MEET LOUIS YIANNAPIS Outsider Art Studio, Nicosia

Louis Yiannapis is a Cypriot artist based in Nicosia. He works from his own art studio, ‘Outsider’s Art Studio’, which is open to the public and displays a wide range of his own eccentric and surreal paintings. He is a playful character with strong messages conveyed in each of his paintings. His work is often considered to be controversial while at the same time, it is incredibly thought-provoking and full of deep emotion.

Yiannapis’ work is popular with Cypriot, Greek and international collectors. From 1992 to 1995, Yiannapis studied icon painting at the Emmanuel Panselinos School of Byzantine Icon Painting. In 2009, he joined and still is a member of the CO.BR.A Artistic movement, from which, “The founders came from … the Flemish group Reflex, the Danish Høst and the Belgian ‘Revolutionary Surrealist Group,’ three movements in opposition to the dictates of Geometric Abstraction and Socialist Realism.”.

ART THERAPY FOR THE MIND AND SOUL

Yiannapis works with many leading art dealers, including, K.Kalai and the auctioneers, S. Kalais, for selling paintings to art collectors throughout Europe. He has also been a member of the New York Outsider Artist team, following the personal recommendation of the founder, Loui Vittonet, since November 2011. He has taken part in multiple group art exhibitions across Cyprus, at Thiseas Art Gallery and Pegasus Art Foundation in Limassol, and the Tehnis Dromena Gallery in Nicosia. For nearly 15 years, Yiannapis has also worked with mentally and physically abused children who have been raised in institutions in Cyprus. He teaches them how to freely express themselves using Art as a form of Therapy for the Mind and Soul. Many of these are orphans and live troubled lives with nobody to guide them. Some children have been severely mistreated and removed from their family environments. Yiannapis has also worked with children suffering

daily with severe Schizophrenia and Depression. “It is not easy working amongst the doctors and nurses, especially when I do not agree with their methods of pacifying them, to maintain control of these already maltreated children,” Yiannapis stated. The children’s strong influence on Yiannapis’ own art style is clearly visible to the naked eye. Yiannapis has a unique, inimitable style of painting which uses explosive colours to communicate direct messages to the world. A selection of his paintings are also available for sale at Chakra Fine Art Gallery in Paphos.

TECHNOPOLIS 20 CULTURAL SPACE

AN OPEN SPACE OF CULTURE, ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE

Technopolis 20 is a trendy venue located in the Pano Paphos area, not too far from the law courts. The cultural centre was launched in 2014 by Markella Neocleous and Marina Symeonidou who have known each other since Kindergarten. They are two friends who both shared the same vision, which was to create an open space of culture, accessible to all. Their primary mission is to “promote classical and contemporary culture, to support Cypriot artists and to cultivate artistic culture further”. The building itself is imposing. Technopolis is housed in a preserved and renovated neoclassical mansion which was built in 1920. The building offers a variety of spaces which can be used together or individually for an event. The room at the centre of the building is the main stage venue for performances. This space has witnessed mainly musical concerts, literature events, lectures and theatrical productions. There is a larger studio which is suitable for screenings and workshops, and further exhibition and seminar rooms. Very often these rooms have been used for excellent art exhibitions. During the summer months, Technopolis 20 has a big garden where it continues its music concerts and open-air film screenings. Since opening, they have held over five hundred events and collaborated with numerous artists from both Cyprus and abroad. The last five years have been focused on all kinds of art, mainly musical concerts (classical, jazz, ethnic, traditional and contemporary), film screenings, art exhibitions, theatre and art performances, book presentations, family events, workshops, seminars, corporate events and much more. Going forward into 2020, Technopolis looks forward to their many events which will take place and have made plans to extend their sponsorship programme, which means that its artistic programme can be enriched and further developed.
