From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman It’s already July and this summer seems to be going way too fast. We’ve held events in all of our disciplines despite the wet spring and start to summer. We have many more to go so lets hope our monsoon season has ended. At our last board meeting the main order of business was getting 3000 bags ready, one for each member. Each bag contains a 50th Anniversary sticker, 50th Anniversary pin, medical ID badge for your helmet and a pair of ARMCA soft tie downs. Each promoter/ club is to have some of these bags at their events, you can claim yours by turning in the black redemption card that was included with your membership card. If you’ve lost your black card you can still obtain your Anniversary bag by paying the $5 lost card fee. Your name and unique ID number will be recorded and sent to the district office so we know you got your goodies. In other business we have handed out almost all of the Fly bucks. It was nice to get so many requests for them this year. We handed out the majority of them to the members that applied for them. Fly has been our major sponsor now for the past several years, donating $10,000 in Fly Bucks for the use of our members. I have been running their gear for many years and am really satisfied with the comfortable fit and long wear. We hope to continue our relationship with them well into the future. We are still looking at special anniversary awards, so if you have any ideas or know of anyone that would be interested in supplying them please get them to contact me, Leslie Vanderwerf or the district office. We approved one rider classification appeal in Flat Track as that discipline is not tracked by the AMA yet. We still have a pair of National Pro events coming up, with the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross in July and the AMA Pro Hillclimb in August. These will be great spectator events and will also have D23 points paying amateur racing as part of the weekend. This will mark a new venue for

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... the Hillclimbers, Spring Creek hasn’t seen a hillclimb event in over 35 years. It will be interesting to watch them tackle Mt. Martin. Off-Road events have been going well with all of the scheduled events being run without any rainouts. This is amazing considering the sheer number of rain filled weekends we’ve had. Nate Ferderer has had a successful season so far on the National circuit, lets hope that continues. We will be watching our riders that are headed to the National Amateur Championships at Loretta Lynn’s in early August. We wish them luck. Our membership numbers are up a little bit compared to this time last year, we’re hoping that trend continues... That’s about all I have for this month, I will see you on the tracks, trails and roads of Minnesota. Mike

Nuke Series Finally Kicks Off at Byron's Motosports Park Byron, Illinois - June 3 By Mariska Minkus

T

he sun was bright with blue skies and billowy white clouds, the temperatures held in the low 70's, perfect racing weather. There was great excitement and enthusiasm from riders and fans, finally the Barone Spinal Care Nuclear Series was able to kick off its 2018 Series, starting with round three. The previous two rounds were cancelled due to Mother Nature's late spring snow and excessively wet weather conditions. Track owner, Aaron Vincer, was able to get the newly designed Legacy track layout in great racing condition. You may remember last year the track was running in reverse and the riders had fun with it! I mean, "who hasn't ever thought about riding a track backwards." But with the additions of a new table top coming out of the woods section and redesigning the back side uphill triple and other sections, the track is back to running in its original

+40B/C Moto two start, #96 Cory Daugherty went on to win the overall ahead of #31 John Hauerwas.

direction. The comments I was hearing from the riders, was that the track has a good flow and it's challenging! As the practice rounds were completing the ruts began to develop making the conditions near perfect for racing. Action got underway with the A riders being the first class out on the track, with Parker Smith and RJ Mackenzie battling for the lead right off the start. Mackenzie pulled out with the win with Smith right behind in second. After the second moto, Smith would end up winning the overall for the day with Mackenzie second and Michael Kingstad with a solid (3-3). In the 250B class the gate dropped with Conner Burger taking the holeshot. In the first moto Deven Fell (WI) on his Yamaha, had a bad start and ended up in the middle of the pack, he pushed hard to work his way up and finished second. In the second moto, again it was Burger taking the hole shot and holding the lead as Fell found himself once again fighting for

that second position with Joseph Voegtle. In the end it was Voegtle taking second place, his 5-2 for the day grabbed third overall as Fell finished 2-3 capturing second for the day. "I didn't get the starts I wanted so I had to make my way to the top. Moto one I had some great passes to come up to second place," stated the Flow Vision Goggle/ Answer/ EVS sponsored, Fell. Woodstock KTM sponsored Burger after the win, "Well, all my motos went pretty good. Pulled both holeshots and just tried to ride smooth laps and stay out front." The Highlight of the day was watching the Sportland2/ O'Reilly auto parts sponsored Nick Inman racing in the 14-24 class, running an amazing 1.58 lap time. Currently the fastest lap time on the new track layout, even after the previous week with the Regional Qualifiers. Inman pulled the holeshot in both motos and was quickly leading with a huge gap.

Running in second was Eddie Norred on his Yamaha in both motos. The real battle was for third. In the first moto it was Deven Fell coming in third, but in the moto two the battle ensued again, this time it was Joseph Voegtle taking over. Voegtle left with third overall (4-3) ahead of Fell (3-4). Inman, "the motos went really well and I just put my head down to put laps together. The track was really good, it got pretty rough and rutted." Motosports Park has always done a great job with making sure every rider is awarded for their accomplishments on the track, and who wouldn't love bringing home that coveted five-foot first place trophy. This round had an added bonus from Answer Racing upping the ante even further with contingency cash to two deserving classes. These classes are a good representation of the future of our sport, with 250C and 65Sr being chosen. First place riders won a complete set of Answer Racing gear, second place $50 in Answer cash and third received $25. In 250C it was Steven Minkus on his

KTM taking the holeshot in both motos. With Wisconsin’s Elijah Tetzlaff going down on the start in the first moto, he began charging through the pack and then passed Minkus for the win. Minkus finished second and James Waldron third. The second moto start was a nail biter with Minkus and Tetzlaff side by side, touching elbows trying to get the lead. It was Minkus front by the announcer’s tower, then guarding his position with Tetzlaff trying to get a pass on him. Halfway through the first lap Minkus went to the outside of the turn and Tetzlaff grabbed the inside and made the pass. With the top three riders being consistent in both motos, it was Tetzlaff winning the Answer Racing contingency riding gear! The Rock River Powersports sponsored Tetzlaff said, "I was basically just charging and putting in my own laps. The track was the best yet, the lines developed and ruts were perfect." In the 65Sr class the contingency was up for grabs until the finish of the second moto with the top three mixing it up until the final checkered flag. It was Deegan Vanvreede riding his KTM to win the An-

Nicholas Inman with the fastest lap on the new track layout.

swer gear, finishing (1-2) and Peter Parenti on his OCR Husqvarna finishing (31) giving him second overall and winning the $50 contingency. Preston Zollers went 2-3 for third. At the end of a great day I spoke with track owner Aaron Vincer and he said, "We were very happy to finally get our race season started. This has been a tough year so far as the weather has been terrible all around the district. We had to cancel the first two rounds of the Barone Performance Nuclear Mx Championships. Today, Mother Nature finally gave us a break... sort of. We had a nice day to work with, but the wind was blowing so hard we had to measure it in knots! The track held up well and the racing was outstanding. This season’s championship is wide open with it now being a short series. We only have four rounds left, so don't miss one. Just like at Loretta's, consistency wins champions! I want to give a huge thank you to Barone Performance, Woodstock KTM, Answer Racing and Hammertime Sports for their support and understanding this season. We have more great racing to come!"

The Vincer family has had challenges getting this season underway but they sure have proved to be unshakeable and are continuing to make Byron’s Motosports Park the premier track it is known as. Huntersville Enduro Huntersville, Minnesota - June 3 By Normal Racer

T

he River Valley Enduro Riders continue to work their magic in the Huntersville State Forest. With mother nature jumping on board watering the course days in advance and giving riders a cool temperature come race day you couldn’t ask for better conditions. In memory of the late Mike Pohl, row 1A was left open while 1b, 1c and 1d were given to fellow riding partners of Mike’s. Mike was notorious for selecting row 1A so he could ride the course and then go back and take pictures of the riders that followed. It’s good to see the clubs keeping his memory alive as he was a great person to have involved in the sport.

Jayme French enjoying his KTM 150

Key time at 9:00 had the riders lined up and ready to rip through the pine trees and over the sandy whoops. There was no shortage of either as the sandy terrain created some rough conditions, winding you in and out of the pine trees, testing your physical condition. Ryan Seamans had his cardio in check as he took the double win in the 250C class and in the Overall C. Noah Patenode pulled off second leaving Cameron Christiansen with third. Travis Deweese earned the win in Vet C. Starting on the 37th row Deweese got to enjoy the harshness of the course as all the other riders in front of him dug the whoops a little deeper. Jared Kvale and Andy Soteros in Vet C as well were a couple of those riders but just didn’t dig them deep enough to keep Deweese from beating Super Sr Bob Maki is all smiles them to the finish. ers did plus another section of trail to test They say this is a man’s their skill and endurance. Cole Jack charging to the 250B class win at the Huntersville Enduro

With an off weekend for the National circuit Nick Swenson and Logan Kittock returned for some home state racing. Kittock had the early speed and with that speed comes the need for brakes. Unfortunately for him he wrapped his rear brake pedal around his foot peg in section four costing him some valuable time. Swenson having his own issues in section one rebounded and found his grove propelling him to the win. I foresee more battles between these two throughout their careers. Recent college graduate Tyler Pogreba managed to hold onto third. With his new degree in Land Surveying and Mapping Science one would think he would make a great trail boss, cutting new trail for us all to enjoy. Good job RVER for hosting the Huntersville Enduro. Thanks to the Outpost for allowing us to partake in their facility. Always great food and friendly staff. Friendly reminder to get out and put in your volunteer time so we can continue to produce some great racing.

Loberg Masters Millville MX Millville, Minnesota - May 27 By Rolfe Otternesss

ake Loberg ran wild at the latest Spring Creek Park motocross event. Fending off some tough competition, Loberg topped the 14-24A and Open A classes as he motored about the tough terrain in the high heat. With near-record temperature and humidity (heat index of 100 degrees) it was a challenging environment. Loberg pulled off double moto wins in the 14-24 class and topped Open with a 2-1 score. There was a huge crowd on hand as there were about 730 entries on Sunday, the first day of the Memorial Day weekend double header. The track was prepped nicely for the day with John Martin and crew keeping everything but the temps under control. Joe Perron jumped out front early in the first Open A class moto with Ben Adamson slotting into second. Loberg was clawing his way forward and got his sights on Adamson with a couple laps left, then put on a surge and zapped him on the final lap. Perron, with a solid ride, had enough of a lead to take the checkers over Loberg. Brennan Myers nabbed fourth with Nick Jackson a bit behind for fifth. Loberg charged into the lead quickly in moto two with Perron and Adamson in formation behind him. Loberg stretched out a bit of a gap and maintained it to the flag with Perron running strong but unable to challenge, basically matching lap times with the leader. Adamson was

close in speed too but had to settle for third behind the two more experienced riders. Jayden Clough launched into the early lead as the 85cc 12-15 riders took over the track for moto one. Clough has been flying the past couple of years in the Mini classes and looks for the win every time

he’s on the track, but Avery Long seems to be getting close to challenging him as master of the class. Clough led all the way with Long getting close on the last lap and when the two charged down the last downhill before the finish line there were a few lapped riders at the bottom so Clough had

Dertien maintained his edge to the checkered while Tiegs withstood heavy pressure from Ross to take second. Andy Bussen and Dan Frasson grabbed fourth and fifth. Dertien jumped into the lead in moto two and was under pressure from Ross as they came across the line to end lap one. Ross took over the lead as Dertien had a slight mishap on the next lap and dropped back to third. Ross ran well to take the win with a solid lead over Dertien who passed Frasson on lap three but couldn’t claw his way back up to Ross. Great Action at Road America Event offers great opportunity to see some of the world’s fastest motorcycle racing!

Elias, Herrin and Beaubier Superbike race 1.

Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin - June 3 By Gordon Lunde

M

otoAmerica road racing returned to the beautiful Road America, “National Park of Speed”, located in the rolling hills near Elkhart Lake, WI. RA is one of my favorite tracks on the circuit. A great location, nice hospitality, good food, lots of night life and yes… superb racing. It just

doesn’t get much better than this for motorcycle road racing in the U.S. The MotoAmerica Championship has been dominated by Toni Elias on his Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing GSXR1000. Through the first three rounds of the series, Elias has won five of the six races. He came here to the Dunlop Championship at Road America with a three race win streak. The Liqui Moly Jr. Cup is a new class

developed from the former KTM 390 Cup series. MotoAmerica wanted to start a series that would mirror the World Supersport 300 series as well as similar classes in the Italian and Spanish national series’. So the KTM only series is gone and the new Jr. Cup is a beginner class series for several different brands of cycles. Included are the KTM RC390 / RC390R, Kawasaki Ninja 300 / 400, Suzuki GSX-R250R, Honda CBR 500R and the Yamaha YZF-R3. MotoAmerica and the other series are trying hard to find the solution to equalizing performance between all these models to make and keep the series competitive for everyone. Not an easy task. Engine rpm, chassis weights and other criteria are changed every race weekend to keep the brands close. Alex Dumas has been the force to reckon with so far this season in the class, and he came here to keep the force going. All went well in race one as Dumas got out front early and kept himself there the entire race. In race two, Alex got a little carried away and crashed on the first lap ending his chance at a double win for the weekend. Ashton Yates, who finished second in Saturday’s race, took over the lead after a bad start and ran off to an eight second lead at the checkers. Another new class this season is Stock 1000, another entry level class, but for riders hoping to break into the Superbike

JD Beach, Supersport class race two winner. If you’ve never been to Road America to see the action, simply make plans to do so next season! It is that good.

ranks. The machines are very limited in what can be changed from stock. These are basically street bikes with number plates. The aim here is to attract new riders on less costly equipment. Shane Richardson on his Woolich Racing Kawasaki took his first series win. The third new class for 2018 is the Twins Cup. This class is for two cylinder machines that can be heavily modified. There are a lot of these bikes readily available from the club racing ranks. It is a tuners dream, as there are few restrictions on what can be built for the class. Jason Madama rode his Altus Motorsports Yamaha to victory. The 600 Supersport class always provides great racing and close finishes. This round proved just how close it can be. Suzuki rider Valentin Debise returned to the track after a scary looking crash at Daytona in March. He came determined to make up lost points from missing a couple of rounds of competition. Race 1 was a barn burner as Debise and Yamaha rider JD Beach swapped the lead many, many times during the race.

Debise proved he was back in the game by winning race one by the narrow margin of .337 seconds over Beach In race two the same riders out front early and edged away from the pack. But this time it was Beach who got the hard fought victory over Debise by the closer margin of .037 seconds. At the top level of competition is the Motul Superbike class. All out, the fastest bikes and riders on the race track in the MotoAmerica series. As witnessed by the weekend’s racing, it is also the hardest fought class. Race 1 proved just how hard these racers push themselves and each other to get that first place result. Cameron Beaubier aboard the Yamaha Factory racing YZF1000 traded positions with Herrin and Toni Elias every lap and often several times on a lap. The pace was furious and the riders began getting a little out of shape trying to stay in the lead group. As the race wound down the action got hotter and this lead group had several contacts with each other at speed. The final contact on the last lap occurred between

Beaubier and Toni Elias (Suzuki Factory racing). The pair got together in turn twelve resulting in Elias hitting the ground and unable to continue. Beaubier kept it on two wheels, shot by and made the run to the checkered flag. Josh Herrin tucked in behind Beaubier but could not get the draft to the flag, missing the win by .002 of a second. After a talking to by race control after Saturday’s race to keep the racing clean, the antagonists from that race began the war all over again on Sunday. The top guys pushed the pace again, changing positions constantly trying to get and edge, make a break anywhere they could. Beaubier, Herrin and Roger Hayden and Elias battled out front. The last lap saw Beaubier and Herrin get a little edge on Hayden and make the sprint to the finish. Herrin made a very slight mistake in the last corner allowing Beaubier to get by at the flag by .195 of a second. Think of it, those finishes make the total margin of two wins at .197 of a second. That race fans, is great racing! CYCLE USA, July 2018

ATV Pro Motocross National Annual Sunset Ridge event survives the heat to deliver another great show!

Illinois’ Zachary Kaczmarzyk (41) dives into the first corner hard in the ProAm class, where he went on to fourth overall.

T

he ATV Motocross Pro National Championship made its way through Sunset Ridge this past weekend for more ATV racing action. The series stays on the mid to east coast

for the ten rounds hitting up a majority of the National Motocross tracks as well as Loretta Lynn Ranch to end the year in August. The two day event mixes Pro racing with a full amateur schedule that offers 39 classes run over two days. This weekend was certainly interesting with

The look on Chad Wienen’s face after finishing second in the Pro class says a lot about the day’s very hot conditions.

riders coming in on Thursday with practice to be held on Friday. The two pro motos were run on Saturday, while the two moto format for the amateurs took place over a two day stretch. The weather was certainly interesting with the late spring heat wave in full effect. The heat index was well over one hundred along with a pop-up storm putting down a few inches of rain towards the end of the day on Saturday; it was hard to figure out what would happen. Riders following the series on the amateur side came from far and near for the event, with some local riders putting in great efforts this weekend. In 450A two Indiana riders topped the podium. Logan Stanfield came out for a win taking first in the second moto followed up by Brogan Guyer on the Honda grabbing second overall. Production A was another good ride for Guyer this time taking the overall along with winning both motos. There were several other locals out there with Brandon Cesaroni out of Illinois taking third overall along with Jeremy Raupp (IL) Also making a spot in the top ten. The C classes were fast as ever this weekend, with some packed gates and plenty of competition. In Open C Drew

The heat didn’t stop the crowds from coming out to see the exciting racing on the always fantastic Sunset Ridge track.

Scott out of Indiana put in a huge come Ridge being Wienen’s home track he was back starting the weekend with an eighth pushing hard to get the win in front of the place finish in the first moto, only to crowd. The entire first moto Wienen and come back strong on Sunday taking secHetrick were all over each other pulling ond giving him third overall for the away from pack a little while the crowd’s weekend. Wyatt Fink (IL) and Vincent cheers were as loud as the machines Engle (WI) both had a great charge as going across the finish into the rollers. well keeping themselves up in the top ten overall. 450C was exciting as well with everyone out there pushing in the heat both days. Gage Beebe out of Iowa was able to secure the overall. He had a good battle going with Cole Wuellenweber (NH) who took the win in the first moto. Beebe was able to bring it back for the win in moto two and take the overall after some hard racing. The Pro class did both of their motos on Saturday, starting off in the morning with practice and timed qualifying, to later in the day run moto one around two and moto two around four. In the first moto Galena, Illinois local Chad Wienen got out front quick and had a good lead with his rival of the season Joel Hetrick out of Pennsylvania moving in right behind him. The story of the day was the battle between Wienen and Hetrick, they have been going back and forth trading off the red plate all season. With Sunset Winona, MN’s Mason Merchlewitz attacking the track

With only a few laps left Hetrick got around Wienen to take the lead and ultimately the win for moto one. The second moto would be where the battle would really take place now for the overall. They took off towards the end of the day with the heat index getting up in the

triple digits at this point. Wienen took off early to get out front once again, it appeared as though Hetrick was following some good lines and setting up to make another move, but Wienen wasn’t going to make that easy as they really put down some fast laps with a blistering pace. This race Hetrick didn’t take as long to get around and you could see the Wienen may have emptied the tank in the first moto dropping back a bit as the laps went

on. Hetrick went on to take the win and regain the points lead. The podium for the day would be Hetrick on the top, Wienen in second and Thomas Brown out of Texas taking a solid third for the day. It was also nice to see Sam Rowe (WI) Zach Kaczmarzyk (IL) and Drake Koelling (IL) putting up some great rides and getting into the top ten. It was a great day out at Sunset Ridge as always with Mother Nature certainly

Wisconsin’s Jayden Londerville went 4-3 for third overall in 250 Mod.

It’s always a good time to see these larger events come through the local tracks and Sunset Ridge does a great job of keeping things entertaining. Michigan Motocross, Finally The District 16 motocross season finally made it to Michigan’s beautiful UP, at XMAS Motorsports Park, and it was a good one Christmas, Michigan - June 24th By Jeri Nyberg

X

mas Motorsports Park kicked off their District 16 season with a cloudy, cool, Upper Michigan Sunday, but that didn’t stop riders from taking to the track for some fast racing action. If you haven’t visited Xmas since last year, you’ll now find a beautifully covered start and a large viewing deck off the north pits - giving a bird’s eye view of the track. Xmas provided an extra day of fun on Saturday by running one of their series races. That evening all racing classes came together as one for a large, entertaining and competitive game of kickball in the middle of the starting line followed by a fireworks show. Sunday started off with a well prepped track and chilly 47 degree round of practice. The sun started to break through the clouds just in time to get the motos underway. Schoolboy 1 was the largest class of the day with entries. Moto one began with Haiden Waelchli out front with Jordan Biese hot on his heels and Andrew Combs in third. Biese got around Waelchli and the top three began to pull away. Behind them the rest of the field was mixing it up each lap. Blaise Morrison and Drake Dionne made up the top five. Ranger Flinchum was running

sixth and worked his way past Dionne and started to work towards Morrison. Morrison went down allowing Flinchum and Dionne past. As the top five settled in, the battle for positions behind them

heated up with a lot of close racing for the rest of the top ten spots. Leading the way behind the top five was Anthony Lindholm who hung onto sixth until the checkers.

Trevor Edwards went 1-1 in Sportsman B/C.

Saturday night kickball made for great evening entertainment and added to the fun factor of the weekend for sure.

Haiden Waelchli leading Schoolboy 1 into the first turn.

Moto two began with Combs putting his Yamaha out front. Biese got around Waelchli and Combs before the completion of the first lap and the top three began to pull away again. Morrison and Bailey Tuoriniemi were able to hold fourth and fifth until Flinchum passed them on lap three. At the checkers it was Biese taking the moto win, and rounding out the overall top 5 would be Preston Maki with 7-7 finishes. The boys in the Mini 65 class ran a good set of motos as well. Lance Torp took an early lead in moto one and quickly pulled away from the rest of the field. Brad Ottenad and Chase Dionne settled into second and third for the first two laps, but Chad Schmitt wasn’t far behind and had his sights set on third place. Thomas Luckey ran a solid fifth as Luca Paajanen and Daylon Teddy swapped spots every lap over sixth place. As the two raced against each other, they pushed closer to Luckey, almost catching him at the finish line. Moto two played out a little differently. Torp was able to get out front with Otte24

CYCLE USA, July 2018

nad behind him as Schmitt and Dionne went down off the line putting Teddy, Luckey, and Paajanen into the top five. Schmitt and Dionne put their heads down and were able to get themselves right behind Paajanen by the end of the first lap. Schmitt made his way past Paajanen with Dionne in tow as they then made their way towards Luckey just in front of them. Schmitt got past Luckey and the three of them then started to reel in Teddy whom was still running in third. On the third lap Schmitt jumped past Teddy and the two ran close until the end. Dionne was also able to get around Luckey moving himself into fifth. Teddy held onto fourth place and finished 6-4 for the day. The Open B riders were absolutely pushing just as hard as any class out here today. Moto one began with Marco Gravedoni out front with Ezra Graumann and Colin Hass right behind. By the half way point Graumann was able to make his away into the lead. As Graumann started to pull away, Hass jumped past Gravedoni moving up into second place. Filling the top five would be Joshua Nel-

son and Brice Sundquist as the checkered flag came out. Gravedoni pulled another holeshot in moto two and found himself with Hass and Nelson in pursuit. Exiting the sand section Gravedoni slid out allowing Hass, Nelson and Graumann by. Graumann quickly passed Nelson and he and Hass began to pull away from the group. On lap three Gravedoni worked his way up to Nelson and got around him in the whoops where he then remained third place until the checkers. Hass took the overall with 2-1 finishes in two very hard fought motos. 2017 District 16 Fan Favorite Track Xmas Motorsports Park didn’t disappoint this weekend and provided a great time for the whole family. John Anetsberger and crew put a lot of work into the track and it doesn’t look like they’re done working yet. If you didn’t get a chance to make it up north for this weekend, be sure to put their August double-header on your racing schedule! You be really glad you made the trip for a very nice weekend.

This changes it up for what corners and hills can be used. ranPrix and Hare Scrambles racOne of the bigger classes this year has ing returned to Fox Valley Off been85cc/ Supermini. Today fourteen Road for the father's day weekriders made the racing good, especially end. GP racing kicked it off on Saturday, mid pack. Conner Pilon won today, he and what a different a month makes. Learning that racing momany chose to stay in the shade, only tocross and woods makes you a much venturing out when it was time to race. more rounded racer. At GP races you Saturday's Gran Prix started out with a will often find Pilon at the front of the "reverse" layout so riders rode mostly pack with a good head of steam. He has recovered well after a end of the season get off last winter. Regan Doerr kept Pilon honest this race, in fact at one point leading a lap or two. Keegan Rowley mixed it up in the second moto as well. These three made for some of the best racing of the day. Landon Lee and Jake Mueller battled much of the race for fourth. Mueller is the kid we spoke of last story who has only ridding 2 years. Many in this class have rode since they were much younger. Ashton Lyons who pulled a third in the first moto had some issues and dnf'd the second. The Women's class is has seen a steady increase in ridership over the Mark Spizzirri on his “electric” Alta won the first +40B GP moto last couple years,

G

and riders like Morgan Wheelwright and Autumn Torres have now started to battle hard again. What these two didn't expect is there was another young lady who has been riding and practicing a lot. That would be Sarah Mchale on her CRF150R, Autumn and Morgan both ride KTM full size machines, while Sarah is on the oversized 4 stroke mini bike and she was putting in solid laps. Mchale had an issue in the first moto finishing a distant seventh, but in moto two she rode hard for a solid second place finish. New mom Darcie Graham has come back to racing as well. You always know when Darcie is here because Dad is out there making sure she is going well. Darcie has become a much better rider over the last few years, (she won the HS on Sunday) that Dad actually raced this weekend in the Thumper class and to top that off, he won! Wheelwright won the Women's class today with a solid 2-1 score. Torres went 1-3 after a great first moto, then a hiccup in moto two. B class is the melting pot. Motocross meets HS type racing at it's finest. The top five are a who's who in IL racing in their perspective types of racing. Thor Rick who is pretty much the woods kid around here won, with Jordan Mackiewicz taking second with Austin Beaty as well being here to rep the Stadium racing crowd. Noah Lee and Gavin Sienkiewicz rounded out the top five. Moving on to into Sunday’s Hare Scrambles racing and going through a very hot Saturday riders had another long hot day. One of the most notable feats of the day was delivered by Hall's Cycle's rider Jarred Hall. Jarred signed up and raced Open, A and the Vintage class on Saturday. Gp racing is 20-25 minute motos, and only four total (combined) motos raced Saturday, so 3 of the 4 motos Jarred was racing in. It was 95, no wind, muggy and he was pounding laps most of the day. This was the first half of his weekend as on Sunday in typical fashion he made his way to the sign up window and signed up to race both Vintage CYCLE USA, July 2018

(morning race) and A class in the afternoon race. Combined that is another 2:45 hours of racing. Thankfully Sunday was just a little cooler (90). His last race of the weekend did see him tumble down a steep hill, now his front fender was gone, and number plate hanging by a thread, he remounted and finished to win the A class after Garrett Ward's 250 locked up. Hats off to this young man and his Gas Gas from Hall's. True Ironman accomplishments here... those that know him, know it's just another weekend for him! The 85cc class on Sunday had ten riders line up for the hour long race. This like most all fathers day races is the "technical" event where if weather allows many hills and the "new" stuff gets added. With no rain some of the single track sections were incorporated into the course. 85cc and the rest of the youth morning race which kicks off at 9am got to see virgin, never before rode on trail

sections. The Doerr twins are sometimes referred to as the "twinados" as they can be a hand full! Regan is the woods kid, Reece is moto, so today Regan rockets off the line and pretty much runs off and hides. Jhak Walker came up from Southern IL to battle and led the first laps til Regan gained his confidence to take over. Reece did the "climb the ladder" race. Bike starting issues all week had him kicking and kicking while the class went through the first turn. He climbed from a first lap seventh to third as a last lap pass over Landon Lee put Reece on the box. Regan was the only rider in this class to do seven laps. AA class had Cody Barnes showing up on his new Beta 125. The thought was maybe Cody would be a little slower and might be able to be raced with. Nope. Cody didn't holeshot but wasted little time displacing Travis Ward and Tanner Whipple to go through the barrels in first and then never look back. Whipple decided today was the day to smooth out, step it up and not

play around, sliding past Ward on lap one. Colt Converse also was in this hunt, keeping on Whipple with some solid racing. Whipple finished up last season strong, had knee surgery and quite frankly didn't come out swinging as everyone expected. That changed today. Southern IL speedster Ty England showed, climbing up to third place ahead of Converse and Ryan Moss. Ward basically stopped helped Mikey Burtle out of a predicament late in the race and finished in last. +50A saw Greg Gourley win with Jay Hall pushing hard only to have brake issues late in the race which allowed Kevin Finefield to push his Hall's Husky past Hall. Lucas Roberts took the Open C win as Colin Armour came from eighth to second, earn every minute of that battle. Jeremy Fuchs stepped up on to the podium in third after a great ride as well. Fox Valley Off Road returns to racing for it's third double header on July 28/29th! Nothing like a full weekend of competition and more of the new trail they will have cut in by then.

LTM motocross heats up Casey, Illinois - May 27 By James & Rollanda Pinckard

M

emorial Day Weekend is always the date of the 500. With that said everyone thinks it’s the Indy 500 we’re talking about… but not this year. The talk for 2018 is the LTM 500. Lincoln Trail Motorsports hosted Round 4 of the Fly Showdown Series, paying District 17 points as well. The LTM 500 is named not for a distance but for the fact there were over 500 entries from 10 states. With the weather in the 90's it was hot and very hard to keep a good track with all the riders pounding it lap after lap. The LTM track crew was up to the task. Even with rough conditions the whole crew from the flaggers, staff, Zach Garrels & Eddie Kline battle.

track workers and EMTs, everyone did a great job and thank you. With the heat on and the track in great shape the motos were fast. +40A’s talent was crazy fast. In the first moto famous two-stroke supercross rider Ronnie Ford had switched to a new Honda, pulling the holeshot. Fellow Honda rider Billy Fosnock Sr. swept to the outside on the gas and stayed on the gas (even when the rear of the bike stepped out) riding it all the way to the scene of the crash. Ford was out front and running with Seven KTM rider Alex Ewing and Yamaha rider Mark Smith were in tow. In mx you always want excitement and Fosnock provided just that as he charged through the pack making his way all the way to Smith at the finish. In the second moto it was again a

Honda out front, this time it was Fosnock laying down serious lap times. Ewing was in second. Smith and his Yamaha held down a strong third with First moto winner Ford in tow. With a mix in the results the overall went to Ewing with Fosnock second, Ford third and Smith fourth. The 14-24 class had plenty of action for the fans. In the first moto, fresh off injury and his first day in the A class, Halls Husky-Fly rider Jason Gepford put in an amazing ride to garner the first moto win. Kawasaki rider Eric Watling finished second with KTM mounted Ryan Combs third. In the second moto Gepford and Watling were again out front battling for the overall. In the end Gepford took the moto and overall win with Watling second. It’s the battle for third that was a crazy. In the first moto Combs finished third but he couldn’t make the call for moto two. In the second moto Kawasaki rider Alex Thompson finished third but he failed to finish the first moto. Yamaha rider Logan Trigg finished fourth in the first moto but he also didn’t finish the second moto. Cycles R Us Yamaha rider Eddie Kline finished fifth in the first moto. In the second moto he had a battle with Eric Navel over fourth which he didn’t win and was again fifth. With Navel having a seventh in the first moto Kline was crowned third overall! Navel finished fourth overall. The 85 Open class had twenty-two racers chomping at the bit for the motos. The rider taking a serious bite out of the competition was Team Green’s Krystian Janik. This Illinois rider is expected to win on the national level with the strong support from Kawasaki. In the first moto Janik put on a school for the others - scrubbing, pounding the jumps and attacking each and every corner. The result was a strong moto win. Kawasaki rider Ace Enloe and Jake Colbert had the best seats in school taking second and third. When the bell rang for the second moto Janik called the class to order once again. Big St. Charles Suzuki rider Jake Colbert moved into second for the moto and overall as Enloe finished third for this moto. The Pee Wee class was easy as 1-2-3. In the first moto KTM rider Lincoln Paxton took the win as Reid East finished second ahead of Hudson Wright. The second

Father’s Day in Joliet Joliet, Illinois - June 17 By James & Rollanda Pinckard

W

ith the heat index well over 100 degrees on Saturday, practice at Joliet Motosports Park started early to finish before the worst of the heat set in. By 3 p.m. the pits were quiet. With temperatures and humidity expected to be soaring again for Sunday’s races, talk of ‘I wonder if we’ll have a light turnout tomorrow?’ could be heard. Early Sunday morning’s line of trucks and campers at the gate answered that: This is motocross… we race. One class that didn’t seem to miss a beat despite the heat was Open C. Off the gate it was the Kawasaki of Nick Holda, the Yamaha of Ethan Eslinger and Luke Jackson on his KTM beating the rest of the field to the first turn. Jackson went down in the opening lap and settled for eighth. Eslinger was quickly passed by KTM racer Eric Siebert who stayed right behind Holda until the fastest Crider of the day caught up to both, passing smoothly and never looking back.

Crowley was on fire as he got by Holda for the top spot. The second saw Holda again out front early before Crowley flew by in the second lap. Holda and Siebert again took second and third. This time Jackson kept it on two wheels and he battled with Eslinger the entire moto. Jackson got the last pass on Eslinger went 4-5 for fourth overall still. This Sunday was also Father’s Day, and it was easy to see how much of a family sport this really is… especially in

+30B/C. There were three Kooistra’s at the gate! D17 Ironman Andy Kooistra (who also ran +40B/C & 50B/C) was a proud pop as he had two of his boys racing with him. Loretta’s bound Scott Kooistra had his Honda out front from the first twitch of the gate. Though James Bagby’s Yamaha was never far behind, Scott picked the prime lines, stayed on the gas and was out front the entire moto. Behind them was Jerome Schutzenhofer and Roland Gomez on his KTM. Schutzenhofer killed his bike half way

through the race and wasn’t able to kick it back to life, taking the DNF and leaving Gomez to take the checkers in third. Coming in close behind Gomez was the third Kooistra, Brian on his Honda. After the battle out front in moto one you knew it was going to be a good race in moto two between Scott Kooistra and Bagby, and the spectators weren’t disappointed. This time it was the blue bike of Bagby that everyone was chasing. Kooistra was never far behind but Bagby wasn’t going to have a repeat of the first moto. Kooistra had won the Open B class just two races earlier and didn’t seem to have enough gas left in the tank to challenge for the win. Bagby stayed hard on the throttle and his 2-1 put him on the top spot on the podium. Gomez was Steady Eddie, going 3-3 for the day and taking the last step on the podium. Behind him though was a battle between Brian Kooistra and the Honda of Juan Wonders. At the checker it was Wonders beating Kooistra. Wonders was fourth overall with his 5-4 and Kooistra’s 4-5 put him in fifth overall. Schutzenhofer glided in ahead of Papa Kooistra, who didn’t seem to mind at all. Andy Kooistra is one of D17’s old38

school riders, still racing two - three classes at every event. He said racing mx is the most fun a person can have without the police chasing ‘em. When I asked him about racing with the boys he laughed and said they want him to wear a go-pro so they can watch their starts. The Kooistras are a tight group on and off the track, and with five grandkids running around we may have more of them to write about soon! 14-24 is one of those in-between classes with fast guys and smaller gates. At the gate drop the KTM of Kyle Campbell went a bit to the inside, leaving Davey Fitzpatrick having to sweep outside. Campbell

claimed the holeshot and the race was on! It wouldn’t take long for Fitzpatrick to find his way around Campbell, but neither one was letting off the throttle because wildman Eddie Kline was never far behind. Fitzpatrick, Campbell and Kline finished 1-2-3 in both motos. Coming in fourth overall was the six year-old Honda with its twenty-one year old racer who was wearing a thirty-two year old jersey. Sam Trainor, a senior in Ag Business at Illinois State University, came to the gate sporting the best throwback jersey of the day – his dad’s jersey from 1986. Mark Trainor raced mx back in the 80’s and though he only wrenches now, coming back to Joliet MX to spend a day at the track with his son was the best Father’s Day gift Sam could give him. No one seems to mind the heat less than the kids in the 65cc classes. Even when it’s 100 degrees these kids run every lap of practice, race a couple classes, then ride around ‘til their mom calls them for supper. And here at Joliet they run four classes for the 65’s – Open, Sr., Jr., and the clutch class. The gate is filled with little racers blowing two-stoke

Becky & Shawn Mains with racer Gavin and wrench-phenom Carter

smoke when the Sr., Jr., and Clutch class come to the line. Jax Ellul was through Joliet’s famous grass start before the other racers were even kicking up a gear. Ellul had no problem going 1-1 for the day in this class. Behind him things were a lot tighter. While Joey Arnold on his KTM tried to keep Ellul in his sights, Braden Immormino, and the Kawasaki’s of Kole Petta and Gavin Mains were mixing it up. It was Mains who got the worst start, but that only seemed to focus him. He got around Petta but couldn’t find the line to get past Immormino. Moto one ended with Ellul, Arnold and Immormino ahead of Mains and Petta. The second moto saw the same front runners, but this time Mains wasn’t going to be stopped from getting his place on the podium. He came in ahead of both Immormino and Petta, and the 4-3 finish got Mains where he wanted to be today. Mains’ 12-year old brother Carter, does his wrenching and we all know that a great mechanic is worth his weight in

gold. Carter’s already working at a small-engine shop and basically built Gavin’s bike! Mom Becky and dad Shawn (who races Vintage) were also celebrating their wedding anniversary on this Father’s Day. Congrats to the entire family! Megacross gets one in! Mendota, Illinois - June 23 By Josh Rud, Shift One Photography

W

ith the first days of summer finally here and the rain still posing problems along with the heat, Megacross got off the ground last weekend, but just barely. The Midwest weather hasn’t been kind, raining out two events already and if it wasn’t for a bit of sun on Saturday morning and a very hard working crew this might have been the third. By the time practice started the race surface was very tacky and providing a lot of traction. This made for some great racing, and the

Open C riders enjoying a nice night; # 199 Jacob Marquette, #78 Joe Quest and #252 Emily Smith

weather didn’t keep anyone from getting out here for racing under the lights! The night was odd to say the least with three significant crashes happening within thirty minutes, putting a hold up on the schedule with a lot of ambulance visits unfortunately. After the races I spoke with event promoter Gerhard Ward about the situation, he said: “Josh I don't know what to say, we’ve ran races here for over 25 years and never ever had something like this. The track was as good as I’ve seen it in a long time. The jumps and obstacles all were prime not a lip, hole nothing! We looked and

watched and seen nothing. Three hard crashes in 25-30 minutes is simply unheard. Our hearts, prayers and thoughts are with Noah, Mikah, and Riley - hoping they will recover well, fast and strong. Three different sections, three different age groups, I just don't know why and that is what really makes me as a long time rider/ racer and promoter wonder what the hell. These three boys we all know well and their families ride at all our locations and have for a long time, it's just gut wrenching.” It goes without saying that this sport can be dangerous and riders can get hurt,

This is all Chad Johnson and Kyle White all right while riding in three A classes, and winthere moving in the whoops. It may have only been heat race, but they were going for it just as hard. After a couple laps Johnson tipped it over in a corner letting White by to second and Charlie Buffum moving into third. Coming down the straight it was Zach Coons now on the move getting around Buffum and pushing towards the front. With the white flag waving Six made a mistake losing the front end, allowing White into the lead, Coons to second and Buffum back up to third as they charged around for the final lap. The main was similar with White getting the holeshot this time and not looking back. There was a lot of contention for lead, but when the checkers flew it was White taking the win once again, this time with Coons in second and Brian White in third. 250C was packed as ever with so many riders there was two classes. The Megacross crew did an amazing job prepping an awesome race surface for everyone to enjoy tonight. Schlegels run wild Millville, Minnesota - June 10 By Rolfe Otterness

T

he father-son duo of Ray and Tanner Schlegel teamed up to take a boat load of trophies home at the latest Spring Creek Park motocross. Ray pounded out a 1-2 score as he topped the +40A class, then scored a 2-2 for a second overall finish behind the legendary Chad Pederson in 45A. The younger Schlegel (Tanner) had an even more busy schedule as he ran up front in all four motos of 65cc 10-11 and 65cc 7-11, then jumped on his 85cc bike for a 2-2 tally behind the soon-to-be legend Wyatt Mcgrath. These lucky dogs were just a few of the successful riders to tackle the nearly-mythical Spring Creek circuit, but it was only possible thanks to the efforts of John (Mr. Motocross) Martin and his crew as they salvaged the race after copious rains on Saturday. As usual the track shaped up pretty well as Sunday was precip-free, still some of the hills were deleted from the course to protect everyone involved.

Wyatt Mcgrath roosted the troops to take over the lead as the 85cc 9-11 class took track possession in moto one. Wyatt

Gibson and Braxton Kragenbring trailed early but Tanner Schlegel was moving up and by moto-end he had secured second.

+40C hits turn one with Steve Moyle out front.

Kragenbring was third over Vince Harens and Gibson. Mcgrath motored into the lead in the next moto while Schlegel and Kragenbring slotted into the 2-3 spots. Mcgrath was flying and extended his lead while Kragenbring kept Schlegel honest for most of the race, but tucked the front end just before starting the last lap. Jaxon Nagel got by while Kragenbring was restarting. The checkered fell with Mcgrath quite a bit clear from Schlegel. A ways back Nagel crossed the line with a charging Kragenbring a few bike lengths behind. Lance Geis topped his first moto seventh with a fifth this time out. Steve Moyle slithered through the glop on the start straight to grab the holeshot in moto one of the +40C class. It looked like the slightly slippery conditions weren’t much of a hindrance as he led all the way to the wave of the checkered flag. Marshall Payton and Josh Fischer settled into a good pace as they ran 2-3 through the moto as Fischer was only a bike length short as they hit the finish line table top. Kelly Martin and Wade Brown scooted across for fourth and fifth. Payton took his turn leading early in moto two with Fischer and Moyle running just behind as they edged away from the rest of the pack. Fisher really poured on the pressure on the last lap and seized the lead. Fischer’s 3-1 score topped Payton’s 2-2 for the overall. Moyle finished

third, just a tad adrift of the top two while Martin and Jesse John rounded out the top five. The aforementioned Tanner Schlegel scooted into the front runner spot as the 65cc 10-11 class launched from the gate in moto one. He had pursuit from Ethan Rennie and Vincent Harens as they pulled away from the pack. Schlegel went on to win with a couple of seconds gap as Zaine Randall and Chase Chyma pulled off the 4-5 finishes. Schlegel and Rennie ran out front in moto two with Schlegel pulling a few seconds of margin on Rennie by the end with Harens again third. Kyler Hagedorn and Chyma were the next two riders to hit the finish line. Dyracuse Hillclimb It was another perfect day of racing on this cool and impressive hill Dyracuse, Wisconsin - June 10 Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club

S

torms and heavy rain slipped south of the legendary Dyracuse hill climb Saturday night. With a threat of more rain coming later in the day on Sunday, everyone was thinking this could be a one run day. That all said, we had a perfect day for racing.... all day. Clouds eventually slipped away, the sun came out and it was perfect. The hill was dry, fast and set up just right by the dedicated Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club. To summerize, it was a fantastic day. Racing started with the 65cc and 85Jr classes where Lane Brookshaw and Brady Kirchner traded places at the top of the podium. Brookshaw set the two fastest 65cc class times for that win, while Kirchner’s first climb in 85Jr his hard fought victory. In the 200cc class Bodee O’Neil and Jason Laven held the two fastest times after the first round - and by a little over a second compared to any others in the class. O’Neil’s 8.63 was just a slight six thousands of a second faster than Laven. When round two came to the hill, Laven turned up the heat as he dropped a tenth of a second off his earlier run... to a 8.512 seconds. O’Neil ran an almost identical time as his first run, having to settle for second by less than a tenth of a second. Jared Marty, Shane Sandmeyer and Kyle Marty rounded out the top five. Laven after getting the 200 class win, “The first round went really well. I was sitting in second place after that as I got up nice and smooth. This last round I really wanted to get out of the hole well. The hill is getting rough up near the first jump. From there it is just wide open and get to the top. I think times will get faster as the day goes on and we all figure out the hill. The first breakers are making all the difference. It’s just great getting out here and riding in the really nice weather.” 48

Bradley Marking charging hard to third place in the Open class.

The talented Bodee O’Neil topped the 125cc and 250cc classes.

As some of the same riders stepped up to the 250cc class, Jared Marty led the fifteen riders after his first round 8.79 time held up against Laven, O’Neil and Colton Landarer as they all broke the nine second mark. Most everyone found more speed in the second round, but none of them could top O’Neil’s very nice 8.528 run. Casey Virkus shaved a bunch of time off his

first round to finish second at 8.529 seconds, one thousandth behind O’Neil. O’Neil Five Star/ Plummer Concrete/ Feine Tune Motorsports backed O’Neil after grabbing his second win of the day, the other having come in the 125cc class, “The bottom of the hill is key to getting through it all. You really have to weight the pegs and stay low. Last year I moved up to a 250f and then this year I added the 450. I like the bike even though it can be a bit scary - but you just have to send it up and go.” The 450cc class saw even more heavy hitters come out and Logan Peterson led them all after the first round. Just off his pace was Luke Cipala, O’Neil, Jake Rademacher, Bradley Marking, Jason Laven and three others that broke into the eight second range in the sixteen rider field. As everyone clicked off improving times in round two, Rademacher put in a Easton Mack with no fear in the Miro Mini class nice 8.177 climb for the

lead late in the action. A smiling Rademacher, “Today is going really good and I have my bike running really well. I had it at the dyno last week and worked some stuff out so this is all good. Getting up the hill fast is all about how clean you get through the bottom. The first wall and not getting too much air on the first jump. If you can keep the wheels down and power on you’ll get up fast.” His ride was impressive and held up for third place as next up, Luke Cipala really put the hammer down breaking yet another barrier for the day with his new fast time of 7.963 seconds. Peterson had his chance yet to go and also improved, but it was just four hundredths short of Peterson and he finished in second, just ahead of Rademacher. The top three being separated by only two tenths of a second. Peterson may have missed the win in the 450 class, but he was back in the fast 600 class. He held the lead after round one, slightly as Cipala and Mike Wood were super close. In round two Wood had a mechanical failure keep him from the top, then Cipala dropped almost half a second off his time to take the class lead. Peterson had to be thinking no way

while Van Langen – who secured a ride just a few days before the event – came home in third over Funk and Zeidler. Bob Timmons topped the Board Tracker heat and final, but both times he needed to overcome Michael Lange and his rabbit-quick starts. Lange’s 1921 Harley-Davidson Banjo Two-Cam was quickest off the start, but Timmons’ 1925 Harley-Davidson Two-Cam engine had more speed as the laps wore on. Timmons’ final lap was a 58.70mph trip around the 1/3-mile track. Casey Ketterhagen brought his rare 1925 HarleyDavidson factory FHAC Twin-Cam engine home in third place over Kory

Postotnik’s 1924 Harley-Davidson JD Twin and Bill Rodencal’s 1915 HarleyDavidson 61ci Twin. Jesse Janisch grabbed the holeshot in Junior/ Expert heat #1 and appeared to have smooth sailing to the finish. Maloney had other ideas and used the acceleration of his Indian FTR750 to take the lead from Janisch on the last lap. Jake Walter claimed the last transfer spot. JR Schnabel led every lap of heat race #2, taking Chad Cose and Jake Fell into the final. Four-time Daytona 200 winner Danny Eslick grabbed the lead in heat #3 on lap 2 and wheelied his way to the victory. Morgen Mischler and Bronson Bauman claimed the last transfers. Rob Pearson’s Harley-Davidson XR750 bumped Kyle Meiers from the top spot in the semi. Christian Johnson took second while Mike Inderbitzin bumped Meiers from the last transfer spot on the last lap. The 15th edition of the Jim Sumner Memorial Dash For Cash pulled the top Yamaha single, top Honda single, and top Husqvarna single, plus the top HarleyDavidson twin, top Indian twin, and top Kawasaki twin for a six-lap shootout with an inverted start. Damon Coca (Husqvarna) sat on the pole, with Pearson (Harley-Davidson twin) right behind, followed by Bauman (Kawasaki), Janisch (Yam), Schnabel (Hon), and Maloney (Indian twin) rounding out the field. Coca led the field into turn 1, but Pearson out-accelerated going down the back straight and led after lap one over Coca, Baumann, Schnabel, Maloney, and Janisch. Schnabel leapt into second on lap two but was unable to put a dent in Pearson’s lead. Pearson took the popular win on “this old Milwaukee Iron” XR750 over Schnabel, Maloney, and Bauman. Maloney would claim the $1,000 Hard Charger award. Maloney grabbed the holeshot in the Junior/ Expert final with Schnabel, Eslick, Cose and Janisch right behind. Maloney immediately began stretching his lead, bit by bit and let the fracas behind him keep everyone’s attention. By lap three Mischler joined the fray using his patented high line in turn two to race around everyone else until he was in third spot on lap three. He and Eslick began dicing, with Mischler finally taking the runner-up spot on lap seven. Cose took over the third spot and began to hound

two; giving way to Vestal and DeRuyter, and Vestal to third, but ran out of time as the two-time winner, taking the spot but Houpt charged back around to re-take Houpt took his first ever Dairyland Clasaway on the penultimate lap. Maloney the lead on lap three. On lap six, Dave sic win. jubilantly crossed the line with a fist in Kilkenny dropped DeRuyter to fourth the air over Cose, Mischler, Schnabel, Eslick, Janisch and Walter. Amateur class winner #90 Brady Lange celebrates with Emmett Sund (#20) and Michael Van Langen Pearson’s XR750 had baked the clutch during the Dash for Cash, so tenth was all he could muster. DeRuyter claimed the first Hooligan heat over Jordan Baber and Dave Kilkenny. Vestal led JJ Flairty and Dan Lauters into the final from heat #2, while Jordan Houpt passed early leader Louie Lauters to win heat #3, with Jason Schreffler taking the final transfer. Van Langen claimed the Hooligan semi over Sam Fischer and Mark Martinich. Houpt grabbed the holeshot and led Vestal, DeRuyter, Lauters, and Flairty after lap one. Houpt nearly lost it on lap

Memorial Day Weekend Springfield, Illinois - May 26-28 By Tim McBride and Gordon Lunde

Bromley blazes Springfield TT

T

he American Flat Track Pro Singles championship Series made its midwest swing to the Springfield IL., home of the Multi-Purpose Arena for round 7 of its 18 event series, where Dan Bromley became the series’ only two time event winner by topping the Springfield TT. Bromley who hails from Warrington, PA followed up his Daytona TT win becoming the only two-time main event winner in the series thus far. Springfield always brings out the best in talent ranging from various disciplines as well as regions of the world. Sixty AFT Pro Singles contenders were on hand to qualify for the eighteen precious

Open Singles and 450 Amatuer winner Dallas Daniels hales from Matoon IL.

#62 Dan Bromley and #132 Jesse Janisch finished a close first and second at the Springfield TT.

starting grid positions. Off-road superstar Ryan Sipes who had only raced a handful of flat track events was fast qualifier. Max Whale came all the way from Australia and Oliver Brindley flew in from England. All three riders were featured in the main event. The competition is always tight at Springfield and making the main event requires lots of talent as well as a bit of luck as heats and semis are frequently home for traffic jams and spills. A handful of previous event winners (Ryan Wells, Morgan Mischler, Kevin Stollings) were seen loading their trucks before the main event was underway. The Main event was red flagged when series point leader Brandon Price was involved in a heavy crash. The restart saw TT specialist and Roof Systems/ West Bend H-D sponsored Jesse Janisch with the lead followed by Bromley, Jay Newton from Texas, Brindley and the rest of a hungry pack. Pole sitter Sipes jumped the start and started from the back row in effect leaving him out of contention. Bromley slipped by Janisch after lap one for the lead and although he was held in close check by Janisch throughout the

race Bromley went on for his second win of the season. Brindley and Newton argued closely over the final podium spot and it wasn’t secured until the checkered flag flew as Brindley got the nod. “It’s always great racing with Jesse (Janisch),” said Bromley. “ He’s fun to ride with. A lot of guys in the top five out here you know you can trust. You can be rough with and they’ll be rough with you, but you know it will be clean.” The Amateur program that was held with the AFT program featured a pair of multi class winners. Dallas Daniels from Mattoon, IL won the Open Singles and the 450 Amateur classes. Kash Schnoeske doubled down as well in the Open Vintage and 250 Amateur classes. Both riders were battling against top amateurs who were in town for the week-long Amateur Nationals taking place this week in Springfield. Daniels eventually went on to win the coveted Nicky Hayden Horizon Award.

Carver Cuts Up the AFT Twins Competition

S

unday’s race day ended early thanks to a sudden storm that not only dropped a lot of rain in a short time, but it also knocked out the power to the fairgrounds. There wasn’t enough time to dry the track and restore power, so the race was postponed to Monday. The sun rose Monday morning bright and hot, which is good for drying a wet race track and it was race time once again. A good number of fans stayed over for the Monday program and enjoyed the great weather. What’s better than a Springfield Mile? Two days of racing on “The World’s Fastest Mile”! With all the heat races and some semis run on Sunday, Monday would see a short, but exciting program. The Springfield Mile never ceases to provide great racing. First up was the inaugural AFT Production Twins race. Michael Inderbitzin, riding his Kawasaki Ninja 650, turned out to be the star of the race after getting a bad start. He then fought his way back through the entire pack to win the event. The AFT Twins race belonged to Jef-

frey Carver and his Roof Systems/ Indian of Metro Milwaukee Scout FTR750. Carver is a midwest favorite as an Illinois native riding a Milwaukee Indian dealer sponsored machine. A hot battle ensued in the early laps between Carver and four other riders, all aboard Indian Scout FTR 750s. Jared Mees, points leader and winner of the last Springfield Mile, fought hard along with Kenny Coolbeth. Bryan Smith joined the fray aboard his factory Indian along with Davis Fisher. As the race progressed, Carver made strides in building a small gap on the field and fending off anyone that tried to make a run on him. Carver took the victory to a standing ovation, with nearly a full sec-

ond advantage, which in recent races here is a good lead. Mees grabbed second at the line followed by Coolbeth, Davis and Smith.

Door County Trials Event dedicated to the recovery efforts of Phil Smage Door County, Wisconsin - June 2-3 By Kevin Huber

T

he Wisconsin Observed Trials Association’s fourth annual trials event in Door County was held on June 2nd and 3rd at the Al Gustafson property on the shore of Little Sturgeon Bay. Every place that has trials events is unique. The Door County event put on by Trialsmaster Ryan Gustafson is no exception. Half of the sections are set up where years ago construction was started for a waterpark. They abandoned the project, but left some interesting limestone and concrete structures that make challenging and interesting obstacles. The terrain has a lot of loose limestone that requires a smoother riding style. If the rider tries to pause and restart moving they can spin out causing them to have to put their foot down for a penalty point. Then there are the steep cliffs. They can be a challenge to go up or down. The other half of the property is in the woods and this year there were plenty of tight turns around trees on the side hills that proved to be a challenge. Another factor in trials is how things can get slippery when they get wet. The water park has so much limestone that rain has little effect on it. It did rain Saturday night, but the riding was still great. The only problems were a few logs in the woods that became pretty slippery. 58

CYCLE USA, July 2018

This year’s event turnout was a little larger than past years. There were several riders from Illinois that had heard about the terrain and made the trip to take the challenge. There are also a number of new riders to the sport in Wisconsin this year. This was the first event for a few of them. They all enjoyed their experience and stated they would be back for more. On the sad side, one of our top riders was not able to attend. Champ rider Phil

Smage had been in an accident while filming a stunt for a movie being made by Travis Prastrana called “Action Figures the Movie 2”. Phil was attempting a world record UTV jump that went wrong. He will have a long road to recovery and we dedicated the event to him. Mike Pohl Memorial ride Theilman, Minnesota - May 19/20 By Bob Maki

Milo Bjerke with Kristi and Charlie Pohl.

T

he Golden Eagles Motorcycle Club proudly hosted the Mike Pohl Memorial Ride at the Zumbro Bottoms in Theilman, MN. Mike was a long time District 23 Enduro & Harescramble rider who passed away suddenly while trail riding on September 30th, 2017. He and a group of friends were trail riding at the Martineau trail system near Akeley, MN when he passed away. The weather was great, trail conditions perfect and everyone was having a great time. After a long day on the trail, most of the riders called it quits, but Mike and a few others decided to ride another eight miles on this fabulous day. Mike was roosting the trail and having a great time right up to the end. Sadly Mike's heart stopped 50 feet from the trail head. He was 56 years young. Mike grew up in Bemidji, MN. In 1978 he raced his first enduro. Not just any local enduro but a National Enduro in Grand Rapids, MN. He was a go big or go home type of guy! He raced the Grand Rapids enduro again in 1979, then took a 21 year break. For his 39th birthday he bought another dirt bike and started racing again in 2000. Mike raced regularly after that and in 2012 his son Charlie entered his first adult enduro. Mike was one proud PaPa that day!

Pre-ride as everyone gets ready for the parade lap.

CYCLE USA, July 2018

Mike was a creative entrepreneur who created two businesses from the groundup. He was an avid reader and a WWII history buff, loved music, was an excellent photographer and was always interested in high-tech gadgets. He loved to interact with people, once you met him you had a good friend from then on; he was a very likable guy. Mike loved to take photos. He would always ride on row 1 of any enduro. Then, after riding, he would take his cam-

era and head back into the woods to photograph all the riders finishing the race. He would then spend countless hours compiling a slide show for the District 23 Off-Road banquet with a different theme every year. In 2011 he created the video documentary "Endless Sunday" interviewing D23 riders and telling the Enduro story, it is on You Tube and has over 15,000 views. He took thousands of magazine-quality photos of his fellow riders. Mike has contributed articles and photos in this magazine also. Mike loved the Theilman Trail ride, it was his favorite place to ride. We shared those trails and camped together for over fifteen years. The 2017 fall trail ride was the last time most of us had the pleasure of seeing and riding with Mike. After taking a self-imposed riding ban for the summer of 2017 to finish a big project, he was very excited to ride that weekend, he rode the wheels and gas cap off his KTM! His wife Kristi requested that the 2018 spring trail ride be held in Mike’s honor, and the Golden Eagles stepped up to the plate and provided an excellent event.

The trail conditions were never better, with perfect dirt and cool weather. I think Mike was shining down on all of us! Talking with Matt Stavish on the trail he said, "This place has the best variety of trail and the best dirt in the country." Now that's saying a lot from a racer who has ridden all over the USA. Saturday afternoon a parade lap was held in Mike’s honor. His son Charlie rode Mike’s bike, leading a long line of riders to the overlook where his wife Kristi shared a few Mike with his son Charlie at his first adult enduro. stories of Mike and his love At Kristi’s request I spent Sunday for the Theilman ride. That just so hapspreading Mike’s ashes on all of his fapened to fall right around her birthday vorite trails and spots where he often and their anniversary every year! Some crashed... He loved a good challenge, of Mike’s ashes were spread by Kristi, like climbing the Ant Hill, along with the Charlie and other friends. There were rocky section at the Scenic Overlook. plenty of tears shed for our buddy.

This year’s trail boss was Kelsey Grindhaug, a third generation Golden Eagles member who did an exceptional job laying out a very fun loop! Every year the Golden Eagles clear the trail of winter deadfall in the spring. After the ride they groom the trails for the horse riders to use until we are back there again for the fall ride. Then they do it all over again, a hardworking crew lead by Milo Bjerke gets the job done. The spring ride had 780 riders including 155 youth and 150 plus out of state riders. Everyone left with a smile on their face after riding the 45 miles of epic trail in honor of Mike! Next time you are riding your bike, twist that throttle a little more and ride a little longer for our buddy Mike! R.I.P. Dear friend we ALL miss you. Happy Trails Mike Pohl, you made the MOST of it!
