Learning To Let Go

Geoff Napier Dear Cygnus Readers, With the stunning autumn colours around us these last few weeks, how can we avoid accepting that everything has a time to bud, a time to flourish, and a time to gracefully let go, ready to begin preparing for the next cycle’s new opportunities? Cygnus is having another grand letting go, a thorough pruning. We have been given the opportunity of a fresh start, so we are moving. A New Beginnning We are so happy to be able to announce that Cygnus Books is joining the Watkins Media group. I shall continue to be part of Cygnus Books, choosing the titles and focusing on developing what you, the Cygnus Community want from us in order to help you grow inwardly, at a pace of your choosing. The Cygnus Review will continue to be sent quarterly to current subscribers only. As you know it has now become impossibly expensive to send out the magazine free to all members. Therefore, if you want to receive Cygnus Review in future please renew your membership to the Cygnus Community when it becomes due and remind your friends to join or renew theirs. Cygnus’ new home with Watkins Publishing is situated in Angel in the heart of London. By the time you read this Issue, Vicky Hartley and her team will be answering the phones and taking your orders while I will be helping the new team build our new customer care systems over the next few months. Please bear with us as we fumble our way through these changes. We have been knocked out of all our old familiar routines are learning strange new ways to meet your needs anew. Whilst on this subject of our move I am lost for words to adequately express my admiration and profound gratitude for the loyal Llandeilo team of Sue, Jayne & Jordan (on the phones) and Maew and Ta in despatch. Through all the ups and downs of the past years, they have looked after not only you, but me too. There have been times when honestly, I felt I

couldn’t be relied upon to tie up my own shoe laces, let alone give strong leadership and clear directions. Their patience, courage and determination to help nurture and support the Cygnus family, come what may, has been truly humbling for me. Thank you team, from everyone in the Cygnus Community and I thank each one of you from the bottom of my heart. It surprises me that, after 21 years of being in the Brecon Beacons, we are now migrating back to the south east of the UK where Cygnus began. So what is actually changing? As with all transformations, everything and nothing! The Watkins Publishing team are keen to learn what it is that Cygnus readers appreciate and would like to see in future magazines. This means that I will be dropping in to many of the local groups to participate in your shared spiritual journeys as well as to listen how you all would like Cygnus to develop. With the Watkins team behind us we have a great opportunity to start afresh, each group becoming a little nucleus for personal growth, and another beacon for the enlightenment of all which is happening in our world. From each local group we hope to distribute copies of our magazine into their wider communities. The café network has now grown to about 95 strong. Many groups are small and keen to welcome new Cygnus members and others, into their midst. If you have a group near you, just pick up the phone and find out the date of the next meeting. It is from these natural and unstructured groups that we can grow speedily beyond

our current beliefs and strengthen the light in a positive way. If there is no group in your area, please contact me so that we can start one up between us. Times are changing – the light is growing – play your part in it, as we move on, here at Cygnus and beyond. This current issue contains some old favourites such as Gardening & Planting by the Moon 2016 and the other diaries we have regularly featured. Look closely too at the our tailor-made diary Your Soul’s Journey by Demian Allen just for you, what a special gift! We are also introducing some new voices. Adam Gordon, who has chosen the books alongside me in this issue wrote our piece on the passing of Wayne Dyer (Page 3) he has also written many of the book reviews. Mary Daniels who, till recently has been a director at Alternatives in London shares with us her passion for living a life with integrity and the scrapes that can get us into! (Page 8) Sandy Newbigging has written an article that focuses on the healing rather than spiritual properties of meditation (page 13) In preparing this edition along with the Watkins team, I find it hard to pull out just one or two more titles ahead of the others nevertheless, two Cygnus Community members who are authors caught my attention. Maggie Tisserand with her book on how to beat MRSA with aromatherapy (yes, really!) and the new edition of Maggie Le Tourelle with her magnificent work researching new insights into Alzheimers. I am hoping that as more of you choose to (re)join the Cygnus Community we will be able to give more space to more groundbreaking work and new insights gained by members. We would like to start arranging events for Cygnus members to meet and share their work together. Would you like, for instance to come to a week long summer camp or would you prefer day-long meetings around the country? Let us know! Let us know what you think of this issue, what we can better! With Love from us all, from both teams in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire and Angel, Islington Geoff Napier

Dr Wayne Dyer (1940 -2015)

by Adam Gordon

I

t came as a terrible shock for me to hear about Wayne Dyer’s passing and of course I am not the only one. There must be a lot of us at Cygnus who can’t quite believe it. He was so reassuring, solidly present, and so effortlessly confident in the way that he presented his teachings and experiences. Even though he himself talked about the cardiac issue which could so easily have killed him several years ago……well, maybe it had been serious but it didn’t kill him and here he was, talking to us again, using the crisis as a teaching story and there was just a sense that he would always be close at hand, talking to us like this. It’s funny how Wayne Dyer changed his position within the book market, which is the one I happen to know. I remember seeing Your Erroneous Zones everywhere back in the day. It was one of the original self-help books. It was THE archetypal self-help book at the start of the mighty wave of personal development literature, which really came into its own in the early eighties. Then suddenly he showed his spiritual side. I started listening to some of his cassettes then – yes it was that long ago. There were the amazing presentations he did with his good friend Deepak Chopra. They seemed to have such fun together. I enjoyed hearing him more than anything. He just had a gift for making the listener feel reassured, that everything would be ok, that being on the spiritual path was the right thing to do. It was an amazing gift to his readers and listeners. I can only guess that it came out of his own hard-won wisdom, having lived in poverty in his early years in a fractured family with an absent father. I am sorry that this piece is so personal but I think that’s how people feel about him. If I had ever seen him in the queue for a cup of coffee, I know I could have spoken with him quite comfortably. He looked ordinary, not flashy or like a celebrity in any way. Even though he had earned all sorts of academic qualifications, that ordinariness is perhaps his greatest skill. He was like the neighbour next door, who had discovered something

new and could explain it accurately to us and who would even be able to offer advice whenever we had more questions about it. I was trying to work out why on one level Wayne Dyer meant more to me than almost any other author in this spiritual field, and it’s because his voice – whether on the printed page, on CD and DVD or live on stage – was like medicine. Just fifteen minutes of it and the anxiety, fear, uncertainty or doubt would evaporate. It was not just all his years of teaching and study that gave him that confidence; it was also the friendships and working relationships he had with other teachers

and mystics, who he learned so much from and whose teachings he then passed on so humbly and clearly. It must be so painful for his family and loved ones that he is no longer around. But if Wayne Dyer taught us one thing, it’s that the teachings go on. He was so sure about the life of spirit and was so skilled at communicating that conviction to the rest of us. The energy that was Wayne is still around and still just as strong – we Cygnus fans should know this for sure. After all that he has taught us, it would be utterly disrespectful (and self-delusional!) to think otherwise.

MEMORIES OF HEAVEN Dr Wayne Dyer & Dianna Hicks-Garnes Wayne Dyer has been the father to eight children and Dee Garnes the mother of two. Between them they recognized the power of the stories young children tell – of the time before they came to earth or of a previous time here – to give us comfort when we have lost our way, or guidance with regard to the bigger picture. And so they appealed for more such accounts. The response was overwhelming and here is a varied collection of the best of them. Some are just short moments of revelation while others tell stories of a child’s memories of heaven, recounted across sometimes months or years. It’s a book for dipping into, for parents to derive inspiration from and for all of us to refer to when life might seem a bit bleak and meaningless. It’s also a fine memorial to Wayne and all the work he has done. 248pp, 195mm x 130mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £9.99

Author The Power of Healing in the Light of New Scientific Insights Title CRYSTAL POWER, CRYSTAL HEALING, Michael Gienger Fascinated by stones and rocks as a child and a chemistry student at university, Michael Gienger began to specialise in the study of crystals in the 1980s. He set up unique science based research which clearly demonstrated that the healing properties of a mineral are dependent on its manner of origin, inner structure, mineral elements and the colour of each crystal. The original version appeared in 1995, since when study and teaching has continued, leading to this revised edition. A comprehensive handbook of modern research into the power of minerals generally and the qualities of individual crystals, it is beautifully illustrated with stunning photos from Agate to Zoisite. This is a book to study and treasure and is a fitting tribute to the pioneering work of the late Michael Gienger. 448pp, 213 x 140mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £18.99

AROMATHERAPY VS MRSA, Maggie Tisserand You don’t get a bigger name in aromatherapy than Tisserand, and in this book Maggie explores the rise of MRSA from treatable disease to life-threatening epidemic. Taking us on a whistlestop tour round the world to see the different treatment and prevention methods used around the globe I was surprised at the range of precautions ‘developed’ countries took. Delving then into the results of studies on the treatment of MRSA with different essential oils, I was surprised at the results and it was very interesting to see where these natural remedies could help contain and even combat the bacteria that causes MRSA. If you are about to head into hospital for treatment then this is definately worth reading ahead of time to make sure you maximise your chances of staying MRSA-free. 192pp, 216 x 138mm, Paperback, 2014, RRP £14.99

“As Alzheimer’s progresses, and more and more brain cells are destroyed, people lose their sense of self and their sense of linear time – past and future move into the present. When this happens people have intermittent altered states of consciousness in which they seem to slip into another world. I remember after Mum told me about the Other World she said, ‘I have no worries, no fears, I am at peace’. She also assured me, ‘Death is nothing to be afraid of’. She would never have been able to say these things before she had Alzheimer’s as she had been in a permanent state of anxiety. So what she experienced in the Other World was extremely beneficial to her and helped her to prepare for a ‘good death’. It was also very reassuring and comforting for me.” THE GIFT OF ALZHEIMER’S, Maggie la Tourelle Maggie La Tourelle’s story of her journey with her mother through late-stage Alzheimer’s reveals so much about what we can learn if we just pay attention. It also touched my heart strings as she described the way that she reconciled with her mother. But it is when Maggie translates for us the journey of her mother’s consciousness, from one world to the next, and the messages that she brings back that this book rises above other accounts of Alzheimer’s. This second edition has an additional large section that includes the latest research in the field and guidelines for those caring for someone with this disease. Such wisdom in such an unexpected place!

Author Adult Colouring

Title Amber Hatch

Colouring books: how to use them for spiritual growth You’ve probably come across the latest craze – colouring for grown-ups. With colouring books sitting on the top spots of the Amazon bestseller charts for the best part of a year, and stands in every bookshop and newsagent, it’s been quite hard to miss. Most of the colouring book titles make reference to some kind of art therapy, or the calm-inducing properties of colouring, or (most popular of all) to mindfulness. However, in virtually every case, when you open the book up, it is simply a colouring book. Doing mindfulness

to be invaluable in providing a backbone for my mindfulness practice. I also try to raise mindfulness whenever I remember, as I go about my daily tasks. I think of this second way as “moment-to-moment” mindfulness. The third way is a kind of half-way house between these two. I “attach” mindfulness to a particular activity, such as reading my son a bedtime story, or doing the washing up. Whenever I do these tasks, I try to bring my full attention to the activity at hand. So how exactly is colouring supposed to aid mindfulness?

Many people nowadays are aware of the concept of mindfulness, and would like to bring it into their lives, but they are not sure how. So the idea that colouring can help us do that is very appealing. But I need to be honest about this: it’s perfectly possible to colour unmindfully. Because the truth of the matter is that mindfulness does take a bit of effort. We can’t expect any activity – whether that’s colouring, or a flotation tank, or sitting in the lotus position – to do mindfulness for us. Mindfulness is something we have to practise ourselves.

Colouring can make an excellent choice for this kind of activity. When we sit down and pick up a pencil crayon, that probably means we have a little time to ourselves, free from interruptions. The repetitive nature of the task means that once you have chosen your colour, very little complex thinking is involved. This gives us an opportunity to slow down our busy minds (if we choose to use it!). The following paragraph is an extract from our book, Colouring for Contemplation:

Three ways to practise mindfulness

“Each time you notice that your thoughts have wandered away from the task, you can note where they are and then gently bring your attention back to the pen or pencil in your hand. Although this instruction is very simple, it can be

Maintaining mindfulness is not always easy. I’ve been practising Samatha meditation for six years, which emphasises a formal daily sit. I’ve found this discipline

Colouring as a meditation

difficult to follow. At first it can feel like an effort – you’ll be amazed at how active your mind really is. You may even find that several minutes go by before you realize you have lost awareness. Keeping the mind on task is rather like trying to keep a kitten in a basket: it keeps on climbing out. Remember to smile at its antics as you gently put it back.” A record of your journey One of the lovely things about using colouring as a meditational activity, is that once you have finished your meditation, you have a beautiful visual record of your practice. You may like to stick your handiwork on a wall somewhere where you can remind yourself of the qualities you have evoked. Meaningful pictures In our book, Colouring for Contemplation, the pictures themselves are inspired by quotations from some of the greatest thinkers and teachers around the world. The pictures and words interact with each other, helping to create new layers of meaning. By colouring the pictures, you too help to create the images as a visual representation of the words. I think that this gives an added depth to the colouring experience, and can help us evoke some of the positive qualities of the teachings in our meditation.

Masters of Wisdom LIVING DANGEROUSLY, Osho Osho, formerly known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, is one of the great cultural enigmas of recent decades. He came to fame in the 1970s and attracted many western followers. He started an intentional community in Oregon in 1981, which collapsed a few years later, and Osho himself was deported back to India where he passed away in 1990. The whole story was written off in the media as “free love guru attracts hippies to his cult but the whole thing implodes”, yet his books still sell. They really sell, and they are crystal clear and groundbreaking and insightful. What are we supposed to think? All I am saying is, read these introductory teachings; you might be surprised. 240pp, 197 x 125mm, Paperback, 2011, RRP £9.99

RADICAL WISDOM FOR A CHANGING WORLD, Gandhi This book about the great Mahatma carries a selection of his writings and speeches, and they have a completely different emphasis to Osho’s. They combine spirituality and political and social commentaries, and the spiritual teachings follow very much in the tradition of the Bhagavad Gita, while Osho urges us to rebel against such tradition. However, if we want to live like Gandhi, and make changes that just have one tenth of the effect of those he inspired in India, then this is a crucial primer on how, as Gandhi himself said, to be the change you want to see in the world. 240pp, 197 x 125mm, Paperback, 2012, RRP £8.99

INTRODUCING JUNG, Maggie Hyde & Michael McGuiness Carl Gustav Jung and his written works come up a lot in so many books about the spiritual life and personal transformation. Having started as a follower of Sigmund Freud, he broke with the great man, and went from there to become a pioneer in the world of the transpersonal. His life was also full of incident and amazing stories, which are succinctly brought to life in this pocket introduction. Jung’s ideas have transformed the world but the books themselves can be quite hard to understand. There is often a great willingness to learn from him but many readers get put off too quickly. This repackaged introduction to his life brilliantly encapsulates the fundamentals of his work using witty illustrations and clear charts. Looking to the Heavens MAGICIANS OF THE GODS, Graham Hancock Graham Hancock’s book Fingerprints of the Gods was published in 1995 and became a bestselling classic of the “alternative history” genre. Since then the author has written on several other related themes, but this autumn he has published this follow up, which is available in a generous hardback full of fascinating photographs. Hancock has so much more to tell and he has done his research and fieldwork with integrity. On one level we might feel a sense of anxiety that so many disruptive changes could be on their way but if there’s one thing we learn as Cygnus readers it’s that change is inevitable and that we must embrace it. It also confirms something else that many of us feel: that the history we are spoon-fed is only a mix and match version of the truth, and that the truth itself might be a lot stranger and more wondrous than any of us suspected.

GATEWAY TO THE HEAVENS, Karen L. French I have always been someone who has looked for meaning in everything around me. Ley lines, stone circles, the dimensions of a pyramid or the Fibonacci series – all of these fascinate me and help me to make sense of the world. This book brings all these phenomena together in a richly illustrated encyclopedia of the geometry and mathematical principles lying beneath the world’s outer fabric. It’s full of fascinating facts, ideas and theories that I hadn’t heard about before. It doesn’t go too deep into any possible esoteric explanations but anyone can take that up in further study: there is a thorough glossary at the end. It’s like a varied network of paths through the wood and the choices you make will always lead you to an interesting place. It could be seen as the full-colour user’s manual to accompany John Michell’s classic New View Over Atlantis and also an ideal gift for a spiritually curious friend who might be new to the esoteric world. 240pp, 246 x 190mm, Paperback, 2014, RRP £14.99

Mary Daniels When Geoff invited me to write this article for Cygnus review I was over the moon, what an honour I thought. Over the years, as I have slowly got to know Geoff Napier and the Cygnus community, I have come to see what a genuine space of wisdom, love, hard work and realness it is. As much as the term is thrown around, used in the values list of companies, and referred to as a good quality to have; what does it actually mean to live with integrity? In essence it is really about knowing yourself, being true to yourself and living your life in a way that reflects what that means. I am a 29/11 which (for any of you that aren’t that familiar with Dan Millman’s amazing numerology book ‘The Life You Were Born to Live’) means my life path is all about integrity and wisdom. However, the more I am learning about what it truly means to live with integrity, the more I am seeing the level of commitment that comes with being true to oneself. Being in integrity is more than just ‘speaking your truth’ I have often been told I am someone who has no problem speaking her truth and even hearing the truth (not entirely sure about that, my mentor has made me wince quite a few times!). But as lovely as that is to hear, that is not the whole picture of what it means to live with integrity. I have learned that living with integrity is more than just ‘speaking one’s truth’ it is about working out what you want for yourself, what brings you alive and brings meaning to your life, not just for yourself, but also in alignment to others and this planet because, in a very powerful way we are all connected. There are times when a good intention is just not good enough! Being in integrity has to be more than just a well intentioned thought or idea, it is about what we do, how we show up and most importantly how we clean up after the mess we sometimes leave behind when things don’t quite go to plan. So stating our intention is great but still the beginning, making that commitment to take responsibility for the choices we make also plays a big part.

8

Integrity: What it really means Living in integrity requires us to not only tap into our inner wisdom, but to act on it. Don’t be a wise fool. I always joke about how I often feel as if I am the wise fool in the playground, sometimes continuously going round and round the all too familiar merry go round of ‘same old’ ‘same old’. Wisdom is not something dormant that exists ‘somewhere within or outside of us’, nor is it something we inherit when we hit a certain age. It is an on-going process, a self-discovery journey of who we really are. The wisdom that is innately inside us all never goes anywhere, it is always there sitting quietly and patiently, waiting for the moment we are willing to see it, hear it and most importantly act upon it. Self-awareness is essential if we want live a life with Integrity. I have learned increasingly that our own Self-awareness is the only way we can live a life with integrity. If we don’t reflect and learn from past experiences and lessons, then every action we take is based on a stab in the dark or a lie. If we want integrity and wisdom to sit at the heart of what we do, then we need to embody it in every way. I have learned that in order for me to deliver on the promises I continue to make with myself, I not only need to increase

NEW

my level of self-awareness. I also need to keep going with my daily practice that shows me where and when I have crossed that very thin line of being in and out of integrity! So, what I am really saying is being in integrity is really all about knowing who you are and staying true to what that looks like for you. It needn’t be a heavy cross to bear or feel like an uphill slog, as long as you keep tuning into what you want, have the courage to follow your heart and are mindful of the impact your choices are having on yourself, others and the environment you live in!

WILD AWAKENINGS, Mary Daniels Anyone who knows Mary, for example in her former role as co-director at Alternatives in London, will have been inspired by her energy and positivity. This book, however, reveals the story of how she arrived at that place, and indeed how she saved her own life. Her unflinching account covers violent abuse, struggles with her weight and selfimage, and a moment one sunny morning when she is standing on Tower Bridge with her young child, ready to jump into the Thames below. Her breakthrough to genuine joy and fulfilment after so many horrific and harmful events in her life is inspiring, but just as importantly she is able to share with us the lessons she has learned along the way. Title New Insights Into Health & Consciousness

I ‘HEART’ ME, David Hamilton There’s a great quotation on the back of this book by bestselling author Pam Grout, which sums the book up perfectly: “Why is this not required reading? Why is this not the first book we’re handed in life? It definitely should be.” As David Hamilton says, this is about the science of self-love and it’s something you can learn. If you follow the exercises in this book, your levels of self-love will increase and then you will be happier. It’s as simple as that. Self-worth is in our genes but is trained out of us later in life. This book carries a set of training exercises in what Hamilton calls The Self-Love Gym, which will help bring it back. I like this book because it doesn’t carry easy platitudes but gives us tested techniques to reach that elusive state of self-love. NEW 264pp, 213 x 137mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £10.99

Yes, it rewires the brain to access your higher potential. All that DNA programming, ancestral baggage and upbringing fear that we held on to can be changed. The audios that come with the book work through energy waves of sound, enhancing the meditative state, and they then accompany the ongoing mindset changes. I used the audios to see the effects and changes that would occur, and as a Meditation Teacher I found that the sound current and words worked well with the grey matter in the brain. I felt calmer and able to handle day-to-day events in a calmer manner. As spiritual beings having a human experience it’s so important to nurture the spiritual body too. Marlise has an evolved awareness from her own healing process that led her to develop the SOS. THE LITTLE BOOK OF RESILIENCE, Matthew Johnstone I love this book. It has a way of communicating where you feel you are talking to a calm friend, who has been through it all before you. There are many other fantastic books, which guide the reader carefully through all the aspects of positive change. Matthew Johnstone though is a skillful illustrator and his clever pictures that lead this book forward can convey the equivalent of whole chapters of well-informed text, and I found them comforting and clarifying. For example, he doesn’t pretend that meditation works right from the start, or that drugs and alcohol are not initially helpful on a certain level. The key word is of course “resilience”: Where other props will provide short-term answers, resilience is what will help us right now, tomorrow and into the future. 112pp, 178 x 175mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £8.99

CONSCIOUS UNCOUPLING, Katherine Woodward Thomas Unfortunately breakups tend to bring out the worst in us, but realistically we are going to have to go through a few in our lives, even though the Happy Ever After myth is still thriving. Katherine Woodward Thomas is a licensed marriage and family therapist and has helped thousands of people to navigate through difficult times. Gwyneth and Chris popularized the term “Conscious Uncoupling” but Katherine coined it first. She writes simply and the text is richly laced with stories and anecdotes. The tragedy of a break-up can lead to a new beginning and even transformation, and because of her skill and experience we really believe this and it stops being a self-help platitude. Ultimately she leads us to believe in love again, which has to be the best outcome. 320pp, 215 x 142mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £14.99

A FEARLESS HEART, Thupten Jinpa There is more and more evidence coming out about how compassion training can also be beneficial towards alleviating stress and increasing a sense of well-being. Compassion quite rightly is becoming “the next big thing” and we at Cygnus think this is the best book on the subject. Looking at the quotes inside, it looks like Jon Kabat-Zinn, Richard Gere and Jack Kornfield agree with us. There are plenty of exercises, mostly along Buddhist principles, plus fascinating stories of how people have transformed their lives, and improved the environment around them. 304pp, 235 x 157mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £13.99

Sacred People, Places & Rituals

RISING GROUND, Philip Marsden Why do people do what they do and why in certain places? What makes a place sacred? Why do ritual in the first place? These are just a few of the questions that Philip Marsden mulls over on his walks around Cornwall. Of course there are no clear-cut answers, but his exploration of these issues helps us to clarify why we are on the spiritual path, and how to make our lives and our surroundings more spiritual. Whatever that actually means! Every square foot of land in the British Isles has stories to tell. The land has been worked for thousands of years. When the author buys a house – when it is not practical for him to do so, but because he is drawn to do so – he is then moved to uncover the history of that patch of ground he now calls home. Discoveries he makes move him to make several walks west across Cornwall and in the process he finds out more about the land beneath his boots. This book is an inspiration for us too to get in touch with the Spirit of Place and to uncover those stories that are all around us. 352pp, 198 x 129mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £9.99

THE LOST TEACHINGS OF THE CATHARS, Andrew Phillip Smith

THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE GNOSTICS, Andrew Phillip Smith

This is an excellent introduction to the story of the Cathars and it sheds some light on their still obscure beliefs, the origins of which are still a mystery to many. Spiritual people then tend to project all sorts of beliefs and values on to them, and the author tries to unmuddy the waters as well as he can. Their secrecy and dogged resistance implies some kind of spiritual mission. What might it have been? We at Cygnus always have a thirst to know more about the world of spirit. This is an ideal primer which tells us the basic facts in a clear and compelling way. I can’t think of a better introduction, but in the end many of their beliefs seem strange even by the standards of their own time. Perhaps in the end it’s their courage and integrity that we should try to take forward into our own lives. 256pp, 216 x 135mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £10.99

Gnosticism has inspired a legion of literary figures, including Dan Brown and Philip Pullman. These fascinating people have travelled a fascinating path, from the Manichaeans in Persia between the 3rd and 7th centuries, to the triumphs and tragedies of the Cathars in southern Europe between the 12th and 14th centuries, to, finally, today’s Mandaeans in Iraq. Gnosticism’s emphasis on personal over organized religion, in keeping with the doctrine of the early Christian era during which it thrived, has found particular resonance with today’s multicultural world. This book isn’t simply another account of one sect’s practical beliefs and customs – it is, in effect, a manifesto, an appeal to those of us inspired by or drawn to the Gnostic faith not to forget its origins.

Author A Moment of Mindfulness

Title

A THOUSAND PATHS TO MINDFULNESS, Liz Dean

10 MINDFUL MINUTES: A JOURNAL, Goldie Hawn

The butterfly nature of our minds makes it difficult to remain in a place of awareness, and yet we know we need mindfulness to achieve rich and deep fulfilment in life. This little butterfly book, small enough to fit in a pocket or handbag, appeals to both sides of the question. The colourful pages and varied type faces invite us to dip in, short pithy quotes tempt us to browse, and yet the messages are profound, thought provoking and an inspiration for meditation. Perhaps it is all summed up in the final quote from Sharon Salzberg: “Mindfulness isn’t difficult, we just need to remember to do it.” Keep this book of bite size reminders with you as you tread the thousand paths of your life. 468pp, 144 x 128mm, Hardback, 2015, RRP £6.99

This book was written by acclaimed Hollywood actress Goldie Hawn, and there are two things that need to be stressed straight away. Firstly, she has been immersed in the world of spiritual discovery and personal growth for a long time and she writes with great wisdom and clarity. And secondly even though this book is a journal there is plenty of writing in it: wise guidance, prompts, quotations, short meditative exercises and questions. There is space for our own creativity but no shortage of ideas, and all of it is brought together in a beautiful and elegant package. It makes for a great gift for a friend or family member who is new to the spiritual path, or even for someone more experienced who will get fresh inspiration from this attractive good-value little book. 160pp, 198 x 129mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £10.99

LITTLE POCKET BOOK OF MINDFULNESS, Anna Black

THE GRATITUDE DIARIES, Janice Kaplan

Many of us, myself included, find it hard to simply appreciate the present moment. I know I worry about the future and find it hard to let go of the past, finding myself moving mindlessly from one activity to the next. I can’t help but be aware that if I was more mindful I’d discover amazing value in small moments and things - whether that’s a walk through a beautiful park on my way to work or the taste and texture of a delicious meal. This Little Pocket Book has proved to be a really easy and accessible introduction to mindfulness for me and it’s packed with easy-to-follow tips and suggestions that I’ve been able to incorporate into my daily life. 208pp, 146 x 146mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £9.99

You might not think that there is so much to say about gratitude, but this rich and illuminating account brings out the quiet joy which arises when you are thankful for three things a day. Kaplan writes beautifully about the events that she realizes she can be profoundly grateful for, and about how this process makes her life richer and more fulfilling. Along the way she also interviews medical and psychological professionals and reveals the positive outcomes they have discovered when it comes to the science of gratitude. There is a delicate balance throughout between anecdotes about the everyday challenges she faces and the fascinating pieces of scientific research she uncovers. Plus she includes encounters with celebrities like Matt Damon, Daniel Craig and Jerry Seinfeld. It’s an inspiring and uplifting account of how a real person can turn their life around for the better, using the simplest of techniques. 320pp, 219 x 145mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £14.99

Author Body Calm USING THE MIND-BODY-SOUL CONNECTON TO HEAL + BE HAPPY You don’t need a doctorate from Cambridge or Harvard to know your mind is constantly causing changes to occur within your body. Simply watch a movie that’s a bit of a tearjerker and the undeniable evidence of the mind–body connection can fast end up rolling down your face. Bear witness to injustices and you can feel your blood boil. Your stomach can churn when contemplating concerning thoughts and you can find your mouth watering at the mere thought of a food you enjoy. Yet, despite the proof being prolific, it is easy to neglect the mind when helping the body to heal and stay healthy. Stress is sighted as being one of the biggest causes of the majority of physical diseases. At the same time, meditation is known to be the most effective cure available for significantly reducing stress. Yet, again, despite these facts staring us in the face there are still relatively few methods of meditation used to actively support the healing of the body, with even fewer techniques having been specially designed to target the mind-based causes of stress and ill health. A MEDITATION-BASED SELFHEALING SYSTEM With Body Calm I want to bring meditation and healing together as an ideal marriage made for health heaven. Body Calm is a system for self-healing and sustained health that includes a lifechanging philosophy, quick-start cures for resolving the sources of stress and an enjoyable meditation technique that cleans up the communications happening between the mind and body and brings about a healthier belief system. Based upon a decade of discovery at my clinics, academy courses and retreats, I’ve also mapped the human body to create five directories listing the probable mindbased causes of a whole host of physical conditions. Although stress is often named as the main cause of ill health, it isn’t the reason why people get sick because stress is caused by conflict. Furthermore, for conflict to be present within your mind, body or life, there exists the presence of the

Title Sandy C. Newbigging two opposing forces of resistance and attachment. By this I mean, whenever you encounter a stressful situation, it is not the event that makes you stressed. Instead, it is the disharmony arising from an inner conflict between a reactive resistance to something you don’t want and an unseen attachment to something you think you need. Within the context of reducing harmful forms of stress, Body Calm aims to heal these hidden causes of conflict. ‘Stress is a symptom of there being conflict between what you mind wants and what your soul knows you need.’ Recognizing stress is caused by the inner push-pull conflict of resistance and attachment is an extremely empowering revelation. It stops you being a victim to circumstance and puts the power to be calm, and thus help your body be healthier, firmly in your own hands. This is vital because you may not be able to control life to make it always pleasing and pleasant. However, when you notice you’re stressed, you can take steps to actively reduce resistance and appease attachment, returning yourself to a more restful state. GO HOME AND REST IN YOUR SERENE SELF Visit a doctor, work with a health practitioner or seek advice from a friend and one of the most common recommendations you’ll receive if feeling unwell is to give your body rest. It seems

NEW

an easy enough task. Relax. Take some time off, put your feet up and chill out so your body has a better chance to heal. Despite ‘get some rest’ appearing to be a simple thing to do on the surface, most people I meet don’t know how to calm down, disengage from doing and let their body ‘be’. Central to Body Calm is the invitation to rest in your conscious awareness. Consciousness has no outer edges, is always present and beyond the physical body. It is a serene and secure state of being to return to, where all is wonderfully well and calm is continuous. It is my hope that by using Body Calm, the phrase ‘go home and get some rest’ takes on an entirely new meaning for you and that once you return, you stay for good. BODY CALM, Sandy C. Newbigging I’ve always been interested in the power of self-healing, so the idea of using a meditation technique to overcome minor health problems stemming from stess seemed too good not to try. I’m delighted to say that Body Calm is a great tool for just that – the meditations were really simple to add in to my routine and the book itself had lots of practical advice and made it easy for me to try the techniques and I can already feel a difference. I’m looking forward to seeing if I can keep up the practices as I am sure I will see some great benefits in the long term too. 296pp, 215 x 135mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £10.99

The Part-Time Vegetarian

This Italian peasant-style soup-cum-stew is a favourite way of utilizing vegetables as well as bread that’s marginally stale. Traditionally made in large quantities in advance and then reheated when needed – hence the name ribollita or ‘re-boiled’ – the soup makes a hearty, warming meal. You could also try swapping the bread for pasta to make a minestrone-style soup – either way, it’s perfect sustaining comfort food. ›››  Heat the oil in a large heavy-based saucepan over a medium heat. Add the onions, celery, carrots, turnip and cavolo nero stalks, then turn the heat down slightly and sweat the vegetables for 10 minutes, covered and stirring occasionally, until softened but not browned Stir in the fennel seeds, chilli/hot pepper flakes, bay leaf, garlic and parsley. ›››  Add the tomatoes, cannellini beans and stock and top up with extra water if the liquid doesn’t quite cover the vegetables. Bring to the boil, then turn the heat down and simmer, part-covered, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes. ›››  Add the cavolo nero leaves, season with salt and pepper and cook for a further 10 minutes, uncovered, until tender. Add more water if the soup is too thick, but bear in mind that this is a substantial soup. ›››  Place a slice of bread in the bottom of each serving bowl, ladle the soup over and serve drizzled with extra olive oil. A sprinkling of Parmesan wouldn’t go amiss.

“What is the use of a house if you don’t have a decent planet to put it on?” HENRY DAVID THOREAU

GARDENING & PLANTING BY THE MOON 2016, Nick Kollerstrom Planting by the moon can on one level seem to be a mystical subject, because it represents a different way of seeing and comes out of the Rudolf Steiner teachings. On the other hand nothing is actually more straightforward. There are tides, which also attract the water in the ground. This water rises to the surface and brings all the nutrients with it, thus feeding the plants. It’s this subtle interplay between science and mysticism, which makes this book so rewarding. You can read it as a practical guide to planting in your garden and getting the best results. On the other hand it is full of tips on how to honour the cycle of the year spiritually. It’s uplifting and life-enhancing and will inspire any reader to use every productive patch of ground to grow nutritious fruit and vegetables.
