Salmon Medicine

I

n both the Celtic and Native American traditions, salmon are revered as keepers of wisdom. Until a few weeks ago, when we went to see the film Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (see opposite), we never completely grasped why.

The story features a wealthy Sheikh who tries to create something that everyone else says is impossible: a river complete with real, wild salmon in the Yemen (a country where there aren’t even any permanent rivers). That is not his only aim, however. With wisdom, patience, subtlety and humour, you see him helping others involved in the project to act in the way that salmon do – swimming against the current to reach ‘the place of their creation’*, the place where their hearts feel most alive and at home. And, as Geoff and I watched all this magic being brought into people’s humdrum lives, salmon medicine hit us right between the eyes.

Following our hearts Suddenly it was crystal clear how very important the ability to swim against the current has been on our own spiritual path, and how so many of life’s lessons and difficulties are there to help us learn that very thing.

We all know, don’t we, that life works best when we follow our intuition, when we follow our hearts. At the beginning, this can look like a bit of a primrose path; we take the route that feels good to us, that makes us feel happy and alive. And to start with, at least, it can seem as though the there is very little difference between the path to our heart’s desire and the path of least resistance. This is like the early part of the salmon’s life cycle, when it swims downriver, helped by the current, to the deep ocean.

The upstream journey However, that is not the end of the salmon’s journey, and nor is it the end of ours. Sooner or later, if we are truly faithful to our hearts, the call will come to turn and swim against the current, to do and be things that are not easy, to act in ways that are contrary to our internal conditioning and beliefs, and will almost certainly also go against the many social pressures that influence our behaviour every single day, often without our being fully aware of them.

It is at this point that we especially need all the intelligence, all the wisdom, we can muster, to act as a clear mirror for the guidance coming from our hearts. For now, on our journey upstream, we are going to be asked to face our fears, to overcome our conditioning, to question our attachments and everything we used to believe, and everything social conventions and the pressures of our social group are telling us to do. So now do you understand why salmon – who instinctively know that if they are to reach the place of their origin they must swim against the current come what may – are revered as the keepers of wisdom?

Observe and trust your feelings So, whenever you find yourself in an upstream sort of situation – where, if you just go with the current the outcome

does not feel – from the point of view of your soul – like one that should happen, trust that feeling! A lot of people say we should get rid of fear, anxiety, doubt, anger; that these negative emotions are just obstructions on the spiritual path. But I don’t think a salmon would see it that way. These feelings can be accurate guides, just as they are with animals in the wild, telling us that our highest good lies in fleeing some things and approaching others. If you cultivate the ability to observe yourself – your feelings, thoughts and motives – in an impartial way, without judgement, you’ll learn to see them clearly, without the distorting lens of conditioning and preconceptions. And then you’ll be able to trust your feelings and see where they are taking you. They can be of enormous help as we travel upstream, against the flow of what everyone else seems to be telling us is true or right, and against the flow of everything we used to believe.

A personal example To give you an example, I’d like to tell you what I did when I was in hospital two years ago, and everyone thought I was dying of cancer. When I felt fear, I trusted it. I watched it, went with it and even expressed it with gay abandon. Because I noticed that, when I did things that helped my body to feel better, the fear went away. Now everyone else (except my amazing family and friends, that is!) thought that it wasn’t going to be possible to help my body feel much better. But my fear told me a different story altogether.

I reasoned that, if there truly was no escape from the situation, I wouldn’t feel fear at all. I would feel acceptance, peace, completeness. Just as I imagine salmon do once, having reached the ‘place of their creation’ and spawned the next generation, the vast majority of them die. They die because their lives are complete, not because their lives are ‘over’. And so it should be with all of us.

A higher current I’d tell you more about my upstream journey, but there isn’t space here, so I’m hoping to do it in another instalment sometime soon. Meanwhile, what are my final thoughts on the medicine of the salmon? That actually, they are not simply swimming ‘against the current’. They are swimming with a new current, an inner current, a current which comes from their own higher power, rather than the power of external things. And that’s what we need to do, too. To trust and follow our own higher power to such an extent that it will become stronger than any outer current could ever be. And then, just like the salmon, we will be able to go up, in situations where others would think we could only go down!

May the wisdom and instincts of the salmon awaken in us all.

hat is a quantum doctor? A quantum doctor is a practitioner of medicine who knows the fallacies of the Newtonian classical physics-based deterministic worldview that was discarded in physics many decades ago. A quantum doctor is grounded in the world-view of the new physics, also called quantum physics. And there is more. Quantum doctors bring the message of quantum physics alive in their practice of medicine.

Consciousness comes first You may wonder: What difference does a worldview make in the practice of medicine?

In contrast to the classical physics world-view in which the world is seen as a mechanical, determined machine, we cannot even make sense of quantum physics unless we ground it in the primacy of consciousness: Consciousness comes first; it is the ground of all being. Everything else, including matter, is a possibility of consciousness. And consciousness chooses out of these possibilities all the events we experience.

Now do you see? Physicians of the old ilk of classical physics aficionados practice machine medicine, designed for machines (that is the picture of the patient in the classical worldview) and by machines (the physicians who are self-avowed machines). And make no mistake about it, the medicine that the patient gets, allopathic medicine, is also of a mechanical nature, with chemical drugs, mechanical surgery or organ transplant, and energy radiation. A quantum doctor, on the other hand, practices conscious medicine designed for people, not machines. What conscious medicine prescribes includes the mechanical but extends also to the domains of vitality and meaning, even love. And most important, as practitioners of conscious medicine the quantum doctors bring consciousness to their practice.

Admittedly, the quantum doctor is right now only an idea developed in this article, an idea you are probably reading about for the first time. But if the idea is here, and as I will show, it is an idea with much integrative power, can the manifestation of the idea be far behind? In fact, a partial manifestation of the idea is ageold and continues to the present era.

I am talking about practitioners of what today is called alternative or complementary medicine, including the age-old systems of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda (developed in India), spiritual healing, the more recent homeopathy, and the very recent mind-body medicine. Alternative medicine practitioners go partway toward being quantum doctors. Their medical systems are designed for conscious beings, and they do have more dimensions than the mechanical.

Unfortunately, alternative medicine practitioners suffer from considerable amounts of worldview confusion.

Machine medicine Although our culture promotes the ‘great’ advancements of machine medicine all the time, still many people are disillusioned with

Partly, it is because, its ‘miracles’ notwithstanding’, allopathic medicine doesn’t work well for the bulk of our day-to-day medical problems – the chronic ailments, for example. And it is because machine medicine and mechanical procedures are very expensive.

So although the machinists in medicine are openly scornful of alternative practices, alternative medicine is gaining in popularity. Unfortunately, this only aggravates the reaction of the conventional allopathic practitioners.

But now, as their bread and butter is threatened, for many of them it is all-out war against alternative medicine. Alternative medicine is voodoo medicine, they declare.

If the world is machine, mind is machine, and even the soul is machine, as some observers contend, then how can anything but machine medicine have any validity?

Alternative medicine practitioners also strike back. Let’s note just two of their criticisms.

Allopathic drugs have harmful side effects, they point out. Why should we unnecessarily poison the body? Allopathic procedures such as vaccinations administered when we are children weaken the immune system so much that we become more vulnerable to disease later in life. Why should we accept such procedures without questioning them?

Can’t we end this war?

We all are interested in health and healing, in our physical well-being. We all search for

it when we don’t have it. But with the sharp division of medicine into two camps – conventional and alternative – it is increasingly difficult to choose the proper healing method when we need it. What criteria should we use for such a choice? Is a combination of healing techniques better than any one technique?

What should we do to maintain our health, to prevent disease in the first place? Can we heal ourselves without any physical or chemical instruments of healing?

The answers to such questions depend on whom you ask. Are at least some of the stories of spontaneous healing true? Some experts answer yes. But is spontaneous healing accessible to all of us? Experts from some medical traditions nod yes, while others stubbornly shake their heads no.

When we are middle-aged or old, are we to feel fortunate if we suffer from only a few chronic diseases, without any major life-threatening illness? Should we accept stress and lack of vitality as the price we must pay for modern living? Maybe so, some experts say. Why is economics such an important consideration for health and healing? We are sorry, say the experts. Is medicine only about pathology?

Can we not strive for positive health where vitality and well-being reign supreme? We don’t know, say the experts.

Truth is, we cannot begin to answer such questions with much credibility without developing an integral paradigm that embraces all medical systems that have adequate clinical data to support their efficacy. We must end the current confusion of paradigms that pervades medicine.

Never fear, the quantum doctor is here. The quantum doctor, like his or her worldview, is integrative. And I am convinced that when medicine is formulated within the integral metaphysics of the primacy of consciousness, conventional (allopathic) medicine and alternative medicine can be reconciled. Not only that, their different domains of applicability, even their interrelationships, will be clearly understood.

An inclusive paradigm But if you want to build an inclusive paradigm, how do you join contradictory philosophies? You need an inclusive philosophy. This inclusive philosophy – a metaphysics based on the primacy of consciousness in this age of science – is the gift of quantum physics and is the philosophy of the quantum doctor. In quantum physics, what we normally perceive as ‘things’ are seen to be not things; instead they are seen to be possibilities for consciousness to choose from. This single idea has the potency to integrate all the disparate philosophies underlying the different schools of medicine.

Purpose and destiny In yogic philosophy, our soul has four desires which it uses to propel us towards our unique destiny. The first is dharma, which is the longing for purpose, the drive to become who you are meant to be. For some people this is the desire for material resources to fulfil a purpose or mission, for other people it is the skills or qualities needed. Freedom from limitation The fourth desire is moksha, the longing for liberation. It is the yearning to be free of all the limitations of the other three desires.

Moksha is one of the driving forces of the world’s spiritual traditions. It is the call to prayer, contemplation, meditation. It is the longing to know the eternal, that which is beyond all limitations; to be free of suffering and to realise something beyond the five senses and even death.

The desire for moksha is the desire for lasting peace, beyond sensory pleasure. It is the desire to seek out the sacred, whether it is found in a church or temple, in contemplative solitude, in nature or through self-inquiry.

Moksha is the desire to experience awareness; realisation. Fulfilling this desire gives you entry into the most sublime heights of heaven on earth.

Pursuit and attainment Identifying your deepest driving desire requires you to acknowledge the life you have manifested up until this moment – not the one you are hoping to have achieve in 40 years from now. This means taking a critical and rigorously honest look at everything you’ve accomplished and not accomplished in your life so far. It means taking a look at your dreams – those you have pursued and attained; those you’ve attempted and stopped short of fulfilling; and those you failed to act on.

This is the work of the sankalpas – which means setting achievable goals to reach your aims. The process of sankalpa shakti involves acknowledging to what extent you have achieved your dreams so far, and recognising how much or how little effort you have directed toward fulfilling them for most of your life up to this point.

Following the yogic philosophy of the desires as a practice for personal and spiritual growth, will point you towards finding your soul’s deepest driving desire.

By understanding our desires as the impetus of our soul to manifest our individual purpose, or dharma, we can make sense of our life as a journey towards its fulfilment.

In this way each one of us can recognise our true soul purpose and begin to live in a way that means all our desires and goals lead us towards living our life in such a way that we are fulfilling our purpose.

atural soundscapes are the voices of whole ecological systems.

Every site on Earth has its own acoustic signature; as does every living organism (even viruses). Sea anemones grunt; baby vultures have a scream like you’d hear in a horror film soundtrack.

Giraffes are quiet; they have a low whisper.

The first time I heard ants sing, I was speechless for hours. Ants sing by stridulating – rubbing their legs across their abdomens.

While we were working on a project in the American south-west desert, my team was filmed by National Geographic as we recorded fire ants attempting to remove a pair of small lavalier microphones placed over the entrance to their nest.

The ants’ actions – the command signals to worker ants the impediment from the entrance – were communicated entirely by sound.

Secrets in the soundscapes The natural world holds many secrets that can inform our music. To harness nature as a source of musical inspiration, as restoration from the stress of the modern world, we must hike back to the wild places.

Once I’ve located a noise-free place, I listen, with my eyes closed, to the ways the blend of creatures’ voices define the space. I notice the seasonal dynamics of sound: rich and intricate in spring, delicate and sporadic in winter.

When I’m in the field observing animals up close, I try to imagine what they hear, and how the shapes of their ears collect sound and how they might perceive acoustic information. Try this: cup your ears and slowly turn around.

You’ll hear more because your ears just got bigger. The sounds gathered by the ear extensions make the sound appear louder and more focused.

I give the same advice to everyone: turn down the music for a moment. Try to put it out of your mind, and listen to the aural contexts in which the creature world vocalises.

As with any musical composition, engage with all the sounds that make up the great animal orchestra.

Listen to the bass, the croaks and groans at the bottom. Be mindful of the subtle differences in the ambient flow of thunder and rainfall, the wind in the pine trees, the waves at the shore.

Where the green ants sing Sound recording commissions took me to the still, ancient soundscapes of central Australia. The Pitjantjatjara live in the deserts and move through what appears to be a flat, undifferentiated terrain. The sound of the biophony is an acoustic guide or map.

The Jivaro or Shuar, live in the Amazon basin, where their biome is one of the most acoustically rich environments on the planet.

On an evening hunt, they find their way through the dense vegetation to follow unseen animals, directed by the slightest variation of insect and frog articulation.

In their sacred songs and dances with a couple of flutes and a rainstick, their music bore a strong relationship to the sounds around them and the emotion of the music seemed to echo the mood of the environment.

Deep sea chorus Coral reefs pulsate with sound. Logging gaps in the acoustic fabric Twenty years ago I asked a biologist working for a lumber company for permission to record at a forest management area. It was a lovely resonant place. At local meetings the

biologist assured the community that selective logging methods – cutting a few trees here and there and leaving the majority of healthy old sequoias standing – would have no adverse impact on the habitat.

I set up my system in the meadow and recorded an exquisite dawn soundscape of sapsuckers, mountain quail, sparrows, rubycrowned kinglets and numerous insects.

A year later, after the logging operation was complete, little seemed to have changed.

However, when I pressed the recording button, it was obvious that the once sonorous meadow had vanished. Gone was the thriving diversity of birds. The only prominent sound was the hammering of a woodpecker.

When habitat alteration occurs, vocal creatures have to readjust. Some disappear, leaving gaps in the acoustic fabric. Those that remain modify their voices to accommodate the changes in the acoustic properties of the landscape, which has been altered by logging, fire, or floods. All of these mean the natural communication evolved within a soundscape, breaks down and becomes chaotic until each creature’s voice once again finds a place in the chorus.

Secrets of our origins Natural soundscapes are one of the most fertile unexplored open sources of information. They contain secrets of our origins, our past, our cultural present, along with significant insights into our future – the increasing presence of human noise, changes based on shifting climate or evolution. wice in my existence I have had experiences of just completely slipping out of chronos time, and both were an incredible immersion into an infinite field of love.

The first time was after a year of tough and often challenging social work I undertook at the age of 20 in the city port of Marseille in the south of France, before entering university.

On the way home, I decided to make a short retreat in the Community of Taizé, at the time the first community of essentially protestant monks, now a worldwide movement still based in Taizé near Clugny.

I had gone to bed early – something very rare for me – and awoke at midnight with a little voice saying, ‘Pierre, go to the church and pray’.

I immediately mentally heard the voice of my very reasonable father saying ‘Pierre, don’t be ridiculous. One doesn’t get up at midnight to pray. Go to sleep.’

Fortunately the little voice was more insistent. It even had a sense of humour, whispering: ‘If Jesus had been reasonable, he would have been selling peanuts on the steps of the temple’.

Time vanished So I proceeded to the little church. There was nothing mystical, it was even a little spooky. So I just sat down with my New Testament and quietly started reading, taking notes as I went along.

Suddenly, without me being aware of it, I lost all sense of time. It just vanished. And for the rest of the night I had a vision which has stayed with me ever since, of the whole universe governed by the law of love, the ultimate law governing all, to which one day absolutely everything will bow in total submission.

I even saw that one day I would be imprisoned because of my pacifist convictions – and this happened 30 years later when I refused to perform in the paramilitary civil defense system serving anti-atomic air raid shelters.

Suddenly, I heard the cock crow. It was five o’clock in the morning. I had stayed perfectly alert, without the slightest sense of sleepiness or tiredness for five hours.

My most memorable experience The second experience I consider to be the most memorable experience of my life.

I was traveling from Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina-Faso, to Paris, all along

Moments Out of Time battling a case of dysentery I had just contracted. I was doing all the right things – meditating, praying, reading spiritual texts, uttering all the powerful spiritual affirmations that had helped me before, but to no avail.

Next to me sat an unaccompanied young boy, with his little notice on his chest with his name and address. The stewardess caring for him was the very soul of kindness, treating him as her own son rather than an anonymous passenger.

Cosmic love At one moment, she came and addressed him with such gentleness and kindness I suddenly felt the most immense gratitude for this woman.

And suddenly, the gratitude was transformed into a feeling of cosmic love that I had never had before, or had since. Time vanished. I just had this utterly awesome sense and feeling – I insist on the word, for ultimate truth is not of the mind but of the heart – that love was the basic substance, the only cause and effect, the only law and power in the universe.

Above all, for the only time in my whole life, the ego disappeared completely. I had no sense of ego.

Now this is what heaven is for me – an

acute awareness of the all-ness of love with not the tiniest residue of ego left to react, have opinions, approve or disapprove.

For me, this is the meaning of the famous statement of God to Moses, I AM THAT I AM, which means LOVE IS – ALL. Just praise and rejoicing.

Vision etched in memory Some moments later I came out of this experience. I felt something shifting in my bowels, and the dysentery instantaneously disappeared.

The consciousness of love healed it on the spot.

Such experiences are no passport to sainthood or illumination. As a matter of fact, I have at times fallen so short of the vision I could barely look at myself in the mirror.

But the vision has stayed, and is etched at the back of the mind as a clarion call and above all an imperative demand that I never, never give up until that vision is realised in my life and that of all people.

t Easter I was lucky enough to go to the Christ Consciousness Conference at the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland. There were many interesting talks but Philip Roderick, the founder of the Quiet Garden Movement and Contemplative Fire, particularly touched me.

During his talk, he said in a very relaxed way that he had a deep intuition that the events of Jesus’ life had cosmic significance for the evolution of humanity.

I liked his tone. He was not asking us to believe or worship anything. He was just sharing an intuitive truth for himself and inviting people to contemplate it too.

I also liked his comment because it reflected my own sense. Brought up in an atheistic home in central London filled with scepticism about religion, as a teenager I had the same feeling about Jesus.

Something happened in Palestine two thousand years ago that was a cosmic shift for the whole of humanity.

But what exactly does that mean?

Love is an active agent Many mystics have explored the cosmic meaning of the Gospel story and they tend always towards the same conclusion, which will probably not surprise you at all.

In a mysterious way that we do not fully understand, the events of Jesus’ life channelled a cosmic energy into the whole of humanity, blessing us with the potential to be more loving, more compassionate and more conscious.

This, for many, is the heart of mystic Christianity. The Gospel story is not just about Jesus. It suggests the extraordinary idea that Love is an active cosmic agent transforming and manifesting in everything including everyone of us.

Isn’t this one of the most profound and precious aspects of spirituality? Surely everyone who has ever given or received healing or been touched by the sheer beauty of existence knows about this Love.

From this perspective the real message of the crucifixion is not about suffering and sacrifice, but is about a Love that is fully earthed into the physicality of our lives.

In the Gospel story we can see that this is not a disembodied concept, but is fully incarnate in flesh and blood.

This is a crucial, isn’t it? Our spiritual purpose is not to escape away into the bliss fields and heaven, but to bring Love fully down into all people and Earth, creating a harmonious and beautiful human society.

The rose in the cross Some readers will be familiar with the symbol of a rose at the centre of a cross, representing how love, the rose, is incarnate into matter, the cross.

This powerful spiritual idea that Love must

Love at the Heart of Mysticism incarnate fully into humanity is also reflected in the Bodhisattva vows of Mahayana Buddhism in which monks and nuns affirm that they will not seek awakening and liberation purely for themselves, but will strive until all sentient beings have achieved the bliss of Nirvana, until Love is universally present.

This great mystic vision, we might feel, is all very well for monks and nuns but as we go about the daily rhythm of our normal lives — pay the rent, clean the house, help with homework —it might seem a bit beyond us to maintain a mystic vision. Here and now on a practical level, cleaning the kitchen, supporting our family and friends, what can we take from all of this that is practically useful and inspiring?

There is another crucial spiritual insight that we need to hold in our awareness and in our hearts, which is that the cosmic incarnation of Love is at the core of all of us.

The soul’s journey It is the very essence of our soul’s journey.

Suppose that I ask you, Why do souls incarnate at all? Why is your soul on this journey of incarnation?

You might reply in a very personal way about how you, as a soul, are developing love, compassion and consciousness. Or you might expand your perspective and reply: My soul, like all souls, is part of the cosmic breath incarnating Love into form.

The rose on the cross and Jesus on the cross symbolically teach us that every soul is an agent of Love incarnating into matter. There are also many other spiritual paths that convey the same truth.

Over and over again in esoteric and pagan traditions, we find teachings about angels, gods and goddesses who fall from heaven but rise again. In some of the ancient mystery schools these great myths were acted out in sacred theatre and ritual, and in all of them the core message was that your soul is the same as these angels and gods. We are all ‘fallen’ angels and deities, bringing Love into incarnation and manifestation.

Surrender to love What can we take from all this into our daily life? For me there are at least two crucial elements.

The first is that we need to trust that Love is not just something out there, some ideal that we will realise in the future, but that it is already fully within us, part of our very fabric as human beings, souls with bodies.

Sometimes I visualise this as being like characters in a Christmas pantomime. There we are on the stage looking for Love — and the audience is shouting: It’s inside you!

The second thing that is crucial for me — perhaps for you too — is for us to remember that our own personal struggle to grow and transform is never isolated.

We are part of a cosmic process bringing Love into manifestation and often the easiest way to cooperate is just to relax, stop fighting, drop resistance and yield to it.

A TRIBUTE TO SHAUNA CROCKETT-BURROWS Shauna Crockett-Burrows, the formidable founder of Positive News, has passed away aged 81. In honour of all that Shauna stood for, it’s with soft inner smiles, that we remember all the positive things she achieved in her life time.

Shauna Crockett-Burrows (1930-2012), renowned for her strong will, independence and endless energy, was a beacon of light in the media who pioneered a new approach to journalism, focusing on positive changes taking place in the world. She sought to empower people to realise humanity’s potential. Her belief in the interconnectedness and sacredness of all life led her to constantly try to create a better world.

Shauna did something wonderful. In 1993, the year after the first Earth Summit, she launched Positive News, initially named ‘Planetary Connections’. She was aged 63 when she started this unique newspaper, publishing positive news from around the world, reporting on organic agriculture, renewable energy, environmental issues, education, and global politics and she remained editor-in-chief right up until she died in May, after a short illness, a month before her 82nd birthday. Each issue has brought hope and inspiration to thousands of readers, shifting people’s perspectives, sparking new initiatives, and expanding people’s ideas of what kind of world is possible.

What a deserved ovation that Shauna was being considered for an honours award from the Queen. Humble in nature Shauna was unaware of this when she had accepted an invitation to a garden party at Buckingham Palace, which she was due to attend at the end of May. She also received The Schumacher Award in 1998, which honours people working to transform

society. She was recognised as one of the World’s Inspirational Women in 2007 in a book and exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery, which documented influen-
