From the back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman If you think at all like I do, you are asking yourself if this never ending winter will ever be over. I think I have logged more hours behind the snowblower this winter than I did in the saddle last season. There has to be something wrong with that scenario. We’ve had enough winter and are anxiously awaiting spring and outdoor riding. Problem becomes that it really does get here quickly, and then I’m not ready or anywhere near the physical shape I should be in. Don’t procrastinate, the season will be here in about 5 or 6 weeks. Once again we have a full calendar of events for the upcoming season. All of our disciplines have full schedules and we are looking to see an increase in membership. We have eight new dirt bike instructors and will begin a training program as soon as the bikes arrive. Look for the schedule of beginning classes on our web site. Speaking of websites we are working on improvements to our site and at getting online sign-up for the district up and running. This will hopefully happen within the next few weeks. Once again we had a booth at the International Motorcycle Show in Minneapolis that was a success. Thanks to Dave Wesseling for leading that effort and putting together a great presence. We continue our efforts to fight the Lead Ban and legislation has been proposed at the national level to fix the problem. The stay on the current legislation ends in May. Make sure you let your senator and representatives that the current law is not acceptable and needs to be corrected. Financially we are hanging in there thanks to our budget committee’s accuracy on membership numbers and setting us up with guidelines that have been right on target. Other happenings this season include area and regional qualifiers for Loretta Lynn’s, the Pro National Motocross and a Pro Quad Motocross.

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... Spring Creek will also be hosting the second annual Motocross Safety Summit the Friday before the Pro national. This is open to anyone that would like to know what is happening on that scene. Last year’s summit was really educational. Lastly, I picked up a new mount for this season. All of you racers that passed me while I spent countless laps kicking in vain to get the old bike fired up will not be seeing that happen anymore. This one has fuel injection and the magic button. I highly recommend the magic button. This year I can spend my energy on riding instead of kicking. I’m really looking forward to this year’s riding/racing season, and hope that all of you are as well. I hope to see you all of you at some of our events this coming season. Mike Motosports Park News. Rumors are true! Motosports Park in Byron, Illinois is happy to announce the signing of Marc Peters to redesign and build both the Hilltop and Legacy tracks. Marc is a well respected industry track builder who works for all five factories as well as maintaining the Loretta Lynns National course. Marc also works several pro nationals. We are excited to have his help bringing our historic course into the 21st century. Listen up Quad riders, we heard you. Expect the Hilltop track to be a California national style course with considerably more length and room. The Legacy track will get an overhaul as well. Look for a wider, safer, fun, national caliber layout with new sections that lend themselves to the 4-stroke motorcycle. The emphasis on both courses will be safety, racing/passing lines, and fun! Last fall we completed construction of 14 RV parking spots with power and water hookups. The spring rebuild will also help open up more parking and improve sight lines. We have been steadily improving our program over the past few seasons and this is a big step toward our goals. I am so thankful for the support of the Kelsey and Ziesk families along with so many others. Now we add Marc Peters to the team for our 43rd season of racing at Motosports Park. This season promises to the best yet. Work is scheduled to begin April 1st and we will be ready to race May 1. Keep you fingers crossed for an early and dry spring! Crow River Wheelers Ice Race Hutchinson, Minnesota - February 12 By Troy Boettcher

T

his ice race for bikes and quads was the second in the last two years put on by the Crow River Wheelers, and this year the race was part of the Stud Club Ice Racing Series. The race was held at Gopher Campfire, located northeast of Hutchinson, MN. Leading up to this race the high temperatures were in the single digits and the lows were in the double digit negatives. But race day ended up to be the first day of a big warm up and it was in the 30’s and then after the sun came out it got into the 40’s. So it was going to be a great day to be at the races. The track turned out to be in good condition, and it was long and fast. The racing started out with the 50cc Micro bike class with ages of 4-8. I love these classes as these kids are the future of our sport, and it is so fun to see these kids with a smile on their face whether they win or lose. For #888 Brock Bjerke on his TTR50 with training wheels, this was his very first race. It was great to see him out there and he did really well. This race was very close between Josh Fedder Jr. and Nate Minster, both on Yamahas. It ended with Josh taking the win, as they were followed by Jackson Lindberg on his Cobra who had great starts all day. In the Mini and Schoolboy classes, there were a couple of Suzuki RM85’s running at the front of the pack with Cole and Tevin Liimatainen aboard along with the Yamaha of Jeremiah Lindberg. It was pretty impressive how fast these kids were turning laps on the 85s. Cole ended up winning both classes with Tevin and Jeremiah swapping second and third in the two different classes. In the Pro Open bike class it was a close battle but in the end it was Jacob Bostrom on his Honda coming out on top. In some of the turns there were grooves that formed that if they could hit that line, they could really lay the bike over and have very good corner speed. If you missed it and were carrying a lot of speed, things got pretty sketchy. In the Unstudded Open Quad class it was anyone’s race for the first lap or so until they started sorting themselves out. Add in the fact that there was a dozen racers with no studs in this class, and it equaled a lot of action. In the end it was Dean Trahan on his Suzuki that took the win followed by Scott Cornelius on his Yamaha and then Taylor Peterson. In the Pro Open Quad class it was Daryl Rath that had the starts dialed in on his Polaris. As much as those fast starts help, he couldn’t keep Taylor Peterson on his Honda behind him for long. After Peterson passed Rath and went on for the win, third place went 8

to Nick Allen on his Yamaha. Allen had a good day as his good riding helped him win the Vet Open Quad race. It ended up to be a very good day for racing. The weather was great, the racers raced hard and safe, and the spectators were treated to plenty of action. Whether a racer or a spectator, it was well worth being on the ice for this event. Moose 3 hour helps take the chill out of Wisconsin Winter Neillsville, Wisconsin January 15 By Dave Hollub

S

till a hidden jewel in the world of Wisconsin ice racing, the Moose 3 Hour once again proved to be a great time. The weather was ideal with a temperature in the upper teens as the riders meeting was called. John Strangfeld laid out the course and was happy to see when he plowed it out that it clocked in at exactly four miles, which was his goal to keep the racing exciting, without getting too crowded. Soon the thirty bikes were lined up and waiting for the flag to drop on each class. First out of the start was the Amateur Team riders with Madison Motorsports Eric Hollub from team Spider Shite.

into high speed straights and then long sweeping corners that tested every rider’s skills at adapting to the ever changing conditions.

The new Canadian screw class kept it interesting as they added to the challenges by establishing some nice ruts in the corners that got deeper as the race went on. Rob Newport and Sean Mowery teamed on the Cycle City bike in the Canadian screw class and took the lead for the overall win as the checkers dropped three hours later. Mowery told me after the race, “the course was good, a little tight but it was fun. The Canadian screws were a huge advantage with all the fluff.” Newport added, “it was a good course and as Sean said a little tight. We had a great time.” Lance Wollin was teamed up with Terry Hahn as Team Sunset, and together they raced into second place in the Expert Team class. Wollin later said “Great deal today. ing. The track was tight this year, quite a bit different than last year. Long straights and tight turns, overall it was a good layout and a lot of fun. The weather was good, nice and cold, the way winter should be in Wisconsin. The ice was nice and hard, and tomorrow we’ll go out and race again. The bike stayed together, we didn’t put it down, and we kept it in one piece. I want to thank Rock River Powersports, Sunset Tavern, and Moose Racing.” Pete Laubmeier once again created some of the best trophies seen in Wisconsin racing and every team that claimed one proudly hoisted them for all to see and envy. As much fun as everyone has racing the Moose, I am convinced the quest to claim one of Laubmeier’s creations is a big factor which brings everyone back year after year. While it is nice to see the race as a hidden gem it

R

eads Racing Unl. is gearing up for another exciting season of racing in 2011, but before anyone hits it was time to honor the Champions of the 2010 season. The annual awards banquet was held on January 29th, and once again Reads Racing managed to keep this banquet entirely free of charge to all riders and families! Everyone was welcome, and nearly 300 people were in attendance. A table was set up for riders and families entering the hall so they could enter their name in a free drawing for prizes. Over 250 prizes were to be handed out! Reads Racing drew names until every prize on the table was gone, and nearly everyone walked away with something! A special THANK YOU to Maximum Powersports - Peru, Lake City Racing, MX Decalz, Woodson Motorsports, Smith Tire, Viking Foods, Day Hardware, Webbs Family Pharmacy, Loose Moose Motorsports, Orr Motorsports, R&D Motorsports, Checkered Flag Productions, Endurocross, South Side Video, Lafayette Limo Racing, Spykes KTM, Caterpillar Machinery, and New Holland of Rochester. The tables were covered with stickers, posters and spark plug pencils for guests to

Finally the last special recognition award for the season went to Dakota Robins. Dakota received the Dare to Dream Award. Dakota has been racing at Reads tracks since he was on a 50cc mini.

"We all look at Dakota and think, that kid is going somewhere," said Mikey Klinger. Dakota was sponsored by Spykes KTM in 2010. For the first time ever Reads Racing split the summer into two different series. The All Star Series and The Premier Series. The class champion was based on the combined total of the Premier Series and The All Star Series. The champion in each class was awarded a #1 Plate. It is also a tradition for the top raw points riders to receive large metal cups. The 2010 Raw Points Champion was Jacob Clingaman with a total of 1423 points earned in the Mini Quad class. Coming in a close second was Dalton Packard with 1,401 points earned in the 125 2-Stroke class. Anthony Mann made finished third with 1196 points. In a close fourth was Evan Faucett with 1153, ahead of Preston Barngrover with 1,035. The winners of each series received a custom designed plaque with their name and class engraved. If riders were a member they received a hooded sweatshirt in addition.

In the Premier Series the closest points battle was between Haley Davis and Kris Marburger in the Youth Quad class. Haley and Kris went back and forth over the season, and Haley pulled out the win by only five

points! In Quad B, Michael Schooley and Sonny Nemitz had a friendly rivalry throughout the season as well. Micheal took the win with only a thirty-one points difference. Michael had to work, and arrived to the banquet just as the crew were cleaning up. Michael received a loud round of applause from the remaining riders and the entire Reads Racing crew as he claimed his prize! Before

the day was said and done over 300 awards were handed out! The banquet was a great day for riders to relax and enjoy the rewards from all their efforts of a long season of racing. Visiting old friends and meeting new ones, enjoying a meal and prizes is a great way to spend the day, and a great way to kick-off another season of racing. A special thank you to Clingaman Racing, Graddy Construction, and Stichter Racing. The first event will be held at D&D Motorsports on March 12 & 13. Slark finished first in the moto, and was fourth overall for the day. Devisscher was in second place in the first lap, but was shoved back to fifth place by the fourth lap. Cunningham got a much better start compared to his first moto, third at the first corner, quickly passing Devisscher in the

nce again for the winter season, Motokazie was promoting the indoor motocross events at the Red Horse Ranch Arena, in Fergus Falls, MN. The facility may be a horse arena; yet it allows Motokazie to create a state of the art indoor motocross experience. The arena space is 150’x520’ and the total building is 144,000 square feet. An indoor personal pit area provides riders privacy and comfort, along with the ability to store their machines inside for the entire weekend. The dirt in the arena is some of the best moist, loamy dirt to be found, allowing Motokazie to create a fun, amateur friendly track free of rocks and low on dust. On the weekend of December 11th, the weather was cold; but calm in the Fergus Falls area. Riders from all over the upper Midwest as well as several from Canada showed up to spend some time on their bikes and quads, either participating in the afternoon’s open practice or the evening’s motocross race. A good turnout provided lots of exciting racing action in the 37 race classes. Just like the professional arenacross or supercross races, how the rider finishes is usually heavily determined by how they started. In these tight and technical tracks the quickest rider to the first turn is usually going to have an easier race. This was very evident in the 250B class. In moto one Kole Devisscher of Winnipeg, Manitoba, took the holeshot followed by Zach Wallace of Humboldt, IA, and Troy Severson of Clearbrook, MN. Wallace began pressuring Devisscher immediately; and on lap two pushed Devisscher high in a berm to take the lead. Cody Slark of Chaska, MN, who typically places in the top tree at Motokazie races, had a poor start and could only make it up to seventh place by the checkers. The same went for Cole Felland of Elbow Lake, MN, who was in eighth in the first lap. By lap two Felland had passed Matt Chandler of Nielsville, MN, and in lap three, Felland blocked out both Hayden McKinny and Jessica Hadler. Top five at the checkers was: Wallace, Devisscher, Severson, Conner Cunningham of HastThe 250C class had seventeen riders.

second lap, and chasing Slark to finish. Wallace put in a solid performance all day with decent starts out of the gate and holding his position in both races, not letting anyone get by him. With the 1-3 finishes, Wallace went home with first place overall for the day. Overall behind Wallace was Cunningham, Devisscher, Felland, Severson, McKinny, Chandler and Hadler. The event was filled with good close racing, much like in the 250B class. This was

CWIRA opens in Fremont

Fremont, Wisconsin - January 9

I

t was sunny, no wind, and just the right weather for an ice race... all very welcoming to the CWIRA season opening points event in Fremont, WI. Partridge Lake was ready for the second day of racing, as Saturday saw a non-points warm-up day help everyone get that final tuning and practice in. The ice was perfect, and held up really well as the nearly 200 entries ran through their twenty-seven different classes on the oval and GP layout. It was great to be back racing on the ice! Riders ran through the GP course first, and after John Strangfeld showed everyone the fast way around in the ProAm class, it was

Corey Schroeder’s turn with the Amateur class. Schroeder fought his way into the lead as they entered the first tight corner and never looked back. Michigan’s Michael O’Boyle ran in second with GasGas rider Amanda Nadboralski close on his heals. Schroeder pulled away a little as they held the order to the finish with Mike Trulen fourth. Trulen led the riders out in the second moto, but by the end of the first lap Schroeder had made his move and went on to take another win. Trulen stayed in second until the last lap when O’Boyle made his way past. Dj Schultz took the big win in the Open GP Quad class ahead of a fast field including Dustin Hoffman and nine others. the Open Pro riders in the first moto of their oval racing. He left all the action behind as Brian Frandsen was second through the first lap, but then passed by Russell Bradley. Not to be outdone, coming from fourth and passing both Frandsen and Bradley was Pat Bean in the second lap. Bean was on fire, and then held pace with Strangfeld to the end. As they entered the fourth lap, Frandsen had found his rhythm and dove back under Bradley to retake third where they finished ahead of Soren LaValley in fifth. In the second moto Strangfeld led Bean all the way. Mark Muth, after having a rough first moto came back with some late passes to finish third ahead of Frandsen. The Open Pro Studded Quads ran 1-2-3 to the finish in the first moto with Dj Schultz taking the win. In second, Dustin Hoffman had everything he could handle to hold of a possessed Graham Eichmiller, that just kept pushing him every inch of the way. The second moto saw a repeat as the top three started and finished the same, this time ahead of Mike Mueller. The Open C bike class was exciting. Zach Zwirchitz and Brock Schroeder were took turns holding the lead all moto. The two different styles were very evident as Zwirchitz was coming out of the corners much harder while Schroeder was making his time by diving in a lot more aggressively. As the season rolls on, if one of these guys masters both sides of the cornering technique, they’ll be tough to beat. As CYCLE USA, March 2011

A determined Patrick was pushing the outside line hard every lap trying to find a way around, and with two corners left he made the pass stick for the class sweep. Always cool, the Outlaw Pro Rubber ATV class, and today was more of the same. Jeremy

Flees of Plover, WI didn’t win either of the motos, but it wasn’t for lack of effort or using creative line choices. In the first moto Cody Norris led early until Scott Geldernick worked up and passed him for the lead in the third lap. Flees was coming from mid-pack, and running a line on the outside that had to be twenty feet further out than anyone else.

It was an all or nothing proposition, that was working. By the fourth lap he had went around Norris, and actually closed on Geldernick. A couple more laps and he may have pulled it off, but second was as far as he’d get this time. Tyler Griepentrog finished fourth ahead of Dan Lindner who had a terrible start, and also came from the back of the pack. Lindner’s good ride in the first moto set the stage in moto two as he got off the line a lot better, running in second behind Geldernick. By the second lap Lindner was on his way to the win. Geldernick rode smart in second as it was all he needed for the overall (1-2). he Bostrom brothers Erick and Jacob each enjoyed a successful afternoon of motorcycle ice racing as the Stud Club hosted round two of the Minnesota State Ice Racing Championship Series held on Pokegama Lake located in Pine City, MN. Erick Bostrom, the elder of the two scored the win in the Vet 30 Plus class via a wire to wire win just ahead of Larsons Cycle’s Jason Larson, Mark Deal and Brian Nelson. Younger brother Jacob Bostrom’s two event wins didn’t come quite as easily however, as he had to perform a dicey midrace pass on early race leader Jesse Edwards to secure the win in the Dash for Cash that was held prior to the afternoon’s main events. #98 Jorden Klejeski won the 100-125cc Later, during the Open Pro main combo class just ahead of #24 Shayanna Wilson.

Wise from Andover, MN. Wise bolted into the lead at the start and quickly put an astonishingly amount of distance on a notoriously fast group ice racers. Unfortunately, Wise began to encounter a rear brake problem and on lap three he overran a corner and fell, allowing the class to rumble by. Jacob Bostrom eventually went on to score win number two on the day with Edwards and Erick Bostrom in tow. Wise recovered quick enough to re-pass Jared Torgerson to finish fourth by race’s end. “My rear brake started hanging up. After I crashed I looked back and didn’t see anybody, I didn’t think I was that far ahead,” explained Wise afterward. “I kept the clutch in to keep the bike running and got one of those dudes back anyway.” Jacob Bostrom who has been a consistent front runner in the ice racing fraternity for a quite a few years com-

petes in the A class during the summer months in motocross also. He appeared happy with the win after having a less than stellar finish at the previous Stud Club’s ice race. “Last time I finished second in the Open Pro class, but it seemed I spent the rest of the day lying on the ice!” he explained. The steely ice race veteran also held high praise for Wise, “He’s a young upcoming kid and he was going well. He just needs a little more experience so he doesn’t do that (crash) while he’s checking out. I was going to ride my CR 500 today but Jason Larson offered me his 450. It has great tires a little more grunt.” The ATV contingent on hand was a large one indeed. Cameron Johnson scored a pair of victories in the Open A and Open Pro classes. Second generation racer Anthony

The Women’s class saw #113 Melinda Bullford score the win ahead of #24 Danielle Flansha.

CYCLE USA, March 2011

Playing in the Sandbox New Richmond, Wisconsin - January 22

R

iders in the upper midwest have a couple choices come winter. Put the bike away, stud it up for the ice, or as more and more are doing, ride indoors. It helps to have a great facility to go to, and the Amsoil Sandbox Arena fits the bill just perfectly. Plenty of practice opportunities all week and then a couple times during the winter you can line up and test those practiced skills against other racers. The races have seen an adjustment this year, sort of a spilt program where youth based classes run in the morning, and the amateur classes follow, running in the afternoon. It works, as it makes for an easier day for families and riders. Today, January 22nd was race day, and we were able to take in some of the good racing. Best news to many, is while the track still has that busy indoor feeling to it, the overall layout has been tamed down a bit over the last two years. Plenty of fun, and if we dare say it, a safer experience. In the Schoolboy class, Marshfield, WI’s Jeff Stewart had the best timing off the gate taking the holeshot ahead of Ridgeland, WI’s Jack Slagel and Minnesota rider Nick Schnagl. For three laps Slagel moved from one side of the track to the other trying to find an advantage. Each time they came down the long back whoops section, he came close, and finally his third effort was effective. After making the pass he pulled a couple bikes lengths to take the win. Austin Anderson used the final lap to pass Daniel Fliehe for fourth. Slagel followed Stewart again in the second moto for the first three laps. Then he pulled a nice move to take over the lead for his second win. Schnagl once again finished third. Slagel after getting the win, “I just worked him through the whoop section, then cut in before the double to pass in the next turn. I held it on after that and didn’t see him again. It was a good race. The track is good, I ride here once or twice a week. I’m only about fourty-five minutes away, so it is great having it here. I’d like to thank my dad, and Clayton Feine for his help with the Pro-Action Suspension.” Forest Lake, MN’s Young Jake Paige showed he was all business on his KTM in the 50cc Injected 4-8 class. After taking the first moto holeshot, he quickly distanced himself from the pack, but never eased off on the throttle until taking the big win. Mccrae Hagarty was in second, getting pushed by Easton Block and Kaiden Knaack. Hagarty rode a flawless race until late when Block simply found an opening and passed for second. CYCLE USA, March 2011

Moto two was more of the same for Paige leading all the way. Block finished second again, but this time Jackson Oehlhof got the best of Hagarty and Knaack for third. The 65cc 7-9 class had Josh Boaz shine right from the gate drop in moto one. He led the way, and never faltered. Aaron Boatman ran in second until just before the end of the last lap when Tayler Grall bumped him back to third. Dj Gritzmacher finished fourth ahead of Mason Grecula in the eight rider class. The second moto had Boaz and Grall 12 by the end of the first lap. This time Gritzmacher finished third after a good race with Boatman and Jaxon Opitz. A quiet Josh Boaz seemed pretty happy with his two class wins on the day, “I got good starts and then I tried to not fall over. I get to come here every couple weeks and really like it. My favorite part is doing the jumps, those are the best.” Auston Anderson pulled the holeshot in the opening SuperMini moto, but seconds later Nick Schnagl had already slid past. Anderson didn’t just let him go, and had a few good lines in the infield to pull next to the KTM rider. After the first two laps, Schnagl turned it up and finally pulled a small gap to take the win. Max Walburg and Bret Holland finished 3-4. The second moto had a repeat as Schnagl was just unstoppable out front. The 50cc Open 4-8 class had twelve riders come off the gate with Pewaukee, WI’s Dj Gritzmacher out front on his Cobra. As he checked out on the class, Nick Paige ran solid in second. Coming from fifth, Josh Kisch worked up to finish third after getting by both Weston Milas and Conner Klemenhagen. Gritzmacher and Paige were back in the top two spots right away in the second moto. Improving on his first outing, These guys were having a good time.

250A rider #17 Cody Rodenborn and B class winner Conner Cunningham off the line.

Zach Lindley in his Mini Quad class.

Klemenhagen worked into third and ran there to the end for third overall. Kisch slipped back to fifth this moto behind Milas. Gritzmacher also won the 50cc Premix 7-8 class, taking back to back moto wins. In the first moto Nick Paige finished second after Jaxon Opitz DNF’ed with a mechanical problem. Jeffrey Lilienthal was third in the first moto. Opitz wanted to make an impression in the second moto, and did so by finishing second, just ahead of Conner Klemenhagen and Paige. Gritzmacher, “The track is really cool, and it is just fun to be out there. I’m glad my dad helps me so much so I can do it. It would be hard for me to pick one thing I liked the most, it is all just great.” According to his father, they make the trip up to the arena every month in the winter for a couple days of practice and then a race. He thinks it’s good for Dj to stay riding, and likes bringing him. Rogers, MN’s Pierce Knight had a big day taking wins in three classes. He won both motos in the 65cc 10-11 class, then on his Yamaha YZ85, won the 85cc 9-11 class as well as 9-12. Josh Boaz went 1-2 for second overall in 9-11, while Kole Lemcke was second in both motos of 9-12. The 250C class got the afternoon program started, and it didn’t take long for the fireworks to ignite. Hunter Ersbo quickly got into the lead while Jeff Stewart, Jack Slagel, and Logan Cipala led the first half of the pack. Slagel went right after Stewart pushing him in an effort to get by. At the end of the whoops he made a block pass stick and took over second. Stewart came right back a couCYCLE USA, March 2011

ple corners later and stuffed the Kawasaki rider hard enough to send him to the ground. Stewart rode the rest of the race in second while Cipala and Mariusz Grochowski filled in third and fourth. Ersbo was leading the second moto with Slagel trying to make a move before he fell, and dropped back. Ersbo then had Stewart just a tick back until late in the moto when he lost time and dropped back to third. Stewart took the win and overall while Ersbo went 1-3 for second overall ahead of Cipala’s 3-2 motos. River Falls, WI’s Mike Little grabbed the early lead in the first moto of the +25A class, only to have Jack Slagel pass him at the beginning of the second lap. Little kept his cool, stayed close and a lap later re-took the lead before going on to win as Dan Riley finished third ahead of Jared Anderson. Little was consistent, winning the second moto for a clean run to the overall. Behind him, it was all different. Jared Anderson (42) had a much better moto and finished second overall ahead of Dan Riley (3-3). Getting the short end of the deal for fourth overall was Cunningham who settled for fourth in the second moto. The Open A class ran with Open B, and off the start B rider Conner Cunningham followed A rider Cody Rodenborn. Cunningham made a pass to take the overall lead as a couple of the A riders started to move up. Nathan Laporte quickly caught, and then passed Cunningham to lead both the A riders and the overall group. From there, he checked out as Iowa’s Brennan Myers cut his way through the B riders and into second overall. Cody Rodenborn finished third with the A class. Following Cunningham in B, Mitchell

Spring Creek banquet night Red Wing, Minnesota - October 30 By Rolfe Otterness

Josh Boaz, mighty conqueror of the 50cc Pre Mix class.

T

he 2010 Spring Creek Super Series banquet and awards ceremony took place at Treasure Island Resort & Casino. Most of the lucky riders that hit the track for the series made it here to the social event of the season in which the Mazeppa Area Jaycees subsidized everybody's meal ticket. Emcee Guy Ohland and associate emcee Mike Quinn, Sr. ran the show. With over 300 racers eligible for awards they gave their vocal cords a good workout. A special presentation was delivered by research assistant Amy Zimmerman, who spoke about the effects of concussions on motocross riders, which is currently the focus of a study to be completed by Mayo Clinic personnel in cooperation with the racers at Spring Creek Park.

Kaleb Carman and Dalton Hein with their new KTMs.

The main reason for the night is, of course, the awarding of Series championships to those who earned them over the long summer season. Riders who managed to make it to the top of their respective classes took home the coveted 4MX Graphics championship plates and an assortment of swag provided by series sponsors including the famous Bob’s Cycle Supply jackets. Most notable of the moto heroes were those with multiple class championships – Brandon Moore (65cc 7-11 & 65cc 7-9), Trey Moore (65cc 10-11 & 85cc 9-11), Henry Miller (85cc 12-15 & Supermini), Brady Rhode (Schoolboy & 125 Two Stroke), Alexander Linders (14-24C & Open C) and Scott Steinle (40A & 45A). Congratulations go to these fine characters and all who participated in the 2010 Spring Creek Super Series. Come on back and try it again in 2011! Three lucky riders went home with new bikes, which eligible riders were all in contention for in the annual drawing. Rock River 34

Powersports and Spring Creek MX provided a YZ250F which landed in Matt Dohrn’s possession. Delano Sports Center and KTM rounded up a pair of mini bikes and the first went to Dalton Hein. Kaleb Carman scooped up the other one to make his night super special. Riders who placed in second or third snapped up customized hoodies to keep them

warm until spring. Other great quantities of goodies and help throughout the summer came from the various series sponsors. Thanks to all who made this another spectacular season – Thor, Bob's Cycle Supply, KTM, Delano Sports Center, Rock River Powersports, Team VRM, Parts Unlimited, Dale Preble & the Mazeppa Area Jaycees, 4MX Graphics, PowerMadd, Motorex Oil, Rockstar Energy Drink, Dunlop Tires, Sandbox Arena, MN Racing, the Kahler Grand Hotel, Wiseco, Scott USA, and mxbuttpatches. D22 Annual MX Banquet

The Youth classes all received huge trophies. Tama, Iowa - January 29 By Mark D. Bonnell Photos by Missi Thede

I

owa’s District 22 Motocross Group hosted the 2010 Motocross Championship banquet at the fabulous Meskwaki Casino in Tama, Iowa on the last Saturday evening in January with well over 300 racers and their families from all over the state in attendance. The event was well organized and planned by the group and its members. Each promoting club shared in the duties from planning to execution over the months from the end of the 2010 racing season to the end of the formal program. This cooperation lessens the work-load from the traditional format of having a club or promoter host the event, and take on the daunting task of putting on such a high-caliber event all alone. The racers who received awards were also treated to multiple door-prizes throughout the evening. The door prizes ranged in value and included several helmets, sets of tires and other valuable tools and supplies that every racer uses during the season. The awards are purchased by the promoting clubs and promoters as well as received as donations from area dealers and related businesses. To be involved as one of next year’s door prize sponsors, simply talk to a club or promoter during the season. The evening got underway with Emcee Mark Droust opening the ceremony with a

brief overview of the organizational structure of AMA District 22 Club Council, and a quick recap of the 2010 season. Next in order was the serving of the elegant and delicious meal by the casino’s banquet staff. At the completion of the meal, Mr. Droust returned to the podium to go over the changes for the upcoming 2011 motocross season. The next portion of the program was the process of awarding all of the youth class champions for the 2010 season. Many of the trophies towered over the recipients, which always makes for an excellent photo opportunity for families and sponsors alike. The award winners were also handed a microphone and given the chance to thank their sponsors and families for their support. This always makes for excellent entertainment as kids say the funniest things when given the chance. Between the youth and amateur class presentations, the Palmer family took to the stage to award the recipient of the third annual Bob Palmer Vet Sportsmanship Award. The presentation of the award has quickly become a highlight of the evening. This year’s winner was Lamoni Iowa’s Jim Johnson. Jim has been involved in motocross since its inception, and is one of the true pillars of the sport. From his childhood involvement in Southern California’s birth of motocross to his current involvement, racing and supporting the district’s motocross effort in many capacities, Jim lives and truly loves the sport. Congrat-

ulations to Jim for his well deserved recognition. The Palmer family also used the funds raised through the sale of the Bob Palmer Memorial t-shirts to supply several up and coming young riders with some well deserved and needed support for the 2011 season. The recipients were brought to the stage to receive their sponsorship packages. Every single recipient was not only surprised, but also very thankful. The final portion of the evening was the awarding of the amateur class champions. While the amateur champions didn’t receive huge trophies like the youth champions, they did receive more personalized plaques with their picture on them with each champion receiving the prestigious aluminum class champion number plates from Hickman Racing. District 22 Motocross Group’s awards are always amongst the nicest in the industry, and this year’s awards were no exception. The evening was capped off with a touching closing thought from Emcee Mark Droust. The large crowd was then free to bench race with their friends and competitors and to enjoy the Meskwaki facility. 2010 D22 Award Winners: 50Jr: 1.Gage Steburg, 550 2.Braxtan Steburg, 494 3.Zachary Anderson, 434 4.Eli Hoversten, 414 5.Zane Brownsberger, 380 6.Kaiden Knaack, 314 50Sr: 1.Jacob Dakovich, 509 2.Ruger Brown, 508 3.Tristan Bell, 471 4.Colby Roskop, 408 5.Zack Frederick, 388 6.Paxton Jobe, 314 65Jr: 1.Hunter Utsler, 450 2.Drew Lubka, 397 3.Zack Frederick, 331 4.Jacob Dakovich, 235 CYCLE USA, March 2011

Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin - January 16

U

sually the first events on an ice racing season face the question of if the ice is ready for racing, but luckily that wasn’t an issue this year. With little snow cover, and some cold old fashioned Wisconsin cold weather, the 2011 Southern Wisconsin Ice Racing Association season kicked off with near perfect ice conditions on January 2nd, just as planned. The series didn’t miss a beat getting in all the early events on Lake Koshkonong in Fort Atkinson, WI. We caught up with the series on January 16th, week three as they continued to run in front of the popular Sunset Bar and Grill. There was a full schedule of oval and gp course classes as always, with quads making up the lion’s share of the schedule. The promoting club is doing everything they can to welcome the motorcycle and mini riders, but for whatever reason, they just haven’t started to show up yet. These riders are missing out on a well run program with easy accessability in the south-central part of the state. The bike riders that are coming, are having a good time. Robbie Treinen is continuing to dominate the motorcycle racing in both the Oval and GP formats. In the 85cc bike class, Caleb Larson took the win ahead of Seth Doeberlein and Jared Hahn.

He lost just a little speed coming out of turn two and Geist was back into second to the finish behind Schultz. Chad Larsen missed all the fun in the Quad B studded class. It wasn’t a bad thing, as he led every inch of the race right from the start. Behind, Ryan Truong finished second after trading spots with Brad Gordee and Brandon Clemens all the way to the white flag lap. The Pro Quad unstudded class continued the good show as the top four were still trading spots as the white flag came out. David Schultz had slid back to fourth at one time, but then worked past hard charging Rick Gilbert when we went too wide, and then back past Tyler Severson for second. Cody Buckeridge held a small gap on the others after the second lap to get the win. Brady Schultz led off the start in the 450 Pro Studded class as Hans Schmidt ran in sec-

ond. In third, Andrew Duatermann was forced to try alternative lines as he really worked to try and get past Schmidt. He got side by side a couple times, but Schmidt rode a perfect line and never faltered. The SWIRA events always pull a good turnout of talented female racers, and after

they do their best to beat up on the guys in some of the other classes, they tend to all come together in the Unstudded Women’s class. Sporting the #1X on the front of her quad, Brittany Calvert led them out and through the first lap. Jamie Schmidt was in third behind Sarah Dilley as Tiffany Geist and Kayla Hanson were looking to lock down fourth. Into the second lap, Schmidt swung wide and around Dilley, then a lap later in the same corner, cut under Calvert for the lead. Schmidt pulled a small lead, as the others were all in contention right up to the end with Calvert finishing runner-up. The Quad B Unstudded riders proved how fast things can change in their class as Tiffany Geist led the first three laps. Coming hard behind her, David Schultz, Jaime Schmidt, and Jeremy Schultz had just fought their way past Ryan Garfoot when he made a mistake. Then in a blink, Geist lost traction in one corner and slid back to fourth and finally the order was set to the end with David Schultz taking the win. The TT course racing is always fun and a good mix for everyone. The unstudded riders really need to be on their best game here,

Hunter Schultz had three wins on the day.

as the transitions from left to right turns seem to put the quad riders at the greatest risk of making big mistakes. Off the line in the Limited Tire class, Matt Dupee held the advantage, but never backing down, Jeremy Schultz held it on around the outside and had the right position into the next tight right hander. As a lot of riders got off track in the big chicane, Schultz was opening a lead as he finished the first lap. Dupee was second, Justin Dilley third. By the third lap the leaders were starting to pull away on the clean track but Schultz made a mistake just before the white flag and Dupee was back in the lead. Schultz after the race, “It was a good track the first couple laps, but then it started coming apart with all the riders out there. It was still good racing and a blast as usual. Late in the race I just couldn’t hold it in the groove, and lost enough that he (Dupee) got by for the win.” Race winner Dupee after the close finish, “I got a good start in second place and he just wasn’t making any mistakes. I tried pushing him at the end, and not sure if it helped, but he made a mistake and I got by. I had just enough to hold him off there at the finish. This is my second weekend running the tires that I got, and it is my second win in a row so I am really happy with everything. I’m here with the Englehart trailer (the series title

and I’m here at the track so it works great for everyone.” Jacob Foti backed up his earlier win with another in the Open A Studded TT. “It went good out there. I didn’t think I would get the start, but did and then just rode the race the best I could. I also won the oval class, but that was another close one.
