By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman We are into our second month of the season as I write this. Our last district meeting held at the beginning of May was relatively routine. I can report that we are a bit behind last year on the number of members and our total income is down a bit. We still have plenty of time to meet our projections but it would certainly help the district and the sport if each of members could find another member this year. We have not gotten back to our pre economic crash numbers so we are on a tight budget. More members would help alleviate some of that tightness. Towards that end we have decided to put in for a grant to train more of road instructors. We all know as riders that once we can get a person on a bike they get hooked nine times out of ten. Hopefully at the start of next season we will have another eight MSF instructors to shore up our learn to ride program. We will be getting a new road riding club joining us, and I hope to gain even more. We would like to increase our road program dramatically. At this point we will have two rides scheduled. Watch the web site closely for the dates on those rides. We will more than likely be changing the date for our Ride for Rights, but still plan on keeping it in the month of August, during the Hog Days of August. The other ride will be the MS ride also in August. The 2015 season Motocross awards ceremony will be held at the Mermaid In Plymouth in January of 2016. The Off-road awards ceremony will be held in Little Falls in January as well. In other business, our District 23 apparel in now available. The link is at armca.org. It is customizable for those that would like make their apparel reflect the racing of their children. The only other business of note concerns scoring and the riders responsibility to check the results prior to end of the protest period. In our Off-Road discipline this issue arose and it was decided by the off-road representatives that there will be no changes for any reason under any circumstances once the 30 minute protest period is

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... over. At that time the results are final, cannot be changed for any reason and the points will recorded based on those official results. If you are racing for points it is imperative that you check results within the 30 minute protest period. Unfortunately I will be missing one of my favorite events, the Theilman trail ride as we have a trip to Japan on the schedule for that time period. I envy the riders that get to experience those fantastic trails. With luck I’ll be able to ride the fall one. If you have never been to this event it is one of those must do events. It should be on every riders bucket list. As I stated last month we are still open to ideas for years end awards for our B and C class and Youth class winners. Please let us know what you have for ideas. What you think our young racers would be proud to wear and show off to all their friends and classmates. That about wraps up my report for this issue. Remember to look for at least one more person you can introduce to the sport. We need continued growth to be healthy as an organization and a sport. See you on the tracks and trails of Minnesota. Fantastic Woodstock Opener! McHenry, Illinois - May 22 Woodstock Stadium MX
F
inally... the 2015 season has begun at Woodstock MX! After the original season opener was rained out, tonight kicked off the second full season of District 17 Stadium racing, and on an all new, and very improved track. The track is set on a little larger area. Everything from the track layout, to fencing, parking, spectator viewing and lighting have gotten even better, and it was popular last year. We’ve waited for this opener as much as anything else this season, and were surely given everything we hoped for, and more. Racing was great, and we are fully charged for the rest of the season! The +30 Vet riders officially got to get it all started. Wadsworth, IL’s Sportland2/ MXwebsites.com backed Mike Wendrix backed up his heat race win, by leading every lap of the main. James Molteni had
50Jr rider Dylan Dicicco charging to sixth.

a rough heat race, but bounced back to start the main in third, just behind Everett Dahlberg. Molteni pushed to move up, and in the third lap found his way into second. Late in the race, Marshal Cudney
passed Dahlberg to take over third, setting the final order. In the +30B group, James Wehrman made the easy ride down from Kenosha, WI to take the win. He had to work for it though, after finishing second in the heat. In the main, he got a good jump and led, with Robert Feller and Christopher Dicicco on his rear fender through every lap. Unfortunately there are times when we don’t see a lot of the youngest riders making it to the events... but tonight, Woodstock drew their regular, nice crowd. An even dozen in both the 50cc Jr and Sr classes, and another sixteen in the 65cc classes. In 50Jr, Cobra rider Mikah Carpenter made the trip up from Freeport, and simply dominated his class. He led off the gate and stretched his lead through every lap in the heat and final. The racing behind him was just as impressive... Nolan Simonton ran in second early, then was pushed back to third when Kain Jennison put his KTM into second, with his Woodstock KTM family cheering him on from trackside. A lap later, Jayden Adams, the Southeast Sales rider moved up to third. Then a couple turns later he passed Jennison for second. Jennison tucked in right behind Adams, and looked for a chance to get his position back right up to the last lap, but Adams held on, finishing second. Racing was just as fast and close in 50Sr as yet another Wisconsin and Illinois pair of riders faced off, this time for the win. Preston Zollers ran off to win in the heat race, as Wisconsin’s Benjamin Blazek rolled through the pack after a first lap fall. Blazek finished second behind Zollers, setting the stage for the final.
When the gate fell, Blazek edged Zollers for the lead out of turn one. From there, the two were never more than two bike lengths apart. Both riders seemed to have their prefered sections where they gained a “little” advantage, but it all balanced out. Side by side many times, Blazek never opened the door. The spectators loved it as much as seeing the Pro riders battle in their classes. These two never gave an inch, and Blazek held on to take the win. Back a bit, Shane Larson was under the same type of pressure from Peter Parenti, fighting for third place. Their heated battle came down the final corner where Larson slipped just a little, and Parenti raced past for third. These young riders put on some of the best PeeWee racing we’ve seen in a long time, and it should get only better as the season rolls on. On to the big bikes, Christopher Fortier topped both the 250B and Open B classes, leading through both the heats and mains. In 250B Chad West led Travis Schaefer through the final for second. Daniel Kraemer had to work his way up, and made his last pass just before the checkered flag to finish fourth, ahead of Blake Schaefer on his Honda. 250C had twenty-one riders come off the gate, looking for that all important clean line through the first turn. Getting that holeshot was Blake Bauer on his Suzuki. Bauer never got to relax, but he held a nice two bike lead from the opening lap while Kevin Opfer ran in second. Bauer went on to take the win, leaving the fight for positions behind. Bauer, “The race was good. I got out there after the holeshot, and just held on for the win. The track is really good, and the new layout makes it more “raceable” with more line choices. I really like the sand corner, it is just fun laying it over in the deep rut. I’d like to thank my aunt and uncle for getting me here, and my parents for all the help also.” Logan Rusk spent the moto slowly working his way up to an impressive second place finish, just ahead of Tanyon Palka who got around Opfer on the last lap. Alex Oerkfitz finished fifth on his Kawasaki.
can’t thank the Woodstock crew enough for this, and everything else they do for me and racing.” Owen and Herrlein pushed hard ahead of Kost to finish in the runner-up spots. Heat race standout Wolf got a terrible start, and couldn’t repeat his fantastic run, but showed he’ll be a force to deal with this summer. After seeing how close the top riders were in 250A, you knew starts were really important. When the gate dropped in Open A, Sewell and Owen bounced off each other pretty hard in the first turn, and it didn’t end there. Sewell led Owen, Herrlein, Mays and Wolf onto the track. Owen came into the inside of Sewell “hard” a half lap later, but Sewell having plenty of tight racing experience of his own on the Arenacross circuit didn’t back down. Going into the next bowl corner, it happened again, but this time, neither of them came out of the exchange, and Herrlein became the new leader. The two front runners dropped well into the pack, and now had to work up. By moto’s end, Sewell put a last lap pass on Mays for second, Kost finished fourth ahead of Austin Das and Owen. Herrlein Mike Wendrix topped the took the big win. Owen was twenty-three rider Pit Bike class. less than happy after the race... but that comes with the territory. These top guys expect to win, and leave it all on the track. A great show it was for all of us on the sidelines. In Open C, Chris West topped Tanyon Palka and Logan Rusk for the win. West, “I was able to get good starts tonight. In the heat race I tightened up, and this time I just had to talk myself into relaxing. I haven’t been racing regularly since 2008, so it is really good being back out here and seeing everyone. Having this new track so close to home, and getting good deals on bikes from Cycle Craft Yamaha, made it all possible to start racing again. I rode here once last year, and even on the 450 I have now, this new layout is great to ride. I’m just glad to be racing, and have the track here.” logan rusk had a good night, finishing The biggest class of the third in Open C, and second in 250C. evening, as odd as it may seem
The A classes were stacked with talent. Travis Sewell, Jace Owen, Vaughn Mays, Andy Kost, Daniel Herrlein and more, including new comers such as Justin Wolf, having moved up from the B class. In 250A, Indiana’s Sewell put his Woodstock KTM out front right away. Sewell, “I had a great start, and just held my breath out there for a couple laps. You just never know with guys like Jace and Daniel behind you. The track layout is cool, and it is awesome that they keep improving it to keep everyone coming. I

was for the Pitbike riders. Don’t underestimate this group because of the “pitbike” class name. Some of these little bikes have more money dumped into them than the bikes running in the pro classes... and it isn’t just kids, as proven by fifty plus year old second place finisher Kevin Popaeko. This class is sort of an event of its own... the riders are having fun, some deliver a more serious effort than others, but they are all out there putting on a great show. Race winner Mike Wendrix after the main, “We don’t have that Lake Geneva Friday night thing any more, and there are so many kids just wanting to get involved in this. It can be affordable, and guys can throw on a pair of jeans, grab a simple pit bike and come out here and have a great time. If you want to be out front you do need to get on board with a Sano Systems built bike that will set you back pretty good, but not everyone needs or wants to do that. We had twenty-three guys out here tonight, and everyone had a blast.” The new season is finally off and running... and there will be a great time to had at the fairgrounds all summer. Make sure to make the trip, racing or spectating - you are sure to enjoy it.

D17 Trials Season Opener Peoria, Illinois - april 26 By Liz Jeffries
T
he start of the 2015 District 17 Trials season couldn’t have begun on a better note. The Elmwood Trials, located outside of Peoria IL, began with a gorgeous day: sunshine, blue skies, and warm breezes. The terrain was a spectator’s paradise: rolling hills and pastureland, and most of the sections placed over a wide path making walking a breeze. Not to mention the wonderful volunteers who manned the concession stand. The terrain offered plenty of challenges and surprises for the competitors. From sections with steep, twisty climbs full of trees to ravines, which thanks to the previous day’s rain were full of hidden wet spots ready to suck all the momentum from an unwary rider, and send them spinning to a stop. Even with the hard rain, most of the grounds dried quickly, creating amazing areas of traction, allowing riders to negotiate the tricky off-cambers and uphill logs that spiced up the sections. One of the toughest sections of the day required the more advanced riders to navigate a creek, jumping up and down a soft bank, into and out of the water. There were also plenty of man-made obstacles, everything from criss-crossing log piles to tight twisty turns around metal barrels.
Forty-two riders came out for the day, with only four DNF’s. The knobby class win was awarded to Erik Olson. Chasen Orme took first for the Youth, while Anna Rushbrook took the win in the Women’s class, beating out three other riders. AnnMarie Cross took the Novice class with a completely clean day, another of the seven women who graced the field spread out over three classes. Ralph Littlefield took the win for the Vintage riders, and Frank Totton turned in a great first place ride in the Senior class with only twenty-eight points. The intermediate class, the largest of the day with twelve riders, was won by Ryan Woods. The top classes had some hard battles over the top spots, ending with Advanced awarding first place to Josh Glueck, and Expert to Jim Schaidle. Greg Sassi put in a great show in the Champ class, coming home with the first. Youth class rider Chasen Orme getting his award from ralph lIttlefield
At the end of the day everyone was full of smiles as awards were handed out. Friendships were struck back up as stories were told, everybody reveling in a return to the contest season. A huge thanks to the Trialsmaster Tom Bledsoe, not only for setting up an amazing event, but also providing the group with a great place to play. Now on to the next event: May 24 at Oregon, IL. Kids dominate Fox Valley! Wedron, Illinois - May 3 Photos by Nick Smith, 893 Photography
T
he annual double header Gran Prix and Hare Scrambles event kicks off Fox Valley’s series every year. This year was much anticipated with some “kids” showing great promise late last season. Every year a new rider here or there steps up and shows some promise. This season there is a whole list of them. Today there were a few of them here, and they did a great job in the hare scrambles. 65 Beginner class kicks off the small course first thing with Super Mini, 85cc, 65cc and Women on the big course right behind them. 65 Beginner seen the return of Ian Murphy, a local mx kid who dabbled in HS racing a time or two over his short few years of racing. Cole Morgan, Conner Pilon,
and Nathan Metz all were showing the mx kid the way around the timber early in the race. The small kids mx track which is utilized, you could see “Murph” had a small advantage and would get to the front only to head into the woods, coming out behind again. Well something must have clicked on lap five as he came out of the woods still in the lead and didn’t look back. As the slightly longer race (40 minutes) started to near the end, Morgan and Pilon were back about twenty seconds. Twenty seconds of separation at the end for the top four made for some exciting racing. Lane Davis and Darrin Herman battled in the 50Sr class. Herman trying at every turn to get by, and Davis keeping him at bay. Late in the race Herman got around and was leading into the last few laps. Davis capitalized on a miscue and Mason schuhler on his way to the day’s big win.
took the lead back on the last lap. Mason Wise, Kamdyn Ming and Grayson Plowman finished out the top five. Switching gears and over on to the big course a light turn out for the more experienced Mini kids was a little less intense, but more fun for the contestants in a different way. The only “old” person in the top five overall in the morning youth class was Nikki Dixon. Many will remember that she used to be the track and event story teller and photographer for many years. This year, “kids” like Garrett Ward, Alex Moss, Allie Roland and Tyler Rohl all kept Nikki in check as they rode around, playing almost as much as racing was going on. Dixon won the Women’s class, Roland in second a ways back but kept her honest. Ward and Moss took their class wins, saving a little energy as they both would be directly getting
off this race to the line in little C class for another 1.5 hours. Now for the bigger kids. In fact many being “old” kids. Shawn VanAlsburg has patiently waited to become the “kid” in the +50 class. Quietly turning 50 also this year was another hot rod Kenny Otterbach. VanAlsburg has been pretty dominate this season, and Otterbach’s win or crash style normally kept him up front. Enter in Kevin Finefield and Greg Birkland, known for their ability to ride hard and good conditioning were not going to relinquish there dominance that willingly. “Wardy got me on the start this morning,” stated VanAlsburg who had to battle back from a lack luster start. The big surprise in the class, Jay Hall with a bum knee put his Halls Cycles Gas Gas in the lead for the first lap. No way he was holding that position for 1.5 CYCLE USA, June 2015

hours, riding the Gp the day before he was way too sore for that. “The hot tub at the motel got a good workout so I could ride today,” Hall stated. He fell off the pace and with a leg the size of a small basketball, had to retire at about the hour mark. While this is going on, Birkland, Finefield, and VanAlsburg are freight training through the timber. Late in the race VanAlsburg got around Finefield, Birkland. Jacob Maccarrens and Garrett Ward started coming through the pack. Both starting on the last line, four minutes behind the ole guys on the first line. Going through the barrels on the first lap Ward was in 29th and Maccarrens in 33rd. Eighty-one riders started the race so they both passed a ton of contestants in one lap, then battled each other gaining overall positions as they progressed. In that mix, Matthew Ott picked up the pace starting in the second to last row decided that Ward and Maccarrens needed some company. Ott rode a solid race to win the Open C class. Ward took the 200cc class win on his Riders Choice Kawasaki KX100, after the race says “that was fun, but I am really tired.” (2.5 hours of racing will do that). Maccarrens piloted his Leipolds/ Borelli Suspension Yamaha YZ125 to second. Afternoon big bike classes started on

time, and had a light AA class, but heavy on A class participants. Flyin Ryan Moss on his Woodstock Ktm along with home field kid Service Honda’s Travis Ward were the total of the AA class, lining up with nine A class riders, it was a perfect opportunity for the “new” kid who showed some speed last fall. The A class is stacked this summer, Mason Schuhler, Blake Ryan, not so young anymore is returning from trade school and now a lineman. Benjamin Schmidt and his brother Keagan Schmidt and Halls Cycles Jarred Hall were going to make this afternoon a pleasure to watch. Benny took the lead and looked great early on. Schuhler kept Schmidt in site as Moss and Ryan were playing tag in the top five. Eventually Schuhler took over checked out, the kid has some solid talent. One thing that was discussed after the day was over, blisters. Boys had a bunch of them and they weren’t small.
Benny, and Mason both had almost 60% of their hands blistered. Blake Ryan less and the ole man Moss didn’t have much of any damage. Looks like another part of the growing process is getting the hands in shape before it turns 90 in the shade and is blister time of the year! Bryan Wittersheim took it easy today. Mainly because normally as all the ATV’s are lining up to start their races in the afternoon, he is trying to finish his bike class. Today he decided to just ride the 4-Wheel machine. First lap he came into the barrels and realized that it’s running hot. Lucky he found anti-freeze close by and stops to top off the machine. He now had to work hard to get back to the front. Passing takes much talent on ATV's in HS racing. Chris Breitwieser and Brent Coyle had a good race as well, in different classes but had the philosophy to race the guy ahead of you! Wittersheim overalled the ATV classes with Coyle taking second. Breitwieser third in a solid turn out once again for the ATV classes. After a spring that has seen rain almost every weekend, riders appreciated the drier conditions. Looks like the kids are having fun no matter what age those “kids” are. Fun is where it’s at, some competition mixed in with good friends, and what better way to hang out on a weekend! Cambridge Hare Scrambles Cambridge, Minnesota - May 3 By Keith McKenna, www.keithmckenna.zenfolio.com
O
ff-road racers in Minnesota were sure happy to be back at the track after the winter lay-off. A warm spring day greeted riders to the annual District 23 opening Hare Scramble race at the Norseman MC Club MX track. The day was sunny and dry, very dry. The majority of both the north and the south MX tracks were used, and the Cambridge tracks are known for their horsepower robbing, head-shake inducing, make a grown man pass out from exhaustion, sugar sand. There hasn’t been any precipitation of significance yet this spring so while the trail through the woods was in perfect condition, the moto tracks were dry and dusty! A top priority of the day was to be leading out of the first turn. That would be critical! At the start of the C class racing, the air was so still that the first wave of riders created a haboob (a type of intense dust storm carried on an atmospheric grav-

ity current. Haboobs occur regularly in arid regions throughout the world.) so great, that it could have swallowed the town of nearby Cambridge. No wind though, so one minute later, the gun went
off and the second wave was released into white-out conditions. The poor saps couldn’t see a thing. But charge they did, and so on, for seven waves of racers. Fifteen riders lined up for the C-Junior

Out of the top six finishers, five were riding KTM’s. Certainly a theme in the small displacement classes. At last year’s season opener, one of the racers expected to make a big push for the +30B championship was Yamaha rider #381 Tony Blake. He was so exhausted from his effort as a result of no off-season training, that he couldn’t even finish the race. That was 2014. Today, Blake rolled up to the +30B line slimmer, and better prepped, with an eye to be the “Top Dog”, the “Big Kahuna” in the 2015 season. All the hard work paid off in the form of a silver finish this go-around. The always tough, Kawasaki mounted amanda Johnson Chris Barta figured that any finished just outside of the top 10 in the 250B class.

at the sharp end of the battle by building an insurmountable lead that earned him a “Gold Star” sticker. The fight for the remaining podium position was a see-saw affair between Jerry Costello and Jason McCoy that saw the two hopscotching each other throughout the brouhaha. In the end, Costello claimed the bronze in a thrilling finish. Longtime motocross racer and current AMA Pro motorcycle road racer Kaleb De Keyrel took a weekend between rounds to come try his hand in the woods of central Minnesota, at his first Hare Scrambles ever. When told that part of the course would consist of both the MX tracks, De Keyrel felt that should give him an advantage in the loose conditions. Lining up with the 250B class, he took control from the start of his wave. Blazing a trail and sand blasting the riders that started in previous waves before him that he passed, he led his class all the way, spanking everyone in the B division. Ya know how in Star Wars, when the Millennium Falcon jumps to light speed, and all you see are the trails of light left by the stars? Ya, that is what

it was like for AA class racer Tim Nienow, at the start of the race. When the gun went off, he was outa there! Nienow got swallowed up though as a result of a leaking brake line. The leak developed the day before in practice. Nienow couldn’t locate new copper crush washers, so he had to reuse the old ones. He would dive into the pits to pull the entire rear brake system off another bike to replace his system. That swap cost him four minutes in the pits and seven positions. By the end of lap two Checkpoint Offroad principal Matt Stavish took command of the race. Using his expert experience representing the USA in various past ISDE events as well as his time in the national spotlight, Stavish was riding like a young Luke Skywalker in the scene where he was being chased by some bad dudes through the forest on the hyper-fast skycycles, you remember the scenario! The bad guys are all running into trees and stuff and Luke is in cruise control and then he get to kiss his sister? Well Matt never kissed his sister, (lets just put that to rest right now.) But he did get the gold at the checkers! Meanwhile, further back in the pack #2 Dylan Debel on a CRF450 got off the start in last place with a hard starting bike.
With the sixteen fast riders ahead of him, Debel had to concentrate hard. Thankfully, “The force is strong in this one”! Passing thirteen riders on the first lap, and one more on lap two, he set his sights on the leader Stavish, also on a ‘15 Honda CRF450 after years on a KTM. In the end, after two plus hours of hot dusty racing, Debel ran out of time with Stavish finishing a scant seventeen seconds ahead to secure the gold, while Nienow remounted and charged to score the last spot on the podium. Last year’s AA Champ, Nate Ferderer, was “in a race far, far away”, at a National enduro where placed third in his class. With not a lot of land to work with, the fact that there was a nine mile course carved out for the AA class, and a seven mile loop for the C racers was a topographical miracle, made possible with a lot of imagination and about two trillion linear feet of course marking ribbon. Thanks to Trail Boss Brett Grossman and the rest of the Norsemen Motorcycle Club volunteers for all the super, and hard work. Thanks to the Princeton Volunteer Fire Department for providing the First Responders to staff the medical team and Boy Scout Troop #29. T
he 2015 motocross points season usually starts with the long running Wisconsin Rapids motocross race at the historic Dyracuse Recreational State Park hosted by the Rapid Angels. The exciting news for the spring race was that Mother Nature finally cooperated, giving the fans and racers an excellent day for the event. Rain the week of the race put plenty of moisture in the track and the sunny 60 degree day made for the perfect mix. Morning practice started at 7am sharp with a crisp 32 degree wake up call. The Open A class was filled with riders from all around the district. In the first moto, several of the thirteen riders where up fighting for the lead. Joseph Dretzka, Dylan Ziolkowski, Justin Wolf, and many others were flying past the ski jump on the first lap. The grueling sand caught up to a couple of the riders as the six lap moto went on, making it a race for whomever could ride fast, and stay up the longest. When it came to the end of the race, Ziolkowski had inched his way to the top, followed by Dretzka, and Jacob Wiedmeyer. The second moto saw Vaughn Mays get out to an early lead after an unfortunate crash in the first moto. He was strong and steady for the majority of the race, looking set for a moto win. But the persistent
effort from Colton Karl kept him on his toes for the most of the race. Late in the race from out of nowhere Ziolkowski made a great move around both Karl and Mays to steal the moto win and the overall. In the moto he was followed across the finish line by Mays, Karl, Josh Philbrick, Wolf, and Justis Heckendorf. Overall results were Ziolkowski who won both motos, Karl’s 5-3 scores took second overall, Wolf consistent 4-5 scores were good for third ahead of Mays (11-2) and Heckendorf (7-6). In the Sportsman B/C (14-24) class, eighteen riders lined up, hoping for a shot at the first place trophy. In the first moto Alex St John and Nick Randrup where flying around the course, battling for the top spot. The two swapped positions throughout the race, with St John finishing on top. The battle for third heated up between Tyler Elliott, Tristin Fuerst, and Do- Dylan Ziolkowski after winning the Open a overall. minic Sorge. The trio were battling Randrup mastered the rough conditions for much of the moto before Elliott locked and had a solid lead over second place St the spot down. Fuerst and Sorge swapped John at the end. third. Fuerst’s 4-8, and K. Sorge’s 10-5 rounded out the top five. At intermission, following the first set of motos, the focus shifted from the gnarly sand track to the supercross track where the Peewee and 65cc riders were running motos back to back. 50Jr had eleven riders take to the nice and smooth supercross track. Brody Barth was in command both motos to take the overall ahead of Carson Syverson and Lane Rhyme. Deegan Vanvreede topped the 50Sr class with two moto wins, as did Justin Oehlhof in the 65cc 7-11 class. The “sportsmanship” move of the day was from tenth place 50Jr rider Cole Montgomery. In his first ever motocross race he made his family and those watching very proud, not as much for his finish as for his awesome attitude. He made it a point to tell a little boy that was crying because he didn’t win that he did a good job anyway, and that it was ok he didn’t win, but to have fun. In one of the biggest classes of the day with thirty-two riders, 250C was packed with action. In the first moto, Trever Deedon seemed to be the biggest force, pulling not only the holeshot, but managing to hold on to first place. John Bougneit was 20

running a close second with Austen Madison and Michael Kingstad following close behind. As the moto went on, Deedon checked out and took the eventual moto win. 250C first timer Trytan Stewart came from mid-pack to claw his way up to third. He followed Bougneit to the end until a slight bobble allowed Stewart to get by him for an eventual second place. Moto results were Deedon, Stewart, Bougneit, Madison, and Kingstad. In moto two the track had a reoccurring theme of being very rough. This didn’t prove to be a problem for moto one winner Deedon though, as he grabbed yet another holeshot and took over out front. He didn’t walk away this time, as Stewart had a decent start. Any mistake from Deedon could have been crucial. The two battled hard the whole race, as they set the pace for the field, gapping themselves from the others. In third was Kingstad followed by Matt Mowery. Fifth place was a nice three way battle between Kyle Kohls, Lukas Erdmann, and Madison. The three battled hard. As the moto wound down, Erdmann topped the trio, followed by Madison and Kohls. Deedon’s impeccable 1-1 took first overall, followed by a close second from Stewart (2-2) Michael Kingstad rounded out the podium going 5-3, and Madison’s 4-6 got him a fourth ahead of Erdmann (7-5). It was a successful day of racing at Dyracuse Recreational Park, with over 280 entries in attendance for a great day of racing. The annual spring race was an awesome way to start the AMA District 16 points schedule, as it kicked off the 2015 season, ready or not here it comes!

D
istrict 17 started its 2015 Hill Climb season with a night-day double header on May 2-3 at the Central Illinois M/C near Neoga, Illinois. Mike Pulver was a double class winner both days. The Peters family had a typically good weekend, as dad Matt took four class wins and the overall fast time Sunday, while son Levi was a double class winner Saturday night. Levi, carrying his National #3, took his first win Saturday in the 125cc class with a 3.805 second run on his Yamaha, ahead of Shelby Shafer who posted a 4.184 second time on her Honda. Clayton Hirsch was third. Levi rode unopposed to win the 200cc class. Matt took his first win Saturday in the 450cc class with a first round time of 3.319 seconds on his hot running KTM. Suzuki mounted Troy Camerer carded a 3.399 time for second place with Cody Jenner claiming third on his KTM in 3.466 seconds. Peters brought his KTM back in the 600cc 4-stroke class and found himself in seventh place at the end of the first round, well behind Jenner, who sailed his KTM over in 3.542 seconds to take the first round lead. But Peters responded with a good 3.396 run to take the win on his second ride. Kirk 24

Gorsuch slipped a 3.431 second run in to take second with Camerer snatching third in 3.446 seconds. Peters took his third win Saturday night in the +40 class with another come from behind effort. Mike Pulver took the first round lead with a 3.611 time on his Honda followed by Kyle Galloway and Jon Creek. Peters again rose to the occasion in the second round, posting a class winning 3.159 second time. Pulver was faster too, but his 3.404 run was good for second, while Galloway, also faster on his second ride, had to settle for third on his Kawasaki. Peters won ‘only’ one class at the Sunday event, but his 3.317 second winning time in the 600 4-stroke class was also good for the Fast Time of the Day award – just 1/1000 second quicker than Joe McGurer who posted a 3.318 time to win the 600cc class. Peters had to come from behind again, from a 4.027 second fifth place at the end of the first round with Troy Camerer in first with a 3.544 time. Kirk Gorsuch moved up to second with a 3.514 run, moving Camerer to third when he had to scratch his second run. Mike Pulver was the winner in Super Senior (+50) and 400cc Stock classes Saturday night. Mark Dunbar and Mark Peters followed him Saturday night in the Senior class, with Kyle Galloway and Camerer in second and third in 400 Stock.
Pulver repeated his win in the 400 Stock class Sunday, followed by Galloway and Jeff Jack, then also took the win in the Open Stock class. Jeff Jack made the drive over from Iowa to claim double wins on Sunday, taking the 200cc and Super Sr classes. Cody Jenner only claimed one class win all weekend, but made it count as his 3.123 second class winning time in the 600cc class on his KX500 was also good for the Fast Time of the Day award. He had to overcome a first round full throttle crash on his second ride to overtake Peters who had taken the first round lead with a 3.360 second time, and McGurer. McGurer also slipped under Peters in the second run with a 3.302 second time for second. In youth class action, Andrew Fortner rode unopposed Saturday and against Derick Bell Sunday in the 85Sr class. His 3.215 second time Saturday night was good for the Youth Fast Time award. Brodie Bennett was the 85Jr class winner both days, with Lilah McGurer and Mitch Moran flipping second and third behind him. Bennett’s 3.095 second time on Sunday was good for the Youth Fast Time that day. Lilah McGurer took the 65cc class win both days, followed each day by Mitch Moran, Jaydn Aliprandini and Clayson Price.
Cody Jenner topped the 600cc class on saturday.

Wauzeka Trials Double Header Wauzeka, Wisconsin - May 16/17 By Kevin Huber
O
scott Bauer won the Intermediate class both days.
n May 16 and 17th the Wisconsin Observed Trials Association had their annual event at the Mark Doll farm west of Wauzeka, Wisconsin. This was one of the six events featured in the May issue of the national AMA magazine “American Motorcyclist” on the GO RIDE page. That issue also featured a national trials rider on the cover. Not sure if the magazine affected turnout, but there were riders from Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and Michigan competing at Wauzeka. This year the weather forecast predicted rain both days. This may have scared some of the riders away, which lead to a smaller turnout than normal. Somehow, all the storms split and went north and south of the area, so nobody had to ride in the rain. Those that rode had a fun and exciting two days. The many acres of wooded cow pasture provided many opportunities for exciting trials sections. Many of the sections used some of
the same area as last year, but were run in the reverse direction. This made the riders find new approaches to the obstacles. Saturday there was still a lot of mud left over from the previous week’s rain which made for some slippery riding. Mark Doll set up a power washer by the barn so riders could remove the mud from their bikes Saturday evening. Sunday the sun was drying out most of the area and traction was improved, and nobody had to be towed to get out of the pit area. saturday results: Vintage: 1.Skip Check Women: 1.Janice Wallerich Novice: 1.Jack Drummond Interm: 1.Scott Bauer 2.Ryan Gustafson 3.Jeremy Voightlander 4.Jay Hood 5.Adam Gustafson advanced: 1.Will Check 2.Rob Walters 3.Tom Littlefield 4.Michael McConaughy 5.Jake Poth expert: 1.Ryan Rivenburgh 2.Tony Damhoff Champ: 1.Luke Littlefield sunday results: Vintage: 1.Skip Check Women: 1.Janice Wallerich Novice: 1.Jack Drummond Interm: 1.Scott Bauer 2.Mitch Littlefield 3.Ryan Gustafson 4.Adam Gustafson 5.Jeremy Voigtlander advanced: 1.Rob Walters 2.Tom Littlefield 3.Keith Johnson 4.Jake Poth expert: 1.Will Check 2.Paul Philbrick 3.Ryan Rivenburgh Champ: 1.Luke Littlefield 2.Noel Smage CYCLE USA, June 2015 25

Awesome day at Berm Benders Mora, Minnesota - april 26 By Keith McKenna keithmckenna.zenfolio.com
T
he 2015 MX season is underway and the folks at Berm Benders Raceway near Mora, MN were prepped and ready to kick off their 2015 Civil Series races with a number of changes to the facilities and an eye to making racing even better than it has been. Off of the track, a mini course was created, not for competition, but for the very littlest MX enthusiasts to get as much seat time as they want in a non-competitive environment until they feel ready to mix it up on the racetrack. Also, a vacant lot on the premises has been upgraded to a BMX park for the little ones to gather at after the day’s racing is done. Mother’s Day at Azzie lake Mills, Wisconsin – May 10th By Morgan Strauss
A
ztalan Cycle Club once again hosted an awesome day of racing for Mother’s Day! The day started off cloudy and rainy for the second race of the year, but there was still a great turnout of riders! The rain showers throughout the day kept the track in awesome condition and made for a good day of racing. The day kicked off with PeeWee 7-8, where Ben Blazek was able to steal the holeshot with Ayden Price, Nolan Schweighardt, and Ryan Bussen close behind. Price and Blazek put up a battle in the second lap with Price coming out in first. Blazek didn’t let up, and held onto second, with Schweighardt in third. In moto two, Blazek was able to pull the holeshot, missing a big crash that took place at the start. By the time the riders reached the other side of the track Blazek was still in first, with Schweighardt quickly gaining speed. In the third lap, Schweighardt put in the move for first

Momentum switched, taking second, and Busse third. and by the third lap, Norred was leading Schweighardt (3/1) took the overall, with with Telfer close behind. Norred held onto Blazek (2/2) second, and Bussen (4/5) third. Blazek later on, “I had some of my best battles this weekend and had so much fun. I’d like to thank my sponsors, Rob Performance, KTM, PR2, Spy optics, Oberlin Filter Company, and my mom, dad & brother Chase!” The first big bike class of the day started with 125Jr. When the gate dropped, Tommy Gerlach was able to grab the Brandon Martyniak took the overall in 85cc 9-13. holeshot with Nate Telfer right at his rear fender.

first at the checkers, followed by Telfer, Doeberlein, and Blume. In the second moto, Doeberlein was able to rush for the holeshot, and held onto that first place position as the riders reached the plateau. Norred, Telfer and Warner weren’t far behind. In the second lap, Doeberlein stumbled, allowing Norred to steal the lead position, with Telfer right behind. Telfer put the pressure on Norred, and quickly moved into first place by the start of the third lap. Telfer held the position to the checkers. Doeberlein was able to finish third with Warner following close behind for fourth. Telfer (2/1) took the overall, with Norred (1/2) in second. Telfer, “The day went very well, good lap times, my bike ran great, and it definitely showed for taking two firsts and a second in the 250C full gate drop. The weather was definitely in my favor.
The dirt held nicely, and there were many fast lines forming. I wouldn’t have been able to race today if it wasn’t for my brothers Logan and Bryce putting in a fresh motor this week. Big thanks to Rock River for helping me keep my bike in its best shape. Last and most importantly, I’d like to thank my father for supporting me to do my best in this sport.” It was a great day in +25A, where Joe Dretzka was able to pull away after the holeshot. Dretzka held onto first, with Jonathan Hartman, Dillon Kau, and Cody Simonton shortly behind. Dretzka started putting a gap between him and the other riders in the third lap. Hartman, Kau, and Simonton continued to hold onto the following positions. As the riders reached the start jump in the fourth lap, Kirsten Raemisch and Jeff Bennett were having a close battle for fifth place. By the start of the Kaylen Pellmann went 4-4 in the twenty rider Women’s class.

fifth lap, Raemisch was able to work her way into fifth. Dretzka held onto first at the checkers, followed by Hartman, Kau, and Raemisch. In moto two, Dretzka once again stole the holeshot, but Hartman made sure he was close behind. Dretzka stumbled in the west side of the track, and Hartman took the opportunity to move into first, with Simonton, Lucas Padrutt, Keith Degrand, and Raemisch following. Hartman continued to pull ahead for the rest of the race.

In the last lap, Padrutt and Raemisch saw the chance and took it, as the two moved in second and third around Simonton. Hartman (2/1) finished with the overall, followed by Dretzka (1/5) in second, and Raemisch (4/3) third. When Senior +50 hit the track for moto one, Daryl Willing was out front with the holeshot. As Willing hit the plateau, he had a small gap in front of Tim Boblin, Jeff Ramsay, Mike Boyden, and Gregg White. White made the pass around Boyden for fourth place, as Willing continued to pull away. Somewhere on the west side of the track, Wayne Welzien took an opportunity to move around Boyden for fifth. Willing pulled off the first place finish, followed by Boblin, Ramsay, White, and Welzien. In the second moto, Willing once again managed to pull the holeshot, but this time Ramsay stayed right behind him. Willing and Ramsay kept a close gap with each other, while Boblin, Welzien, Robert Edler, and Boyden fought for the following positions. As the riders made it to the plateau for the second lap, Willing started to pull away from Ramsay. Meanwhile, Boyden and White battled for sixth, with White stealing the position at the start of the third lap. Boblin ended up making the pass in front of Ramsay for second, leaving Welzien for fourth. Willing (1/1) walked away with the overall, Boblin (2/2) took second, and Ramsay (3/3) took third. It was an awesome day in 250B, where Jamison Duclos was able to grab the holeshot followed by Taylor Strauss to get it all started. By the time the riders got to
the start jump at the beginning of the second lap, Duclos had Strauss, Jake Garwood, Mason Persha, and Jason Lucht following him. The riders held their positions, until the third lap when Austen Madison made his way around Lucht for fifth. Duclos and Strauss never stopped their battle up front and started gaining a gap on the rest of the group. Meanwhile, Justin Hall worked his way up to sixth and was quickly gaining time on Lucht. By the final lap, Hall made the pass around Lucht for fifth. In the second moto, Duclos again pulled the holeshot. As the riders reached the plateau, Duclos continued to hold onto first, with Strauss right behind. Garwood followed in third, leaving Madison and Persha to fight for fourth. Lucht moved into fourth around Madison and Persha as Duclos and Strauss started to put some distance between them. On the west side of the track, Persha and Hall were able to make the pass around Lucht for fourth and fifth. Duclos took first at the checkers just ahead of Strauss. Garwood, Persha, and Hall pulled off the following positions. Duclos later, “The race day went great; I just rebuilt my bike Saturday because dirt got down in the bottom of the motor, so my bike was fresh. I haven’t really been able to ride as much I usually do because I’m also in track and homework takes up a lot of my time, but conference is next week so I can get back to my focus of motocross soon. I won my first three races, but my fourth was the most fun. I went down rubbing elbows with one of my best friends, Taylor Strauss, and he ended up winning. He’s made some huge leaps and bounds after starting racing just a few years ago. It’s awesome to be able to ride with someone who is at the same pace, shares the same passion, and that I’m so close with. I couldn’t be where I am today with my sponsors: Rock River Powersports, RoostMX, Cycra Plastic, ARC Levers, my trainer Seiji Ishii, Yamaha, Yamalube, G.Y.T.R., Dunlop, X-brand, Bell Helmets, Fly Racing, EVS, FMF, PR2 Suspension, K&N Filters, Cycle Trade, and most importantly, my mom and dad.”
Despite the chilly and rainy weather, the racing stayed competitive all day and the track conditions never deteriorated, thanks to the track crew. It was an awesome turn out and Aztalan would like to thank everyone who came out. We hope to see you all next month. results 125Jr: 1.Nate Telfer 2.Eddie Norred Jr 3.Seth Doeberlein 4.Devin Blume 5.Braden Warner 250a: 1.Justin Wolf 2.Dillon Kau 3.Timmy Baake 4.Kirsten Raemisch 5.William Menzel 250B: 1.Jamison Duclos 2.Taylor Strauss 3.Mason Persha 4.Jake Garwood 5.Justin Hall 250C: 1.Seth Doeberlein 2.Nate Telfer 3.Lucas Zimmerman 4.Michael Kingstad 5.Jordan Martz +25a: 1.Jonathan Hartman 2.Joseph Dretzka 3.Kirsten Raemisch 4.Lucas Padrutt 5.Cody Simonton +25B/C: 1.Nate Knottnerus 2.Neil Knottnerus 3.Jamie Baake 4.Josh Ramsay 5.Justin Hall 65 7-11: 1.Elijah Tetzlaff 2.Cole Godfrey 3.Justin Oehlhof 4.Owen Haseleu 5.Spencer Hein 85 12-15: 1.Dj Gritzmacher 2.Eddie Norred 3.Dalton Hein 4.Ronald Schmidt 5.Dane Klinger 85 9-11: 1.Brandon Martyniak 2.Eugene Wolff 3.Dylan Duclos 4.Elijah Tetzlaff 5.Cole Godfrey 85 9-13: 1.Brandon Martyniak 2.Eugene Wolff 3.Brody Spiekerman 4.Elijah Tetzlaff

pring Creek Park opened its gates to welcome a good crowd to the 2015 motocross season. Austin Forkner, although a Missouri resident, seems to have become a regular over the last year or so and he responded to the challenge of the Spring Creek circuit with a dominating performance in the B classes. His speed was great enough to reel in most of the A class riders who had their gate drop well ahead of the B class. Other riders impressed also as Christian Craig mastered a couple of the A classes ahead of Henry Miller. Jayden Clough ran tough in the mini classes as Josh Boaz rampaged in other mini classes. Drew Slocum and Payton Harrison duked it out in 250 and Open C. The track was in good early season shape, prepped by John Martin and his motley crew. The weather was fairly cooperative and the sun warm but not harsh enough to poach the Minnesotans as they awoke from their winter hibernation. The +30A gang was early in the running order and Tim Zebro shot off the line to lead early in the moto. Much to his detriment, the old master Bruce Gates was lurking behind him. Gates ratcheted up his pace and slipped by on lap two while Zebro found a new challenge from Brent Mason. Gates went in for the win (about his 3000th) and Mason snared second over Zebro. Mike Luoma battled with Matt Dohrn and prevailed for fourth. Mason scooped up the holey in moto two but Gates took over the lead as they hit the pro hill. Gates pulled out a bit of a gap and Mason dealt with Zebro’s efforts for most of the rest of the moto, hanging on for a two bike-length lead across the finish line. Luoma and Dohrn reprised their roles as fourth and fifth. Austin Forkner shot off the line to lead when the 250B class was unleashed upon the track. Forkner quickly distanced himself from the pursuit and was on a mission. Behind him the main battle was for second and Nick Schnagel managed to secure that prize for himself with Sam Wise grabbing third over Zach Gallette and Mateo Johnson. Moto two went off in a nearly similar fashion, Forkner blitzing the field with warp-speed. Schnagel and Wise duked it out over second, but this time 34

Moto two featured another Steberg holeshot and he once again had the pace for the win. Clough ran Payton Harrison leads Drew slocum in the whoops!

Rain doesn’t slow Byron Action
#238 Calvin richards went on to win both Quad C motos.
Byron, Illinois - May 3 Motosports Park
T
he 2015 Motosports Park/ Barone Spinal Care Nuclear Series is now well underway, this being the third round of the season. Unlike earlier rounds, this day was under the threat of storms blowing in, and just when the weatherman was making it sound like we would be spared, they got it wrong - again. Good news is, most of the racing on the upper track for the kids, and quad riders was done already when the light rain started mid-day. With all the new sand, and well prepped track to start the day, the rain actually made for great conditions... a little slippery, but deep corners that many riders really enjoyed, even if they needed to do a little extra washing when they got home. Wisconsin’s Marcus Misfeldt pulled the holeshot to kick everything off on the upper track, in the Quad C class. Right away he was getting pushed by Brian Shelato and Calvin Richards. A lap in, and Richards moved up to second with Tyler Shugars stepping into third. Those positions held until the last lap, when Misfeldt made a small mistake, and got dropped back to third. Richards took the win, and then backed it up in the second moto for the overall (1-1). Misfeldt finished second in moto two ahead of Shugars. Shelato went 4-4 to fourth overall. Steven Bickett topped the Quad B class, as Chase Dorsey did in 300cc Quad. Joey Brunia won both motos in the 90cc Quad class ahead of Gavin Mortensen. Savan36

ski had the hot hand off the start, grabbing the holeshot on his Suzuki. Michael Billon was second ahead of Dalton Hancher, Steven Minkus and Tanyon Palka. Billon took over the lead a couple corners into it. Clearly on a mission, Hancher passed Zielinski, then took the long way around a rough sand section to pass Billon for the lead. Hancher after the moto, “It’s already getting rough out there. I kept taking the outsides and keeping it pinned while they were fighting to be inside. I made some quick passes then just rode.” Hancher took an easy win, while Billon held on to second. Coming through the pack, John Krska made a lot of moves to finish third, his final pass on Zielinski. Palka finished fifth after a moto long battle with Minkus. Woodstock KTM/ Decal Works backed Krska, “I didn’t get a very good start, and had to really work on moving up. I put my head down and rode smart, not wanting to crash. The track is near perfect with good lines already so it was fun.” Hancher pulled the holeshot in moto two, and from there was unstoppable. Iowa’s Drake Hayes made a few good moves, and finished second, after a seventh in the first moto. Hayes, “Compared to earlier, the track was much more tacky, once the rain came and it was tilled, it was still really good. This moto was a lot better as I had a better start. The first moto I just had to work up to seventh, and that was the best I could do.” Billon had a frustrating moto, running up front early, then falling on the first and second lap in the same tight corner before
nah Mortensen went 4-4 for third overall after the two third place riders each dnf’ed in one of the motos. On the lower track, one of the first groups off the line was the sixteen rider 250B class. Cody Barnes put his Yamaha in front around the first corners. Hot on his rear fender after slipping into second, Jacob Selock was pushing hard on his Honda. Selock made the pass into the lead in the second lap, and never looked back. TZR backed Selock after taking the win, “I pulled a decent holeshot, around third place and worked my way up. Once there I just wanted to stay smooth. I like the sand and think that’s where I make some time on the others.” Barnes held onto second even with Jarred Berggren never giving him a second to catch his breath. Rj Mckenzie was right there in the mix as well, finishing fourth ahead of Dylan Boyd. In the second moto, Selock got past Barnes in the opening lap, then stuck a front wheel in one of the ruts, dropping to the ground. He got up in second, but gave up a lot of time, too much. Barnes went on for the win, taking down the overall as well (2-1). Berggren rode in third while James Hermes climbed his way up to fourth, passing Justin Peterson in the last lap. Twenty-four 250C riders made for an exciting race, with close tussles all through the pack. Out front, Bobby Zielin- all smiles at the Nuke race...

third as Dworzynski didn’t run as well in the wet conditions, settling for fourth. Michael Westbrook took control in the first moto of +45, never relinquishing the lead. James Coon ran in second early, then was bumped back a spot when Daryl Willing moved past. In the second moto, Coons found the conditions to his liking, and ran off with the win. Westbrook didn’t make it out of the first couple turns, and came back as far as third, behind Michael Namowicz. Coon’s 3-1 was also good for the overall. The 14-24 class is always fun, bringing a bunch of young, talented riders together. Chris Antolak led Arick Abraham around the first couple corners, but coming on quick was Logan Skaggs. By the end of the first lap Skaggs had taken the lead, and was riding flawlessly as he went on for the eventual win. Cody Behrens finished fourth, just ahead of Dylan Boyd. Skaggs returned in moto two for another win, this time ahead of Abraham, as Antolak finished back in the pack. Brock shelton fought hard for the Open C class win (2-1). The +25 class was
the finish area, running into more problems later as well. Minkus finished third ahead of Palka for third and fourth overall behind Hayes, as their moto scores all tied at nine. In +55, Husqvarna rider Dan Dworzynski took the holeshot and led most of the first lap. Honda rider William Ziesk spent a lap going back and forth with Dworzynski before securing the lead in the second lap. Once there, the order was set when Crystal Lake, IL’s Steve Abt put his Husky into third. Ziesk won in moto two, as Abt stepped it up and finished second in the moto, and for the overall. Orville Kline improved his first moto fourth to cross in
John Krska ran to third in the first moto of 250C.

all about Jonathan Six, as he took both moto wins. He got out front right away in the first moto, and worked up in the second round. Ryan Rowntree was up to the task offered by Eric Feuillerat in the first moto, making the pass stick in the second lap. Rowntree finished second in moto two as well, this time ahead of Travis Ruchti, who settled for fifth in moto one behind Brad Behrens. A fast class as usual. Jared Berggren led off the line in the 125cc class, giving it up in the second lap as rival Cody Barnes made his move. Randy Mclaughlin rode well for third, beating Chase Boykin to the line. In the second moto Barnes went down hard early, and Pace worked his way up, eventually winning. Pace after the moto, “I got the holeshot, and then fell back with some arm pump. I made my way back up, then Cody crashed and I kept pushing. It was a little tough out there so I tried running a taller gear to stay up in the muddy sections.” Pace’s win was good for second overall (5-1). Berggren finished runner-up in both motos, thus taking the overall. Barnes finished fifth in the second moto, recovering well for third overall. Barnes, “I worked up in the first moto to win and that was great. This moto I was running up there but I tried to make a pass and went down pretty hard on one of the jumps. I got back up, and just rode to the end.” Verona, WI’s Zach Coons had a perfect four moto sweep in the day’s A classes. He started it all by setting the fastest lap time in the A class timed practice. In Open A, he got out front in the first moto as the rain was coming down harder. Johnathan Six, Eric Feuillerat, and Brad Behrens all were left on the ground in the first turn. Logan Skaggs ran in second ahead of Ryan Rowntree to the end. In the second moto, it was a repeat for the top three. Six worked his way into fourth in moto one, and had a little easier time of it in moto two. 250A saw some mistakes by all the riders, including Sportland2’s Kawasaki rider Coons, who dropped his bike at least once in the
slippery ruts while the rain fell. He still won the motos as Skaggs again went 2-2 for second. Even with the day ending in rain... the track was good, and it was another successful day at Motosports Park for sure. All the added sand, and run-off drainage built into the facility really allows it to handle rain well. By the time you see this, the qualifier will have been run, and we’ll be back to a bunch more Nuke Series racing in June... irt bike racing in spring, in the bluff country of southeastern Minnesota, what could be better? After the long winter layover, with flowers in bloom, green grass, and the woods exploding in a canopy of lush green... and motorcycles! On Mothers Day 2015, the mom of two AMA National Pro Motocross contenders, Greta Martin and the rest of her band of team opened up their little corner of the world to the off-road community, to come on out and enjoy what is always a must attend event in the upper midwest. The Spring Creek South Hare Scramble Race.
Multi-time National Hare Scrambles Champ and Spring Creek MX Park owner, John Martin and company put together an amazing course for all classes in attendance. The Premier class and the PeeWee riders got to advance their hill climbing skills in the myriad ascents and descents on the miles of two-track atv trails that made for fast lap times. Some of those same riders also lined up for the C-class race, which consisted of even more climbing, coupled with some back and fourth grass track and technical single track leading straight down the face of the bluff. Heady stuff indeed, and a lot of fun! Mr Martin, having a bit of a sadistic streak in him, figured that the AA, A and B class riders were gonna earn their blisters for the day! Their course

included; technical climbing, super steep descents, sections through a marshy, sapling field with a barely cut or marked single track, deep sand washes, mucky river bottoms, sections where the earth literally just falls away from the trail, and lots and lots of mossy, wet off camber log crossings. For sure, not a race for the faint of heart! So, they got all of the youngest racers lined up for the start of the Macro/ Micro race on a sweet grass track that was mowed into the field used for spectator camping when the pro motocross circus is in town. The course looked to be around 3/4 mile long, snaking
through the field. At the drop of the flag in the Macro class, Vincent Harens dropped the hammer on his 50cc machine and put on a riding clinic, laying down a string of fast laps to take the wire to wire win with KTM racer Trey Bremer in second and Zach Brown third. Elsewhere on the grounds, the Premier class, Peewees and Girls 9-15 class was making a mockery of gravity, in the bluffs. Madison Siebenaler was certainly hot in the Girls 9-15 class last year and she sure isn’t slowing down in her advancing age as she topped the class. #2 finisher Cora Reschke enjoyed the CYCLE USA, June 2015

In the Premier class, Kyle Magnuson and Jayme French on the first two times through the scoring loop, were within three seconds of each other, with French’s KTM on point. On lap three Magnuson got by and led by twelve seconds. At the end of lap six Magnuson came through the loop at 59.17 seconds, to get waved through for one more lap. French hit the loop at 1 hour and 32 seconds. Thirty-two seconds after the one hour timed event expired. Up to that point, it was a ferocious race. 85cc motocross standout Aaron Boatman held the bronze position for the entirety of the race. Boatman lined up again for the Junior race. In the four lap fracas, Boatman would be at the sharp end of the battle for
the first three laps that would have the field climb to the top of Mt Martin, and back down again through a fast serpentine ally amidst the dense forest. A slight bobble on lap four allowed a hard charging Austin Nelson to elbow his way into the lead. At the checkers, Nelson headed Boatman by five seconds. Kyle Becker crossed for third. It appeared that retirement lasted for exactly “One Race” for last year’s Women’s champ. Mary Schreiner pulled her Yamaha YZ250 out, and gassed it up for another go. The top three women were able to clock four laps of the undulating course, with Schreiner grabbing the win, Kelsey Grinhaug wheeling her Honda to silver and Kristi Grote third on a KTM. There’s a strange phenomenon that happens sometimes when I am in the woods shooting photos, and specifically only when the +40A class is coming past. Every time Nelson lines up on the diminutive YZ, he gets his Pacino on and is all like, “Say hello to my little friend” then he pulls the trigger to unleash a barrage of blistering laps that lays waste to the competition. Only a few short seconds back in third at the finish was the KTM of Adam Barlow. I think that I speak for all who know her, that if they could not spend Mothers Day with their own moms, that it is good to hang with Greta Martin on the day set aside to honor the women who threw their lives into granting us racers life. Thanks for being such a great hostess. And for John Martin, Mike Quinn, Mikey Quinn Jr, and the rest of the Spring Creek MX staff and volunteers, thanks for continuing to put together racing events that build family bonds, friendships and memories that will last a lifetime for so many. second stick taking second overall and Whitney grabbing third. 250A was a great race today that went all the way down to the last lap of the second moto. In the first moto Brady Neys took the win followed by Nick Hancher and Bryten Brill. hings got back into swing at Sunset Ridge this past weekend with a great day of District 17 racing. For me this is my first weekend back out at the tracks and it’s great to see everyone. Many riders have moved up in classes, changed bikes or numbers so it was a little bit of relearning curve as the day went on, realizing who some of the riders actually were. The weather over the weekend was soggy at best, with a lot of rain in the area. Some were deterred by the forecast, but the track was in perfect shape, actually needing a bit of water towards the end of the day and the rain never came. This made for some great riding conditions for everyone to enjoy. The track had changed slightly since I had been here last with a simplified version of the second turn and the changed section before the finish line looking to provide two fast lines, making things very interesting. 85Sr came out strong today with a great battle. In the first moto Cameron Campbell took the win followed by Zennon Shain and Spencer Whitney. They lined up in the afternoon for their second moto with Campbell coming into the first turn hot, taking the lead with Shain and Whitney right behind. At the first jump Whitney made a pass for second with Shain right on his back tire. Coming over the ski jump they were side by side, and would battle the rest of the race, swapping spots. As they made it to the finish line Campbell held on for the win overall, with Shain making Chase sexton scrubbing speed off on one of the many plateau jumps.
Cantrell shot around the outside with a little more heat to take back second, making the outside look a little more appealing. Hancher had almost caught back up on the last lap and only doubled the holy pistoley, setting him back. He charged in hard and down the last turn Hancher now took the outside and got enough run at the finish line to take over second at the last minute. With the flag waving the day ended with Neys taking the overall, Hancher second overall and Cantrell third overCYCLE USA, June 2015

all with a sixth in the first moto. Open C riders were out in force today, packing into the gates ready for action. In
the first moto Michael Billon took the win with Seth Becker and Hunter Grampp rounding out the top three. Off the line in the second moto Billon flew out front for the holeshot with Sean Jergens and Aaron Anderson all flying around the first turn with the pack swapping places all around, keeping it clean and everyone on two wheels. Around the third turn Jergens made a pass on Billon for the lead and Grampp moved into the action taking over third. Billon came back strong on his Yamaha, moving back into the lead before the first jump. Coming around after the first lap Billon was 85Jr winner, Iowa’s Patrick Murphy.
still on the charge, but was contending with Becker who was making strides from a bad start, and now up to second. Coming down the wire Becker made the pass on Billon to take the lead and the overall, as we know it’s always better to get 2-1. Billon held on for second overall and Grampp stayed consistent with a third overall. 250B was exciting with the first moto putting Chase Sexton off the track with some bike issue, leaving the win to Ian Pistole, just moving up to B this year followed by Parker Smith and Taylor Mclaughlin. The second moto came off the line with Sexton rocketing around the outside to take over the lead followed by Mclaughlin and Pistole. Coming over the first jump Sexton was already off to a decent lead with Smith cutting through the traffic, moving into second with Mclaughlin hanging onto third. On the second lap Corbin Lenaway had taken over third only to get passed back after the rollers with Mclaughlin fighting for it out there today. The race came to a close with Sexton taking the win, Smith in second and Mclaughlin third. Smith with two second places took the big overall win, Mclaughlin took second and Pistole third overall.

egacross got underway this weekend the 23rd of May with their second event of the season. With just enough moisture from earlier in the week, the track shaped up really great with some great ruts and multiple lines to keep things exciting all night. The track has been ever evolving from the initial big changes made last season, and it is really running smooth now. The addition of a sand section before the finish line topped things off to make things fun for everyone. There was a great turnout tonight and the addition of a pit bike class filled the gates for extra fun out at Megacross. Supermini was up on the line early in the evening. Off the line Jonah Geistler got out for an early lead with Conner Burger and Tommy Fortune right behind. Coming around the second turn the inside bunched up as Fortune capitalized, putting his Kawasaki up into second while Burger held off the pack to keep third. Heading through the table tops Geistler was already creating a gap while Fortune was giving it everything. On the third lap Garrett Ward pushed his way up to the front, landing off the second table top to secure third. As they came
The action was on strong in 250C tonight with several great battles. Twenty riders came hard into the first corner with Will Addis coming out in front. Cody Slamans and Colton Saylor were close behind as the pack bunched up into the second corner. Slamans came into the whoops the new leader followed by Addis and Saylor as things started to get into pace. On the second lap Charles McCook was on the move through the group, passing four people on a great inside move going all the way to third. Addis went down putting Tanyon Palka up to third and McCook into second, now with a clear track to make up ground on Slamans. As the race went on the battle for third was heated before Palka went down, giving way for Alex Parks to get into the mix. The last lap was approaching and McCook wasn’t giving up as he caught up to Slamans, looking for a way to get around him. Heading into the back of the track McCook pinned it through the whoops to take over the lead as Parks followed right behind him, completely turning the tables. The top three battled all the way to the line which left McCook up front for the win, Parks and Slamans keeping it up to finish off the race strong.
over the finish for the checkered flag Geistler held on out front for the win with Fortune and Ward rounding out the top three. 250A was a great race tonight with Travis Sewell and Daniel Herrlein showing up fresh out of Arenacross, and Maxx Malatia coming back to ride for the first time in eight months. The gate dropped to Tom Hofmaster putting his new Yamaha in front with Herrlein and Sewell right up there with him for a very close race. Sewell got the inside on Herrlein to take over second and then started to give Hofmaster a run for his money. Sewell looking for a break as Hofmaster rode flawlessly out front with the pressure right behind him the entire time. On the fourth lap Sewell went hard on the outside over the table leading into the whoops and kept in pinned to the inside of the next turn to take over the lead. On the last lap Ohio’s Herrlein got by Hofmaster through the table tops to move up into second. The race came to a close with 50cc rider Trey lee. Sewell taking the win.

14-24B had some great battles to heat up the night with Cody Barnes coming out hard to take the holeshot just barely ahead of RJ Mackenzie and Corbin Lenaway. Mackenzie got pushed a little wide letting Lenaway up to second. Making a charge through the chaos was Blake Ryan as he picked off Mackenzie and pushed up to take over second. Hitting the tabletops Ryan was able to gain some speed on Lenaway and make second stick. Later in the race Barnes was starting to check out as Travis Ward was making a late charge through the field. Ward took over third from Lenaway down the straight and went right after Ryan putting on the pressure hard. Into the sand section Ward was able to make the outside to inside work. They came across the checkers with Barnes taking the win, Ward in second and Ryan holding onto third. It was a great night of racing out a Megacross. With round 50
