RESIDENT Demetris Christofias’ meeting with party leaders over the troika negotiations yesterday was tense and filled with recriminations. It became particularly hostile when the political leadership heard the bailout amount, which is around €17 billion – €10 billion for the banks, €6 billion for maturing state debt, and €1.5 billion for public finances – reports said. At this point Christofias reacted, reports said, slamming his hand on the table and asking how the amount became so high. Reports also claimed that the president twice said that he would not sign a bailout deal that was not manageable. At some stage he was openly critical of Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly and Central Bank governor Panicos Demetriades whom he likened to his predecessor Athanasios Orphanides who had irked Christofias repeatedly by urging him to shore up public finances. He also appeared angry at members of the negotiating team. Christofias reportedly admitted he did not have an alternative plan in the event that an agreement with international lenders was not achieved. But he said he had money for December. The leaders were told of

the risks to the banking sector’s liquidity if there was no agreement. Speaking after the meeting, main opposition DISY leader Nicos Anastasiades said his main concern was the troika leaving the island without a prospect of them returning and the effects on the banking sector and the state’s ability to meet its obligations. He said he handed the president a letter asking, among others, “what the plan is to tackle the possibility of a deadlock in light of the dangers ahead of us.” Anastasiades said he expected the government to inform him of what they were planning to do to cover their obligations towards civil servants but “more importantly how to meet the banks’ potential needs in the event there is a deadlock”. “Everyone must assume their responsibilities and we are not the ones governing,” the DISY chief said. “It is the government that must take the decisions and submit the proposals on how it tackles a dead end. We are ready to provide support.” DIKO leader Marios Garoyian said Cyprus was playing with fire. “It is not the time to hide; it is the time to tell the truth and face it,” Garoyian said. The DIKO leader suggested that the government had no plan in the event the bailout talks fell through. “It is time to have a specific plan, a specific framework of

Swedish woman charged for having sex with skeleton By Mia Shanley A WOMAN in Sweden has been charged with engaging in sexual activities with a human skeleton and could face jail time for disturbing the peace of the dead, a Swedish prosecutor said. Police found a full human skeleton, skulls and a box containing other human bones by chance after responding to a call saying a shot had been ﬁred from her ﬂat in the city of

Gothenburg. They also discovered CD-ROMs titled “my necrophilia” and “my ﬁrst experience”, and photographs of the woman engaging in various sexual activities with a skeleton, a court document on the prosecutor’s website showed. It said the woman had handled the bones in a “shameful” and “unethical” manner. “She is interested in the dead,” Prosecutor Kristina Ehrenborg-Staffas told Reuters. “She has pictures of

morgues, churches and graveyards.” The 37-year-old unemployed woman has also been accused of selling human bones to an artist in Uppsala in eastern Sweden this past summer. The woman has said she bought the bones, which were around 50 years old or more from different parts of the world, over the Internet for historical purposes and says that it is not her in the photographs. Her trial will take place next week and she faces a maximum of two years in prison if found guilty.

A NEW hairdressing service on offer for senior citizens at the Nicosia Multifunctional Centre is proving particularly popular, and yesterday received an ofﬁcial seal of approval with a visit by Nicosia mayor, Constantinos Yiorkadjis. Free hair cuts and blow dries are now available at the centre as part of the municipality’s daytime programme to provide care, support and entertainment for senior citizens. “Working with the elderly on a daily basis I marvelled at how many would come in

all prim and proper but then gradually their appearances began to suffer slightly,” said founder of the salon and one of the operators of the senior citizens’ programme, Christina Karamani. “When I asked the ladies why they were no longer able to keep up their appearances they told me that they couldn’t get to their hairdressers anymore or that they simply couldn’t afford it, so I saw the opportunity to offer them these services for free,” she explained. A special hair dressing session was put on yesterday for the mayor who was accompanied by Costas Pistos, the head of Nicosia’s Technical

School which often cooperates with the centre. “The programme has been a success so far and it brings the people working at the salon great satisfaction to see the women with such big smiles on their faces after they’ve had their hair done,” Karamani explained. “It really builds up their self-esteem.” The salon began working on November 1 and has averaged between 15-20 visitors each day. To qualify for a free visit to the salon you must be a pensioner, a member of the Nicosia Centre for the elderly and reside in the Nicosia district. The salon is open to the public too at

The mayor spoke about the responsibility of Nicosia’s citizens. “For Nicosia council, the response to its citizens’ problems and ensuring social cohesion is a priority even under the difﬁcult ﬁnancial circumstances they are experiencing,” Yiorkadjis said. Remanded for the fatal stabbing of neighbour Welfare services defend care of mentally ill suspect By Alexandra Anastasiades LIMASSOL criminal court remanded in custody a 22-year-old man with a history of mental illness for eight days yesterday in relation to the fatal stabbing of his neighbour. The suspect’s lawyer did not contest the police’s request for a remand and asked for his client to be examined and kept under psychiatric supervision, as he is suffering from psychiatric problems. Eleftherios Constantinou allegedly stabbed and killed his 23-year-old neighbour, Apostolis Athanasiou, late on Monday night after a row over the way Athanasiou had parked his car. The victim, who had just returned home, had parked his car in the ﬁeld adjacent to the suspect’s house. Following the argument between the neighbours, Athanasiou proceeded to move his car but the suspect returned to the scene with a military knife with which he allegedly stabbed the victim. The victim was rushed to Limassol

general hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. An autopsy revealed that the victim died of massive bleeding as a result of a stab wound that pierced his chest and heart. Constantinou told the court yesterday that he hadn’t wanted to kill Athanasiou. “I didn’t want to kill him but he stomped on me five or six times and hit me on the head and my right eye,” he said. But the CyBC reported that medical tests revealed no sign of injuries on Constantinou. The court heard how after the first argument, Constantinou had gone towards his home issuing threats. He resurfaced with the military knife and got into another argument in the presence of Athanasiou’s parents. His mother then tried to push way Constantinou asking him to leave. The victim rushed to intervene and was fatally stabbed. The suspect who immediately fled the scene after the stabbing was tracked down on Tuesday around 3pm, sitting

in his car on a dirt road off the PlatresKyperounda road. Police said the suspect had a history of mental illness. In February 2011 he had stabbed and injured a 48-year-old man under “similar circumstances”. After being examined by a psychiatrist, Constantinou was referred to Athalassa Psychiatric ward in Nicosia where he remained for some time. The case was set to go to trial in March 2013, two years after the incident took place. “All steps had been taken by the welfare services as provided by law,” the welfare services told the Cyprus Mail yesterday, when asked what measures were taken by them to protect third parties from the potentially dangerous behaviour of Constantinou. This case bears similarities with a murder that took place in Nicosia in January, when a 25-year-old man, who was also under the care of the welfare services, killed his sister following an argument over a laptop. He was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment in May.

State and troika in final push for common ground Still at odds over privatisations, wage indexation, pensions and gas proceeds By George Psyllides THE government was last night still trying to ﬁnd some sort of common ground with international lenders on certain issues threatening to bring Cyprus’ bailout talks to a deadlock. The two sides were still at odds over privatisations, wage indexation, pensions and the proceeds from natural gas exploitation. Last night, talks were held at the hotel where the heads of the troika delegation were staying in a bid to resolve the outstanding issues as Nicosia appeared to be running out of time. Despite some signs of optimism, it did not appear that the two sides had managed to bridge all their differences. Until late last night, there had not been any reports regarding the process. Reports said the heads of the troika delegation were scheduled to leave the island today. Other members of the group already departed in the past two days. But reports suggested last night that negotiations would continue remotely if a deal was not achieved last night. This was despite warnings that the economy and the banking sector could suffer further from a delay in announcing an agreement. Fitch ratings yesterday downgraded Cyprus further into junk territory citing the uncertainty over the cost of bank recapitalisation and de-

lays in negotiating a bailout, which has contributed to deteriorating economic conditions. Earlier, there were signs that negotiations had come to an end, as grim-faced party leaders walked out of a meeting with President Demetris Christofias saying the government did not have a contingency plan in case the talks fell through. Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou later said that the troika was not leaving immediately. “We are in negotiations with them. I have said that some very difficult issues we disagree on are under discussion and we will continue this effort,” Stefanou said. The spokesman said that the troika’s departure did not mean efforts would stop. Stefanou said a lot of ground had been covered in the negotiations and convergences had been achieved. The spokesman took a shot at party leaders who put all the responsibility on the government but did not offer any suggestions on how to proceed. Negotiations with the troika kicked-off at the finance ministry early yesterday morning and were not without incident. The state broadcaster reported that Trade and Industry Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis had words with the troika over their demand for natural gas proceeds to be used to repay the country’s debt. Sylikiotis’ outburst almost caused the troika to leave,

New rating is a downgrade further into junk FITCH ratings yesterday downgraded Cyprus further into junk territory citing the uncertainty over the cost of bank recapitalisation and delays in negotiating a bailout, which has contributed in deteriorating economic conditions. The agency said it has cut Cyprus’ rating to ‘BB-’ from ‘BB+’ saying it reflects the materially weaker macroeconomic outlook, “a fiscal budget that has significantly underperformed expectations and the continued high level of uncertainty over the costs associated with bank recapitalisation.” “The delay in negotiating official support has contributed to the deteriorating economic conditions and raised uncertainties about public sector reform and the correction of macroeconomic imbalances,” Fitch said. “Cyprus’ fiscal position has deteriorated significantly during 2012.” In the April Stability Programme, the government’s stated goal was to reduce the fiscal deficit to 2.6 per cent of GDP for this year from 6.3 per cent in 2011. Finance ministry data show that for the nine months to September the fiscal shortfall already exceeded the level for the same period last year, Fitch said. “Fitch expects the deficit to be over 5 per cent for 2012.” And this despite austerity measures, including wage freezes and an increase in VAT by 2 percentage points to 17 per cent, said the agency. The weaker growth outlook will increase the challenge of reducing the fiscal deficit and the public debt ratio, which is set to remain substantially higher than before the recession, Fitch said. It said negotiations with the troika have lasted longer than expected despite recent progress on setting key capital ratios for banks and the system’s supervision, and presidential election.

After obtaining a search warrant, police searched the man’s house and confiscated 15 CDs, two laptops and two USB sticks which will be examined by experts. “Police were given information by Interpol who then proceeded in obtaining the search warrant, searching and confiscating any sensitive material,” Paphos police spokesman Nikos Tsiapis said. “This case is not linked to any local investigations,” he confirmed.

EU driving licence fine THOUGH the European Commission has referred Cyprus to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for failing to implement a driving licence directive, it did decide yesterday to reduce the proposed ﬁne by several hundred euro a day. The European Commission referred Cyprus to the ECJ on June 21 for not implementing a directive aiming to facilitate mutual recognition of driving licences within the EU. Cyprus should have passed legislation concerning this in its parliament by January 2011, but did not. But because it has taken some steps towards implementation since June, the commission recommended reducing a possible daily ﬁne from €7,175 to about €6,505. No court date has been set as of yet.

Leaders a no-show at UN-hosted drinks bash A UN-hosted reception at Chateau Status in the buffer zone in Nicosia on Tuesday night fell flat when neither the president nor the Turkish Cypriot leader turned up. Special Advisor of the United Nations Alexander Downer had held separate meetings during the day on Tuesday with President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu. In the evening, a reception was held for diplomatic missions, but neither Christofias nor Eroglu showed up. Their absence led to speculation in the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot press as they sought to explain the absence. Was President Demetris Christofias really too busy to attend? And did the Turkish Cypriots get upset because Turkey’s ‘ambassador’ to the ‘TRNC’ Halil Ibrahim Akca was not invited? Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris said yesterday that the reason Eroglu did not show up and his special representative Osman Ertug left

The UN sent all invites electronically and a diplomatic source told the Cyprus Mail there had been some problems with invitations not coming through, although this could not be confirmed by the UN.

media. Zavrantonas and Hadjigeorgiou had friendly relations and would ask Antoniou to bring them marijuana and cocaine, the court heard. Antoniou claimed that he had a conversation with the duo when they “were doing coke and chatting over this and that” when Hadjigeorgiou said he got €100,000 off the police. As a protected witness, Hadjigeorgiou may be given a new identity and funds to go abroad once the trial is over. During the same conversation, Hadjigeorgiou allegedly said “that he got the job done himself”, an allusion to Hadjicostis’ murder that created the expectation that, as a prosecution witness, he would get money to relocate. Zavrantonas – already serving his sentence for attempting to kill Gregoriou – said he would get €30,000 and go to Bulgaria. Gregoriou was injured in late 2009 when a bomb went off in his car and spent time in hospital. Antoniou told the court yesterday that Zavrantonas had allegedly asked him to

place a bomb in a car but he refused. “I told him if a man is going to be killed then I’m not doing this, why don’t you do it?” He said he did not know for whom the bomb was intended. But Antoniou said that he was convinced that Zavrantonas and Hadjigeorgiou had robbed an OPAP betting shop, and had complained to Zavrantonas because he had excluded him. On the night of the robbery, the witnesses had sneaked out of custody with Antoniou, the court heard. On the outskirts of Nicosia, Hadjigeorgiou showed Antoniou a black plastic bin bag with a gun, he said. Antoniou said that he had eventually realised that it was Zavrantonas who allegedly handed him over to police, after Zavrantonas tried and failed to get him to place bombs on various occasions. Facing premeditated murder charges are former television presenter Elena Skordelli and her brother Tasos Krasopoulis who are alleged masterminds; alleged shooter Gregoris Xenofontos; and Andreas Gregoriou, the alleged ﬁxer.

Economic crisis has deepened bigotry Population challenge: one-fifth of population is now non-Cypriot By George Psyllides CYPRUS is facing big challenges on immigration issues as the economic crisis has exacerbated xenophobia on the island, Ombudswoman Eliza Savvidou said yesterday. “Despite immigration beneﬁtting the country’s economy – since we exploited migrants mainly as cheap labour – and despite it enriching our culture with new, creative elements, traditional Cypriot society has developed a defensive and xenophobic approach towards migrants,” Eliza Savvidou told a workshop on the right of migrants in Cyprus to equal treatment in the workplace, education, health and public services. Cyprus is currently host to some 180,000 non-Cypriots who make up one-ﬁfth of the Republic’s population. Around 67,000 are thirdcountry nationals and 12 per cent of the pupils in public schools are children from migrant families. The ombudswoman said the economic crisis plaguing the island has made the situation worse for migrants. “It unfortunately provides fertile ground for the cultivation and display of xenophobic perceptions and behaviours, even violence,” Savvidou said.

“With xenophobic public discourse and the cultivation of myths, the migrant, the ‘foreigner,’ is turned into a scapegoat for all the problems we face.” Interior Minister Eleni Mavrou said the inclusion of migrants was high on the list of priorities of the Cypriot EU presidency. “We should not forget that uncertainty and unequal treatment lead to insecurity and possible disregard of the rules, which result in the socioeconomic marginalisation of migrants and their families,” Mavrou said. The minister said the difﬁcult economic conditions experienced by most European countries increase the risk of marginalisation. Employers urge construction workers to call off strike EMPLOYERS’ and contractors’ federations have asked construction workers not to go ahead with an island-wide strike announced for today and tomorrow. The construction industry “has shrunk to an unprecedented extent over the last three years. Many businesses have either suspended activities or else are on the tipping point and struggle every day to survive,” the Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEV) said in an announcement yesterday. Unions SEK and PEO have said that construction workers are being taken advantage of because of the debt crisis. But OEV said that everyone – workers, employers and the economy – was hurting and a strike would only make things worse. “Unions’ complaints and problems…cannot be resolved by conﬂict. Only through dialogue will mutually accepted solutions be found to restore hope for recovery,” OEV’s announcement said. Just a day earlier on Tuesday, SEK’s Yiannakis Ioannou said that it looked like “employers are taking advantage of the situation on the island to pre-empt troika”. Employers want to stop paying the provident fund, abolish bonuses and overtime, increase work hours from 38 to 40 a week, as well as cut down wages by up to 30 per cent, Ioannou said. Paphos mayor seeks to woo Chinese funds Town hopes to expand sale of property and increase tourism and investment By Bejay Browne WAYS of strengthening the growing ties between Paphos and China and possible problems encountered by the town’s burgeoning number of Chinese investors were the focus of a meeting held at Paphos town hall this week. The meeting between Chinese ambassador Liu Xinsheng, mayor of Paphos, Savvas Vergas, and municipal ofﬁcer of external relations and tourism, Yiannis Anthis came as Paphos in particular is actively trying to rejuvenate its ailing housing sector by attracting Chinese investors.

According to the ambassador, 600 houses have been sold to Chinese buyers so far and the Chinese have invested 200 million euros in property in Cyprus. “We discussed relations between China and Cyprus and how to develop a tourist and business relationship,” Anthis said. It was the ambassador’s ﬁrst ofﬁcial visit to Paphos since being appointed in the summer, but according to Anthis he has made several private visits to meet with the growing Chinese community. Potential problems for this group also featured during the discussion with Anthis assuring the ambassador

that none had yet surfaced as far as the municipality was aware. “In general terms we did mention that there are both good and bad Cypriot businessmen just as there are good and bad Chinese investors. We didn’t get into speciﬁcs but we agreed to share mutual information in the future. No details were discussed,” Anthis said. “We spoke of co-operation on several levels,” he added. Estate agents have been promoting the sale of Paphos properties, hosting property exhibitions in China while property promotion billboards in Chinese characters have become a common sight around town.

The main points are, locking up before leaving your house, even if you are going to be away for a short period, keeping your shutters and curtains closed and never giving your house keys to cleaners or other people. Other points include never leaving keys in a hiding place, or leaving them in the car when you take it to be washed or to the mechanics. The flyers also highlight the importance of not letting anyone know of any valuables you keep at

THE Roman Catholic chaplain for one of Italy’s biggest prisons has been arrested on charges of demanding sexual favours from inmates in exchange for cigarettes and basic necessities such as soap, shampoo and hair brushes. Father Alberto Barin, 51, was arrested late on Tuesday. Police said he had forced at least six male inmates, all of them non-Italians jailed for minor crimes, to have sex with him in his office or elsewhere in the San Vittore prison, in Milan. A magistrate’s arrest warrant said Barin used his power and influence within the prison to “almost obsessively satisfy his sexual urges”. When Barin managed to help get a prisoner released early, he would ask the inmate to come to his office before leaving to re-pay the favour by having sex, police said. The investigation began after an inmate told prison authorities, who then set up hidden video cameras in his office and elsewhere in the prison. The Roman Catholic Church around the world has been hit by various sex accusations. The most serious ones involve sexual abuse of minors by priests and attempts to cover up the scandals by moving abusers from parish to parish instead of defrocking them.

Both sides fought right up to 9 p.m (1900 GMT) when hostilities were due to stop, with several explosions shaking Gaza City and rockets hitting the Israeli city of Beersheba. Even after the deadline passed, a dozen rockets from Gaza landed in Israel, all in open areas, a police spokesman said.

UN defends failed efforts to halt the capture of Goma THE United Nations defended its failed effort to prevent rebels from seizing the Congolese city of Goma, saying yesterday its helicopters had fired hundreds of rockets at rebels but were unable to beat them back when their forces sharply increased. Advancing M23 rebels seized the city on Tuesday after soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s army fled. Goma is a regional headquarters of a UN force that is tasked with assisting government troops to protect civilians, but peacekeepers largely looked on once the army fled and the city fell. France called the failure of the peacekeeping force, which has heavy weapons and helicopters, to halt the advance of the lightlyarmed rebels “absurd”, and said its mandate should be reviewed. UN helicopter gunships flew 17 sorties, firing 500 rockets and four missiles in the defence of the town, the United Nations said yesterday in a statement giving its account of the battle. Two South African peacekeepers were injured, it added. About 500 rebels made an initial advance on Nov. 15, of whom about 64 were killed by army forces backed by UN helicopter

gunships, it said. But two days later the rebels returned in far greater numbers, launching a new attack with 3,000 men. “Facing this new offensive ... which had a surprising firepower, Congolese forces were determined in the defence of their positions before pulling back ... despite support from their and our attack helicopters,” the U.N. statement said. The sudden increase in the size and capability of the rebel force is likely to add to accusations that the fighters are receiving backing from abroad. Congo and United Nations experts have accused Rwanda of supporting the rebels, a charge Rwanda rejects. The UN Security Council has expressed “concern at reports indicating that external support continues to be provided to the M23, including through troop reinforcement, tactical advice and the supply of equipment” but did not name Rwanda. The rebellion was launched eight months ago by mutinous troops accusing the government of failing to stick to a 2009 deal with insurgents to end a previous conflict. JAPANESE technology giant Toshiba has unveiled a robot which the company says can withstand high radiation and help in nuclear disasters. However, it remains unclear what exactly the new machine will be capable of doing if and when it gets the go-ahead to enter Japan’s crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. The four-legged robot can climb over debris and venture into radiated areas off-limits to human workers. One signiﬁcant innovation, Toshiba said, is that its wireless network can be controlled in high radiation, automatically seeking better transmission when reception becomes weak. But the machine, which looks like a coolbox on wobbly metal legs, also appears prone to glitches. The robot made a jerky mis-step during a demonstration to reporters, freezing with one leg up in the air. It had to be lifted by several people and rebooted. WHEN Hewlett Packard acquired Autonomy last year for $11.1 billion, some 15 different financial, legal and accounting firms were involved in the transaction - and none raised a flag about what HP said Tuesday was a major accounting fraud. HP stunned Wall Street with the allegations about its British software unit and took an $8.8 billion writedown, the latest in a string of reversals for the storied company. HP Chief Executive Meg Whitman, who was a director at the company at the time of the deal, said the board had relied on accounting firm Deloitte for vetting Autonomy’s financials and that KPMG was subsequently hired to audit Deloitte. HP had many other advisers as well: boutique investment bank Perella Weinberg Partners to serve as its lead adviser, along with Barclays. Banking advisers on both sides of the deal were paid $68.8 million, according to data from Thomson Reuters/Freeman Consulting. Barclays pocketed the biggest banker fee of the transaction at $18.1 million and Perella was paid $12 million. On Autonomy’s side of the table were Frank Quattrone’s Qatalyst Partners, which specialises in tech deals and which picked up $11.6 million. UBS, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America were also advising Autonomy and were paid $5.4 million each. Slaughter & May and Morgan Lewis served as the company’s legal advisers. While regulators in the US and the UK, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are likely to spend many months if not years probing what happened, legal experts said on Tuesday it wasn’t clear if any of the advisers would ultimately be held liable.

Eurozone finance ministers, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank were unable to agree in 12 hours of overnight talks in Brussels on how to make the country’s debt sustainable. They want a solution before paying the next loan tranche which is urgently needed to keep Greece afloat. Several European officials played down the delay, saying the disagreements were technical and a deal would be reached when they meet again on November 26. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said he was confident the funding gap could be filled by a mixture of letting Greece buy back its own debt at a discount, tapping ECB profits on Greek bond purchases, and lowering interest rates on government loans to Athens, but not below the cost to lenders. “Additional measures are needed and we have spoken about this intensively with the International Monetary Fund. We agree essentially that the gap can and will be filled, that a buyback programme of Greek debt on the

Both options would make it easier for Greece to meet the targets in the bailout programme. Merkel told the lawmakers the gap could be plugged by lowering interest rates on loans to Greece, extending their maturity to 30 years from 15, and increasing guarantees provided to the eurozone’s temporary EFSF bailout fund, in which Germany would take its share, a participant said. “I believe there are chances,

one doesn’t know for sure, but there are chances to get a solution on Monday,” she told the Bundestag lower house of parliament during a debate. Greece needs the next 31-billion-euro aid tranche to keep servicing its debt and avoid bankruptcy. Its next major repayment is in mid-December. Britain’s government has made reducing a budget deﬁcit that peaked at more than 11 per cent of national income its top political priority since it came to power in May 2010, but slow economic growth has made this a major challenge. US jobless claims drop, manufacturing shows stronger growth THE number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits fell last week but remained elevated due to superstorm Sandy, a sign the storm is proving to be a substantial disruption to the labour market. Other data yesterday showed stronger growth in US manufacturing in November. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped

41,000 to a seasonally adjusted 410,000, the Labour Department said. That was smack in line with the median forecast in a Reuters poll. The storm has distorted a range of economic indicators, making it harder to gauge the underlying health of the US economy. Economists thought yesterday’s readings nevertheless point to a struggling jobs market.

“There appears to be a noticeable deceleration of growth in the fourth quarter,” said Peter Hooper, an economist at Deutsche Bank in New York. “It would not be surprising if some of the new jobless claims are due to underlying weakness in the labour market,” he said. US ﬁnancial markets showed little reaction to the jobless data as investors focused on

developments in Europe and trading slowed ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday today. US stock futures were up slightly, while Treasury debt prices were ﬂat. An analyst from the Labour Department said several states were still reporting an increase in claims due to Sandy, a mammoth storm that slammed into the East Coast on October 29.

Lashings of hypocrisy in AKEL’s demand for transparency THE COMMUNISTS of AKEL never miss an opportunity to advertise their alleged moral superiority and supposedly ethical, political behaviour. They claim they are always guided by noble motives, in contrast to the members of all other parties, putting the best interests of the people and society above everything else. It is all part of the AKEL myth the party has successfully promoted over the years. The fuss AKEL is currently making about publicising the capital statements of the presidential candidates is a case in point. For several days now its spokesmen have been asking why Nicos Anastasiades and Giorgos Lillikas have not released a statement with their assets and liabilities, implying the candidates were hiding something. The AKEL candidate Stavros Malas had done this several weeks ago, allowing his backers to take the moral high ground and take shots at his rivals for their ‘refusal’ to follow suit. Anastasiades had said he would release a capital statement when he officially submitted his candidacy, but this was not deemed acceptable by AKEL spokesman Giorgos Loucaides who held a news conference on Wednesday to accuse Anastasiades of “subterfuge and hypocrisy” and to ask why he needed another two months to submit the statement. What gave AKEL the right to dictate the time when the statement had to be released, Loucaides did not say. It was rather rich of AKEL to accuse any rival of hypocrisy. This is the party which managed to have debts of €10 million, owed by party-controlled companies to the Bank of Cyprus, written off. It is the same party which boasted a couple of years ago that it had a surplus of €4 million and last month bailed out cash-strapped football club Omonia with a hand-out of €350,000. In a country in which parties never make ends meet it would be interesting to know how AKEL has such cash surpluses that it can afford to make donations to football clubs. Of course, when it comes to party funding and finances, AKEL, like the other parties, opposes transparency and the release of information for public scrutiny. Does this not smack of hypocrisy and double standards? Why should presidential candidates be obliged to make their assets public and not political parties? And did Demetris Christofias release a capital statement before the last presidential elections? If he did not, it might be an idea for AKEL, which is so committed to transparency, to demand that the outgoing president and ministers also released a capital statement when they left office. We are not saying anyone did anything illegal, but transparency and the moral obligation to make public a capital statement must apply to everyone in top public posts.

HE WISEST words on the Second Gaza War may have come from an Israeli living in a kibbutz near the Gaza border. “If you want to defend me… Don’t send the Israel Defence Forces for us in order to ‘win’,” Michal Vasser wrote in Haaretz on November 15. “Start thinking about the long term and not just about the next election. Try to negotiate until white smoke comes up through the chimney. Hold out a hand to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Stop with the ‘pinpoint assassinations’ and look into the civilians’ eyes on the other side as well.” Israel is, of course, entitled to defend itself from rocket attacks. But the lesson of the last two decades is that attacks stop, and intifadas do not start, when there is a prospect of peace - and that, when there is no such prospect, Palestinian militancy is uncontainable. The chances of a comprehensive and sustainable two-state settlement now being negotiated with Mahmoud Abbas’ West Bank-based Palestinian Authority (PA) - and of its acceptance, albeit grudgingly, by Gaza’s Hamas after a popular vote - may be slim. But the only alternative is an endlessly recurring cycle of deadly violence between Israelis and Palestinians. The immediate priority is to calm and stabilise the situation in Gaza. But if there are not to be more and even worse eruptions, Israeli policymakers need to ask themselves some fundamental questions. So, too, must their rusted-on supporters in the United States and countries like mine. How is peace fostered if the elimination or dramatic diminution of Hamas’ capability leaves Gaza in the hands of even more militant groups, and gives Islamists throughout the region another recruitment tool? How is Israel’s national security served when, by its action in Gaza and inaction with Abbas, it jeopardises its longstanding and hard-won peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan

An explosion from an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City yesterday (both now looking very fragile indeed in the aftermath of the Arab Spring)? How can Israel’s preferred Palestinian leaders, Abbas and PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, be left with any credible capacity to negotiate if talks cannot begin until, as Israel insists, they retreat on their minimum condition of a settlement freeze in the Occupied Territories? For all that Israel downplays its signiﬁcance, the Arab Peace Initiative of 2002 still offers a critically important deal: full normalisation of relations by the entire Arab world in exchange for a comprehensive peace settlement. How long can this Arab League position be sustained with peace talks going nowhere?

Another big question for Israel is whether it can accept the consequences if a two-state solution disappears completely from the agenda. Israel, as founding father David Ben Gurion warned, can be a Jewish state, it can be a democratic state, and it can be a state occupying the whole of historical Israel; but it cannot be all three. According to the CIA World Factbook, Jews currently outnumber non-Jews, by 6.4 million to 5.6 million, in the total area of historical Palestine. But, with a much lower birthrate and declining immigration, it is only a matter of time before Jews are in a minority. With Gaza still smoldering, yet another burning question is

waiting in the wings. What are Israel and its supporters supposed to gain by bitterly resisting the United Nations General Assembly resolution recognising Palestine as a non-member “observer state” (with a status like the Vatican), which now seems bound to be introduced, and passed by a huge international majority, on or around November 29? The text of the draft resolution now in circulation contains no offensive language. It makes clear both that full UN membership remains to be determined and that final-status issues like borders, refugees, Jerusalem, and security all remain to be negotiated. True, passage of this resolution might give Palestine some standing that it now lacks to seek prosecutions in the International Criminal Court for alleged violations of international law. But the ICC is not a kangaroo court, and allegations without substance can be expected to be treated accordingly. Palestinian statehood has always been an indispensable requirement of Israel’s own longterm peace and security, and it is overwhelmingly in Israel’s interest to defuse rather than further inflame the issue. This need has become more urgent than ever in view of the new realities of power in the region. In short, Israel should treat the UN vote not as an excuse for renewed confrontation, but as an opportunity for a fresh start to serious negotiations. The US reaction is key: Rather than punishing the PA, and maybe the UN as well, it should use the resolution to propose the kind of diplomatic circuitbreaker for which the world has long been hoping. Of course, to put on the table a comprehensive settlement plan that addresses all of the final-status issues, with compromises that all sides could be persuaded and pressured to accept, would require statesmanship. Unhappily, that quality has been agonisingly absent from Middle East diplomacy for almost as long as anyone can remember. On The Scene Theatre Misery is alive on stage The stage adaptation of one of Stephen King’s most memorable psychological thrillers, Misery, will be presented to theatregoers by the Satiriko Theatro from tomorrow till December 29 for 12 performances. Misery is a dark and twisted tale which enthrals the audience from the very beginning to its climactic and unexpected end. Originally a short story writer, King’s first novel Carrie went on to become an award-winning movie. Since then, he has captured the imagination of fans around the world with his chilling stories - over thirty turned into feature length films, in which clowns are never good, pets are seemingly possessed and women a tad unpredictable and unstable. And the latter is true of his female lead Annie Wilkes, Misery’s main character. For those who missed the movie (and the book), Misery tells the story of bestselling author Paul Sheldon. When driving through the mountains after finishing his latest work, his car leaves the road and he is seriously injured. Hampered by his physical incapacitation and the inclem-

inspired by an album of photographs that was made available to each author through Fluster Magazine’s online Flickr Group. The stories in this collection show a remarkable range of styles and themes. We have tramps quoting Keats, conversations with the dead and moving memories from the past. We enter strange worlds, wild imaginations and the obscure Art world. So, as you head for the gallery tomorrow evening, be ready for a fantastic concoction of stories by Moustaka and Cuvi. In 1990, King’s novel was adapted for the screen, starring James Caan as Sheldon and Kathy Bates in an Oscar-winning performance as Wilkes. This Greek-language adaptation is directed by Christos Zanos and features Popi Avraam and Nikos Nikolaidis in the roles of Wilkes and Sheldon respectively. It’s the perfect King book to adapt for the stage, as the author keeps his focus on the two characters. It’s impotant to note that Satiriko will run two shows a week: on Friday and Saturday, with Saturday’s show starting at the unusually (but perhaps appropriately) late time of 11pm. Thrilling and moving, intense and emotional and featuring strong language and violent scenes, this production of Misery holds nothing back, taking the audience into the darker sides of fandom.

Pop along to your local cinema and you can choose to watch the latest instalment of James Bond, animation sequels or rom-coms to entertain you until the wee hours. But for all those film gems that fall between the cracks of traditional categories, head straight to the Pantheon International Xperimental Film & Animation Festival. Besides your average blockbuster there are many other films out there that enrich the audiovisual landscape and spark the imagination. Celebrating its 10th year of opening, the upcoming Xperimental festival is a showcase of all things weird and wonderful in cinema. More specifically, the festival screens experimental and short films, as well as animation, the main aim according to the organisers is to bring the artists and the public closer to the work which mirrors modern circumstances, troubled thoughts and personal views of their creators. These cinematic experiments in light, sound and image have the potential to produce wondrous and explosive results which can help expand our understanding of cinema. It’s important to note that the participants of the Xperimental festival have each developed their own unique style of film producing challenging popular and conventional modes of the moving image from difficult and hand-made films to extraordinarily radical and obscure compositions removing boundaries and limits within art.

Opening tomorrow night and running for one day only, Crowds will have the chance to view 22 films with the festivities being held on the second floor of the Pantheon Building in the Gallery and on the third floor Tritos. Approximately 100 artists ranging from 15 countries approached the festival organisers for participation, with each film selected on a basis of level of the creativity, authenticity and experimentation. This collection spans the recent, the kooky, the low-budget and the risky, with an incorporation of video art, and plenty of random imagery. The many artists chosen to partake in the event include: Huang Ya-Li (Taiwan) Mordholt & Steingrosse (Germany), Eva Olsson (Sweden) Theo Putzu (Spain) Jean-Gabriel Periot (France) and Antonis Antoniou (a local regular) to name just a few. Aside from screenings, during the projections and at break times, Tritos on the third floor will open its doors, with live DJ sets, where people will be able to roam around the space and mingle with the crowds.

The pictures show a typical “day in the life” for William in his work ﬂying RAF Sea King helicopters from their base at RAF Valley on Anglesey, north Wales. From planning and preparing for any emergency callout to resting with his colleagues during “downtime”, the ex-

clusive pictures give an insight into the life of Flight Lieutenant Wales in his day job as a search and rescue (SAR) pilot. William may be a royal, but he works the same 24-hour shifts as the rest of his fourman crew. Each morning starts with a brieﬁng from the off-going duty crew, including an engineering brief, an update on speciﬁc air and ground activities in the area, and local and national weather forecasts.

The Search and Rescue Force attend an average of 1,950 callouts each year - RAF Valley typically responds to a high number, as it covers north Wales, popular for walking and climbing. One picture released shows Flt Lt Wales checking his aircraft – a Sea King Mark 3. He is one of two pilots in the crew, which also includes a winchman and a radar/winch operator. The Sea King can carry a maximum of 17 passengers and can ﬂy for up to six hours with a range of 250 nautical miles.

Crew members are responsible for checking their own kit and William’s tasks include checking the airframe, fuel, hydraulic and navigation systems. The pictures also show the crew relaxing together during their downtime, from sharing a meal or resting in the crew-room. Computer games - especially those that are militarythemed such as Call of Duty are said to be a favourite, but the crew can never be more than 60 seconds away from their aircraft. Towards the end of their shift, they have to prepare a comprehensive brief for the next day’s crew then brief them on what lies ahead, before hanging up their ﬂying kit and heading home. Once they have clocked off, they remain on “2nd standby” for the majority of the next day, in case they are needed to support more complex search and rescue operations. Source Code (Novacinema3, 21.00) We open on a train where our hero (Jake Gyllenhaal) sits opposite Christina (Michelle Monaghan), though he doesn’t know her name is Christina and in fact has no idea where he is. “I took your advice. It was good advice, thank you,” she says mysteriously. She seems to think he’s someone else - and in fact, when he looks in the mirror he really is someone else, with another man’s face (a man named Sean) staring back at him. “Everything’s going to be OK,” says Christina, just before an explosion suddenly rips through the train, killing everyone on board. You may wonder what the hell’s going on - and the answer lies in “source code”,

a high-tech military project linking Jake to the final memories of Sean (whoever he was); that explosion really happened, and everyone is dead - but our hero can inhabit Sean’s last eight minutes before he died, again and again like in Groundhog Day, his mission being to find whoever planted the bomb. Kevin (played as a teenager by Ezra Miller) is something of a demon child, constantly sneering and glaring and doing bad things - and Eva, his mum (played by Tilda Swinton), basically hates him, though she also feels secretly guilty because she knows she and he are alike. Kevin is cold, like his mum; it’s as though her frigid, controlling side has been made human - and, for instance, her face morphs into his at one point, and they both arrange egg-shells on their plate in exactly the same way. By Chris Michaud SHE won Oscar gold for her uncanny performance as the Queen, but Helen Mirren’s latest portrayal finds her as the power behind the throne - or, more precisely, the director’s chair. In Hitchcock, Mirren stars opposite Anthony Hopkins as legendary director Alfred Hitchcock’s devoted wife Alma Reville, and early buzz has her a contender for another Oscar nomination. The film, which opens in limited release tomorrow, explores the domestic life of one of Hollywood’s most iconic and revered directors, set during the days of his struggle to put the ground-breaking 1960 classic, Psycho on the silver screen. Toggling back and forth between his on-set battles with censors and his cast including Janet Leigh (Scarlett Johansson), Vera Miles (Jessica Biel) and Tony Perkins (James D’Arcy), and his strained relationship with Alma as she copes with his well-documented obsession with his ravishing leading ladies, Hitchcock treats film fans to a glimpse of bygone Hollywood. But it paints a more nuanced and sympathetic portrait of the director Hopkins

Having won her Oscar as one of the world’s most famous women, Mirren said she finds herself drawn to “the ones I don’t know anything about,

like Alma. Those are the most fun.” With little to go on, Mirren said she turned to the 2003 book Alma Hitchcock: The Woman Behind the Man, by the couple’s daughter Patricia, who also acted in several Hitchcock films. “I’m not that much of a film buff that I knew about Alma, and I had no idea about Hitchcock’s private life,” she said, adding the book aimed “to bring her mother out of the shadows.” By all accounts making the movie about the movies was a joy, with Mirren and Hopkins co-starring in their first film together under first-time director Sacha Gervasi, who fixed a script that had made

the rounds. Hopkins described it as the “most fun” since his Oscarwinning role in the thriller Silence of the Lambs. Mirren recalled rushing off to work each day: “I couldn’t wait.” And it helped that the actors have the same approach. “There’s no mystery to it ... They talk about chemistry, and Helen agrees with me, there’s no such thing. You know your part, she knows hers, and off you go, hope it works,” Hopkins said. But Mirren and Hopkins, who is also being touted for an Oscar nomination, parted ways when speculating on how the auteur director, who never won an Oscar during

ﬁve decades of work, would have fared in the Hollywood of today. “He would have despaired,” Hopkins said. “It would have been anathema to him. That kind of artistry is gone.” Corporate control means “you have eight or nine producers on the set, everyone’s got a say in the scripts, and even craft services!” But Mirren differed, imagining “he’d do brilliantly well.” “He was a great salesman, and the Hollywood of today is so much about being a salesman and being able to sell yourself as a brand,” she explained. “He did that brilliantly. I think the two of them sold Hitch. Hitch was the faceman, he was the brand.”

THE estate of The Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien and publisher Harper Collins have filed an $80 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. studios over the licensing of characters and plots in online and gambling games derived from the films. The lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles this week, alleges that Warner Bros. and its subsidiary New Line Cinema - which own the merchandising rights to the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit brands - infringed on copyrights by licensing to casino slot machines, online gambling, games and downloads. Tolkien’s estate accuses Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., of “infringing conduct.” “Not only does the production of gambling games patently exceed the scope of defendants’ rights, but this infringing conduct has outraged Tolkien’s devoted fan base, causing irreparable harm to Tolkien’s legacy and reputation and the valuable goodwill generated by his works,” the lawsuit stated. The suit claimed Warner Bros. earned millions of dollars from legal merchandise licensing revenue related to The Lord of the Rings trilogy of films, which have grossed nearly $3 billion at the global box office. The estate of the late English author and Harper Collins, a division of News Corp., are asking for at least $80 million in damages. Representatives for Warner Bros., Tolkien’s estate and Harper Collins were not immediately available for comment. The lawsuit comes a week ahead of the New Zealand premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of a new trilogy of films returning to Tolkien’s world of elves, goblins and wizards of Middle Earth, based on the Lord of the Rings prequel novel The Hobbit.

The U.S. PGA champion’s switch to Nike clubs next season, a deal that media reports estimate will be worth $250 million over 10 years, has been the subject of much debate with six-time major winner Nick Faldo among those questioning his decision. Asked by reporters in Dubai this week if he had any concerns the change would jeopardise his conﬁdence or form, McIlroy replied: “No, not at all. “I think all the manufacturers make great equipment nowadays and it’s all very similar - a lot of them get their clubs made at the same factories. I don’t think it will make any difference.” Twice major winner McIlroy will bid a fond farewell to his old clubs at the $8 million DP World Tour Championship that starts today, the end-ofseason showpiece event on

the European Tour. “I’ve started the process of trying a few new things,” said the 23-year-old Northern Irishman. “I’m still playing with my Titleist clubs - this is the last week - but I’ve tinkered about a little bit with the new ones, enough to feel comfortable going into next season.” McIlroy is delighted with the progress he has made this season and European Tour chief executive George O’Grady presented him with a special money clip on Tuesday. “I thought we would take this moment to acknowledge the extraordinary performance of Rory this year, winning our Race To Dubai money-list before coming to the ﬁnal championship, and winning the money-list in America too,” said O’Grady. “He played brilliantly all year and conducted himself in a manner where anybody would be proud to say, ‘He’s our champion’.” McIlroy said he felt “proud and honoured” to join the long list of greats to have won the European money-list. “I’ve had four goes at it and it was great to be able to do it

this year,” he added. “It’s been a phenomenal year but I’ve still got one tournament left and I want to ﬁnish the season strong by picking up two trophies at the end of the week.” McIlroy agreed with many of his fellow players when he said the importance of the DP World Tour Championship had been diluted after he clinched the money-list title nine days ago. McIlroy was undoubtedly inﬂuenced by the fact he missed out on overall victory in the FedExCup despite having won two of the four tournaments in this year’s U.S. playoff series. RAFA Nadal returned to the practice court and started hitting balls again this week for the ﬁrst time since the latest in a series of knee injuries forced his withdrawal from the U.S. Open at the end of August. The 11-time grand slam singles champion, who has not competed since a shock defeat to Czech Lukas Rosol in the second round at Wimbledon in June, completed a session under the supervision of coach and uncle Toni Nadal on an indoor hard court in his home town of Manacor on the island of Majorca. The 26-year-old Spaniard, the current world number four, hopes to be back to full ﬁtness in time for the Australian Open in January. “I think I am feeling better, the knee is improving the right way and I am happy to be on court another time after a few months outside,” Nadal told reporters. “I am just enjoying the feeling to be playing tennis an-

other time and, well, it will be another period of my recovery,” he added. “I start very slow and I go day by day. I will work hard in my comeback and hopefully the knee will be ready soon. “Always you have to be careful. A few months outside of competition the body has to re-adapt everything on court and all the muscles need to start very slow.” Nadal’s athletic, aggressive playing style places huge demands on his muscles and joints and he has been sidelined several times by knee problems during his 11-year career. SIR Alex Ferguson has vowed to continue with his European experimentation policy next month even though it cost Manchester United their 100 per cent Champions League record in Turkey on Tuesday night. With qualiﬁcation for the last 16 as group winners already assured, Ferguson left most of his senior players at home for the game with Galatasaray. As a consequence, Burak Yilmaz’s second-half header earned the hosts a 1-0 win that means Galatasaray only have to match CFR Cluj’s result at Old Trafford to accompany the Red Devils into the last 16. However, Ferguson quickly dashed any suggestion Cluj may end up facing a substantially stronger team. “We’ll play a similar team against Cluj, that goes without saying,” said Ferguson.

“We’ve qualified and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t use the squad.” In fact, despite the result, and yet another goal conceded from a set-piece, Ferguson declared himself reasonably satisfied with the outcome. Eighteen year-old Nick Powell grew into the game on his first United start, coming closest for the visitors with a first-half header that struck the crossbar. And Phil Jones came through his first full game of the season after struggling with back and knee complaints. “We worried about setpieces and that was the area we suffered,” said Ferguson. “That was always going to be a problem considering the lack of experience and height. “But otherwise it was a decent performance. Parts of the game were good and we handled the atmosphere.” Ferguson was critical of

At least though the damage was not as serious as 19 years ago when United were sent crashing out of the competition. The stadium is different as well, even if the incredible noise levels seem to be the same. “It is a fantastic stadium and obviously an improvement from the old one,” said Ferguson. “There is not much difference in the atmosphere. “The biggest change since then is that we have won the competition twice and we have qualiﬁed for the last 16 this year too.”

BAYERN Munich advanced to the Champions League knockout stage after their 1-1 draw in Valencia on Tuesday but the Bundesliga leaders will have to wake up and rediscover top form if they are to banish the memories of last season’s collapse. Bayern played for almost an hour with an extra man after Valencia’s Antonio Barragan was sent off in the 33rd minute but trailed 1-0 until Thomas Mueller’s 82nd minute equaliser. The draw was enough to secure a spot in the next round for both teams after BATE Borisov slumped to a 2-0 home defeat to France’s Lille, but Bayern CEO KarlHeinz Rummenigge sought more from the Bavarians. “We have to wake up,” he told players and guests at a post-game banquet in the early hours of yesterday. “We have to rediscover the form that made us so strong this season and that gave us a big, big lead in the Bundesliga.” Bayern, eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with 10 wins from 12 matches, were held to a surprise 1-1 draw by lowly Nuremberg on Saturday. They could have grabbed all three points against the battling Spaniards but for a string of squandered chances, while the woodwork denied Mario Mandzukic a goal late in the game. “This was not a game for which we should celebrate,” Mueller told reporters. “We had an extra player for 60 minutes but were trailing by a goal until the 82nd. It was frustrating not to have won this game. At the end it was just damage control.” Bayern have every reason to sound the alarm bells ahead of a busy week with three league games on the menu. Announcing that Benitez was an “interim” rather than permanent appointment, Chelsea said in a statement: “Chelsea Football Club can conﬁrm Rafael Benitez has been appointed interim ﬁrst-team manager until the end

ANCHESTER City went down fighting as their Champions League hopes ended with a battling draw against ten-man Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium. Manager Roberto Mancini was again left to rue a costly decision to deploy a threeman defence as the Spanish giants tore into the hosts in the early stages. Karim Benzema struck and Real should have had more in a devastating spell but City grew in confidence after switching formations and Sergio Aguero levelled from the spot after Alvaro Arbeloa was sent off. City poured forward in search of a winner in the closing stages but it was not to be and the result leaves them with just three points in Group D and unable to progress. Mancini reverted to the controversial 3-5-2 system which proved so troublesome as City slumped to a damaging defeat at Ajax earlier in the competition. ARSENAL secured qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 2-0 home win over Montpellier. Second-half goals for Jack Wilshere - his first in almost two years - and Lukas Podolski made sure of at least second place in Group B after leaders Schalke beat Olympiacos. The Gunners must now win in Athens in a fortnight to stand any chance of finishing top and so head into the last 16 as one of the seeds. Despite coach Rene Girard accepting their European hopes were all but over in his pre-match press conference, it was a positive start by the French visitors - who were caught up in north London traffic and arrived only an hour ahead of kick off. Arsenal took the lead four minutes into the second half. Captain Thomas Vermaelen floated a deep ball into the penalty area, which was knocked down by former Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud into the path of Wilshere, who lifted the ball over the keeper for his first goal since November 2010. It was 2-0 on 63 minutes. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain carried the ball down the right, before feeding Giroud on the edge of the penalty area. The Frenchman exchanged a neat one-two with Podolski, who ran on to fire a sublime left-foot volley over Geoffrey Jourdren.
