Cypress Christian Football would like to thank all of our fans, parents, booster club members, donors, and sponsors for making it a great year. Without your support The Warriors would not be poised to return to the playoffs for the fourth straight year and capture a third straight district title. We hope you enjoy all the action as The Warriors take the field for the 2011 football season.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

At Cypress Christian School, we believe in providing as many opportunities as possible for our students to grow spiritually, academically, and physically. Our athletic programs are designed to build both physical strength and personal character. Furthermore, keeping a high degree of physical fitness increases a student’s ability to concentrate in the classroom. On the field of athletic competition, many qualities are developed in an individual that are beneficial in all other areas of life. Such qualities include an appreciation for hard work, self-discipline, commitment to a common goal, loyalty, dependability, the ability to deal with loss and adversity, the ability to receive instruction, sacrifice, and teamwork. In addition to all of these benefits, it is great fun to both participate in sports as an athlete and to watch as a parent or sports fan. In all of our athletic programs, our underlying goal is to honor the one that gave us our abilities. As it is written: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” I Corinthians 10:31 We hope this year you will catch the “Warrior Spirit,” enjoy coming out and watching the games, and share in the excitement of our athletic program. Go, Warriors!

Stephen Novotny, J.D. Head of School Cypress Christian School

Message from Marsha Martin, Athletic Director Welcome to Warrior Athletics for 2011-2012. As last year was such an incredibly successful year, what does the future hold for the Warriors? We are “Taking the Challenge” as we head into an even more exciting and incredible school year. God has been working to put everyone and everything into His perfect plan. God’s Word provides all the challenges we need to building our student athletes up to be prepared to take their game to the next level and to take their place in the world as His servants. This year we are focusing on Philippians 4:8, “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable – if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise – dwell on these things.” As a coaching staff, we desire to grow each student athlete in every area. The success of Cypress Christian athletics is largely dependent on daily commitment by its coaches, parents, and athletes to grow both spiritually and physically. Therefore, success cannot be measured solely by looking at the scoreboard. As we go through this year, each person will be able to see every level of success we meet. Warrior Athletics is ready and we are “Taking the Challenge.” Join us as we seek to be our best for Him.

OUR FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY

Football at Cypress Christian is much more than a competitive game that young men play.

It is an

intentional curriculum that uses football to build men. The intent is to produce men that will live with reckless abandon for Christ in all things at all times; men that will be the same in public as they are in private; men that will be great husbands and fathers in the future; men that will learn to build deep meaningful relationships that will be used to sharpen each other

Goal For every player to know Christ and to make Him known

Purpose Statement The purpose of Cypress Christian Football is threefold: 1. Use football to teach principles and values that will result in the building of courageous men who will live sacrificial lives to the glory of God both on and off the field 2. Purposefully build deep meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime 3. Develop each player to be the best football player he can be

Theme Verses – Football is Worship •

Colossians 3:17—“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” • Colossians 3:23-24—“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Biblical Football Is Competing and hold each other accountable for a lifetime. Our success will not be measured in wins and losses, but

• By the Power of God • According to the Word of God • For the Glory of God

Excellence in Competition in how well we close the gap between our potential and our performance as players and as men. In fact, it will probably take ten years to determine just how

If we are going to worship through football, then we must pursue excellence on the field. We must strive to put the best team on the field with the goal of exceeding our potential as individuals. We will strive for excellence as coaches by developing the best offensive and defensive schemes to fit our personnel.

Values: successful this season really will be.

Love, Faith, Humility, Perseverance, Commitment, Trust, Encouragement, Contentment, Courage, and Servant Leadership

2011 SEASON PREVIEW

Closing the Gap Three straight playoff appearances and back-to-back district titles are not the only things to be celebrated about the football program at Cypress Christian. There continue to be great stories about the growth in the lives of the young men that are putting on the football uniform at Cypress. This year we will have 40 high school players and our largest middle school team ever with 38 middle school players. The football program will have two full teams at the middle school level and play a seven game high school junior varsity schedule. The coaching staff has added two great new coaches to the high school in John Griffin and Tom Nugent. Tyler Martin is also returning to the football program to help with the middle school team. The Warriors return 12 starters but have already had some young players step up and fill in the gaps. Expectations are high and so is the commitment level of the players. Summer strength and conditioning workouts were both the toughest and the best attended they have ever been. The Warriors should be a favorite to win the district and make a deep playoff run. The road is not easy as The Warriors will play against the higher division for three straight non-district games (Northland, Westbury, and Second Baptist) but this season all three will be played at home. The district will remain the same as The Warriors battle Faith West and Bay Area for the TAPPS Division III District 4 title.

OFFENSE A senior heavy offensive line is looking like a strong point for The Warriors this season. It will be anchored by Phillip McCurry and Travis McGrath who will be aided by the help of new comer Miles Bremen. Junior quarterback, Thomas Glazier, will take over for Jonathan Mason but will continue to hand off to All-State tailback Jason Groll. Kyle Moon will spend a little time on offense as he works at fullback to give The Warriors an added weapon in the backfield. The passing game will be lead by All-State wide receiver Ben Mitchell. Andrew Galloway, Bobby Miller, and Jake Borkovich all have great hands and will make for a balanced attack on offense.

DEFENSE Graduation was tough on the defense but young players are stepping up and The Warriors did return some special players. All-State safety, Kyle Moon, will anchor the secondary along with Troy Mason, Michael Boyd and new comer Barnabas Odeyomi. The linebacker core returns Jase Clark and Daniel Crozier. It will also have help from freshman Will Echols and junior transfer Grayson Dansby along with Jason Groll who will spend time on both sides of the ball. Paul Odeyomi will anchor a defensive line that will see a lot of two way players rotating through including Cameron Kostak, Travis McGrath, Miles Bremen and others. The defense will be more aggressive and should prove to be very solid throughout the season.

SPECIAL TEAMS Austin Barton will continue to kick for The Warriors. Most kickoffs should go through the back of the end zone and he should be automatic from inside the 35 when it comes to field goals. He will also take over the Punting as Jack Mitchell is now playing for the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

2011 PLAYER PROFILES

The 9 Principles

SENIORS

1. Called to Love • Our responsibility is to Love: Coaches must love the players and players must love each other. 2. Relationship Driven • Be intentional about building community, encouraging and motivating through love. • Players will be called to publicly encourage one another. 3. Servant Leadership • Captains will serve the team, and the varsity will learn to serve the middle school team. 4. Humility – Be the First to Give All • Faithful, Available and Teachable 5. Live Lives of Sacrifice • The player must die to themselves for the sake of the team. • Being part of a team is being part of something bigger than ourselves. • Being part of team means we give up rights and gain responsibilities. 6. Success measured in how we “Close the Gap” • We are competing against our own best self to close the gap between our potential and our performance. • We want a player’s best every day in every situation, but what God desires for us is greater than that—it is perfection. 7. Persevering with Eternal Perspective • Pursuing excellence on and off the field through Christ is a life long journey, not a short-term goal. • Success is a road, not a destination. • You can always do one more: one more block, one more tackle, one more sprint. 8. Live with Passion • God wants us to give the maximum effort in all things, at all times. 9. Love to Lose • We love and want to win every game, but it is only a byproduct of true success; therefore, we are free to play at our best because there is no fear of losing. • God’s victories often come through our defeats and, as a result, our character gets refined.

2011 COACH PROFILES

Jacob Spenn – Head Coach/Wide Receivers Coach Spenn is entering his fourth season as the head coach and his sixth overall season at Cypress Christian. As head coach he has led The Warriors to a 22–13 record, District Championships in 2009 and 2010 and three straight playoff appearances. However, his passion is for mentoring and building Godly men through the game of football. Everything the football program does is on building men, not just physically but spiritually as well. It will be years before the true success of the football team is known. Coach Spenn played football collegiately at Taylor University (’95-’98) as a wide receiver and was a standout wide receiver at Watseka High School in Illinois. The wide receivers remain his favorite position on the football field to coach.

Coach Laidlaw returns to Cypress Christian for his second season. He has 10 plus years of coaching experience mostly at the collegiate level along with college playing experience. This season he will not have a specific position to coach but will coordinate both the defense and the special teams.

This will be Coach Honeycutt’s fourth season at Cypress Christian. He will once again coordinate the offense and work with the offensive line. He will also work with the running backs this season. He played high school football for Dayton.

This will be Coach Nugent’s first season at Cypress Christian as both a coach and a teacher. He has over 10 years of coaching experience at the middle school level and has been a quick learner at the high school level. He will work with our linebackers this season.

Coach Spenn on Tim: He brings a passion and excitement for the game along with a solid understanding of what I want out of our offense. He has a great way of connecting with the kids and seeing life from their perspective.

Coach Spenn on Tom: I started my coaching career with Tom ten years ago and he has been a good friend ever since. He has a great passion for coaching and building up kids. He has already made a great impact on our program.

Coach Spenn on Chris: He is great at breaking down the defense and our schemes so that they are both simple and sound. It is a great blessing to have Chris on our staff and on campus full time.

2011 COACH PROFILES

Wes Van Pelt

William Fields

John Griffin

Quarterbacks

Defensive Backs

Defensive Line/Offensive Line

Coach Van Pelt has been coaching football at Cypress Christian for ten seasons. This will be his third season working with the quarterbacks. Wes has coached a little bit of everything over the years and that well rounded experience adds great value to our program.

Coach Fields will be returning for his second season at Cypress. He has a distinguished career as a player where he played four seasons for The University of Houston and then 8 seasons professionally in the Canadian Football League and the Arena Football League. He will continue to work with a very talented defensive back field.

Coach Griffin will be joining the staff for the first time. He has over a decade of coaching experience at both the high school and middle school level at several large schools in Texas and Oklahoma. Most recently he had been the head middle school coach at Goodson Middle School. He will be working with our defensive linemen and helping Coach Honeycutt with our offensive line.

Coach Spenn on Wes: He has a unique perspective that helps him to connect with the players as a great coach and a great mentor. He has a servant’s heart and continues to be a great mentor to me as well.

Volunteer Assistants:

Coach Spenn on Will: He has a great understanding of the game and his playing career has earned him the respect and trust of the players which gives him a great opportunity to teach the game of football. The kids simply love playing for Will.

Tim Bancroft – Quarterbacks

Coach Spenn on John: John has a great heart for coaching the right way and his years of experience as both a coach and with The Fellowship of Christian Athletes area tremendous assets to our program.

Taylor Brown – Defensive Backs

Many other volunteers, from team mom’s and chain crew members to statisticians and filmers, make Friday nights possible at Cypress Christian.
