Stephen Novotny Executive Director At Cypress Christian School, we believe in providing as many opportunities as possible for our students to grow spiritually, academically and physically. Our athletic programs are designed to build both physical strength and personal character. Furthermore, keeping a high degree of physical fitness increases a student’s ability to concentrate in the classroom. On the field of athletic competition, many qualities are developed in an individual that are beneficial in all other areas of life. Such qualities include an appreciation for hard work, selfdiscipline, commitment to a common goal, loyalty, dependability, the ability to deal with loss and adversity, the ability to receive instruction, sacrifice and teamwork. In addition to all of these benefits, it is great fun to both participate in sports as an athlete and to watch as a parent or sports fan. In all of our athletic programs, our underlying goal is to honor the one who gave us our abilities. As it is written: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” –I Corinthians 10:31 We hope, this year, you will catch the “Warrior Spirit,” enjoy coming out and watching the games and share in the excitement of our athletic program. Go, Warriors!
Managing Athletic Director – Jeff Mudrow “Whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.” –Philippians 1:27b “Armor On – Built for Battle” is our theme for the coming year as both athletes and coaches prepare to meet new challenges, encounter tough competition, and stand for Jesus Christ. We cling to Ephesians 6:10-20; suiting up, knowing the battles will be tough, we stand ready, knowing that God is on our side. We hope you catch the excitement of this athletic season and join with us in one spirit and one mind as we strive together toward the common goals of athletic excellence and honoring our Savior in all we do.

Our Football Philosophy Football at Cypress Christian is much more than a competitive game that young men play. It is an intentional curriculum that uses football to build men. The intent is to produce men who will live with reckless abandon for Christ in all things at all times; men who will be the same in public as they are in private; men who will be great husbands and fathers in the future; and men who will learn to build deep, meaningful relationships that will be used to sharpen each other and hold each other accountable for a lifetime. Our success will not be measured in wins and losses, but in how well we close the gap between our potential and our performance as players and as men. In fact, it will probably take years to determine just how successful this season really will be.
Goal For every player to know Christ and to make Him known Purpose Statement The purpose of Cypress Christian Football is threefold: 1. Use football to teach principles and values that will result in the building of courageous men who will live sacrificial lives to the glory of God both on and off the field 2. Purposefully build deep, meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime 3. Develop each player to be the best football player he can be Theme Verses – FOOTBALL IS WORSHIP • Colossians 3:17 – “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” • Colossians 3:23-24 – “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Biblical Football is Competing • By the Power of God • According to the Word of God • For the Glory of God Excellence in Competition If we are going to worship through football, then we must pursue excellence on the field. We must strive to put the best team on the field with the goal of exceeding our potential as individuals. We will strive for excellence as coaches by developing the best offensive and defensive schemes to fit our personnel. Values Love, Faith, Humility, Perseverance, Commitment, Trust, Encouragement, Contentment, Courage and Servant Leadership

1. Called to Love • Our responsibility is to love: coaches must love the players and players must love each other. 2. Relationship Driven • Be intentional about building community, encouraging and motivating through love. • Players will be called to publicly encourage one another. 3. Servant Leadership • Captains will serve the team, and the varsity team will learn to serve the middle school team. 4. Humility – Be the First to Give All • Be faithful, available and teachable 5. Live Lives of Sacrifice • The player must die to himself for the sake of the team. • Being part of a team is being part of something bigger than ourselves. • Being part of a team means we give up rights and gain responsibilities.
6. Success Measured in How We “Close the Gap” • We are competing against our own best “selves” to close the gap between our potential and our performance. • We want a player’s best every day in every situation, but what God desires for us is greater than that—it is perfection. 7. Persevering with Eternal Perspective • Pursuing excellence on and off the field through Christ is a life-long journey, not a short-term goal. • Success is a road, not a destination. • You can always do one more: one more block, one more tackle, one more sprint. 8. Live with Passion • God wants us to give the maximum effort in all things, at all times. 9. Love to Lose • We love to win and want to win every game, but winning is only a by-product of true success; therefore, we are free to play our best because there is no fear of losing. • God’s victories often come through our defeats and, as a result, our character gets refined.

2017 Coach Profiles Jacob Spenn – Head Coach Coach Spenn is entering his tenth season as the head coach and his twelfth overall season at Cypress Christian. As head coach, he has led the Warriors to a 59 – 42 record, District Championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and seven playoff appearances. The return to Division III football in 2016 was very good for the Warriors, as they won nine straight before losing to eventual state champion Northland Christian. The Warriors advanced to the second round of the playoffs last year and are looking to make a deep playoff run this year. His passion is for mentoring and building godly men through the game of football. Everything the football program does is based on building men, not just physically, but spiritually as well. It will be years before the true success of the football team is known, but he is committed to being transformational in the lives of every player. Coach Spenn earned four collegiate letters at Taylor University (’95-’98) as a wide receiver and prior to that he was a standout wide receiver at Watseka High School in Illinois.

2017 SCHEDULE OVERVIEW
Close the Gap
The Warriors sent five players on to play college football from last year’s team, but still return a great core group for the 2017 season. The strength of the team will be in the skill positions on both sides of the ball. The defense will have the ability to play multiple coverages with a complete secondary back from last season. An increased ability to play man coverage will lead to more blitzing up front. On the offensive side of the ball, the Warriors will still be a triple option team but it will look very different. The tremendous depth and talent in the receiving core, along with Josh Holl back at quarterback will allow the Warriors to run a lot of run-pass options (RPO). The RPO gives the quarterback a lot of control on the field and provides for an exciting offense when it is run well. The Warriors are expected to compete for a district title and make a deep playoff run this season. 2017 MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL COACHES & TEAM Kelvin Mason – Head Coach Coach Mason is in his sixth season as the head middle school coach at CCS. The Warriors finished second in their division last season and have always been near the top of the district each season that Coach Mason has been the head coach. In 2015, they came up just short in the title game that had a final score of 65-54 in regulation. Prior to being named the head coach, Kelvin served as an assistant coach for two seasons. As an assistant he was the Defensive Coordinator for both the MS A and B football teams. Coach Mason is a graduate of Heritage Christian Academy, a private Christian School in Huntsville, Texas. Upon graduation he received a scholarship to attend Dallas Christian College to play college basketball. However, his passion for football led him to transfer to Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas, where he played three years of collegiate football. Coach Mason works full-time for CCS doing security and maintenance and coaches MS basketball for the Warriors.
