Final Nuke Event of 2011 Byron, Illinois - September 4

ound ten of the 2011 Nuclear Series saw a terrific day of weather, and racing. The hilltop track was busy with the smaller displacement youth and ATV classes while the Legacy track saw a few changes in the back section. Conditions were a little wet in the morning after rain the day before, but as expected, that just made for ever improving conditions as the day went. Some of the season’s championship point battles were clinched, others waiting to be decided today. Toss in some bonus Kawasaki contingency, and there were plenty of reasons to get pumped up about the race. Alex Nagy kicked off more of the same in the 85Sr class as he powered through the first corner and into the lead. Iowa’s Blake Halstead grabbed on to Nagy’s rear fender and held on as long as he could at the quick pace. By the second lap, Nagy had started to break away, and Halstead had built a small lead over Nick Lorenz, Stuart Schwagerman and Jason Mack. From there the running order was set to the end with Nagy pulling away a little more with each lap. The second moto running order was established out of turn two. Nagy led Halstead and Lorenz, but this time Mack had the jump on Schwagerman. Mack came under pressure all moto, riding solid to the end in fourth overall. Nagy took a comfortable win once again. The 85Jr class was dominated by repeat national champion Chase Sexton of La Moille, IL. Most of the moto saw a good battle for second as Dylan Boyd did all he

could to hold off a relentless charge from Jarred Berggren that lasted all the way to the end of the moto when Berggren’s hit the ground, and back to seventh. Austin Macias and Zack Tatar pushed each other as well to finish in third and fourth. Sexton took control right off the gate in the second moto as well. Berggren was running second ahead of Boyd and Macias. Tatar was looking for a way around Macias in the second lap, but then fell and dropped back a couple spots. Matt Michelotti charging to second overall in the Open B class.

Scott Zont went 3-1 for the 250A class overall.

Jeremy Barone needed a good final round to lock up the +30B/C championship, a 1-1 sweep more than took care of it.

Boyd was the next rider to sample the soil, but he was back up quick in third, only losing one spot to Macias who held on for third, good for second overall (3-3) ahead of Boyd’s 2-4 motos. One of the many cool things about the vet classes is many of the riders have been racing each other for years, and are good friends.... the rivalry becomes part of the fun. When Terry Hahn grabbed the +45 class holeshot with long time friend Roy Nafzger right behind him, you know it added to the incentive to win. Hahn held Nafzger off for the first couple laps, but eventually the sneaky Nafzger found a line to take over. Hahn wasn’t done getting pushed though, as William Ziesk worked up and challenged for second to the end. Anthony Bartemio finished fourth in the eleven rider class.

The second moto was a repeat for the two front runners, Hahn grabbed the holeshot, and Nafzger spent the next couple laps trying to make a pass. He got by in the third lap, then made a mistake and Hahn was back out front. With the white flag already out, Nafzger re-took the lead for the win and overall. Ziesk was running up near the front early, then made a mistake and dropped back. Bartemio ran in third all the way for third overall ahead of Paul Marescalco (8-4). The 250A class was as close as ever with Brandon Pope leading off the line. Tom Garrett tucked into second in the second corner as Joseph Dalzell was third. In the first lap, Cody Simonton passed Cory Catalani for fourth. Pope was running good, and holding his own while Dalzell spent three laps pushing Garrett before finding his way into second. Scott Zont was on the move as well, moving into fifth, then passing Simonton for fourth. With less than two laps to go, the pace up front increased as Pope didn’t want to give any time to Dalzell. Then Pope washed out the front end on a hard packed corner, and dropped back to fourth for the final order. Dalzell took the win ahead of Garrett and Zont. TZR/ Club 57/ Decal Works/ Barone Spinal Care backed Zont after the second moto, “I knew I needed to get a good start and from there I just wanted to ride smooth and have fun. There was pressure on me the whole time, but I just managed to hold my own and not make too many mistakes.” Zont just edged out Pope for the holeshot, and then led all the way to the finish. make anything stick and had to settle for second. Simonton started in third, and after a battle with Garrett, and then Dalzell, finished fourth. Dalzell climbed his way into third for second overall (1-3) behind overall winner Zont (3-1). Conner Robinson led from start to finish in the first moto of the 125cc class. Motosports Factory/ 4PR/ TZR backed Robinson, “It went really good out there. The track is starting to rut up really nice, and they did a great job prepping it after practice. The start is so important and I got it and that was big.” As Robinson ran out front, Jordan Mackiewicz worked up to finish second ahead of Ricki Williams, Dakin Coons and Iowa’s Jacob Falk. Robinson shot to the front in the second moto as well, but this time he was under attack from Coons. “I just stayed on him until he made a mistake then passed him. I jumped further down one of the little hills in the back and got the inside line,” said Coons. From there Coons held on for the win, and second overall after falling in the first turn of moto one, and fighting back to fourth. Robinson finished second, and was the easy overall winner. Williams finished third in the moto and overall.

When twenty 250B riders left the line it was Erik Utech out front on his #111 Yamaha. Coming up quick, and passing for the lead in the second lap was Reid Janson. Janson, “I didn’t get the best of starts but moved up to the front right away, and then passed Erik (Utech). The track is really tacky, and I was just trying to hold it wide open everywhere I could. I want to thank Reiman’s Harley Davidson and my parents for all their

help.” Utech held up to plenty of other fast riders for second with Jeremy Fisher finishing third after a tough battle to get away from Kyler Hyde and Daniel Latour. Mason Flatness made up for early problems by passing Latour in the final lap for fifth. Mason Flatness had something to prove in the second moto, and he did just that. Grabbing the holeshot, and leading from start to finish, he redeemed himself. Janson was back in fourth at the start, doing all he could to move up. The third lap was magic for him, as he got by both Utech and then Latour for second, and first overall. Drew Jackson grabbed the 250C class holeshot, and then led every lap for the first moto win. Kyle Kunstman kept him honest every step of the way, while Ryan Kostner had to work up to third in the second lap. Kenny Ehredt had an off first moto, finishing twelfth, but grabbed the holeshot in moto two ahead of Justin Hove and Jackson. Just before the end of the opening lap, Jackson went inside of Hove for second. A few corners later he found another good inside line to take the lead. Hove caught Ehredt and they rode close to the finish ahead of Kyle Anderson and Joshua Hove.

Jackson took the win as Justin Hove’s 5-3 finishes were good for second overall ahead of Kostner (3-6). After winning both motos of the Open C class as well, Jackson seems to be putting it all together on the track. “My dad has made some set up changes, and the bike is working really good. My dad (the well known Jr Jackson) and I have been training a lot lately as well as riding together, and I’m just feeling more comfortable out there.” On the Hilltop track, in the 50Sr class Brennan Wages borrowed a bike, and felt so comfortable on it that he swept both motos. Cody Spiekerman kept him honest early in the first moto to finish second ahead of Eugene Wolff and Thomas Bayliff. In the second moto, Kash Schnowske came back from a first moto DNF to finish second ahead of Spiekerman, Wolff and John Perovic. In 50Jr, Ewan Krisch went down in the first corner, and spent the rest of the first moto working up, eventually finishing third behind winner Ryder Schnowske and Johnny Weber. The second moto worked for Weber, as he got out front early and took the win for the day’s overall ahead of Krisch and Kevin Huddleston. Anthony Edgerton went 6-4 for fourth overall ahead of Luke Jackson. Feld Motor Sports® announced the Arenacross Series schedule, which begins on October 29, 2011 at the famed Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa and concludes - for the first-time ever - at the Target Center in Minneapolis on February 26, where the AMA Arenacross Series champion will be crowned. The 12-stop tour, which showcases the most intimate form of indoor, off-road motorcycle racing, will host four races before January 1 for the first time since 2008. Additionally, the AMA Arenacross Series stops in three new venues, including the Cedar Park Center in Cedar Park, Texas; SRC Arena in Syracuse, N.Y., and the Target Center in Minneapolis. "After an epic 2011 AMA Arenacross Series, we are excited to build off of last year's success, which included 26 hours of television coverage on SPEED," said Todd Jendro, senior director of two-wheel operations, Feld Motor Sports. "Last year, the sport witnessed a milestone when Vicki Golden became the first female to qualify for an AMA Arenacross Series main event. Two-time AMA Arenacross Series champion Chad Johnson looks forward to using the 20112012 schedule as a road map to a hopeful third AMA Arenacross Series championship. "I am pumped on the new schedule for the 2012 AMA Arenacross Series, starting at the end of October is awesome," said Johnson. "Visiting three totally new venues and with the final round taking place in Minneapolis is a great addition, especially for me because it is only four hours from my home in Wisconsin. I look forward to racing in front of my family and friends." The full schedule can be found in this issue. Obama signs lead law-exemption bill for kids' off-highway vehicles. In a victory for families who enjoy responsible motorized recreation, President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill to allow the sale of kids' off-highway vehicles (OHVs) to continue on Aug. 12th. The measure exempts kids' OHVs from the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008, known as the lead law. The CPSIA, which went into effect on Feb. 10, 2009, banned the making, importing, distributing or selling of any product intended for children 12 and under, including kids' dirtbikes and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), that contained more than a specified amount of lead in any accessible part that might be ingested. The new law is a victory that is the result of nearly three years of intensive efforts by the AMA and its partner organization, the All-Terrain Vehicle Association (ATVA), their members and millions of advocates of responsible OHV recreation. "Federal legislators deserve a lot of thanks for their tireless efforts, especially U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.), U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and all the other lawmakers who supported an exemption," said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. "Hundreds of thousands of parents, kids and motorcycling club members responded to AMA calls for action to contact their elected officials and their efforts, along with all those volunteers who circulated petitions and took other actions, brought this issue to the attention of Congress and turned the tide in our favor.”

he Central Illinois Motorcycle Club ran a weekend double header hill climb on September third and fourth, with Andy Fortner claiming the Fast Time of the Day award at both events. Fortner claimed his Fast Time trophy at the rain shortened Saturday night event with a 2.717 second run in the +40 class. Mike Pulver claimed second in the class with Jon Creek third. Fortner's closest challenger for the Fast Time award was Josh Denson, who earlier set a 2.735 second run to win the 600cc class. The rain stopped the riding after the 65cc class in the second round. The weather cleared and all classes got both rides in on Sunday, with Fortner taking the Fast Time award again and claiming two class wins on his CR500. This time, Fortner claimed the 600cc class win with a sizzling 2.422 second high flying time on his first ride, a time that held up for both the class win and his second Fast Time award of the weekend. Joe McGurer was second with a 2.469 second time, which was also second fastest of the day. Fortner claimed the Senior class win again for his second win of the day with a 2.583 second run. Jon Creek and Mike Pulver followed in the next two places. Pulver also enjoyed a double win day, taking both the 400cc and Open Stock class wins. He claimed the 400cc win with a 2.941 second time, just enough to edge Kyle Galloway who posted a 2.943 second time, with Fortner third in 2.954 seconds - only 13 thousandths of a second spaning the top three riders! Pulver took the Open Stock class win by only 4 thousandths of a second, his 2.999 second time just good enough to edge Nick Daniels who posted a 3.003 second time. Joe McGurer took third with a 3.014 second time, resulting in only a 15 thousandth of a second span for the top three riders in the class. In youth class action, Levi Peters claimed the Youth Fast Time award both days, and was a double class winner on Sunday. His 3.325 second ride on Saturday night gave him the Youth Fast Time award and the win in the 85Jr class, with D.J. Watson second and “Little” Andy Fortner third. On Sunday, Levi won the 65cc class with a 3.509 second time with Aaron Craig second, then carded a 3.127 second time to win the 85Jr class and take the Youth Fast Time. Fortner was second with Watson third. Other youth class winners were Brodie Bennett in the 50cc class both days, Chase Banning in the 65cc class on Saturday, Jacob Bell in the 85Sr class Saturday with Clayton

Maier Roars at Tigerton Tigerton, Wisconsin - August 28 By Pete Emme

he MotoZone in Tigerton, Wisconsin was in full swing on a beautiful and mild late summer day in August. 176 entries were on hand to battle it out on the rough and tough Tigerton track. Fond du Lac transplant Matt Maier was in the Open A and +25A classes, winning all four motos on the day in convincing fashion. Maier made the move to the Yamaha YZ450F this season and has seemed to found a passionate love for the white machine as it has smoothed out his riding style. A few other racers also swept their motos; Tyler Skodras in 250B, Sportsmen B/C and Open B aboard a Port Yamaha sponsored machine. Joshua Jensema took home wins in 250C, as did Carter Crowley in Open C. Brandon Clifford came from behind to snag victories in the 125Jr class, and Hunter Sayles in Mini 85. Isaac Therrien and Eugene Wolf won in the Pee Wee divisions and Ashley Densow keeps pounding out those wins in the Women’s class. Pat Kumm won +25B/C and Rodney VanEperen rode like he was 16 again in the +30A class and Bryan Rusch won +40. Dylan Ziolkowski looked really strong aboard his Honda in the 250 class, taking back to back wins. In the first moto of 250A, it was Clayton VonMoos taking the first moto holeshot just ahead of Dylan Ziolkowski with Joshua Philbrick right on his tail. VonMoos dropped back to the third position and Ziolkowski held a three second lead over Philbrick by the

halfway point, and they cruised to the checkers while Justis Heckendorf and Jacob VanEss rounded out the top five. “I got a pretty good holeshot, was right in about second place when we came through the corner. When I got out front I tried to put in some good laps,” said winner Ziolkowski. The second moto had Philbrick and his Honda out in the front over Dan Heindl on his 125 and a charging Ziolkowski tagging along. Philbrick made a mistake near the halfway point and went down and almost got himself in a mess near the pond in the bowl turn. That allowed Ziolkowski to sneak into the lead allowing himself to capture back to back wins. Philbrick remounted to finish in the runner up spot, good for second overall. VonMoos put in consistent tallies of 3-3 for third overall. 250B had Markus Markee dicing it out with Tylor Skodras for the holeshot in the first moto. Skodras kept it pinned through the first

tight right hander and took over the lead before they hit the plateau. Kyle Hameister kept an eye on the two Yamahas out front, but Skodras was quickly pulling away. Markee lost some valuable time to Skodras who was quad jumping the sand section after the finish line. Mid moto, forty something Lee Heckendorf moved into the third spot but gave it back up to Hameister on the next lap. Skodras was too much for the B class, who is quickly turning into a dominating factor in the state of Wisconsin, and he’s only fourteen! He went on to win the second moto with ease. Rounding out the top five overall were, AJ Woller 4-2, Markee 2-4, Jason Kidd 5-3, and Hameister went 3-5 for fifth.

Blake Hansen put his Suzuki out front in the 85Jr class with the Yamaha of Dylan Densow close behind. Densow got close a few times and made up some time over the jumps, but the young Hansen kept it pinned to the end to take the first moto win. Densow got the nod in the second moto and that was good enough to take the overall. Hansen went 1-2 for second while Connor Anderson made the trek from Eau Claire to finish in third with a 4-3 score. Matt Maier jumped out in the first moto of +25A, and was simply untouchable in this class. Moving along in a distant second was Chris Junkans with Robert Landolt and Shawn Keller battling it out for third. The second moto was a carbon copy of the first as Maier went back to back while Landolt went 3-3 for second overall with Devin Haws going 5-2 for third. In the 125Jr class it was the Suzuki of Jordan Schiller getting the jump on the two strokes with Brandon Clifford running close behind in second. Clifford gained some ground by making a pass late in the second lap and moved out to a lead. Clifford kept it pinned by just edging out Schiller at the finish line by a bike length. “On the start I moved into the second spot and then a lap later I got him on the same straight and then I got into the lead, I started

to tense up a bit but I guess it was enough to win,” said Clifford. The second moto had Schiller making his way up front with Clifford letting Schiller get away early on. Blake Bocek tried to make a move early on the leaders as he moved into second, but quickly fell back to third as they exited the sand whoops. Clifford was quicker through the corners and on Schiller’s rear fender by midmoto. Schiller made a mistake handing the lead over to Clifford, and he walked away win. Bocek took advantage of Schiller’s misfortune and landed a second overall with his 3-2 score while Schiller (23). Matt Maier was the man to beat in the Open A division. Maier ripped off two holeshots and led every lap of the big bore class. Dylan Ziolkowski ended up second with 3-2 scores while Philbrick went 2-4 for third. Lukas Cobian went 4-3 for fourth overall. “The first moto I had got off to a good start but it was kind of tricky to find some good lines and I tried to get into a rhythm and stay consistent,” said Maier. “The second moto, I had another good start and found some better lines. It helped that I watched the 250A class and found some things that I didn’t see. I was able to pull away pretty good and had a good day.” Tons of good racing and plenty of prizes were given away to all rac-

FVOR Victory for Vance Wedron, Illinois - August 21 By Nikki Dixon

ound 4 of 5 at Fox Valley was fast and fun, with excellent traction, and still had the typical FVOR trademarks, such as the finish line spectator logs, rock creek, some motocross, off-cambers, and of course hills mixed in. The new FVOR split program with the +50/ C/ Thumper/ Women/ Vintage in the morning, and the A/ B in the afternoon has had positive feedback, especially with reducing congestion and lapped traffic. Kyler Vance led the AA class into the timber, but Steve Willis was the new leader through scoring tower, with Vance, Ryan Moss, and Matt Dissell all within a couple bike lengths. Vance regained the lead on lap two, chased by Moss and Dissell, as Willis dropped back to fourth. Dissell and Vance exchanged the lead for the next three laps, until Dissell topped the leader board for seven laps in a row, with Vance never more than 10 seconds back! The top two were running laps in the 8:30-range, coming through the checkpoint with time to complete a 12th lap. Vance wicked it up on the last lap with an 8:32, the fastest lap of the day, to make a last lap pass on Dissell and capture the win. Willis reeled in Moss around the one hour mark for third, with Moss and Jason Kloptowsky wrapping up the top five. Alec Perry regrouped after a last place start to earn the Open A win. John Siekman led around the first turn, but Timothy Reid moved out front on the first lap, trailed by Steven Daniels, Jeff Snedecor, Stephen Stuenkel, and the rest of the field. Snedecor chased down Reid, to take the lead on lap four. Perry charged up to second on lap five and passed Snedecor after a couple laps. Once out front, Perry put in several laps in the mid 9-minute range, edging out runner-up Snedecor by a little over a minute at the finish. Reid, Stuenkel, and Daniels mixed it up for

third the entire race, with Daniels getting the nod at the checkers. Nolan Schuhler led 200B to the first turn barrel, but Travis Ward snuck by on the outside to take the lead. Ward hammered out several laps around the 10 minute range to capture the win, followed by Schuhler and Anthony Steinhauer. Ward was also was the top finishing overall B rider, edging out Open B winner Matthew Walsh by almost a minute. Jesse Keith led +30A through scoring on the opening lap, chased by John Ryan, Travis Held, Shane Harmon, and the rest of field, with less than 10 seconds separating the leader from sixth place. Held and Ryan moved into the front two spots on lap two, with Keith crashing coming out of rock creek. Held led through the checkpoint for the remaining laps, with Ryan only two seconds back at the white flag. Held secured the win

over Ryan, trailed by Steve Simpson, Patrick McClure, and Keith. +40A was a battle between Kenny Otterbach and Greg Gourley. Robert Koscielski led in the start, but Otterbach took over the lead on the opening lap, with Koscielski, Jim Perry, and Gourley in tow. Gourley led the next several laps, until Otterbach caught back up around the one hour mark. They raced wheel to wheel the next three laps, until Otterbach put in his best lap with a 10:07 to open up a small lead with a lap to go. Otterbach secured the victory, followed by Gourley, Perry, Greg Vroman, Koscielski, and Jay Hall. In +30B, JJ Cones picked up the holeshot, but Jerimy Hanlin led at the first checkpoint, trailed by Cones, Everett Dahlberg, John McCarrens, and the rest of the field. Cones passed Hanlin back on lap two, as Brian Smith, Dahlberg, and McCarrens mixed it up for third. Hanlin dropped out of the race on the next lap, as Cones opened up a lead over Smith, and McCarrens moved into third. Cones continued to put in consistent laps, his best a 10:13, to extend his lead to nearly two minutes at the white flag. Smith had problems on the final lap, dropping from second to fourth. McCarrens moved into second, and held off a late race push from Brandon Norris, with Smith, and Dahlberg rounding out the top five. Shawn Val Alsburg led wire-to-wire in the +40B class, logging the fastest lap of the class with a 10:29. Matt Wamhoff held down the runner-up spot the entire race, until Jeff Oldenburg ran his fastest lap with a 10:52 on the final lap, to edge out Wamhoff for second. Wamhoff, Andy Garecht, and William Horsley wrapped up the top five. Kale Cline had a great day, topping both 50cc and 65cc Beginner. Cline led wire-towire in 50cc, with Micah Alleman and Blake Hoffman rounding out the podium. In 65cc Beginner, Jay Pelka grabbed the holeshot, and led the first three laps, chased by Cline and Autumn Torres. Cline moved

out front on lap four, and led through the checkpoint for the remainder of the 11 lap race, and logged the fastest lap of the class with a 2:45. Eli Otterbach charged through traffic after a last place start and had a couple of 2:46 laps to finish second, just 13 seconds behind Cline at the checkered flag. David Herman, Torres, and Pelka rounded out the top five. Luke Wamhoff led the 65cc class in the start, with Tanner Whipple and Thor Rick in tow. Whipple took over the lead on the opening lap, as Wamhoff stayed with him, and Garrett Ward moved into the top three. Wamhoff regained the lead on lap three, with Whipple on his rear fender for the next two laps. On lap five, Wamhoff turned the fastest lap of the class with a 10:09 to pull away, and get around in time to complete a sixth and final lap. Whipple, Ward, Doug Propper, and Rick wrapped up the top five. Mason Schuhler picked up the 85cc holeshot and led the first lap, trailed by Blake Ryan, Matt McDonald, Ethan Greve, Jake McCarrens, and the rest of the riders. McDonald moved into second on lap two, and hunted down Schuhler, and the race was on! Schuhler and McDonald matched each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s times the final two laps. Schuhler maintained his three second lead through the scoring tower to capture the win in the close race, followed by McDonald, Ryan, Greve, and McCarrens. Jarred Hall and Jeff Gourley split wins in the Supermini and 200C classes, with Hall getting the nod in Supermini. Luke Kelly led Supermini into the woods, but Hall moved out front on the opening lap, with Gourley right behind. Hall turned six consistent laps around the nine minute range to stay out front for the win, with Gourley and Kelly rounding out the podium. In 200C, Riley Schuhler led through the scoring on the first lap, with Gourley, Hall, Mitch Ternes, and Logan Kelly in the hunt. Gourley took over the lead on lap two, with Hall right behind, and the two ran nearly identical lap times for the next three laps, with Hall one second back. Finally Hall cracked the 10-minute lap mark with a 9:56 on lap six,

Peter Kavsky dominated the Open C class, leading through the checkpoint on all 10 laps, and opening a good lead over the battle for second between Nolan Fritz and Mark Sticha. Fritz edged out Sticha by four seconds at the checkers, while Mike Norris caught and passed Eric Knight for fourth late in the race. +30C was the biggest class of the day,

Mika led the first lap, with Rick Mahrt a few seconds back. Mika and Mahrt were flying on lap three, as Mika logged a 9:31, and Mahrt a 9:35. Both riders eased off that pace, but Finefield was on the move, eventually reeling in Mika around the one hour mark. On lap 10, Fienfield turned his fastest lap with a 9:34, to take the lead at the white flag. The two battled to the checkers, with Finefield getting the nod by a bike length. Mahrt held off a late race charge from DJ Ryan to finish third. Glen Kaszynski led the 11rider +50B class on the opening lap, chased by Dale Buffo, Duane Buffo, and Jeff Whittington, who were all within a few bike lengths. Whittington was the new leader on lap two, with the top four still in a cluster. Dale Buffo moved out front on lap three, and was pressured by Whittington for a couple laps, until opening up a minute lead with three laps to go. Sam Mertes was on the move, dropping his lap times in the second half of the race, and reeling in Whittington for second with two laps to go. Dale Buffo stayed out front for the win, followed by Mertes, Whittington, Kaszynski, Duane Buffo, and Gary Martyn, with the top six all completing 10 laps.

Koch clinches Cambridge TT Cambridge, Minnesota - September 18 By Tim McBride

y topping both the 450 and Open Pro class main events, AMA Grand National #68 Josh Koch clinched the AMA District 23 State championship in both divisions during the final race of the season when race promoter Bailey Boehlke and crew played host to the Cambridge TT at the Norseman Motorcycle club grounds. The Jeffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s SOS/ General Engineering/ Last Minute Boyz sponsored Kochâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s day got off to a shaky start though. The two 450 Semi Pro heats were won by the two newly promoted Pro Sport contenders that came in the form of Larsons Cycle Sponsored Cole Anderson and M3 Racing rising star Mac McGrew. The start of the 450 Semi Pro main saw Koch out front early, but the race was red flagged when third generation flat tracker Cale Langland crashed. At the restart Koch grabbed the holeshot and raced to an uncontested victory. Anderson maintained a comfortable second place position throughout, but behind him a fast starting Jake LeClair held onto third before being regulated to fifth place late in the race by Langland and McGrew. The Open Semi Pro heat wins were a carbon copy for Anderson and McGrew. The main event got underway with McGrew out front again, this time followed by Anderson, Koch, Cole Fealy, Langland, Rich Delak and Dan Jacobson. After two laps of close racing between the top three, Koch pinned his ears back and made a bold pass on Anderson and McGrew as they raced though turn one and into the right handed hairpin. Koch must have figured enough was enough, and quickly checked out. Anderson eventually got by McGrew mid race to secure second but the race for third was yet to be decided. Langland pulled off the track with mechanical problems and McGrew drifted off the track and soon found himself in the clutches of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Langland

Gulch.â&#x20AC;? McGrew returned to track quickly, but not fast enough to be reeled in by Fealy who stole third place from McGrew via a daring last lap pass. Afterward, Koch reflected on his winning strategy, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had a CD-8 on the back during the heats and switched to a CD-5 Tech 8 (softer compound) for Sugg Retail $429.95 the mains. I still burnt it up pretty bad though.â&#x20AC;?

McCoy had the lead spot at the restart and led the last few laps. He knew he was in a bad spot since the draft off turn 4 at Springfield usually produces a winner. He waited and waited for the pass but it never came. Chris Carr aboard his AMA/ Classic H-D sponsored H-D gathered second place honors in his last ever Springfield Mile with Jake Johnson rounding out the podium. The finish was dramatic with Carr only .012 seconds back from McCoy and the rest of the ten rider field all within 1 second of the winner. McCoy had retired from full time racing a few years ago and only competed in the Indy and Springfield Miles the last couple of years. Willie credited his team from H-D of Wausau and Independence Harley for providing the winning machine he rode. Big Weekend at Hangtime Akron, Indiana - Saturday Sept. 2 By Becky Stichter

he staff at Reads Racing Unlimited packed Labor day weekend full of racing and family events. Things started Friday evening with an open ride followed by a free ice cream social, fishing contest and bicycle race. Apparently some folks did some toilet papering that evening, as the Guyers' motorhome seemed to be sporting a new look in the morning. Saturday morning there were the usual racing classes, and some additional ones were added. The 10th annual Women's championship included five classes, just for Women participants. Overall winners in these classes were: Maddison Guyer, in Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mini Quad; Emma Denney, in Pitbike; Madison Johnson, in 65-85cc; Lindsey Sandel, in Adult Quad; and Cady Pressler, in 85-250cc. All participants were entered in a drawing and received items (like hats, jerseys and pants) supplied by Dreyers Motorsports. In the 125cc 2-stroke class Willie Patton, Adam Lock, and Tyler Phillips had a good race. In the first moto, Lock came out of the gates fast, and quickly became the leader of the group. Phillips and Patton were next in line pressuring Lock to the end, but he held them back and won the first moto. Behind Lock, Patton was able to get around Phillips. In the second moto, Patton pulled the throttle back a little more, and took the lead. This time Lock had to chase Patton and try to make the move for the lead. Patton didn't buckle under the pressure, and took the win, placing him

first overall. In moto one of the 250B class, Spykes KTM rider Dalton Packard grabbed the holeshot. Kawasaki rider Dakota Robins was riding nearly bike to bike with Packard and made his way around during the first lap. Packard rode in second, while Jacob Kline and Austin Putchaven battled for third place. Robins ran 1-1 and Packard 2-2. Kline and Putchaven fought hard, with Putchaven finishing 4-3 at the end of the day. In the 250C class, Jacob White mounted on a Suzuki led the way out of the gates. Evan Denney and Tyler Phillips were running bike to bike, and were pressuring White as

they fought over second. White held the lead and was still being challenged by Denney late in the moto. In the final lap, Denney made his move and got the win. Phillips finished in third. In the second moto, these three were battling again. White pulled into the lead, followed by Denney. Phillips was right there with them, but crashed and was a DNF. White was able to hold Denney back this moto, finishing White 2-1 for the overall. In the 50cc (7-8) class the riders were flying and those little bikes were humming. KTM rider Brogan Strubberg was the fastest today, but Kaden Polito, Braden Allen and

Trevor Colip dished out a lot of heat from behind. Strubberg was able to finish 1-1, and Polito ran 2-2. The 6th annual Larry and Joyce Read Memorial event was held Saturday night. Races were in honor/memory of Larry and Joyce, the founders of Reads Racing Unlimited. The Reads always had an interest in motorcycles, and operated their own store. Things changed when their oldest son began racing motocross. After attending a few races, they were hooked. Soon after that, they began promoting races, and Reads Racing Unlimited was born. Larry and Joyce's goal was to offer motocross racing, and keep it family friendly. They made a point of getting to know the families, and especially enjoyed having the younger racers around. In the third turn Stanfield overshot the corner, giving Edwards the lead. The two battled the entire moto, with Edwards holding Stanfield off. In the second moto, Stanfield rode without making any errors, and was able to take the win. Brogan Strubberg rode to a 1-1 in the 65(7-9) class. Behind him there was a good 18

battle for second where in both motos, Colyn Iden and Dalton Edmondson fought hard. In the first moto, Edmondson took second. In the second moto, Iden stepped it up, and was able to pull ahead and take the position this time. In the 85 (12-15) class, Nick Fleckner was on fire. In the first moto Fleckner was out of the gates first, followed by Garrett Miller and David Stanker. Fleckner maintained his lead as Stanker worked his way into second, and Chance Enyeart pulled into third. Fleckner took the win, followed by Stanker, then Enyeart. The second moto ran much like the first, except that Miller pulled up and was able to finish third this moto. In the 85(9-11) class, Frazier Motorsports rider Justin Stichter was out of the gates first. Evan Faucett was not far behind. In both motos Stichter and Faucett were about a bikeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s length apart pressuring each other, and there was no room for error. Stichter ran 1-1 with Faucett finishing second in both motos. Joshua Taylor and Lucas Keasling battled in out for third overall, with Taylor running 3-4 and Keasling 5-3. Fortunately the races were done before the storm system moved in. Even though it was extremely hot out, there was time for the free chili pot and marshmallow roast. The wicked bolts of lightening soon approached, followed by a downpouring of rain. No one really seemed to mind though, they just found places to hang out and have fun with friends. Martin conquers all at the Clash Millville, Minnesota - August 28 By Rolfe Otterness

eremy Martin walloped his opponents as the Viking Clash Pro Am event returned for its 2011 incarnation. Martin dominated the A classes with wins in all 250 and Open A motos along with the 14-24A class. Other fierce warriors winning their battles included Travis Frias mastering the 65cc classes, Henry Miller wasting the competition in 125 Two Stroke and 14-24B and Zach Williams ripping it up in 250 and Open B. There were about 550 MX entries who invaded the Spring Creek facility, and the track was in great shape. To help tame these wildmen, the whoops section was expanded in length to its full extent, just to make sure that those who left with plunder earned it. Martin was the heavy favorite going into the 250A class, but Bobby Droher nailed the start in moto one to take the holeshot. Martin was right next to him and put the hammer down, taking over the lead quickly whilst Droher fell into a three-way battle with Scott Jendro and Bruce Dehn. These three were running tight for the next couple of laps until Dehn managed to make a bit of a breakaway. Jendro bobbled a bit and dropped back some as Cody Lackore was the man on the move, making his way by Droher after a couple of laps, then closing in to pressure Dehn in the last lap. Dehn could not fend him off and as the moto ended, Martin took the victory with Lackore second over Dehn, Droher and Joe Dalzell. Moto two began with Martin surging immediately into the lead as the pack rounded turn one. Dalzell dropped into the second

place slot with Jendro and Ty Tyrrell close behind. Tyrell was on the gas as Jendro dropped back with problems. Tyrell pressured Dalzell for a lap or so before working by for second. Dalzell next came under attack from Lackore, fending him off for a couple of laps with Bruce Dehn not too far back. When the checkered finally waved, Martin took a strong win with Tyrrell second over Lackore. Dalzell and Dehn cruised home for fourth and fifth. Martin looked strong on his 450 as the first Open A moto took place, leading from

turn one to the flag. Reese Miller ran in second early on but dropped back while Jendro and Tyrrell moved up mid-moto for a pretty good dispute over second. Jendro held on despite being under pressure for about four laps, and got just a bit of a gap nearing the end of the moto. Dehn took fourth over Ryan Orres. Martin scooped up the holeshot money in moto two and went on another rampage. Dehn took second away from Jendro early in the moto and ran strong to hold it to the end. Jendro battled for a bit with Tyrrell but couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t maintain third, so Tyrell moved up. Final

Vet Motocross Invades Aztalan Lake Mills, Wisconsin - September 10 By Dave Hollub

very September Aztalan gets invaded by a group of guys with ever increasing gray hair, they come to race while still keeping it all fun as the Mike Gaborsky RacerX Sr Series hits the track. Friday offered a chance for the Vet riders to hit a perfectly prepped track, and dial in some lines for Saturday. About 120 riders took advantage and many jumped at the chance to take a track walk with pro rider Ryan Hughes and learn the fast lines he found. On Saturday the +45A riders got the first gate drop and Dana Hunt powered his Honda out front at the holeshot. Hunt ran with Roy Nafzger chasing for four and a half laps before Nafzger found an opening and finished the moto in the lead. Meanwhile Todd Snyder held on to third. Robert Raduenz finished a hard charge through the class and stole fourth place away from Tom Dretzka just before the end of the moto. Moto followed the same script minus the last lap pass by Raduenz. Now the true MX Seniors hit the track as

the +60 class took their gate drop. Jerry Bumgardner grabbed the holeshot but Tim Graves was soon out front, and starting to open up a small gap. Bumgardner held on in second while Charles Koch and Mark Thompson fought for third with Thompson holding the position at the checkers. Bumgardner repeated the holeshot in moto two with Koch chasing him around the corner. By the half way point on lap one Graves was out front with Bumgardner second and Koch in third. They held their order to the checkers with Donald Hachmeister and Bob Lewis rounding out the top five. Pete Emme in +40B/C.

Pro rider Ryan Hughes was at Aztalan to run moto schools on Thursday and Monday, so he came out to race with the A riders. Todd Walton grabbed a big +30A holeshot in moto one as Hughes was fifth around the corner. By the time he went over the plateau Hughes was out front and had opened some breathing room behind him. Walton was being pushed by Karter Busse and then on lap three Chris Himes joined in on pressuring Busse and Walton for position. On lap four Walton bobbled and fell out of the top five leaving Busse to hold off Himes to the checkers for second. Peter Ledingham finished the moto in fourth. It looked like Walton was going to repeat the holeshot in moto

two but went outside at the corner leaving it open for Hughes to pull out front. Hughes hit the plateau with Busse who was now second. Walton was running third but had Himes poking a wheel in at the corners looking for any chance to move up. Busse went down in the East end and Himes moved to second. James Rossi was running third with Ledingham all over his rear wheel. On lap four Walton took over third place with Ledingham right behind him at the checkers. Hughes continued his overall streak in +35A and +25A, winning all four of those motos as well. Hughes later commented “My day went great, that was kind of expected that I would finish high but these guys made me work for it. My biggest concern was to try to show that there is a different way of riding and that there is someone in this sport that wants to show riders at their level how to go about it. I want to teach the rider to be safer which in the same coin is going to make him faster. A rider’s speed and safety is only as good as their technique allows which was my goal- not to whoop it up on everybody. This track is awesome. I think if it was in California people would love it. There’s a good use of elevation, nice sweepers and jumps, some sand, and some good technical stuff. I had a blast all day.” Tom McShane grabbed the first moto holeshot in +55 but Jeff Patel Sr. was out front

by the time they came over the plateau. Patel’s lead was over by the time they cleared the barn section as McShane was again leading. Todd White moved up on lap two and was right on McShane through the barn section. Michael Barta moved up from a midpack start to claim third. In moto two Patel was positioned for the holeshot but James Schrader swept outside and caught enough traction to power into the lead. Patel quickly moved into the lead and stayed there the rest of the moto for the win. Michael Gilleran was running second for the next three laps until both White and McShane got by him to finish second and third. White’s 2/2 day was good for the overall while McShane (1/3) was second and Barta’s 3/6 earned him third overall. Roy Nafzger led +50A out of the gate all the way to the checkers both motos while Tom Dretzka chased him from second. Randy Baumann battled with Jeff Patel Sr. to take the moto one third spot, then in moto two he had an easier time as he ran third most of the race trying to catch Dretzka. Every year more Dual Shock bikes seem to come back to life for the weekend and this year twenty-two of them lined up in the gate. Brian Martens grabbed a big holeshot for moto one with Daniel Glowacki second around the corner. Jon Schubert was moving through the class and by the second lap he was in position to start challenging Martens for the front spot. While they battled Donald Wennlund slipped by both and held a brief lead. Eventually the moto win went to Schubert with Martens edging out Wennlund at the finish. Schubert made it clear he wasn’t messing around in moto two as he grabbed the holeshot and stayed out front all the way to the checkers. Martens and Wennlund held onto second and third all race as well. The day’s racing wrapped up with the 125 Senior class. Michael Barta grabbed the

moto one holeshot but after that it was Matt Hansford out front both motos to take the wins. In moto one Mike DuClos ran second and despite closing in on Hansford he wasn’t able to take the lead before the finish. Gary Behrens battled past Brian Terry and then Michael Barta to grab third at the finish. In moto two Terry gave DuClos a fight for second but DuClos was able to hold him off. Barta finished in fourth. Once the moto math was calculated Hansford (1/1) had the easy overall with DuClos (2/2) second and Behrens (3/5) was third. he last points race at Hawkeye Downs was one bittersweet evening. The race was dedicated to Bob Cozine who was a wonderful person from the racing community who passed on last year. Provided was an emotional and heart felt tribute to this man from his family and friends and a positive way to celebrate a life taken too soon. God Speed Bob! The weather was great and racers were biting at the bit to get out there. Kicking off the gate early was those wonderful little 50’s. Dust even kicked up as that gate dropped and they were off. Rounding the first corner and leaving no room to spare was Trent Ryan and Audrey Biermann. Ian Brownsberger stayed behind the two leaders for the first moto making sure others knew he was ready to move up if

possible. While Ryan took the flag with Biermann and Brownsberger coming in respectively the remaining seven racers out there were in their own battles for the remaining positions. The second moto ran for this group before intermission. Ryan again started off in the lead with Biermann on his tail pipe. This time third and fourth place was being sought after by Brownsberger and Tristan Dietiker. Ryan and Biermann lengthened the lead and Ryan took first while Biermann finished second. Coming over the finish line in third place was Dietiker, just pushing out Brownsberger from the top three. Going from one extreme to the other to enjoy was the not so quiet 14-24A class. They were lined up, tensed up, with hands on full throttle waiting… yellow flashing light… turning to green with no seconds to spare and they were gone. Jeremy Kress took the first corner in the front

spot and never gave it up. He led the group through all laps with Tanner Oetting in his shadow and Bobby Hanson revving behind them. Kress came across the finish line in first with Oetting second and Hanson in third reluctantly. The second moto proved to be a little more of a repeat of the previous moto with all racers in the same positions until the third lap. Hanson wasn’t going to take third this time and passed Oetting holding onto that second place spot with a grip through the end. This was the final points race at Hawkeye Downs for 2011 and the next and final race will be the October 15th. We hope to see as many people there as we can as it is awards night for the Cedar Valley Trail Riders for the 2011 year-end results. It’s a great site to see all who have participated throughout the year come together for the closing of the season at Hawkeye Downs.

ith 250 entries signed up for the Pecatonica annual fair race, the new additions to the track, including a sand section, I knew it was going to a great night for racing, and it was! Making it even better, we were treated to a picture perfect summer day. The 14-24 class began the evening with a great race. Durk Roper led the pack through the sand section to claim the holeshot followed closely by Kenny Felgar, Kyle Nelson, Connor Robinson, and Steve Brookhouse. Hammond. Justin passed Hammond to take fourth as Six put the pressure on White before making a block pass through a corner to take over second. Maxx Malatia took fifth away from Hammond. Markwardt started in dead last after the first corner fall, but was now in sixth place after passing seven riders. Malatia got by Kelly. Markwardt was next to get around Kelly and had his sights on Malatia. On the gas, Markwardt passed Malatia, then White. Markwardt got bar to bar with Six through the rhythm section, then dove to the inside to make a pass. Six tried everything he could to get back around him, but Markwardt protected every line. It was phenomenal racing. Hofmaster took the win, as Markwardt his way to an impressive second ahead of Six, Malatia, and White. The Open B class was led by Erik Utech, Derek Witcomb, Kenny Felgar, Ricki Williams, and Jason Skudma. Whitcomb get past Utech who left the inside corner open. Utech not letting up, kept the pressure on Whitcomb who late in the moto crashed, giving Utech the win. Whitcomb recovered quickly to secure second, as Felgar finished third with Williams and Skudma rounding out the top group. The 2-Stroke class saw a war between Jacob Kelsey and Robbie Hyson. With Kelsey in the lead, Hyson challenged Kelsey throughout the entire race, but Kelsey prevailed for the hard fought win. The battle over third place was just as exciting between Ricki

Nelson has been doing more promoting than riding lately, but that didn’t stop him from making the pass to claim second, with Setterburg settling for third. Tucker Bright grabbed fourth place, proving that the 14-year old from Kansas City, MO has what it takes to challenge the elite racers. Only ten racers completed the required number of laps for their class to earn their Finisher medals, giving validation to the gnarliness of the event. unday at Montezuma started out with a beautiful service remembering the fallen of 9/11. There was a guest speaker, Capt. Sylvan Weiss, who talked with emotion and passion regarding what happened ten years ago and the responsibilities and pride of our Armed Services. It was an uplifting start to the memory of 9/11. Now on to.... racing! When the Quad 90 CVT crew lined themselves at the gate they were ready to go and track conditions were great. Throughout this moto, #26 Brandon Hoag and #334 Chance Nekola were in a battle at the front of the pack. Nekola took the lead and Hoag rode his tail around every lap. Tristen Liebe finished in the third place spot followed by Sydnee Steckly capturing fourth. The second moto was when the heat turned up on this young group. Nekola got the holeshot and proceeded with Hoag and Liebe pushing him in to each curve and lap. Hoag took the lead and while Nekola was behind,

Liebe was pumped and ready to pass in the final stretch of the whoops leading to the finish line. As he inched closer, his quad flipped in the whoops giving Hoag the victory and Nekola second with Steckly third. Liebe came through unscathed. The next full group of racers was the 85Jr class. Jaden Wertz dominated this class by taking first in both motos with ease. Second place became the battle zone and was up for grabs between Dylan Smith and Izaih Clark. Smith and Clark gave each other a good race as they stayed in contention in both motos. Wertz took first overall while Smith finihsed second overall ahead of Clark.

Koester Sweeps Hurricane Hills Mazeppa, Minnesota - August 14 By Mike Nelson

he weather finally cooperated with a beautiful day for racing at Hurricane Hills motocross park just outside of Mazeppa, Minnesota. Mitch Koester would agree as he took the holeshot in his first moto of the day and rode away from his competition all day long. He dominated the day by leading every lap in all six of his motos to complete the sweep, and take the top spot in the Open B, 250B, and the 14-24B classes. At just fourteen years old, Koester looks to be a dominating force wherever he shows up to ride for years to come. Koesterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s younger brother Marcus also made his motocross debut in the 85cc 12-15 class. Marcus took fourth in his first moto of the day, and then came back in the afternoon to finish third for a nice third place trophy in his first ever competition. Three other riders also pulled off a perfect sweep of three classes on the day. Kyle Lawler taking the 85cc 12-15, Supermini, and Schoolboy class, Nick Osowski won Open C, +25C, and +30C. Elijah Cato swept through the 125cc 2-Stroke, 14-24C, and 250C

classes. Lawler and Osowski dominated all of their races leading every lap. Cato had his hands full in the 125cc 2-Stroke motos with Matt Dohrn. Dohrn got the holeshot in the first moto and held the lead for the early part of the race before Cato managed to get by in the middle of the second lap and hang on for the win. In the second moto Cato took the lead right away, but Dohrn was right on his rear fender for most of the race looking for an opportunity to jump ahead. Cato stayed smooth and held on for the win and his first of three big trophies. In the C classes, Cato took care of business wining all four motos with start to finish leads. In the youth classes, Kaleb Carmen had a nice day for himself doubling wins in the 65cc classes. Carman handled the 7-9 class with ease, but had his work cut out for him against the older boys in the 7-11 class. In the first moto Austin Nelson and Seth Carpenter led the pack out of the gates and took the high line into the first turn on to the track. Carmen wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite as quick out of the gates, but powered past Nolan Rommel and cut to the inside to take the short way into the first corner and get by Carpenter and Nelson before they hit the first jump. Carmen was able to stay out front and get

the morning win ahead of Nelson and Carpenter respectively. In the afternoon moto Nelson took the holeshot and held off Carmen and Carpenter for the first lap, but when they came back around to the end of their second lap, Carmen was out front to stay, giving him his final win, and locking down that second overall. Another youth rider to turn in a nice performance was Kole Lemke in the 85cc classes. Lemke dominated the 9-11 and 9-12 classes taking the holeshots in all four of his motos and riding out front all the way through the checkers ahead of Colton Exner and Jayden Leuth, giving him a nice double for the weekend. The staff at Hurricane Hills did another great job, working hard to keep the track up and with all the other things that go into putting on a great day of racing, so thanks again to Jeff and the gang for all their hard work. ith temps in the 70s it was a perfectly beautiful and sunny day for racing as Sunset Ridge kicked off two days of racing on Saturday. Following the National Anthem, the bikes on the gate fired up for the first moto of racing. On the gate was the Open B class with Justin Brockman of Indiana taking the holeshot with Illinois’ Chad Lindahl and the rest of the pack behind them. Pickard held his lead even with pressure coming from Barnes and Walters, who had both moved up. Nick Crow moved up to fourth spot with Klenk fifth, just holding off Justin Medine. A lap later Barnes took the lead. With Crow in fourth he had a three-pack behind him of Medine, Klenk and Dillan Boeke. Barnes got the win with Pickard second, Walters third, Crow and Medine following. Second moto had Pickard in the lead again with direct pressure from Barnes, Boeke and Medine. Closing in the gap in the second lap, Barnes was getting closer to making the

pass on Pickard through the back tabletops. BaA lap later Barnes took the lead and was ready to take the win. Pickard pushed hard to try to redeem his lead, but just couldn’t get it accomplished before the finish line. Boeke maintained his third position with Medine close in fourth as Crow and Charlie Weber battled it out through the last lap. It was a great day of racing and Sunday’s Pro Am event entailed the same excitement. With thirty-two racers in the 250A class, first moto finishes went to Jeremy Martin, Jonathan Six, Scott Zont, Joe Perron and Dalzell. The second moto had Martin take the win ahead of Six again with Kody Kamm third, Vaughn Mays fourth and Pope fifth. Thirty-six racers participated in the Open A class. Martin, Sewell, and Aulseybrook filled the top three in both motos in some of the closest racing of the weekend. Put this many fast guys on the track, and you can expect an exciting race, it it lived up to the expectations for sure. With 26 racers in the 250C class it was anyone’s guess as to who would take the overall win. First moto finishes went to Austin Das, Jeremy Pogliano, Brayden Copeland, Drew Jackson and Keanan Tinkey. With a second moto change-up Copeland took the win, Jackson second, Pogliano third, Paxton Kerber fourth and Tinkey fifth. Overall finishes were Copeland, Pogliano, Jackson, Tinkey and Kerber. Another big weekend from Sunset Ridge as expected, and with only a few more races left in the season, now’s the time to get out while you still can. ain can sometimes leave you staring at puddles, wondering what is to come for the next day of racing. Practice had me wondering if I should sleep in or go play in the mud that Mother Nature made for us. I decided to head out, and good thing because it made for a track with Seattle supercross style rutted faces. I knew this was going to be a challenging day for everyone, and maybe have some crazy turn of events in Pine Ridge’s Pro-am race. In the first 250A moto we saw twentynine riders heading out on a very muddy and rutted track. Grabbing the holeshot was Carey Willett. Brian Collins, who hasn’t been to a race all year was running second with Kody Kamm third. Aaron Remter was followed by Dylan Narrell in fifth, who made the switch to his Honda two stroke. By lap two Kamm was pushing Willett hard for the lead, helping them pull out to a pretty decent lead. Ty Tyrrell made his way into third with Dylan Ziolkowski and Vaughn Mays following. On lap four Mays put his Yamaha to the inside of Ziolkowski. Kamm made his way to the lead by the halfway point and Mays passed Tyrrell for third and later Willett for second. If there was a hard charger award for this moto it would have to be Mays. At the end it was Kamm, Mays, Tyrrell, and Willett who went down with a lap to go. The track was back to perfect condition after they reworked it at intermission. Illinois’ 36 CYCLE USA, October 2011

Ty Tyrrell grabbed the second moto holeshot on his Yamaha two stroke with Willett and Collins right on his fender. By lap two Kamm moved from outside the top five into second. Willett kept his Kawasaki close in third as the battle between Tyrrell and Kamm heated up. Hanging in the fourth spot was Hunter Nystrom. Kamm made his way around Tyrrell by the half way mark and checked out. The big charger this moto was Nystrom making his way to second past Tyrrell late. Getting second overall was Tyrrell who stayed consistent with 3-3 scores and Carey Willett’s 4-4 got him and his Kawi third. The Sportsman and Open B classes had great battles between a couple Yamaha riders, Travis Erdmann and Tylor Skodras. Skodras won both second motos after Erdman won the first rounds. So one would think that Skodras would have had both overalls, but due to his poor first motos he handed the overalls to Erdman who was consistent going in both classes. As the rain started to fall earlier in the day, thirty-one guys were sitting on the line for Open A wondering if this was going to get worse before it got better. It didn’t stop Matt Maier from grabbing the holeshot from the inside with Kevin Markwardt close in tow, and Travis Grendzinski on his Kawasaki in third. By lap two Kody Kamm and Kevin Markwardt start their battle for second. Ty Tyrrell was having another good moto running in the top five. Maier pulled to a nice lead. Kamm

and Markwardt fought till Kamm tipped over and gave Markwardt some room to breath, but it wouldn’t last long as Kamm and Tyrrell both reeled Markwardt back in and passed him at the end. “I was running third. I thought I was in second so I passed Kevin (Markwardt) and thought I was winning until I got back to the pits and realized Matt had beaten me! I was pretty mad, but I knew just win second moto and it’s good,” said Kamm. Markwardt nailed the second moto holeshot with Maier and Kamm in tow. At the end of the lap one these three where wheel to wheel, but Maier went down just before the finish line corner, leaving the battle between ProAm, Continued on page 39

he I-94 Monster Energy Supercross Series wrapped up its summer series in conjunction with the annual Hustlerfest in Hustler, WI. This small farming town is host to the final rounds and I will say they know how to welcome the motocross community. They always say, good things come in small packages, well this series delivers. Although a little light in the rider numbers, it was big-time in everything else. The CMJ gang really promotes this series and each year they deliver the goods. Also cool about this series is that the The good news about this series is that the youth classes are packed, a good sign in our tough economic times. The racers were treated to the same track as last year as Hustler keeps it untouched throughout the year, so all that is needed is a little grass mowing and shaping up of the jumps and racing action takes place. Friday night the racers were under the lights, and after the racing were able to partake in the rest of the Hustlerfest activities. Let's just say it's a good thing racing doesn't start early on Sat-

urday. Once the parade was done on Saturday, the crowds were able to make their way over to the race track to watch the main events. The 85cc main event was first off the gate with the Pit bike class stagger starting behind. Dalton Smithey on his Honda CRF150 jumped out to a holeshot and he led the opening laps ahead of Travis Slaght, Scott Bunde and Tom Shaha. As Smithey began to creep away a good battle was taking place behind him. Not only were the 85cc racers battling but the pit-bikers were coming through the pack as well. When the white flag flew, Smithey was trying to hold off Kevin Popaeko on his pit-bike with his son Ryan close behind also battling for the lead in thier class. When the checkers fell, Smithey won the 85cc main with Shaha and Slaght rounding out the podium. The 50cc class was also stacked but the Oehlhof brothers had plans of their own. The brothers gated well and were quick to get out front once they got past Trevor Slaght who pulled the holeshot. Justin Oehlhof got into the lead as brother Jackson went down on the plateau jump. He quickly remounted but had some work to do. Erik Mikelson and Michael Severson were in the mix as well. It’s a pretty exciting race. In the end Justin Oehlhof took the win with Jackson making it back up to second ahead of Slaught who rounded out the top three.

The 250C class was also of decent size and after the LCQ the 10 riders making the main went to the line. Like I mentioned earlier, this may sound like a pretty small town but riders came from Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and also Poland. Yes that’s right, the country of Poland. Damian Bochenek from Poland was visiting in the states and couldn’t resist getting in some ride time. He quickly adapted to the YZ250F he was borrowing as he almost pulled the holeshot in the main.

Husler, Continued from P.37 Jacob Peterson grabbed the start and was looking good in the lead with Bochenek hot on his heels. Austin Goodwater was quickly into third place, and sizing up the leaders. On lap three Goodwater got around Bochenek for second and before we knew it we had a three way battle for the lead. On lap five, Goodwater setup Peterson on the start sweeper and squared him up on the step up to take over the lead. As the laps clicked away Goodwater maintained a decent lead but as the white flag flew and lappers became apparent, Peterson started to close the gap. Goodwater was able to put in a perfect lap and held off a charging Peterson. Bochenek rounded out the podium. Although some people think I’m polish, I couldn’t translate any of the conversation that Damian had with his dad but from the smile on his face, I knew he had a once in a lifetime opportunity to race Supercross in America. Markwardt, “I was determined to win, got the holeshot and started to sprint, but I felt the pressure from Kamm on lap 3 or 4. I was set on not making it easy on him to get around. Just when I thought I had things under control I stalled it. I still wound up third overall and happy. I’ll be back next year for sure.” By the end of the day you couldn’t have asked for a better track thanks to the crew working so hard to get it that way.

he AMA ran its 2011 amateur hill climb championship event on the Devil’s Staircase, in Ohio. Entries totalled 440+ for the 21 classes ranging from the 50cc Micro Minis through the big bore fire breathers in the Open class and Quads in the ATV classes. Riders came from as far west as Nevada and from as far east as New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island. An incredible 19 of the 21 classes were won by upper midwest riders from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. District’s 16 (WI/MI) and 23 (MN) are especially highly favored by riders who like their long, challenging hills. The last climb at Red Wing, Minnesota attracted 284 entrants on its 300 foot, 3 stage hill, and the return of Bay City at the Valley Springs club drew an astounding 388 on its 500’, 5-stage hill on September 4. Though most of the ‘regulars’ carry both District 16 and 23 cards, 12 of the 19 class champions reside in Wisconsin, while four came from Minnesota and three from Michigan. Luke Parmeter, from Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, was the only triple class winner, claiming wins in the 250cc, 600cc Four Stroke and 750cc classes. In the 250cc class Parmeter was in fourth place on Saturday with Eric Wheelwright holding down the lead. On Sunday, Parmeter flew over the top in 9.992 seconds to take the win, with Luje Trevor sec-

ond with a 10.291 second time. Wheelwright improved on his first time, but had to settle for third. Parmeter also came from behind in the 600cc Four Stroke class, finding himself in third place on Saturday, behind class leader Eric Donaldson and Jacob Prebe. He claimed the class win on Sunday with another 9 second run, this one 9.884 seconds. Prebe also slipped under Donaldson to claim second in 10.140 seconds while Donaldson couldn’t improve on his Saturday ride, and settled for the third place trophy. Parmeter also made another come from behind ride to win the 750cc class. He was in first place on Saturday, but Kaleb Northrup, from Hastings, Minnesota, slipped under him on the Sunday ride with a 10.238 second run to take the lead. Parmeter was up to the challenge, and responded with a 10.002 run to claim his third championship. Jacob Prebe, from Frontenac, Minnesota, was a double class winner. His first win came in the large (45 rider) and fast 450cc class. He really needed only one ride, as his first round time of 9.966 seconds held up. Prebe saved his best ride to win the prestigious King Of The Hill class. This class was for the top 20 riders of the entire weekend, and was a one run, winner take all event. Prebe took the coveted ‘King’ award with a fine 9.7180 second time. Zach DeGross, from Ellsworth, Wisconsin, was the only other rider in the class to post a time in the nines, with a 9.832 seconds for second place. Eric Donaldson was third in 10.099 seconds.

In youth class action, Luke Cipala was a double class winner. The youngster from Ellsworth, WI claimed his first title in the 65cc class. His 17.796 second time had him in first place on Saturday, but Davis Sunken from Minnesota moved into the lead on Sunday with a good 16.241 second time. But Cipala responded in a convincing fashion, posting a 14.740 second time on his second run for the win. Cipala found himself in fourth place after the Saturday action in the 85Jr class, behind Casey Paider in the lead with a 15.551 second time, Levi Peters and Samuel Burchett. On Sunday he topped the hill in an impressive 12.657 seconds to claim that class title and set the Youth Fast Time. Paider, also from Ellsworth, improved his first run with a very good 13.366 second run, while Andrew Fortner, from Pittsboro, Indiana, vaulted into 3rd place with a 14.074 second time. The Cipala family had an excellent day as dad Todd claimed the Senior class (+40) title, Logan took the 600cc class to add to the two championships Luke had claimed in the youth classes. unday was round three of the District 15 State Race Series. After all of the rain Saturday night, the track was pretty wet, and more rain threatened all day, but with the exception of a few sprinkles, it held off all day. These are the exciting races to watch as more riders come out, and the racing is even better than usual. Rockstar energy drink was on site today, and Rockstar t-shirts given away to the holeshot winners. First on the track were the bigger quads. In the first moto, Wyatt Evans was out of the gates first and set the pace of the race. Racing

all weekend, he had a pretty good feel for the track. Hunter Ridenour and Mike Behel were fighting for second. Evans crossed the checkered flag first, followed by Ridenour. In the second moto, Evans was again the first out of the gates and the pace setter. Evans had a hard crash in the big downhill jump in the first lap. The red flag came out. When the race was restarted, Ridenour came out in the lead, followed by Behel. Ridenour took the overall win, with Behel finishing second. Later in the day the report from Evans' friends was that he had broken his back, and was going to need surgery. We all are praying and hoping the best for Wyatt. In the +30B/C class Michael Warmoth was the overall winner, running 1-1. Cory Robinson ran in second both motos as Justin Kasza, Lonnie Orr and David Huss battled it out for third overall, with Kasza taking it by finishing 3-4. The 250C riders had a great race, with some talented riders giving it their all. In moto one, Avery Gambill, mounted on a KTM grabbed the holeshot. Less than a bike length behind were Jacob White, Tyler Phillips and Nicholas Craig. As they pulled away from the starting traffic, Gambill took the lead. Coming up fast from behind was Evan Denney, who was quickly riding in second. Denney pressured Gambill the entire moto, and it

looked like Gambill was going to hold Denney off, but in the last lap, Denney found an opportunity to get around to win. In moto two, Gambill was out of the gates in the lead again, just ahead of Denney. These two had another heated battle. Gambill kept hitting the throttle hard, and was able to hold Denney off. Running 2-1, Gambill took the overall win. In the first moto of the 250B class, Dakota Robins and Jacob Kline were the fastest out of the gates. White, Drew Tippman and Mitchell Brown were close behind. Robins maintained his lead while Mitchell Brown came up fast from behind and rode in second, getting a lot of pressure from Shaine Slone. Brown was able to hold Slone off, but wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to catch Robins. Even though Robins crossed the checkered line first, he was docked a position for cutting the track earlier in the moto after missing a corner. In the second moto, Robins had a clean start and led the group again. Slone pulled on his throttle more this moto, and took over second place early while getting pressure from Jake Truax and Brown. Truax was having a better run this time around, and worked his way into third place. Robins took the overall win running 2-1, and Slone took second overall, running 3-2. In the first moto of Supermini, KTM rider Evan Denney bolted out of the gates and easily took the holeshot. Joey Neely and Ryan Combs were next in line. Denney held his lead, but knew that Combs wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t far behind. Garrett Snodgrass and Kraye Loft were working hard for the third place ride. Denney rode without any problems, and finished 1-1. Combs raced well both motos, finishing 2-2. The 85cc classes were good sized again today. In 85(12-15) Nick Fleckner and Kraye Loft were out of the gates to lead the pack. Fleckner, riding well all weekend, attacked the track and had no difficulties taking the lead in both motos, to finish 1-1. Loft looked CYCLE USA, October 2011

comfortable on the track for second. Behind, there was a good battle for third place. In the first moto David Stanker took third, but in the second moto Hunter Weaver stepped it up and finished third. Stanker, finishing 3-4, took the third finish overall. The 85(9-11) riders were riding fast today also. In the first moto, Suzuki rider Braden Groves squeaked by Chandler Pitts to take the holeshot. Groves took the lead, followed by Pitts and Evan Faucett. These three held these positions a few laps, and then some changes started to happen. Pitts pulled up into first, bumping Groves to second, and Justin Stichter worked his way into third place ahead of Faucett. They rode hard until they saw the checkered flag, with Pitts crossing the line first. The second moto played out a lot like the first, with Pitts running 1-1 for the overall win. Adam Lock and Derek Dewitt were the leaders in the fast Open A class. Lock rode solid and held everyone else off, finishing 11. Great effort from Dewitt gave him a 2-2 finish. Battling it out for third overall was Mitchell Corbin, Zachary Maley and Blake Niccum. In the first moto, Corbin beat out the others. In the second moto, Niccum stepped it up, and finished third. In Open B Matt Dombrosky and Shaine Slone fought for first. Dombrosky ran 2-1 after swapping moto finishes with Slone (12). It was a good race to watch, and both rode well. Corbin Moore ran solid in the 65(7-9) class, finishing 1-1. Brogan Strubberg and Dalton Edmondson fought it out for second, with Strubberg finishing 3-2. In the Schoolboy 1 class, Willie Patton, Connar Troyer and Levi Johnson were the first three in line. Patton and Troyer put on an exciting show, with Patton finishing 1-1. These three riders faced each other again in the 125cc 2-stroke class, with Patton again running 1-1. Excellent racing! Open A led by Adam Lock.

Beavers To Your Corners! Atwater, Wisconsin - August 6

ollowing three rainouts earlier in the season, this was the first short flat track race in Atwater. It was a beautiful night for the Beaver Cycle Club to put on a great show with the pleasing crowd sitting on the hill waiting for some action. There were eight riders in the 50cc 4-8 four-stroke class. After the second attempt at a start, Brady Lange of Campbellsport led the way. It was short lived as down on the first lap was Rhyer Smit on the back stretch. This resulted in a complete restart. Smit was shown the third row start as he caused the red flag from his unfortunate luck. Lange sped to lead the race again, with Colton Witucki and Loyal Prach chasing close behind. With a few laps in, Prach and Witucki switched positions when a yellow caution flag was dropped as Ethan Jahnke went down in the same spot as Smit did earlier. Witucki was enclosing on Lange while weaving through lapped traffic. Witucki whizzed by Lange, but Lange charged hard back to first on the back stretch in the last lap to grab the checkered. A good clean race from start to finish came from the Vet class. Danny Vrana grabbed the holeshot with his green Triumph, never looking back and was awarded the win. Chris Baker, Patrick Stempar, and Todd Lefeber trailing along to round out the top four. The 450 Pro class was made up of all Honda riders. Brock Schwarzenbacher and Nick Smith jetted off side by side and throughout the race. They were back to four wide in turn three going into the second lap. As the laps went on, clinching the win was Schwarzenbacher. The Open Amateur action brought lots of cheering from the crowd. Morgen Mischler came a long way this year for only being fourteen years old, and racing with the big dogs. Cody Reifs-

nider grabbed the holeshot while David Schultz and Mischler were just behind. Mischler soon took over Schultz’s second place position. After a few more laps, Mischler took the lead from Reifsnider. It looked like several of the riders were losing traction as Mischler had the edge in this race as he pulled away from the others. Reifsnider sat comfortable in second with Schultz was third. Ian Steen snuck in to capture fourth, but was pressuring Schultz for his spot at the end. he Variety Riders Motorcycle Club of Ottawa, Illinois hosted a late summer trials event on their club grounds. Eric Miller and Jake Wroblewski played host to all the riders who came out to enjoy a day of riding and competition. The expansive loop proved as challenging to the riders as the

eight sections they rode during the day. Sportsman rider Ralph Littlefield said he felt challenged throughout the day, especially at the stadium section. Another Sportsman rider, Dan Schaidle, said, “Every year Eric does a great job hosting a trials, and this year it was exceptional. The perfect weather was a bonus.” The trials riding season is winding down but many riders are already looking forward to the next riding season. Trials rid-
