Stephen Novotny Executive Director At Cypress Christian School, we believe in providing as many opportunities as possible for our students to grow spiritually, academically and physically. Our athletic programs are designed to build both physical strength and personal character. Furthermore, keeping a high degree of physical fitness increases a student’s ability to concentrate in the classroom. On the field of athletic competition, many qualities are developed in an individual that are beneficial in all other areas of life. Such qualities include an appreciation for hard work, selfdiscipline, commitment to a common goal, loyalty, dependability, the ability to deal with loss and adversity, the ability to receive instruction, sacrifice and teamwork. In addition to all of these benefits, it is great fun to both participate in sports as an athlete and to watch as a parent or sports fan. In all of our athletic programs, our underlying goal is to honor the one who gave us our abilities. As it is written: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” I Corinthians 10:31 We hope this year you will catch the “Warrior Spirit,” enjoy coming out and watching the games, and share in the excitement of our athletic program. Go, Warriors!

Managing Athletic Director – Jeff Mudrow “Whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.” –Philippians 1:27b The athletes, coaches, faculty, staff and administration, as well as our school parents, have chosen this year to “Rise as One” when we compete. It is always our goal at Cypress Christian School to win with grace, lose with dignity and above all – glorify God! We hope you catch the excitement of this athletic season and join with us in one spirit and one mind as we strive together toward the common goals of athletic excellence and honoring our Savior in all we do.

Our Football Philosophy Football at Cypress Christian is much more than a competitive game that young men play. It is an intentional curriculum that uses football to build men. The intent is to produce men who will live with reckless abandon for Christ in all things at all times; men who will be the same in public as they are in private; men who will be great husbands and fathers in the future; and men who will learn to build deep, meaningful relationships that will be used to sharpen each other and hold each other accountable for a lifetime. Our success will not be measured in wins and losses, but in how well we close the gap between our potential and our performance as players and as men. In fact, it will probably take years to determine just how successful this season really will be.

Goal For every player to know Christ and to make Him known Purpose Statement The purpose of Cypress Christian Football is threefold: 1. Use football to teach principles and values that will result in the building of courageous men who will live sacrificial lives to the glory of God both on and off the field 2. Purposefully build deep, meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime 3. Develop each player to be the best football player he can be Theme Verses – FOOTBALL IS WORSHIP • Colossians 3:17 – “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” • Colossians 3:23-24 – “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Biblical Football is Competing • By the Power of God • According to the Word of God • For the Glory of God Excellence in Competition If we are going to worship through football, then we must pursue excellence on the field. We must strive to put the best team on the field with the goal of exceeding our potential as individuals. We will strive for excellence as coaches by developing the best offensive and defensive schemes to fit our personnel. Values Love, Faith, Humility, Perseverance, Commitment, Trust, Encouragement, Contentment, Courage and Servant Leadership

1. Called to Love • Our responsibility is to love: coaches must love the players and players must love each other. 2. Relationship Driven • Be intentional about building community, encouraging and motivating through love. • Players will be called to publicly encourage one another. 3. Servant Leadership • Captains will serve the team, and the varsity team will learn to serve the middle school team. 4. Humility – Be the First to Give All • Be faithful, available and teachable 5. Live Lives of Sacrifice • The player must die to himself for the sake of the team. • Being part of a team is being part of something bigger than ourselves. • Being part of a team means we give up rights and gain responsibilities.

6. Success Measured in How We “Close the Gap” • We are competing against our own best “selves” to close the gap between our potential and our performance. • We want a player’s best every day in every situation, but what God desires for us is greater than that—it is perfection. 7. Persevering with Eternal Perspective • Pursuing excellence on and off the field through Christ is a life-long journey, not a short-term goal. • Success is a road, not a destination. • You can always do one more: one more block, one more tackle, one more sprint. 8. Live with Passion • God wants us to give the maximum effort in all things, at all times. 9. Love to Lose • We love to win and want to win every game, but winning is only a by-product of true success; therefore, we are free to play our best because there is no fear of losing. • God’s victories often come through our defeats and, as a result, our character gets refined.

2016 Coach Profiles Jacob Spenn – Head Coach Coach Spenn is entering his ninth season as the head coach and his eleventh overall season at Cypress Christian. As head coach he has led the Warriors to a 49 – 40 record, District Championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and six playoff appearances. For the 2014 and 2015 season, the Warriors moved up to division II football, but with most recent alignment, will return to division III. His passion is for mentoring and building Godly men through the game of football. Everything the football program does is based on building men, not just physically but spiritually as well. It will be years before the true success of the football team is known but he is committed to being transformational in the lives of every player. Coach Spenn played football collegiately at Taylor University (’95-’98) as a wide receiver, and prior to that, he was a standout wide receiver at Watseka High School in Illinois.

Tim Honeycutt Offensive Coordinator Quarterbacks

Chris Laidlaw Defensive Coordinator Linebackers

Tom Nugent Running Backs

This is Coach Honeycutt’s ninth season at Cypress Christian. He once again coordinates the offense and works with the quarterbacks. He brings some new wrinkles to the offense as Josh Holl takes over for the graduating two-year starter, Pete Achterkirch. Tim played high school football for Dayton.

Coach Laidlaw is entering his seventh season at Cypress Christian. He has 20 years of coaching experience at the high school and collegiate levels along with college playing experience. His defenses have been a cornerstone of our program, and this year, it looks like we will have an exceptional group on that side of the ball. In addition to his role as the coordinator, he works directly with the linebackers.

This is Coach Nugent’s sixth season at Cypress Christian as both a coach and a teacher. He has over 15 years of football coaching experience. He continues to work with the offensive side of the ball and coaches the running backs as we expect to have a dominate ground game behind a great offensive line.

Coach Spenn on Tim: He brings a passion and excitement for the game of football to the field every day. He has a great way of connecting with the kids and seeing life from their perspective. This is not just true for the high school players because nearly every student at our school knows his name.

Coach Spenn on Chris: He is great at breaking down our opponent’s offense and putting together a defensive plan that is sound against anything they might run. Chris is always looking to maximize the potential in every player and has a heart for being transformational in the lives of our players.

Coach Spenn on Tom: I started my coaching career with Tom over 15 years ago, and he has been a good friend ever since. He has a great passion for coaching and building up students. The students love being around him and playing for him.

2016 Coach Profiles

Scott Paulsen Offensive and Defensive Line

Rashaad Leaks Defensive Line

Darryl Phipps Defensive Backs

Kevin Orrick Offensive Line

Coach Paulsen is in his third season of working with our offensive and defensive line. He had a standout high school career in Nebraska and has quickly picked up the coaching aspect. He is also our strength and conditioning coach during the season.

Coach Leaks returns for his third season to work with the defensive line. He played high school football in Texas before playing for Louisville and eventually a couple of seasons in the NFL as a defensive lineman. He spent two seasons coaching at a 5A public school and now loves coaching in a Christian environment.

Coach Phipps has 40 years of high school coaching experience and returns to Cypress Christian for his third season. He spent most of his time in the Houston Independent School District and was the head coach at three different 4A programs during that time. He coaches the defensive backs and motivates the entire team and coaching staff.

Coach Orrick has more than 10 years of high school coaching experience at the 5A public school level. He returns for his second season as the offensive line coach. There is no question that we have improved under his direction. His love and knowledge of the offensive line certainly makes us a better football team.

Coach Spenn on Scott: He pays great attention to detail and was a standout athlete that understands the importance of the little things. He has a passion for the game that is contagious and brings out the best in our team.

Coach Spenn on Rashaad: He has a great heart for coaching and a great understanding, in large part as a result of his own playing experience, for the impact that a coach can have in the lives of their players.

Coach Spenn on Darryl: Darryl has a great way of motivating his players and is always future focused. His positive attitude is contagious. His love for the players is evident year round as he’s always at offseason workouts. He has had a great impact on our staff through both his knowledge of the game and his ability to coach it.

Coach Spenn on Kevin: I am very excited that Kevin is continuing to coach with us even after Conner graduated. Coaching the offensive line is critical to any great football team and Kevin does it the right way.

2016 SCHEDULE OVERVIEW

Close the Gap

The Warriors will return to division III football after the latest TAPPS realignment. The district schedule will return to the traditional opponents that the Warriors have had over the history of the football program. There are two new teams moving into 11-man football at Pasadena First Baptist and Sugarland Logos Prep. Pasadena had a great 6-man team last year so they are expected to provide a tough challenge. Northland Christian also moved down and should prove to be the toughest team on the schedule after advancing to the final four of division II last season. The Warriors should certainly be in a place to compete for a district title this season. The Warriors are returning all but one offensive lineman from last season and should be very good in the trenches. With a new quarterback, the offense will look a little different but the triple option will still be a big weapon. The defense will also be very good up front and has a solid returning core of players at linebacker and in the secondary. If a few young players can step up, the Warriors will be in a great position to make a playoff run for the first time in a couple of seasons. Team Bryan Brazos Christian Pasadena First Baptist Lutheran North Beaumont Legacy Christian Magnolia Legacy Bay Area Christian Rosehill Christian The Woodlands Christian Sugar Land Logo Prep Northland Christian

2016 MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL COACHES & TEAM Kelvin Mason Head Coach Biography: Coach Mason is in his fifth season as the head middle school coach at CCS. The Warriors won their division last year but lost in the conference championship game. The final score was 65-54 in regulation. Prior to being named the head coach, Kelvin served as an assistant coach for two seasons. As an assistant he was the Defensive Coordinator for both the MS A and B football teams. Coach Mason is a graduate of Heritage Christian Academy, a private Christian School in Huntsville, Texas. Upon graduation he received a scholarship to attend Dallas Christian College and play college basketball. However, his passion for football led him to transfer to Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas, where he played three years of collegiate football. Coach Mason works full time for CCS doing security and maintenance and also coaches MS basketball for the Warriors. Philosophy: Coach Mason loves teaching his players to enjoy the sport and have fun. Kelvin believes giving his players the confidence they need to be more than an overcomer through any adversity is the key ingredient for success.
