From the Back of the Pack

By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman It has been busy this past month and there was a fair amount of business that took place at our September meeting. I will try to recap all of it for you here. Website update: It has been discovered that the requests for access have been going to a dead end mailbox, this is being worked on as I write this. For the coming year we are working on a system that will grant access when membership is received in the district office. This would be our ideal fix. Access to the forums will be granted at that time. We are also looking into a system that will enable us to send out email blasts to all the members that provide us with an email address. Look for more on this in the future. We will also be making the event report form available on line for our clubs and event promoters as these forms are mandatory for each event. Government relations report: The Houston MN riding area is moving ahead and it sounds like there will be some trail building classes for our DNR folks so we can this project started and finished this coming season. The year-end awards have been chosen. The plaques will be a canvas picture specific to each discipline. Jackets will be awarded to class winners in the championship classes and hoodies

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... to class winners in the B and C classes. This year’s banquet for motocross will be Jan. 16th, at the Mermaid in Mounds View. The off -road banquet and awards will be held Jan 30th, at the Falls Ballroom in Little Falls. You may want to start looking for rooms early. Motocross business, there was discussion about our new Featured Events which is the 2 day race 3 moto format and scoring by moto rather than moto averaged finish. By the time you read this the event will have been held and we will have received feedback on the system. As always we will inform the membership on the direction we go for 2016. On the pro scene as most of you know both the 450 and 250 National titles were won by Minnesota racers. Congrats to Ryan Dungey on another title and on moving into third on the all time win list. We also have to congratulate Jeremy Martin on his second National Championship, this is the first time since 1979 that a Yamaha racer has taken back to back titles. Our Minnesota racers are finally being recognized as some of the fastest in the country. Off-road business: So far numbers have been good for the Series. The events I have had the opportunity to race have been really fun. There’s still time to try one of these if you haven’t already. Hillclimb: The National was held in Eastern Ohio near the Virginia border. Our climbers comprised 20% of the entries, took 33% of the class wins, and 40 % of the top 3 positions. Impressive for a small population state that has half year winters. Another of Cipala family took rider of the year this year. It was Luke Cipala this year. Those boys really know how to ascend a hill fast. Congratulations to Bodie Oneil on his success as well. Great showing for MN riders. Lastly our annual meeting will be the beginning of December, this is the meeting in which submitted rules changes are voted on by the membership. We also vote officers and class representatives. Flyers will be mailed to all members with proposed rules changes and those that have volunteered for a position on the board. As always we will take nominations from the floor for all elected board positions. As always we encourage our members to attend and to hopefully get involved. We always need good volunteers to fill up all of our board positions. This is the most important meeting of the year. We should also have the 2016 schedule available. I hope to see most of you there. Mike

Jackson Lindberg won three classes in Cambridge.

CYCLE USA, October 2015

Lindberg brothers top Cambridge Combined, they take six wins at the Short Track Cambridge, Minnesota - August 15 By Tim McBride

T

he North Central Dirt Track Association hosted round five of the AMA District 23 dirt track series on the Isanti County Fairgrounds ¼ mile oval where Jeremiah Lindberg and his younger brother Jackson Lindberg topped six classes between themselves. Jeremiah Lindberg kicked off his day of dominance in the 250/450A class by scoring a wire to wire win ahead of a resurgent Dan Jacobson, Nate Minster and the rest of the eight rider field. The Open A class saw Jeremiah out front for much of the main event with Minster and Sam Hoffmiester in tow until the main event came to an abrupt halt when Travis Henrichs crashed heavily in turn three. Henrichs was later diagnosed with a severely broken right foot. Tony Hauer and Rick Waschek rounded out the top five positions of the ten rider field. Jeremiah also won the highly competitive Pit Bike main. Not to be outdone, Jackson Lindberg also scored a hat-trick by winning the Supermini, 80cc Open and the Beginner Open classes in convincing fashion. The Old-Iron department saw Eric Brouhard out front by a bunch in the +50 main event until Lee Fealy piloted his “Stanchfield Steamer” past Dave Darsow and Randy Thistle for second. Fealy began to pressure Brouhard as they broke away from the field. Brouhard held on to score a narrow victory. Both riders were competing on what is now considered vintage Rotax framers.

#10 Ryan Bruggeman and #21 Andrew Wendorff battle closely in the Pro/Am Quad main event.

The Quad ranks saw Ryan Bruggeman winning the Open A and premier Pro/Am classes, but his victories did not come easy. The Open A final saw a good three way battle between Bruggeman, Andrew Wendorff and Justin Berhow. Berhow’s ride came to an abrupt end when the tierod on his machine broke while negotiating turn two at speed. Fortunately, Berhow and his quad bounded off the track without serious incident. Bruggeman eventually garnered the win over Wendorff, Nick Allen and Mark Olson. The Pro/Am main event saw a very close battle between Bruggeman and Wendorff go the distance with Bruggeman narrowly scoring his second win of the day. Berhow and Allen finished third and fourth.

In the 85Jr class, however, Moran topped the hill in 4.636 seconds on his KX85 to take the first round lead over Aliprandini and his 4.959 second run on his KTM65. Moran was even faster on his second ride with a class winning 4.262 second ride, while Aliprandini crashed trying to catch him. In other youth action, Brady Ronco climbed 78 feet on his KTM50 to take the 50cc class win ahead of Kody Groth who was second on his Honda 50 with a 55 foot effort. ‘Little Fast Andy’ Fortner was the fast guy in the 85Sr class with a 3.724 second first round time on his CR85, beating Johnny Boneau Jr, who carded a 4.057 run on his KX85. Fortner’s time was also good for the Youth Fast Time of the Day. The Wheelwright family also enjoyed a double win night, as dad Eric took the 250cc class win ahead of Levi Peters and Denver Lumberrs, while daughter Morgan was fast lady, taking the Women’s class win ahead of Emily Schultz. Wade Schultz won Open, Senior and set the Fast Time.

T

he Cahokia Creek Dirt Riders hosted their last hill climb of 2015, with ‘Wild Wade’ Schultz, Mitch Moran and Mike Pulver claiming double class wins. Schultz claimed his first win in the Open class on his big GSX-R Suzuki, with a 2.891 second time on his first ride. That time was good for the Fast Time of the day to that point, but he beat it himself in second round riding with a blistering 2.791 on his big four banger to win the Senior (+40) class. He actually had to come from behind for that win, as veteran Mike Pulver turned in a 2.873 second time on his first ride on his CR500 to take the class lead and Fast Time into intermission. Schultz had posted a 2.900 second first round run. Eric Wheelwright was third with a 3.026 second run on his YZ250. Pulver claimed his first win in the Super Senior (+50) class with a very good 3.013 run on his first ride on his Honda. Tom Rollins was second in 3.632 seconds on his CR500 while Mark Dunbar took third 8

on his Kawasaki in 3.704 seconds. Pulver then switched to a stock length CR500, and topped the hill in 3.207 seconds on his first ride in the Open Stock class. That time held up for the win, with Mike Wargo his closest challenger with a 3.372 second time on his YZ450F. Stephen King was third, just a tick behind with a 3.384 second run on his CRF450. Mitch Moran took his wins in youth action, his first in the 65cc class with a come from behind run of 4.486 seconds on his RM65 to overtake Jaydn Aliprandini, who had taken the

Dan Groth with son, Kody who finished second in the 50cc class.

Perfect day in Wittenburg

A

s summer winds down and families get ready to send their kids back to school, the vibe in the pits was that no one is ready for summer to end. It seemed to go by way too quickly this year, so we all were excited for two days of racing. As was the case, the Wittenberg D16 double header saw around 250 entries each day. On Saturday, in Open A, Brady Schernick and Austin Hamburger were trying to come away with the start and pushed Nate Laporte and Kyle Hameister wide in turn one. Schernick and Hamburger were running strong out front but it didn’t take long for the pressure to mount. At the end of lap one Laporte got around Hameister and those two 10

and gave Laporte an honest run. Kyle Ahola also made some nice passes and moved his way into third during the moto. At the checkers it was Laporte, Hameister and Ahola top three. Moto two saw all the racers battling hard once again. It’s fun to watch this class navigate this track because you can find subtle lines that are lower or less bumpy and that can give you the edge. Again we saw Laporte and Hameister quickly making work of the pack and stretching it out over the competition. Hamburger and Ahola battled third, with Schernick rounding out the top five. At the checkers it was Laporte who took home the overall, so you could say he knows how to find those lines and hold it on a little longer. 125Jr saw Carter Biese dominate on his Husqvarna backed bike. He was solid up front, going 1-1 and getting the overall. Desirae Steier and Marco Gravedoni battled both motos for the runner-up honors. Bailey Otis and Jonah

Dowd were also in the mix. Steier took second in moto one over Gravedoni and Otis with Dowd rounding out the top five. In moto two, Otis had bike problems and was forced to retire from the moto. Steier and Dowd were chasing Gravedoni throughout the moto, but Gravedoni held on to second. Steier went 2-4 for third and Dowd’s 5-3 gave him fourth overall. Brody Gallagher was consistent with a 6-5, putting him in the top five. Mini 65 7-11 had thirteen little rippers lined up to do battle. Elijah Tetzlaff put himself in a great position to win the class with good starts in both motos. Brothers Justin and Jackson Oehlhof like the challenge of racing each other in the same class. In moto one the brothers were running second and third behind Tetzlaff. Easton Block and Deegan Vanvreede rounded out the top five. Moto two again saw Tetzlaff in command and riding great out front. Justin Oehlhof had competition from Ayden Price

charging hard and made the pass into second over Anderson late in the race. Tyler Kalies ran in fourth ahead of Sam Forstner. Moto two saw Biese get out front and distance himself from the others. This time Cole Godfrey who had a dnf in moto one was running top five with Anderson, Tetzlaff and Reed Klinger. At the checkers, Biese wrapped up the overall and Anderson who had steady 3-3 scores gave himself second overall ahead of Tetzlaff. Forstner finished fourth overall and Josh Bowman rounded out the top five. The fantasy moto crew had the track in prime condition all weekend, as mother nature was pleasant leading up to the race and throughout the weekend, finally. The track nice ruts and braking bumps throughout. This track has a nice flow to it and is very rider friendly for all classes. The day ended well, and everyone was already looking forward to more of the same come Sunday.

this moto, who took sixth in moto one. Block and Vanvreede were racing hard and keeping the leaders in sight and staying in the top five. At the checkers, Justin Oehlhof was steady with his 2-2 scores. Easton Block and his 4-4 put him on the box for third overall. Price rode great in moto two to finish third and his 63 scores gave him fourth overall. Desirae Steier, using her prowess from battling in 125JR was the women to beat in Women’s class. Doing the triple on the front straight, and ripping her 125 let her have a healthy lead both motos over the others. Sierra Heindl and Kendra Randrup swapped positions in the motos with Randrup going 3-2 and Heindl 2-3. Chardae Tovar ran solid both motos for fourth just ahead of Kendra Tutt. 85cc 9-13 has been action packed all year and this weekend was no different. Jordan Biese was quickly out front in moto one with Hayden Anderson and Elijah Tetzlaff giving chase. Anderson was on the gas trying to keep the pace, but Biese was putting in solid laps gapping Anderson by mid moto. Tetzlaff also was

ond lap in both motos, the order was set. Lonny Brown had his hands full with Tim Boblin behind, as they finished 1-2. William Ziesk and Richard Crothers represented the IL riders well, going 3-4 in both motos. This was another nice sized class, with over twenty riders leaving the gate. Madison, WI’s Justin Fluger jumped out to lead the +30B class, with Kristopher Dubiel immediately putting pressure on. Jeremy Braund was in third early, before dropping out of the race. As the second lap ended, Casey Kloepping was in third with Neil Carlson fourth. A lap later, and Fluger was bumped back to second by Dubiel, and Kyle Vanderwerff was on the move, passing Carlson for fourth. Fluger tried as he could to re-take the lead, but to no avail as Dubiel grabbed the checkers. In moto two, Fluger once again took the early lead with Dubiel behind. This time, he opened a lead that Dubiel

couldn’t close, and took the win and overall. Vanderwerff picked it up and finished third, as Kloepping crossed in fourth after getting by Carlson. +25A class winner Ty Tyrrell after the second moto, “I won the first moto after not getting a good start and having to pass a lot of guys. This time I pulled the holeshot, and it was a lot easier. The track is good all over, and I’m looking forward to tomorrow for sure.” Daniel Holbus had a good fight to wrap up second overall (2-3), having to fend off Tyler Smulders, Scott Zont, Brad Behrens and Chris Lazzaretto, among others. A younger group of riders joined the Vet group today, in a +18 age classes. In +18B/C, Zachery Wolf won both motos. In the first moto, it was Jake Smith and Matthew Gabrielse running 2-3. In the second outing, Daniel Kraemer made up for a first moto eighth, by finishing second, ahead of Smith.

CYCLE USA, October 2015

The +18A class was fast today, as a few very quick riders were on hand to get some extra track time before the Pro-Am/ D16 points event on day two of this weekend. In their first moto, Ty Tyrrell led Austin Das and Timmy Baake through the first lap. It was all about to change though, as the very fast Cody Williams was here for a rare appearance, and quickly working from a mid-pack start. Latitude Graphics/ Factory Connection/ Fly/ Rock River backed Williams after the moto. “I got a bad start, and everyone is riding really well today. You can’t make mistakes like I did on the start. I worked my way around a few people, and caught Austin Das on the second lap. I just stuck it in the inside back in the sand and got by. I was trying to ride smart, and caught up to Ty and made the pass in the same spot as he went a little wide. I like the sand, and pulling the inside there when others may not feel as comfortable. The track is good, and getting some nice lines.” Williams took the win ahead of Tyrrell. Scott Zont on his Woodstock KTM pushed into third after Das slipped back into the pack with problems late in the moto. Das was on fire in the second moto... perhaps looking for redemption after drop-

ping back in moto one. Either way, he got out front, and slowly gapped the field. Williams made it into second quickly, and then led Tyrrell and Zont to the end. Williams with his 1-2 took the overall. What is a Vet race, without a good showing of riders in a Sixty Plus class? We didn’t have to worry about that today, as a dozen +60 riders left the gate on this special day. Local rider Allen Brhely jumped out front after the first turn, closely followed by Greg Mellinger and Harold Gooch. Those three stayed close through the first three laps, as John Dubiel ran in fourth ahead of Indiana’s Charles Koch. A lap later and both Edward Mehring and Dave Antolak had slipped by Koch for fifth and sixth. Up front, the three were still tight going into the last lap, when Brhely’s armor cracked, and both Mellinger and Gooch slipped by, dropping him to third. The second moto saw the same front runners, with Brhely leading. On his rear fender from the first corner, and doing all he could, Gooch was fighting for the win. The overall would be determined by who won this moto, as Mellinger was back a little, in third. It came down to the final hairpins, as Brhely and Gooch headed down the finish-line straight side by side. Rob’s Performance backed Brhely after the moto, “Harold (Gooch) wore me down. It was the last corner and I went outside, and he just tucked right under me for the win. I had a riot out there. I led almost the entire moto. It was fun, and it was great riding all day. You simply couldn’t ask for more out of a day. Great riding with a great bunch of guys on a fun track.” With Gooch taking the moto win, he picked up the overall. Mellinger’s 1-3 was good for second overall, as Brhely had to settle for third (3-2), not that it seemed to matter to him, he had “fun” regardless. Dubiel and Mehring finished 4-5 again. The day ended on a high note for sure... beer was flowing from the lower level food stand, the pit racing was in wide open mode, and everyone had smiles on their faces. With great weather, a great track, and a bunch of fantastic racing, this was a totally fitting day for this event. An event dedicated to the memory of the late Mike Gaborsky, best known for his time through the Torque Center and here at the Aztalan Cycle Club. There are a lot of great moments in this sport... today, many, many more were created by a group that all refer to the others riders as “their friends”.

The always happy Jeffrey Moehrke before the Dual Shock class start.

Casey Kloepping won the first +40B/C moto, and finished second overall, there and in +35B/C. CYCLE USA, October 2015

acing at Spring Creek Motocross Park is always a treat, no matter what form of competition is on the docket on any given day. On August 30 2015, the docket was filled with Round 8 of the AMA District 23 Hare Scramble series. Several Millville MX regulars will jump at any chance to ride at the facility. Even if it means that they will have to dodge trees and endure massive handlebar width ascents and decents through the trees and bluffs, for which John Martin and his crew are notorious for providing. The trail crew had to scramble on the three days before the race to make a raceable course, as on Thursday, the local sheriffs dept., and the MN DNR showed up with a "concerned citizen" to inform the workers that they wouldn't be able to cross the road and the creek to get to the east side of the bluffs. The course Kristi Grote and Mary Schriener, with proved tricky for the little riders as heavy Schriener just gaining the edge at year's fog in the overnight hours left the grass end. This season is shaking up somewhat track very treacherous. No worries for the differently though. Schriener has worked

one event and raced four. Each time she competed this season she has emerged the victor. Kristi Grote has worked one event and raced six events thus far, finishing first twice followed by a second, two thirds and a fourth here at Millville. Due to attending more races, Grote leads the standings thus far. Amanda Johnson typically competes with the boys in the 2 hour B-Class. She has been noticeably absent in 2015, with Millville being her first race of 2015, so she elected to run with the Women. A decision that put her in second on the podium, stealing valuable points from Grote and setting up a showdown for the two remaining races. Johnson pulled an early lead with Grote and Schriener in hot pursuit. Also in the mix was Miranda Tweeton. At the end of lap one the order was Johnson, Schriener, Tweeton and Grote in fourth on her KTM 105. Tweeton and Grote held positions till the checkered flag. On the third and final lap, at around 4 minutes from the finish, Schriener was able to sneak under Johnson for the win. A thrilling and suspenseful race to the checkers, for sure. In Open C racing, Oeslen Costa started slow, and just continue to build speed and positions. After four laps of racing, Costa went from fifth to first, methodically picking off riders to claim top prize. Matthew Meyers held the point for three laps before succumbing to Costa's march to the front. Zack Wobbe remained in third place for the entirety of the race. An upset in the making was brewing in the Vet B class. Class leader for the season Jason McCoy has won four times this year and the points lead over Jerry Costello. Here, in his only race of the year thus far, Yamaha mounted Andrew Haglof came out and served notice that when he races, he is a force to be reckoned with. VonEye each have only raced one other time in 2015 Hare Scrambles, but all three podium finishers just came out of nowhere to garner hardware. Jason McCoy could only muster a fourth place finish. Dan Illies was putting on the moves like "Grand Master Flash" in the Open A class. He was setting a pace that had him finishing tenth overall in the race. Riding fast and loose, "Gas Can Dan" (funny story, how he got that nickname) put a minute on second place Mitch Watson of Team Northstar Off-Road in the first lap. By the time the five lap fracas ended, Illies had two minutes over Watson and third place Blake Raskovich on a Yamaha. In AA, with the absence of class contender Dan Robin at Millville, brother Jerry Robin (super fast D23 MX racer) came out to carry the family torch. No slouch on the track or in the woods, Robin led the first three laps of the race. There

The charge through the first turn with #63 Nate Ferderer and #456 Nick Swenson.

was expected to be an epic battle with Robin, class leader and multi time former champion #2 Dylan Debel, and current D23 Hare Scrambles Champ, Nate Ferderer on his GasGas. This race was supposed to be a warm-up for the F.I.M. Six Day Enduro in Slovakia, for Ferderer, who was tapped to represent the United States. Unfortunately, on the first lap

Ferderer spun the rear tire and pop the bead, ending his day on the trailer. That left Debel on his Osseo Motorsports/ CheckPoint Off-Road Honda CRF450 to battle it out with Jerry Robin on his YZ450, and Matt Stavish on his CheckPoint Off-Road Honda CRF. Heavy hitters indeed. For the first three laps, watching Robin and Debel battle it out

with Stavish only a few second behind was great. The pace was taking a toll on Robin however, as he was conditioned to do 4-5 lap motos, but by the time he came through the scoring loop at the end of lap four, he had been hanging on tight at 100% for one and three quarter very intense hours. The pace was exacting it's pound of flash (literally) as Robins hands were blistering so severely that he couldn't continue. As he pulled off, it was easy to see that Robin was in excruciating pain. He couldn't even grip the bars anymore. That left Debel out front all alone, with Stavish 1.5 minutes back in second and Adam Barlow coming from fifth to third, at the flag.

With some last minute scrambling by the trail crew, Spring Creek MX Park put another very successful Hare Scramble event into the history books. Tigerton’s Battle of Wisconsin Tigerton, Wisconsin, August 29-30 By Doug Forstner, Photos by Kaila Forstner

T

he first annual Battle of Wisconsin was Scott Biese’s “pipe dream” to promote an event in Wisconsin and make it different yet successful. The vision was to host a supercross race on Saturday night under the lights and then a motocross race on the Fantasy Moto track Sunday. The process to pull this event off was daunting, but they were up to the task and definitely delivered. The weeks leading up to the event, Scott got to work and built a brand new supercross track next to the mx track that was already in place. He also ordered up nice Battle of WI awards, victory bottles of sparkling grape juice, and built a podium stage just like they use on the pro circuit. BOW Champions would be awarded on their overall finishes after the two days of racing. Not sure how much sleep he got leading up to the event, but that didn’t seem to matter to him. “I just want a special event for all the racers in Wisconsin so they can experience a big time event, and if all goes well, eventually Vet B/C winner Tom Ferguson with the spoils of winning. it will turn into a popular venue just like Kropidlowski had finishes of 5-3 to take reward of riders having a good day. Thirteen riders lined up at the gate and it was Josh Philbrick with the moto one holeshot and early lead. Vaughn Mays and Kyle Hameister were mixing it up in the top five, and Austin Das who made the trip up from Wonder Lake IL had his hands full with Cody Williams who had to work through the pack. Just past halfway point, Williams raced past Das into second place. Williams then went after Philbrick and stalked him like a hunter after his prey. At the fifteen minute mark, Williams made his move into the lead. Mays was running fourth just behind Das. On the final lap, Williams made a small bobble allowing Philbrick to take back the moto win. Das finished third, as Hameister got fourth after just beating out Mays. Moto two was the last moto of the weekend, just when the track was good and rough for the A riders. It pretty much also was the hottest part of the day, and it was time to for some high flying action. Philbrick was on a mission and he wanted to win the Battle of Wisconsin badly, and in the second moto he put his Suzuki out front and kept it there to the end. Das was able to get the runner-up spot and his 32 got him the silver medal beating out Williams’ 2-3 for the bronze. At the end of the day when everyone packed up and headed home, the Fantasy Moto crew still had a bunch of work to do cleaning up and planning how to make the second annual Battle of Wisconsin even bigger for 2016! It was a great two day event, and my guess is it will grow even further next year. Nuke Season Ending Weekend Byron Illinois, Sept. 5th/ 6th By Josh Rud, more photos at www.ShiftOnePhotography.com

T

his past weekend the fifth and sixth of September was the final 2 rounds for Motosports Park’s Nuke Series. The weekend ran a little different than usual, with a three moto format counting as round nine and ten in the series points. Saturday the first two motos were ran with some entertainment that evening, including a band and a lot of fun for everyone. On Sunday the last moto was ran in the morning and then we went directly into the end of the year awards and banquet. This format worked out great with everyone staying around to receive their awards with a shortened day. Saturday started out pretty muddy with a lot of water being put down overnight and a literal 0% chance of rain, and some freak showers in the morning started things out pretty sloppy. By the end of the day however the track was in beautiful shape. It was a cool two day weekend with a lot going on. One thing that was in full use this weekend was the addition of transponders and live trackside timing that you would find at Loretta’s. This will be a big part of the program next year, and makes it nice when you can literally check your lap times from your cell phone after the race is over. There was a lot of great racing with some of the championship classes coming down to the last moto to determine the victor for the year. 250C is always a big class, and again today putt on some close racing. In the first moto Apollo Mbuki who is here from Kenya training with club 57 took the win followed by Hunter Schueller and Andrew Mueller Jr. The gates

dropped for the second moto with Schueller grabbing the holeshot as the entire group was bunched up behind him. Mbuki was close in the chase with Steven Minkus holding off the pack in third. Coming around the sweeper, Mueller got back into the action to take over third. On the third lap Mbuki got an inside line on Schueller coming up to the finish line to take over the lead with Mueller now holding off Minkus as they battled for third the rest of the race. At the line Mbuki took the win followed by Schueller and Mueller. On Sunday the last moto finished off with Mbuki sweeping the class and the overall, Schueller put it across for second in all three motos, Mueller didn’t come back for Sunday’s race which put Minkus in third overall 4-5-6 through the weekend. It was a big weekend for the Quads getting a chance to run out on the main track. For those that haven’t been to Motosports Park, there are two tracks running every day with the hilltop track running quads and 50’s, and the lower track running everything else. Today everyone including the 50’s were down on the main track. In Quad C, thirteen riders lined up for some exciting action on the big track. In the first moto Cyler Jackson took the win followed by Reed Rakowska and Chris Dottore. With the track drying out nicely the second moto got underway with Jackson jumping out front for the holeshot followed up Calvin Richards and Dottore. Hitting the first turn under the announcer’s tower Rakowska snuck on the inside and jumped up into second with Richards and Dottore now swamping places as they hit the table top. Jeremiah Stearns

Eddie Norred, Zennon Shain and Mitchell Malaney topped the talented group in the Supermini class.

Provenzano took second giving him second overall and Feuillerat was third, and third overall even with a sixth place in moto one. The weekend was great, despite a soggy start Saturday. With Saturday having to change the layout due to some puddles and Sunday bringing back a layout I only seen once last year, using a different approach at the top of the track it made things interesting for sure. The track underwent a lot of changes through the season and things are certainly looking great. The three moto format was a great way to the end the weekend, collimating with the awards at the end. There were some great giveaways, great food, and a good time for everyone that made it out. The 2015 Nuclear series came to a close, but there’s still several events going on at the track this year. Time is flying by, so catch a final race to close out your season.

Megacross continues to Impress Mendota Illinois, September 12 By Josh Rud, more photos at www.ShiftOnePhotography.com

egacross was underway once again in the middle of September with some great racing action. The weather is certainly starting to tell some tales of summer coming to close. Later in the evening it was below 50, which of course in the Midwest is nothing new, but it started to remind me what is on the way. The track was in great shape, and with some cloud cover and the low temps, no maintenance was needed as the track shaped up with quite a few good options for passing. It made for some excellent racing. One of the great races tonight came from the 250A riders. The gates dropped to Cody Vanbuskirk making his first appearance at Megacross this year, jumping out to the lead with Kyle White and Tommy Hofmaster closing in fast. Heading into the whoops, Logan Skaggs came flying almost half way through them

off the first jump to take over third, but it was short lived. Hofmaster took over third two turns later. The lines were forming up great with everyone nailing corners and putting on a great show. Heading through the front set of whoops Vanbuskirk and White both went high as Hofmaster stuck his MXStuff4U Yamaha on the inside and nailed it to pass them both over the triple. Vanbuskirk and White were going after each other the entire race, reminding me a lot of them coming out of Erik Utech mixed it up in both 250 and Open A. Arenacross fighting, in right behind him. front got really close. The rest of the race it was anyone’s game with Mackenzie and Barnes going toe to toe in every corner. They put in a lot of work, but Mackenzie came away with the win. Barnes grabbed second and Stocklen held onto third to round out the podium. Megacross was a great show tonight and the track was awesome as ever. I talked with several riders that were all really excited on how the lines were forming all night. With the season coming to a close and the weather starting to make us all aware it will be over soon, things couldn’t be going better. With one race left out at Megacross it will surely be a great night as everyone will be trying to get in those last rides before the snow swallows everything around us.

he Central Illinois Motorcycle Club ran its last weekend doubleheader of 2015, with Troy Camerer and the father-son Peters team emerging as top riders. Camerer was a triple class winner, as well as claiming the overall fast time award Saturday night. His first win came in the 450cc class where he came from behind Cody Jenner in the second round to win the class with a 3.895 second time on his Suzuki. Jenner had taken the first round lead on his KTM, and improved that with a 4.047 second ride in the second round, but had to settle for second place. Camerer’s time was also good for the Fast Time of the Day award. Matt Peters was third on his KTM. Camerer’s second win came in the 400cc Stock class, where his first round ride of 4.025 seconds on his Suzuki held up for the win. Veteran Mike Pulver was a close second in 4.200 seconds on his Kawasaki with Honda mounted Jon Creek third. Camerer capped his triple win

evening in the four stroke Quad class, ahead of Derek Valstad. Both father Matt and son Levi Peters claimed triple wins at the Sunday part of the weekend, with Matt duplicating Camerer’s Saturday feat by adding the Fast Time award to his total. The Sunday event was the District 17/ Illinois Championship race, so the Peters boys emerged as triple State Champions! They each claimed five class wins for the weekend, as they were double class winners Saturday. Matt grabbed his first Sunday win in

the 450cc class, also coming from behind to beat Cody Jenner who had taken the first round lead with a 4.137 second run, with Peters in third and Mark Dunbar second. Matt’s second ride of 3.963 was good for the win, with Mark Dunbar in second with a 4.101 time. Jenner’s second round ride was nearly identical for his first, and he slipped to third place. The 600cc Four stroke class was nearly a repeat of the 450cc, as Jenner took the first round lead, with Peters in fourth, with Camerer second and Bobby Senn third. But Peters really turned it on in second round, flying his KTM over the top in a sizzling 3.678 seconds to not only take the class win, but also the Fast Time of the Day award. Jenner was faster on his second ride with a good 3.776 for second with Camerer improving also with a 4.127 second effort, slipping to third. Peters took his final title in the Senior (+40) class. His first round run of 4.176 seconds had him in the lead at intermission, but Kawasaki riding Kyle Galloway put pressure on him in second round action, posting a 4.071 time. Peters responded with another sub-four second ride, taking his third state title of the day.

Levi Peters enjoyed a triple win Sunday. His first win came in the 125cc class, where he rode his Yamaha sporting the National #2 number plate. His 4.228 second time was good for the win, followed by Andrew Fortner and Clayton Hirsch. Levi followed his 125cc win immediately with another in the 200cc class, on his KX250F, with Brennan Sowarsh second. Andrew Fortner took the first round lead in the 250cc class with a 4.089. But Levi dialed it up on his CR250 in the second round, sailing over the top in 3.886 seconds for the win. Fortner had crashed hard in another class, breaking his collar bone, so didn’t get a second run, and Sowarsh slipped under him with a 4.024 second run for second place. Levi nearly added a fourth title in the 600cc class. Riding in the class for the first time, Levi claimed the win Saturday night, edging Jon Creek (3.990) and his dad, Matt (3.992). Levi came up short of the win Sunday, with a 3.777 second run, with Cody Jenner taking the win with a 3.762 second time. Jared McKay was third. Cody Jenner was also the winner in the one run winner take all King of the Hill class for the ten fastest riders of the day. Jenner won the award with a 3.705 second time, with Mike Pulver second in 3.756 seconds and Jon Creek third (3.817). In youth class action, ‘Little Fast Andy’ Fortner took the Youth Fast Time award Saturday night while winning 85Sr. He was a double class winner, also taking the

125cc win. He was unable to ride on Sunday due to his injury. Everyone wishes him a full and speedy recovery, and looks forward to seeing him next year. Brodie Bennett took the Youth Fast Time award Sunday, while winning the 85Jr class, as he did Saturday night. Kody Groth was the 50cc class winner both days and Lilah McGurer was the best of the 65cc class both days.

“Smagical Mauston, Wisconsin - September 12/13 By Kevin Huber

O

n September 12th and 13th the Wisconsin Observed Trials Association event was held on Noel Smage’s land near Mauston, Wisconsin. This year Noel was able to obtain the land next to his initial acreage, almost doubling the area to use for the event. A lot of work was done to clear out the new sections and open up a loop that eliminated two way traffic. The new land has more area that is not as steep, allowing better selection for lower class obstacles. The upper classes continued to have challenging sections and as Noel stated, their sections are “bold, not sugar free, caffeine free or low calorie.” The weather was great for the weekend,

and the rain the previous week helped make the traction in the loose hillsides better than it would have been if it were totally dry. Saturday night activities included a large bonfire and an opportunity to get your picture taken with Noel’s son, the eight time national trials champion Pat Smage. WOTA President Shari Huber was first in line to get her picture with Pat. As the season is nearly over there are still a few classes where the championship is too close to call. Noel Smage and Brad Villand keep swapping positons in the Champ class, and Luke Littlefield still has a mathematical chance. Ryan Rivenburgh and Will Check are within 1 point in the Expert class,

Intermediate class rider Fred Sassi.

erry Vestal claimed two impressive wins at the AMA Vintage National Championships on the 3/8-mile oval in Oshkosh, taking the 1960s Vintage 750cc win as well as the Hot Rod Multis win. Vestal now holds a commanding 150-92 point lead in the 1960s Vintage 750cc division, and sits three points behind point leader William Applegate, who skipped Oshkosh - in the Hot Rod Vintage Multis class. One hundred and fifty entries from eight states (including Florida and New York) braved the ominous weather forecast, and heavy overnight rains to sign up for the AMA Vintage National combined with multiple District 16 amateur divisions. The tacky racing surface offered multiple racing lines, and lap times over half a second faster than at the June event. The largest Vintage National class of the night saw George Patrick take the 1960s Vintage 250cc (brake-less) win on his Ducati. Tony Berger bested Patrick, John Lovas, and current point leader Stuart Wray in the heat race, but Patrick led Wray and Lovas home in the final. Patrick’s win moves him into third place in National points. Berger won the 1960s Vintage 750cc (brake-less) heat race over Dan Vrana and Vestal, but the order reversed in the final. In 1970s Vintage 250cc local rider Jim Kirschbaum won the heat race over Peter Desantis, and John Turnstall. The top three started the final in the same order, but Turnstall passed Desantis on lap two and took the lead on lap three to extend his National points lead. In 1980s Vintage 750cc action, John Hundertmark came out of retirement to win the heat race over Trey Johnson, Don Lupi and Dan Vrana, but Vrana took home the checkered in the final over Lupi. The Board Trackers had a triumphant debut with four 90-year-old machines racing in close quarters. Mike Lange grabbed

the lead off the rolling start, but gave way to Casey Ketterhagen as they came to the white flag. Kory Postotnik rounded out the podium. Parker Lange bested Michael Van Langen in the 505cc Modern division, but Van Langen got the upper hand in Open Modern. Clayton Vonmoos and Clay Johnson finished 3rd and 4th in both. Christian Johnson led Brock Schwarzenbacher and Morgen Mischler into turn one in the Open Pro division, and the order remained static until the halfway flags. At the point Mischler began working the high line and passed Schwarzenbacher on lap four, and then seized on a slight bobble from Johnson to take the win on the final lap. Kyle Weise got the upper hand on Kyle Meiers on the final lap to claim fourth.

Kellogg’s Labor Day weekend Kellogg, Minnesota - September 6 MotoKazie Motocross

L

abor Day weekend delivered plenty of riding and racing at the popular Kellogg, MN facility. This was the last weekend of District 23 racing here for the season. An open ride on Saturday, then racing on both Sunday and Monday. Sunday was sort of like being at two different events. The morning was wet, with showers pushing through, making for some slippery conditions. By mid-day, the sun was out... it got hot, sticky, and the track continued to dry quite nicely. Amusing thing was that the umbrellas never got put away. Rain early, then the hot sun kept them out on the starting line all day. With temps in the low 90’s, this was potentially a last blast of real summer heat for us here in Minnesota. The light rain started right away in the first moto of the 85cc 9-12 class. Out of

#291 Joseph Trom and Nick Oeltjen battled in both motos of 14-24B.

Cameron Skaalerud rode to second overall in the 85 9-12 class.

the gate, two riders set a pace out front that the others couldn’t quite match. Cameron Skaalerud on his Kawasaki led Gavin Janovsky. Even as the track quickly was getting slick, these two never let up. In the second lap they were still fender to fender, and then Janovsky pushed past in the whoops. Shortly after, over the large Kong jump, Skaalerud re-took the lead. Behind them, Nolyn Hempel was running a solid third with Jaden Rolbiecki fourth. With two laps left, the leaders swapped spots two more times, before on the final lap, Janovsky put his KTM out front for good. In that same last lap, Timmy Kristiansen found his way past Rolbiecki to take over fourth. By the second motos... it was sunny, hot, and the track was quite improved. Again, Janovsky took off out front with Skaalerud on his tail. A lap later, and Janovsky had opened a small gap, and the two put in fast laps to the finish in that order. Hempel was in a solid third place all moto, riding really well. Seth Becker worked up to fourth, but on the last lap took a good tumble on the Kong jump - getting up to finish at the back of the pack. Kristiansen finished fifth ahead of Rolbiecki for the moto, and overall. The 250C class had twenty-one riders come off the gate as rain fell for the first moto. Getting a good start, then riding smart would be key... and Kasson, MN’s Matt Hendrix pulled it off. He sliced CYCLE USA, October 2015

under Payton Harrison in the first turn and held the lead over the first right hand jump. By mid-second lap he had a little breathing room over Harrison. Cody Wroe was riding well, and worked through the conditions to take over third, with Todd Miller and Jayden Leuth behind. In the last lap, Colton Steiger, who had been moving up most of the moto, took over fifth, just before the finish line, with Hendrix never faltering out front for the win. Hendrix after the win, “The track was pretty slippery, and a bit sketchy in some spots. It was a lot of fun though, but it was getting worse every lap. I was lucky, and kept it on two wheels all moto after the good start. I have three motos left today, so it is hopefully going to be a great day.” Everything changed in the second moto, as Hendrix found himself mid-pack at the end of the first lap. Out front, Colton Steiger had his Kawasaki singing, under the gun hard from Harrison. As they started the third lap, Austin Kristiansen had worked up to third, after a rough first moto where he finished eleventh. On the last lap, Hendrix took over fifth, behind Wroe. Steiger (5-1) held off Harrison for the moto win, but Harrison’s consistent 22 motos scored the overall win! Steiger, “I was second in the holeshot and got next to Hendrix (first moto winner) in the whoops and he went down. From there I just rode hard to win. Today was good, even though this morning was really rainy. I just wanted to stay up in the

mud. Now you can really race, and it is a lot more fun. I’d like to thank my parents for all their help!” The +30C riders combined with the +50 class, coming off the start in a single gate drop. Out front through the first lap, Mazeppa, MN’s +50 class rider Brad Erickson was staying nice and clean, forcing the younger riders to fight to get past... if they could even keep up. +30 rider Adam Guberud closed the gap in the second lap, and after eating a bunch of roost from Erickson’s Honda, made a pass before running out of tear-offs. From there he stayed out front for the win. Erickson rode in second overall to the end, with fellow class rider Jack Parenteau not far behind, and Gary Behrens in third. Rochester, MN’s Shane Clark led Gerritt Clark across the finish line for second and third in +30C. The second +30C moto saw Guberud sweep another win for the overall

Stang through the first lap in Schoolboy 12-16. They were side by side as they went out of sight into the track’s back section. Back a little, Kole Lemcke and Austin Nelson were locked in an equally close battle. As they all came back into view, Boaz was all alone, and Stang had fell back to fourth, already riding hard to make up time. Boaz rode a #88 Kayla Streeter, #22 Cassandra flawless moto for the win on Hall and #40 Brooklyn Peterson in his KTM, and Stang didn’t a combined Girls class first moto. let the conditions keep him from being aggressive, as he worked back up to second. Lemcke got the best of his fight with Nelson for third, with Todd Miller finishing fifth. There’s still something really cool about hearing these kids rip around the track on their two-strokes! The second moto was a thriller as Stang led Boaz by less than a bike length from the gate, right to the start of the last lap. Boaz after the

ahead of Gerritt Clark, that got the better of Shane Clark in the now more dry conditions. In +50, Erickson repeated with another win ahead of Parenteau. Randall Ross stepped it up for third this time, dropping Behrens back to fourth. With the sun peaking out, Josh Boaz got a great jump off the start to lead Devin

moto, “I was behind Devin all moto and really trying. On the last lap he slid out and I passed him. He came right back, and almost got me by the finish line, so it was really good. I’d like to thank my Mom, Dad, Pro-Taper, Bell Leatt, Answer, KTM, Lifetime Fitness and 100%.” As Stang had to settle for second, Nelson beat Lemcke this moto, and it was good for third overall. Continuing with the two strokes.... 125cc 12+ had another good race with Kole Lemcke holding off Austin Nelson through every lap, to take the win. Alec Muller finished the moto in third, ahead of Tyrell Williams Lemcke, “It’s getting slippery on the faces of the jumps. My moto went well, as I took first place. It was big just to stay calm, and keep the bike up after getting a good start. I’d like to thank my mom and dad, as well as Tom Craig Racing for all the support. I’m a regular here, and it would suck if there isn’t racing here next year. This is a good track so I hope someone works something out to run it.”

Geovanni Bustamante gets ready for his second moto in the 50cc 7-8 class.

In the second moto, Nelson took over out front, and never looked back, he had to know it was Lemcke on his rear fender. The two were close, but Nelson rode a super clean moto, taking the win, and overall as a bonus (2-1). Seth Carpenter improved on his first moto fifth, to finish third this time, good for fourth overall behind Muller (3-4). Josh Harens won the first +40A moto ahead of Richard Ziebell and Darwin Frideres. Harens after the moto, “It went pretty good for me. I’m a little heavier than some of the guys, so that works to my advantage on a track like this. Big thing was getting in front so you don’t get roosted all the time. I like the mud, but now I have to go wash it (the bike) and then do it all over again. I’ve been racing here since ‘89, and my wife has been racing here since the early ‘80’s, so we have been here a long time. I really hope someone can manage the track to keep it open in the future. Things are tight for a lot of people, and having this here as a place to ride is really important.” Harens repeated in the second moto, ahead of Brad Cunningham. With Cunningham not making the first moto, it left the door open for Steve Annen to go 4-3 for second overall, as Ziebell finished back in fifth (2-5). Thirteen riders came off the gate in the first 65cc 7-11 class moto, a dozen following Garret Becker on his Kawasaki. Half way into the opening lap, and he still had a couple bike length lead over Riley Rainer and Ethan Rennie. The order held for a couple laps, but then Rainer found some extra speed as Becker made a small mistake. Rainer took over out front, and then pulled some on the last lap for the big win. As Rennie held solid in third, Brodie O’Connor took over fourth and finished with Jackson Maalis right on his rear fender. In moto two, Jordan, MN’s Luke Geis made his way into the lead ahead of Becker to take the win, after not finishing the first moto. Becker’s 2-2 scores put him in first overall, just edging out Rainer who settled for fourth, after that first moto win. Rennie had another good moto, finishing third for third overall. As we got late in the first set of motos, the Open C class had a dozen riders looking for fame, and it looked like the rain may have pushed out for the day. Payton Harrison was all over Austin Kristiansen in the first lap, but dropped back a few spots after sliding out in a corner. From there, Kristiansen rode just fast enough to keep a small lead over Nate Myers and Colton Exner. Star Cycle/ Motokazie backed Kristiansen after the moto, “One of my buddies went down in a corner early on, and it gave me a comfortable lead. The track is still a little slippery, and now getting a bit rough as well.”

Redwing, MN’s Marcus Koester in the 250Jr class.

With Kristiansen running out front, Harrison was left to work his way back from falling. It took him into the last lap, but he got past Exner for third, as Seth Carpenter finished fifth on his KTM. Payton Harrison was riding well all day, and in his final moto, it all came together. Beating both Kristiansen and Myers, he took the second Open C moto win for second overall. Kristiansen walked away with the overall yet, but it just goes to prove how close these riders are out there. Sunday’s race closed out with the sun shining, and many riders looking forward to day two, on Monday. What looked pretty ugly in the morning, turned around and became another fun day at the races for the riders, and spectators as well. We already know this was the final race weekend of the season here at Kellogg MX. Even more on the minds of many riders was the potential fact that this could be the final weekend of racing “ever” at the facility. The track has been managed by Minnesota’s popular Motokazie team, but they are needing to make some adjustments going into 2016, and will not be running the facility. Motokazie’s Lee Theis, “Running Kellogg MX has been rewarding over the past seven years. I have enjoyed the riders and families, as well as the challenge. While Motokazie will con-

tinue promoting Jordan, Mankato and fair events - I just don’t have enough time to continue with Kellogg. I look forward to enjoying the races on the other side of the fence.” Speaking with a couple very involved representatives from District 23, they were confident that races will continue here next season, as there were a couple parties possibly willing to get involved. We all hope so! Thank you Lee and everyone working with his team for running so many great events here over the years!!
