Hope and Purpose in Christ
Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch woman famous for hiding Jews from the Nazis during World War II, was fond of saying, “There is no pit so deep, that God’s love is not deeper still.” These were originally the words of her sister Betsie, spoken while they were in the Ravensbruck Nazi concentration camp during World War II. Betsie ten Boom would not make it out of that concentration camp alive, but Corrie would, and she would tell their story. One part of their extraordinary experience is that in the midst of those darkest of times, Betsie ten Boom found God’s love.

Just a few years after the war was over, Corrie was in Germany giving talks on her war experience. At the end of one of those talks, a former Nazi guard at Ravensbruck approached her and asked for forgiveness. It’s one thing to speak of God’s love for us, but quite another to be asked to forgive one who was cruel and who contributed to the death of a beloved sister. As she wrote in her book “Tramp for the Lord,” Corrie struggled – battling her feelings, not wanting to forgive – yet she prayed for God to help her move past her hatred, and she told her former captor that she would forgive him. She said, “For a long moment we grasped each other’s hands, the former guard and the former prisoner. I had never known God’s love so intensely as I did then.” It seems that in the middle of confronting personal pain and hatred, Corrie ten Boom also found God’s love.
Through it all, we are reminded to keep our eyes on the ultimate provider of lasting comfort, peace and joy – the Lord Jesus Christ.
It’s somewhat paradoxical that in the course of going through some of the most trying of conditions and human suffering, Corrie and Betsie ten Boom found love, hope and joy. In contrast, and also paradoxically, it is not uncommon to hear of those with seeming great luxury and comfort in their lives who are most miserable. Sometimes trials and difficulties allow us to see realities that are deeper than the circumstances being experienced. Perceiving these deeper realities – truths more enduring than the events which pass in time – seems to also produce a deep sense of joy. It stands to reason that God may allow difficult times in our lives precisely because He knows those things can bring about greater good, and indeed may be necessary for our greatest good.

At CCS we train children to have a hope in Christ and a purpose that transcends the momentary circumstance of poverty or prosperity, peace or difficulty, health or sickness. It is power for life and courage in the face of death. The CCS community has experienced its share of difficult times affecting the lives of individuals and families. The ten Booms suffered in circumstances more difficult than most of us could imagine in our comfortable lives today. Yet they – and we – also experienced joy and a profound sense of God’s love. Perhaps that is why James once said, “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials….” (James 1:2) While good things in life should be pursued and enjoyed, it is wise to remember that hard times may indeed be the doorway to even greater good and greater joy. Through it all, we are reminded to keep our eyes on the ultimate provider of lasting comfort, peace and joy – the Lord Jesus Christ. Mr. Stephen Novotny Executive Director

Best Day Ever! “My nerves were quickly calmed on my son’s first day of school with the ‘family-feel’ of the campus and the sweet greetings from the teachers and staff. My son’s words for his first day were ‘best day ever’ which gave me such peace that we had chosen the right school for him. I’ve been overwhelmed with happiness during his first few days. My heart melted when Connor came home and told me his Bible verse. I felt like after one day I got a glimpse of the man he will grow to be. To see Mr. White and Mr. Novotny guiding carpool traffic (in their dress clothes, in the heat) along with the helpful staff who assist children in and out of cars, plus the ‘boo-hoo’ party, waves and personal greetings - all these small things made a big impression on me. I knew my son was in safe, godly hands. We’re excited to watch Connor grow academically and spiritually in the coming year, and we’re excited to be part of the CCS family!”

This year’s Blue and White Night was the largest back-to-school event in school history. Students and their families, employees and alumni enjoyed a variety of food under the big top. Representatives from school organizations were on hand to answer questions and distribute information about the new school year. The program was held in the football stadium and included a time of praise and worship with the Robbie Seay Band (RobbieSeayBand.com). Other event highlights included a drama skit, the introduction of fall sports teams, the presentation of 2013-2014 championship banners, the presentation of 2013-2014 state championship rings to the girls’ track and field team and the boys’ varsity baseball team, and special messages and prayer from Board President Chad Braun and Executive Director Stephen Novotny. Our Warrior cheerleaders did a great job of getting the year started with lots of Warrior spirit. Thanks to the Floyd family and Amerisource Funding (AmerisourceFunding.com) for sponsoring the event. Thanks also to the Robbie Seay Band, to the CCS staff and faculty, volunteers and everyone who attended to help us dedicate the school year to the Lord. Go, Warriors!

The 2014 Week of the Warriors was a huge success. The event was the culmination of months of thoughtful preparation. Thanks to the entire WOW Committee chaired by CCS parent Stephanie Petru for their tireless work to make the event successful. Thanks to our underwriters, sponsors, donors, volunteers and participants for their generosity. Money raised benefits the Warrior Fund (page 8) allowing for campus projects and classroom improvements that tuition dollars alone do not cover. WOW Kick-Off Party The WOW Kick-Off Party was held under the stars at the Houston Oaks Country Club and was an evening of Godhonoring fun and excitement. Guests were welcomed under the covered patio where blue-check table cloths and fresh sunflowers greeted them for a cool, fall night of outdoor fun and games. Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Tarrantino were the winners
of the diamond dig, and balloon pops guaranteed each winner a minimum of a $25 gift, with 200 guests winning fabulous prizes. The live auction began with offerings of exotic hunting trips, sought-after graduation seats, carpool skip passes, magnificent vacations and sporting events. The big-board auction kept the audience on their toes outbidding one another on fishing trips, summer camps and endless rounds of golf. The evening wrapped up with dessert at the fire pit as Christian artists The Afters performed an acoustic set. Online Auction Also during the Week of the Warriors, CCS held an online auction to benefit the Warrior Fund. Thanks to the many volunteers and donors who gave so generously of their time and treasures. Families and friends of CCS enjoyed outbidding each other – all to benefit CCS students.

Duke Talent Identification Program Qualifiers
Academics Middle school students are working hard and achieving great academic success. This year over 50 percent of the seventh grade class qualified to participate in the highly-selective, national Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) which recognizes outstanding performance in at least one specified area on standardized tests such as the Terra Nova administered in the spring at CCS. We are so thankful for this opportunity that has been presented to these students based on academic ability. Last spring our National Junior Honor Society inducted 21 students into this service organization that recognizes students for their academic and leadership qualities. Among our eighth graders, approximately 50 percent will successfully complete both Algebra I and Spanish I this year, thereby allowing for more advanced classes during their high school careers. CCS students in grades six through eight are accepting the challenge to prepare themselves for what lies ahead in school.
Biblical Values The most inspiring aspect of working each day with these young scholars is the glimpse of steps toward spiritual maturity. Sixth grade teacher Marilyn York reflects on her students this year: “I have seen students really take the initiative to make new students feel welcome and included.” Stepping away from self and taking action that considers another is the CCS way. “My seventh graders are inquisitive and ask deep questions about the Bible,” notes middle school Bible teacher Rachael Lechman. Seeking God’s Word is a hallmark of wisdom. Middle school Bible teacher Craig Cleveland reports, “Since the start of school I have seen growth in my seventh grade boys in how they respect God’s Word, how they treat each other and how they try to live out what they’ve learned in Bible class. I am impressed by all the boys in my class and the tender hearts they have toward the things of God.” Pouring God’s Word into the lives of these young men will mean strong families for the next generation.

Recess Elementary students are enjoying their new playground equipment. After-School Science Club Mrs. Miller’s elementary After-School Science Club explored God’s amazing world by conducting experiments in physical and chemical science. Students enjoyed learning about bases and acids using cabbage juice as the control substance. They also had lots of fun wearing lab coats and goggles.

Microscopes Reveal God’s Wonders The seventh grade Life Science class began their study of the cell by learning about the invention of the microscope. Students were then able to experience the wonders of God’s world by looking through microscopes at different plant, animal and protist slides.
Chemistry At the beginning of each school year, science teacher Lisa Longridge tells her students that science is mankind’s attempt to explain what God has created. She says, “Even with the volumes of information that have been compiled in the past, we only have a glimpse of the intricacies and details of creation.” She enjoys helping her students conduct experiments as part of the learning process. Students in the lab study elements, compounds and mixtures. Two elements (magnesium and oxygen) were combined to form a compound – magnesium oxide. Dr. Longridge said, “The students were shocked at how bright the magnesium burned. Most of them had never seen a roadside flare, but could relate it to fireworks.”

Middle School Journalism is Fun and Creative By Samantha Swan, 8th grade 2014 National Honor Society Induction Congratulations to the newest NHS members. Honor Society Pledge: I pledge myself always to seek the light of Truth as found in God’s Word, to hold scholarly habits, to engage in worthy service to His Kingdom and to lead forward in all things that shall advance the welfare of the school and my Christian life. As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good servants of the manifold grace of God. I Peter 4:10 Middle school journalism is an energetic elective class for eighth grade students. Through journal entries, CCS news reports and creative writing, the students learn how to accurately express themselves and report on life as a CCS middle schooler. Middle School Principal Iva Nell Rhea shared her thoughts about this new elective option: “This is a great opportunity that helps students build a foundation for high school. These students have the privilege of writing about the things happening within their age group that they witness firsthand.”
Second Graders Share Published Creations Second graders completed a fun writing project about Mrs. Jansson’s class pet, “Princess the Turtle.” The students worked very hard to plan, draft, revise, edit and publish their stories. Afterward, the students visited the kindergarten classes where they had the opportunity to proudly share their published creations with their kindergarten buddies. Veterans Day Speech Excerpt from “What the Flag Means to Me” by CCS Fifth Grade Student AJ McKnight “…Old Glory, our flag, means so much more to me than woven fabric, us landing on the moon, or a rich nation. To me, she means blood shed from veterans we should take time to remember and thank. The flag also means freedom for me to worship my Lord, God, in this land He’s blessed… and to give this speech. Until the day my King, Jesus Christ, calls me home to heaven, I will remember Old Glory and what she truly means to me. Thank you, America. Thank you, veterans. Thank you, God….”
Ambassador Council Sixty students in grades 6-12 were selected for this year’s Ambassador Council. This service organization is tasked with serving and supporting the admissions and advancement offices of CCS. In the fall, they helped with Blue & White Night, homecoming, prospective student previews, and various other special events. “The CCS Ambassador Council is such a blessing,” says Admissions Director Angie Ramirez. “I love investing in these wonderful students who reflect the heart of our school. They inspire me!” May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Community Helpers Can you guess which kindergarten teacher is hiding underneath all of the fire-fighter gear shown in the photo? (Hint: See page 6)
CCS kindergarteners visited Houston Fire Department Fire Station #96 as part of their “Community Helpers” unit, where they learned all about how fire fighters and medics live and work when they are on duty. Students really enjoyed spraying the fire hose and seeing the inside of an ambulance. As part of this unit, kindergarteners learned about different community helper jobs by reading books and welcoming three special speakers to their classrooms. Kindergarten parent Mr. Trey Cellmer talked about his role as a fire fighter (shown with fire hose and with ambulance), and kindergarten parent Lieutenant Earl Dean with the Harris County Sheriff’s Department shared his job responsibilities. In addition, CCS’s own Nurse Robin Brown explained how she helps our students when they are sick. She also gave the students some tips on how to stay healthy. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus. Colossians 3:17 Community College Fair Both middle school and high school students have the opportunity to take advanced courses at CCS to prepare for college. High school students attended a community college fair in the fall with representatives from more than 100 colleges in attendance. How blessed is the person who finds wisdom and who gains understanding. Proverbs 3:13 Victorious Elementary Soccer Season CCS athletes in grades K-5 enjoyed a victorious soccer season through the West Houston Christian Sports Association. The philosophy of the league is to promote understanding of the game, as well as sportsmanship and Christian fellowship. A joyful heart makes a cheerful face… Proverbs 15:13

Homecoming 2014 CCS is grateful to everyone who made our 2014 Homecoming so much fun. Activities during the week included crazy dress-up days, intriguing contests, the vote for homecoming court, the annual parade and pep rally, and the debut of the new CCS drumline. The evening events included a tailgate party, the presentation of the homecoming court, the crowning of king and queen, the return of CCS alumni (see page 36) and an exciting win as the Warriors dominated the field to soundly defeat the John Cooper Dragons. Congratulations to the 2014 homecoming court and king and queen. (See pages 24 and 25 for more homecoming pictures.)
Drumline The CCS drumline made its debut during the 2014 homecoming festivities. The students worked with CCS choir director Luke Kirkwood and local drum expert Steve Allison for many weeks leading up to their premiere. They enjoyed performing at football games and various school events throughout the fall. “We look forward to ‘drumming up’ school spirit at future events,” said Mr. Kirkwood. Thank You! God is Welcome Here
Prayer Prayer is an important part of the educational process at CCS. Students take part in prayer throughout the school day, and they are faithful to pray before and after games, performances and competitions. Also, each year, students organize the “See You at the Pole� prayer event for students, employees, and families. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12 Bible Class The student schedule includes Bible class each day. The CCS goal is for each student to be able to clearly articulate their beliefs and understand the arguments others may bring against them and their faith. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the Word of Truth. II Timothy 2:15

Faculty Teachers pour into the lives of their students so that in every subject, students learn content and skills that will prepare them for life. A deeper love and understanding of God’s Word is also instilled. A wonderful example is Mrs. Teague’s biology class. The students study basic chemistry, cells and cell processes, heredity and genetics. The sanctity of life is an important focal point of this unit. Among their activities, students extract DNA of various plants, predict the inheritance patterns of sample families, build pedigree charts to track inherited traits through several generations, and research different genetic disorders. Throughout the unit, Mrs. Teague reminds her students that every human life is divinely planned, purposed and valuable. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:13-16
Junior Blessing The Junior Blessing Ceremony is a CCS tradition and is modeled after the blessings given to children throughout the Old Testament. During the ceremony, family members speak a blessing over their student and give him/her a class ring or other token as a reminder of this blessing. The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26 Senior Retreat Each year, seniors participate in a retreat designed to build their confidence and to more closely bond with their classmates. The challenge courses allow them to partner with a classmate to solve problems and experience trust on a new level, relying on another’s strength while building their own. What a valuable life lesson for these students who will partner with fellow Christians throughout their lives to fulfill God’s plan. As for God, His way is perfect: The Lord’s Word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in Him. For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? II Samuel 22:31-32

Daily Pledges CCS students in all grades start each day with pledges to the American flag, the Texas flag, the Christian flag and the Bible. Students Recite Pledge on KSBJ Radio Station CCS students recited the Pledge of Allegiance on KSBJ Christian radio station each day during the week of Sept. 8-12, 2014. Veterans Day 2014
CCS paid tribute to the service and sacrifice of members of all branches of the U.S. military on Veterans Day 2014. Program highlights included the presentation of colors by members of Boy Scout Troop 846, an essay read by fifth grader Austin McKnight titled “What the Flag Means to Me,” (see page 15) and a drama presentation by the sixth grade musical theater class. Under the direction of choir director Luke Kirkwood, the secondary and fourth grade choirs performed moving renditions of patriotic favorites while the audience watched the “Roll of Honor” slide show of CCS family veterans. CCS parent, board member and Marine veteran Michael Slabic, Jr. inspired and challenged students and visitors with his call to honor the legacy of those who have gone before us. Slabic pointed out that the motivating factor in the sacrifice of veterans – love – reflects the example set by the Lord Jesus when he laid down his life for all mankind on the cross at Calvary (I John 3:16) “so that we would have the opportunity to be free from the destiny that our sins have earned us.” Just as God created mankind in his own image, He gave us the capacity to put others ahead of ourselves. As Slabic thanked the veterans for their service, sacrifice and example, he said: “It is right to protect our freedom and the American way of life, and to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. Thank
you for simply doing what is right. You are honorable and deserving of great praise.” Slabic said: “I appreciate that the mascot of Cypress Christian is a warrior. The warrior is one who fights. A formidable warrior is one who is not only willing, but one who also prepares. Our preparation for battle certainly includes training, learning and developing our skills, but a Christian warrior is going to start with preparing his heart. We must study God’s Word and be equipped with Truth and righteousness.” In closing, he challenged the students: “How will you wholly and sacrificially serve? How will you honor the legacy of those who stepped up before you? Will today be a one-time event where we celebrate our heroes, or can it also be a call to action?” Executive Director Stephen Novotny spoke on behalf of CCS when he said: “Thank you to the countless men and women who have fought for us and protected us. This service never comes without a price, and so by saying ‘thank you’ today we hope to honor you and the service you have given.” Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friend. CCS LAUNCHES Capital Campaign WITH WORKING GOAL OF $3.3 Million Campaign Dollars Raised to Date:

In the spring of 2014, Cypress Christian leadership retained the J.F. Smith Group – an independent fund-raising firm – to conduct a feasibility study to determine if the school’s constituency would support several areas of opportunity to enhance the school. The findings showed that the majority enthusiastically supports the projects for the future and are in agreement with their necessity and value. Investment opportunities were ranked according to what our constituents felt were most important, with the campus life center and gym emerging as the
first priority. Thus, we have launched the Advancing Excellence capital campaign with a working goal of $3,300,000. The campaign will enable us to eliminate the scheduling conflicts we currently face with our gymnasium, as well as accommodate additional events such as academic and speech meets, choir performances, fine arts programs, chapels, PE classes, parent meetings, special events, and athletic activities for elementary, middle school and high school student-athletes. This project will impact every student and family at Cypress Christian School. The Advancing Excellence campaign is a wise investment for the future and for the success of our young leaders as we prepare them for a life of achievement.

Character traits such as commitment, discipline, sacrifice, perseverance, determination and integrity are integral components of competitive sports, fine arts programs and academic competitions. In addition to housing a gym for athletic practices and other co-curricular events, this facility will serve as a welcome center for visitors and alumni, and as a gathering place for students, close to both a new spirit store location and a food concessions area for sports events. To be built on the east side of the property, a campus life center will provide: • Space for academic competitions, fine arts performances and other co-curricular activities • A competition basketball and volleyball court with two full-size practice courts and locker facilities • Seating for at least 600 spectators
• Offices for school administration, welcome center, admissions and the spirit store • A multi-purpose facility for use in assemblies and chapel, eliminating the scheduling conflicts we currently face A key advantage to having a second gym on campus is that the elementary school will have access to rainy-day recess and indoor physical education facilities. Additionally, several site improvements are also incorporated in this project, including new parking lots, drives and sidewalks. “Our goal as parents is to raise children who become independent of us and completely dependent upon God. Board of Directors Pledge 100% Participation The Board of Directors, after assessing school needs over the last several years, praying for wisdom, evaluating the best use of our resources, and reviewing the results of the school’s feasibility study, approved a capital campaign to fund the construction of a central campus life center and gym. They further affirmed their support of the campaign by pledging 100 percent participation. Faculty and Staff Reach 100% Participation Every full-time faculty and staff member is participating in our Advancing Excellence Capital Campaign. Together as an employee team, $168,000 in cash and pledges have been given to help build the new campus life center and gym for our students.

FOOTBALL Middle School Teams The middle school football teams concluded the 2014 season with the A team finishing 5-3 and second in the south division of the district, and the B team finishing 4-4. Both teams improved throughout the year and had exciting endings to many of their games. It will be exciting to watch all of them grow and improve as football players in the years to come. Varsity Finishes First Season in Division II The CCS varsity football team ended the season with a 3-7 record and a fifth place finish in their new Division II district. Those numbers do not reflect the tremendous effort that was given on the field this season. Coach Spenn had this to say about the season: “Moving to the new district was like moving from Conference USA to the SEC. Each week brought a tough, seasoned opponent, and there were no easy games. However, this year’s varsity team met the challenge. It was filled with servant leaders, unselfish players, deep relationships, and

a determination to show everyone that we could compete with the 4A schools. I am thankful that the players were listening and really believed in our goal of building courageous men who will live sacrificial lives to the glory of God both on and off the field. We played a different game than most of our opponents, and we were successful. How you win and lose says far more about your character than the number of wins and losses you have. Great teams do not always have great records, and teams with great records are not always great teams. Middle School Volleyball Program Expands and Places at Top The middle school volleyball program saw much growth both in numbers and skill level. The C team was added this year, and even though this team was very young and new to a truly competitive venue, they improved with each game. The A and B teams finished at the top of their game with the A team finishing second in the district tournament and the B team earning first place.
Successful Inaugural Year for Middle School Cross Country Team The middle school cross country team, in its inaugural season, worked hard and learned a lot. Coach Bretz trained 20 girls and boys from mid-August through mid-October, competing in six meets with athletes medaling in several meets. The girls’ team finished second in the NHAL District Meet and the boys’ team finished fourth. Coach Bretz said: “I am proud of their accomplishments, and I am inspired by their commitment and dedication to be out at practice every day in the heat – working hard, running stands, running around the school, and completing many timed laps around the track. Next year’s team will have big shoes to fill.”
Lady Warriors Finish Season with Determination The Lady Warriors varsity volleyball team finished their season during the district tournament playoffs. The team worked diligently to meet their goals of One Purpose, One Team, One Warrior. Coach Towle said, “We wanted to build an atmosphere based on giving it our all by supporting our teammates through hard work, leadership and performance.” Looking back on the season, she said, “I am very proud of how our players stepped up to meet the challenges presented to them and how they finished out their season with determination.”

Lady Warriors Cross Country Team Competes at State The Lady Warriors varsity cross country team competed at the TAPPS State Meet with Korey Cyr taking 25 seconds off of her best time of the season. Brooklyn Bretz finished close behind. Sydney Crofton was injured and was not able to compete, but she was a great support to her teammates. The girls had a good season and remained committed, determined and disciplined as they ran at 5:45 a.m. three days a week, plus afternoon practices and Saturday meets.

Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders Camp Varsity and middle school cheerleaders attended the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders cheer camp at Houston Baptist University to learn cheers, chants, dances and stunts. Each team brought home a spirit stick as well as a third place award for their performance on the last day. Both squads were able to improve their cheerleading skills and bond more closely as a team. Events and Games Warrior cheerleaders kept the crowd cheering at games and events throughout the fall including Blue & White Night and homecoming.
Pep Rallies Varsity cheerleaders hosted an “80’s” themed pep rally for high school athletes. Middle school cheerleaders hosted a “Super Hero” pep rally for their teams. Community Service Varsity cheerleaders enjoyed serving at Kids Meals Houston – Texas’ only meals-on-wheels service for children. They helped prepare more than 2,000 sandwiches to be delivered to children in need. CCS parent and cheer coach Kathy Braun loved being able to see the cheerleaders serve
and have fun in the process. She said, “They lived out Ephesians 6:7 ‘Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord...’ ” Jr. Pep Squad More than 90 girls in grades K-5 participated in the Fall 2014 Junior Pep Squad session. Cheer coach Kathy Braun said: “The cheerleaders look forward to spending time with the elementary girls every year. They consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to befriend these young Warriors. Great job, cheerleaders.”

A Real Crowd-Pleaser The Cypress Christian School Fine Arts Department production of “Bye Bye Birdie” received rave reviews. Everyone who attended the musical, which was held at Playhouse 1960, thoroughly enjoyed the show. From the fun and authentic 1950’s-style costumes, to the incredible singing and vivacious dancing, all the way down to the characters the students created – the show was a highlight that will be talked about all year. Students around campus who saw the show are still quoting the lines and singing the songs.
“I am so proud of the cast and crew for all of their hard work. Save for one performance, I was able to sit in the audience and enjoy the show. Students ran the entire show, which is my goal for these students – to give them the tools to take ownership of their production, and therefore be able to truly enjoy its success. I love each and every one of these students as if they were my own, and seeing them shine on the stage and backstage made every minute of hard work worth it,” says Drama Director Blythe Kirkwood. Thank you to Playhouse 1960 and its Board of Directors for hosting the performance. CCS would also like to thank the parents and volunteers who helped with everything from load-in to strike, concessions, box office, ushering, getting food for the cast and crew and more. Finally, thank you to CCS Choir Director Luke Kirkwood for directing the music for the production. 30

Student Artwork Ranked # 1 in State and #11 in Nation via Artsonia Online Art Museum Since the fall of 2013, 10,044 art lovers have visited the Cypress Christian page of Artsonia.com where secondary student artwork is displayed. This site also helps CCS raise funds for art supplies as the company donates 20% of every purchase of art keepsakes to the CCS art program. Twenty-eight CCS students have received awards for their artwork through Artsonia. Senior Precious Ademola was one of the recent finalists for Artist of the Week. Cypress Christian School middle school art is ranked #6 in the state and high school art is ranked #1 in the state and #11 in the nation for art published (over 3,000 works). Bible and Art Students Create Artwork Based on Scripture Seventh and eighth grade BART (Bible and art) students worked on their “Trees of Life” and “Noah’s Ark” projects in the fall. They used recyclable materials using collage and layering techniques for their creation process, telling their stories through Scripture, words and symbolic interpretation.
Choir Fall Choir Concert The Warrior Choir hosted their fall concert in October. The evening began with a combined performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” which was followed by a solo performance by Caitlyn McCreary singing “Above All.” Dang Pham accompanied her from the piano. In addition, Caylie Howard sang a solo version of “Oceans.” The middle school and high school choirs each sang three songs that were well received by the audience of more than 150 parents, teachers, friends and family members.
Fifth Graders Sing with Secondary Warrior Choir More than 70 students helped kick off Elementary Night at Warrior Stadium on Oct. 24, 2014. Fifth graders sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” together with the secondary Warrior choir at the varsity football game. The students worked hard to learn and memorize the song with music teacher and choir director Luke Kirkwood who said: “I am so proud of these young musicians. I am really looking forward to their future performances.”

The first day of school, I was welcomed and felt at home. Halfway through the first day, I knew it was the right decision to attend CCS.
CCS provides a peaceful, friendly and Christian environment which helps students reach their potential academically and spiritually.
I love Cypress Christian because everyone knows each other, and we are like a big family.
What I love the most about CCS is the community. I am thankful that I have been able to confide in teachers and administrators through some tough times in my life.
I like CCS because the people make me feel welcome and make me smile. The size of our school is great for creating longlasting friendships. I have friends who love me and teachers who really care about my education. They have helped me with my walk with Christ. I’m not leaving CCS. Well, not until college, that is. I love CCS because I feel protected and feel at home, and I know I am receiving a great education in a godly atmosphere. I love that the teachers at CCS support me and push me to be my best. I like how the coaches are not concerned about winning – but about how you grow as a man or woman.

I like CCS because I have built relationships that revolve around God. Amazing teachers and friends, along with strong academics, is what makes CCS special and unique to me. Teachers are very approachable. They strongly encourage their students to reach out to them with questions and concerns. That, along with the small class size, creates an environment where students have every opportunity to succeed. Socially, I know that the friendships formed will most definitely last a lifetime. CCS is a great school because we are allowed to freely express our faith, and CCS is preparing me to face the world. I am thankful I have been taught what it means to be a Warrior for Christ.

CCS alumni were welcomed home by friends, family members, former teachers, former coaches and Alumni Liaison Lynnette Anderson at Homecoming 2014 on Friday, Oct. 3. Graduates received free soft drinks and snacks at the alumni table, and were given an opportunity to win prizes including a grand prize worth $100. Congratulations to the alumni who won gift cards to Starbucks, Whataburger, Backyard Grill, Academy, Walmart, Applebee’s and more. Congratulations to Lauren Echols (‘13) who won the Party Pack grand prize. Alumni in attendance: Class of ‘98: David Mitchell, Phillip Praesel, Brent Reeves, Nathan White and Josh Wilkinson; Class of ‘99: Daniel Gertson, Bryan Gibbs, Leslie Gonzales LaRubbio, Rachael Lechman, Byron Moore, Michael Patterson, Sarah Thompson Becker, Todd Ulrich and Sarah Wilkinson Ganger; Class of ‘02: Holly Van Dyke Gibbs; Class of ‘06: Charity White. The group enjoyed a delicious meal from their favorite Mexican food restaurant, Del Pueblo, which is owned by alumni parent Sylvia Rincon, and enjoyed a scrumptious dessert prepared by Michelle Van Rieg Stanton (‘08) who will be operating a new bakery in the spring of 2015. Graduates participated in “class time” with Mr. J which included telling the group about their family, career, and ministry and sharing some of their favorite memories with Mr. J. Before heading home, they browsed through yearbooks and photos taken during their years on the CCS campus and posed for new pictures. Calvin Peter was born at 6:30 a.m. and weighed 5 pounds, 13 ounces and measured 19 inches. Kate was born at 6:50 a.m., and weighed 5 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 19 inches. Audrey (2 years old) loves her baby brother and sister. 14. David West (’03) and wife, Casey, are happy to announce that Oliver Jay West was born on June 26, 2014, at 6:55 p.m. in Austin, Texas. He weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 21.5 inches. David says, “Casey and Oliver are doing great, and she and I are continuing to learn what it means to be parents.” 15. Andrew Wynans (’03) and wife, Lindsey, are pleased to announce the birth of Ruby Noel Wynans born on October 2, 2014, at 3:30 p.m. in Nashville, Tennessee. She weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces and measured 19 inches. 16. Lauren Riley Hamlin (‘05): In the spring of Lauren’s senior year at CCS, she was diagnosed with leukemia. Lauren is now healed, married to Clay Hamlin, and the mother of newborn Samuel Thomas Hamlin. She recently emailed this powerful testimony: “As I reflect on my life, I am constantly astounded at the overwhelming goodness of our God. March of 2015 will be ten years since I was diagnosed with leukemia (still in remission! Thank You, Father!). Due to the chemotherapy, I was not sure if I would be able to have any children. Ever since I held my little brother in my arms when he was a baby, all I have ever wanted to be was a mom. So, I have spent countless hours praying for the blessing of children. My heart connected so deeply with Hannah from the Bible. 1 Samuel 1:20 states, ‘...in due time she gave birth to a son, whom she named Samuel, “because I asked Adonai for him.”’ That page of my Bible is tear-stained from all the times I asked the Lord for a child. On May 19, 2014, at 9:38 p.m., our treasured Samuel Thomas was born. He weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces. Motherhood is such an honor and a privilege. Every morning, I wake up to his precious face and praise the Lord for His merciful goodness.” 17. Randy Deputy (‘06) graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in May 2014. He relocated to Houston and is working to become licensed to practice law in the state of Texas. 18. Didier Kollo (‘06) and Belkis Medendorp Kollo (‘07) are excited to be parents. Justin-John Kollo was born on July 25, 2014, at 12:12 p.m. weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces and measuring 20.67 inches. Didier and Belkis were privileged to have Didier’s mother with them from Cameroon, Africa, to help them with their newborn when they returned to work. Didier works for Verizon and Belkis works for a mortgage company in Little Rock, Arkansas. They are both still in school. Belkis has one year left to earn a degree in health science promotion. Didier hopes to finish in May earning a degree in engineering. 19. Sarah Mathewes (‘06) was hired as a prekindergarten level 4 teacher at Holy Trinity Episcopal School. She passed her certification test and has a probationary certificate to teach this year. In May 2015, she will take her exit test and ESL certification test to be fully certified.

He currently serves as interim pastor at Community Christian Reformed Church in Kitchener, Ontario. 21. Jessica Van Rieg Gates (‘06) and husband, Rusty, moved back to Houston. Jessica accepted a teaching position at Cypress Springs High School. Before moving from Colorado, Rusty was ordained by their pastor who married them in October 2013. Rusty is employed with Vanderbloemen Search Group.

22. Lindsay Adam Santos (‘08) is an R.N. and runs an operating room at the Mays Urology Clinic of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in the Houston medical center. Patients under her care are battling various forms of cancer including bladder, kidney, prostate, cervical, ovarian and metastatic cancers.

23. Catrina Beaty Hull (‘09) and husband, Jeff, are excited to announce the birth of Nathaniel Michael Hull. He was born on October 8, 2014, weighing 8 pounds, 10 ounces. 24. Scott Ordeneaux (‘11) and Lauren Slater Ordeneaux (‘12) are the proud parents of Rebecca Sinclair Ordeneaux, born in Lakenheath, England on July 24, 2014, weighing 7 lbs., 7.2 oz. and measuring 21 inches.

25. Martha Miller (‘11) traveled to China with fellow engineering Industrial Distribution students from Texas A&M with the university’s Global Distribution Study Abroad Program. The trip was sponsored by Brenntag, the world’s leading chemical distribution company. Students visited companies in the chemical distribution and manufacturing business in China and learned how international business and distribution is conducted. The trip culminated with a research project for Brenntag, which was then presented to executives in North America and China.

26. Catherine Crozier (‘10) and Trevor Sparks (‘10) were married on April 6, 2014, in College Station at 7F Lodge. CCS alumni and former students in attendance were Tony Lozada (’10), Michael Teague (’10), Brandon Galloway (’10), Samuel Howell (’10), JD Davis (’10), Lauren Davis (’12) and Colleen Franklin. Hallie Salmon (’10), Alyssa Wynans (’10) and Olivia Crozier (’17) were bridesmaids, and Rachael Elkins (’10) and former students Amy Bernard and Taylor McCraw were in the wedding party. Catherine graduated from Texas A&M in December with a BA in English and a minor in art. She recently started working for Sysco as a master data specialist. Trevor graduated from Stephen F. Austin in December with a BA in Organizational Communication and a minor in business communication. He currently works at Woodforest National Bank in the anti-money laundering department.

Alumni News 27. Lexus Van Pelt (‘11) is enjoying her senior year at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR). She has worked hard and remained on the academic Dean’s List each year and will soon graduate with a degree in criminal justice with a double minor in ASL and art. She’s also enjoying her final soccer season as a member of the ladies soccer team.
