HE ISLAND could request a bailout by international lenders by the end of this week, once an assessment by EU and IMF is complete, finance minister Vassos Shiarly said yesterday. “The troika team has been in Cyprus for a few days. We are making very good progress, and I hope and anticipate a positive outcome toward the end of this week,” Shiarly told reporters in Brussels shortly before a meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN). He did not elaborate. The finance minister was in the Belgian capital chairing ECOFIN. Impressions on the progress of negotiations are changing by the hour; just a day earlier, media reports strongly suggested that a deal with the troika was nowhere near. Mixed signals appear to have become the order of the day. On Monday the EU’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn seemed to be growing impatient with the pace of Cyprus’ bailout request up to this point. “It would have been important to achieve an agreement on the memorandum already earlier, because the situation is rather difficult, the economic and financial situation, it’s rather difficult,” Rehn said in Brussels when asked about a bailout for Cyprus. “But things are now moving forward,” he added. The official’s comments

came amid mounting speculation here as to when an overall bailout deal could be clinched. The next scheduled meeting of the Eurogroup – before which a bailout deal is put for initial approval – is on December 3, although reports yesterday suggested that an extraordinary meeting of the group could be arranged for December 12 speciﬁcally to discuss Cyprus. IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde left a small window of opportunity regarding aid to the two main Cypriot banks, which may be concluded within a month. “As you know there is an assessment of bank recapitalisation needs that is ongoing at the moment that is due to be concluded later in November, early December probably. That’s an important factor to really assess the size of what is needed to be done as far as the banking system is concerned in Cyprus,” Lagarde said. She was alluding to an asset review of Cypriot banks by investment company Pimco; the assessment will determine the extent of the banks’ bailout – the immediate cause behind the island’s request for assistance. Meanwhile the troika teams continued their contacts here with a series of governmental agencies and regulatory authorities. Yesterday they met with ofﬁcials of the Securities and Exchange Commission to discuss issues relating to money laundering. There followed meetings with the Planning Bureau of the

A NEW Zealand court ordered an anti-monarchist yesterday to stay away from Britain’s Prince Charles and his wife Camilla after he was charged with planning to throw horse manure at the visiting royal couple. Sam Bracanov, a 76-yearold with a history of protest against the British royal family, pleaded not guilty to preparing to commit a crime, a day after he was arrested in Auckland. The royal couple had not yet arrived in New Zealand’s largest city. Bracanov was ordered to stay at least 500 metres away from the royal couple as part of his bail conditions. He was ordered to re-appear at the Auckland District Court later this month. Sitting outside the courthouse, Bracanov said he would have thrown the manure at Charles, the longest serving heir to the British throne, and his wife had he not been arrested. “I make it liquid, like porridge,” he told reporters. “I would have done it.” Bracanov has used sweetersmelling ways to express his anti-royalist feelings in the past. He was convicted and ﬁned for spraying air fresheners at Prince Charles to “remove the stink of royalty” during a previous visit to Auckland in 1994. But New Zealanders are generally staunch supporters of the monarchy. A poll conducted by Television New Zealand before the royal couple arrived last week showed 70 per cent of respondents want to keep Queen Elizabeth as head of state.

The troika is said to be revisiting the issue of seizures of properties held against bad loans. In its economic adjustment programme for Cyprus, delivered to the government in July, the troika had advised that “strong efforts should be made to maximise bank recovery rates for non-performing loans, while minimising the incentives for strategic defaults by borrowers.” It proposed that “the administrative hurdles and legislative framework currently constraining the seizure and sale of loan collateral will be amended such that the property pledged as collateral can be seized and offered for sale within a maximum time-span of 1.5 years.”

But the government wants to extend the period after which banks can seize and sell such properties, to ﬁve years. Moreover, it proposes that owner-occupied housing be exempted from any asset seizures. Reports yesterday said the international lenders have somewhat softened their stance and are now willing to extend to two years the seizures period for owner-occupied housing. Today the troika experts will be meeting among themselves to take stock of the bailout negotiations that began on Friday. They will also likely be meeting with the government’s negotiating team, comprising the ﬁnance minister, the commerce minister, the minister of labour and social insurance, the government spokesman and the Under-Secretary to the President. Heading the troika mission to Cyprus are: IMF economist Delia Velculescu; Philipp Rother, head of the Fiscal Surveillance Section in the Fiscal Policy Division of the European Central Bank; and Maarten Verwey, the European Commission’s Deputy DirectorGeneral for Economic and Financial Affairs.

Power cut 90 times in one month ‘Hard to detect technical problem caused outages’ By Bejay Browne THE Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has promised to look into ways of at least informing customers of major power supply faults after residents of a number of Paphos villages experienced around 90 power cuts in a month. Simou resident Nick Newton and his wife Anne reached desperation point after they were subjected to 89 power cuts between October 9 and November 11. “This has been a nightmare for my friends and I as well as my neighbours, both in our village and surrounding villages. We have proof of the number of cuts which have been taking place as some of us have burglar alarms that send text messages when power is lost to the house,” Newton said.

BAD WEATHER Acting EAC spokesman Yiannis Tsouloftas conﬁrmed the number of cuts and put them down to technical problem that had been very difﬁcult to detect, “connected with the overhead line which supplies these villages”. “The problem became apparent every time there was bad weather,” he said, adding that staff had tried to solve the problem as soon as they became aware of it but the “tricky technical fault was well hidden”. According to Newton some of the cuts were of a short duration but others were for as long as eleven hours. “It is not only the disruptions and inconvenience that these interruptions cause but also the damage caused to computers, internet ra-

Can you imagine resetting the electronic clocks in the house 90 times in one month?” The Newtons have already had to repair one of their computers and throw away all of the food from the top shelf of their freezer after one of the more lengthy cuts. Newton said: “we would like the EAC to explain exactly what is happening to the electricity power supply in the villages of Simou, Lasa Fyti and Ayios Dimitrianos. We have tried to ﬁnd out information but time and again were merely told it’s a fault and we don’t know how long it will take to ﬁx.” Tsouloftas said on November 11, the area was hit by a power cut again, “so we visited the area to thoroughly inspect the overhead line. Each and every insulator and piece of equipment was checked, we had to interrupt the supply for safety reasons.” Since then, he said, there has been no further cut to supply. The Newtons say that if they and others affected by the cuts had at least been given some warning by the EAC it would’ve been helpful. “It has been driving us all crazy, why couldn’t the EAC post a notice on their website for instance.” Tsouloftas promised he would personally look into ways in which the EAC can better inform customers in cases of major instances. Newton added: “we are told that we pay the highest prices for electricity in the EU so we should not have to endure this from this monopoly. It appears that we are paying Rolls Royce prices and getting a Reliant Robin in return.”

Turkey looking to end bankrolling of north By Stefanos Evripidou TURKEY WANTS to stop bankrolling the regime in the north by introducing a series of privatisations in key sectors, it was reported yesterday. According to Turkish Cypriot press, the Turkish diplomat stationed in the north, Halil Ibrahim Akca, called for a reduction of the ﬁnancial assistance given by Turkey to the Turkish Cypriots. The diplomat reportedly spoke about the need to redirect the hundreds of thousands of dollars in Turkish aid given annually to the breakaway regime from paying the salaries of public sector workers to investment and growth in the private sector. Akca said Ankara will no longer ﬁnance airports,

electricity production, telecommunications and the ports in the north, instead encouraging their privatisation. He further highlighted that when Ankara hears of Turkish Cypriots spending money south of the buffer zone in the governmentcontrolled areas, this makes the Turkish government more reluctant to continue propping up the regime. The Ankara government, and in particular its Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, believes the Turkish Cypriot authorities spend too much of the approximately US$600 million worth of aid it gives on public sector salaries. Tomorrow, Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership will celebrate 29 years since the unilateral declaration of independence of the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern

Cyprus’ which the United Nations Security Council condemned in two separate resolutions. However, relations between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots have become increasingly tense in recent years as the latter warn of losing their identity as a result of direct rule from Ankara and the continuous policy of sending mainland Turks and Turkish private capital to the north of the island. Early last year, Turkish Cypriots held a number of mass rallies in north Nicosia, with thousands of people ﬁlling the streets, protesting against an Ankara-inspired economic austerity package and against the privatisation of key enterprises being sold off to mainland Turkish business interests. Demonstrators held banners calling for self-rule,

and against interference by Ankara. Rally-goers carried banners calling on Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party to “get your hands off the Turkish Cypriots”. Some protesters were seen attempting to put up the Cyprus Republic ﬂag on the walls of the Turkish ‘embassy’ in the north, to the displeasure of the mainland Turkish press. In turn, Erdogan brazenly called Turkish Cypriots “ingrates” for protesting on the one hand while being fed and maintained by Turkey on the other. The Turkish PM further raised the ire of Turkish Cypriots by replacing his ‘ambassador’ to the north with Akca, the chief architect of the austerity package, who made the recent comments on the privatisation of the north’s key sectors.

AN INITIAL round of negotiations with the companies that were awarded offshore gas exploration licences wrapped up yesterday, amid fresh reports over the selection of a French-Russian consortium for the Block 9 prospect. At the Commerce Ministry, a government-appointed negotiating team held talks with representatives of the TOTAL-NOVATEC consortium that was selected for the Block 9 concession, followed by a meeting with Total E&P Activities Petrolieres that was picked for the Block 11 licence. On Monday, negotiations were held with ofﬁcials of the ENI-KOGAS consortium selected for the licences for blocks 2 and 3. Sources told the Cyprus Mail that full-blown negotiations would get underway in about a fortnight; yesterday the selected companies were asked to come back in two weeks’ time with improved proposals, regarding both the ﬁnancial and technical aspects of their bids. Once the negotiations begin in earnest, they could take weeks or months.

Commerce Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis said recently that the contracts should be signed in early 2013. The four offshore prospects are contiguous, lying north and north-east of Block 12, where US firm Noble Energy has a concession to drill and has reported significant gas finds. Block 9 is considered to be the ‘prime cut’ of the four prospects, having received eight bids in total. But questions are being asked after it emerged that the government altered the order of ranking of the bids for Block 9, eventually picking the TOTAL-NOVATEC consortium despite it being ranked fourth or fifth. The government has denied anything untoward in changing the order of ranking for Block 9, arguing that its final decision took into account additional parameters, such as matters of national security. Two separate assessments of the bids were made: one by the French consultancy Beicip Franlab, the other by the Energy Service of the Commerce Ministry. But the final decision rested with the Cabinet, on the recommendation of the commerce minister.

Buffer zone infringement THE TURKISH military yesterday altered the status quo in the buffer zone by entering no man’s land to put up barbed wire around a well. Turkish soldiers were seen by Greek Cypriot farmers driving up to the well in the buffer zone, around 500 metres from the village of Avlona, at around 8.30am yesterday. They got out and set up a wire perimeter around the well which supplies water to Avlona village in the occupied areas. The Cypriot authorities informed the UN of the infringement in the buffer zone. According to the state broadcaster last night, the National Guard was put on alert while extra security measures were reportedly taken in the area.

Daily Phileleftheros yesterday published what it claimed were the full data on the respective scores awarded by Beicip and the Energy Service. The TOTAL-NOVATEC bid scored 227.7 points, 50 points short of the topranked bid submitted by the Italian-Korean consortium consisting of ENI and KOGAS. A breakdown of the scores showed that TOTAL-NOVATEC’s technical tender got 60.6 points, compared to ENI-KOGAS’s 60.8. On the ﬁnancial tender, TOTALNOVATEC scored 162.1, to ENI-KOGAS’s 216.9. The paper said also that TOTAL-NOVATEC’s proposal for a signature bonus was 400 per cent lower than that of ENI-KOGAS. The report went on to ask whether, during the negotiations that have now begun, the French-Russian consortium would be able to up its offer to meet that submitted by the topranked bidder. Phileleftheros said moreover that some of the companies not selected for the four licences were now gathering data with a view to contesting the competition process.

Man jailed for attacking University study hopes to figure out how girlfriend with hammer extreme temperatures may be killing you A 28-YEAR OLD man was sentenced to seven years in prison yesterday by the Paphos criminal court which found him guilty of attacking his girlfriend with a hammer. Viorel Vasile Valacu from Romania was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm after his girlfriend sustained serious head injuries following an attack with a lath-hammer. At around 4am on October 8, a 38-year-old woman was taken in a private vehicle to Paphos general hospital’s accident and emergency department with serious head injuries. The on-duty doctor sent her to Nicosia general hospital for surgery. In the meantime, she gave a statement to police, saying that her 28-year-old boyfriend who she lived with assaulted her with a lath-hammer. Four days later, on October 12, Valacu tried to cross to the north, where he was arrested by Turkish Cypriot police and handed over to the UN. The UN then handed the 28-year-old to Nicosia CID at the Ledra Palace checkpoint.

THE HEAT may be killing you, and University of Nicosia researchers are out to ﬁgure out how. The University of Nicosia’s research foundation is leading a project on climate change and public health in order to “draft policy recommendations for addressing extreme situations,” Associate Professor Haritini Tsangari has said. According to a specially created statistical model aiming to isolate the relationship between temperature and mortality, temperatures higher than 33.7 degrees Celsius increase the risk of death. “The ﬁrst results of the statistical model showed that indeed high temperatures

have a signiﬁcant effect on mortality,” Tsangari said. By the time it gets to 42 degrees Celsius, the risk of death is 40 per cent higher than it is at 35 degrees, according to the model. The model accounts for humidity, seasonal trends “or even the day of the week”, Tsangari said referring to weekend sunbathing.

Police told the Cyprus Mail they had discovered 11 knives and a knuckleduster during a search of the tourists’ hotel room hours after the stabbing. The detainees told police they bought the knives in Ayia Napa as presents for their friends back home in London. Police also conﬁrmed that the knife used to stab Collins was purchased at an Ayia Napa souvenir shop and found at the scene of the crime.

Following the original eight-day remand issued by the Famagusta court on November 5, the three were reremanded for a further two days yesterday. During the ﬁrst remand hearing, one of the tourists, 19-year-old Mohamed Abdulkadir Osman, appeared in court with a gash on his forehead and his left hand bandaged. The court heard that he told police he had stabbed the victim in self-defence when his friends were allegedly assaulted by a group of British soldiers. Osman claimed he waved a knife solely to intimidate them. But one “lunged at him” and as “a result the knife went into the man who was attacking him”, according to a “voluntary statement” Osman made to police. The other two in remand, both 17-years-old, admitted being at the scene of the crime but denied any involvement in the incident. The three face possible charges of premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of an offensive weapon.

THE THREE British tourists arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 19-year-old British soldier during a nightclub brawl in Ayia Napa were re-remanded by the Famagusta district court yesterday for a further two days. The court gave police another two days to complete the ﬁle on the killing of Fusilier David Lee Collins who died minutes after being stabbed in the chest early Sunday morning on November 4 following a club brawl. Collins, from Manchester, died just hours before he was due to be deployed to Afghanistan with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. The teenage soldier had been clubbing with three other soldiers when they became involved in the brawl with three British holidaymakers from London. Police are investigating allegations that the fracas started after taunting

related to regional rivalry between London and Manchester with the two groups allegedly arranging to meet at a nightclub in Ayia Napa to settle their difference after an argument late on the night of November 3. The suspects, two of Pakistani origin and the third of Somali descent, were taken into custody minutes after the stabbing and are being held at separate police stations in Dherynia, Xylofagou and Ayia Napa.

By Peter Stevenson A 24-HOUR fundraiser for people affected by the crisis will be held on December 7 by the Pancyprian Volunteerism Coordinative Council (PSSE). “The fundraiser will follow the model of those that were arranged to help those hit by the tsunami in south-east Asia in 2005 and by the fires in Greece in 2007,” president of PSSE, Stavros Olympios said. Volunteers will man busy road junctions to collect donations of €2 and €5 from drivers. There will also be a charity phone line so people can call up and pledge money as well as bank accounts where people can deposit their contributions. The fundraiser will take place was part of Volunteer Week, which takes place every year between December 1 and 8. “In Cyprus in 2012 hundreds of people are living the nightmare of poverty,” Olympios said launching the event yesterday. “Children and families and people from different vulnerable groups need our help,” Money generated by the fundraiser will go towards the creation of centres for immediate social aid in each city of Cyprus. These will provide people who are struggling economically to get immediate help without having to go through enormous amounts of red tape. Events will also be organised to promote these centres and let people know where they can find them. “Money isn’t always enough,” Olympios said, therefore professionals such as doctors, lawyers, psychologists and social workers will be recruited to offer their services free of charge to the public. “I’m sure that if we act together, with a spirit of solidarity and cooperation, we can help our society recover,” the council’s honourary president and first lady, Elsi Christofias said.

PAPHOS IS being put firmly on the map of low-cost airline destinations thanks to the scantily clad cabin crew of budget airline Ryanair. The latest edition of the now famous Ryanair Charity Calendar - featuring the airline’s more presentable cabin crew wearing as few garments as you’re allowed to take on a Ryanair flight without extra cost - was shot entirely on location in Paphos. Last June, over 20 cabin crew models arrived in Paphos with photographers to shoot next year’s calendar, the proceeds of which will go to Polish charity TVN Foundation. The airline hopes to raise up to €100,000 for the Warsaw-based Foundation which aims to purchase hospital equipment to help children suffering from mucoviscidosis (cystic fibrosis). Ryanair’s cabin crew have already raised over €500,000 since the first calendar was published in 2008. Around 10,000 copies are circulated per year at €10 each and usually sell out pretty fast. The 2012 edition had already sold

out by May. According to the low-cost airline’s website, the latest calendar shot in Paphos “is hotter than ever, featuring the sexiest Ryanair cabin crew stunners in swimwear and lingerie”. The calendar is on sale onboard Ryanair ﬂights, on its website or from TVN Foundation centres across Poland. Ryanair is noted for its racy calendars and last year came under ﬁre from the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK over images of female cabin crew posing in their underwear, which were published in the UK’s top-selling newspapers. The Paphos Regional Tourism Board, Hermes airports and Capital Coast hotel hosted the photographers in June for the photo shoot. An announcement released yesterday welcomed the promotion of Paphos as a destination through the calendar which includes shots at locations across Paphos, including Aphrodite’s birthplace, Petra tou Romiou. Paphos became Rynair’s 50th base earlier this year, from where it was operating 15 destinations.

Cars illegally running on LPG, House hears No legal framework for vehicles to run on alternative fuel PEOPLE have started to illegally convert cars to run on liqueﬁed petroleum gas (LPG) and petrol stations are selling LPG to drivers, members of the House commerce committee yesterday said. The allegations were made by LPG companies who plan to convert cars or sell LPG once a legislative framework is set up that will lift a ban in effect since 1977, the Green party’s MP George Perdikis said, without naming the companies. Cabinet said in September that it would allow the introduction of LPG cars, a cheaper and greener fuel alternative, but has already pushed back the deadline for creating the legal framework. The commerce ministry told lawmakers yesterday their proposals for the legal changes will be ready by the end of 2013. But Perdikis said stakeholders yesterday told the committee that some crews

were already converting cars, “which is illegal”. Drivers need to get permission from the road transport department to convert cars and they cannot convert their cars to run on LPG before the law changes, Perdikis said. He said cars that are already built to run on either petrol or LPG are allowed although they cannot run on gas. Custom changes are not allowed, Perdikis said. LPG-converted cars could be dangerous, said acting head of the commerce committee, DISY’s Zacharias Zachariou. “People are using these cars without the right infrastructure and proper checks and so several of our fellow citizens are in danger,” he said, adding that law breakers could get their licence suspended. However, Perdikis said the committee

was not provided with any numbers or figures during the discussion except for a photograph of a petrol station in Paphos that had a sign up saying it was selling LPG. LPG can easily be found since it is used for heating purposes and by factories, Perdikis said. But because a law amendment to regulate petrol stations selling it is still pending with the state’s legal services, those selling LPG will have to be caught redhanded to be punished, Perdikis said. LPG is a blend of propane and butane that can be produced from natural gas or as a by-product of oil refining. Its emissions are less harmful than petrol and can be about 50 per cent cheaper than conventional fuels though fuel efficiency may be lower than either that of petrol or diesel-run vehicles. Conversion costs between €800 and €1,500 and can take place in two days.

Traffic wardens seek power NICOSIA municipality is calling for more power to its traffic wardens so they can improve traffic flow in the capital and safety levels for those using the roads. The traffic wardens can issue parking tickets but cannot fine a driver for going the wrong way down a one-way street or ignoring traffic signs. They also cannot fine a driver for moving in pedestrianised areas or for breaking any traffic violation while moving. The municipality called for its traffic wardens to be able to issue on-thespot fines for traffic violations “to improve traffic control and improve traffic safety.” Legislation only allows trained police officers to issue traffic violations fines, a police spokesman said.

Water cuts WATER supply will be cut in Limassol tomorrow between 8am and 1pm, the Water Board said yesterday in an announcement. Qatada was released on bail after judges on Monday approved his appeal against deportation to his home country of Jordan to stand trial for plotting terrorist attacks. An imigration court allowed his appeal, saying despite assurances to Home Secretary Theresa May, it could not be sure that evidence from witnesses who had been tortured would not be included in a retrial in the Middle East country. Edward Devenney was ready to pass encryption and code-breaking data to Russia

Edward Devenney, 29, was trapped in an MI5 sting and was ready to trade encryption and code-breaking data. He was also prepared to betray details of an operation by HMS Trafalgar and â&#x20AC;&#x153;the comings and goings of two nuclear submarinesâ&#x20AC;?. The Old Bailey heard no harm was done to UK interests, but Devenney will be sentenced later on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;potential damageâ&#x20AC;? he could have caused had he succeeded in passing the secrets to the Russians.

The submariner had ďŹ rst contacted a foreign embassy in November last year, offering highly sensitive information. The secret services set up the sting in January by sending ofďŹ cers posing as Russian agents to meet him. Devenney is said to have offered them information on nuclear submarines, including the op-

eration of electronic warfare systems and periscopes. He is also accused of gathering data on encryption and cryptography technology between November 18 last year and March 7 this year. Devenney, pleaded guilty to one charge under the 1911 OfďŹ cial Secrets Act and a second count of miscon-

World WORLD TODAY Woman survives wolf attack A 56-YEAR-old Russian woman has told how she survived an attack by a wolf outside her sister’s home in the province of Dagestan. The animal bit Aishat Maksudova on her arm and her leg and she fell to the ground, crying out for help from other villagers. No one was in earshot, so she reached for an axe she had brought along to repair a fence and hit the wolf over the head several times until his teeth unclenched. The wolf later died. The farmer has become a hero in the Caspian Sea province that lies east of Chechnya. She is still being treated for her wounds at a local hospital after the incident. Doctors said she is recuperating well.

Human-raised elephant cub dies AN elephant calf that was separated from his herd in Malawi and raised by a human “mother” for months has died. Jenny Webb, who raised the calf, said it died on Monday night “in her arms”. She said the elephant had been sick with colic. In February, Webb adopted the elephant, which had been named Moses after being found in the grasses of a riverbed by game rangers at Vwazi Wildlife Reserve in northern Malawi.

‘Idiot’ driver A WOMAN caught on camera driving on a pavement to avoid a Cleveland school bus that was unloading children has been forced to stand in the cold at an intersection holding a sign warning people about idiots. A Cleveland Municipal Court judge ordered 32year-old Shena Hardin to serve the highly public sentence for one hour on two days this week. The sign she had to hold read: “Only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus.”

Russia paroles scientist jailed for spying A RUSSIAN court yesterday paroled a physicist convicted in 2004 of spying for China, a case rights activists said was an example of Vladimir Putin’s use of the courts against opponents. Rights campaigners welcomed the three-year reduction of Valentin Danilov’s 14-year sentence but said it did not signal the president would halt what they say is the Kremlin’s practice of using the judiciary to stiﬂe dissent. In his 60s, Danilov is expected to be freed in 10 days. He watched the hearing from his prison in Siberia’s Krasnoyarsk region by videolink. “I think he was quite shocked when he heard the opinion of the prosecutor who ... supported the appeal (for early release),” his lawyer Yelena Yevmenova said on NTV television. He and other scientists had said the satellite technology data he passed to China more than a decade ago was declassiﬁed and that the case was politically motivated.

The Kremlin has denied inﬂuencing the courts and says it is wrong to describe the treatment of Putin’s opponents as a clampdown on dissent.

Haqqanis open to talks under Taliban THE Haqqani network, seen as the most lethal insurgent faction in Afghanistan, would take part in peace talks with the United States but only under the direction of their Afghan Taliban leaders, a top faction commander said yesterday. The rare flexibility exhibited by an Afghan militant commander was accompanied by a warning that the Haqqanis would keep up pressure on Western forces with high-profile attacks and would pursue their goal of establishing an Islamic state. The Haqqanis, who operate out of the unruly border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan, say they are part of the Afghan Taliban and must act in unison in any peace process. The commander, who declined to be identified, accused the United States of being insincere in peace efforts and trying to divide the two organisations. “However, if the central shura, headed by Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, decided to hold talks with the United States, we would welcome it,” he told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed, referring to the militants’ leadership council. The Taliban said in March they were suspending nascent peace talks with the United States.

Alkhatib seeks recognition, arms from Europeans Britain, France set conditions for support By Yasmine Saleh THE leader of Syria’s new opposition coalition urged European states yesterday to recognise it as the legitimate government, enabling it to buy the weapons it needs to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad. Britain and France appeared to set further conditions, notably that it ﬁrst rally support inside the country, before they grant full recognition to the Syrian National Coalition. And, like the United States, Europeans are still reluctant to arm rebel forces which include anti-Western Islamist militants. Western caution, and an Arab League endorsement that stopped short of full recognition, indicate that the coalition forged with

such difficulty in Qatar two days ago may yet find it hard to win wholehearted support, even from its allies. Speaking to Reuters by telephone as Arab and European ministers met to discuss Syria at the Arab League in Cairo, Mouaz Alkhatib, the Damascus preacher elected unopposed on Sunday to lead the new group, asked for diplomatic backing. “I request European states to grant political recognition to the coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people and to give it financial support,” he said. “When we get political recognition, this will allow the coalition to act as a government and hence acquire weapons and this will solve our problems,” Alkhatib added. France’s defence minister and Britain’s foreign minister both said that forming

the new group under Alkhatib, a moderate noted for his embrace of Syria’s religious and ethnic minorities, was an important milestone but not sufﬁcient for full recognition as a government-inwaiting. So far, concerted action on Syria has been thwarted by divisions within the opposition, as well as by big power rivalries and a regional divide between Sunni Muslim foes of Assad and his Shi’ite allies in Iran and Lebanon. Russia and China, which have lent Assad diplomatic support since the uprising erupted in March last year, have shown no sign of warming towards his Western- and Arab-backed opponents. Lebanese analyst Nadim Shehadi said Western conditions were just as great an obstacle to resolving the Syria crisis.

Meanwhile, at least 2.5 million Syrians are believed to have ﬂed their homes because of civil war, aid groups said yesterday, more than double previous estimates Where once the United States sought to convince Iraqis and Afghans that US military intervention was for their own good, now Syrians seeking democracy and freedom were trying to persuade a reluctant Washington to act, he said.

“The US is playing hard to get,” he said. “It’s like you have to pass a test to show you are united, have leadership, are not Islamist jihadists ... and the US is still hesitant as though you have to ‘deserve’ all that before they intervene.”

ISRAEL and the Palestinians stepped back from the brink of a new war in the Gaza Strip yesterday, sending signals to each other via Egypt that they would hold their fire unless attacked, after five days of mounting violence. The tacit truce arrested an escalation to all-out fighting, but both sides remain armed and primed for another round in the unresolved conflict that has festered since Hamas Islamist militants took over the enclave in 2007. Ismail Haniyeh, prime minister of Gaza’s Hamas government, praised the main armed factions in the enclave for agreeing on Monday night to a truce. “They showed a high sense of responsibility by saying they would respect calm should the Israeli occupation also abide by it,” he said. Haniyeh spoke during an unannounced visit to a hospital to see wounded Palestinians. Some Israeli leaders say it is time to resume the controversial tactic of assassinating Hamas leaders.

FISCAL brinkmanship in Washington is already affecting the U.S. economy as worried businesses invest less in equipment, Bank of America Corp Chief Executive Brian Moynihan said. US lawmakers were set to return to the capital yesterday, with a seven-week deadline to agree on averting the so-called fiscal cliff - scheduled tax hikes and budget cuts, set to take effect in January, which threaten to tip the nation into another recession. “That uncertainty continues to hold back the recovery,” Moynihan said yesterday at an investor conference in New York. The bank’s clients need more clarity before they make investments, he said. Moynihan and chief executives of other major financial services companies sent a letter last month to President Barack Obama and members of Congress urging them to find a bipartisan solution. The parties involved know a resolution is needed in the first quarter of next year, Moynihan said, adding he remained optimistic about the outcome. Moynihan, the opening speaker at a conference hosted by his bank, spent most of his presentation highlighting his efforts to streamline Bank of America, which required two bailouts during the financial crisis. In his nearly three years as CEO, the bank has shed more than $60 billion in noncore assets and businesses, generating more $12 billion in Tier 1 common capital. In its continued downsizing, the bank plans to reduce its mortgage servicing portfolio to about 6 million loans, down from about 8 million now and 12 million at its peak, Moynihan said.

THE reporting method used by industry media in the UK gas market to assess daily prices, at the centre of a regulatory probe, is ﬂawed and easy to manipulate, some traders in the sector say. The Financial Services Authority (FSA) and energy regulator Ofgem are investigating allegations made by a whistleblower that traders have manipulated wholesale prices on Europe’s biggest gas market, a trend-setter across the continent. Although the example highlighted in the probe relates to the benchmark price on a certain day being lowered and not raised, the issue is a political tinderbox in Britain, where ﬁve of the six dominant energy distributors increased retail energy bills for this winter. “I don’t think it’s possible to exaggerate how serious this would be if the allegations turn out to be true at a time when so many people are struggling to pay their bills, are making huge efforts just to make ends meet,” Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said on Sky News. The allegations have also been compared to an uproar this year over rigging of the Libor interbank interest rate, raising questions about the reliability of market mechanisms that directly affect everyday transactions by the public. Whistleblower Seth Freedman, who works for price reporting agency ICIS Heren and spoke to the Guardian newspaper, sought to show how traders submitted erroneous bids and offers at the end of the day to skew the day-ahead gas contract, which is used to guide a widerange of physical and futures gas prices. “Traders always try to jerk the day-ahead close,” the company’s founder, Patrick Heren, now retired, said on Twitter.

Greece clash revives fresh debt crisis fears By Jan Strupczewski and Annika Breidthardt A PUBLIC clash between Greece’s international lenders over how Athens can bring its debts down to a sustainable level has reignited fears that Europe’s troubles could flare up anew. Eurozone finance ministers suggested Greece, where the eurozone debt crisis began, should be given until 2022 to lower its debt to GDP ratio to 120 per cent but International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde insisted the existing target of 2020 should remain, in an unusually public airing of disagreement. Beneath her sharp exchange with Jean-Claude Juncker, who chairs the Eurogroup of finance ministers, lies a rift over whether eurozone governments need to write off some of Greece’s debt to them to make it man-

IMF ofﬁcials have pressed for such a “haircut” while Germany, the biggest contributor to eurozone bailout funds, has vehemently rejected it as illegal. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told reporters yesterday that the 2020 deadline was “a little too ambitious”. “There’s a debate about a haircut for ofﬁcial creditors. On that I will say, and most countries have said so in the past few weeks, that that’s legally not possible,” he added. Chancellor Angela Merkel has signalled she wants to keep Greece in the eurozone but is determined to avoid losses for German taxpayers before a general election in September 2013.

With so much stake, diplomats remain conﬁdent that a deal will be done to release a 31.5-billion-euro tranche of bailout money, which Athens urgently requires to avert bankruptcy. But it is a way off yet. Financial markets, which have been calmed by the European Central Bank’s pledge to buy eurozone government bonds to shore up the currency bloc, took a dim view of the failure to agree. The euro dipped to a twomonth low against the dollar and safe-haven German Bund futures rose to twomonth highs. Juncker said a further meeting of the 17-nation Eurogroup would take place on November 20 and ofﬁcials said more negotia-

tions could be required the week after that to nail down a new deal. French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici told reporters bailout money should ﬂow by the end of the month. The euro later gained some poise after a German government source said the eurozone could decide to bundle several tranches together in a single transfer of roughly 44 billion euros for Greece. But that cannot happen until the lenders reach a broader agreement. The delay left Athens scrambling to meet a 5-billion-euro bond repayment deadline on Friday. Greece sold 4.062 billion euros ($5.14 billion) of one- and three-month treasury bills yesterday and while that sale was insufﬁcient to redeem the 5 billion, the debt agency will accept additional noncompetitive bids by tomorrow, enabling it to raise the full amount.

It’s time we took finance minister Shiarly seriously SPEAKING to journalists before yesterday’s ECOFIN meeting in Brussels, Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly, the perennial optimist, said that “very good progress” had been made in talks with the troika in Cyprus and he expected “a very good result towards the end of the week.” Shiarly’s predictions, with regard to the dealings with the troika, have proved wrong so many times it is very difficult to believe a word he now says. The minister is not a liar or out of touch with reality, but he is serving under an erratic and unpredictable president who does not want to sign a bailout agreement and has been trying to avoid it. President Christofias has long given up listening to Shiarly, who is not part of the government’s negotiating team and was not even consulted when the counter-proposals were prepared. Simply put, he does not speak on behalf of the Christoifas government. Could we expect a very good result in the negotiations with the troika towards the end of the week given the way the government has been acting? At the weekend, Christofias told a gathering in Greece that the troika “is setting conditions that are very difficult to accept.” On Monday the government was leaking information that the troika’s representatives were taking “a very tough stance” while yesterday the government mouthpiece Haravghi warned of a “Terror scenario” on its front page, saying the troika’s insistence on the privatisation of semi-governmental organisations had been rejected. Meanwhile AKEL has been attacking political opponents for “embracing the positions of the troika” and for insisting there should be a deal as soon as possible. Is there an alternative? Not even the Governor of the Central Bank, Panicos Demetriades, a Christofias appointee, seems to think so. On Monday he told Sigma TV that a bailout had to be signed as soon as possible. “It is the only way to end worries about non-payment and viable debt,” he said. Everyone recognises the desperate situation we are in and the need to sign a bailout now, except Christofias and his AKEL comrades whose irresponsible populism know no bounds. It is quite incredible that they are now taking a stand against the privatisation of semi-government organisations which is necessary to make the eventual debt viable. Funds raised would constitute part of Cyprus’ contribution towards the bailout which is a perfectly reasonable proposal by the troika. The truth is there is no time left for negotiations and public posturing. The government needs to swallow its pride, forget its populist rhetoric and accept the bailout terms as its finance minister and the Central Bank Governor have been advising it to do.

Euro austerity protests are far from revolution IN a cafe near the former site of Paris’s Bastille prison, activists held a meeting last month to decide whether to join unions in protesting the French government’s belt-tightening. Only five people turned up at Cafe Maldoror, a favoured haunt of the radical left. Even in the city whose revolutionary credentials date back to the 1789 uprising that began at the gates of its famous gaol, calls to build a European-wide popular front against the toughest budget cuts in a generation are falling on deaf ears. “In France people...are frustrated, they are worried about the country and about their economic situation, but for the moment ...most people are not looking for revolutionary change,” said Gaston, a 36-year-old librarian at the meeting who took part in a poorly attended protest at the Bastille last year. Millions of Europeans feel impoverished as countries which broke budget rules for years are prodded into public spending cuts to win back investor confidence in their sovereign debt. Bursts of street anger have rocked Greece and Spain, two southern countries whose citizens are paying dearly for the profligacy of their past leaders. Athens police last week fired tear gas to disperse protestors throwing petrol bombs outside parliament. Strikes and marches in Greece and Spain triggered a September 26 selloff in the euro and European and U.S. stock markets. Activists want to spread the protests across Europe’s national borders. The Greek strikers were seen holding Italian, Portuguese and Spanish flags last week. But there has been little resonance on the streets of the richer nations of north Europe, whose ageing populations and politically moderate youth are less interested in protest. So far the protests fall short of antecedents such as those in 1968 against U.S. involvement in the Vietnamese war which in Europe mutated into a force for wider social change, or the 1990s anti-globalisation marches through many of its cities. Such momentum is lacking

Marches are planned but trade unions have not opted for a strike. There is even less sympathy in Germany, where many feel their country has already made the painful reforms needed on public finances and polls show strong backing for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s demands for European neighbours to do the same. Demographics may help explain why the activists are struggling to find support. In 1960, there were on average three Europeans under the age of 14 for every pensioner, European Union data show. It was this generation of post-World War Two baby-boomers who, eight years later, were the foot soldiers of the 1968 revolts. Today’s youth no longer have numbers on their side. Lower birth rates and higher longevity mean the median age in Europe has risen from 31 years at the end of the 1960s to 40 now. By 2060, there will be two pensioners for every youngster. Nonetheless, they have plenty of reasons to be angry. Youth unemployment, almost negligible in much of Europe in the 1960s, now stands at 23 percent across the 17 members of the euro zone. One in two young Spaniards and Greeks are out of work. It is also dawning on Europe’s young that the debt built up by successive governments puts their future welfare provision at risk. Those with jobs are seeing tougher labour conditions as firms struggle to compete with low-wage international rivals. While the sense of alarm has reached better-off youths in northern Europe, it is often tempered by a mood of resignation and inability to define a political alternative. “People around me are worried, particularly about the prospect of the welfare state being dismantled,” said Fa-

New York-based Sesame Workshop said in a statement that its own inquiry, including interviews with the now 23-year-old accuser, concluded that claims of underage sexual conduct against puppeteer Kevin Clash were unsubstantiated. Clash, 52, the voice of Elmo for nearly three decades, acknowledged a past relationship with his accuser but said in a statement that the allegations against him were “false and defamatory.” “I am a gay man. I have never been ashamed of this or tried to hide it,” Clash said. “I had a relationship with the accuser. It was between two consenting adults, and I am deeply saddened that he is characterising it as something other than what it was,” he said. He went on to say he was “taking a break” from Ses-

Julien’s Auctions said the price for the pinafore dress and white puffy-sleeved blouse that Garland wore throughout the 1939 film classic was in line with estimates. But it was well below the sky-high figures paid last year for Hollywood costumes worn by Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, and a similar dress worn during tests for The Wizard of Oz that fetched $910,000 in 2011. A-level exams only to schoolsreport be offered in summer January exams to be scrapped, says Ofqual By Alison Kershaw A-LEVEL students will only be able to take exams in the summer, with fewer chances to re-sit papers. Under changes recently announced by Ofqual, from next year, January exams will be scrapped. The regulator said the move would address concerns over how many times students can sit exams, by cutting the number of resit opportunities. The decision comes following a three-month consultation into A-level reform. The regulator said it is still considering further changes, such as more university involvement in the qualiﬁcations, and altering the structure of the exams. Education Secretary Michael Gove announced earlier this year that he intends to give universities, particularly the most elite institutions, “a far greater role” in designing A-levels in the future, amid concerns that the qualiﬁcations are failing to prepare teenagers for higher education. feasible” for the sector to “take ownership” of the qualifications. The Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) said the level of involvement proposed is “very high and very time consuming”, adding it is “unclear” what is meant by the support of 20 universities. Ofqual chief regulator Glenys Stacey has insisted that the consultation had shown “broad support” for more involvement from higher education. She added: “The consultation followed on from Ofqual’s research into perceptions of A-levels. “This showed that the qualifications are considered to be largely fit for purpose but that there were some structural changes that could be made to improve them. “There were also concerns expressed by teachers, employers and universities over what they term a resit culture. “Teachers in particular said that A-level students approach examinations with the expectation that they will always get a second chance. “Making improvements in these key areas is what this first phase is about and it has been widely welcomed by higher education and by many schools and colleges. “The next phase will consider further structural changes to strengthen the A-level, how higher education will be involved in Alevels and content changes where stakeholders deem that they are necessary.”

Rugby enters the Cyprus school system By Alexander McCowan IN JUNE this year, when the undefeated Cyprus rugby team played Greece at Pafiacos stadium in Paphos, there was an unusual addition to the watching crowd: the senior class of the primary school in Dhali. Accompanied by headmistress, sports staff and PTA members, they settled in to witness their first game of rugby and were stunned to observe the ease with which Cyprus disposed of the opposition. When told this was the third time the Mouflons had dumped the Greeks (72-5), eyebrows were raised and looks exchanged. “Couldn’t happen at football,” remarked one youth wearing an Omonia shirt. Four weeks later, Laurence Vasilliades, president of the Cyprus Rugby Federation was approached by the inspector for schools’ sport in Nicosia to discover if the federation was interested in introducing TAG rugby into the school system. The future of rugby in Cyprus requires the involvement of young people: two of our current internationals, Fydias Efthymiou and Marco Mladenovic are home grown through the colts system introduced by the Limassol Crusaders, but the international team needs many more, and what can be more encouraging than to start with the under 12s? Focus on Forum School FOR THE second year running Forum private school has organised a successful activity day for students and their families. Welcome scholarships for Heritage School students from Piraeus Bank led. At this level, the game is played by boys and girls. The games are scheduled to start this month and will be coached by Federation Rugby development ofﬁcer Steve Wrigglesworth, an experienced national coach. He will be assisted by Greekspeaking sports masters at the Nicosia multi-sports stadium. The inspectorate anticipates the attendance of between 5,000-6,000 pupils a week. There is a possibility the system will also be adopted by the Famagusta district schools. The Cyprus Federation has agreed to provide all equipment and personnel, and will have the Rugby Football Union’s basic instruction book translated into Greek. It’s tremendous news for the federation and the future of rugby, but it once again raises the question of expenditure. The

state is broke and so is the federation, so once again the executive is looking for sponsors. The whole programme could be covered by a few thousand euros and sponsors will have the chance of placing their logos on the tags and balls. The Cyprus Mouﬂons must be a very inspirational group of young men because not only are the school-children keen to participate, but this month the University of Cyprus have asked Laurence Vasilliades to provide coaching for the newly-formed varsity side. With the help of Cris Thoma, one of the stalwarts of the Mouﬂon pack, they are running training sessions twice weekly at the university ground. Location, location, location

ON A CRISP November evening in Nicosia theatregoers will be led under the neon-lit, concrete path. Their destination? Tivoli Luna Park. From the outside, the old amusement park with its somewhat shabby exterior and yellow iron gates looks a little unloved and run-down. But inside, this space is slowly stirring and bursting into life as Open Arts replicate Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece, The Cherry Orchard. One of the most famous and acclaimed plays of all time, The Cherry Orchard was Chekhov’s last play, ﬁrst performed by The Moscow Art Theatre, under the direction of Konstantin Stanislavski, in January 1904, shortly before Chekhov’s death. Chekhov’s poignant investigation of longing and material attachment has been translated and adapted into many languages and produced around the world, becoming a classic work of dramatic literature. Directed by Athina Kassiou, The Cherry Orchard continues to resonate with audiences more than 100 years after it was first produced. The current financial crisis makes The Cherry Orchard story particularly pertinent to local audiences. A once affluent and socially prominent family’s way of life stands on the edge of oblivion due to the changing economic and social forces they cannot control. The woes examined in the play – foreclosure, bankruptcy, unrequited love – recur in all eras. For much of the play, oddball characters fumble with ineffective plans to save their estate. Chekhov’s characters approach their situation in various ways, with denial, or with determination, or with irony. Somehow, despite everything, these charming yet exasperating people find a way to meet each new day and move forward. Although inherently tragic, this production will illuminate the eccent comedic and eccentric Chekhov’ nature of Chekhov’s rich characters. The content of the show and the space in which it is held feed directly into each other. Site-specific theatre is nothing new, but it appears to be undergoing a renaissance. Each production will host limited audience members. Every show is almost like a little haunting, as if the ghostly journey through a building is not just a physical experience but a trip into the self. Actors, dressed in retro costumes, will lead the audience members into areas of the ‘home’ where they will watch scenes and intimately experience the interplay of the characters from close range. This Greek language production shouldn’t be missed and will surely be something different for local audiences, not only because of it’s location, but also due to its funky, 70s/80s inspired costume design and modern re-imagining. Lifestyle POWER Wannabes: the Spice Girls in 1997

The Mamma Mia! phenomenon has made over £1.5 billion, but its creator Judy Craymer knew past success alone wouldn’t be enough to turn her Spice Girls musical into a hit, so she called on the funniest woman in the UK, Jennifer Saunders, to help her out. HE scene is a red velvet box at London’s Piccadilly Theatre. Two ﬁftysomething blondes are discussing their drinking habits, their love of showjumping and a weakness for BoojaBooja organic chocolates. “Geri Halliwell introduced me to them,” says one. “They’re gluten-free, dairy-free... probably chocolate-free.” It could be a sketch straight out of Ab Fab - hardly surprising when one of the blondes is Jennifer Saunders, 54, arguably the most powerful woman in British comedy, and the other is Judy Craymer, 55, producer of Abba musical Mamma Mia!. They met three years ago when Judy invited Jennifer to write the script for her new Spice Girls musical Viva Forever! It took Jennifer all of 40 minutes to sign up: “I just really, really wanted to do it. I didn’t want someone else to mess it up, although that’s a very risky thing to say.” In fact, writing Viva Forever! would prove more poignant than either of them realised. Jennifer had just been diagnosed with breast cancer - now in remission - and she began working on the musical two months into her chemotherapy treatment. It proved surprisingly therapeutic. Once a week for ﬁve months Judy would go over to Jennifer’s house and the pair would endlessly play Spice Girls songs and watch clips on YouTube. “I used to ignore the fact that she wasn’t feeling at her best,” says Judy, “and was going through this horrendous, intense chemotherapy. I’d just go over every week with nice things to eat and my iPod and say, ‘Waddaya think of this?’” Jennifer recalls: “I’d keep saying to her, ‘I might look

rough but my brain still works!’” Viva Forever! takes the same feel-good formula that worked for Mamma Mia!, weaving a storyline about female friendship and motherdaughter bonding around the Spice Girls’ hit songs, but it is not a tribute show. The Spice Girls don’t appear (the four young leads are unknowns) but there are echoes of their early career. “It dawned on me that you could use the songs to create a modern story,” explains Judy. “They

emerged pre-9/11, pre-Blair, Princess Diana was still alive, everyone was watching Sex and the City. They deﬁned an era.” And, of course, their songs drive the narrative. Jennifer loves ‘Wannabe’ – “their manifesto”. Judy plumps for ‘Say You’ll Be There’ – “because it’s written like a conversation” - and ‘2 Become 1’, “their safe-sex song”. Before writing the script, they entered the “Spice Girls coven” and interviewed all ﬁve ex-bandmates. “I joke it all started in Geri’s kitchen,”

recalls Judy. “I gave them homework and sent them 1940s Rita Hayworth movies about fame and fortune, rivalry and friendship.” “They are hilarious and talk ten to the dozen, so we split them up for the treatment explanations,” recalls Jennifer. “We saw Emma and Mel C together. Mel B ﬂew in. Judy saw Victoria.” “When Victoria was in London, I took her and her mum to see Mel C in Blood Brothers, and we all had supper afterwards,” says Judy. Then, when the ﬁrst draft of the musical was ready, Judy met Victoria at home in LA. Although they had no creative control, the Spices invested in the show (each of them is predicted to make £5 million a year from royalties), and Judy was keen to show them the script as it developed. Geri was especially involved. “She was very keen on getting the dynamic of the girls right,” explains Jennifer. “Who was whose best friend? How were they going to fall out? She stressed it couldn’t all just be nice - girls can be very mean as well and that two friends out of the group are usually closer than the others.” Ah, yes, the famous feuds (Geri walked out on the group at the height of their fame in 1998). But Jennifer insists that today the Spices are one big family: “It’s like you fall out with your sisters but you know you’re going to have to

spend Christmas with them, which means you never really fall out, you just go off in a huff for a bit. They really love and support each other.” Mel C breaks up arguments; Mel B would get out the knuckledusters if you disrespected her bandmates. Jennifer does a great Mel B impersonation. “She’s hilarious. She’ll say to Geri: ‘You went off, and you left us, what was all that about?’” Victoria is the planner. “With her fashion career she is the brand,” says Judy, “so obviously she likes to control things.” And Posh is a big fan of musical theatre. Growing up her dream was to play

the white cat in Cats – “That ﬁgures,” says Judy. “You can see that fragility” - and at the Spice Girls audition she sang Mein Herr from Cabaret. The idea of a Spice Girls musical came from the girls themselves. Judy had met Simon Fuller, the Spice Girls’ manager, at lunches over the years, but it was Geri who approached her directly. She’d read an article about Judy’s epic struggle to get Mamma Mia! off the ground, and thought she was amazing. Geri sent her a letter saying, “We love you. Woman power: Jennifer and Judy with the Spice Girls at the June launch of the musical Judy grew up in Mill Hill. She loved showjumping and dreamed of going professional, but when her horse died she switched to drama school. She subsequently got a job at the Haymarket Theatre in Leicester, alongside her childhood friend, a theatre producer called Cameron Mackintosh, and moved to London to work on the musical Cats. A year later she assisted lyricist Tim Rice, which is when she ﬁrst met Björn and Benny of Abba, who were writing the music for Rice’s musical Chess. It took her years to persuade them to give her the rights

to their songs and ten years to raise the finance to stage Mamma Mia!. She ran up a £20,000 overdraft, lived on handouts from her parents and had to sell her flat. “I had nothing to lose and I think that was a huge part of the tenacity,” she says. Since it opened in 1999, Mamma Mia! has taken £1.2 billion worldwide and is still going strong in the West End. The film version, starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, grossed over £375 million. Jennifer is the daughter of an RAF officer and remembers being a sullen, shy

child. “My mother says that I’d have to be taken away in restaurants because I’d be standing in front of tables, just looking - and I had quite a cross face.” To the horror of her mother (a teacher), she failed to get into university, but then met Dawn French at the Central School of Speech & Drama and together they answered an ad for female acts to join an experimental sketch show called The Comic Strip, where Jennifer met her future husband Adrian Edmondson. They then landed their own BBC series and the rest is history. Today, neither woman needs to work. Judy is one of Britain’s richest women (her net worth is £62 million), she lives in Belgravia and has a flat in New York overlooking Central Park. But Mamma Mia! has been her whole life for the past 14 years. Unconsciously, she says, she has been lining up a new project to fill any sense of emptiness. Single (despite being called ‘the most eligible spinster in the West End’), she would have liked children but never met the right man. Today she has a busy social life and several “honorary adoptive daughters”. “My friends’ daughters call me their London mummy. There comes a time when you’re finally quite hip.” Equally, Jennifer could easily put her feet up. When she and Dawn ended their 30year partnership four years ago, and her daughters left

the family home (a farmhouse near Chagford in Devon), she and Edmondson bought a house in London. Living in Paddington means they can walk to the theatre or a nice pub. Now a grandmother (her singer daughter Ella, 26, gave birth to son Fred in August), she adores looking after the baby and lolling about watching episodes of The Great British Bake Off. But Jennifer and Judy are

on a mission to write something that will resonate with an older female audience as well - there is a subplot in the musical about the invisibility of older women. “Every ﬁlm poster you see has a man with a gun on it,” says Jennifer. “There’s a great rant in the script about 15-year-old girls thinking it’s the height of fame to dance at the Playboy Mansion. You want to say to them, ‘You’ve got to

f*** a 90-year-old man at the end of the day. Have you forgotten it’s not all little bunnies and swimming pools, it’s some old guy with Viagra and his mates!’” Yes, the Spices were gobby and fallible, but their message of solidarity was unique. Judy recalls: “When Victoria was asked, aged 21, What are your ambitions?, she said she wanted to be as famous as Persil Automatic.” For Judy, the appeal of the Spice story is that they were “ordinary girls who lived at home with Mum and Dad, and did their own hair and make-up. Geri’s famous Union Jack dress only came about because she sewed a tea towel on to a black Gucci dress. If anything, they have got sexier - and more complex - as they approach 40. They have so much energy, get them in a room and it’s silly.” So how did they deal with a room full of excitable Spices? Judy laughs: “We would get all hot and bothered telling them about new script developments and then one day Geri said: ‘Do you know how intimidating you two can be?’ We were like: ‘Oh my God, we frightened the Spice Girls!’”

Television PICK OF THE DAY Todos Tus Muertos (LTV3, 22.00) Fact No. 1: I’m a fan of world cinema, enjoy telling people about it, and I’m quite excited by the fact that LTV are showing foreign-language fi lms every Wednesday this month (hopefully a sign of things to come). Fact No. 2: many readers of this newspaper don’t even speak Greek, let alone read it well enough to follow subtitles. Do I support the cause of Cinema, or think of my responsibility to my reader(s)? A thorny dilemma - but we live, after all, in a digital age where TV isn’t the be-all and end-all; surely I can Pick a fi lm with Greek subtitles, trusting that Anglophone readers will fi nd some other way of viewing it? Yes; but then we come to Todos Tus Muertos, a dark Colombian satire that doesn’t seem to have been released anywhere except Colombia - and presumably Greece, at least on DVD, hence this screening on LTV3. What’s the point of Picking it if no-one can track it down, at least in a format where they’ll get the most out of it? There’s no answer to that question - except to point out that the fi lm isn’t totally obscure; it played the prestigious Sundance Festival and actually won an award, Best Cinematography in the World Cinema section. One could also point out that the plot hinges on an image, and that image is so powerful it can be appreciated without un-

derstanding a word of dialogue: a big pile of dead bodies in the middle of a cornfield - a macabre, haunting image which has special resonance for Colombians (“a silent indictment of Colombia’s ongoing civil war,” says the synopsis) but will disturb anyone with eyes to see it. Our hero Salvador certainly sees it. He’s an ordinary peasant who wakes up one morning and goes to work on his land, only to come face-toface with the pile of corpses (the title translates as ‘All Your Dead Ones’). Salvador calls the cops, but it’s Election Day and no-one wants a scandal so the authorities stall for time, passing the buck and refusing to deal with the problem - and meanwhile the dead bodies stay in the field, a grim reminder of hidden reality. “A crudely conceived bit of absurdist shockorama that lays on its allegorical messages with the subtlety of a pounding to the head,” wrote critic Robert Koehler in Variety, but at least that means you’ll still get those messages even if you don’t speak Spanish - and any world-cinema initiative deserves to be Picked, especially with better-known fi lms (Vincere and Sin Nombre) coming up in the next two weeks in this slot. Elegy (LTV, 21.00) News arrives that 74-year-old writer Philip Roth has decided to retire (Nemesis will be his last novel) - and Roth’s bitter humour is much in evidence in this ﬁ ne drama (based on one of his books, The Dying Animal). Ben Kingsley is a middle-aged professor who gets involved with a student (Penelope Cruz) half his age; she loves him, and he can’t believe his luck - and becomes so convinced that she’s going to leave him that he subconsciously starts to make it happen, pushing her away with his bad behaviour. The second half goes in a different, less effective direction - but for about an hour it’s a ﬁ lm Philip Roth might be proud of. Made in 2008.

Cheri (Novacinema1, 22.00) Billed as a premiere on Nova, which is odd because it’s three years old - but maybe it fell through the cracks, despite starring the great Michelle Pfeiffer. Mich is now middle-aged, of course (51 when the fi lm was made) and it’s not ungallant to say so, because age is a constant factor in this fi ne period drama, based on a novel by Colette; our heroine’s a retired courtesan in ‘Belle Epoque’ Paris (the early 1900s) who’s asked by a fellow courtesan to take on her late-teenage son (Rupert Friend), whom Mich has known since childhood and always called ‘Cheri’. She and Cheri become lovers, despite the age difference, their relationship enduring for six years - at least till the young man’s mother forces him into a loveless marriage to the daughter of yet another courtesan. The two young people fi nding kinship in their “orphaned” lives is one of many nice touches, cheap pathos is mostly avoided, and the very last lines narrated by the brisk and jaunty voice-over with a minimum of fuss - are quietly devastating. Made in 2009.

Phone Booth (Novacinema2, 22.00) Another good choice in the 10 p.m. slot - and another underrated ﬁ lm, actually a fast-moving B-movie with a killer premise. Colin Farrell is a slick, sleazy publicist who cheats and lies his way through life - but one day he’s walking down the street, and passes by a phone booth just as the phone starts ringing. “You hear a phone ring and it could be anybody. But a ringing phone has to be answered, doesn’t it?” notes The Caller (actually the voice of Kiefer Sutherland), who only has one thing to say to Colin: hang up the phone, and you’re dead! The mystery caller is a sniper, and he’s got his riﬂe trained on our hero, forcing him to stay on the phone until ... well, till he sorts his life out (“Who Do You Think You Are?” asks a sign in a shop window), or dies trying. Lots of fun - even now, when phone booths have mostly gone the way of the horse and cart. Made in 2003.

The belief comes from scoring three tries in a 5122 loss to world champions New Zealand on Sunday and a 21-17 win on the Springboks’ most recent trip to Edinburgh, when Andy Robinson’s men responded from a 49-3 defeat to the All Blacks two years’ ago. Victory over South Africa, plus a win over Tonga on November 24, is required if Scotland are to return to the world’s top eight and avoid a poor seeding at the December 3 draw for the 2015 World Cup. Flanker Alasdair Strokosch said: “We’ve bounced back from this before and we will do it again. We will come back stronger; there’s a lot we can take from it. “We’ve beaten both teams (South Africa and Tonga) before and I’m sure we will do again.” Scotland’s loss to the All Blacks was effectively sealed by three converted tries in a 10-minute ﬁrst-half blitz. Scrum-half Mike Blair said: “We beat South Africa the last time we played them, but we’re still very aware how strong they are. “I think it will be very im-

portant against them that we don’t give them that 10minute period that we gave New Zealand. “We did a lot of very good stuff, but ultimately when you give a team three tries in 10 minutes there’s only going to be one result.” Scotland will be forced into at least one change for the Springboks Test after openside flanker Ross Rennie suffered a dislocated shoulder against the All Blacks. David Denton replaced Rennie and although he is primarily a number eight or blindside flanker, could start if Robinson opts against selecting a specialist openside against the giant Springbok pack. Glasgow duo John Barclay and the uncapped Chris Fusaro would come into contention for that role. SOUTH Africa captain Graeme Smith expects his celebrated bowling attack to raise their game in the second Test against Australia after his batsmen were forced to scrap for a draw in the opener yesterday. Much of the talk before the three-Test series was about the threat posed to Australia by Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander, the top two bowlers in the world rankings, as well as Morne Morkel, who is also in the top 10. They were put to the sword by Australia’s batsmen on a ﬂat wicket at the Gabba, however, with Ed Cowan and Mike Hussey both scoring centuries and skipper Michael Clarke plundering 259 not out. Smith was not prepared to concede the momentum had shifted to the home side ahead of the second Test inAdelaide but said he did expect better from his pace attack.

“I think we just didn’t hit our straps with the ball. Four hundred and ﬁfty was a good total, winning the toss and batting,” he told reporters. “It was a little bit damp on the ﬁrst two batting days, then it dried out nicely and certainly Michael and Cowan transferred that pressure onto us and we could have responded a little bit better. “But I’ll expect our bowlers to do better in the future.” Smith said the loss of the second day to rain when South Africa had not helped, and neither had losing JP Duminy and his occasional spin when the all rounder ruptured his Achilles in a training session after the close on the opening day. “I just don’t think we backed up well enough,” he said. “We had periods when we were good, then lost our way a little bit. Didn’t really bowl well in partnerships to create enough pressure on Australia’s batting. Certainly on day four.

“All in all, I cannot complain about our bowlers. The majority of the time they rock up and they perform extremely well. Hopefully that will happen in Adelaide again.” Smith was less than impressed with the 23 no balls bowled in the match by the South Africans, one of which cost them the wicket of Cowan early in his innings. “No balls played a big role in the game. Probably the highest scorer in the game,” he said. “From our perspective, it’s not acceptable and the guys know that. There’s a good personal responsibility there and it’s something that needs to be improved upon. “Certainly, potentially 70-4 overnight on day three and there was a great opportunity for us. We took that into our bowling the next day and just sort of meandered along.” The second Test at the Adelaide Oval begins on November 22.

WORLD number one Rory McIlroy added further accolades to his already bulging resume when he was named winner of the PGA of America Player of the Year award and the Vardon Trophy. The 23-year-old Northern Irishman, who clinched his second major title with a record eight-shot victory at the PGA Championship in August, was always likely to land both honours after triumphing a season-high four times on the 2012 PGA Tour. McIlroy followed in the footsteps of his Ryder Cup team mate Luke Donald when he became the second player to win the money list titles in both Europe and the United States. He is also a heavy favourite to become the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year, which is voted upon by tour members and scheduled to be announced early next month. McIlroy comfortably held off the challenge of Americans Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Jason Dufner, Brandt Snedeker and Matt Kuchar to claim PGA of America Player of the Year honours. He ﬁnished with 100 points while Woods ended up with 66, Masters champion Watson and Dufner each totalled 50, Snedeker earned 36 and Kuchar 34.

D’Antoni new Lakers coach The Los Angeles Lakers, in a surprise move, have named former Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni to replace ﬁred coach Mike Brown, the NBA team said. Many had expected Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson, the 11-time NBA championship winner, to come out of retirement to lead the Lakers for a third time. D’Antoni, 61, agreed to the Lakers’ job after negotiations to bring back Jackson broke down, the Los Angeles Times reported. D’Antoni, who coached at New York last season, signed a multi-year contract, according to the Lakers’ website. He had a 388-339 record at Denver, Phoenix and New York. All-Stars Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash both expressed support for the idea of playing for D’Antoni, who was Nash’s coach in Phoenix.

Striking superstars to come face-to-face By Brian Homewood NEYMAR and Radamel Falcao, two of the world’s most proliﬁc and sought-after strikers, come face-to-face when Brazil meet Colombia in the most enticing of around 50 friendly internationals being played today. Spain and Portugal both face marathon trips with the world and European champions travelling to Panama and their Iberian neighbours lured to oil-rich Gabon where Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence is awaited with feverish excitement. There are high-proﬁle games between familiar European rivals, and more exotic encounters such as the clash between Albania and Cameroon in Geneva. Only a few years ago, Cameroon would have been favoured opponents for many of the world’s top sides. But, beset by internal bickering, their fortunes have taken a dramatic turn for the worse which culminated with elimination from the African Nations Cup at the hands of tiny Cape Verde. In other games, Franco Di Santo could make his international debut as Argentina, including Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero but missing out-of-favour Carlos Tevez, visit Saudi Arabia. Brazil’s meeting with Colombia at the Metlife stadium in New Jersey brings two together two sides who have reaping the rewards of a more

positive, attacking approach in the last few months. Brazil’s search for their ideal team and a playing style which better suits their tradition appears to be bearing fruit for coach Mano Menezes, who has been greatly helped by the return of Kaka following a two-year absence from international football. They scored 10 goals in two games against Iraq and Japan last month as the OscarKaka combination in midfield and the exuberant skills of Neymar in attack proved irresistible for their opponents. The 2014 World Cup hosts and five-time winners have won their last six games and face by far their sternest test since they lost 4-3 to Argentina in June, their last defeat. Colombia, a team struggling to find their footballing identity ever since their 1994 World Cup fiasco, have come back to life under the leadership of Argentina’s 2006 World Cup coach Jose Pekerman. They have won six out of seven matches under the former taxi driver including a 4-0 win at home to Uruguay and 3-1 win in Chile, putting them firmly on course for their first World Cup appearance in 1998. The meeting of Santos forward Neymar, who has scored 16 goals in 25 internationals, and Atletico Madrid’s Falcao, both on the radars of Europe’s top sides, has added extra spice to the encounter. “Colombia have had a great qualifying campaign and will be a good test for us to know

where we are now,” said Menezes. “They have a touch of Argentina about them. They had a lot of quality before but they now they are showing far greater tactical development.” Spain, who have made a habit of visiting far-ﬂung excolonies recently, follow up trips to Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica with their game in Panama. It will not be a walkover for Spain against opponents who have reached the ﬁnal stage of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying competition and whose coach Julio Cesar Dely Valdes spent part of his playing career at Real Oviedo and Malaga. “The trip to Panama is part of a commitment by our country with other Spanishspeaking nations and, in sporting terms, allows us to prepare for upcoming matches,” said coach Vicente del Bosque. Portugal can expect a festive reception in Gabon where President Ali Bongo, a fervent football fan, is almost certain to be among the crowd. His government has spent lavishly on football projects, allowing the country co-hosted this year’s African Nations Cup and played at home to Brazil one year ago. RUSSIA coach Fabio Capello thinks today’s friendly against the United States in the southern city of Krasnodar will be a good chance to test new players in the national team before a long winter break. Capello could give international debuts to several newcomers, including Real Madrid’s Denis Cheryshev after including the 21-yearold left winger in his 26-man squad. Cheryshev, whose father Dmitry made 10 appearances for the Russian national team in the mid-1990s, plays for Real’s B team Castilla and has yet to feature for Jose Mourinho’s side. Capello could also try out Kuban Krasnodar keeper Alexander Belenov, Lokomotiv Moscow midfield duo Maxim Grigoryev and Magomed Ozdoyev as well as promising Anzhi Makhachkala striker Fyodor Smolov. The above quartet, except the 26-year-old Belenov, have been instrumental in leading Russia’s under-21 side into the Euro 2013 finals for the first time since 1998. Belenov will have a second chance to prove his worth at a high level after failing to establish himself at Spartak Moscow following a

Capello, who succeeded Dutchman Dick Advocaat as Russia boss following a poor showing at Euro 2012, has vowed to blood new players into an ageing team after his predecessor was heavily criticised for relying on the old guard too much. The Italian was quick to follow on his promise by dropping several experienced players, including former Tottenham Hotspur striker Roman Pavlyuchenko and ex-Chelsea winger Yuri Zhirkov. Former national team skipper Andrei Arshavin was also left out because the Arsenal forward has seen little action for his London club this season. Russia have made a flying start in their World Cup qualifying campaign under Capello, winning all four of their group matches to rise this month to ninth - their best position in FIFA’s world rankings in more than three years. “I didn’t want to use too many new players during important (World Cup qualifiers). It would be too risky,” the former England manager was quoted as saying by Russian media. The match will be the first between the two former Cold War adversaries since a 2000 friendly in Moscow, won by Russia 2-0.

THE Cyprus national football team host Finland in their last friendly international of the year this evening at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia at 7pm. “The national side don’t play a lot of matches each year so for that reason every single match, including this one, is very important,” said coach Nikos Nioplias. “Finland are a very strong side and it will be a good test for us. What is important is that I will have an opportunity to make changes to the regular squad as I have many young players at my disposal. I will give them a chance to show what they can do as we must work on bringing our many quality younger players into the squad,” he added. The Finns arrived in Cyprus with a squad of 21 players of which only two play in their native country. TONIGHT’S friendly match between heavyweights Netherlands and Germany in Amsterdam risks running out of strikers and flair after a growing injury list has ruled out big names on either team. The hosts, who lost to Germany in a friendly 3-0 last year and were again beaten by their eastern neighbours 2-1 in the Euro 2012 group stage, will be lacking the firepower of forward Robin van Persie and the creativity of playmaker Wesley Sneijder. Their opponents are missing nine players including Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mesut Ozil and top scorer Miroslav Klose. While it is a friendly game, any encounter between the bitter footballing rivals is all but a dull affair with both sides desperate for victory and tempers often flaring on the pitch. CHRIS Brunt has called for Northern Ireland to bring the good times back to Windsor Park. The national side have not won in their last ﬁve matches on home soil, with former manager Nigel Worthington losing his last two games in Belfast and successor Michael O’Neill presiding over two draws and a defeat to date. That sequence is a far cry from the days when the likes of England and Spain were both defeated, but West Brom captain Brunt is desperate to see a return. Djokovic dedicates his London win to ill father By Martyn Herman NOVAK Djokovic said his ailing father’s struggle with serious illness had inspired him to beat Roger Federer in a thrilling climax to the ATP World Tour Finals late on Monday night . Srdjan Djokovic was absent from his normal courtside position as his son beat Federer 7-6 7-5 at the O2 Arena and cemented his place as the world’s best player. He was not out of mind, however, and Djokovic was quick to pay tribute to his father after his gritty victory over world number two Federer, winner of the title for the past two years. “It’s been a very long year, a very long two years, but very successful two years,” five-time grand slam champion Djokovic, who ended a second consecutive season as world number one having won a career best 75 matches, told reporters. “I didn’t really know how I would follow up after my incredible 2011, but I believed that I have to use the time where I’m playing the best tennis of my life. “It was a fantastic year, where I’ve had to face a lot of difficulties off the court as well. Especially coming into this tournament, having my father fighting his own fight for health gave me extra strength that I wanted to play for him in a way. “That’s one of the reasons I really gave it all every match, especially tonight. This was a title for him.” Djokovic’s father has been seriously ill with a respiratory problem and Djokovic has spent hours on the phone over the past eight days monitoring his progress. It makes his achievement of marching to the title undefeated, having won all his round-robin matches, including one against U.S. Open champion Andy Murray, even more impressive.

“I actually feel even more satisfied right now than last year, even though I had an incredible 2011,” the 25-year-old, who won three of the four majors last year after starting the season with a 43-match winning streak, said. “I feel this year, considering the circumstances that I had to face on and off the court, expectations, all these things, I believe that this year has been even more successful for me.” Djokovic battled back from 3-0 down in the first set and 5-3 in the second to claim his first year-end title since 2008 in Shanghai, and with it the $1.76m jackpot for remaining unbeaten. “I was playing really great tennis throughout the whole week,” Djokovic said of his run in London, where he had never previously made the final. “The first match, you know, still feeling a little bit rusty on the court. But I won against Andy (Murray). “That was a big confidence booster for me. You know, every match after that I felt like I played really very close to the top of my game. “Against Roger, whenever I needed to, to come up with some really good shots, really focus myself and get every ball back in the court, I’ve done that. I cannot be more thrilled.” For 31-year-old Federer, who claimed his seventh Wimbledon title this year and temporarily dislodged Djokovic from the No.1 spot to break Pete Sampras’ record of 286 weeks at the top of the rankings, there was frustration but few regrets. “You have to get over the finish line in the set and then obviously in the match,” Federer, who also reached the Olympic singles final where he was beaten by Murray, told reporters. “He was better at that. “It was great intensity, a good crowd. So it was fun playing. I think it’s been a fantastic season to be part of.”

NGLAND captain Steven Gerrard has been passed fit for tonight’s friendly against Sweden after a scan on his knee and is set to become the sixth Englishman to win 100 caps. Gerrard took a knock during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday but the English Football Association said the midfielder would travel. “Steven Gerrard has been cleared to travel with the England squad to Sweden having undergone a precautionary scan on Monday afternoon,” the FA said on their website (www.thefa. com). The news will come as a relief to manager Roy Hodgson, whose squad has been depleted by the withdrawals of five players including Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott. Gerrard’s 17-year-old Liverpool team mate Raheem Sterling could win his first cap, as could Everton’s Leon Osman, 31. Osman, who played for England as a schoolboy, was a surprise inclusion in the squad, but told reporters while he was looking forward to winning his first cap he was delighted his old rival Gerrard was about to join the century club.
