Amazing Grace Edna Wilson Mosley A Tribute to

1925-2014

Colorado Black Women for Political Action is honored to pay tribute to our friend, the Honorable Edna Wilson Mosley – civil rights leader, humanitarian, and political trailblazer, who passed away on August 26, 2014. Throughout her life, Edna served as a strong, passionate and influential advocate for progressive social change. She leaves a distinguished legacy of positive influence on the lives of women, children and families across the greater Denver-Aurora metro area and the State of Colorado. She is survived by her husband and fellow civil rights advocate Lt. Col. John W. Mosley, (Ret.), her three children: Eric Mosley, Brian Mosley and Edna (Lorette) Futrell; ten grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her eldest son, John Gregory Mosley. As a civil rights leader and humanitarian, Edna served many organizations with distinction, including the NAACP, the Urban League of Metropolitan Denver, Inc., Denver Sister Cities International, Inc., the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission of the University of Denver, Tuskegee Airmen, Citizens Concerned About Minorities in Aurora, Colorado Black Women for Political Action, Colorado Supreme Court Nominating Commission, Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority, and the Community College of Aurora Advisory Board. As a proud Coloradan and pioneering citizen of the world, she led the highly successful Royal Pacific Cultural Exchange Project for Denver Sister Cities, led several delegations to Nairobi, Kenya, and accompanied Governor Roy Romer on a trade mission to China to develop cultural exchange with Colorado. She was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and co-founded the Colorado Women’s Bank. As a political trailblazer, Edna was elected in 1991 as Aurora’s first African-American city council member. During her twelve years on the city council she was known as a peacemaker who was able to achieve results, often dealing with contentious issues by finding common ground and building coalitions through effective consensus-building. Whether serving in the forefront as an elected official, or serving with influence in the background, Edna has been a friend and mentor to many prominent political leaders, including the Honorable Wellington Webb and the Honorable Michael Hancock. Her influence is broad, deep, and timeless. Edna Wilson Mosley leaves an important legacy for us all. She led us with her vision for a better Colorado. She led us with integrity, compassion, intelligence, and grace. She enriched our lives, and we will miss her. Her spirit now lives in our hearts. Securing Our Future | 3

Phenomenal

Woman By Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size But when I start to tell them, They think I’m telling lies. I say, It’s in the reach of my arms, The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Men themselves have wondered Phenomenal woman, What they see in me. That’s me. They try so much But they can’t touch I walk into a room My inner mystery. Just as cool as you please, When I try to show them, And to a man, They say they still can’t see. The fellows stand or I say, Fall down on their knees. It’s in the arch of my back, Then they swarm around me, The sun of my smile, A hive of honey bees. The ride of my breasts, I say, The grace of my style. It’s the fire in my eyes, I’m a woman And the flash of my teeth, Phenomenally. The swing in my waist, Phenomenal woman, And the joy in my feet. That’s me. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Now you understand Just why my head’s not bowed. Phenomenal woman, I don’t shout or jump about That’s me. Or have to talk real loud. When you see me passing, It ought to make you proud. I say, It’s in the click of my heels, The bend of my hair, the palm of my hand, The need for my care. ’Cause I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me. Copyright © 1978 by Maya Angelou.
