to the new school year and fall athletics! I am so excited about the synergy that results in a school where The Lord chooses to combine faith, high academic standards and a championship spirit! I believe we are in for an exciting year as the school continues to experience His blessings in athletics, in the classroom and in our students’ hearts. At Cypress Christian School, we believe in providing as many opportunities as possible for our students to grow spiritually, academically and physically. Our athletic programs are designed to build both physical strength and personal character. There is no better classroom than the field of competition for teaching qualities like self-discipline, commitment, dependability, sacrifice and teamwork, just to name a few. In all of our athletic programs, our underlying goal is to honor the One who gave us our abilities. As it is written in Scripture: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” –I Corinthians 10:31 I would invite you to grab that Warrior spirit for our teams as you come out and enjoy our games and encourage all of the players. Cypress Christian School is a special place due to people like you and the relationships fostered through programs such as athletics. So, whether it is another family in the stands, a teacher or an opponent, please take the time to get to know a few people while you are here and share in the blessing that it is to be a part of God’s Kingdom. Go, Warriors!

Managing Athletic Director – Jim Hill “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” –Joshua 1:9 As we watch our young men battle each day to get better as athletes and as men, my goal for our football program is that each member of the team will realize a much larger purpose. We strive to train Christian young men to become Warriors for the Lord, that in everything they do, their actions will have eternal rewards. It is not for my glory or for the glory of men that I will achieve my own fame. I live, work and play with one purpose in mind – to be Warrior strong. That everything in my life, would glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. – 1 Corinthians 10:31

OUR FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY Football at Cypress Christian is much more than a competitive game that young men play. It is an intentional curriculum that uses football to build men. The intent is to produce men who will live with reckless abandon for Christ in all things at all times; men who will be the same in public as they are in private; men who will be great husbands and fathers in the future; and men who will learn to build deep, meaningful relationships that will be used to sharpen each other and hold each other accountable for a lifetime. Our success will not be measured in wins and losses, but in how well we close the gap between our potential and our performance as players and as men. In fact, it will probably take years to determine just how successful this season really will be.

Goal For every player to know Christ and to make Him known Purpose Statement The purpose of Cypress Christian Football is threefold: 1. Use football to teach principles and values that will result in the building of courageous men who will live sacrificial lives to the glory of God both on and off the field 2. Purposefully build deep, meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime 3. Develop each player to be the best football player he can be Theme Verses – FOOTBALL IS WORSHIP • Colossians 3:17 – “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” • Colossians 3:23-24 – “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Biblical Football is Competing • By the Power of God • According to the Word of God • For the Glory of God Excellence in Competition If we are going to worship through football, then we must pursue excellence on the field. We must strive to put the best team on the field with the goal of exceeding our potential as individuals. We will strive for excellence as coaches by developing the best offensive and defensive schemes to fit our personnel. Values Love, Faith, Humility, Perseverance, Commitment, Trust, Encouragement, Contentment, Courage and Servant Leadership

1. Called to Love • Our responsibility is to love: coaches must love the players and players must love each other. 2. Relationship-Driven • Be intentional about building community, encouraging and motivating through love. • Players will be called to publicly encourage one another. 3. Servant Leadership • Captains will serve the team, and the varsity team will learn to serve the middle school team. 4. Humility – Be the First to Give All • Be faithful, available and teachable. 5. Live Lives of Sacrifice • The player must die to himself for the sake of the team. • Being part of a team is being part of something bigger than ourselves. • Being part of a team means we give up rights and gain responsibilities.

6. Success Measured in How We “Close the Gap” • We are competing against our own best “selves” to close the gap between our potential and our performance. • We want a player’s best every day in every situation, but what God desires for us is greater than that—it is perfection. 7. Persevering with Eternal Perspective • Pursuing excellence on and off the field through Christ is a life-long journey, not a short-term goal. • Success is a road, not a destination. • You can always do one more: one more block, one more tackle, one more sprint. 8. Live with Passion • God wants us to give the maximum effort in all things, at all times. 9. Love to Lose • We love to win and want to win every game, but winning is only a by-product of true success; therefore, we are free to play our best because there is no fear of losing. • God’s victories often come through our defeats and, as a result, our character gets refined.

COACH PROFILES

Jacob Spenn – Head Coach Coach Spenn is entering his 12th season as the head coach and his 14th overall season at Cypress Christian School. The Warriors moved up a division last season and still defended their state title well by posting an 8-5 record. In 2017, the Warriors finished the season as the Division III State Champion and Coach Spenn was named the TAPPS 4A Coach of the Year. As head coach, he has led the Warriors to an 80–45 record over 12 seasons. CCS earned District Championships in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2017 and have made nine playoff appearances in the past eleven seasons, compiling an 8-8 record in the post season. The Warriors reached the Elite Eight last season in Division II, after thrilling last second wins against Victory St. Joe and Hyde Park Baptist before falling to district rival Second Baptist in the second round of the TAPPS playoffs. Spenn’s passion is for mentoring and building Godly men through the game of football. Everything the football program does is based on building men, not just physically but spiritually as well. It will be years before the true success of the football team is known but he is committed to being transformational in the lives of every player. Coach Spenn earned four collegiate letters at Taylor University (’95-’98) as a wide receiver and prior to that he was a standout wide receiver at Watseka High School in Illinois.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL COACHES & TEAM Bruce Williams – Head Coach Biography: Coach Williams takes over the leadership of the middle school program this season. He was on Coach Spenn’s staff previously and is excited to return as both a coach and a fulltime teacher. In addition to being the head MS coach, he will be working as the strength and conditioning coach for CCS and assisting the high school program. He had the opportunity to play college football at East Texas Baptist and Sam Houston State. He is a strong leader and has a love for discipleship, both of which are already evident in the football program.
