WHITE COAT
CEREMONY MD Class of 2024
Over the last century, the white coat has come to symbolize the physician’s commitment, compassion, and authority. MCOM ALUMNUS, CLASS OF 1987
THE WHITE COAT CEREMONY Welcome to the 24th White Coat Ceremony at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine sponsored by Tampa General Hospital. Members of the Class of 2024 receive their first white coat as an emblem of their new commitment as physicians. Through this ceremony and in the presence of family members and friends, first-year students pledge to balance excellence in science with compassionate patient care. The ceremony helps identify the characteristics of the complete doctor and provides a contract for professionalism and empathy in medicine. The event is designed to establish a psychological contract for beginning medical students that stresses the importance of caring as a significant aspect of curing and the primacy of empathy in the doctor/patient relationship. This rite of passage was originated by The Arnold P. Gold Foundation, based in Englewood, NJ. The Gold Foundation provided the lapel pins.
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is a public, not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering humanism in medicine. It was established in 1988 by Dr. Arnold Gold along with several colleagues at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, his wife Sandra O. Gold, EdD, and a few dedicated community leaders and philanthropists. The goal is to influence the way physicians are trained from the very first day of medical school, throughout their four years of medical training, as well as during internship and residency programs. The Gold Foundation currently supports the White Coat Ceremony at more than 100 schools of medicine and osteopathy throughout the United States.

THE OATH OF COMMITMENT USF Health Morsani College of Medicine
In the tradition of Hippocrates, I solemnly swear by all that I hold most sacred to fulfill the following Oath and written covenant according to my ability and judgment: I dedicate myself to and will bring honor and integrity to the privileged Profession of Medicine. I will be just and generous to my colleagues and will lead those who follow me in the paths of Medicine as my generous predecessors have guided and led me. I will recognize the limits of my abilities and will seek guidance and instruction eagerly and humbly from my teachers, fellow physicians, other health care professionals and patients. I will be familiar with past and current practices and will commit myself to lifelong learning, listening, observation, and study in order to improve my own skills and contribute to the development of new practices for the future. I will dedicate my career to improving the quality of life for those who seek my care, regardless of their circumstances. In addition to providing high standards of treatment for my patients, I will be attentive to lifestyle choices and health promotion practices that can make important differences for patients, families, and communities. I will ensure that my patients are well-informed about their medical care and will strive to earn their trust and inspire their confidence. I will hold paramount the autonomy and best interests of my patients and will treat them with respect, empathy, and compassion. I will adhere at all times to principles of patient privacy and confidentiality. I will remember the complex and wondrous nature of the human condition. I will strive to understand individual difference, to be non-judgmental and without bias, and to promote and nurture the overall health of my patients. I will expand my knowledge and understanding of cultural differences so that I can appreciate and contribute wisely and more fully to my community’s diversity and richness. With full knowledge that I will be held accountable for any transgressions and in the presence of my teachers, classmates, family, and friends, I solemnly promise to fulfill the obligations represented by this Oath of Commitment.

THANK YOU A very special THANK YOU to our White Coat Sponsors! Today, the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine presents 193 first-year medical students with their first white coat. Each coat symbolizes a rite of passage, the beginning of a professional life in health care, and a lifelong connection to the college. Thanks to our presenting sponsor, Tampa General Hospital, and generous alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and friends, the White Coat Sponsorship & Scholarship Program has raised more than $189,000. Every students’ white coat in the Class of 2024 has been sponsored and the additional funds have established the MCOM Class of 2024 Endowed Scholarship Fund. At a time of record medical student indebtedness, the need for scholarships has never been greater—thank you! This tradition ensures every student knows they are joining a generous, welcoming academic community that is invested in their success and fosters a culture of philanthropy that inspires students and alumni to pay it forward to the first-year students who succeed them. For more information on this program, please contact Wyndham Randall at 941.544.4310 or wyndham@usf.edu.
