take control ARE DISC BRAKES THE FUTURE?
Borrowing from the world of mountain bike and cyclocross, disc brakes on road bikes are the latest tech innovation. Why are so many riders choosing to trade in their calipers, and is it really worth the investment?
Rain and tough riding conditions have never deterred the devoted roadie, however the introduction of disc brakes offers a wealth of benefits to British riders who are all too familiar with the challenges of the changeable (and often unpredictable) weather. Disc brakes can help to boost performance, enhance control and increase safety. They allow you to brake later and harder into those downhill corners, increase modulation for a greater sense of control and most importantly, they continue to work well regardless of what the elements are throwing at you, so there’s no need to panic when the heavens open.
EFFICIENCY Offering more power when braking into corners, disc brakes allow you to brake later and harder whilst carrying more speed out of the bend.

There was a point in time where lace-up cycle shoes were the only option. They were difficult to adjust, the laces and eyelets gave way and you’d find yourself in need of an upgrade sooner rather than later. Now, laces are back, and with new technology eradicating some of those bugbears, they’re becoming the shoe closure of choice for many top riders. Investing in the best cycle shoes you can afford will always pay off when it comes to finding the perfect fit. Whether you’re a fan of ratchets, Boa closures or laces, the better the technology, the finer the adjustment
you can make to optimise performance and avoid troublesome pressure points. Lace closures will never be easy to adjust on the fly in the way that Boas or ratchets are, and that may be enough to encourage you to stick to what you know. If you are tempted by reduced weight, enhanced aerodynamics and a stylish, retro look, however, you can expect to find reinforced laces and eyelets, and a longer area of adjustment that allows you to achieve a full foot fit that lasts. Perfect for shorter races, weekend rides and a great choice if you have wider feet or a known problem that needs to be accommodated.

We all like the idea of riding faster and more efficiently, but for most of us, comfort will have the biggest impact on how much enjoyment we get from our time on the bike. The smallest adjustments can make a big difference; at CycleSurgery, we use cutting-edge bike fit technology to provide a custom setup that is personal to you, helping you to get the most from your ride, while alleviating common riding-related pains and reducing the risk of injury. You, the rider, are at the centre of everything we do. We take the time to talk to you about your riding style, any previous injuries, and assess your flexibility before starting the process of achieving a fit that truly meets your needs. Our expert technicians then make adjustments and offer advice on each part of your setup, to ensure that it is working for you. It matters to us that you are truly satisfied, so all bike fits include a follow up visit after a couple of weeks, allowing us to perform any further fine-tuning. We offer two different types of personalised, one-on-one bike fit service: Specialized Body Geometry Fit, which is available at our Covent Garden store, and Guru Fit, available at our Lee Valley VeloPark store. fancy a bit of rough? IT'S TIME TO FOLLOW THE R O A D L E S S T R AV E L L E D . . . Have you ever gazed longingly at that winding track, disappearing into the unknown, and then looked at your shiny road bike and thought better of it? If this sounds familiar then an Adventure Road bike could be the answer. Adventure Road bikes (or gravel bikes as they’re also known) are as tough and adventurous as you are. Taking key characteristics from road, touring and cyclocross, such as disc brakes, wider tyres offering added grip and stability, and a higher tyre clearance, they allow you to take on a greater range of terrain in a variety of weather conditions. As with everything there’s a trade off. These bikes are tough, with a wider gear ratio to help you handle everything from bumpy descents to thigh-killing climbs and can even be fitted with mudguards and a luggage rack for long-distance journeys. The relaxed geometry puts you in a more stable, upright position that’s comfortable over distance and a bit less skittish; you’re unlikely to win a time trial, but when it comes to all-weather riding, commuting or exploring away from the tarmac, then it’s a tough act to follow. men’s

Mips THE SCIENCE OF SAFETY
2
MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System) made its first appearance on the bike scene a couple of years ago when it was introduced into high-end MTB helmets. Now the technology has found its way beyond the trails and onto the roads, along with a price tag that makes it accessible to all, but what are the benefits of MIPS and how does it differ to what’s already on the market? Our brains are protected by fluid that helps to absorb shock and prevent contact with the skull on impact. MIPS helmet technology has been designed to mimic this natural protection. All helmets are tested against direct impact, but in reality most impacts occur at an angle. Like the brain, the MIPS MultiDirectional Impact Protection System allows some movement between the outer shell and the layer against the head, absorbing more rotational shock and significantly reducing the risk of concussion. 1. Sliding Layer The low friction liner sits on the head and allows the helmet to rotate independently to redirect impact. 2. Shell MIPS technology disperses impact energy by enabling a small amount of movement between the sliding layer and the polycarbonate hard shell. 3. Elastomeric Attachment System This allows the helmet liner to move on impact. It only moves a few millimeters, but it helps to absorb shock that would otherwise be transferred to the brain.

OUR FRIEND'S
electric Already a common sight on the continent, electric bikes are rapidly gaining in popularity here in the UK. Past prejudices have been cast asunder and replaced with praise, as more and more riders discover the benefits that come from a little boost of well-placed power. Imagine what you could achieve if you could amplify the effort that you put into your riding. The new generation of E-bike technology is designed to do just that, using power assisted pedalling to produce a higher output, meaning that whether you’re an experienced rider, or trying to get back up to speed after a long absence or injury, you can get the most from your cycling. The benefits for urban riders are clear, E-bikes allow you to ride further for
longer and take the sting out of those dreaded hills and weary commutes, but what are the benefits for the off-road rider? The assistance offered helps you to make it to the trails with plenty of gas left in your tank; it makes light work of the ascents, letting you really have fun on the downhill, and allows you to power out of corners like never before. There’s only one way to find out what an E-bike can do for your cycling: book a test ride and try it for yourself.

TIME TO
FATTEN UP Just when you thought you’d got to grips with MTB wheel sizes, another variation has been thrown into the mix, but are mid-fat tyres just a gimmick or are they here to stay? Plus sized bikes like the Specialized Stumpjumper Comp 6Fattie and Orbea Loki 27.5+ offer incredible grip and stability, without the extra weight and tough handling that you get with a fat bike, resulting in a confidenceinspiring ride that will excite novice and expert riders alike. Enthusiastic rookies will appreciate the added grip and shock absorption, which will allow
them to ride tougher terrain with added control and stability; the more experienced mountain bikers, meanwhile, can use the extra traction and pop to push harder, faster and have more fun on even the most challenging and demanding runs. As with everything, whether or not a mid-fat bike is for you purely depends on what you want from your ride. If speed is number one on your list then you can’t beat a 29er; if you want the ultimate in manoeuvrability then a 27.5 may be for you, but if you value control above all else, you better start making room in the garage!

GIVE THEM THE B E S T S TA R T
Bikes never stop being fun. No matter how seriously you ride, there will always be those moments when you’re bombing down a hill and feel the same rush of joy and excitement that you did when you were a kid. A great cycle experience as a child can lead to a lifelong obsession that helps to keep you happy and healthy, so we make sure that we only select bikes that we think will allow you to give your kids the best possible start. Early Rider’s beautifully-constructed wooden and aluminum balance bikes help children to pick up the confidence needed to ride at an early age, making the transition onto their first full bike
as simple as possible. Once they’re ready, they can move on to the brand’s high quality pedal bikes, which offer clever features like a belt drive, which will never stretch like a chain and won’t get clogged with dirt and grease, meaning easy maintenance for Mum and Dad! If you’re desperate to get your kids to your local trail centre, kit them up in the junior version of Endura’s popular Hummvee range and get them on one of Specialized’s scaled-down trail bikes. They don’t compromise on quality and come complete with everything they need to build their skills with confidence.
