Cypress Christian Football would like to thank all of our fans, parents, booster club members, donors, and sponsors for making it a great year. Without your support the Warriors would not be poised to return to the playoffs for the fifth straight year and capture a fourth straight district title. We hope you enjoy all the action as the Warriors take the field for the 2012 football season.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

OUR FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY

At Cypress Christian School, we believe in providing as many opportunities as possible for our students to grow spiritually, academically, and physically. Our athletic programs are designed to build both physical strength and personal character. Furthermore, keeping a high degree of physical fitness increases a student’s ability to concentrate in the classroom.

Football at Cypress Christian is much more than a competitive game that young men play.

It is an

intentional curriculum that uses football to build men. On the field of athletic competition, many qualities are developed in an individual that are beneficial in all other areas of life. Such qualities include an appreciation for hard work, self-discipline, commitment to a common goal, loyalty, dependability, the ability to deal with loss and adversity, the ability to receive instruction, sacrifice, and teamwork. In addition to all of these benefits, it is great fun to both participate in sports as an athlete and to watch as a parent or sports fan. In all of our athletic programs, our underlying goal is to honor the one that gave us our abilities. As it is written: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” I Corinthians 10:31

The intent is to produce men that will live with reckless abandon for Christ in all things at all times; men that will be the same in public as they are in private; men

Goal For every player to know Christ and to make Him known

Purpose Statement The purpose of Cypress Christian Football is threefold: 1. Use football to teach principles and values that will result in the building of courageous men who will live sacrificial lives to the glory of God both on and off the field 2. Purposefully build deep meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime 3. Develop each player to be the best football player he can be

Message from Marsha Martin, Athletic Director

A Different Kind of Program

As we enter into the 2012-2013 school year we are eager to get started and take on the new challenges that await us. We have dreams and plans for district play and post-season but God’s Word reminds us that our most important plan must be “Leaving a Mark” wherever we go. Colossians 1:10 commands us to “…walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.” The Warrior Coaching Staff is prepared to help each student-athlete find his/her own way of doing just this. As we plan, strategize, and practice, our number one goal will be to bring honor to Jesus Christ. It will take everyone – students, coaches, and parents working together, to ensure we are “Leaving a Mark” that does honor and glorify Him. The success of Cypress Christian athletics will be measured by the marks we leave, not by the points we score. It will be a tough battle each season, but we are prepared to be the Lord’s Warriors from beginning to end.

The offense has a new spark this year in part because of the addition of Coach Kris Battles as the running back coach. It will feature a very deep and talented group of receivers led by two seniors, Bobby Miller and Jake Borkovich, on the inside, and two juniors, Andrew Wilson and Frank Aufmuth, on the outside. Tommy Glazier will be taking the calls behind a young but talented offensive line. Paul Odeyomi and Tony Salario will be the two senior anchors. Jason Groll will be hard to replace and several will get the opportunity to take snaps including Calvin Novotny and Blaise Fontenot. New wrinkles and quality depth at a lot of skill positions will make the offense exciting to watch this season.

The Warriors will face a new expanded district that features some old rivals in Beaumont Legacy and Galveston O’Connell, to join along with some new schools in Tomball Rosehill and The Woodlands. The Warriors will be looking for their fourth district title and fifth straight playoff appearance. This installment of the football program is built on a solid foundation and growing legacy of great senior leadership. CCS graduated some great players but the young players are quickly closing the gap and filling in the holes left by graduation.

OFFENSE

Defense is always a puzzle that needs to be figured out. Graduation took the most players from the defense but several players have moved into new positions and others are stepping up. Two of the Warrior’s all-district players, Will Echols and Michael Boyd, have each moved to safety. The other two returning all-district players on defense, Dan Crozier and Paul Odeyomi, will stay at outside linebacker and defensive line. The defense will blitz more this season to increase the pressure on the quarterback with a goal of forcing more turnovers. The Warriors will continue to be a defensive-minded football team during the 2012 campaign.

SPECIAL TEAMS CCS is quickly becoming a great kicking school. Despite the loss of Austin Barton to graduation the Warriors have two very talented young kickers in sophomore, Will Echols, and freshman, Landen Nealy. Jake Borkovich will once again be a primary returner along with Frank Aufmuth and Andrew Wilson. Matt Bancroft will be taking over the punting responsibilities.

2012 PLAYER PROFILES

The 9 Principles

2012 PLAYER PROFILES

SENIORS

1. Called to Love • Our responsibility is to Love: coaches must love the players and players must love each other. 2. Relationship Driven • Be intentional about building community, encouraging and motivating through love. • Players will be called to publicly encourage one another. 3. Servant Leadership • Captains will serve the team, and the varsity will learn to serve the middle school team. 4. Humility – Be the First to Give All • Be faithful, available and teachable 5. Live Lives of Sacrifice • The player must die to himself for the sake of the team. • Being part of a team is being part of something bigger than ourselves. • Being part of a team means we give up rights and gain responsibilities. 6. Success measured in how we “Close the Gap” • We are competing against our own best “selves” to close the gap between our potential and our performance. • We want a player’s best every day in every situation, but what God desires for us is greater than that—it is perfection. 7. Persevering with Eternal Perspective • Pursuing excellence on and off the field through Christ is a life-long journey, not a short-term goal. • Success is a road, not a destination. • You can always do one more: one more block, one more tackle, one more sprint. 8. Live with Passion • God wants us to give the maximum effort in all things, at all times. 9. Love to Lose • We love "to win" and want to win every game, but "winning" is only a byproduct of true success; therefore, we are free to play our best because there is no fear of losing. • God’s victories often come through our defeats and, as a result, our character gets refined.

Coach Spenn is entering his fifth season as the head coach and his seventh overall season at Cypress Christian. As head coach he has led The Warriors to a 30 – 18 record, District Championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and four straight playoff appearances. However, his passion is for mentoring and building Godly men through the game of football. Everything the football program does is based on building men, not just physically but spiritually as well. It will be years before the true success of the football team is known but he is committed to being transformational in the lives of every player. Coach Spenn played collegiate football at Taylor University (’95-’98) as a wide receiver and was a standout wide receiver at Watseka High School in Illinois. The wide receivers remain his favorite position on the football field to coach.

Coach Laidlaw is entering his third season at Cypress Christian. He has 10 plus years of coaching experience mostly at the collegiate level along with college playing experience. This season he will work with our defensive line along with his defensive coordinator duties.

This will be Coach Honeycutt’s fifth season at Cypress Christian. He will once again coordinate the offense and work with the offensive line. He played high school football for Dayton.

Coach Spenn on Chris: He is great at breaking down the defense and our schemes so that they are both simple and sound. It is a great blessing to have Chris on our staff and to see his heart for being transformational in the lives of our players.

Coach Spenn on Tim: He brings a passion and excitement for the game football to the field everyday. He has a great way of connecting with the kids and seeing life from their perspective. This is not just true for the high school players because nearly every kid K-12 at our school knows his name.

This will be Coach Nugent’s second season at Cypress Christian as both a coach and a teacher. He has over 10 years of football coaching experience. He will continue to work with our linebackers this season. Coach Spenn on Tom: I started my coaching career with Tom over ten years ago and he has been a good friend ever since. He has a great passion for coaching and building up kids. The kids love being around him and playing for him.

Name Biography: Prior to being named the head coach, Kelvin served as an assistant coach for two seasons. As an assistant he was the Defensive Coordinator for both the MS A and B football teams. Coach Mason is a graduate of Heritage Christian Academy, a private Christian School in Huntsville Texas. Upon graduation he received a scholarship to attend DCC (Dallas Christian College) and play college basketball. However, his passion for football led him to transfer to SAGU (Southwestern Assemblies of God University) in Waxahachie, Texas, where he played three years of collegiate football. Coach Mason is currently completing his BS in business administration at Southwestern University. Philosophy: Coach Mason loves teaching his players to enjoy the sport and have fun. Kelvin believes giving his players the confidence they need to be more than an overcomer through any adversity is the key ingredient for success.
