hen was the last time you stopped to remember life through the eyes of a child? A song, played on the radio today, reminded me of the gentler, carefree visions of childhood. I smiled as the joyful melodies, and dreamy lyrics, swept me up from the serious mind frame I’d slipped into. Here are some of those lyrics, from an old Madonna song called Dear Jessie: The land of make believe Is inside your heart – it will never leave There's a golden gate where the fairies all wait And dancing moons, for you Close your eyes and you'll be there Where the mermaids sing as they comb their hair Like a fountain of gold you can never grow old Where dreams are made, your love parade Sweet Synchronicity It was funny because I’d just been reading The Mystery Experience, by Timothy Freke (see p. 12), which describes a blissfully light hearted, non-hassle approach to diving into the depths of life. Still contemplating Tim’s bright and breezy approach to the great mysteries, and the ease with which things flow when one just lightens up … the message that was clearly trying to reach me (to the point that it was echoed in this song) was gratefully received as my smiles turned to a light hearted giggle. ‘Why all the fuss?!’ It was as if the child within was playfully disapproving of my previous silly, stressed-out demeanours. And quite right too! Sometimes we do take life so seriously, don’t we, and we really can be a bit hard on ourselves. The pressure we put ourselves under when it comes to work, family, finances, social composure … even spirituality. We can come down on ourselves rather harshly, if we feel we’ve got it ‘wrong’, becoming ashamed or self cynical when we stumble from time to time.

Allowed to Dream Yet if we were to be this critical, impatient and unforgiving with the child we once were there would surely be tears. We simply wouldn’t be that way to a child though would we? Not if we were acting with love. Imagine coming face to face with yourself at eight years old, struggling to get a task done, or becoming overwhelmed by a lesson. We would see that the child is doing the best that it can.

We would encourage them, praising them for their individual qualities and we would reassure them that they are still growing and learning – that it’s okay to stumble; we all stumble. We’d never want to burden those special years with worries when they should be full of magical, beautiful, joyful dreams – of ‘pink elephants and lemonade’.

So who says our years ever ceased to be

The Wise Child Within special? Every single day is a blessing and we all are still growing and learning. Okay, so we’ve come to realize that life can be challenging and that we don’t always get to do what we want when we want to – but isn’t it better to turn those challenges into opportunities that can make us stronger and wiser? When we do ‘get it wrong’ or we feel we ‘can’t keep up’ maybe that is just an emotional nudge – encouraging us to really try our hardest. Our emotions are good tools; it’s wise to gratefully accept them and use them … but please, don’t dwell in that way that grown ups do, nor turn those tools into self-persecution. Be kind to yourself! Let go of the burden of worry so that your heart, mind and spirit are free to smile, giggle and dream as they always did and should always be allowed to do. It doesn’t make the challenges go away but a free heart, dreaming mind and our encouraged individual qualities will help us to get through each trial with the distinction of somebody who isn’t holding back, imbuing every situation with imagination and joy.

Let music lift you up One challenge that hasn’t gone away for us in recent weeks is getting this issue of the Cygnus Review done! All kinds of obstacles came up this time, so we’ve all been supporting each other with thoughts like these. As always though, a major thing that has helped us all to keep our heads above water is music.

Shakespeare said, ‘If music be the food of love, play on’, didn’t he? And it certainly is – the food of love, of peace, of imagination, of play, and most importantly, of our inner child – the wise, whole child who can guide us if we trust and love her. So whilst working I’ve been playing the two CDs on this page over and over again, as they both have a really special, childlike, playful quality that makes me feel as though I can handle anything.

Keep Going To close, I’d like to share with you one magnificent bit of comfort nature gave me just the other day. Feeling somewhat overwhelmed by the usual swirling pressures of life, I was walking by a river and spotted a pair of swans and looked to them for inspiration. Each of them seemed to really gaze at me just before dipping their heads below the surface of the water. It was if they were making sure that I was taking notice. Their gesture led me to understand that I was to look to my safe place beneath the surface, to find the strength in my core.

This is where a clear sky is always to be found, dotted with the sparkling stars that form the constellation of our own true Selves. And by these stars, we can always navigate as safely and as competently as any captain.

We each have a constellation in the same sky and that is where we have infinite unity – with each other and with the Divine that lives within each cell of our body and strand of our soul. You knew this place well as a child

– it is where you played with your ‘imaginary’ friends, it is where you innocently smiled, oblivious to the pressures of the big, outside world because you chose to spend your time somewhere far nicer, developing your natural instinct to ‘just be’. You might not be oblivious any more but you can still choose to dive beneath the surface for cover when you need or want to refer to your stars and find reassurance in silent fellowship. was on the phone to a writer who had published a book that made reference to the Holy Grail. I too had just finished a book about the Grail and was excited to tell him in brief outline something of its contents. Before I finished my first sentence he stopped me. ‘To be honest,’ he said, ‘I find it tedious.’

A mysterious blankness Now whilst I’m sure I could bore for Britain (and probably win gold) on the subject of the Holy Grail and the strange mission involving it that began for me nineteen years ago, it couldn’t have been any longwindedness on my part that prompted this withering remark, because I had been given no chance whatsoever to get into gear. The author involved simply didn’t want to know, and that was that.

I had consulted with Margaret Bailey in writing the book, and both of us were wonder-struck with what we had discovered.

But, uncannily, the same reaction occurred every time we tried to convey it. A glassy blankness descended over faces, eyes stared back at us mentally disconnected, polite frozen smiles fixed lips until the first pause came in our discourse, whereupon the subject was abruptly changed and the matter of the Grail firmly dropped. And this happened invariably, even though we just as invariably spoke to mind-body-spirit enthusiasts on the topic, and never to anyone whom we thought might not be predisposed to listen to us!

Back to the drawing board The book was published. Hardly anyone bought it. I found myself needing to withdraw, to go into retreat and focus on what had happened. And it was throughout the next two years, during which time I was really only in touch with Ann Napier and Michael Revill (whom I’ve always termed ‘the Grail Knight’) and was otherwise a hermit, that a cycle of truly wondrous events occurred which I will not enlarge upon here, except to say that I received clear information that the book, although not exactly inaccurate, needed to be rewritten. There were certain mistakes,

Silly Women omissions and oversights that I needed to address.

And so, with the invaluable aid of Michael Revill (Margaret was unable to help due to adverse circumstances and, sadly, died from cancer just as I was completing the second, revised book), the entire job was undertaken again.

Having finished the new book at last, I sent it to my publisher. He got back to me. ‘No-one will believe it,’ he said.

‘No-one will buy it.’ He turned it down.

I sat at home and puzzled. This new book, it seemed to me, told a compelling story well supported by facts, ancient documentation and research. The

picture now revealed itself, I thought, very comprehensively indeed.

It included the tragic event that happened 70,000 years ago: the terrible and purposeful severing of the Grail from the Earth. It described the operation of current governments and other powerful bodies in seeking to conceal not only a vital truth that has been hidden for thousands of years but many others besides.

Lincoln Cathedral – the key to the mystery?

It told how Jesus and Mary Magdalene came to release us from the bondage of slavery to ‘powers and principals’ that we had been taught to understand as ‘God’ or, nowadays, ‘correct aspiration’.

It told how they brought from mystical dimensions a collection of forgotten teachings called the Emerald Tablet (the genuine one) which will liberate us into an unprecedented soul freedom that will completely transform our suffering, war-torn world. It told how that infinitely precious document was hidden in the grounds of Lincoln cathedral, where it awaits retrieval today, in our own time. And how what must precede the coming of the Emerald Tablet, which will enable us to reconnect the Grail, is the dispensation of the Schethiyd, the Sapphire Tablet, whose magical teachings have been disseminated by Cygnus and many other centres of spiritual teaching and philosophy. his invitation to participate in the Birth is the most important letter I have ever written. Again, why do I say that the timing is so urgent? Why now? Can’t we wait a while and see how it turns out? No, we can’t wait. It’s like the birth of a baby. You might not be ready, but if the baby is ready, it’s coming out now for better or for worse. It can either be a disastrous birth, or a gentle one.

We are being called to a great experiment, for no one alive on Earth knows how to make such a vast evolutionary shift in such a short amount of time. For the first time in our conscious history we are being given the opportunity to guide and ease our transition to the next stage of evolution.

This situation is new for humanity, for we are the first Earth species to consciously face evolution or extinction.

This condition may be new for us, but it is not novel for the universe. Evolution operates by ‘punctuated equilibrium’, meaning long periods of slow change that are punctuated by apparent sudden jumps. For billions of years, nature has been going through such creative leaps. It has progressed from energy evolving into matter, to planets like our Earth, to primitive life, to animal life, to human life, and now to us going around the next turn on the Spiral of Evolution toward the next phase of humanity. When we review this Big History, this deep-time past, we learn that certain lessons recur: Crises almost always precede transformation.

Problems are evolutionary drivers. Nature takes jumps through greater synergy and co-operation within and among species.

An immense respect for life His respect for life is amazing. It is almost as if being on death row had multiplied his respect for life, as reflected in the following passage: ‘I try to learn from every little thing that happens to me. For instance, one of my friends is always talking about the fact that I do not kill the spiders on the wall, the roaches that crawl over the floor or the crickets that make so much noise in the middle of the night in the corner of the cell.

I do not kill them because the same force that supplied me with life also supplies them

with theirs. Everything was placed here for a reason. I allow the insects to have their space, and I have mine. But I learn from the insects. I watch them, how hard they work to stay alive and exist, and I get strength from the heart they exhibit.’

The above-passage reflects Roger’s fundamentally non-dual vision of spirituality: ultimately, all is the expression of the same infinite Life-force, unconditional love or ‘God’.

Love is only one thought away The following is one of my favourite letters. ‘An officer entered my cell and destroyed some of my personal affairs. When I came back and saw what had happened, I immediately became angry, I wanted to say something to him and he knew it. He was waiting for me to say it. In fact, he acted in that way without really being aware of what he was doing. Because a few hours earlier, I was on my knees asking God to give me the strength to face any kind of evil that I could encounter that day. So when the officer did what he did, he was playing a role in which he had been placed unwittingly.

I realized that the minute I looked at him.

And so, instead of saying something mean and become a victim, I stole the victory and smiled at him, saying: ‘Thank you, I needed to do something. And you know, officer, we all have our roles to play.’ That evening, before going home, he stopped by to present his excuses to me.

Love is only one thought away. It can never be depleted. Remember to use it often.’

His vision of the oneness of all things undergirds all his life and permeates his letters. ‘I believe that we are all one – that we are all one with everything and everything is one with us. There is no you or I or me – all is us. That is why when we see things that are not right, we hurt, because what is being done to one is being done to us all …

When we harm one another, we are only harming ourselves. All that is, is God. He is everything and everything is Him. When we meditate, we tap into where we come from just for a moment, and we feel what we really are, and that is love, because LOVE IS EVERYTHING, Love is God.’ My very favourite quotation of Roger’s is the following, which sounds like pure Meister Eckhart: We are what we have been looking for We seek what has not been lost.

t isn’t a coincidence that we speak about ‘earthing’ or grounding ourselves to establish or maintain a sense of stability or a still centre in our frenetic modern world. Often on completing a meditation practice, we ground ourselves by visualising our ‘roots’ going deep into the Earth to echo the lotus plant, a symbol of spiritual elevation, with its flower above water and its roots deep in the mud of the pond, spanning three physical mediums.

It is simple to do. Sense the energy in your body. Is it expanded outwards and heady? Visualise these expanded energies circulating into your heart chakra and then imagine them flowing down through your body into your legs and feet. From there visualise the flow going down into the Earth. You are the bridge between spirit and matter and your heart is the balance point.

By making these connections we bring our spiritual energies into the material world, and seek balance within the compassion of the heart. It is very important to ground ourselves every time we meditate because we are here to serve the world, especially at this time of transition, not to use meditation to run away or escape from it.

Integration with nature Connecting with nature, the Earth’s bounty, can be a deeply healing experience. It can stimulate positive experiences, make us happier people, bond a group together, and prompt a shift in worldview, from separation to integration.

I remember once walking on the Downs in England one sunny day and becoming aware that everything in the landscape was infused with sparkling, dancing energy. It emanated from every blade of grass, every stone, the sky, the clouds and even the lone figure walking (me!). I became strongly aware that the landscape and myself were made of the same essence behind the forms and that I was part of a greater unity. It was blissful.

There are many ways we can connect with nature and experience the intelligence and inter-connected web of our beautiful planet Earth. Working together in groups is especially fertile ground as not only does it bring a greater connectivity with nature, it also can enhance our group’s sense of identity.

It does not always have to be formal group work. Cooking a meal over an open fire, playing music together with household objects as percussion instruments, making art from local, found, materials, sleeping under the stars, or

A Magnitude of Stars Watching the skies on midwinter nights can reveal of magnitude of stars, constellations and even sight of the Milky Way but my favourite celestial month in Britain is August. This is when the Perseid meteor shower is visible.

Meteor showers occur when the Earth moves through a meteor stream. The stream in this case is called the Perseid cloud and it stretches along the orbit of the Comet Swift-Tuttle. The cloud consists of particles ejected by the comet as it passed by the Sun. Most of the dust in the cloud today is approximately a thousand years old. The famous Perseid meteor shower has

A fun thing to do on a clear night: Take yourself and some friends to a location that’s free of light pollution with the greatest panoramic view for star gazing possible, like a big beach. Light a camp fire, gather around it with comfortable camp chairs or on fleeces, eat a good meal and all gaze at different parts of the night sky.

You are bound to see shooting stars. Make wishes together: ‘A better world is possible.’

The Perseid meteor shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the greatest activity between August 8 and 14, peaking about August 12, and viewing is best from midnight onwards. At the peak, the rate of meteors reaches 60 per hour. They can be seen all across

the sky. It’s an amazing sight!

If your group is to be together for more than a few days, creating a small but bio-diverse salad garden is another technique. Gardening opens our awareness to the changing elements, micro-climates, the quality of water, the seasons, the local wildlife and the process of growth. There is little more miraculous than growing food from seed, and to appreciate the pattern inherent in the form and be an agent of its fulfilment by good husbandry. Planting seeds can also be a deeply symbolic act as we can plant our intentions as individuals or as a group as we sow.

Celebration of Reverence Whatever our cultural background or beliefs, making a sacred space can be both fun and hold a deep reverence. It can be a personal celebration of nature and natural forms and it can also be a still space for reflection and grounding. This can either be done together as a group endeavour or the facilitators can ask members of the group to add to the space as and when appropriate. A candle or incense can be lit every day and the group can collectively place positive qualities or intentions into the process.

How this space is used, however, needs to be in relation to the group and its culture. We are here to encourage each other but not to impose our individual culture or beliefs. When making a nature shrine, consider using objects that symbolise the four elements and four cardinal directions. In the northern hemisphere these are water (west), air (east), earth (north) and fire (south). Ideally place the elements in relation to the four directions.

This practice is shared by many indigenous cultures, including the Celts and the Native Americans. It enables people to deepen their orientation. Where does the sun rise and set?

Where do the winds and rains predominantly come from? Where does the moon rise and set?

You may also like to include the fifth direction – the inner element of ether.

This process of orientation with the four directions can be expanded. Times of transition – between night and day at dawn or dusk or the rising of the new moon or full moon – can be powerful times of connection. Take a walk at these times, listening to the nocturnal birds and animals waking up or going to roost and returning to their places of rest, observe the opening and closing of flowers, the changing light in the sky, the dayblind stars and planets… Theses are times of inner expansion and opportunities for a freshness of vision. Savour them.

I had a good friend who was an ecological activist and, every time she visited our home, she would assertively point out the household stuff that was unethical and polluting. I twitched as

My monkey-mind and patterns of consumerist addiction wanted to keep on using the same old stuff that I had used for years. But I needed to adjust and give awareness to the damage that I was actually doing, so I was grateful for her reminders and gradually turned my bad habits around.

Our inspiration to care for the natural world derives from our being part of it.

W

e experience the mystery of being as a deep love that unites all things as one. The New Testament puts this beautifully in religious language when it declares:

‘God is love and those that live in love live in God and God lives in them.’

I remember coming to deep-know this was true during my awakening experience as a 12-year-old boy. Some weeks later, in a religious education lesson at school, the teacher invited in a priest to discuss Christianity. As part of our class discussion I suggested that all we really needed to understand was ‘God is love’. The teacher and priest smiled condescendingly and one of them said: ‘If only it were as simple as that.’ But I was sure it truly was a s simple as that. And I still am.

The presence of God is a reality in my life.

But for me God isn’t a great spirit that is separate from me. God is the primal oneness that is conscious through me. God is the mystery of being that is arising as all beings. And when I know God I experience a love that embraces all beings.

Religious traditions often portray God as a big person who decrees how we should live in holy books, which are the ‘word of God’. But God doesn’t speak to us. God is the primal silence that speaks through us. All words are human words and conditioned by the human experience of living in time. They are partial expressions of a truth that can never be articulated. There is no ‘word of God’, but if there were it would only be one word. And that word is ‘love’.

Devotional Love During the early years of my awakening I experienced an intense love affair with God, full of passionate longing when we felt apart, and deep communion when we found each other again. It is such a precious feeling when, as the Christian mystic Hildegard von Bingen puts it, ‘the mystery of God hugs you in its all-encompassing arm’.

Many spiritual traditions describe awakening as an experience of devotion to God. Other traditions maintain that having a devotional relationship with God characterizes a lesser awakening. It shows we’re still enmeshed in the illusion of separateness, because in reality we are one with God. In my experience, however, these two approaches are complementary not contradictory. Being one with God and being in love with God are paralogically different ways of experiencing the same awakened state. When I’m deep awake I see I am both separate and not-separate from all that is. I am one with the mystery of being and I’m this separate individual called ‘Tim’ who feels intense love

Loving Being The great Christian mystic Meister Eckhart teaches that ‘God is Being’ and urges us to ‘love God’. When I first read these lines I became full of insight. If God is being, then to love God is to love being. It is to love being here and now as Tim. It is to love the being of everything and everyone. It is to love all that is, simply because it is.

When I love being, it feels good to be. I know how much I want to exist. This love of being is something that permeates the whole of nature, which biologists call the ‘survival instinct’. But it is much more than just the will to survive; it’s an experience of the fundamental joy of living.

A World of Wonders When I’m deep awake I find myself in love with both the mystery of being and the exquisite world of appearances. I become awed by the beauty of the world. I become overcome with wonder at the multifarious richness of life. I see the numinous in nature.

The German scholar Rudolf Otto describes the feeling of communing with the natural world as: …the sense of being immersed in the oneness of nature, so that man feels all the individuality, all the peculiarities of natural things in himself.

He dances with the motes of dust and radiates with the sun; he rises with the dawn, surges with the wave, is fragrant with the rose, rapt with save the nightingale: he knows and is all being, 40% all strength, all joy, all desire, all pain in all things inseparably.

In mythological language when we fall in love with nature we’re paying homage to the divine Goddess. She represents the mysterious appearances of life, just as God represents the mysterious essence of life.

God is the life-dreamer. She is the lifedream. We are living in her sacred presence right now. She is everything we can see and hear and touch and taste. She is Mother Nature.

My deep love affair is with both God as the ground of being and Goddess as the appearance of being. The natural world is an objective expression of the unconscious oneness from which we have arisen. It is the unconscious foundation from which conscious bodies have evolved. When I see the numinous nature, I see the mystery in the manifest.

Heaven on Earth In the Gnostic ‘Gospel of Thomas’ Jesus proclaims: The Kingdom of Heaven is laid out upon the earth, but people do not see it.

Heaven and hell aren’t afterlife rewards for good and bad behaviour, they are states of consciousness we inhabit here and now. In my experience, when I’m only superficially awake my life is at best banal and at worst full of suffering. But when I’m deep awake, life becomes magical. The everyday world becomes a lucent miracle shimmering with deep love. I see that heaven is truly here on Earth.

In the ‘Gospel of Thomas’ Jesus also teaches: The Kingdom is inside of you and it is outside of you.

If we reach deeply within or without, we discover the same mystery of being, which holds the world together in its loving embrace. Then we fall in love with being. And this transforms hell into heaven.

he mind of a child is vast and formless. It flows to whatever fascinates him or her at the moment. A child can concentrate on a game or a toy to the exclusion of all else. He has no mental conception of self so he is fully alive to the world around him rather than living through the tedium of his thoughts. Were it not for their lack of knowledge about the world they inhabit, children would be natural masters of Zen. A mind like water Zen is that activity which flows unimpeded and without mediation from the Unconscious. It is action directed by instinctive wisdom rather than by ego or intellectual control - it is what we may call spiritual in origin. This mind is known by many names; one of them is the Unborn.

Those who experienced this renewal of the mind were careful not to give us any concept by which we could pinpoint or ‘understand’ it. The Unborn, the mind like water, is real only to those who can experience it as a living reality. To attempt to grasp it as an intellectual concept is to murder it.

Jesus Christ admonished his disciples to suffer little children to come unto him because the Kingdom of Heaven was open to those who approached it in the manner of little children. The Kingdom of Heaven, he later explained, is within us. We are back to the mind of childhood. What did you do to maintain your child mind when you still had your youthful innocence? How did you lose it?

To develop the instinct of the Zen warrior, you must return to the childlike mind.

By doing so you will lose none of your adult wisdom or knowledge, but you will be able to integrate intellectual understanding with non-verbal communication to regain oneness with your body. You will once again become alive to the world around you.

How we lose our way We lose the virtue of the child mind as we gain greater dependence on spoken language and become more aware of the world. First the rules enforced by our parents and later the laws of society dictate how we should act and, in the process, how we should think. As a result of outside controls which are introduced by words and enforced by some type of threat, we begin

We view our own direct impressions against outside demands and interpretations, creating a dualistic mind which divides the inner from the outer, me from you, in the larger sense good from evil, and so on. Authority becomes solidly associated with external forces, with words and symbols. and they teach us how to succeed within the boundaries provided. We view the world with the aid of tools they have given us … once again, words and symbols. Our mind is reduced to words and responds to words. Unknown to most of us, we often respond to the symbol rather than reality.

Presence of mind The warrior, however, cannot afford the luxury of these preconceptions. He or she must react only to what is actually happening … and that means he must remain focused in the now. Danger may come from a person or it may come from a situation. If a car comes speeding towards you out of control, it does not matter that this

is something you never faced before; you must have the presence of mind to dart out of the way. There is not time to analyze or ask why the car is out of control.

The young child is able to play with such concentration and learn with ease because his mind has no concept of past and future. He is present. Being present, he is full of energy. The child mind does not cling to things or events but drops them at will and moves on with equal intensity to whatever else he chooses to do. The Masters of old learned that this is the way of the Original Mind of man, non-clinging. When you cling to a fixed concept of yourself - doctor, janitor, lawyer or waitress, weak or strong - you develop a rigid program that your mind is compelled to support. It is not the duties that present a problem but our tendency to associate ourselves with a limited concept as self. It is this solid image of self that we fear will be harmed by an attacker. At the first sign of danger we cling protectively to our fixed image. But this image is no more the real you than a photograph is. The quicker you rid yourself of this crippling barrier, the more alive you will become to the moment and the endless variations of this remarkable creature called you.

Do not limit yourself Some people say that a young child thinks he is the centre of the universe. In fact, the human being is the centre of the universe, at least on Earth. All men, women, and children should recognize their value as living intelligences in our universe.

Babies and young children are living beings, real persons, yet they have no egoconcept of who they are. Adults, on the other hand, erroneously believe that they cannot exist without a good healthy profile in their heads as guidelines for behaviour.

What they are doing is severely limiting themselves by this perception. It is like mistaking a ditch for the ocean. You are body, mind, and spirit. While we know the physical form is limited by nature, we cannot begin to measure the depth, width and height of the mind and spirit. Why settle for less than the best you can muster from your person? From head to toe and through and through, you are a being of marvellous capabilities, filled with thrilling possibilities. You are the most astounding creature on Earth, the incredible human being. Animals have claws and horns, stings and fangs, but you have an incredible mind and a fathomless spirit. You need fear no man or beast, if you could only understand what you are.

oday we’d like to talk about something we’ve never really explained our thoughts on before: the problem of evil and suffering.

Why do humans do such terrible things to each other sometimes? Why do so many of us suffer so much? Why does it sometimes seem as though life is pelting us with rocks from a very great height? And why are so many people’s minds so resolutely closed to any idea that could free them from their chains?

We’ve been thinking about these questions ever since we can remember, and of course we’re familiar with the concept that the laws of attraction and karma determine our experiences. ‘As you think, so you will become’, is the popular saying, isn’t it.

But you know, we don’t entirely buy that, although of course it is partly true. Years and years of careful observation amd questioning have led us to conclude that it really is as some people say: there are counterforces, both incarnate and discarnate, who for reasons we won’t go into here, are literally hell-bent on delaying, diverting or if at all possible preventing or destroying the divinely intended evolution of life in our universe. And these forces sometimes tamper with our experiences. But how do they do it? Do we really need to be afraid, or even concerned, about them?

Bending the rules In The Coming of the Holy Grail (p. 3), Claire Nahmad has come up with the best explanation we have ever come across of how the counterforces operate. She says it’s not that they break universal law, but they are dab hands at bending it. So for example, say you have a karmic tendency towards a certain difficult experience.

Well, they won’t change that, but they may enhance it, so that you suffer much more than is actually necessary to learn whatever it is you need to learn. And then the desperate feelings of pain and torment understandably brought on by your suffering will add fuel to the flames of negative thoughts whizzing about in the world, and make it all the easier for the counterforces to knock us off course next time.

Or, say you have a certain belief, character weakness or blind spot that might lead you towards a difficult experience. Well, again, they won’t change that, but they’ll find all kinds of ways of boosting it so that the downward vortex they have created is kept in motion, and you will feel much more trapped and bogged down than you really need to.

And They All Lived Happily Ever After Claire also feels that the education system, and the way many people bring up and socialise their children – with lots of criticism, judgement, denigration, control, conditional love and overemphasis on the intellect at the expense of the heart – has also, over the course of millennia, been carefully nudged in a certain direction by the counterforces. They have done this, she says, so as to provide the perfect mechanism for encapsulating their souls and keeping to the absolute minimum any possibility of their coming into direct contact with their innate wisdom.

A shadow play But.... even with all their machinations, the counterforces can’t change the truth. And whether or not we always feel it, we certainly know

So all the counterforces can do is to take whatever shadows may appear in our minds and magnify them – the bigger the better – in the hope that we will be scared and cowed into submission. It’s a game – a nasty, lugubrious game oftentimes, it has to be said – but still, that’s all it is: a game. And you know what?

We don’t have to play. Let us explain why.

Press ‘fast forward’ Picture, for a moment, the course of soul evolution, and ‘fast forward’ it in your mind’s eye to its ultimate end. Now whatever your particular beliefs, we can probably all agree that the end of this most magnificent story will be wonderful beyond imagining – that there will be perfect love, rejoicing, understanding, harmony, beauty, peace and friendship. And just in the same way as there are infinite routes to the centre of a circle, but only one centre, so – while there may be infinite ways of reaching this beautiful destination – there is only one ending, and it is totally non-negotiable. Which means to say that, while the counterforces may be able to delay our eventual arrival, or change the route we take to get there, they are absolutely powerless to prevent our ultimate homecoming. How about that!

The ultimate safe haven As human beings equipped with the powers of imagination, visualisation, thought and feeling, we are not anything like as limited by time and space as we think we are. This means that we can place ourselves, mentally and emotionally, right at the heart of our divine home whenever we like, and bathe ourselves in that perfect feeling of reunion and joy to our hearts’ content. And that, dear friends, is not just the ultimate safe haven; it is the ultimate deterrent to all the machinations of whatever forces may be trying to throw us – collectively and individually – off the scent.

It may not stop them from trying, but they’ll be so much less likely to succeed. Because we’ll know, like Alice in Wonderland, that they’re ‘nothing but a pack of cards’. So why don’t we all try making that our spiritual practice for a month or so, and see what happens? There are quite a lot of Cygnus readers, so the results could be quite interesting, couldn’t they?

A song to keep you tuned in Inevitably, we won’t always find it easy to stay tuned in, but there are so many things that can help and support us – each other, nature, books and music to name but a few.
