Compassion: the First Key to Liberation

ear Friends, For this new year letter, I wanted to talk to you about compassion, and how – after all the effort we may or may not have made to pass through the gates of liberation in the run–up to 2012 – liberation is NEVER for ourselves alone.

As we are fond of saying to each other, we are all ONE, and that means, we share. We share our woes, our failures, our joys, our victories. It is ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL. And that is why the first key to the gates of liberation, is compassion. No one gets through who does not know how to turn that key. You can get all the way to the gate, but the chaps at the door will just say to you, ‘Bye bye – time to turn around and go back. Dive into the sewer of human sorrow, roll your sleeves up, get your hands dirty, and then we’ll see.’

Shine a light

Humans get lost down all kinds of dark alleyways. Are they to wander there alone? Without a light? Without a guide?

Not while you and I are here, I hope!

And that might mean that sometimes, we take on some share of the human burden of woe, and through our efforts to find a way through for ourselves, we shine a light for our brothers and sisters as well.

To illuminate this for you, I want to share with you something a friend of ours wrote about a little incident in book five of the Harry Potter series: One day, when Ron is engaged in

playing quidditch, Hagrid asks Harry and Hermione to come into the Forbidden Forest with him. When they reach a place deep in the forest, they see a great mound of earth that moves rhythmically up and down, accompanied to the sound of deep, grunting breathing. They realise to their horror that it is a sleeping giant.

‘I couldn’ leave him,’ said Hagrid, tears now trickling down his bruised face into his beard. ‘See – he’s my brother!’

These are among the most sublime words in the whole Harry Potter septology. This proves what the Masters of Compassion feel for humanity: they see us as their brothers.

The sleeping giant is the symbol for the unconscious masses.

We learn that the giant’s name is Grawp and that he is tied down to the trees around him. Hagrid asks Harry and Hermione to befriend him and to ‘teach him things’.

Here we see a Master of Compassion, or Hierophant, showing the apprentice alchemist what his task will be in the future: to teach unconscious humanity. This is an extension of Harry’s work as leader of Dumbledore’s army, which is the Jupiter initiation. We notice that Ron is absent.

This is a task for the new soul and the new mind. The old, earthly personality is not involved.

The mystery of why Hagrid is always bleeding and showing wounds and lacerations is now solved. Grawp is somewhat reluctant, and not too sensitive about what he does to others. This is the reward for the Bodhisattva’s sympathy for the suffering of the human race: wounds, blood and pain. But to Hagrid this means nothing. He loves his brother with all– enduring patience and brushes the wounds off as insignificant.

lighten the burden of your brothers and sisters. Like Harry and Hermione, you can be an apprentice alchemist. Maybe that’s why this experience has been drawn into your life – not because you ‘thought the wrong thoughts’ or ‘felt the wrong feelings’, or ‘made the wrong choices’, but because light – our light, the love of our Mother God – has to be brought into every area of human experience. And how else to do that, unless you share in that experience yourself?

Benefits

And you know what? Enormous benefits will accrue to you if you throw yourself into the ‘game’ of life in this way, for it is through compassion that our intelligence, vision, discrimination and wisdom are clarified. A person who does not cultivate compassion can be fooled every step of the way. Basically, you can get them to swallow anything, so long as there’s a bit of ‘jam’ on it! And that’s why I think Jesus said ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends’. Because you know, I’ve observed all kinds of people and asked myself what gives them that quality of spiritual purity which means their efforts to love can’t be contaminated by the ‘dark side’?

And the only answer I can come up with is because that little saying of Jesus colours their life. And that’s why I agree with Mrs Blavatsky (see The Voice of the Silence) that compassion is the first key to liberation.

She says there are seven keys, so maybe we’ll talk about more of them in the coming months. Meanwhile, we pray that you may find and be able to use all of them.

elcome to 2013. I wish you a wonderful year. I wish you waves of grace, inspiring experiences and real advances in your spiritual development. At the same time I pray for global healing and a harmonious, sustainable and just society.

Looking forward to this year I had an email conversation with Ann, beloved editor of Cygnus, about the theme of my article this month and she suggested that it would be good to look at how we might achieve change in the coming year.

So I took her idea into meditation and found myself focussed on two particular themes. The first is about how humanity as a whole has peak experiences and how as a global community we experience collective moments of inspiration. That was one reason why so many people were caught up in the 2012 prophecies. Hugely significant and transformational global events do indeed affect all of us.

The second theme is around hope. I do not mean wishful thinking, nor do I just mean an optimistic mood. What I am looking at is that deep spiritual experience when we find ourselves in a mystical state of love, compassion and wisdom, and in the words of the 14th century Christian saint Julian of Norwich we experience: ‘All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.’

Those wonderful words about hope come from a spiritual knowing that transcends time and space, that love–benevolence–compassion is the underlying substance of all existence, in the beginning and in the end; and the journey of souls through suffering and pain is ultimately about revealing and integrating this love.

Of course this statement that all shall be well may be provocative to those who see it as a naïve way of denying reality. But to be in a state of hope, to experience that all shall be well, is in fact a profound balm. It radiates love into human realities.

Collective peak experiences Sometimes it is difficult for us to acknowledge the love and wonder of life.

Our glasses are half empty and we only see the negative stuff. The lows, the crises, the wars and famines, the ecological stupidity, the religious conflicts, the mad cycles of the global economic system. All this can be demoralising.

We may previously have had peak experiences of spirituality and fully felt that God is Love, but worn down by the grind of daily life we

Humanity’s Miracles and Peak Experiences may lose our sense of hope.

This is when spiritual practice is so crucial.

The daily rhythm of taking time to connect with spirit is essential, creating a groove of connection to see us through rough and challenging times.

Groups, communities and humanity as a whole also experience peaks of inspiration.

Have you ever, for example, been to a concert where you were part of a collective high?

Could you feel the collective inspiration and joy around the recent London Olympics?

Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony was a global blessing wasn’t it! Do you remember the first Live Aid concert when the whole world tuned into the idealism that Bob Geldorf initiated?

Do you remember when the Beatles’ All You Need Is Love was broadcast globally and when John Lennon sang Imagine. It was a collective experience.

It was magic too for the whole planet when Nelson Mandela walked free and apartheid ended. Do you remember the fall of the Berlin Wall?

These are all global peak experiences. But would they be possible without the absolute wonders of modern broadcasting, media and digital technology? No wonder that Sir Tim Berners–Lee, inventor of the internet, was celebrated in the Olympics opening ceremony.

For many mystics the internet is a tangible manifestation of humanity’s essential unity and connection.

There are many collective peak experiences through human history. There are also save collective miracles if you choose to notice 46% them.

Three hundred years ago, for example, the vast majority of people in the UK were uneducated and illiterate. Despite an increase in population from six million to sixty million, everyone today can receive education. Three hundred years ago life expectancy was approximately thirty–five years and two thirds of all children died before the age of four. Today life expectancy is passing eighty and children enjoy their childhood.

Three hundred years ago running water in your home was a rare privilege and today it is there for everyone. Miracles! And yes, of course, they need to be spread to every corner of the globe.

The Renaissance too was sensational wasn’t it? And what about the Magna Carta? Or the founding of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation? And as students of spirituality, weren’t the lives of Jesus and Buddha global highs?

Is our glass half empty or half full? Do we see what is inspiring and wonderful? Every new– born child is a miracle. Every blade of grass, every cloud, demonstrates the magic of life.

Inspiration or perspiration?

In our personal spiritual lives we know that we have to integrate the high spiritual inspirations through a daily practice of compassion, love and mindfulness.

As a global community the inspiring highs also have to be integrated through careful, intelligent and committed daily endeavour. Education and health for everyone, harmonious societies, require work. It is ongoing daily labour that manifests the miracles in the real world. As Thomas Edison, inventor of the light bulb, famously said, ‘Genius is one per cent inspiration, ninety nine per cent perspiration.’ Inspiration and peak experiences ground and integrate through labour.

So here is my counsel for 2013: t Give attention to inspiration, progress and miracles. t Do practical things every day, appropriate to you and your situation, that build a better and more just society. t Spiritually, maintain an attitude of hope deep in your very core. ‘All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.’

n the past year, I have been working as a volunteer with one of the most amazing NGOs (Non–governmental organization), I have encountered in my existence. Started by a woman, Marianne Sebastien, who is primarily a singer (yes!) and who has integrated song into her basic development approach with amazing success, Voix Libres Works in Bolivia, with the most dispossessed of the poor on the planet: street children, the child miners of Bolivia (some start work at seven years old and are responsible for igniting the dynamite sticks in the mine and then running away so that the underground tunnels don’t collapse on them – which they sometimes do!), the very poor farmers of the Altiplano, the dispossessed of the large cities who live and sometimes are born and die on city garbage dumps and prisoners. Bolivia’s prisons are amongst the worst in the world.

Frequently the whole family is imprisoned with the husband. Inmates can wait up to six years before being judged (many are poor farmers who planted coca), and they are not fed so the kids have to go out during the day to find food.

The approach adopted by Voix Libres is quite unique. It speaks of inner (personal) development as the basis of exterior (material and social) development, something I have never heard before in the development world where I was active 25 years. All the work of the NGO is based on the following qualities: Love: This is the foundation stone of all Free Voices activities. In response to a document she had submitted to the UN presenting the NGO, she was told ‘one doesn’t speak of love at the UN’!

Trust When one totally trusts the grassroots they respond by doing amazing things in all areas.

Marianne loves repeating that the best specialists of poverty are the poor themselves, not the experts staying in four or five star hotels. But trust is an essential ingredient of relations with donors. Free Voices is the first NGO in the world to have started micro–credit loans for prisoners in jail. Inmates can spend 6–7 years in jail before coming to court – and sometimes of course are found innocent. Families frequently live with inmates in the prison as they are not fed by the prison and have to fend for themselves.

Self–esteem is essential to anyone who wishes to progress in life, especially people who have received none. Among the many tools used by the organisation to stimulate self–esteem are art and especially singing. After working for years at 3000–5000 feet underground chewing coca leaves to keep going, child miners have immense difficulty expressing themselves.With their parents, they ‘live’ in small stone houses with no electricity nor heating at 13–14000 feet, sleep on ‘mattresses’ of stone, their water polluted with arsenic and cyanide. So singing has an extraordinary way of freeing up their vital energy. To date, almost all the young children (around 5000) have been freed from the mines of Potosi, among the most derelict in the world.

They also have ‘self–praise’ sessions, where a group of children learn to speak positively of themselves, and hère again the results are immensely moving. Marianne also gets all the prisoners of a prison to sing – an amazing spectacle.

Always emphasize the positive, the potential Domestic violence (including sexual abuse) is one of the great social problems of the planet.

Most programs against domestic violence have failed in the world, or worked only very poorly.

Empowerment of the grass roots So many development programs all round the world have failed because they were conceived by an outside agency, and carried out in a top–bottom manner, with little or insufficient local grass roots involvement. Free Voices will not start an activity until it is certain the grass roots will carry it in the long run. All programs in Bolivia are run by individuals who came from the grass roots, like Nikanor who was born on a garbage dump and now runs a school. In a country run by male ‘machismo’, 100 percent of top leadership positions are in the hands iof women, and 70 per cent of intermediary ones.

Perfect Protection for the Mind, Body and Soul

I

was quite awe–struck when I first learned about the great angel Mithra. In fact, if such a human emotion is not too noisy and crude in its vibration to admit to in relation to the angels, I was excited!

Mithra – the unconquerable Sun Zoroaster (Zarathustra), the Persian mystic who taught the inspired doctrines of his God of Light in the ancient world, was the teacher who first brought to humanity the knowledge of angels. All historical references to angelic beings stem from Zoroaster’s teachings.

His knowledge had its base in ancient Mesopotamian texts, texts that arose from the earliest civilisation that history has recorded in detail and which flourished with such a strange brilliancy in what is now Iraq and the borders of Iran. Of all the angels we know and love today, Mithra, ‘the unconquerable Sun’, seems to be the one that in a general sense we have almost entirely forgotten.

Yet I believe that Zoroaster did not merely draw on records of antiquity in order to make the angels known to us. I believe (a belief supported by artefacts and archives examined by Laurence Gardner with scholarly thoroughness) that Zoroaster was the biblical Ham, and that Ham lived for an extraordinarily long time upon the Earth. Ham was the original Zoroaster, and subsequent high priests of the order he initiated were given his titular name as an honorific.

From this perspective, Zoroaster did not study ancient texts, but personally taught what the Mesopotamian scribes recorded. His were the ancient teachings of Enki or Oannes (a name that afterwards metamorphosed into ‘John’), who was Zoroaster’s God of Light. In Persia, Enki or Oannes/John was known as Ahura Mazda.

And it is the Age of John the Lightbearer that is prophesied to be the new age of enlightenment which will sweep the world in the coming days. All the ancient mystery schools knew of this oldest of prophecies.

The true source of divine light Oannes taught (although the flame of his teachings was later obscured by shadows of omission, interference and manipulated doctrine), that the true source of divine light was within the heart, and that the heart’s indwelling light was the presence of Divine Mother encompassing Divine Father. Both aspects of the Godhead were in perfect equilibrium and unity, but human souls were uplifted into the centre of this unity by

kneeling in reverence to the most holy wisdom secreted in the heart.

His teaching cited Divine Mother as the first principle, and Divine Father as the second principle, a teaching which has been entirely reversed in almost all religions existing today, and indeed in almost all rites that humankind has practiced throughout the centuries since those earliest, forgotten times.

Oannes or John’s overlighting angel was Mithra, Angel of the Gates of the Sun who opened up its glory to those who were centred in the light of the heart. Mithra was John’s angelic teacher, instructing this illumined human soul who seemed godlike to earthly humanity because of the level of spiritual evolution he had attained, on the nature of God and how humanity should approach God – God the Mother–Father.

Mithra was the angel that Zoroaster most praised and held in greatest awe. Zoroaster extolled Mithra’s extraordinary power, beauty and radiance, his divine eminence and grandeur. He warned against the foolhardiness of misusing Mithraic influence or appearing before him without a scrupulously pure heart.

Mithra – a Kick–Ass angel Mithra is definitely what I like to call a Kick–Ass angel, which means that he is an angel we call on to infuse us with an angelic dynamism that will change our lives and our consciousness, rather than requesting his aid for less profound things.

Michael and Shekinah stand at the pinnacle of the angelic hierarchy, and yet could not work with humanity as they do without Mithra. It can be said that Mithra is an aspect of them, but he–she is so intimately linked to them, and there is such an interchange of creative communion between them, that it is as if Mithra is their child. Mithra is the point of connection between heaven and earth, and constitutes a shining Jacob’s ladder that bridges the dimensions. Mithra is therefore associated with the Holy Grail, which in itself is indeed the heavenly connection to earth that humanity enjoyed in full consciousness prior to the horror of its severing.

The rites of Mithra were mysterious and hidden. Nothing has come down to us from anecdotal history or from any kind of textual record regarding the ceremonies of Mithra.

Nevertheless, whilst writing Kick Ass AngelsI was given a number of simple rites that can be used to help those who seek to connect with this most glorious angel. Mithra teaches us secrets about the magic mirror, and the golden twin, and about the supreme spiritual force of sun–bathing!

A rite of protection I would like to include one here, the briefest and simplest of all. It is a simple rite of protection. We call on Michael, Shekinah

Claire Nahmad and Mithra to protect us in any situation where we feel the need. We see the descent of a golden triangle that covers us from above the head to beneath the feet. The triangle is transparent and clear. Its point reaches into the heavens, and, if you look down at your feet after invoking it, you may well see a point descending into the earth, located in the middle of its base.

If you place your two forefingers together above your conjoined thumbs, stretching the thumbs across but not downwards, you will see the shape of the divine triangle that Michael, Shekinah and Mithra create between them for our perfect protection of mind, body and soul. You will notice that it is similar to the symbol of Spades in the card deck (for this deck bears the secrets of the Grail). If you look closely, you will perhaps be able to see that the shape resembles a tree in its full summer foliage.

That is the mystery of Mithra: that together with his ‘parents’ he forms the sign of the Tree of Life, the symbol of the Great Mother – its upper point rooting us into heaven, its lower point rooting us into the Earth. © 2013 Claire Nahmad.

The words seem so simple.

This is knowledge that was passed down to me from my father. Yet, today, those simple words — and sentiments — are so forgotten.

My father, a big, raw–boned man with giant, calloused hands big as catchers’ mitts and shoulders broad enough to carry my sister and me as kids around the yard for an hour without tiring, grew up on a farm in Mississippi. Despite moving to the city and working behind a desk in his adult years after World War II, he still had a lot of ‘country’ in him. Some of it was, well, rather rude — others of it, wise. As deep and fertile as the soil, as lasting as the seasons.

Earth centred lore from a loving father It was my father who taught me how to ‘taste’ soil to see if it ‘was any good.’

If the soil tasted flat, it needed fertilizer; metallic, it needed more organic matter; if it tasted tart, it needed lime. His method was intuitive and, I guess, a matter of taste. Literally. I still rely on the agricultural service’s testing to make sure.

My father was one of those people dispossessed by industrial agriculture, leaving the farm behind. Machines would do farm work; humans weren’t needed. When the men came home from war in his generation, the big chemical companies and save war machine manufacturers had to have41% something to do, so they converted their weapons of death to weapons of agriculture.

Instead of bombs and tanks and explosives, they turned their swords into ploughshares by manufacturing trucks, tractors, and farm chemicals: herbicides, pesticides and synthetic fertilizers that, yes, killed the soil even as it made it bounteously fertile. It’s no coincidence that even today’s marketing for agriculture often relies upon analogies of ‘winning the war’ against the ‘enemies’ of crops: hungry bugs, infertile soil, rampant weeds.

This scorched earth policy of agriculture has resulted in bounteous yields for the planet. It also has so scarred the land, polluted the soil, befouled the air, and helped extract, burn and deplete fossil fuels that scientists now suggest this ‘New

Honour the Seed Age’ we live in to not be one of peace and love but of permanent scarring of the planet. They even have a name for it: the Antropocene, a geologic age that started with the invention of agriculture and may well end only after the demise of humankind.

eople ask me all the time, ‘How did you become a shaman?’ And it’s not an easy question to answer.

Do I tell them that I had always felt and been, different – that I spent decades on a spiritual search and had to face many challenges in life, or about experiencing the menopause at the ridiculously young age of 13, or of seeing my father suffer great pain for nearly thirty years? Or do I tell them about the time I gave up my search, when I yelled to God that I had had enough, that I couldn’t do it anymore and was giving up, stomping off on holiday to Peru to forget all about it, only then to find, at the highest point of Machu Picchu, the answer I had been searching for all along?

Guided by a vision This is the truth. At Machu Picchu, I arrived at the highest point hoping to find out some information about this place I had wanted to visit for the last five years, only to find the tour guide had finished speaking and I had to climb back down again! Concentrating on not slipping on the ancient steps, a flash of red caught my eye and to add to my annoyance I saw what I believed to be twenty men dressed as Inca staring at me. Thinking they were some cheesy tourist attraction I resolved not to have my photo taken with any of them. But something made me look again, and to my surprise I saw that they were fading in and out, as if on an old fashioned television screen, finally fading away completely. One magnificent man covered in bright golden armour remained only a few feet away from me. The power emanating from him was staggering, I had no idea who he was – a chief or a king perhaps – and no idea how I should behave, but I knew one thing for sure – I must not break eye contact with him. My mind raced alarmingly, my knees trembled and tears streamed down my face, but my green eyes locked fiercely onto his black ones and as our gaze met, an electric blue ball of light formed between us. Suddenly, his arm shot out and he pointed at me, ‘You!’ he boomed, ‘will follow this path – and we will help you!’ And that was the moment, the moment I had been waiting for all my life. I knew I was to follow the path of the shaman, even though it meant waving goodbye to a six figure salary and throwing myself into the unknown. Or was it the known?

It took me two years to find out that the man was in fact an ‘Apu’ – an embodiment of the spirit of Machu Picchu itself, and that what I had experienced was known as an ‘estrella’ and this was the usual way for a shaman to be called to the path. Years later I have found out that the Apu was true to his word because I have been helped in my work, tremendously. After my training, clients came immediately, from nowhere, and six months later I was working six days a week helping people worldwide to heal the burdens of their past and move closer towards wholeness, towards the lives they had dreamt of and more importantly, towards the lives they deserved.

One day a literary agent found me and asked me to write about my story and my work. And so I did. At first I wanted to write about my philosophy which had helped me on my journey and my clients on theirs. And then someone said that they would love for me to share my client’s stories and my clients, (who range from 0 –90 years of age and come from all walks of life and from all races and religions) kindly allowed for me to share some of their stories in the hope that it would help others to learn from them. And I was happy with the way the book was going until one day a client cried, telling me that she could not tell me her story, because she was so ashamed and flawed and I was

Connect to the Earth and Heal

B

y learning how to connect with the Earth, you’ll discover just how soothing, strengthening, and healing the Earth is. It will totally change the way you regard the ground under your feet and your relationship to the planet you live on.

Returning to the bosom of Nature For most people, reconnecting with Mother Earth usually means camping, hiking, gardening, going to the beach, or pursuing some other activity that returns us – in body and soul – to the bosom of Nature. The reconnection we talk about in this book is something different.

By reconnection we mean taking off your shoes and socks and sitting, standing, or walking barefoot on the ground, something that is absolutely free and available (of course, where safe and comfortable). The reconnection can also involve the use of conductive bed sheets or floor pads linked by wire to a ground rod outside your house or office, or plugged into a wall outlet with a modern Earth ground system.

Either way, we call this reconnection process ‘Earthing’ or ‘grounding,’ terms we use interchangeably. They simply mean you are connected to Mother Earth. What you are doing is akin to what is well known in the electrical world as a grounding, the common practice of connecting equipment and appliances to the Earth to protect against shocks, shorts, and interference. Applied to people, Earthing naturally protects the body’s delicate bioelectrical circuitry against static electrical charges and interference. Most importantly, it facilitates the reception of free electrons and the stabilizing electrical signals and energy of the Earth. Earthing remedies an electrical instability and electron deficiency you never knew you had. It refills and recharges your body with something you never knew you were missing... or needed.

Vitamins from the ground Exposure to sunlight produces vitamin D in the body. It’s needed for health. Exposure to the ground provides electrical ‘nutrient’ in the form of electrons. Think of these electrons as vitamin G – G for ground. Just like vitamin D, you need vitamin G for your health as well.

As you will read in this book, the results of Earthing often translate into a significant improvement – even total transformations – in health and vitality. One patient, a thirty–six year–old woman with advanced multiple sclerosis (MS), was so happy about her improvement after Earthing that she once ran out of her house, stood in the middle of the street, and screamed to all her neighbours to get grounded. She said she wanted to start the ‘barefoot revolution’ and teach everyone how to get well. She had tried Earthing out of desperation – something someone had told her about – after a doctor advised her to purchase an adjustable bed, a large screen television, and

to make herself as comfortable as possible. MS doesn’t get better, the doctor told her. In her case it did, and dramatically so.

Another woman spent over five years with debilitating pain, inflammation, fatigue, and sleep problems after a serious car accident.

Despite a long career in the healthcare industry, she found herself locked in an exhausting struggle to regain her health. She went from one practitioner and treatment to another. ‘Like Humpty Dumpty in the nursery rhyme,’ she said, ‘all of the king’s horses and all the king’s men could not put me back together again.’

Unable to work, she found herself instinctively drawn to lying in the grass or walking barefoot on the beach. In 1999, a friend gave her a conductive bed pad. She slept on it nightly, and within months her pain, fatigue, and sleep problems vanished.

‘After years of pills and failed costly treatments, all I did was lay down on my bed and sleep!’ she said. ‘I believe our bodies have the ability to recover from almost any condition if we relieve imbalances caused by stress. To do this, we must provide our bodies with essential natural elements, including clean air, proper nutrition and pure water, and the missing link, our connection to the natural electrical rhythms of the Earth.’

The missing link in the health equation Even athletes, who operate at the most intense levels of physical human performance, have learned to ground and plug in to the natural energy of the Earth. From a group perspective, perhaps the most dramatic test of Earthing’s effectiveness was demonstrated by victorious American–sponsored cycling teams at the Tour de France. The extreme physical and mental stress in this grueling race often causes sickness, tendonitis, and poor sleep among competitors.

They tend to experience slow wound healing from accidents. In the 2003 to 2005 races, and again 2007, team cyclists were grounded after their daily competition. They reported better sleep, significantly less illness, practically no tendonitis, dramatic recovery from the day’s racing, and faster healing of injuries. The practice has now been found to be so beneficial that many top athletes – including swimmers, NFL football players, triathletes, and motorcycle racers – routinely Earth themselves.

Earthing is simple, basic, and powerful.

We regard it as a genuine missing link in the health equation, something with astounding potential to do much good for humanity.

Connecting to the Earth – either by being barefooted outside or in contact with a grounded device inside – doesn’t cure you of any disease or condition. What it does is to reunite you with the natural electrical signals from the Earth that govern all organisms dwelling upon it. It restores your body’s natural internal electrical stability and rhythms, which in turn promote normal functioning of body systems, including the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, and immune systems. It remedies an electron deficiency to reduce inflammation – the common cause of disease. It shifts the

nervous system from a stress dominates mode to one of calmness and you sleep better. By reconnecting, you enable your body to return to its normal electrical state, better able to self– regulate and self–heal.

In 1863, the eminent biologist T. H. Free Your Voice: Learning from the Birds

natural songs have inspired me. When I was small, I talked to the birds and they talked back to me. They became my secret religion.

I would sit on the stairs of our weekend home and listen to their songs for hours.

When I was five years old, nature was my sanctuary, and the mystery of listening became the gateway to my deepest inner world. My top–secret sonic meditation was to earnestly attend to the space of time between one song and the next from the same bird. It thrilled me to discover that the space in between was not always the same – what in music we refer to as periodic rhythmic pulse. The birdsong were so beautiful, and it was captivating for me to discover this ‘space in between’. The appreciation that nature is not linear was the awakening of musicality within my five–year– old self. The cycles of the creative imagination seem to have the same nonlinear, poetic nature.

Another fun sonic game was to imagine what the bird was saying and to create fantastical stories based on the call and response among birds. But my favourite listening experience led me to discover the freedom of my voice and its connection with my own wild nature. I would echo the songbird with my voice and engage in a nuanced dialogue that would continue the next day, and the next. I adored this story singing – my first experience of sacredness in music – and I still play this listening game with the same wonderment and devotion.

The birds made me so happy I wanted to learn how I could use their special magic to make other people happy. As a singer, I wondered how I could soar to such heights with my own voice. As a voice teacher, I wondered how I could assist others in allowing their voices to fly. My fascination took me to many world paradises in search of particular bird songs. For many years I researched the human voice, determined to explored every aspect of sound it can utter.

Who is singing?

Keep on knocking, and the joy inside will eventually open a window and look out to see who’s there.

RUMI, translated by Coleman Barks I noticed that singing in a slow, sustained, and sliding manner induces a profound shift in emotions and states of consciousness. In the system of practices that I designed, the voice wanders through a combination of long tones, trancelike repetitive patterns, devotional chants, indigenous songs, invocations, and textural poetry. Through working with the voice in this way, the realm of sounding becomes a state of consciousness – a kind of trance – where the attention is not on the Self, but in the experience of Sound. Free from selfish demands, the voice soars and releases

divine tones and songs. We wonder, Who is singing?

Many times I hear my students ask, ‘Who was that? . . . Was that me?’ I tell them, ‘Yes, it was! You were just listening focused only on sound, and your voice responded with confident freedom.’

The practice of being in sound, dwelling in sound, becomes a devotional gift. We begin to realize that we are not singing, but calling in divine qualities; we are not performing but transforming – simultaneously playing and praying. Here there is no singer, only breath, attention, and tone.

In this meditation–like state, singing becomes a doorway to deep inner silence, where we are one with pure vibration. The heart is open, the voice is open, the hands are open, the eyes are softly closed – we experience no fear. Our breath is the breath of God. Singing in this way clears the mind of everything else but sound – instantly. Abiding in the true nature of the mind – empty and clear as crystal – we soon experience the energizing power of the voice.

Freedom settles in and we allow for more and more of this irresistible joy – the joy I first heard in the music of the birds. We open ourselves to the mystery of whoever is singing!

Every single idea we received was brilliant and very much appreciated by us all! We’ve tried to fit in as many of your responses as possible on this page. And throughout 2013 we’ll be working on making them a reality.

Use other senses to connect Connecting is not only about sight (the written word) but also about sound and touch. Whilst we have yet to discover “feelmail” your emails could contain a voice message or podcast to download that will help you connect with your Tribe at chakra level so that we will hear the human being and feel the vibration. Use technology, crowd–source Posing the question suggests that on an unconscious level Cygnus feels a little distant from the wider Cygnus Tribe, this would be natural on one level seeing as much of the wonderful work you do does not involve one on one contact, so to speak, directly with the tribe – so the % of that aspect sounds like it needs to be increased – I think that could perhaps be achieved by looking at how technology could help free up more of your time for relationship development – its wonderful what computers can help us achieve – see the article on angel channelling in today’s (1st Dec 2012) Observer for a great example of this. Involving volunteers might be a good way forward, you pay their expenses (travel, lunch etc) and they get valuable work experience and the feel good factor of spreading the word. Some work could possibly also be automated – have another fresh look at how similar businesses do more with less – Cygnus’s founding and continuing focus on core values will guide the process.

Good luck, I’m sure lots of useful, practical and most importantly realistic suggestions will arrive, in a variety of forms!

Catch the Approaching Wave I will begin with an image of soft clay. The source of all is a large ball of clay and all living beings are small pieces in a myriad of shapes and sizes. The illusion is the feeling of separateness, we need the understanding that all is one (unity consciousness).

If a child squashed all the clay together, each piece would rejoin source blending instantly, because all consists of the same substance.

With each piece of clay, consciously formed and experienced, more is learnt about the nature of the substance, knowledge is gained. Physical life is a form of play, intended to be joyful. In an instant it can be realised that all negativity, in all its forms, is just illusory, just resisting our innate flexibility and becoming inflexible, set in our ways, like dried out clay. But the addition of a little water (light in motion) and some manipulations/adjustments and time, the flexibility can and will, sooner or later return. The Cygnus review has acted and can continue to act as ‘a little water’ reachable when a person realises they are dry, thirsty.

But the Cygnus review must itself remain truly flexible into 2013, as new understandings and new technologies filter ever faster into our society, it must move with the times that are about to move as they have never moved before. Soon words of truth will at last be able to be spoken freely within mainstream media, the Cygnus review would be a wonderful television program at this time, viewers being hungry for knowledge and to learn of sources of information
