Duquette Enduro, long time coming Duquette, Minnesota - October 8-9 By Michael Pohl
T
wenty five months is a long time to wait for an enduro. The last Duquette Enduro was in August 2009. It was one year ago that wet conditions caused the Straight Arrow Enduro Rider Trail Boss, Ken Fastner, to ask the Minnesota DNR to close the forest. “It was to keep the trails from being hammered”, said Fastner. “It was only the second time we’ve had to cancel an enduro in 40 years. The other cancellation was back in the 70’s, due to dry conditions and worries about forest fires ”. Things looked grim for most of this year too. It seemed as if mother nature was in a wicked way throughout the summer. Persistent wet terrain kept the Nemadji State Forest closed much of this season. In July a massive wind storm knocked down trees throughout the forest, blocking the trails in hundreds of places. SAER members dauntlessly chainsawed their way through the ravaged timberland. Then came the rains. On August 1, six inches fell in less than 24 hours. The river through Duquette overflowed it’s banks. Bridges across trails were tossed downstream as if they were Dixie cups. Roads into the forest were washed out as culverts were overwhelmed. Access to the forest was blocked until the DNR could repair these roads. When the enduro was postponed from late August to early October, there was scant hope it would actually occur. But the weather pendulum swung again. Rain clouds became extinct in September. It was so dry the day before the event we were worried about dust. A forest fire raged just five miles south of Duquette, battled by heli-
copters and water bombers. We prayed to the weather Gods we’d get a half inch of rain Saturday night to tamp down the dust. We got an inch. Close enough! And so began the first fall enduro Minnesota riders have seen in several decades. Brown, tan and red leaves covered sections of the course. The golden light of fall created a feeling of openness in the woods not felt with the dense green foliage of summer. The first sections, especially for the early minutes, were a bit slippery, courtesy of the prior night’s rain resting on the leaves. By the time the riders hit the A/B section, ground conditions were perfect. Many riders were overheard saying, “awesome trails today” and “enduro of the year”. Yet, some of the faster riders thought the resets were a bit long. The 30 mph average, and trail conditions being unknown until the morning of the enduro, made calculating how long it would

take riders to complete various sections as challenging as predicting this year’s weather. “It was good that we went with a 30 mph average”, said Fastner. “Nate Ferderer almost zero’d one of the sections”. And Ferderer it was who took home the Overall Trophy. Just like he did for every other District 23 enduro this year, and last year too. This is a remarkable achievement. Such a performance has the markings of a national-caliber rider. It will be interesting to watch Ferderer’s future progress, as he is on an upward trajectory of domination that begs comparison to District 23 enduro legend Craig Holasek’s near decade rule of the sport. District 16 Membership renewals. For the 2012 season, you will no longer have to wait for the renewal forms to be mailed to you. Around the end of December, after all the new rules and classes are set, the membership forms will be available for printing off the web site, amadistrict16.com. Renewal forms will not be mailed in 2012. District Riders: Renew your memberships as soon as you get the opportunity to do so. Your Cycle USA magazine is one of your special membership benefits, and only renewed 2012 members will continue to get issues after the first few come out in the Spring. This December issue is the last one until the 2012 season kicks off with a March publication. From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman I have to apologize for missing the last issue. This has been one of the busiest years I have ever experienced, but it has been a good busy. AMA congress this year was somewhat quiet compared to previous years. I serve on the ATV committee and nothing new came out of our committee this year. There were no rules changes that came out of the Off Road committee this year either. There were several updates in the rules made in the Hillclimb division, they will be placed in the rule book once ratified by the Board of Directors. One of those changes will define youth classes for Hillclimb so be sure you wait to buy or mod a bike for HC until the new rules are out. Also new for Hillclimb, a machine may only be ridden once per class to prevent more than one rider from using the same machine in the same class. Motocross had several changes as they usually do. Some of the biggest include a change in the Girls class, the new classes would be Girls 9-12; 59 to 85cc 2 stroke,

maximum front wheel size 17 inches and minimum rear wheel size 12 inches with a maximum rear wheel size of 16 inches. The other change is a girls 12-16 class; 79 to 112cc 2 stroke 75 to 150cc 4 stroke maximum wheelbase 52 inches, maximum front wheel size 19 inches maximum rear wheel size 16 inches. Again this has not be ratified but I would be surprised if it was not approve by the board. Another big change to MX will involve the National Advancement system. Starting in 2012 all of the big National Amateur races will awarded AMA advancement points. This is a concerted effort to reduce the sandbagging by avoiding AMA events. Events such as the Mini O’s, Ponca, Mammoth, Branson, GNC Finals, World Mini ect., will be awarded 1.25 times the points awarded at regular district events.

AMA National Amateur Championship will be awarded 1.5 times the normal points. There will also be an added recommendation that all racers use protective equipment such as neck braces, knee braces, chest protectors etc. At this time this is a recommendation, not a rule, but I would look for rules regarding protective equipment in the years to come. Another interesting change involves helmets. The Snell 2005 approved helmets will not be approved for AMA competition as of 2012. This is due to the testing method used. The ‘05 method rated penetration resistance which makes the shell less flexible which in turn results in more impact delivered to the head. Beware of the test rating on any new helmet you buy. Acceptable standards will be Snell 2010, M2010, or DOT FMVSS 218. Another positive move by the AMA is the training of referees. Without going into all the details, the AMA has started a referee training program that will have 4 levels. I am excited about this as it should add consistency and quality to all AMA events. At the local level we had our event sanction meeting and annual membership meeting on the 20th of November at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Bloomington MN. Our annual awards banquet will be held on December 10th at Treasure Island Resort and Casino just north of Red Wing, MN. This is great facility with many entertaining things to do for all ages.
I hope I have brought you up to date on all of our business and that of the our parent organization the AMA. I will say the best part of Congress this year was the ride out and back. We had beautiful weather both coming and going. We took the Great River Road from Lacrosse to the Quad Cities and crossed IL, and IN into Columbus Ohio. And we didn’t hit any more deer which is always a positive thing as one a year is my limit. See you all at the awards banquet, Mike The 2011 District 15 Banquet is scheduled for February 25th at the CW Mount Community Center in Tipton, Indiana. There will be a new schedule for the awards banquet so watch the website, amadistrict15.org, for more information. Jim Cooper, D15 President District 15 Year-end points. Unfortunately at the end of November, when this issue had to go to print, most of the District 15 year-end points were not yet available. With the exception of Hill Climb, all the others were still being worked on. Hopefully we will be able to include the rider recognition in the March 2012 issue. NMA Prepares for 2012 National Events The NMA is gearing up for 2012, and is looking forward to another successful year.
The 41st Annual World Mini Grand Prix will again be presented at the super Mesquite MX Park in Mesquite, Nevada. The 2011 event saw an increase of 20% in entries at this great location. Next year the event dates will be April 9 through April 15, 2012. There is no qualifying for the World Mini Grand Prix, the original national motocross event for amateurs and up and coming pros. The 37th Annual NMA Grand National Motocross will be July 22 through July 28, 2012 in Ponca City, OK. Racers can qualify for the Grand Nationals in 40 Regions across the country. The 2011 event attracted over 2,000 entries. The 18th Annual Branson USA National Motocross Championship will be October 3 through 7, 2012 near Branson, Missouri. Branson USA has the unique distinction of being the only event at this facility. The track is built once a year over national terrain along the James River. There is no qualifying for this great, fun event. Contact NMA at 951587-9805 or nmamx.com for more information on how you can be part of these great events in 2012.

Sugar Maple closes D16 Season Hill Point, Wisconsin - October 20 By Dave Hollub
I
t is hard to believe that just two years ago Sugar Maple MX as a full race facility was only a dream to Jason Erdmann. Today as racers lined up for their gate drops they had become part of the fulfillment of that dream, as the second successful season came to the checkers. Almost 75 riders came out on Saturday to dial in the track at the open practice and today 180 would line up in the gates to race. When the sun rose Sunday morning it was obvious the track was groomed to perfection, and ready race. First class off the gate was Quad A, and
Scott Kinczfogel was out front with Jay Mittelstaedt close behind, Brett Beier was running third and Jacob Powell fourth. Mittelstaedt was pushing hard and by lap three was poking his wheels in at the corners. On the fifth time around Mittelstaedt looked to be setting up a last second charge when his chain snapped just after the first valley and forced him off the track. In moto two Kinczfogel again jumped out to the lead but this time Powell was in second with Mittelstaedt third. Beier was running quite a distance back after a bad start but looked like he was flying as he came around the Daytona corner. Mittelstaedt was out front before lap three began and Beier moved up to second by the end of the moto. Beier’s consistent finishes payed off as his 2/2 put him on top for the overall while Kinczfogel (1/3) was second and Powell (3/4) third. Beier, “It started out a little rough today. I almost wiped out in the second moto. I tried to run my own race keeping it clean and I ended up coming out in second again. It was pretty good since I just bumped myself up into A, so it was a pretty good feeling to get an overall in my first A race. I want to thank Jay Mittelstaedt since he is my main sponsor

at Jay’s Powersports. I ended up beating Jay, but I guess that is OK.” Eugene Wolff owned the 50Sr class today as he led both motos from the gate to finish checkers. Mitchell Malaney grabbed the second overall spot with a 2/2 day. Nicholas Coplien got crossed up in the start and had to battle with Jr rider Hannah Densow in moto one before grabbing the checkers in third place. In moto two Coplien had an easier time as he cruised to third to grab the final podium spot. 125 Junior was next up and when the gate dropped it was a bar to bar drag race to the holeshot corner where Cody Williams edged out Dakin Coons to be first around the corner onto the track. Williams immediately began putting breathing room between himself and Coons, who now had his hands full battling with Brandon Clifford. Early in lap three Clifford made the pass stick and then held on to the checkers. Ian Malinowski battled almost the entire moto with Lewis Medearis as they changed positions several times. Medearis went down on the final lap leaving Malinowski an easy cruise in for fourth. Williams was out front again at the start in moto two, and right away put some room behind him as he cruised to the overall. Clifford held out in second to the finish with Coons close behind. Dwight Ingalls grabbed the holeshot in +40 moto one while Wayne Slagle edged in front of Thomas Dretzka. Ingalls ran out front all moto without any challengers while Slagle and Dretzka mixed it up for second. Dretzka finally found the drive coming out of Hollub’s Hollow and jumped past Slagle, into second on the white flag lap.
Steve Sorge (915) and Michael Barta battle in +50.
Tom Ferguson powered his Honda down the start to grab the holeshot in moto two, after a fifth place in the first moto. Coons and Dretzka slipped past Ferguson in the roller section, and Dretzka was in the lead as they passed the scoring shack for the first time. Dretzka was starting to open up a small gap on Coons until he overshot the corner. Dretzka held onto the lead, but had Coons on his rear wheel for the rest of the moto. Ferguson finished third and Slagle rounded out the top four. When Sportsman B/C took their first gate drop it was Kail McCormack out front at the holeshot with Cody Williams and Jason Kidd close behind. Williams quickly jumped out front and stayed there to the checkers. Brandon Clifford was on a roll and midway through lap three slipped past McCormack in the sweeper to claim second. Kidd now started putting pressure on McCormack and as they began the final lap Kidd slipped past to take third. Clifford was out front at the beginning of moto two with Williams right behind him. Williams mixed up his lines but couldn’t find one that worked to take the lead until lap two when he powered through the rollers to move out front. McCormack held onto third for another lap before Kidd found a gap to slide through to move up and take away the position. The 250A first moto was red flagged shortly after the start when leader Zach Coons went down hard over the triple. Coons was able to walk off the track after a being treated by the medics, but his day was over. Vaughn Mays grabbed the restart and despite early pressure from Jason Erdmann, stayed out front to the finish. Colton Karl fought his way past Zach Kenning and as he hit the scoring corner on lap three he was on Narel’s back wheel. Narel covered his lines but Karl managed to slip by at the beginning of lap four only to have Narel reclaim the position before the checkers flew. Mays was out front again in moto two and on the way to claiming a 1/1 day for the overall. Erdmann had second locked up. By the time lap two ended the race for third had tightened up as Kenning, Karl, and Narel all went through scoring almost wheel to wheel. Karl made it into third on the next lap, and then Narel got past Kenning on lap four to set up the moto finish positions. Max Steinhorst blasted down the start straight in 85Sr to grab the holeshot with Dal-
ton Peterson in second. As they dropped into the first valley section Peterson took the tight inside line to edge his way out front. Now Steinhorst was being pushed by Cale Ninneman. Ninneman made his move the next time they headed into valley one and came out in second place. Steinhorst was again out front in moto two and this time despite constant pressure all moto from Ninneman he held onto the lead to the finish. Peterson finished third. In the end moto math worked for Steinhorst (3/1) to grab the overall followed by Ninneman (2/2). Ninneman later, “My day went pretty good, I got my first second place overall which feels good. In the second moto we
Riemann put his head down and charged even harder and passed Kilday going into the Daytona corner. As they approached the ski jump for the final time a lapper got in the way and Kilday slipped by. Riemann was determined and stayed hard on the throttle up the hill to the finish. As they jumped at the top Riemann scrubbed just enough to get on the ground first and edge out Kilday by inches for the checkers. Kilday grabbed the moto two holeshot and this time had Chris Zimmerman all over him. Zimmerman bobbled and let Christopher Tilindis and Alex Wille past on lap two. Wille was able to jump past Tilindis at the tunnel 3 jump. Zimmerman recovered from his

were battling all the time, I really had a fun time with Max. He was just a little faster. The track was really nice the second set of motos, the first it was a little muddy but that is racing and I handled it. I want to thank my Mom and Dad for supporting me and letting me race. Also Jason and Kent Erdmann for having such a nice track and letting us ride on it.” Both motos of Open C turned into great racing as Kyle Kilday battled it out with different riders to grab the overall. In moto one Kilday was out front at the first corner with Dillon Riemann on his rear tire. On lap four

Despite the pressure Kilday held on to the finish. Kilday took the overall with a 2/1 day while Zimmerman (3/2) was second and Riemann (1/5) finished the podium. Once the day was over it was obvious to everyone there Erdmann had again pulled off a great season of racing and riding at Sugar Maple MX. Throughout the season he kept changing up sections of track, keeping it chalCYCLE USA, December 2011

lenging but safe and fresh for everyone. Erdman commented on the season, “First off I want to thank Vetesniks for kicking in the extra cash for the A classes today. This was our second season and we are still progressing. It is always great to see the regulars but even more important it seems we keep getting new riders here each race and they like the track. I think our turnout today was our best ever and everyone I talked to was really happy with the track. I cannot thank everyone enough for coming out, riding, and helping out. Pleasure Riders D17 Bonus MX Cayuga, Illinois - October 9 By David Henry Photos by Kathy Gepford
O
ctober 9th marked the annual District 17 bonus points motocross at Pleasure Riders M/C. This year the motocross track saw major updates including bringing back the down and up hill sections that made the track a hotspot back in the 80’s and 90’s. Several hours with a dozer and skid steer also saw the track’s first turn become 12 feet wider than in the past and the majority of the track gaining 6 feet in additional width. Water roads were cut in and they even have a custom made water truck provided by Big Wheel Offroad and Coffman’s Truck Service. With all of the updates the turn out was good and the racing was great. The highlight of the day was the combined Open A, Open B second moto. After doing a double gate drop in the first moto, the riders decided to do a single gate drop in the second moto. This single drop is all the opportunity local racer Dakota Blakeney (185) needed to show his speed on the updated track. Blakeney, a 16 year old from Westville, IL had his Remax Real Estate backed Kawasaki on the gas as the gate dropped. Rounding the first corner with the holeshot was Blakeney, followed closely by Open A riders Corey Deadmond and Mattoon Kawasaki backed Korey Hawkins. While the battle was close between Blakeney and the “A” riders for the first three laps, Blakeney began to pull away as the white flag flew. Blakeney cruised home for the win in the moto and the Open B overall. Deadmond crossed second overall in the moto and first in Open A. The overall in Open A went to Cody McMurray on his Honda 450 with an overall score of 1-2. Deadmond was second with a 4-1 and Hawkins was third with a 2-3. Another great class to watch was Super Mini. Rochester, IL. racer Parker Smith had his Kawasaki on rails as he went on to and
overall win with a 1-1. While Smith was out front trying to make easy work of it, the real story was watching Chance Trigalet battle back from two bad starts. Both motos, Trigalet was just wringing out his Honda for all it had, flying around the track picking off riders and trying to make up time on Smith. Trigalet went on for a 2-2 finish and a hard fought second overall. When asked after the races what it was like to battle back like that, he said, “The track was just awesome today. The start was really deep and I had a couple of bad jumps off of the gate. With the way they have upgraded the track, you can just stay on the gas and it is so much easier to pass. In one corner I had my choice of five different lines and that sure helped. I definitely could not do any of this without the help of my Mom and Dad, Coffmans Truck Service and Big wheel offroad. They really help me a lot.” Taking third overall in Super Mini with a 4-3 was David McClain on his Yamaha. Smith also went on to sweep both motos in the 125 and Schoolboy classes. He had his Honda 125 flying in those motos also and was able to catch and pass several “A” riders who had started before him from the double gate drop. Another young rider who was fast all day and swept all of his motos was Carter Gordon. Gordon went on to take 1-1 finishes in 85Jr and 85 9-13. The biggest class of the day was 250C with 16 riders lined up to do battle. From the drop of the gate in the first moto, it was evident that this day belonged to Honda mounted Jared Keller. The Veedersburg, IN. native went on to convincing wins in both motos. Newton’s Devin Shafer came home second with a 22 and Chance Trigalet
finished third with a 4-5. Shafer went on to sweep both motos in the Open C class and take home the win to go along with his second in 250C. In the +40 and 45 classes it was all Dave Jolin on his Honda 450. After fighting off battles with Brad Adams on his 2012 Kawasaki 450, Jolin won all four motos. Adams crossed with for second place finishes behind Jolin, but won the +30B/C overall after sweeping both motos. In the 65Sr class it was all Jason Gepford. Gepford, on this KTM went on for a 11 set of moto romps. Gepford also put in a

great ride in 85Jr, for second overall. It was a great day of racing at Pleasure Riders. The weather was beautiful for early October, the track was prime and the competition was great. When I talked to one of the track designers, Eric Trigalet, he said, “the track turned out great today. With the new water truck we were able to keep the track in great shape all day long. We definitely plan to keep upgrading the track and look forward to having more races in 2012. Crazy Man’s Hideout HS Veedersburg, In - October 30 By David Dunnuck Photos by Cheryl Dunnuck
T
he Mid-America XC series secured a brand new piece of property near Veedersburg Indiana known as the Crazy Man’s Hideout. In addition to being a brand new track for local riders, MAXC was hosting an AMA National Harescramble which pulled in some big named riders. The ATVs raced on Saturday which was followed by the bikes on Sunday, and there were many activities on Saturday evening. Not only was there a live band and dancing available, a highly contested corn hole tournament was held in conjunction with a costume contest for the kids. The mini races have been heating up with the extremely close racing between AMA Youth rider of the year, Austin Lee and Northern Indiana youngster Mike Witkowski. Witkowski nailed the holeshot while Lee struggled to get the bike fired off the line. Shortly after getting going, Lee had quickly moved through the pack of Super Mini riders, with the exception on Witkowski. Witkowski established a 30 second lead which he never relinquished taking the victory over

Lee in what was definitely an impressive display of skill and talent. The 85cc race also provided parents and spectators with another exciting race between Eric Douglass and Tate Guerrettaz. Guerrettaz was pressuring Douglass throughout the entire race with the third place rider, Kayden Young, quite a distance back. With the elapsed time clearly displayed, Guerrettaz realized he had two laps to make his move for the lead. Unfortunately for Guerrettaz, the race was stopped short of the advertised one hour plus a lap resulting in a second place finish, only seconds behind Douglass. Being the last race of the year, several of the PeeWee racers mounted their 65cc bikes for a test of what they will face next year. While the newcomers were having a great time on the bigger course, Lance Maschino was charging hard from back in the pack and landed a second place finish right behind Camden Hadley from Mooresville. The PeeWee course included a significant portion of the wide open cornfield, allowing the Pre Mix bikes to showcase their top speeds. ond place Louden Feltner. A mix up at the start of the race resulted in a couple of the youth riders jumping the green flag resulting in a 30 second stop and go penalty during the race. While this did not impact the leaders persistence, it did confuse Feltner resulting in a drop back to fourth place. Josh Cecil took advantage of the confusion and landed the second place spot in front of Garrett Mundy. The big bike course had a very good flow with a wide variety of terrain and obstacles for the riders. There were several creek crossings which required careful navigation, with very challenging exits through the mud. In addition to the creeks, there were many steep up and down hill transitions with wide open field sections placed throughout the course. The AA class was first to hit the woods, and blaze the trail for the remaining classes. Andrew Delong established himself as the rider to beat early in the race. Steven Squire, Derick Allen and Jeff Cregg were all in hot pursuit
during the early stages of the race. Cregg eventually moved into the number two spot on the third lap followed by Allen and Squire. The course held up well with the exception of a few small creek sections that ended up creating significant bottle necks for many riders. The top riders had no issue finding their way through the crowds with the help and support of the course marshal crews that were on top of every situation as it developed. Delong maintained his lead throughout the race with Cregg taking second place only 0:29 behind. Squire finished third, but was a significant 9:34 behind second. Hawkeye Downs finale Cedar Rapids, IA - October 15 By Missi Thede
T
his October race was the final event of the season at Hawkeye Downs, as well as in District 22. With the drop of the starting gate came the 250A class. Andy Ney finished the first moto with the checkered flag followed by Coty Mosqueda and then Randy Hanson. This was a good close race, and the second moto proved to be even more exciting. Out of the gates Ney took the lead again while the others closed in and looked like a pack of lions surrounding its prey. Coming into the final laps, Hanson was one on one with Ney when in the back turn Hanson took a pretty ugly crash. It took a little bit before he got himself up and finished out
the race. Ney and Mosqueda took the first and second places again but not without Brett McLaud and Conrad Schipper pushing them. The 85Sr class saw Justin Beach pin the throttle in the first moto as he managed to stay in front of Bryce McLaud, Hailey Peterman, Tyler Miller and Travis Larson. The second moto seemed time for McLaud to take his own path. He moved into the first spot ahead of Beach in the opening lap and only looked ahead from there. The battle for third ended up between Peterman and Miller. After a moto long fight for the spot, Miller passed Peterman to take the third in the final lap. The overall placement ended up with Mclaud, Beach, Miller, Peterman and Larson making that fifth spot look easy.

Fox Valley GP - All Kinds Of Fun Wedron, Illinois - October 30
W
ith the 2011 season, District 17 introduced Gran Prix racing as a new points paying option for their riders. A handful of events, mostly ran late in the season that promised a condensed day of fun, mixing the elements of motocross and hare scrambles. Two, roughly twenty minute motos were to be the norm, and just enough classes that anyone could find something that fit their need. While the events have not seen huge turnouts as of yet, the momentum is building, and more and more riders are starting to pay attention to these excellent events. Fox Valley Off-Road is an easy drive southwest of Chicago, and offers a great mix of varied riding opportunities for everyone. There’s a fair sized motocross track... and it is built in a way to keep those riders coming back over and over (just challenging enough, yet very forgiving). The real draw is a mix of trails winding across the grounds with plenty of hills, trees, and other fun stuff to ride on or get in that mid week practice. Combine it all, and you have a really good riding park that is well kept, clean, and a great place to bring your friends and family. GP racing is new to Fox Valley OffRoad, but promoter Gerhard Ward was one of the major supporters of the creation of the new series. His extra efforts in laying out a rider friendly course helped make it a really great day for everyone. The facility is best known to racers for tight, and challenging hare scrambles events, but today the layout was open, quick, and well balanced for the mixed crowd.
Jared Hall in the 250cc class. Hall also rode in SuperMini, where he won both motos.
Mitchell Ternes and Jack Hansen (#00) lead the combined 14-19 and +30 class start.
Kicking off the racing was the sixteen rider 250cc class with Ryan Moss and Kyleer Vance locked into a battle right from the start as they entered the woods. Vance grabbed the lead position, but by the third lap still had Moss just a few bike lengths back. Travis Ward jumped onto the quick pace as well, back a few seconds in third at the half way point. Those three held their own to the end with Vance and Moss finishing about thirty seconds ahead of Ward. Matthew Walsh was fourth at the finish, back eight seconds, and just ahead of Colton Beard. The second moto delivered one of the day’s closest races. Vance darted out to the lead right away, and this time
Ward was ahead of Moss by the end of the second lap, having made his pass in the motocross section out back. At the half way point Moss was still glued to the young Ward’s fender. It wasn’t until the final lap when Ward opened up a couple second gap and seemed to settle into a pace that kept Moss at bay until the end. Walsh again finished forth as Peter Kavsky improved on his first moto sixth, finishing fifth. Kawasaki mounted Matt Dissell cleaned up in the 14-29 class after coming back from a bad start. His class had a combined start with the +30 riders, and the last rider he had to get by overall was that class leader, Ryan Moss. Moose/ Motosports Factory/ Enduro Engineering backed Moss after the race, “It went pretty good. I got the holeshot and just went from there. Matt (from 14-29) caught me and we raced for a while before he got by. After that he pulled some, and I just rode my own race. The course has a good mix with motocross, hills and the corn field and grass sections mixed in. This is a much more open CYCLE USA, December 2011

layout compared to the hare scrambles they run, and you could even get by without hand guards. The five minute laps are a lot different than twelve on the hare scramble days. It is something anyone could come out and have fun with for sure.” Jesse Keith ran in second in the +30 class right from the start with Steve Perkins third. About half way through, Tim Damron worked up to Perkins, and eventually took over third as Mark Spizzirri finished fifth, about forty seconds back. Ryan George finished seventh, “It was a lot of fun out there. Nice open course, and I had a good race with some of the guys from Megacross. I’m usually more of a woods guy, and the trails they put in for us are a lot wider than a hare scrambles, so it is pretty easy going. I think it is a lot more fun than any other type of racing as it has a little of everything, and a casual feel to the day.”
The second moto saw the same results. Dissell jumped out and led the overall group for the 14-19 class win. Moss led the same top five riders across the line at the end. Jesse Keith, after finishing second in +30, “The GP was great today. The rain is holding off, the track is good, so we lucked out and had a great day. I ride both hare scrambles and moto, so this was perfect for me. I’d tell anyone to come out for one of these events. Particularly if you know someone who hasn’t raced, this is easier than either style of racing, and a great idea.” Dean Herman finished mid pack in +30, and was just as excited about the day as he could have been after a win, “I grew up as a motocrosser, and with a little boy growing up now I have been more into the woods lately. When I heard about this, I thought it would be perfect. It was fantastic today. Fast sections, hills, everything you could

with the mix and motocross portions of the track as he won the Open class. Settling for second in both motos was the very talented off-road rider Kyleer Vance. Hall’s Cycles/ Moose/ Gaerne boots/ Scott backed Vance after moto two, “It is good to come out here and do a little of everything all in one race. Its fun seeing the motocross and hare scrambles guys mingle a little. The open layout and motocross stuff is sort of different to me. I wrapped up the points this year in the Hare Scrambles AA class in District 17, so it has been a pretty awesome year, and this was a fun event.” Open class rider John Conley out of Fox Valley Cycles was one of the many riders trying a GP for the first time, “I’ve been racing with Gerhard at Mendota for fifteen years now, and luckily I came out here a couple weeks ago and practiced so that helped. The second moto was more of the same, as Hall rode almost uncontested for another win. This time out though, McDonald got the upper hand and beat Boyd by a few seconds at the flag for second overall as Noah Taylor went 5-4 for forth O/A. The 65cc class had the top four riders finish in the same order in each moto. Travis Ward topped them all by about twenty seconds both times. Matt Zebro in +25A.
im Zebro was the master of the +25 class as Spring Creek Park competition continued for the last race of the calender year, but the first race for accumulating points toward next year’s series championships. Zebro jumped into the early lead as the +25 pack roosted into action in moto one. Mike Luoma and Pat McNamara settled into the 2-3 pursuit positions with Matt Blaiser running fourth. Zebro had an edge over them this time out and held steady for the whole moto, taking a solid win. Luoma held on for second with Blaiser displacing McNamara for third late in the race. Moto two started in much the same way as
Zebro surged to the holeshot and led into the sand whoops. Blaiser was running a little more aggressively and held second for the first two laps. Luoma dispatched McNamara on lap two then closed on Blaiser. At about the halfway point he took over second from Blaiser. McNamara and Scoot Steinle rounded out the top five. As previously mentioned, this race would premiere the 2012 Super Series and entry numbers were decent at about 500. Typically enough, many riders were entering new classes and some were running new equipment so there were some changes from status quo. The weather was pretty warm for so late in the year with the high for the day at about 80 degrees. The 85cc 12-15 class got off to a great start for Ben Adamson as he torqued into the early lead over Blaze Best and Hunter Teichrib. Adamsom and Best continued out front with Luke Hempen coming up to steal away third fro Teichrib on the second lap. Nearing the end of the moto with Adamson maintaining a nice lead over Best, he landed off the back triple and collided with a downed bike as a rider crashed just in front of him. He was too shaken to get up right away and Best

quickly went by for the win. Hempen and Teichrib took second and third with fourth going to Zach Harris. Adamson scored ninth for the moto. Moto two started off great for Adamson as it looked like he was going to make off with the holeshot again, but it turned disastrous as he went down after topping the small
rise in turn one. He had to DNF with an injury as they carried him off the track. Best took advantage to run out front for the duration and scored a 1-1 overall victory for the day. Teicrib was second, about five seconds short of Best’s time at the flag. Holding the 34-5 positions were Hempen, Alex Ingalls and Harris.
The 250A class moto one featured Joe Perron running in front all the way. Robert Droher held second for most of the moto, but lost time on Perron and fell under pressure from Cody Lackore late in the race. Lackore got by on the white flag lap to hold second behind Perron. Nick Jackson followed Droher in to take fourth with Mike Bottolfson fifth. Moto two followed a similar pattern with Perron in control for the whole moto. Droher ran second for the duration with Lackore in pursuit, giving him second overall for the day. Jackson and Bottolfson once again rounded out the top five.
Robert Droher leads Cody Lackore high above the Spring Creek track.

KMSR Dual Sport Ride
Allenton, Wisconsin - October 16 By Carrie Swan
W
hat do you get with the quiet hum of a motorcycle, scenic fall setting, and a lot of good people? A dual sport ride sponsored by Kettle Moraine Sport Riders from West Bend, Wisconsin. On October 16th, KMSR sponsored their fifth annual dual sport ride. Dual sport riding is becoming more popular here in Wisconsin thanks to the hard work and dedication of a couple clubs. The club has collaborated with more than 30 land owners to develop 60 miles of off-road trails that the KMSR club opens for one day only each year. It was a beautiful day where the air and leaves were crisp, and you could smell fall in the air, and of course that wonderful smell of a motorcycle that gets the adrenaline going to get out there and ride. 147 riders met at Mike’s Motorsports in Hartford, Wisconsin to do just that. Get out and ride together, some family, some friends, some new to the sport some more experience but never less they all had one thing in common and that was the plan to “enjoy the ride”. This is an event where you can become one with your motorcycle as you wind down the scenic roads, but you can also see what you can’t from the road. The trails offer a beautiful landscape, a stream babbling through the woods and of course people who were once strangers becoming friends along the way. Along these trails the

District 15 Hill Climb Championship Cayuga, Indiana - September 11 By Bud Northrup Photos by Gordon Green
T
he Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club hosted a double header hill climb weekend on September 10 & 11, with the Sunday event being the 2011 Indiana State Championships. Andy Fortner and Mike Pulver emerged as the two top riders Sunday. Fortner took two class titles and the Fast Time award. Pulver didn’t win any ‘regular’ classes, but he did take the win in the coveted King of the Hill special class for the ten fastest riders of the day. The Fast Time contest was quite entertaining, the lead changing hands several times. Matt Peters set an early fast time in the 250cc class with a 4.060 second run on his CR250. Fortner then turned a 4.047 second time on his first ride in the Senior class, to take that class lead. That time held up for the class title with Pulver close behind with a 4.089 second run. In second round action, Cody Jenner flew his Honda high over the top in the 600cc class in a blazing 4.001 seconds, moving in to the class lead and also setting a new Fast Time. But ‘Fast Andy’ lived up to his name once more, sailing his Honda over the top in blistering 3.986 seconds to claim the class win and set a new Fast Time which would hold up for that award. The King of the Hill contest is a one run, winner take all class for the ten fastest riders of the day, regardless of the class. Cody Jenner got into the ‘King’ class due to his 4.001 second time in the 600cc class, and carded a 4.052 second time to take the lead with only Pulver and Fortner left to run. Pulver pegged his throttle and held it on, riding a wheelie the
last 80 feet or so that turned into a loop right at the timing lights, sending the bike over the top upside down without a rider. But Pulver was in control (one hand on one handlebar) when the clock stopped at 3.930 seconds to take the lead. Fortner responded with zeal, and

came close, but his 4.010 second run came up short. Levi Peters was the only other double class winner. Levi took the 65cc class title with an excellent 5.115 second time on his KX65 in the first round. Cline Garriott was second with Andrew Fortner third. Levi’s first round time of 4.758 seconds
was also good for the win in the 85Jr class. Reece Hutton claimed second with Fortner third. Levi’s winning time was also good for the Youth Fast Time award. Other Youth class champions were Brodie Bennett in the 50cc class with Blake Bowyer second and Jadyn Aliprandini third. Jacob Bell was the 85Sr champion, with Bryce Spickard second and Alissa Harnish third. Matt Peters, from Neoga, Illinois, had an exceptionally good ‘perfect’ night at the Saturday event. Matt won all three classes he entered, taking the 250cc, 450cc, and 600cc
class wins, and also claimed the Fast Time of the Day award with a 3.956 second run on his KTM380. New twist at Joliet MX
Joliet, Illinois - September 10 By Larry Banks
A
beautiful late summer day had many out to enjoy an awesome day of racing. As always, Justin Martino and the track crew at Joliet MX worked hard to groom the track so the event would be its very best. The Vet Open Invitational is an event that Joliet MX hopes will morph into a Vet Mini Series in 2012 with boosted purses and bonuses for the Vet class winners. Thanks to Willy World and the Surface Ride Shop four of the Vet A class winners had an additional $50 boost to their purse on top of the regular payout, the +25B and +30B class winners received a $100 gift certificate and one Vet riders was selected to win the event’s Iron Man award, and was given an awesome set of Thor gear. The very talented, fan favorite Pro racer Tommy Hofmaster was also at the event to do a MX school and some racing as well. There were many compliments about how good Tommy’s school was and how much it helped the riders. There was a “Bike Blessing” in honor and recognition of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Then there was the racing! Yes, good racing in the heats and in the mains. The 125 2 Stroke racing has been incredible all year in District 17 and they would not disappoint at Joliet MX. Brian Krohn was on the pipe all night and wouldn’t be denied going 1-1 in the heat race and main over Conner Robinson and new comer to the class Kyle Poska. The 14/24 class had some real bar banging action. While JJ Kent won the heat race ahead of Robert Dixon and Aj Miksys, it was Dixon taking the win over Kent and Miksys in the Main. Mitch Swanson rode well in forth, but, slightly over powered on his 250 2 Stroke by the 450 thumpers underneath the rest of the class. Both the +25B heat and main were won by the rock steady Jason Skudma.
Cody Siler turned heads in the 250B race, including Tommy Hofmaster who said “man that kid was hauling, huh?” Tommy was on the track at the same time in the 250A race and had an on track view of the up and coming Siler, who dominated the B race. A stacked and always competitive 250C class was won by Jacob Cinkos with heat race winner Kody Smith taking second ahead of Dave Gregory. Smith just didn’t get the start he needed in the main to stay in front of the very motivated, hard charging Cinkos. Hofmaster got the holeshot and ran away with the plus 30A main and Rev, Jim Cherry and Paul Cherry had an intense battle for second. It was Rev taking second behind Hofmaster with the Cherry brothers snapping at his heals. No one was surprised that Tommy won every race that he was in. It was a thrill for everyone to watch him crank out laps on a track that was freshly redone. Greg Pollack battled to the end edging out the always hard charging Brian Carey for the win in +30B race. More Mini racing for the fans to enjoy had Kevin Huddleston take the wins in the heat and main ahead of Ian Murphy and Wojtasow Thomas in the 50Jr class. In 50Sr, John Perovic won the heat and main and it was Joe Quest in second leading Hunter Billingsly, Wyatt Mattson and Noah Miller to fill the top five. The always smiling James McDannel aboard his Polini took the win in the very popular 65 Beginner class. In 65Jr Conner Burger won the heat race, but it was Christian Swieton taking the win in the main followed by Burger and Tim Lowe. Nolan Dickinson won the 65Sr class. A very stacked 85 Beginner class saw the heat race podium spots go to Brett Guffey, Dylan Roesch and Edward Vanhauser. In the main, it was Guffey and Roesch repeating while Ryan York dug deep and rode his heart out to a podium spot in third. One of the biggest classes of the night
was 85 Open, in which the ever smooth and talented Eric Mack won without much challenge while Brett Guffey and Hunter Grampp battled hard in both the heat and main. Some ladies showed up to dice and it was Kaylor Speirer winning the Girl’s class and Kayla Miller on top in the Woman’s class. One might have argued that “C” stands for Crazies when it came to the Open C class competitors, but while there was some intense racing complete with a bunch of bumping and grinding, everyone went home healthy. The Open C podium wa topped by Kody Smith, Bradley Hrach and Ryan Smith. It was a great day filled with some great activities, a lot of great racing. Oh Yeah, It was the very talented and gutsy Vet Racer Paul Cherry who won the event’s Iron man award and the Thor gear. And, congrats to Paul and Jen for birth of their healthy new baby boy, Liam. Lucky Bucky Dual Sport a Hit Cross Plains, WI - Oct. 22 By Gordon Lunde

unshine? 60 degree temps? Is this really the day for the annual Bucky Badger dual sport ride? Yes, it’s true. The day was perfect for a fall ride through the hills and valleys of south central Wisconsin! The first two years of this event were wet and cool, not exactly great weather for a 120 mile ride in such beautiful countryside. So, the great conditions for today’s ride were welcomed by all 165 riders. The Bucky started many years ago as an enduro event. For several reasons it all came to an end and there were no enduro, scrambles or dual sport rides in the area. Azzie MX closes big season Lake Mills, Wisconsin - October 9 By Dave Hollub
W
ho would have thought Aztalan would finish the MX season without a single rainout, in fact not even a big mud race. As it turned out, even for the season ending October race it was sunny and in the mid-eighties. 480 entries enjoyed a perfect day to finish off the season at the Schuessler/ Leonard Memorial race. As 50Sr hit the holeshot corner to start the day several riders hit the ground in a big pile. James Schellinger and James Schmeling were the only two leaders that made it through unscathed. Schmeling moved out front before the first lap was over while Dylan Knoch and Aidan McCormick were chasing Schellinger. Carter Biese picked himself up and after a hard charge moved into the lead by the end of lap three. Biese pulled the moto two holeshot and stayed out front all the way to the checkers. Brandon Martyniak was running second early. Eugene Wolff made it around Martyniak late on lap two. Schellinger ran a solid race in fourth place. Biese went 1/1 for the overall with Wolff (4/2) second and Schellinger (3/4) claiming third. Nate Knottnerus edged out his twin brother Neil for the Sportsman moto one holeshot and then settled into a pace that kept him out front all moto. Jason Bernhardt held third with Maxwell Malkmus and Joe Natzke close behind before Malkmus made a pass on the white flag lap. Knottnerus repeated in moto two with a solid holeshot and run to the finish out front. Austin Teer edged Brandon Clifford at the holeshot for second but couldn’t hang on long as Clifford got by him in the west end. Justin Wolf put on a great charge as he battled through the pack after a bad start. Wolf picked off Bernhardt on lap three in the west end and then got by Teer by the barn. Kirsten Raemisch grabbed the holeshot in moto one of Woman’s class and immediately put a gap on the field. Ashley Densow held off Kaylen Pellmann but as they went over the plateau on lap two Pellmann had pulled ahead. Pellmann went down in the next section and by the time she back up and racing Jade Wennlund had passed her. Pellmann charged hard and by the time the checkers closed off moto one she was back in third. Wennlund pulled the holeshot in moto two but Raemisch and Pellmann both got by her in the west end. Densow used the plateau to jump over Wennlund to grab third. Raemisch took the moto win to seal the overall. As the +50 class rounded the holeshot Tim Boblin edged out Kurt Andrews as first onto the track. Andrews pushed hard and by the first time over the plateau was out front 34 CYCLE USA, December 2011
with Ken Petrillo in third. By the beginning of lap three Tom Dretzka had fought his way into third from a mid-pack start. Dretzka got by Boblin before the white flag flew but Boblin didn’t give up. As they jumped the plateau Boblin slipped back into second only to have Dretzka regain the position in the final section before the checkers came out. In moto two it Boblin used the tight inside line to steal the honors. At the plateau Petrillo was out front with Boblin, Rich Crouthers, and then Dretzka in tow. Dretzka pushed hard and by the next time over the plateau was in second and gaining on Petrillo. In the final two laps the two swapped positions but when the

checkers flew Dretzka was out front to take the win. Chris Himes was first around the corner in +25A moto one but soon had Tyler Smulders all over him. Greg Hochmuth was running third and trying to keep Matthew Maier behind him. Smulders moved past Himes midway through lap two and was able to get a small lead. Maier kept pushing Hochmuth until lap three when he finally found the opening to slip past and then quickly got by Himes. On lap four just after going over the plateau Maier closed in on Smulders, then made the pass just before the scoring section. Himes once again grabbed the holeshot
in moto two edging out Jeff Bennett at the corner. Smulders moved out front before the first time over the plateau and soon after Maier was also in front of Himes. As the white flag came out Maier started twisting the throttle even harder and as they headed into the west end looked to be closing the gap. On the final trip over the plateau Maier was out front with Smulders close behind but unable to retake the lead. Jason Mack and Justin Wolf were bar to bar down the start straight in 125Jr moto one before the inside line gave Mack the edge. Wolf made his move right away as they headed for the west end then began stretching out a gap on the class. Ian Malinowski took over second with Riley Telfer close behind by the time the checkers flew. Wolf grabbed a good lead at the moto two holeshot and never looked back. Josh Jensema edged out Malinowski at the corner with Josh Dearborn in fourth. Malinowski slipped past Dearborn at the wall jump and then passed Jensema in the west end. Jensema pushed hard but couldn’t get by the hard running Malinowski. Telfer was mid pack at the holeshot but by the start of lap two had battled up into fourth where he finished. When +40 took their first gate drop it was Ronald Lasco powering his Yamaha down the start to grab the holeshot. Tom Dretzka and Daryl Willing were close behind, setting their sights on the lead position. Dretzka made the pass for the lead on lap three but Lasco held off Willing’s attempts to find any opening to move up. In moto two as they hit the holeshot corner it was Lasco on the inside edging out both Willing and Dretzka. This time Lasco opened up a small lead by the time he hit the plateau. Willing had his hands full holding off Dretzka’s challenges until lap three when Dretzka got by him in the sand. Dretzka began running down Lasco and before the lap was over Dretzka was out front. Willing also got around Lasco before the white flag came out. Dretzka held on for the moto win to seal the overall. Matthew Menzer continued a season long streak of holeshots in Open A as he edged out both Zach Coons and Matthew Maier in moto one. Both Coons and Maier quickly jumped out front and began a battle for the lead that would stretch to the checkers. Coons was not able to shake Maier off his rear tire but held him from making the pass. Joseph Dretzka put the power to the ground in moto two as he pulled a big holeshot. Dretzka held off Philbrick until their second time through the west end where Philbrick pulled out front and cruised to the moto win. Coons with Maier on his rear tire again was now chasing Dretzka and before the lap ended both had slipped past. Maier did everything he could to reverse the moto one finish but just couldn’t get the opening to
slip by and ended up settling for third at the finish. Coons (1/2) and Maier (2/3) topped the overall while Philbrick turned his second moto win into the edge for the third spot overall. When Open C/2 hit the holeshot corner in moto Neil Knottnerus was out front and soon gaining some breathing room ahead of Justin Hove and Justin Hall. Kaylen Pellmann was fighting her way through the pack and launched herself into fourth place. Pellmann began pushing Hove and worked her way past him into third right behind Hall. Knottnerus went down on lap two leaving
Hall take over the lead. Knottnerus got going right away and before the checkers flew had slipped back into second with Pellmann and then Hove right behind. Knottnerus was again out front at the holeshot in moto two and this time was able to stay there to the finish. Hall and Hove ran second and third all moto. Knottnerus, “I took off in the first one and holeshotted that. I led for a lap and a half when I came up over this section by the spine. I don’t know what happened but I went over the bars. As hard as it was to believe Aztalan made it through the season with a streak of great race day weather that helped make it a fantastic season. With the end of the races on Saturday the awards event began. The Fun Valley crew outdid themselves with a potluck for everyone. There was tasty food brought by all and the pork was out of this world. After everyone had their fill, the awards ceremony commenced. The setting could not have been more perfect. Everyone brought lawn chairs and with the weather playing its part everyone sat outside and relished in the year’s final tally. A great amount of appreciation was shown to the track members and volunteers for running the show (flaggers, scorers, concession stand etc.). Starting off the awards were the 50Jr. riders, Zane Brownsberger took the honors of first place of the series. Every one of the riders whether or not they received a trophy or plaque should be very proud of what they have done this year at the track and all around. Some of the multiple award winners included Corey Jacobe (14-24 B/C and 125 Open), Dylan Smith (65Jr and 85Jr), Chase Conis (250 and Open B), Austin Voorhees (Quad B and Quad B Production) and last but not least, Sean Taylor (Quad A Production and Quad A). Arenacross returns to Madison Madison, Wisconsin - november 11 - 13 By Dave Hollub
T
he AMA Arenacross Series made a return to Wisconsin after a nine year absence. As the third stop on the 2011-12 series the racing action was great, as the riders were all still fresh and looking to grab an early points lead toward the season championship. The Babbitt’s Monster Energy/ Kawasaki team led by reigning champion Tyler Bowers and Wisconsin native Chad Johnson dominated the podium both nights. Michael Willard got a great jump in the AX Lites Friday night Main event and soon was opening up a gap on the rest of the class. Dalton Carlson was running bar to bar with Steven Mages as they battled for second place. Carlson finally wrapped up second when Mages bobbled on lap 10. Next Mages had to contend with Travis Sewall who had battled his way through the pack. Sewall was able to make a block pass in the final corner to steal the final podium position as the checkers flew. Jeff Gibson launched his Tuf Racing Honda down the start for the AX class holeshot with Nathan Skaggs and Chad Johnson close behind. Johnson kept steady pressure on Skaggs and finally found an opening to move past on lap four. Kelly Smith was now pushing Skaggs but by the end of lap five Smith also maneuvered past Skaggs. Tyler Bowers made the pass on Skaggs and began chasing Smith. After a couple laps Bowers got around Smith and then made a quick pass

on Johnson for second. Bowers ran out of time before he could catch Gibson as the checkers flew to end the night. Gibson later commented, “I got the holeshot and was able to run my own pace so I was thankful for that. The track was taking a beating and was starting to fall apart. The whoops were definitely falling apart and the corners were really slippery but we have a really good bike. My whole team just did a re-
ally good job and praise the Lord I’m up here. Thanks a lot.” Tanner Whipple took the 65cc win followed by Brennan Wages. Dalton Hein grabbed the final podium spot as he made a pass just before the finish to edge out Kaleb Carman. The 85cc win went to Brian Krohn with Nick Wallace and Chad Saultz close behind. Saturday night started with a track party that gave race fans a chance to walk and check out the track up close while meeting the riders and teams. Entertainment was provided by a local Battle of The Bands winner Modern Mod. The UW-Madison Army ROTC color guard presented the Stars and Stripes during the opening ceremonies. Willy Browning got the jump out of the gate and immediately took the lead in the AX Lites Main with Michael Willard close behind. Steve Mages sat in third with TJ Phillips and Dave Ginolfi battling for fourth. Browning was stretching out some breathing room by the second trip over the Finish Catapult and cruised to the win without any challenges. By lap three Willard had his hands full keeping Mages behind him, and had to defend his position all the way to the finish. Travis Sewall moved up a couple of positions and by lap five was right on the rear wheel of Ginolfi. Two laps later Sewall found a line around him and made the pass stick for a fourth place finish. Browning later said “I got a sweet start, I have been getting them all weekend so I love that. I put in some sweet laps with no mistakes. I got a little bit of arm pump for some

reason later in the race. Willard is going good, we grew up together so that is always good racing him and better if I beat him. I just need a good finish in the AX class next.” When the AX class hit the gate it was Nathan Skaggs aboard his Honda first around the holeshot with Chad Johnson right on him through the whoops section. Josh Demuth was running third ahead of teammate Tyler Bowers at the end of the whoops. Johnson immediately went to work on Skaggs and by the next time through the whoops was out front. Skaggs now was getting heavy pressure from Demuth and Bowers in every corner. On lap three Bowers got a two for one as he found the hotline and passed both Skaggs and Demuth at once. Bowers set his teammate Johnson and the lead position. Bowers pushed Johnson for a couple laps and then on lap seven hit the whoops with enough momentum to sweep past for the lead. Bowers now began adding breathing room behind him every lap while Johnson cruised in second. Jeff Gibson and Kelly Smith had now joined the battle for third place by lap seven. Demuth was able to get around Skaggs for third making it look like a Babbitts sweep. Gibson tried making the pass on Skaggs just before the whoops on lap ten but there was enough contact to slow Gibson down and Skaggs hit the ground. Smith took advantage and jumped into fourth with Gibson recovering quick enough to stay in fifth. Bowers later commented on his night “I didn’t get the holeshot tonight but I had a really good run through the whoops so I got by a couple guys right away. I saw there were a lot of really fast guys ahead of me and I wasn’t happy about it. I just kept making good passes and finally got around Johnson and tried to keep the lead from there. D15 Season Ending Event Akron, Indiana - Oct. 29/ 30 By Becky Stichter

Devin Hudnut was the overall winner. Hudnut was new to racing this year, and has improved every race. In the 85cc (12-15) class Joey Neely was out of the gates first in moto one. Joshua Taylor and David Stanker pressured hard from behind. Neely and Taylor had a great battle, with Taylor taking the win this moto. In moto two Isaiah Shelton was fastest out of the
t's hard to believe that this weekend was the last race of this season. The staff of Reads Racing Unlimited held the season closer at Hangtime, the weather was good, the track was in great condition, and it was a really good time. Along with two good days of racing, there were special events for Halloween, and a fund-raiser for Wyatt Evans, a rider who sustained a severe injury Labor Day weekend. Races on Saturday were run in a 3-moto format. In 250C Evan Denney was out of the gates first in moto one, with Kaleb McDonald and Kody Elder following. After getting a horrible start, Nicholas Craig was at the back of the group. He was pulling the throttle hard, and kept passing riders. Craig caught up to McDonald and Elder, and passed both of them to finish second. In the second moto Denney was out of the gates first again, but this time he had Craig pressuring from behind. Jacob Shaw and McDonald were next in line. Denney didn't let the pressure get to him, and won again. Craig finished second, followed by Shaw. In the third moto, Denney and Craig battled hard, and this time Craig got past Denney for the win. Some others stepped it up this moto, with Adam Palmer and David Stanker battling for Devin Hudnut in the 50cc 4-8 oil injected class. third. Palmer held the others off, finishing third this moto. line ahead of Neely. In the 85cc (9-11) class, mounted on a KTM, Justin Stichter of Frazier Motorsports, and Suzuki rider Evan Faucett battled hard in all three motos. In the first moto, Stichter was out of the gates ahead of Faucett and held on for the win. There was also a battle for third place between Shadd Miser and Cameron Middlston. Miser was able to finish ahead of Middlston. The second moto was much like the first, only this time Faucett was out of the gates first. Stichter pressured, but wasn't able to pass and Miser rode in third again. Moto three played out like the first, with Stichter leading the group, and finishing 1-2-1. Faucett finished second overall. Middlston finished ahead of Miser this moto, but Miser took third overall, running 3-3-4. There was some good riding in the 125cc 2-stroke class as Tanner Walters ran 1-1-1, followed by Caden Roberts in each moto. Behind the leaders, there was some good racing being done by Kameron Graddy, Brandon Yeiter, Chris Trowbridge and Hayden Clark. KTM rider, Evan Denney, took charge in the Supermini class running 1-1-1. Garrett Snodgrass, Jarred Wright and Joshua Taylor had good battles in all three motos. Snodgrass finished second overall, running 3-2-2, followed by Wright. After all the races were done, there was a "buddy race" as part of the fund-raiser for Wyatt Evans, followed by special events for Halloween. There were free pumpkins, supplied by Rochester Optimist Club. A pumpkin carving contest for anyone who wanted to participate, won by Addison Clouse. There was a free chili pot, carmel apples, and a huge bonfire for all to enjoy. It was a great night to hang out and have fun. The weather was a little cooler Sunday,
but still no complaints, considering it was the end of October. The quads were on the track first. The Quad B class and Youth Production quads were out at the same time. For the Quad B class, Hunter Ridenour ran 1-1 as Blake Sarver swept both motos of the of the Youth class. Clayton Strunk of the 50 cc open class was able to run 1-1, ahead of David Hudnut. They both looked like they were having fun
out there! In the 85cc (12-15) class, Joshua Taylor was the fastest, running 1-1. Both motos, the riders fell into their positions, and didn't have a lot of position changes. David Stanker finished second, followed by Nick Raseta. The 85cc (9-11) class had all kinds of position changes. In the first moto, Justin Stichter took the holeshot and led the group. Evan Faucett hit Stichter's back tire in the first turn, causing Faucett to go down. With Faucett falling, Stichter didn't have as much pressure
this moto, and finished first. Faucett did some impressive riding, and was able to work his way to a second place finish. In the second moto Faucett managed to stay out of a messy first turn, taking the lead. Stichter and Trevor Lomperski were two of the riders that went down, and ended up being DNF’s. Faucett won this moto, with Shadd Miser finishing second. In the 50cc (7-8) class Clayton Servaty ran 1-1, followed by Kennan Leis, Kamden Graddy and Max Naselroad. These 50cc riders keep improving all the time. Continued on page 45

Aztalan Dirt Track Finale Lake Mills, Wisconsin - September 17
I
t’s hard to believe the racing season ending, this being the last one at Aztalan. Hot chocolate and coffee were necessary for the night, along with winter coats, hats, and mittens. This track is a crowd favorite, so I’m sure they didn’t mind the cooler weather. The track was prepped and in great condition after the rain we had the night before. It was cool and breezy throughout the day which dried the track to perfection. The Youth 50cc Shaft division was so close in points that this race would determine the championship. Ethan Jahnke and Colton Witucki started early on to strive for the win. Jahnke led with Witucki close behind, but coming into lapped traffic was determining what line they had to take when passing the slower bikes. It was close a few times, but Jahnke won by a bike length while Ava Stobb finished in third. It was a blast to watch these youngsters have their fun. The Open class had us out of our seats watching as they usually do. Erich Olson, from Appleton had the quick holeshot with Charlotte Kainz, Ian Steen, and Danny Vrana chasing behind. All five leading bikes were in a straight line, then came Vrana with a clean pass on Steen for third. A few laps later, Vrana and Steen were still swapping positions before Steen went down in turn four. At the finish line, Olson captured it, with Kainz be-
Terry Vestal and Charlotte Kainz watching the races.
hind, while Vrana, Luke Fox, and Kevin Kilkenny rounded the top five. The RGN (Regional Grand National) series riders made an appearance and showed us what a enjoyable class this is. The top five finishes in the A class were dominated by the powerful Yamahas. Kevin Kilkenny took the lead from the start, but not for long with Charlotte Kainz claiming it on the second lap. Kainz had a good lead on the others with Kilkenny, Andrew Mauk, Terry Vestal, and Brian Slominski respectively following behind this young lad. Another entertaining class was the 125-250cc’s, which was conquered by girl power, three ladies and a gentleman. Alexia Hoffmann, of Beaver Dam, pulled the lead but was overpowered by Charlotte Kainz. Kainz won this race, followed by Hoffmann, Parker Lange, and Julieanna Grasser. We all had to keep our eyes on the track for the Quad B class. Tyler Henning of Mayville nailed the clean holeshot. Kyle Jirousek was in second followed by Jarrett Marshall and Brett Durant. There were plenty of passing attempts made, none of them successful as riders would get out of the groove and lose the necessary momentum. Henning captured the checkered while the others were in a pack lagging behind. Well, this concludes the last race of the season in Aztalan for District 16 Flat Track racing. Special thanks to the members and volunteers for the hard work and dedication to us racing families and friends. Overall, it has been a good season, and it Quad rider Jake Foti. treated us well. 2.Hayden Zurn 3.Jacob Trosper 4.Devin Massie 5.Jordan Carroll See you next year at 85cc: 1.Brady Lange 2. Some of the fun Saturday night.
D15 Final MX continued from page 43 Nicholas Craig, mounted on a Yamaha ran out front in both motos of the Open C class. Evan Denney finished second overall, followed by David Stanker. In the 65cc (7-9) class Corbin Moore ran 1-1. Behind him there were some good battles going on. In the first moto, Colyn Iden pulled ahead of the others, followed by Aidan Griffis and Kaden Polito. Iden finished second this moto. In the second moto, Dalton Edmondson had a much better ride, and finished second, followed by Polito. Iden still finished second overall, running 2-4.
It was a good weekend of racing. A lot of riders weren't ready for the end of the season, but here it is. The staff of Reads Racing Unlimited is planning to have open rides on Sundays as long as the weather holds out, so for some there will be a few more good rides... but the racing is done for the season. Now we just get to start making our plans for 2012!
