ear Friends, There is a lovely young oak tree on the common near where we live.

Earlier this year, someone tried to set fire to her. Now, her trunk is blackened all down one side, and some of her roots are just charcoal.

What a tragedy! How could anyone do such a thing?

I don’t know, but I feel a very strong connection with the tree, perhaps because it seems to me that we have a lot in common.

We are both a bit damaged – me by cancer, her by fire – but yet we have so much life, so much to give to the world, so much still to create.

Healing ourselves and the tree So, every day when Geoff and I are in Wales, we visit the tree, connect with her, and give her healing and love. At first, the only thing that filled our minds was the need apologise.

To say sorry to the tree for the ignorance and cruelty of our fellow human beings. And quite spontaneously, with open hearts filled with love for the tree, our minds were drawn to the Hawaiian healing practice of Ho’oponopono: ‘I’m sorry, I love you, please forgive me, thank you’.

This went on for weeks, until we really felt that the tree had received and accepted our apology, and our minds were nudged on (by the tree) to the next phase in the healing process. Primarily an affair of the heart, there was nevertheless a kind of language involved which, if you put it into words, would read as follows: Let us remember, O beautiful tree: Our crowns are in the heavens; our roots are in the Earth.

We are wonderful and eternally whole.

Nothing – no thing – can ever change that!

And we are AWAKE!

As you can imagine, Geoff and I found this just as healing for ourselves, as we were hoping it was for the tree. After all, every good healer knows that healing energy flows both ways, not just to the receiver, but also to the sender.

It can’t be otherwise. And I believe that it is thoughts like these – not just generated by me but sent to me by many loving people in prayer and meditation – that help me to live a full and normal life, and that draw help towards me in all kinds of forms, despite all the (gradually passing) physical difficulties I appear to have. And I’m sure that, the more I allow thoughts such as these to fill my mind and life, the faster my healing will proceed. It’s a question of remaining open to the flow of life, especially at times when conditioning makes us want to close up.

A bright and constant flame That’s why we decided that the theme of our 2013 calendar should be strengthening, healing thoughts like these. Remembering our true, Divine nature and fanning that spark of awareness until it becomes a bright and constant flame is the most healing thing we can do for ourselves... and each other. I always find that, the more I can bring my conscious – and subconscious – mind back home to the Truth of who I am, the more safe and confident I feel, the more my chakras

seem to me to clear and brighten up, and the more healing opportunities (including better physical remedies) come my way.

So what is the Truth of who we are? It is the beautiful truth that – while each one of us is a unique and wonderful being, who causes the Divine heart to sing for the sheer joy of knowing we exist – we are also one with the All, one with Love, one with harmony, with the Divine and with every being in creation.

So let us make it our daily intention to allow this ever-deepening awareness to guide all our footsteps, for it always will. You are<i> God’s hand, and you are <i>in God’s hand, and you can never fall out of it, for there is nowhere else to fall. In the face of this laser-light of your awareness, everything that seems to hold you back, everything that seems amiss or out of place, must simply melt away. It may take time, for matter has a certain momentum, but melt it will. You need never doubt it!

Oneness and individuality I often notice that, when people talk about their experiences of oneness with the All, they seem to think they need to say that there is only oneness, as if we were all part of one big homogenous soup. But the words they choose to describe their experiences still indicate an awareness of ‘self’ and ‘other’. That’s why, just as the mystic and philosopher Tim Freke* always explains, it seems to me that oneness, and a sense of our individuality, are not mutually exclusive. You can have – and as human beings we are <i>meant<i> to have – both at the same time. The words written to inspire and encourage you as you use our calendar are intended to reflect this, and to help you to develop a clear sense of both your unity with all life, and your glorious, uniquely lovable individuality.

An experiment for you to try So now, just to dot the ‘i’s and cross the ‘t’s, I’d like to give you an illustration of just how easy it is to feel and know a genuine sense of oneness with the All. You’ll think this is silly perhaps, but bear with me, and just place your awareness on your big toe for a moment. You know it’s your big toe, right? And, since you are in a body, you do identify, at least to some extent, with your big toe. Agreed? But do you actually feel a sense of I-ness in your big toe? Same as you do when you point to your heart, or your head? I bet you don’t! But, as we agreed, it’s still your big toe isn’t it.

Now just move your awareness to the surface your big toe is resting on, be it the sole of your shoe, a carpet, or some blades of grass or whatever. OK, as regards a sense of I-ness, or rather the lack of it, that surface doesn’t feel that much different from your big toe does it?

OK, (unless, perhaps, you are a particularly advanced sadhu!) you probably can’t move it

redictions for 2012, from Armageddon to the rapture, have not come to pass. The ending of the 13th b’ak’tun in the Mayan long count calendar this December has not brought the movie style cataclysms

anticipated by many.

Yet there is no doubt that the radical changes we are all experiencing – from extremes in climate, to upheavals in social and economic structures – are symptomatic of a new epoch, a new time, a new stage in human evolution.

Those like yourself, who are already travelling the spiritual journey, appreciate that the influx of new universal forces and powers are bringing real change to human life here in the outer reaches of our vast galaxy, one amongst billions.

On the crest of this wave of change rides the future. Yet many people mistakenly assume that the future will be an extension of the past, where humans integrate with computers and control life by touchscreen. But the technology of the future will not depend on machines external to the human.

It will depend on the liberation of the greatest inbuilt technology on earth – the human mind.

A consciousness upgrade Such is the upgrade in levels of consciousness which we now feel. Yet this is not to do with selfimprovement as a first principle. Self-improvement, self-discovery and self-development form part of the crucial preparation to be ready to enter the new fields of possibility where the future is being seeded. But to progress, we will need to stop being complacent with what we already know, and start falling in love with what we don’t yet know. For it is with such humility that we court the future, with love and respect. We become its partners.

All our faculties of seeing, sensing and listening are projecting forwards to an open future, but when we shrink life down to our own personal experience we become limited save by what we already know. The future is mostly 33% beyond our current knowledge and experience, in the same way that the caveman could not envisage composing a symphony or designing aeroplanes.

The human model that we now inhabit, Homo sapiens sapiens, is in the flux of its greatest evolution ever. We can hardly imagine what the new model will be like once the faculties of mind, spirit and soul have been liberated.

Using our higher faculties To be part of this future, and no longer subject to a modern world in free-fall and collapse, we will need to be much more open, ready and skilled in the use of our higher faculties of response so as to connect to and engage with the future.

We will need to sensitise ourselves to how the mind, the mentality and the spirit feel and sense and connect. We will need to trust and develop our instincts and intuitions. We will need to really listen to the new ideas and intelligence that arises in us and other people. We will need to be free enough to let the future move us to meditate and write and sing and be its instrument of change.

This is courting the future.

The children, and all those yet to be born into this mysterious and magical part of the universe, potentially carry the pollen of change and the new ways we may not as yet perceive. They ride the crest of evolution.

Will we also catch these incoming waves of change as they bring new intelligence, new power and new worlds of human possibility? Will we dive in without fear,

E

veryone, but everyone, goes through difficult times in life. It is part of the process of breaking down the forms with which we are comfortable. Yet these must be dissolved to enable us to learn and grow. These can be beliefs or attachments, the most painful of which is the loss of someone we love.

To be entire we must be broken Buddhist teaching tells us, ‘All life is suffering’. Our suffering is the compulsion to believe the illusion; that what we are and experience is enduring and entirely real, rather than the shifting sands of Maya. However rooted we may be in spiritual practice, we all experience this suffering because we are human. However much we cultivate detachment, we remain delicately enfolded by our loves. This is one of the great paradoxes of life: to be entire we must be broken. To be wholly human we must love deeply, but if we open ourselves fully to the experience of human love in all its forms – as we must – we will inevitably be hurt.

And so it is with me. I have just lost a brother, suddenly, unexpectedly... It is the strangest of experience because a sibling is so close both biologically and in a shared childhood. As the days have become shorter I have felt shadows being cast over my life. I have, at times, felt I have lost my way.

How then do we cultivate solace?

How do we heal ourselves?

I firmly believe that each moment of our time on Earth is precious and that we are here to live to the full, however wounded or challenged we may sometimes feel. It is our wounds that help us develop our empathy and compassion for others. In our suffering is held our capacity to love unconditionally.

It isn’t always possible to be upbeat and courageous, but over my life I have learnt how to cultivate solace.

The natural world is a well of inspiration and beauty and every day

Cultivating Solace I try to absorb the solace I find there literally into my body and become more connected with the great cycles of life. One of my favourite ways of being in nature is to walk and I try to go for a walk every day, whatever the weather, and feel the sun, rain, snow or mist on my face.

The solace of walking A real treat is to spend a whole day walking or, better still, days at a time along a chosen route. This is a way of transcending the normal, the routine, and the day-to-day. Jonathan Reggio describes the process of pilgrimage beautifully in One Day the Shadow Passed: ‘The journey … is long enough to ensure that the solitary wayfarer has plenty of time to think – long enough indeed to ensure that he or she stops thinking altogether and begins simply to exist. For only once the mind is stopped, say the Zen monks, can it be truly repaired.’

I like to make my pilgrimages along some of the ancient Celtic trackways in England. I live close to the South

Downs Way and The Ridgeway is not far away. Up on the chalky Downs I feel uplifted by the heady views. It is a sensuous experience to feel enfolded in the curvaceous landscapes as I look down into yew forests that have been there for millennia. It reminds me that “my little life is rounded in a sleep” and I can let go and rejoice that this is so. I am no longer a personality, more a force of nature, an elemental.

When I can’t get away to walk I can sublimate that sense of connection in good books. I love crafted language, being transported to other worlds, the delight of a well-wrought story, the vicarious experience of another... The God Tree

erhaps for thousands of years it was the custom for holy men and women, specially appointed, to carry branches or Ormiston Yew dry staffs from © Copyright John Darcy particular Yews of special significance, to Britain from Ancient Egypt and the Holy Lands.

The Tree of Life They were carried by pilgrims, at great personal risk, destined to be planted in remote sanctuaries, particularly in Wales, where they sprouted and grew into trees.

Thus, for those who brought them and those who instructed the planting, it was of the utmost importance ensure the continued existence of something so precious and to preserve it for future generations. Why was it that Britain was chosen for planting the sacred trees and Wales became the country with the largest collection of ancient yews, sacred trees on Earth? It may be that those who instructed the planting knew Britain to be Albion, the White Island, the most holy site in the world. It’s no coincidence that ancient Egyptian texts locate the Tree of Life on such an island in the west.

St. Padarn was one of these carriers. He went to the Holy Lands in the company of St. Teilo and St. David and you might have expected it to be David who would be chosen by the Archbishop of Jerusalem to receive the most precious gift of all, an extraordinary staff of the name of Cyrwen. At the time this was thought to be the most honoured gift that could be made to an individual. In an early medieval Welsh verse this staff is described as follows :‘Much accomplishing, much loved, it gives protection, In holy power reaching the limits of 3 continents, No other relic can be compared with Cyrwen, (the name of the staff ) A wonderful gift – Padarn’s staff.’

The name of the staff means holy might, white, miraculous power and force. All these things are meant by the staff ’s name, Cyrwen.

We believe this staff was planted over Padarn’s daughter’s grave at Llanerfyl and grew into one of the most extraordinary, monoecious (both male and female) yews ever seen, as it writhes its way horizontally around the churchyard resembling 4 serpents.

The Holy Grail There is a legend that says that Joseph of Arimathea once journeyed to Britain and as a merchant, traded for tin in Cornwall. On one of his visits he brought the boy Jesus and on a much later visit he returned to Britain

bringing with him the Holy Grail which he buried at the place now called Chalice Well.

Of course these are stories, but in such things as legend and myth, there are elements of truth.

In the early 1960’s, archaeological excavations were carried out in and around the Chalice Well, led by Dr. Philip Rahtz.

No chalice was found but perhaps more significantly, bearing in mind the holy rood, a Yew stump was discovered at a depth of some 12 feet. Scientific examination of this wood proved it to have been a living tree around 300 AD. One wonders about the significance of this and its possible link with the legend of Joseph of Arimathea...

It seems most likely that what Joseph brought was a wooden staff cut from the Tree that Jesus hung on, which contained the bloodline of the Tree of Life and the Elixir of Immortality. A few hundred years later, 3 Celtic saints, Illtyd, Cadoc and Peredur, from the Druid world who had double identities as both saints and Arthurian knights and who were known in the Welsh Triads as the ‘keepers of the graal secret’ were also connected with staffs and yew trees and may

ne of the most surprising discoveries given to us as I was writing the story of the Grail was that © Christian Bauer 2006 concerning what lay within the true Ark of the Covenant (as distinct from the false and highly dangerous rendition of this mystical artefact). We saw, simply, a pot of honey!

A potent symbol The symbolism of honey is both profoundly simple and simplistically profound. When the thirteenth-century alchemist Michael Scot taught that honey falls from the air into flowers and is then collected by bees, he was not being whimsical and unscientific. He was in fact referring, via potent symbols, to closely guarded secrets regarding the distinction between the true anad the false Ark of the Covenant and the vital connection between the human soul, the bee and our planetary life-support systems.

The ‘honey in the air’ is the divine gold of the spirit that enters us through our breath when we attune ourselves to the ‘God-breath’ or the ‘Mother-breath’, which is simply a method where each breath is imaginally drawn through the heart so that we enter the sanctified realm deep within.

Via this gentle ‘God-breathing’, the honey or divine gold falls into the ‘flowers’, which symbolise our chakra system, those points in the body (the ductless glands) where the physical is conjoined to the worlds of the spirit.

An emanation of the Divine Feminine The most ancient alchemical secret of all is that the mystical honey flows from the Divine Feminine, and that it is necessary for human souls to absorb this substance to be united with God. Its potency was recognised as that of peace, harmony, love and burgeoning life. What was secreted within the false Ark was a counterfeit food – a toxin or drug that inflamed the lower self and fomented war, misery and death.

We need to use the magic of the true Ark of the Covenant in overcoming the forces of our shadow self. It enslaves us by filling our minds – our thoughts, emotions, percipience and attitudes – with fear, intolerance, distaste, harshness, dread, unhappiness, criticism and negativity, from which anger and even violence and desecration arise.

To counteract this dark invasion, we nourish ourselves with the food of the gods. This ‘nectar of supreme excellence’ is, in earthly terms, simply honey, for, as Michael Scot knew, honey has an unsurpassed ethereal counterpart that nourishes the soul, and the magic of the Sacred Feminine (known as the khu) dwells within it. Its essence is gathered from flowers, just as the Scarlet Priestesses of ancient temples were the flow-ers who fed the khu to the earliest kings when the original human pattern of the androgyne was split. It is indeed a form of natural gold.

Thwarting the darkness However, although it is very good to take

Surprised by Honey physical honey in balanced quantities, we can use its ethereal qualities with great effect to thwart the intentions of the dark interlopers. We do this by first softening, making gentle, the negative thoughts or feelings that come swirling into our soul-space – our mentality and emotional self.

Soften and make gentle the way the inrush of negativity has made you feel.

Now turn the focus of the ayin – the inner eye – to the thought of honey. It is utterly sweet, like the balm of a new day or evening birdsong. It is not cloying or saccharin-sweet, for its sweetness turns the soul to God. Its sweetness is the divine antidote to the burden of degradation and disgust, or the burning sting of distress, that the negative inundation has created within you.

Take the ethereal essence of honey, like an angelic thought, deep inside your mind and soul, into your emotional self, into your suffering nervous self.

It will actually soothe away an acid stomach or a sense of bitterness in the mouth and throat. It gets rid of the deposits of misery and sullenness and general negativity that envelop us from within. It gets rid of the gloop and mire of mindcontrolling influences. Take in ethereal honey, take in sweetness, and feed it to your heart and mind.

Feed it to the ayin, and look out at the world through softened, gentled eyes, through sweetened vision.

What does it mean?

What will happen? What do the Maya prophecies say?

These are tantalizing questions but the answers are not so far away. A pendulum swinging into light It is as if the great pendulum of time has swung from the deep darkness of despair, materialism and greed into the light of hope, co-creation with the natural world and the essence of living together in harmonious communities. It is evident in the moves towards environmental awareness, appropriate technologies and in both planet care and people care. We pick up this positive swing into year 2013 and beyond as, sometimes small, sometimes large and dramatic, events indicate that indeed, ‘times, they are a changing’.

In my book ‘Crystal Skulls and the Enigma of Time’ I explored this movement towards positive evolution on physical and spiritual levels; ‘If we look through evolutionary eyes we will see the unfoldment of a 600-million year progression of life on Earth, from the first multi-cellular fauna to modern humans. Everything built up around the 2012 date is recent interpretation and traditional Calendar Daykeepers of the Maya in Central America simply see time as continuous cycles within cycles. Contrary to popular belief there have been no predictions from the Ancient Maya other than that we can expect changes in keeping with the ending of a 5120 year long cycle and beginning anew. Yet it is precisely because people are focussing their intentions upon the 21st of December that it can be used to swing the pendulum of time into a positive direction.

ecently I have been having an enjoyable time flower arranging a conference. No, I am not referring to the floral bouquets that you may find on the stage or in reception areas. I am talking about arranging the timetable and the speakers.

I first heard this phrase from a close friend who worked for the United Nations when we were organising the schedule for a conference at the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland. I was trying to decide which speaker should go first and who should go next, and what would be the best flow for the participants.

‘Flower arranging,’ my friend said. It was a perfect way to describe the process. Get the timetable and the sequence right and the whole conference becomes an enjoyable bouquet.

A fragrant aroma Behind the scenes, this flower arranging can go on almost until the last moment depending on the personal schedules of the speakers. All may look very calm at the front, but backstage organisers can be desperately juggling times and sequences.

But as well as flowing well and looking good, a conference bouquet must have a fragrant aroma too. It has to have a good atmosphere.

And that is why I am really enjoying scheduling this conference, because all the speakers are both knowledgeable in their own field and also have a loving vibration.

If I mention the names of just two of them you will understand what I mean. One is David Hamilton, an author much loved by Cygnus readers. Another is Sister Jayanti, an inspiring United Nations wisdom keeper and European leader of the Brahma Kamaris. Yes, the conference has a good aroma! (All right, I know that some of my readers are now saying that they have had enough of the floral metaphor. But let me have just one more. How about Sweet William Blooming? Sorry.)

This conference next May is all about how spiritual care can best be integrated into education and healthcare and has been inspired by all the emerging initiatives to bring spirituality into the mainstream. One of these, for example, is the recent initiative promoted by Jane Cummings, the Chief Nursing Officer for England, and Viv Bennett, Nursing Director of the Department of Health to in their words, ‘develop a culture of compassionate care.’

From mindfulness to kindfulness In fact, all across the British Isles in healthcare, in social services and in education, there is a clear understanding that good

Kindfulness practice must always include spirituality. Some of you may be surprised to learn that the biggest interest group in the Royal College of Psychiatrists is the spirituality group.

Most of you though will, I am sure, be aware of the recent moves to integrate mindfulness meditation into healthcare and psychotherapy, because of the valuable benefits of being able to pause, step back and witness our thoughts and feelings.

To be truthful though I have always been a bit suspicious of the word ‘mindfulness’ and would much rather that we used a new word like the one I have just made up: kindfulness.

I’m suspicious of mindfulness because I associate it with some harsh attitudes that I met in my early years of spiritual enquiry.

When I first started exploring meditation I once sat in a group for example where the teacher hit my back with a cane in order to sting me into the right posture. I also experienced meditation teachers who harshly barked at students that their minds must be completely empty and silent, not realising the spiritual benevolence and acceptance that permeates true silence and emptiness.

I have often wondered about this harshness and think perhaps that it may be because over the centuries men — not women — have mainly taught meditation; and that many of these men were associated with martial arts traditions, so approached meditation as if it were a fighting skill, requiring discipline, determination and internal ruthlessness.

Also in this particular approach to meditation I have often encountered a rudeness and elitism. For a while in my twenties I too carried this unpleasant attitude, believing that my ability to be a detached witness of all my thoughts and emotions, and a detached witness too of other people, made me superior.

Yes of course, the ability to step back and witness is a fundamental tool of meditation, mindfulness and consciousness expansion, but obviously it needs to be done with compassion, wisdom and a warm heart.

From a purely selfish perspective, cold detachment is a damaging trait, sending messages of punishment and anxiety through our neuro-endocrinal system, causing tissue tension and depleting our immune system.

And when directed towards others, it can frighten and intimidate.

Hence I prefer my made-up word kindfulness.

As a young man, having learned the discipline of mindfulness, I now had to learn to surrender to love and so then gravitated to the many teachings of compassionate meditation.

Two parallel paths During this long process I also learnt

something hugely important and which will I hope bring a great sigh of relief to many Cygnus readers. To achieve a state of benevolent and compassionate detachment does not require the discipline of a formal daily meditation practice. A kind and wise heart will also take you to the same place. I have met many lovely people who through having a good heart and a kind attitude have slipped instinctively into being able to step back and observe what is going on with a loving and wise temperament.

So I think there are two parallel paths here that need to entwine, balance and plait.

The first path is that of meditation and mindfulness, which then has to learn to develop and surrender to compassion and love.

The second path is that of the heart and kindness, which then has to learn to be awake, wise and watchful.

Of course they may happen simultaneously and they both take us to the same beautiful and enlightened place of spiritual development: awake, connected and loving .

Crystals As Connectors: Accessing Sacred Space

S

acred tourism is increasingly popular but not everyone can travel to locations that may be in the most inhospitable of places.

Fortunately you don’t need to physically travel to a site, you can journey there in your imagination.

Have you ever wondered exactly what makes space sacred? Why our ancestors venerated natural features? Why they moved Bluestones 150 miles from Preseli in the Welsh mountains to Stonehenge on Salisbury plain? Why the ancient Egyptians quarried pink granite in Aswan and carried it the length of Egypt to line the pyramids? Why an ancient meteorite is embedded in the most holy shrine of Islam? The meteorite at the heart of the Kaa’ba was venerated for thousands of years before Mohammed set foot on the site. Crystals hold the energy of creation itself. They are imperishable, immutable and incorruptible. They form a portal between the visible and the invisible worlds. Legends tell us that crystal caves underpin many sacred places and that the earth has crystal bones.

I’ve always been interested in sacred sites. One of my earliest memories is of reaching out of my pram to touch a stone in a remote Welsh stone circle.

Almost seventy years later the imprint of the jolt of energy I received is still with me. It probably kick-started my spiritual journey, downloading information I would need in the future. Such circles are almost always constructed of granite, a stone that generates measurable energy and which has many legends attached.

Your crystal travel agent I’ve been to many of the world’s most sacred sites but, as I don’t like flying, there are others I couldn’t visit. Until now. I’ve found a way to access the sites through their crystal connections. Thanks to an interesting experience with a Preseli Bluestone, I’ve become an armchair traveller. It picked me up, whisked me away to Wales and then flew me back to Stonehenge. All without moving from my armchair. And so can you. All you need is the right crystal and if you have a photograph that captures the energy of the crystal, such as those in Crystals and Sacred Sites, that will take you travelling. When I look at a photo of the great black basalt figure of Skehmet in Karnak Temple, I am immediately back there prostrate on the ground before her honouring My Lady.

Crystals harness the innate energy of a site and its healing and transformational potential. That’s how my American publisher came up with the sub-title: Use Crystals to Access the Power of Sacred

Landscapes for Personal and Planetary Transformation. We created a sinuous dragon line of sites around the world and the more attention, and intention, that’s put into this power line, the more our planet – and you – will benefit.

The crystals in the book were specially chosen because they have an energetic resonance with the sacred site with which they are paired. They may come from the area immediately around the site or from further afield, or, in some rare cases such as Sedona or Pipestone the site itself.

To choose your site, select one that has a particular resonance for you. This may be because of ancestral or past life links, cultural or belief connections, or you may have been attracted to the site and wish to know more. Looking at photographs of a site may give you a jolt, the kind that says ‘I’m here, waiting.’ Or, you may already have one of the crystals associated with a site and want to explore further.

The book opens with the Circumpolar Regions and the Insuksuk figures that the Inuit have built for centuries. When I first saw a picture of one of these figures striding its way across the landscape it gave me the shivers – pleasurable ones but powerful. I just had to have one. When it arrived, I sat down and meditated with it and found it took me to a place of deep peace and honouring of the land and the people who had gone before. I found that an Insuksuk had been built at Kandahar airfield in Afghanistan to honour the fallen there. A plaque at its base reads Inuksuk The term inuksuk means ‘to act in the capacity of a human’ Among the many practical functions, they were employed as hunting and navigational aids, often showing the direction towards a food supply or home.

In addition to their earthly functions, certain inuksuit had spiritual connotations and were objects of veneration, Often marking the threshold of the spiritual landscape Or in other words Sacred Ground We hope that this place will remain sacred and that the Spirits of our fallen comrades will find their way home to peace and rest.

Ritual: building an Insuksuk At its simplest, an Inuksuk can be built from three or four stones – any type of flat stone but I recommend serpentine – stacked on top of each other. As you build the figure, focus your attention on the power of inua (life force) so that it imbues your sculpture. If you are building it as a memorial to one of the fallen, keep

In 1976 I walked into a dimly lit room in the London Museum of Mankind. A crystal skull perched on a plinth suddenly glowed blue and pulled me towards it.

ear Cygnus, I was thrilled to see the article in last month’s Cygnus about Alice HerzSommer, the oldest holocaust survivor. I saw a programme (see DVD – Everything is a Present – on p. 7) about her several years ago, and was so inspired by this woman who to those living around her was known as ‘the lady at no.6’, and those that passed in the street below her 1st floor flat would stop to listen to her piano playing, many of them having no idea of her history. Her vibrancy, her love and forgiveness is an example for everyone, and after the programme I sat down and wrote the poem below, which I’d just like to share with you.

when I saw it appear in Cygnus Review I felt that I just had to tell you all about this ‘magical’ album. That is, if I can! You see the effect of this beautiful music is difficult to explain, it has to be experienced. Thinking that this was a welcome addition to my growing collection of relaxation music, I put on my headphones and settled down to listen. WOW!! One track released tears from nowhere, and then another track produced a joyful ‘belly laugh’ again completely out of the blue. This CD is truly magical and continues to be; I use it as background to my yoga practice and find that I am more focused as a result.

I know that mine is just one opinion, but this hauntingly beautiful music produced such a feeling that you want to share it with everyone, and if you do decide to treat yourself to this CD, I sincerely hope that your experience is just as magical.

On my first visit my patient was a horse with an ulcerated leg. Already being prescribed ointments by the vet – none of which were working.

As is usual I attuned myself to the animal and placed my hands on the bad leg. I realised that some other remedy was necessary.

During the next forty-five minutes the owner and I were scanning the local shops for a jar of dark African Wild Bee honey. Having used honey successfully in the past, I made a guess that it would work again this time. A honey poultice was applied over the next few days and gradually the wound healed.
