2 | “Protecting Our Future”

November 3, 2013 Greetings,

Welcome to the NAACP Denver Branch’s Freedom Fund Luncheon. We are united this afternoon to recognize the importance and continued struggle of civil rights in our community and our nation.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was established in 1909 and is the oldest and largest civil rights organization. The NAACP’s mission is to ensure the economic, educational, political and social equality and rights of all people as well as eliminate racial discrimination. Today we gather in unity for this Freedom Fund Luncheon and break bread with new members, existing members, potential members, businesses, community organizations as well as the general public. This luncheon allows us to continue the dream of those who have gone before us as well as recognizing those whose shoulders we stand on.

The theme of today’s luncheon is “Protecting Our Future” and we welcome our speaker Attorney Daryl Parks. Attorney Parks is the managing partner of Parks and Crump, LLC of Tallahassee, Florida which is the law firm that represents Sabrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, the parents of Trayvon Martin. This afternoon, we extend our sincerest gratitude to our generous sponsors and donors whose contributions made today’s Freedom Fund Luncheon possible. Everyone present at today’s luncheon plays a role in advancing civil rights—here in Denver, Colorado. We thank everyone for supporting the Denver Branch of the NAACP as we strive to eliminate discrimination and achieve equality and justice for all in the Denver metropolitan area. I am particularly grateful for the work of the Freedom Fund Luncheon Committee for their vision in making the unimaginable possible as well as the hard work of each and every member of the Denver Branch’s Executive Committee. Thank you for your attendance and enjoy this enlightening and thought-provoking luncheon. Sincerely,

Rita R. Lewis, Esq. President

Benediction

Lift ev’ry voice and sing, Till earth and heaven ring. Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, High as the list’ning skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chast’ning rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might, Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee, Shadowed beneath thy hand, May we forever stand, True to our God, True to our native land.
