Ross Thompson 1969 – 2009

he Minnesota amateur racing community suffered a sad loss with the untimely passing of Ross Thompson. Ross was a longtime member of the Straight Arrow Enduro Riders and had been a District 23 Motocross Class Rep for the last several years. He passed away where he was probably most comfortable, in the pits of a motocross race. As this was written, the cause was believed to be coronary heart disease. He was 39 years old. Besides quietly helping out any way he could with club events and for the district, he encouraged and helped many riders. He was the mechanic and personal sponsor for Mike Evenson, when Mike rode several AMA Pro Nationals in 2006. Said Mike, “Ross was the most genuine, kindhearted person that you have ever met. He was never out to judge you or put you down in any way. If Ross could help someone out, even if it meant putting a damper on his plans, he was right there.” He’ll always be remembered for his easy smile and willingness to pitch in with whatever needed to be done. He was a good club member, and an even better person. He will be dearly missed.

Motosports Factory and KTM will be holding a new bike demo ride at the Friday practice session preceeding Aztalan’s Dirty Old Blasters Vet race on Sept. 11th. Riding is open to anyone qualified to participate in the practice session.

LTM has perfect day for Illini event Casey, Illinois - July 19 By James Pinckard

ound five of the Illini Super Series was welcomed by a truly beautiful day. Not just for July, but any time of the yeartemps in the upper 70’s and sunshine. The LTM crew had a perfect track for the riders all day! With such perfect conditions and an event like the Illini series it made for some great racing. The best race of the day came in the 250B class. In the first moto Honda rider Cody Mcmurray took the win ahead of Curtis Batson. Third went to KTM rider David Howard. So with all the top riders in place from the first moto you would usually be able to expect some of the same in a second moto... not this time. In the second moto Kawasaki rider Mitch Koebele took the win but a first moto DNF took him out for the overall. Second went to Suzuki two-stroke rider Dakota Blakeney who took the overall win after beating the moto scores of Zack Hoffman who finished 4-3. Fourth for the moto and third overall went to David Howard. Another great race came in the Super Mini with Keeze Carver taking the first moto win. KTM rider Aaron Thompson finished second with Matthew Bell third. In the second moto Carver again won. Bell was on the gas and had him in his sights, and after taking the overall in 85Sr over he wanted another for the day but it was not to be. The +35 class is sort of an odd duck to say the least. The class was once a district class, then it wasn’t, yet it still has a class at the amateur National in Loretta Lynn’s. A while back this class was brought back as a

trophy class for the riders who didn’t want to compete in the other age money classes. The thing is I think someone forgot to tell that to the racers as this class is becoming one of the biggest at many events! Today the riders again proved how serious it can be. In the first moto Yamaha rider Mike Sullivan took the win with Honda rider Shawn Mcmurray second and Kristofer Wildhaber third. In the second moto the class was turned upside down leaving a three way tie in points for third! Sullivan again Dakota Blakeney won the exciting 250B class. took the win and overall. Mataya, Anderson ace Cambridge Cambridge, Minnesota - July 18 By Tim McBride

ick Mataya and Kevin Anderson each scored hard earned victories in the 450 and Open Pro classes during the On-Track Promotions dirt track race held at the Isanti County fairgrounds. A record number of 206 entries combined from District 23 and 16 filed through the gates to compete in this rare double-district points paying event. The first of two 450 Semi-Pro heat #11k Kevin Anderson was the night’s Open Pro winner. races saw Nick Mataya and big brother (national #29) Jake Mataya slide past early race leader Dj Slosser to finish one-two. The second heat race went to District 16’s Brock Schwarzenbacher and local hotshoe Josh Koch. Come main event time, it was Nick Mataya scoring the win followed closely by Schwarzenbacher. Jake Mataya finished a solid third ahead of Anderson who cunningly stole fourth place from Koch at the finish line. The Open Semi-Pro class appeared to be a District 16 retaliation as Schwarzenbacher and Hartford, Wis#27 Alex Felland consin’s Jesse Janisch won the two heat won the 85cc class. races. Grant Shines at Red Bud National

elcome to a new era in American Motocross with the newly re-constructed 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championships. Among the big changes is the new Saturday racing format where tech, practice and qualifying take place in the morning hours that lead up to the final two motos of the 450cc and 250cc classes. Coming from northeast Wisconsin, I’ve made the trek to Red Bud since 1992 and this has been the first time that I didn’t stay at the track and take part in amateur racing and the fun festivities at night. I simply ran out of vacation so I had to cut corners just to get to one of the best tracks in the country. Our party left at 2:00 in the morning and made some pretty good time through Chicago during the early hours of the Fourth of July. We arrived early, and had a little time to kill so we headed towards the pits to check out all of the sights and sounds before practice started at 8:30. I just love looking at all of the big rigs in the pits, the colors and attention to detail of each and every vehicle. Even for the privateers trying to make the show, everything is so organized and well thought out. Then the bikes, all fresh and ready to go, just gives you chills and wishing you were on one of them. Last minute checks and services by the mechanics and a few team talks were going on so we decided to check out the track. We headed around

the entire track and it looked like something from a dream. Deep, loamy sand covered the whole course, groomed to perfection that just barked to be ridden on. The jump faces were flawless and the corners seemed like you could go anywhere wide open. The big plateau in the valley with the signature Red Bud written in red spray paint on the new sod that was laid on the side so the spectators could see, that was spectacular. Everything on the track was done to perfection. Kudos to the Ritchie Family and their enormous efforts in making Red Bud what it is, the best track east of the Mississippi. There was only one thing wrong, well, maybe two. Cool temperatures in the low 60s kept clothing to a minimum on the Red Bud hotties cruising in the pits and track grounds. That was surely disappointing to some if not many motoheads. The other gripe was all the banners that streamed the track sides. I understand it’s for sponsorship and television exposure but this was a little overkill and tough to see if you were fence side during the races. Motocross is one sport where you really want to get close to the action and feel a part of the races, but the long banners streaming the sides were just too much. All in all though, Red Bud looked marvelous as usual. Soon after practice kicked off as the machines took to the track ripping off a few free laps before the timed sessions began. Jason Lawrence looked very fast early on but when the top twenty riders came out, his times were soon lost in the mix. To me, the

250 class is the one to watch. That said, the 450s have seen four different winners in six races, that’s what you want to see I guess. I love the 250s, especially when they get out for practice early on and the bikes are just begging for more power in the sand, but once the lines are made, these little thumpers haul and rival lap times of the 450s. The competition is unreal in this class with the smooth Frenchman Christophe Pourcel leading the way with Ryan Dungey close behind and add newcomers Justin Barcia and Tommy Searle to the mix, this racing is the best. After practice I then headed towards the track to get my spot on the start. The Red Bud start is long and very fast and each bike is tapped out and the riders are very trust worthy headed through the first left hander and into the right hand corner before the ski jump. It’s an awesome place to be taking photos, and it happens so fast. With a few chants of Red Bud from the faithful in the infield, Red Bud was ready to get underway with the 450 class leading the first gate drop. The question was who was gonna step up at Red Bud and come away with a win. The previous week at Thunder Valley MX, Honda’s Ivan Tedesco took his first win in the 450 class while series points leader Chad Reed felt sub par and suffered on the weekend. Although Chad Reed has lagged on his starts aboard his Suzuki, he pulled one out during the first moto at Red Bud. Andrew Short followed Reed closely and actually put a pass on Reed early on. Short built a nice

lead on the field and was looking for his first win of the series. Ricky Dietrich moved into the top four battling with Josh Grant but Grant got around him while the battle for fifth was between Tedesco, Tommy Hahn and Jason Lawrence. Hahn eventually crashed out in the sand whoops. By the midway point of the moto, Reed put a charge on Short while Grant kept plugging away in third. A mistake by Short at the bottom of the hill let Reed around for the lead with about four laps remaining. Grant overtook Short and set his sights on Reed as Grant used every possible line on the track to catch Reed. Reed looked back a few times even as they headed over LaRocco’s Leap and with two corners remaining it was a battle to the finish line as Reed went outside while Grant checked inside and scrubbed the finish line jump but it wasn’t enough as Reed pulled out the first moto win by a mere three-tenths of a second. “I’ve been working on my speed every week, I know I got the speed to do it and I know if I have good lap times, I’m right in it,” said Grant. “This championship is right here for me to grab.” “The tracks have changed a lot, this was a good race, tough too. It was typical Red Bud, a

great track to be up front but a rough one to be behind someone,” Reed said. The second moto had Ivan Tedesco out

to the lead with Reed, Short, and Michael Byrne close behind. Grant sat in the fifth spot. Grant worked his way into third by passing Reed, and then started to work on Short over the tabletop jump. Grant worked the bike hard staying lower over the jumps and muscling through the corners and whoops. Grant made the pass to the front and was clearly on his way to victory as he set some blistering lap times. Tedesco and Reed came together in the final corner as Tedesco held off Reed for the second spot but his 4-2 scores were only good enough for third behind Reed’s 1-3 tallies. Yamaha’s Josh Grant was clearly the fastest man on the track. Andrew Short finished fourth overall via 3-4 motos while Cody Cooper rounded out the top five with a 6-5 score. “I’m going to take every opportunity to get this (championship) and keep working hard in the gym so I can be strong in the final laps of these races,” Grant said after taking the impressive win. The deck was just stacked in the 250 class as usual. KTM rider Tommy Searle set fast time in the 250 class and was stating that he just loves this track. Another fast rider, Ryan Dungey was very hungry for a win as last year his bike exploded in the final moto on LaRocco’s Leap. Christophe Pourcel jumped out of the Ryan Dungey making the pass on Jake Weimer for the lead.

gate and was well ahead of the pack for the first hundred feet but his good start ended up in the soil of the first turn as he and about ten other bikes bit it hard on the start. Jake Weimer, fresh off his win at the last round assumed the lead with Bret Metcalfe in second and Dungey third. Dungey finally got a good start and was starting to pull in Metcalfe and got around him for second on the first lap. Weimer, in his third year of the 250 class, made a mistake after the finish line straight allowing Dungey to move into the point. Justin Barcia was on the move in the pack and finally put himself behind Tommy Searle and made a gorgeous pass before the uphill step up. Metcalfe did his best to hold of Barcia but the youngster made a huge jump on LaRocco’s Leap and finally made a pass stick for third. Barcia was whipping his Honda over every jump and just working it hard for the fans. The kid has speed. On the final lap, Dungey ripped the triple on LaRocco’s Leap for the first moto win. Following Dungey a ways back was Weimer, Barcia, Metcalfe, and Searle in fifth. that was short lived as KTM Martin Davalos moved around him before the ski jump. The moto was setting up for Pourcel and Dungey, something we haven’t seen yet this year. The craziest thing happened when Dungey was moving up the monza wall and his front tire dug in flipping his Suzuki end over end and amazingly he got up and continued with no damage. Dungey’s bike kept running and he re-entered in the fifteenth spot. Pourcel got around Davalos. Searle had a chance to get the overall but all Weimer had to do was hold onto the fourth. Pourcel, with that sneaky Frenchmen style cruised to the win, good enough for second overall via his 8-1 tallies. Weimer put another win, this time back to back for the Monster Kawasaki Pro Circuit team as he went 2-4 for the overall. Searle took the final podium spot with 5-2 scores while Metcalfe (4-3) and Dungey (1-8) rounded out the top five. “This is one of the best tracks I’ve ever ridden, I was really looking forward to this race,” said Tommy Searle. “I was really mad about the first moto and I wanted to change that for the second moto,” said Pourcel. “Everything went better in the second moto, I didn’t get my speed

until the second lap or so and it felt good to win the moto. I just wish I could’ve had a better first moto.” “I really didn’t get that good of a start in the second moto and I ended up fourth, not what I wanted but it was good enough for the overall. This last two weeks have been different being up front but I didn’t make any moves in that first moto on Dungey and I just stayed where I was,” said Weimer. Five different winners in the 450 class, maybe this class isn’t as bad as I thought it was. I just miss Ricky Carmichael. Speaking of RC, I got my fix. Carmichael was a part of the FMF 2-Stroke Invitational. RC completely destroyed the field of smokers in the three lap finale. RC did his best by whipping it over the jumps Red Bud style. Among other competitors were Jeff Stanton, Josh Woods, Kelly Smith, Todd DeHoop, and even Larry Witmer. Red Bud was a huge success, even with the mild cool weather.

he checkered flag was a familiar sight to AA class winner Matt Stavish at the Hill City Hare Scramble. Stavish was kept honest by a hard charging and relentless, wire to wire battle with Dylan Debel and Nate Ferderer. First lap action saw first year AA rider, Ferderer, lead the first lap with Stavish and Debel in striking distance. Ferderer, riding with an aggressive style put some breathing room on Stavish. Exiting the first gas stop though, Stavish had taken control of the lead. Behind Stavish the real battle took place after Ferderer lost two positions to Stavish and Debel at the gas Stop. Debel and Ferderer tested

each other for the next lap, until Debel got stuck on a nasty uphill section, allowing Ferderer to pass for second. Ferderer set his sights on the leader, but Stavish put his skills to use, as he tackled the many hills, roots and rock infested former ski hill course with relative ease. second. Ferderer soldiered on, while injured, taking third at the checkers. Ferderer, with a ice pack on his shoulder, "I was upset at my start, so I forgot about it, and passed to the front. I tried to gap Stavish, but the gas stop cost me. After Debel got stuck I was hoping to lead again until something caught me and tossed me. My shoulder stiffened up and that was it." During the C race there was a line up out in the woods of riders trying to get around a recently blown down tree. Riders were throwing their bikes on top of the tree, under it, and some tried to make a path through the dense brush surround-

ing the trail. Dave Schriener had the holeshot on his ‘83 YZ250, and was the first to get to the fallen tree, which he said he popped it right. 200C racer Kristi Grote threw her bike down and jumped over the tree and pulled it through to the other side, got back on and continued to secure her spot as the 200C winner. 250C rider Casey Hetzel is off to a great start for his second year of racing hare scrambles. Within a year he has greatly improved by practicing with confidence and riding with faster guys such as Ralph Feld, Kraig Hinkemeyer, Buddy Rudy, David Voss, Jesse Thelen, Garret Hanson and Brandon Hanson. All of that practice paid off, and earned him the overall C trophy. Mitch Watson, a 200B rider had a very smooth start on his YZ125. He ended up midpack off the line and worked his way through several guys before they got into the woods. With two hours ahead of him he took it easy on his first lap. Then by lap two Watson no longer his back brakes, and to add to the situation he ended up getting a rear flat tire. Although Watson had complications, he made sure to look on the bright side of it all by commenting on the positives of his race. “It was a bad day for me, but I guess everyone has those, but I guess just the fact that I got to ride

Twice the fun at Sugar Camp

e started the weekend with beautiful sunshine. The Sugar Camp Off Roaders were working hard to prep and put as much moisture in the ground as possible for the long weekend of racing. It has been pretty dry up north most of the summer. Luckily by mid-morning, the sun disappeared and in came the much needed rain the north woods needed. As the first set of motos progressed on Saturday the track started to firm up because of the rain, and make the jumps better. Its tough to make jumps out of moon dust, as owner Scott Schwalbe puts it. As the first set of motos finished so did the rain. 250C got the worst of the stick as the rain fell the hardest during their moto. Dustin Pulley and Ben Peterson were out front battling both A motos for the win. There was a good turnout of riders that made the Adam Reek was kicking butt all weekend.

Blake Bocek was consistent with 4-4 scores to beat out Dustin Sikorski in the top five. One of the larger classes on the day was the ever-exciting 250C class. Yamaha 125cc mounted Brandon Hoffman went 1-1 on the day. Hoffman was able to get good starts and quickly get into the lead. Seth Fuller kept Hoffman in sight and was able to distance himself from the other riders. He kept Curtis Viegut at bay in the second moto and beat him to the checkers. Fuller traded moto scores with Viegut and his 3-2 got him second overall. Nick Kubowski rode two good motos as well finishing consistent 4-4 ahead of Jesse Wergin in both motos. Super Series comes to Joliet

ith a very unforgiving weather pattern over the past two months, Justin Martino’s crew put on a yeoman’s effort to get the “outdoor” track deflooded by pumping, and hauling in dirt to try and fill in the low spots so that the riders could ride the rarely used track. Around 7pm Saturday evening, after much discussion, it was decided to run Sunday’s event on the “Supercross” track. Most of the riders agreed and were happy with the decision. The riders who left or did not show up, missed a lot of good racing. During the day’s intermission a drawing was held for items such as a pair of TCX boots, (won by Joey Zenisek), tickets to any 2010 SX event and many other items thanks to TCX and Feld Entertainment. Seventeen riders lined up for moto one of the 250C class, and when the gate dropped it was Yamaha mounted Andrew Truhlar taking the lead. Joe Ahern followed for the first couple laps aboard his Honda before finding an opening to take the lead and eventual moto win. Devin Oestreich came from fifth on his Honda to take third at the end. The second moto, had an added incentive to get the holeshot. A pair of TCX boots

to the rider with the holeshot. When the gate dropped the first turn got very crowded and Joe Ahern managed to edge out Truhlar and Suzuki rider, Chris Ruhnke for the boots. Ahern continued his good fortune by opening a three bike length lead over three riders contesting for second place. Truhlar stalled his bike giving second to Ruhnke. Yamaha rider, Kevin Schieben passed Oestreich on the last lap to secure third place. Truhlar restarted and salvaged a fifth at the checkers. Congrats to Ahern for taking the boots and the overall. The combined 250A and B class group lined up at the gate with the “A” riders going on the first drop and the “B” following a few seconds later. KTM rider, Zach Martino took the lead and win with Wayne Weyker following on a Yamaha. The drop of the gate for 250B provided some of the best racing of the day. Dillon Ramey earned a short lead by grabbing the holeshot with his Honda followed by Yamaha riders William Reader, Jacob Rakowski and Joey Suges. With the first lap completed, Matt Hammond took control while a four way fight developed for second. Reader who was running second, crashed on the second lap and retired leaving Ramey, Rakowski and Suges

to fight for second. On the third lap Ramey failed to come around with the leaders. Rakowski and Suges then put on a spirited race with numerous passes and repasses for the next two laps. On the white flag lap, Suges piloted his 125 Yamaha into second in the whoop section and looked to have second place in hand when he seemingly missed a gear on the back table top giving Rakowski a chance. As they entered the last sweeper to the finish it appeared that Suges earned second place by the height of a knobby. The scorekeepers had called a spit decision, with one thinking that Rakowski got second while the other scorekeeper had Suges in second. The referee felt that Rakowski got second, with Suges relegated to third. The final moto, Hammond gated perfectly and rode off to the win and the overall. Reader put in a great ride to take second. Rakowski crossed the line in third giving him second overall. Mitch Swanson was awarded third overall based on his 4-4 finishes while Suges who gated poorly, missed the podium by one spot, taking fifth and fourth overall for the day. ade (â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Wild Wadeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;) Schultz had a great day at the Rock River Riders hill climb near Polo, Illinois. Schultz claimed two class wins and the top two fastest times of the day. In the 600cc class Schultz set the fastest time to that point of the day with a 3.370 second first round effort, then beat it himself in the second round with a 3.087 second time for the win. Andy Fortner was his closest challenger with a 3.173 second time with Matt Peters third in 3.265 seconds. In Open class action, Schultz took the first round lead on his big bore Suzuki with a 3.533 second run, which Lloyd Haas beat in the second round. But Schultz really let the big four banger loose on his response, flying it over the top in a sizzling 2.970 seconds for the win, the fastest time of the day and the only sub 3 second run of the day. R.J. Watson claimed third on his FJ1200 based climber. Haas still had a good day, however. Riding another 750cc Kaw triple to the win in the 750cc class, he had to come from behind, as Schultz posted the fastest ride in the first

round, 3.836 seconds. In the second round, Fortner delivered a very fast 3.181 second run to slip under Schultz, and Haas flew his bike over in 3.180 seconds, taking the win from Fortner by the slimmest of margins. Fortner had to settle for a pair of seconds and Schultz added a third to go with his two wins. In youth class action, Chase Banning took the win in the 50cc class with a 56 foot effort on his KTM with Levi Peters second on his KTM. Tori Daniels climbed 43 feet on her KX65 for the 65cc win with Andrew Fortner second. Eathen BartenBack edged D.J. Watson by a single foot to win the 85Jr class, his 110 foot climb the best effort of all the youth riders. Dan Winberg took the 85Sr win with a 54 foot climb.

ound five of the Megacross Shootout Series logged 320 entrants for another solid turnout. Roy Horton topped the stacked A classes after battling with Travis Sewell, Derek Whitney, and a hay bale cover in two exciting main events. Other double class winners were Colin Licastro in 14-25 and 250B, Jason Kloptowsky in +25A and +30A, Cory Catalani in Supermini and 125cc, and Seth Kuss in 250C and Open C. Sewell grabbed the holeshot in the eighteen-rider 250A class, with Whitney, Andrew Tyrrell, James Garrett, and Horton in the hunt. Garrett moved into the third spot early in the race, with Horton closing in. The race unfolded during an action packed third lap. First, Horton charged past Garrett for third, then he caught Whitney. Whitney went inside, but Horton railed a rut in the middle to pass for second. Whitney took the position back a few turns later, only for Horton to answer back with an inside line pass after the whoops, and securing the deal with a fist pump over the step-up. Sewell, who was just in front of the action, stalled his bike in a tight turn as he was completing lap three. Horton took over the lead. The new running order on lap four was Horton, Whitney, Garrett, Daniel Sanders, and Sewell. On the seventh and final lap, Sewell tried to go inside on Sanders in a big bowl turn, but took out Sandersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; front tire. Both riders went down, moving Justin Kelly and Jonathan Six into the top five. In Open A, Sewell led the thirteen-rider field through the first turns, chased by Horton, Whitney, Dylan Martin, and Sanders. On the beginning of lap two, Horton worked the inside lines to pass Sewell for the lead. Whitney also caught up Sewell, as they went barto-bar over the big double, and rubbing some plastic through the next berm. Horton, Whitney, and Sewell stayed close, chased by Garrett, Martin, and Kelly. On lap three, leader Horton grabbed a hay bale cover with his rear tire, which wrapped around the brake side of his rear wheel. It was the Megacross version of Josh Grant going for his first win at Anaheim 1, with smoke coming from Hortonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rear tire as he continued to charge to the checkered flag. His bike held on, with Horton celebrating over the jumps as he took the win. Whitney edged out Sewell for second, with Garrett and Martin rounding out the top five. 22

Collin Licastro grabbed the holeshot in the 14-24 class. On the first lap Tyler Knowleton, Jody Walker, Stephen Stocklen, and Reid Janson were running top five. Licastro ran away with the win, while Kyle Entwistle was on a mission, coming from back in the pack to finish second across the checkered flag. Knowleton, Stocklen, and Janson wrapped up the top five. In 250B, Licastro led the 12-rider field around the first turn, followed by Erik Utech and Stocklen. Entwistle had another bad start, but climbed into the top five by lap two. Licastro checked out, with Utech holding onto second, while there was a four-way battle for third, between Stocklen, Allen Marugg, Entwistle, and Denny Morsch. On the final lap, Entwistle secured the third spot, followed by Morsch, Stocklen, and Marugg across the finish. Tyler Evensen grabbed the 50Sr holeshot trailed by Nick Harris and Shawn Thompson. On the first lap, Thompson took over the lead, chased by Evensen, Harris and Shane Reilly. Robert Copenharve was on the move, as

reeled in several riders to take the lead midrace. Copenharve collected the win, with Thompson, Evensen, Harris, and Reilly completing the top five. Chase Sexton led wire-to-wire in the twelve-rider 65 Junior class. After starting second drop behind the 65 Senior class, Sexton sliced through the pack to finish first out of the combined classes as well. Anthony Wallace carded the 65 Junior runner-up spot, followed by Dylan Boyd, Copenharve, and Jarred Berggren. In 65 Sr, Danielle Grigoletti was the early leader, trailed by Nicholas Lorenz, RJ Mackenzie, and Vinny Cragin. Lorenz took over the lead mid-race, and stayed out front to the checkers. Grigoletti secured the second spot, followed by Mackenzie, Keagan Cook, and Jackson Jeffery, who charged through the pack after a bad start. Burton Lavens grabbed the +30A holeshot chased by Jason Kloptowsky and Joe Roberts. Lavens led the opening laps, but had problems on lap two, while Kloptowsky and Everett Dalhberg took over the top two spots.

Kloptowsky sprinted to the checkers, while Lavens reeled in Dahlberg for second. Chad Stanko and Steve Perkins wrapped up the top five. Kloptowsky led from start-tofinish for another win over the +25A class. New +25 rider Brian White and Lavens trailed Kloptowsky on the first lap. Kloptowsky aired it out over the big double, while Lavens stayed on White’s rear fender. On lap three, Lavens went inside on White through a berm turn, and they sailed bar-to-bar through the three tabletop section. Lavens took White high in the bowl turn at the end of the straightaway, making a textbook pass into second. The +30B had a packed gate with sixteen riders. Troy Quest and Ryan Moss were side-by-side through the second turn, but Quest and Jeffery Evensen tangled on the inside, with both riders going down. 65cc riders Jarred Berggren (99), Moss escaped and opened up a Chase Sexton (486), and Nicholas Lorenz. quick lead, trailed by Shawn Christen, Scott Siebert, JR Zollers, and Siebert on the final lap, but couldn’t make a Brian Goodin on the first lap. Behind Moss, pass and had to settle for fourth, followed by there were tons of position changes, with Zollers and Christen. Siebert and Goodin moving into the top three Jordan Mackiewicz led the 85 Senior mid-race. Moss checked out for a huge win, class in the start, chased by Logan Skaggs and while Goodin reeled in Siebert for second. Joey Fortune. Skaggs railed the inside Quest charged through the pack to catch through a turn to take over the lead on the first lap, but Mackiewicz took it right back. Skaggs then made a mistake, allowing Tyler

fourth spot, trading positions several times during the race. Roper never looked back on the way to the checkered flag, and Shelby Miller and Whitney Miller held onto the final podium spots as well. Kenyon edged out Keith for fourth, after a couple of passes back and forth on the final lap. Dean Holmstrom proved that he could win in the Thumper class with or without a seat. In the heat race, Holmstrom lost his seat early in the race, but kept charging to take the win over John Conley and AJ Waggoner. In the main event, Holmstrom kept both his seat and the lead the whole race. Conley stayed close to Holmstrom, and made a last lap attempt for the win, but crashed in the final set of whoops, handing the second sport to Waggoner. Conley remounted for third, and Dylan Broll caught reeled in his brother Nicholas Broll to wrap up the top five. Tuma Sweeps Jordan SX Jordan, Minnesota - June 26 By Jamie Theis

he sun was intense and the wind was strong for the 228 entrants at the Jordan Supercross on June 26th. Finally, Motokazie would have a race with no dark clouds, no threat of storms, and the summer weather perfect for Friday night Supercross in Minnesota. Jade Dungey of Belle Plaine, MN, raced in the Pro class; and helped set a blistering pace against Trevor Tuma of Londsdale. These two battled back and forth all night; but the real drama was found with the younger pro riders. With their hearts on their sleeves, the two 16 year old racers Joe Perron of Elko and Michael Riehm from Annandale raced with passion. In the heat race Perron stole the thunder and the holeshot from Tuma and Dungey. The Jordan Supercross track begins with at 200’ start straight-away that ends in a 180 degree right hand turn, then an easy left hand corner which leads into a 100 yard whoops section. Perron was wide open thru the whoops, flying right over the tops, with Tuma and Dungey breathing down his neck. The youngster was able to hold on to the lead for the first lap, scrubbing the 80’ triple, up and over the tunnel jump just before the finish line. By the second lap however, the older and more experienced Tuma squeezed past to take the lead, setting the scene for the Main Event. At the checkered it was Tuma, Perron, Dungey, Riehm and Jeremy Hullet of Northfield, MN. The nine pro riders lined up for the Main Event, just after the sun set. The engines were hot and the crowd was hyped, anticipating a very exciting race. Again, the excitement wasn’t between first and second place as everyone expected; but rather the third and fourth place spots. The Pros were racing for a 150% purse, so every position counted. In the first lap it was Tuma who took the holeshot followed thru the whoops by Dungey, Riehm, Perron and Hullet. Riehm and Perron were neck and neck during the six laps, racing hard for that third place finish. In the third lap Perron passed Riehm over the

catapult jump, and it looked like he was going to take the third place position. Unfortunately, Perron washed out in a soft corner and went down. Riehm was close enough to ride past and take back that third place finish. Tuma and Dungey were several seconds ahead of the pack, creating their own battle for first. Tuma’s strength and smooth style kept him ahead of Dungey for the win. The Main Event finishes were Tuma, Dungey, Riehm, Perron and Hullet. At the opposite end of the speed spectrum was the 50cc riders. A total of eighteen 50cc Oil Injected riders turned out for the race. They ranged in ages from 4 to 8 years old, making them by far the cutest racers at the track. Six year-old Gavin Tilford of Pine Island, MN, was carrying on the Tilford family tradition, by leading both the heat and main event. His father has been racing at the Jordan Supercross track since it started in 1997. Bringing up the back of the pack, on the electric motorcycles, was five year-old Noah Miesen of St.Paul, MN, and four yearold Carsen Sparks, Belle Plaine, MN. Noah was doing a little showboating for the crowd during his race by sticking his heels out over every jump he rolled. This was Carsen’s first Supercross race; and he’s already a crowd favorite. The finish order was the same for both the heat and main event, Tilford, Jay Hantge, Seth Valento, Alexander Riley, and Austin Kristiansen. Aztalan hits Summer in Stride Lake Mills, Wisconsin - July 12 By Dave Hollub

ztalan Cycle Club is determined to keep its stature as the top District 16 track, and as part of the effort the track crew is putting in many extra work days to prep the track each month. The effort is paying off as riders are seeing improvements in the soil and obstacles each race. This month the crew also put in extra time getting the track in race ready condition for another Saturday open practice, and about 150 riders showed up to hone their skills before racing on Sunday. Sunday morning brought a newly prepped track and the 540 entrants were ready to head out and start turning some fast laps. The Peewee classes were first to go, and taking the second gate drop of the day DJ Gritzmacher led the 50Jr class onto the track. Kane Harpster and Braden Warner were chasing Gritzmacher hard. Gritzmacher had problems in the barn section and by the time he rounded the finish area he was in sixth, but everyone could see he wasn’t going to stay there. James Schmeling had battled his way into the lead but Harpster took over just before the scoring tower. By midway through lap two Warner was solidly into second with Schmeling running third. On lap four, Harpster went down just before the scoring tower and Warner quickly jumped out into the lead and held on to the checkers. Meanwhile a determined Gritzmacher was cutting his way through the class and at the checkers had worked his way to second. In moto two Gritzmacher again grabbed the holeshot with Harpster and Warner right behind. The running order held all moto and in the end it was Gritzmacher (2/1) grabbing the overall. Warner took second and Harpster finished up the podium with a 4/3 day. I caught up with Warner later in the day and he told me “The racing was good. The track was pretty rough and there were a lot of bikes down today. I had to get around a rider that fell in the first moto to get the lead.” He also 28

The moto one 125Jr. holeshot went to Tylor Skodras as Brandon Pope was setting himself up. As everyone hit the plateau on lap one Cody Fredrick close behind in third. In the barn section Pope made his move and grabbed the lead while Fredrick left an opening for Jake Burbach to steal away third. The top three for moto one were Pope, Skodras, and Burbach. Pope took the moto two holeshot with Skodras less than a bike length back. On the first pass over the plateau the front three were all airborne at the same time with Burbach now sitting in third. In the East end Skodras went down and Jeremy Kuhn slipped into third with Fredrick right behind him. It looked like Burbach was gaining ground until he went down hard ending his day. Pope now had breathing room and cruised to the finish. In their battle for second Kuhn and Fredrick now had Andy Kost challenging and as they went past the start straight to begin lap four they were separated by just a few bike lengths. Fredrick fell victim to a mechanical issue in the final charge for the finish and dropped back while Kost was able to tie up a solid third place finish for himself. Pope (1/1) Betty and Al Beyer celebrated 50 years together at the track as usual.

The gate dropped and Kevin Niles grabbed the holeshot with Kevin Rammer right on his rear wheel. As they came around and hit the plateau on lap one it was Niles in the lead with Bill Hernke on him and Kevin Rammer running third. In the sand by the barn Kevin Rammer got by Hernke and started to chase Niles. By the end of lap two Kevin dropped back to do battle with his dad over fifth place. Ryan Kasch moved up into third and stayed there to the finish while Niles took the win. In moto two Brian Rammer was

sidelined when he couldn’t get his CR500 fired so Kevin Rammer set out to battle with Niles for the moto win. Niles again grabbed the holeshot, but Rammer was in position looking for any opening to take the lead away. Kasch was running third with constant pressure from Trent Berglund until lap three in the west end Berglund was able to make the pass. Niles and Rammer were battling hard and their second trip over the plateau it was Rammer out front. Niles pushed hard and on the next trip over Niles took the lead by jumping over Rammer. Niles held the lead to the finish and sealed the overall win with a 1/1 finish. Kevin Rammer (5/1) took the second overall and Kasch (3/4) finished off the top three.

By the time lap one was over the top three were Bottolfson, Busse, and Jason Warner with John Stewart coming on strong in fourth. While the front three cruised to the finish, a battle developed for fourth as Stewart soon had Chris Barriere and Matt Albrecht looking for a chance to move up. On lap three they both found the opening as Barriere moved into fourth and Albrecht took over fifth. The running order held to the finish.

ished the day second and Stewart (6/3) was on the final podium step. Sportsman B/C is one of the biggest classes each race and this week it there was fifty-one entries as Jacob Luginbuhl led the first split around the holeshot. Justin Broberg was quick to move into the lead by the beginning of lap two with Brandon Pope close behind. Brennen Marshall was holding third despite being pushed by Luginbuhl. By lap three Pope had pulled up to the rear tire of Broberg, and looked like he might be setting up a pass but Broberg held him off to take the moto win. William LaFon made his way past Luginbuhl late in the moto to grab a fourth place finish. In moto two it was Steven Ceithamer first out of the start straight and as the class jumped the plateau on lap one he was still holding the lead in front of Broberg and LaFon. While LaFon had his hands full fighting off Pope, Broberg was pushing for the lead. It looked like Broberg was sticking a wheel in at almost every corner and the next two trips over the plateau he and Ceithamer were both bar to bar mid air. As the white flag flew Pope finally made his way past LaFon and was reeling in the leaders. As the top three went past the start straight it looked as though any of them could take the lead to the finish. Broberg found a gap in Ceithamerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s riding and made the pass for the lead in the west sand section. Broberg (1/1) took a hard fought overall with Pope (2/2) second and Ceithamer (5/3). 250A moto one was Joey Dretzkaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s from the start as he grabbed the holeshot in front of Cesar Vega then held on to the finish. into second but just didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have enough laps to close in on Dretzka. A running battle developed over third place between Jamie Baake, Jacob Oldenburg, and Sam Long. From the beginning of lap three until the white flag came out all three were within striking distance with Long eventually pushing through into fourth on lap four. Long was able to take over third on the final lap and held on to the checkers. Brian Antoniak was first to round the holeshot in moto two with Long sliding in right alongside. Menzer took charge before the pack reached the plateau but Dretzka was pulling him in fast. By the time they got the green flag at the scoring tower Dretzka was out front and despite pressure from Menzer he held the lead to the finish. Long was riding fast and smooth looking to be in control of third place until he blew his motor on lap four. Antoniak quickly charged past and held off a hard running Eric Hollub to secure third place at the checkers. Dretzka won the overall with his 1/1 finishes while Menzer (2/2) took second and Antoniak (6/3) grabbed third. Thanks to the overcast weather, the track stayed in great shape all day and the racing was fast and furious. Congratulations are also in order for the head of the Aztalan watering crew Al Beyer and his wife Betty as they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at the track in the same manner they have since Aztalan opened over thirty years ago. Hawkeye Downs Racing on fire Cedar Rapids, Iowa - June 27 Round 6 By Michael Sierens

onight marked a point of being just past the halfway point in the Hawkeye Downs series as the riders get ready for the sixth round. Summer has finally arrived as the 90+ temperatures and windy conditions kept the track crew on their toes throughout the night. The racing surface was hard and dry and gave the riders fits trying to find traction. 14-24A. Jeremy Kress rocketed off the gate and towards turn one looking to lead the 14-24A class riders, but he was just edged out by Kyle Sandlin on his Honda. Kress wasted no time in getting around Sandlin in the second turn and tried to distance himself from the 14-rider pack. Behind Kress was Ryan Simonton, Sandlin and Nathan Kimball sitting in fourth on the opening lap. Kress was able to create a sizeable lead by the end of lap two, but the race behind him was heating up. Kimball moved into third with a pass around San-

dlin. Tyler Duncan, in his first appearance to Hawkeye Downs in 2009 knows the track well as he was a regular here for the last few seasons. Duncan rode to within a bike length through the whoops and made the pass for fourth place on the final lap. Taking home the win with style was Jeremy Kress with Simonton and Kimball rounding out second and third. 14-24B/C always brings two things to an event, a full gate and tons of excitement. Twentyfour riders left the gate thundering to the first turn in a cloud of dust. Dallas Devinney emerged with the holeshot with Andy Ney just behind. Bryce

Craig on his Suzuki made some quick moves on the first few corners and moved into third place. Craig got a run through the whoops on lap two and made the pass into second dropping Ney back to third. Devinney had his head down trying to put in some fast laps to get, but Craig was able to run him down and make the pass on in the third lap. Devinney never gave up over the next two laps and stuck to Craigâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rear wheel the entire time, but wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to find the 34

speed to make the pass back into the lead. Ney finished a strong, but distant third. Jamie Bennett grabbed the holeshot in the +30A class and gave a wicked look back to Todd Walton and the rest of the pack in the process. Smiling from ear-to-ear was Bennett as he was able to beat Walton into the first turn. Walton stayed within striking distance and on lap two tried to make his move. Both riders chose the outside line heading through the infield section and they bumped, and then continued on. The battle for the lead came to a screeching halt on lap four when Bennett lost the front end heading into the infield giving the race to Walton. Troy Pflughaupt on his Suzuki grabbed the holeshot in +30B just edging out holeshot artist Nikki Weis. Jason Goss quickly moved around both Pflughaupt and Weis on the opening lap to take the lead. Goss was able to checkout on the field on the next two laps putting the race on the track for second place where Matt Morris was trying to find a way around Pflughaupt. Goss took his third main event win of the season. Morris was able to find his way into second place and the early leader Pflughaupt took home third. A strong field of 50Sr riders took the gate drop as seventeen motored towards the

Cooper, Hayes, and Blake Hoag were side by side banging bars. Cooper showed his strength as he jumped the step-up jump exiting the infield section and leaped into fourth place. Cooper fell victim to the whoops again as he was passed again by Hoag for fourth. The battle for third place was won by Hayes with Hoag and Cooper taking home fourth and fifth. he third round of the Stoney Lonesome Championship Series was held at the club grounds. All three of the series races have been plagued with rain leading up to the events resulting in slick conditions. Once again, riders found themselves facing another rain soaked southern Indiana Hare Scramble. The PeeWee event was started with sixteen riders heading into the well marked course. Langdon Feltner continued his dominance in the Pre-mix class. Sam Hall rode hard landing second place and finishing on the lead lap. Jacob Stark charged into the track looking to win the Injector class as he has in the first three rounds. Stark not only won the class, he finished fourth place in the PeeWee overall trailing Caleb Hancock by 0:08. The mini course provided the riders with a mix of wide open ridge trails and tight, switch-back single track. Clay Sullivan led every lap but one in the Super Mini class. Fortunately, Sullivan was able to lead the last lap. In the 85cc class, Luke Chilman and Keagen Lee swapped back and forth before Lee captured and maintained the lead on lap four.

Taylor Day was closing in on Chilman but fell short of second place by 0:33. Michael Witkowski continued his unbeaten streak in D15 65cc competition with a smooth and consistent performance. Eric Douglass once again fell one lap shy of Witkowski, but held off the rest of the charging field for second place. John Henry Robinson ran strong for the entire hour, ending just short of Vincent Smith who landed the third place position. The big bike race found seventy-two riders heading into the woods, all fighting for a class victory. Of those, five riders eventually finished six laps with

twenty-four completing at least five. The scoring team did well, logging 275 scans during the hour and a half race. Lap one saw Jordan Johns take control of the race, turning a 15:46 lap time, followed by Jeff Cregg, Nathan Sullivan, John Robbins and Chris Jewel. Lap two concluded with Johns still on the gas and maintaining his lead. Robbins had moved into second with Cregg dropping into third place ahead of Sullivan. Jewell was already feeling the length of the race, but blew through the chutes in the number five spot - looking for that second wind. Lap three had Jeff Cregg taking over the lead, followed by Robbins. Johns and Sullivan held the third and fourth place position while Andy Cregg moved into fifth. Unfortunately, Andy Cregg appeared to sustain a major engine failure ending his hopes of winning the Vet A class, clearing the way for Brandon Freeman to claim the class win. the fifth lap with Jeff Cregg still in the lead, followed 2:42 later by Robbins. Cregg kept the lead at the end of lap 6 landing the Heavy A and Overall victory for the fourth consecutive race at Stoney. Sullivan refused to give an inch and rallied on the last lap coming through the gates in second with Robbins, Johns and Duell Murphy filled out the remaining top five spots.

Hansen leads minis under lights Buchanan Michigan - July 3 By Bart Newman

acing under the lights in front of a big crowd at RedBud MX’s annual night races always brings out the youth class riders in droves and this year was no different. Cobra mounted Jett Janowski took the 50Sr. class by storm, fittingly on a night sponsored by Michigan’s own Cobra Manufacturing. Meanwhile, in the 65Jr. class it was Blake Hansen making a quick trip over from Wisconsin worthwhile grabbing a second moto victory over Mikey Benedict to win the night’s 65Jr. overall. In the “Cobra Stars of Tomorrow” 50Sr. moto one, Janowski timed the starter’s cadence to the tee to lead the 29rider field round turn one. Janowski was hard on the throttle and soon began to walk away from the competition. Luke Thyret gave chase, but Janowski was on the gas and not to be denied. The battle over third was back and forth as Tyler Collins, Daemien Vaughn and Lucas Filips went to war. At the checkered flag it was Janowski out front and as Thyret followed home in the runner-up spot. Fillips found a couple of good lines and used the lapped traffic to his advantage to grab third while Vaughn and Collins rounded out the top five. In moto two Janowski (11) didn’t get the best jump off the line, but exited the first turn with the lead and put in a near perfect ride to seal the deal and win the night’s overall. Thyret charged all moto and crossed the line in the runner-up spot for the second time in two tries. Hansen (6-3) was hoping to reenact his 65Jr. success in the 50Sr. class, but a tough first moto and a less than ideal start in moto two relegated him to third in moto two which mirrored his overall. Hansen was also a player in the 65Jr. class. In moto one, like the rest of the 16-rider field, he followed Alex Ransom who has been tearing up GLMX tracks and showing why he has a gate at Loretta’s dude ranch. Ransom took the first moto win but a DNF in moto two dropped him to tenth overall. Hansen was the man in moto two, leading the way around the track under the lights 38 CYCLE USA, August 2009

alley Raceway in Crystal Falls, Upper Michigan is truly a motocross gem. With its rolling valleys and thick sand, this is one of District 16’s finest motocross tracks. The Uren family worked non-stop throughout the weekend to prepare the track for the racers and spectators. Uren suffered a deep gash behind his knee but remounted in the back of the pack. Fast man Dustin Pulley had snuck to the inside of the melee and into the lead. Eric Palosaari tried to hang with Pulley early before John Vandezande busted past Palosaari by the halfway point. Pulley checked out to win with Vandezande in second as Jake Zeugner charged his way into

third on his Suzuki. “Well, the start went pretty good for me, not for Eric or Sam. I got a good jump but I’m on a 250 and everyone else is on a 450, so they motored me to the corner first, and then I saw Eric wash out and I just hung to the inside and stayed away from the carnage and went away with the win,” said Pulley. In the second moto, Palosaari jumped out to the early lead aboard his KTM with Vandezande in second while Pulley slipped into the fourth spot. It looked like Palosaari would walk away from the field but Vandezande pulled alongside and made the pass for the lead in the second lap. Pulley then moved into the second spot and set his sights on the leader, but the deep sand got the best of him as they headed up the hill before the plateau. Vandezande hung on for the win, a big upset indeed as Pulley has been winning quite a few races as of late. Vandezande grabbed the overall while Pulley went 1-2 for second and Jake Zeugner rode to consistent finishes of 3-3 for third. Vandezande, “I got a fourth place start and worked my way through into the lead, but I knew Pulley was right there waiting for me and I just tried to hold him off. It came down to the last corner as I went inside and he went outside and I carried enough momentum to beat him to the checkers.”

“I didn’t get the start I wanted, it took me a while to get going around some riders and then on the third lap I got into second and John was way ahead of me. I tried to get a run on him but I hit my toe in the sand and it sent me off the bike doing a seated nac-nac. It was a great moto and we had a lot of fun and hats off to John for the win,” said a very appreciative Pulley. Pulley came back strong in the 250A class as he went 1-1 for the overall. Jake Zeugner ended up in second while Sam Long went 3-3 for third. In Sportsmen B/C it was Chris Barribeau getting the nod in the first moto as he passed the thumper of Travis Tabalske who held the lead for two laps. Barribeau got into the lead as Tabalske fell back to fifth. “I started out right next to the box, I was close to getting the holeshot but I ended up second. I caught a lot of sand off of Tabalske’s 450 before I got around him and took the win,” said Barribeau. In the second moto, Barribeau had to contend with Cody Warren as he was beat by the great starts of Warren. The two Suzuki riders battled it out in the second moto but it was Warren getting the win, but the overall went to Barribeau with 1-2 tallies while Warren went 4-1 for second. Another Suzuki rider, Shawn Zeugner took third with his 2-3 scores.

In 250B action, it was Cody Warren off to another fine start. Chris Barribeau got around him on the first lap. Thirteen yearold Adam Reek set his sights on Warren and within a lap he was hunting down the leader Barribeau. Reek made the pass for lead to take the opening moto win. “I lined up on the outside and I was fourth out of the gate and then I saw Chris Barribeau and I just tried my hardest and finally got into the lead and took the win,” said Reek. Marshall Maas took the second moto holeshot just ahead of Warren as Reek got pushed out in one of the corners. Warren got around Maas and then Reek moved into second by the woods. Soon after, Reek took over the lead and went on for the win and the overall with back to back moto wins. Warren wound up in second with 4-2 tallies as Mass garnished third with 3-3 scores. In Quad A action, it was the #38 machine of Dan Woodruff getting the holeshot, but he was overtaken by Jimmy O’Dovero. From there O’Dovero went on to

the win and eventual class overall with his 1-2 tallies while Woodruff went 3-1 for second. Brief heavy rains came through with about seven motos left on the day, a welcoming rain at that as you know when there is sand, there’s a need for water. It briefly stopped racing action and left the track in primo racing conditions as it rounded out a great day of racing for all Sunday Action: Tim Palosaari pulled a nice holeshot in 250B first moto and led the fierce pack into the back section with Shawn Zeugner breathing down his back. Palosaari held on long enough and a medic flag kept Zeugner in check for the final lap as Palosaari took the opening moto win. Adam Reek had went off the track in the early laps and had to fight his way into the fifth spot by the end of the moto. “I started just to the right hand side of the box and I just kept the lead as hard as I could through the first corner and then I saw Zeugner coming and I just held him off at the final corner to get the win,” said Palosaari of his

opening moto win. The second moto had Reek pounding out some hard laps to get the win ahead of Cody Warren. Reek finished the race fourth overall while Zeugner ran consistent 2-3 scores to beat out Warren for the overall with 4-2 tallies. Palosaari went 1-5 for third overall. Casey Collegron was on fire in the opening moto of 250C on his Kawasaki. Collegron held off a charging Mike Ziebert, also on a Kawasaki. Collegron had troubles in the second moto posting a DNF. Meanwhile Ziebert pushed hard but could only muster a third place finish and second overall via his 2-3 postings as Kyle Koosman took the overall win with 3-1 finishes. “I got a third place start and then the lead over the uphill triple. Mike Ziebert was right on me and I thought he would’ve made a pass,” said Collegron. “I was battling for the lead as Casey Collegron was ahead of me, and I started to catch him but I got tired and he took the win. It sure was fun out there, and I’m pretty happy the way it ended up today,” said Ziebert. Ziebert had a great weekend as on Saturday he won the 250C class and took second on Sunday. fter a week of camp and school for many racers they were eager to show off their new skills. The FCA plays a major part in this event, Todd Smith and Jim Feagans often conduct church services at the riders meetings along with the CBMX. One rider putting on his own school was Owen Motorsports/ Suzuki rider Jace Owen. Saying Owen swept his classes would be an understatement. Today he was holding a big broom and wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afraid to use it. In the 85Sr class Owen took both motos and the overall. In the first moto Brady Neys took second with Jacob Smothers third. In the second moto Smothers powered his Kawasaki to second for the moto and overall. Neys finished third. In the Super Mini class things were chaos in the first moto as Owen took the win with Kawasaki riders Nate Mcleese second and Jacob Smothers third. In the second moto Owen took the win and overall ahead of Brady Neys and Nicholas Hancher. Owen swept another taking the overall, Hancher finished second overall and Kawasaki rider Brayden Copeland finished third overall with a 5-4 moto score. In the SchoolBoy class Owen unleashed with another double moto win. Nate Mcleese finished second both motos and overall ahead of Gabriel Petri. There are a lot of fast riders, and there are a lot of good teachers... being both is harder than you may think. In my opinion Kawasaki rider James Povolny is hands down the best MX teacher I have seen. After working with the kids and adults all week it was time for James to try to collect some of the Kawasaki money on hand as well as show the students what he was talking about. When James came out of the back of his truck he may as well have been holding a huge broom of his own. Five classes and ten motos! In the Open A class Povolny won both motos with Christopher Akaydin second and Honda rider Ryan Tracy third. In + 25 Povolny swept both motos and the overall over ESPY Kawasaki rider David Espinoza. Third went Honda rider Ryan Tracy. In the 250A class Povolny again won both motos as Anthony Krivi finished second overall with KTM rider and fellow teacher Paden Feagans third with a great 46

t takes more than Summer storms to douse the enthusiasm of the Midwest VMX racers. As track owner and Midwest VMX board member Craig Maasdam was preparing the Moto-X Raceway in Sully, a storm dropped two inches of rain in less than 45 minutes. This was a cause for some concern as the race was scheduled the next morning, and those arriving at the track Friday evening were getting stuck as they pulled in. District 16 visits the Bunkhouse

n Saturday, May 30th, District 16 flat trackers traveled to Merrillan, WI to the Bunkhouse. The race was held during the day because of the lack of lighting at night. Friday night, we were brought rain. This made the pits muddy, but the track was worked in very well. It turned out to be very smooth and fast, and we had to water the track quite often to keep all the dust down. In all, the track held up that day and also on Sunday for the TT. What an excitement it was for the 85cc class. These riders kept up in a pack the first couple of laps. Battling for the second and third spots were Parker Lange and Alec Muth while Andrew Schleicher was out front. The excitement of the battle over second wasn’t enough for Lange and he decided to now start a combat with the leader Schleicher. Keeping up close with Schleicher until the end wasn't enough. Try as he did, Lange gave it his all but Schleicher kept the lead to the finish. The 250cc class was a great show kicked-off with the holeshot by #01 Ian Steen, holding the lead all the way. There was a battle for the second between Alexia Hoffmann and Jesse Walton. Hoffmann held Walton off

the whole race, fighting hard to finish second. The Open Am class was exciting with many contenders to watch. The top three riders seemed to keep up with the pack, but eventually the leader, #91 Michael Carlton started to pull away. The other riders rode hard as #71 Robbie Trienen and Ian Steen gave chase. New Promotor, Track at Little Falls Little Falls, Minnesota - June 28 By S. Anderson

ittle Falls Raceway has a new promoter, Dale and Sharon Kadlec. With new owners came a new, and a freshly designed track for the 2009 season. A good turnout of quad riders came to not only try the new track, but to also show their support to the Kadlec’s for opening up another track that they operate for the quad riders. As was expected, the track was awesome. Thank you for a great day of racing as always when you hold a quad event. Jenna Hagemann, Logan Radunz, and Christopher Leaym gave the crowd some great racing at Little Falls Raceway in both motos. The battle between the three started from the time the gates dropped in moto one through the checkered flag in moto two. Hagemann was successful in capturing the win today for the 50cc stock class with Radunz and Leaym following respectively. The 450A class also turned up the heat and gave the crowd some action packed racing. Moto one was awarded to Mark Olejnichak, while Kyle Ryman placed second and Daren Lee third. filled as the tables turned with Ryman taking the win, Lee placing second and third going to Olejnichak. The outcome of the two motos resulted in Ryman being awarded the first place overall. For the 90cc stock class, it was Luke Radunz that prevailed today with two first place finishes. Gavin Rowland finished consistently second with Scott Korwes third. The newest addition to the quad series is the introduction of the Redline Buggies, a UTV class. These buggies are amazing to watch. Although a little front heavy, the drivers seem to really put on a great race and the spectators always enjoy watching in anticipation of what might happen. Congratulations to Justin Esser for taking the win. The Women’s class was quite a bit smaller than normal today but none the less, it was still a heated class to watch. Jollienne Mrozek and Danielle Radunz fought it out for first place with Mrozek being able to hold off Radunz in moto one. Haas hands it to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;em at Spring Creek Millville, Minnesota - June 21 By Rolfe Otterness

randon Haas put on a great display of moto skill as he took the 250A overall win at round 5 of the Spring Creek Super Series. This was especially impressive considering the very tough competitors on hand including Alex Martin, returned home for a off weekend on the national circuit, Snowcross-champ Tucker Hibbert and Iowaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gavin Faith. The 250A class was one of only a handful that completed the day with two full motos as once again rain interfered with the schedule and sent everyone packing early. Early in the day, the 65cc 7-9 class hit the track when it was in pristine condition, and Noah Mcpherson jumped out to take the early lead.

Mcpherson seemed to have a bit of an edge over his competition and started to stretch out a gap over second place Alex Ingalls as the race continued. Bailey Kroone and Michael J. Quinn (no relation to the other two Mike Quinns) kept him honest to the checkered. Moto two started with just a light misty rain beginning to fall. McPherson took it in stride and went in for another solid win after taking over from holeshot master Brandon Moore. Ingalls reiterated his claim to second place and held off Moore at the flag by a few bike lengths. Kroone and Quinn rounded out the top five. Benjamin Anderson came out charging in the first moto of the 85 912 class only to hand the lead to

master is in the making. Adam Maxfield DNF’ed the first moto but ran quite well in the mud to take second after getting by Anderson on lap two. The next three across the finish line were Grant Hecht, Schnagl and Anderson who slithered in as the track was getting pretty snarly. Gavin Faith took the win in the first and only moto of the 450/ Open class with a pretty good challenge from Dalton Carlson. Apparently the 450s pulled these guys up the hills with a bit more alacrity than the smaller bikes as Hibbert, Martin and Haas rounded out the top five on their two-fifties. They had a good dice over third though. Haas shot to the early lead in moto one of the 250 class, his two-stroke proving an edge on the start. Gavin Faith and Jamie Ledin ran 2-3 for the first two laps while Martin moved up after a flubbed start. Martin finally got by Ledin on lap three but it took until the last lap before he could finally get by Faith as he zapped him on the downhill. Haas had enough of a lead to hang on for the win, although Martin closed to within a few bike lengths by the checkered. Haas once again jumped to the front in moto two with Martin, Faith and Hibbert in tow. On lap two Hibbert got by Faith and the three riders out front put on a good show as they sped ahead of the pack. Haas held steady for the duration with Martin and Hibbert just seconds back for almost the entire moto.

Annual Kewaskum Hill Climb Kewaskum, Wisconsin - June 21 Kettle Moraine Sport Riders

ave you ever driven past a golf course and thought about how cool it would be to rip it up on your dirt bike. The fresh sod, sand bunkers, they are just calling you right? How about driving past a ski hill, and envisioned yourself climbing it... of course you have, its only natural. If you’re a hill climber, that’s more than a passing thought, its what you look forward to all year long. Father’s Day Sunday brings a special opportunity like this to the central part of eastern Wisconsin, courtesy of the Kettle Moraine Sport Riders. The small town of Kewaskum has a ski hill called Sunburst, and once a summer, during what would be a dormant time for the hill, it comes alive with motorcycles. A limited class affair that draws a couple thousand spectators, and some of the area’s fastest climbers. Its a great show that starts late morning, and concludes with a special King of the Hill contest for the fastest of the fast just several hours later in the afternoon. The hill has two good sized jumps just off the start, then a semi rough climb to the crest. The racing isn’t done there as the attentive riders quickly figure out. There’s another fifty yard dash on the top of the hill before the finish line lights. This is a good sized hill where even the best riders hope to eventually get their times into the low nine second range. This isn’t just a regular motorcycle race. As mentioned, there are limited classes, many having a pretty healthy cash payout for the top finishers. There’s also special bonuses for having the fastest ride on certain brands... say the fastest Honda for example. These are sponsored by local dealers. The extra payout is made possible by the huge crowd of spectators that fill the parking lots with cars, and a ton of street bikes. The action filled show is perfect for spectators, many only having a short drive from one of the several larger cities close by. Big, powerful motors often rule on hills this size, and while that held true today, and few young riders on smaller bikes gave the 52 CYCLE USA, August 2009

Referee Mike Bronk. Kurt Koester couldn’t let all the gold go home with the younger family member... and he tore off a great first round 8.63 ride in the 600 Pro class that held up for the day. Josh Mueller’s first ride put him in second with 8.96 seconds, just five hundredths faster than Kirk Mueller’s run. As if the crowd wasn’t jacked up enough... when the Open TC Allen took the King of the Hill win at the end of the day. Pro riders came out with the “almost” anything goes climbers, it was standing room only all around the hill. Chucky Neinfeldt took his big Harley to the first round lead... much to the delite to the Harley friendly spectator base. His 8.51 time was the fastest of the day to that point. TC Allen rode into second before the break in 8.63 seconds. Paul Buettner, Josh and Kirt Mueller also broke under nine second mark to fill the top five. In the second run, Kirk Mueller lit it up, and topped the hill in 8.17 seconds on his monster Suzuki... a time no one would beat for the rest of the day. he Straight Arrow Enduro Rider’s Hare Scrambles event arrived on the off-road scene with a bang! The bang being a 12-gauge shotgun blast in the hands of Phil Johnson, host of the event at his family’s Summit Lake Game Farm, near Stone Lake, Wisconsin. This private riding area is an offroad riders paradise. It’s hard to imagine a more idyllic setting. Situated next to a stunningly beautiful lake, it’s a scene reminiscent of a 1960’s Hamm’s Beer tv commercial. The facility offers a main lodge, featuring restaurant-fare and a full blown bar. There’s even a TV on the wall showing offroad videos. Trophy presentations in the lodge were a special experience for those of us used to accepting our hardware in, shall we say, more primitive surroundings. And imagine being able to take a shower after the race… feels absolutely decadent. But enough with the clubby atmosphere, let’s get on with the races. Arrows’ Mike Murphy, Tim Kight and Roy Fleming put together a well thought-out 6.5 mile course. It opened up with a wild ride through the newly resurfaced MX track, which received especially high praise from the riders. Phil, himself an MX and off-road rider, blanketed much of the MX course with a layer of decomposed wood chips from his family’s lumber business. The result was Velcro-like traction, making novices feel like experts as they railed the high- banked berms. Mother Nature has been stingy with rain-

fall around these parts, but just as things were getting started, she briefly unwound and pitched a rain squall through the track area. Even with this pre-race precipitation, the dust began to rear its ugly head. Yet, it never got debilitating. The Stone Lake Enduro, also located at the facility, has earned a reputation as the

most grueling event on the District 23 Circuit. Tight, rocky, single-track, that goes on for miles and miles without let up, is the signature of this event. The Hare Scrambles course had a completely different personality. Once the riders roosted through the MX course, they were launched into the woods on a fast, wide, grassy trail, winding through the popple trees. At first it seemed spooky-fast. Steve Reschke, a Senior A rider with over 40 years of off-road competition under his helmet, first thought was “oh, this thing is going to be dangerous-fast”. But as he progressed through the course, he quickly changed his mind; “I see what these guys are up to… nice job”. To keep speeds in check, strategically placed chicanes routed the riders into the woods. The design of the course allowed riders to be gradually strung out through the woods, minimizing frustrating bottle necks when they arrived at the tighter trail sections. Transitioning from the fast sections into the single track brought things down to a nice pace. An occasional tight, technical trail was thrown in to keep one’s attention from wandering. “Just when I was getting tired of one section and waiting for it to end, the trail broke out into completely different terrain. The changes came at just the right intervals”, commented Husaberg mounted Dylan Debel (who took the overall win). Towards the end of the course, a really

tight winding climb through the trees put the finishing touch on a challenging, yet fun, course. What was unnatural was the pace ridden by Dylan Debel on the Husaberg FE 450e. Debel took the overall win with eight laps. Debel’s time was two hours, eight minutes and fifty five seconds; an average of about 16 minutes per lap. Less than three minutes behind was Pete Graves, literally levitating his 450 Suzuki above much of the course. I know, because it seemed every time he rode past, either one or both wheels were hovering above terra-ferma. These two riders blew by so fast, I often missed getting them in the sights of my camera. Rounding out the top five were the usual suspects of Craig Holasek, Robert Lane and Todd Mathwig. These are legendary names with an illustrious, almost royal history in this sport. Under eight and a half minutes separated the top five. Up and coming fast-mover Tim Nienow finished an uncharacteristic 25th place. Nieinow’s air filter worked loose on his new Gas Gas 250, and the effect was… can you say “complete engine rebuild?” Without exception, the riders I spoke to after the event had wonderful things to say about the course. Take away the dust and it would have been about as good as it gets. Plus, there were no major injuries to report, and it is always nice to see bored paramedics. The Overall B class trophy was taken by Jeremy Peterson, ripping off seven laps in two hours, thirteen minutes on his tree-dodging KTM 200. Overall C class victor was Derrick Ruggeberg on his Yamaha YZ250 two-stroke, running down four laps in one hour, seventeen minutes.

The Mini riders ran on a meticulously planned course, crafted by Bob Maki. It wound through the fields and woods just behind the lodge. It was a fun course, and one that allowed easy access to families. It was great to see the future of this sport building self-confidence and riding skills out in the bush. Plus, they looked like they were having 9th Annual great fun. Pee Wee and Premier riders ran an abbreviated version of the adult course. Gibson sees green at RedBud Buchanan, Michigan - July 5 By Bart Newman

ombine Pro-Am points, money, and a chance to ride on the same track the boys of summer get paid to ride on and you have the formula for fast and large “A” classes. That is just what happened the day after the AMA Pro National as nearly 100 “A” riders showed up for a great day of racing at RedBud. Jeff Gibson had the Open A field green with envy as the ‘09 Arenacross champion took top honors and the lion’s share of the purse, plus a pile of Kawasaki contingency as the big four were offering up contingency for the day’s top finishers as well. In the Open A ranks qualifiers had to be run to narrow the field down to 41 for a second moto showdown as the tie breaker. In Division One it was Jeff Loop, Josh Lichtle, Michael Chapman, James Povolny and Greg Durivage leading the way heading into turn one. There was some bar banging in the first turn and it was Povolny that would benefit from the contact as the veteran led over LaRocco’s Leap. With a clear track, Povolny built a lead lap after lap that he carried to the checkered flag. Lichtle found a line out back to get around Durivage for good on lap three to take the runner-up spot ahead of Durivage, Loop and rounding out the top five was Tyler Livesay. When the gate dropped on Division Two it was Gibson entering turn one first but he went wide allowing Sean Lipanovich, Kyle Corman, Austin Haught and Daniel

side of the top ten in the second moto to Aulseybrook to slip under. Gibson had no inclaim fourth which matched his overall. terest in eating roost all moto and went to work displacing folks. Soon Corman and Gibson were out front and fighting for the top spot; Gibson pushed hard but Corman wasn’t going to lie down, and took a well deserved win. Gibson crossed the line in second while Aulseybrook was able to get by Livesay and Haught. The second moto was going to be good, and with all the talent on the line the overall could easily go to any one of five or six riders. Gibson left little to chance as the Ohio rider nailed the start and set sail with an empty track in front of him while Litchtle, Povolny, Loop and Durivage gave chase. Durivage was on the move, first clicking off some fast laps to put himself into second, and then dogging Povolny for a lap before finding his way into second. However by then the damage was done, and Gibson was in control. Gibson (2-1) took the win and overall, Durivage (3-2) was second in the final moto but Povolny’s (1-3) won the points battle and beat out Durivage for second overall. Livesay (4Jim Povolny proved very fast 4) rode well coming from outgrabbing second overall in the Open A class.

t wouldn’t be an Old Iron Classic AHRMA National weekend at Log Road Motocross without a bunch of rain and some amazing track work by resident Log Road dirtoligest Jeff Beerbower. After a morning of rain, Beerbower and his crew had the Michigan facility in great shape for the opening motos. Prompting many to circle Saturday August 14th on there calendars which is the next AHRMA Regional event at the track. In the Open Age Expert class it was Jay Gref (1-1) proving that speed doesn’t fall to far from the tree as the younger Gref took a pair of moto wins to lock up the overall over another second generation AHRMA rider James Smith (2-2). John Alex Clark overcame some scooter troubles in moto one make the win his in the Open Age Intermediate class. Clark nailed the holeshot in moto one only to have some break trouble slow his charge. A quick on track adjustment had the rider back underway, well back of the field, but he was on the move. Clark ran down Ryan Ousley first and then set out after Penton pilot Jerry Grakauskas who was riding well and definitely on his “A” game. Try as he might Grakauskas couldn’t hold off Clark who motored on for the moto one win ahead of Grakauskas and Ousley. In moto two Clark (1-1) turned a holeshot in to a runaway win and overall. Penton proud Grakauskas (2-2) was once again the runner up out pacing podium finisher Ousley (3-3). Loren Westcott might be a New Yorker but he sure looked at home on the moist loamy track at Log Road. Westcott (1-1) was stretching the throttle cable all day long on his mighty Husky, grabbing a double moto win and overall victory in the Open Age Novice class. Not far back was the runner-up in both moto affairs Jason Rowe out of Michigan who was putting his Husky through its paces turning in a couple of great rides. Steve Duncan (3-4) claimed the last spot on the podium, but it wasn’t without a fight as both Randy Collins (4-5) and Jim Kalb (DNS-3). Tragedy struck the event when longtime 60

AHRMA rider and Michigan’s own Tom Boyd suffered a crash resulting in a broken neck and ruptured spinal cored. Tom and his family are in for a long hard fight. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tom and his family. Please watch as more information comes forth on some special events and programs to help Tom and his family deal with this tragedy. A tip of the visor has to go out to announcer Larry Witmer who has as much talent behind the microphone as he does on the track. His interviews with attending legend rider Dick Robbins was fun, informative and interesting. Combine that with his enthusiasm for Vintage racing and his knowledge and it was a winning combination.

Ohnsorg tops Hurricane Hills Mazeppa, Minnesota - July 4/5 By Mike Nelson

he 4th of July weekend saw a ton of racing action at Hurricane Hills MX Park just outside of Mazeppa, MN with two full days of motocross. Riders competed for D23 season points each day as well as points for the track’s own Cyclone series. Kyle Ohnsorg was one of several riders to double up wins for the weekend, but was the only rider to do it in three different classes. Ohnsorg enjoyed every bit of the weekend getting out front early and holding on for the top spot in the Schoolboy, 125cc 2-Stroke, and 250C classes both days over John Tate among others. The first day of racing was held under almost perfect conditions with overcast skies, and an occasional light sprinkle of that provided just enough moisture to keep the track tacky. A few of the big corners got a bit of a new look and feel for the race weekend. The hard packed berms on these corners got flattened out leaving them much wider, allowing for more groves and opportunities to make a move on the competition. Racing kicked off with a batch of youngsters first out of the gates on their 65cc machines. Sterling Wold took the first holeshot of the day and held on for the win over Preston Gray who stayed close, but just couldn’t quite catch Wold. Also competing in the first moto was eight year-old Haley Greig from Burnsville moving up to compete in this class for the first time on her new Suzuki. She didn’t make a trophy run, but did finish all her motos, and had a lot of fun on the track getting used to the extra power of her new ride. Later in the morning when the Women took to the track Jessica Clement took the holeshot and looked to be in control with Sophia Johnson trailing. Near the end of the third lap Johnson got by Clement in one of those reworked corners. Clement fought back into the next two corners, but Johnson was able to close the door on her both times and pull away to get her first ever win in the Women’s class. The afternoon moto was a virtual carbon copy of the morning race giving Johnson her the first place trophy in the Women’s class. Clement got her revenge on Sunday leading the first moto start to finish and making a late race pass to win the second moto and her own first place trophy. Four riders managed to pull down double-doubles for the weekend winning two different classes both days. Richard Ziebell doubled up his wins in +30 & 40B class racing. Eric Evers dominated his competition in the Open C and the 14-24C classes. In the youth classes it was Gavin Janovsky getting double wins in both of his 50cc classes, and Nick Schnagl winning both days in two of the 85cc classes. Most of the other classes split wins over the weekend, making for some friendly rivalries and awesome racing. The only other riders to win both days were Tony Ulrich in +40A, Jerry Schulze in 64

+45A, and Sophia Johnson adding two Girls 9-13 wins to that Women’s win from Saturday. As usual the Gray’s and their staff did an outstanding job of putting on a great weekend of motocross action.
