Fireworks and fury as truth is revealed Stormy meeting with parties as Christofias lashes out at minister and CB governor By George Psyllides
P
RESIDENT Demetris Christofias’ meeting with party leaders over the troika negotiations yesterday was tense and filled with recriminations. It became particularly hostile when the political leadership heard the bailout amount, which is around €17 billion – €10 billion for the banks, €6 billion for maturing state debt, and €1.5 billion for public finances – reports said. At this point Christofias reacted, reports said, slamming his hand on the table and asking how the amount became so high. Reports also claimed that the president twice said that he would not sign a bailout deal that was not manageable. At some stage he was openly critical of Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly and Central Bank governor Panicos Demetriades whom he likened to his predecessor Athanasios Orphanides who had irked Christofias repeatedly by urging him to shore up public finances. He also appeared angry at members of the negotiating team. Christofias reportedly admitted he did not have an alternative plan in the event that an agreement with international lenders was not achieved. But he said he had money for December. The leaders were told of
the risks to the banking sector’s liquidity if there was no agreement. Speaking after the meeting, main opposition DISY leader Nicos Anastasiades said his main concern was the troika leaving the island without a prospect of them returning and the effects on the banking sector and the state’s ability to meet its obligations. He said he handed the president a letter asking, among others, “what the plan is to tackle the possibility of a deadlock in light of the dangers ahead of us.” Anastasiades said he expected the government to inform him of what they were planning to do to cover their obligations towards civil servants but “more importantly how to meet the banks’ potential needs in the event there is a deadlock”. “Everyone must assume their responsibilities and we are not the ones governing,” the DISY chief said. “It is the government that must take the decisions and submit the proposals on how it tackles a dead end. We are ready to provide support.” DIKO leader Marios Garoyian said Cyprus was playing with fire. “It is not the time to hide; it is the time to tell the truth and face it,” Garoyian said. The DIKO leader suggested that the government had no plan in the event the bailout talks fell through. “It is time to have a specific plan, a specific framework of

Swedish woman charged for having sex with skeleton By Mia Shanley A WOMAN in Sweden has been charged with engaging in sexual activities with a human skeleton and could face jail time for disturbing the peace of the dead, a Swedish prosecutor said. Police found a full human skeleton, skulls and a box containing other human bones by chance after responding to a call saying a shot had been fired from her flat in the city of
Gothenburg. They also discovered CD-ROMs titled “my necrophilia” and “my first experience”, and photographs of the woman engaging in various sexual activities with a skeleton, a court document on the prosecutor’s website showed. It said the woman had handled the bones in a “shameful” and “unethical” manner. “She is interested in the dead,” Prosecutor Kristina Ehrenborg-Staffas told Reuters. “She has pictures of
morgues, churches and graveyards.” The 37-year-old unemployed woman has also been accused of selling human bones to an artist in Uppsala in eastern Sweden this past summer. The woman has said she bought the bones, which were around 50 years old or more from different parts of the world, over the Internet for historical purposes and says that it is not her in the photographs. Her trial will take place next week and she faces a maximum of two years in prison if found guilty.

A NEW hairdressing service on offer for senior citizens at the Nicosia Multifunctional Centre is proving particularly popular, and yesterday received an official seal of approval with a visit by Nicosia mayor, Constantinos Yiorkadjis. Free hair cuts and blow dries are now available at the centre as part of the municipality’s daytime programme to provide care, support and entertainment for senior citizens. “Working with the elderly on a daily basis I marvelled at how many would come in
all prim and proper but then gradually their appearances began to suffer slightly,” said founder of the salon and one of the operators of the senior citizens’ programme, Christina Karamani. “When I asked the ladies why they were no longer able to keep up their appearances they told me that they couldn’t get to their hairdressers anymore or that they simply couldn’t afford it, so I saw the opportunity to offer them these services for free,” she explained. A special hair dressing session was put on yesterday for the mayor who was accompanied by Costas Pistos, the head of Nicosia’s Technical
School which often cooperates with the centre. “The programme has been a success so far and it brings the people working at the salon great satisfaction to see the women with such big smiles on their faces after they’ve had their hair done,” Karamani explained. “It really builds up their self-esteem.” The salon began working on November 1 and has averaged between 15-20 visitors each day. To qualify for a free visit to the salon you must be a pensioner, a member of the Nicosia Centre for the elderly and reside in the Nicosia district. The salon is open to the public too at
very low prices: €5 for a hair cut, €5 for a blow dry, €10 for a hair dye and €20 for highlights. The mayor spoke about the responsibility of Nicosia’s citizens. “For Nicosia council, the response to its citizens’ problems and ensuring social cohesion is a priority even under the difficult financial circumstances they are experiencing,” Yiorkadjis said. The salon in the Multifunctional Centre is open everyday from 7.30am until 2.30pm except for Wednesdays. For more information or to book an appointment, call 22797855/4
Remanded for the fatal stabbing of neighbour Welfare services defend care of mentally ill suspect By Alexandra Anastasiades LIMASSOL criminal court remanded in custody a 22-year-old man with a history of mental illness for eight days yesterday in relation to the fatal stabbing of his neighbour. The suspect’s lawyer did not contest the police’s request for a remand and asked for his client to be examined and kept under psychiatric supervision, as he is suffering from psychiatric problems. Eleftherios Constantinou allegedly stabbed and killed his 23-year-old neighbour, Apostolis Athanasiou, late on Monday night after a row over the way Athanasiou had parked his car. The victim, who had just returned home, had parked his car in the field adjacent to the suspect’s house. Following the argument between the neighbours, Athanasiou proceeded to move his car but the suspect returned to the scene with a military knife with which he allegedly stabbed the victim. The victim was rushed to Limassol
general hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. An autopsy revealed that the victim died of massive bleeding as a result of a stab wound that pierced his chest and heart. Constantinou told the court yesterday that he hadn’t wanted to kill Athanasiou. “I didn’t want to kill him but he stomped on me five or six times and hit me on the head and my right eye,” he said. But the CyBC reported that medical tests revealed no sign of injuries on Constantinou. The court heard how after the first argument, Constantinou had gone towards his home issuing threats. He resurfaced with the military knife and got into another argument in the presence of Athanasiou’s parents. His mother then tried to push way Constantinou asking him to leave. The victim rushed to intervene and was fatally stabbed. The suspect who immediately fled the scene after the stabbing was tracked down on Tuesday around 3pm, sitting
in his car on a dirt road off the PlatresKyperounda road. Police said the suspect had a history of mental illness. In February 2011 he had stabbed and injured a 48-year-old man under “similar circumstances”. After being examined by a psychiatrist, Constantinou was referred to Athalassa Psychiatric ward in Nicosia where he remained for some time. The case was set to go to trial in March 2013, two years after the incident took place. “All steps had been taken by the welfare services as provided by law,” the welfare services told the Cyprus Mail yesterday, when asked what measures were taken by them to protect third parties from the potentially dangerous behaviour of Constantinou. This case bears similarities with a murder that took place in Nicosia in January, when a 25-year-old man, who was also under the care of the welfare services, killed his sister following an argument over a laptop. He was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment in May.

State and troika in final push for common ground Still at odds over privatisations, wage indexation, pensions and gas proceeds By George Psyllides THE government was last night still trying to find some sort of common ground with international lenders on certain issues threatening to bring Cyprus’ bailout talks to a deadlock. The two sides were still at odds over privatisations, wage indexation, pensions and the proceeds from natural gas exploitation. Last night, talks were held at the hotel where the heads of the troika delegation were staying in a bid to resolve the outstanding issues as Nicosia appeared to be running out of time. Despite some signs of optimism, it did not appear that the two sides had managed to bridge all their differences. Until late last night, there had not been any reports regarding the process. Reports said the heads of the troika delegation were scheduled to leave the island today. Other members of the group already departed in the past two days. But reports suggested last night that negotiations would continue remotely if a deal was not achieved last night. This was despite warnings that the economy and the banking sector could suffer further from a delay in announcing an agreement. Fitch ratings yesterday downgraded Cyprus further into junk territory citing the uncertainty over the cost of bank recapitalisation and de-
lays in negotiating a bailout, which has contributed to deteriorating economic conditions. Earlier, there were signs that negotiations had come to an end, as grim-faced party leaders walked out of a meeting with President Demetris Christofias saying the government did not have a contingency plan in case the talks fell through. Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou later said that the troika was not leaving immediately. “We are in negotiations with them. I have said that some very difficult issues we disagree on are under discussion and we will continue this effort,” Stefanou said. The spokesman said that the troika’s departure did not mean efforts would stop. Stefanou said a lot of ground had been covered in the negotiations and convergences had been achieved. The spokesman took a shot at party leaders who put all the responsibility on the government but did not offer any suggestions on how to proceed. Negotiations with the troika kicked-off at the finance ministry early yesterday morning and were not without incident. The state broadcaster reported that Trade and Industry Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis had words with the troika over their demand for natural gas proceeds to be used to repay the country’s debt. Sylikiotis’ outburst almost caused the troika to leave,
Leaders attending a tense meeting at the Presidential Palace the report said. On the thorny issue of privatisations, reports suggested the troika has agreed not to touch the electricity company and the ports authority but it insisted on the telecommunications company, which could fetch a billion euros if sold. It also emerged last night that before last night’s meeting, Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly, Sylikiotis, and Stefanou, met with Attorneygeneral Petros Clerides to discuss the wording of certain provisions that could be included in an agreement.

Fury and fireworks at leaders’ meeting as truth finally emerges (Continued from front page) action and immediate decisions that will signal the end of uncertainty,” he said. Ruling AKEL chief Andros Kyprianou highlighted the gravity of the situation and called on everyone to act responsibly. But Green party leader Ioannou Panayiotou perhaps gave the best summary of yesterday morning’s meeting. “We have noticed a disagreement between the president and his associates,” she said. “I will be blunt: a few months ago the president said ‘I don’t know where Mari is’ (the site of the deadly blast that killed 13 people and incapacitated the island’s biggest power plant). Today he told us ‘I don’t know the amount of the loan we need’.”
New rating is a downgrade further into junk FITCH ratings yesterday downgraded Cyprus further into junk territory citing the uncertainty over the cost of bank recapitalisation and delays in negotiating a bailout, which has contributed in deteriorating economic conditions. The agency said it has cut Cyprus’ rating to ‘BB-’ from ‘BB+’ saying it reflects the materially weaker macroeconomic outlook, “a fiscal budget that has significantly underperformed expectations and the continued high level of uncertainty over the costs associated with bank recapitalisation.” “The delay in negotiating official support has contributed to the deteriorating economic conditions and raised uncertainties about public sector reform and the correction of macroeconomic imbalances,” Fitch said. “Cyprus’ fiscal position has deteriorated significantly during 2012.” In the April Stability Programme, the government’s stated goal was to reduce the fiscal deficit to 2.6 per cent of GDP for this year from 6.3 per cent in 2011. Finance ministry data show that for the nine months to September the fiscal shortfall already exceeded the level for the same period last year, Fitch said. “Fitch expects the deficit to be over 5 per cent for 2012.” And this despite austerity measures, including wage freezes and an increase in VAT by 2 percentage points to 17 per cent, said the agency. The weaker growth outlook will increase the challenge of reducing the fiscal deficit and the public debt ratio, which is set to remain substantially higher than before the recession, Fitch said. It said negotiations with the troika have lasted longer than expected despite recent progress on setting key capital ratios for banks and the system’s supervision, and presidential election.

Home CYPRUS TODAY Raid for child pornography PAPHOS police raided the house of a 73-year-old British man in Peyia on Tuesday night on suspicion of possessing child pornography. After obtaining a search warrant, police searched the man’s house and confiscated 15 CDs, two laptops and two USB sticks which will be examined by experts. “Police were given information by Interpol who then proceeded in obtaining the search warrant, searching and confiscating any sensitive material,” Paphos police spokesman Nikos Tsiapis said. “This case is not linked to any local investigations,” he confirmed.
EU driving licence fine THOUGH the European Commission has referred Cyprus to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for failing to implement a driving licence directive, it did decide yesterday to reduce the proposed fine by several hundred euro a day. The European Commission referred Cyprus to the ECJ on June 21 for not implementing a directive aiming to facilitate mutual recognition of driving licences within the EU. Cyprus should have passed legislation concerning this in its parliament by January 2011, but did not. But because it has taken some steps towards implementation since June, the commission recommended reducing a possible daily fine from €7,175 to about €6,505. No court date has been set as of yet.
Leaders a no-show at UN-hosted drinks bash A UN-hosted reception at Chateau Status in the buffer zone in Nicosia on Tuesday night fell flat when neither the president nor the Turkish Cypriot leader turned up. Special Advisor of the United Nations Alexander Downer had held separate meetings during the day on Tuesday with President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu. In the evening, a reception was held for diplomatic missions, but neither Christofias nor Eroglu showed up. Their absence led to speculation in the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot press as they sought to explain the absence. Was President Demetris Christofias really too busy to attend? And did the Turkish Cypriots get upset because Turkey’s ‘ambassador’ to the ‘TRNC’ Halil Ibrahim Akca was not invited? Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris said yesterday that the reason Eroglu did not show up and his special representative Osman Ertug left
the reception early was because Akca was not invited. But different sources said that Akca would not normally be invited to such events, as he is not a diplomat to a recognised state. Christofias said he was busy with the troika - the EU and IMF - discussing a bailout package for the island. But he did find time to inaugurate a building complex for the community council of Psevdas, a village in the Larnaca district. Greek Cypriot daily Politis said that the UN neglected to clarify whether they had invited other diplomats in addition to those of the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The newspaper also said that the UN neglected to invite some diplomatic missions. The UN sent all invites electronically and a diplomatic source told the Cyprus Mail there had been some problems with invitations not coming through, although this could not be confirmed by the UN.

Hadjicostis trial witnesses roamed free and took drugs Former friend tells court of witnesses’ drug taking and robbery plans By Poly Pantelides A CONVICT who used to be friendly with two prosecution witnesses in protective custody in the murder trial of media boss Andis Hadjicostis yesterday described how before he was convicted, he used to provide the witnesses with drugs and they would slip away from the police guard for nights out. Menelaos Antoniou – serving a 30-month sentence in central prisons over drugs, burglaries and forgery – yesterday stood as a defence witness in Nicosia criminal court. Hadjicostis – CEO of fam-

ily-controlled DIAS media group and Sigma TV – died after being shot twice outside his home in Nicosia on January 12, 2010. In court Antoniou described his relationship to two prosecution witnesses in the murder trial, another convict Giorgos Zavrantonas and Fanos Hadjigeorgiou who confessed to driving the getaway motorbike on the night of Hadjicostis’ murder in exchange for immunity. Zavrantonas is serving a 12-year term at an unspecified location for attempting to kill one of the defendants, Andreas Gregoriou, and for an unrelated conspiracy to murder five people. Both Zavrantonas and Hadjigeorgiou are protected witnesses and are under protective custody, but Antoniou said that many times before his current imprisonment he “sneaked out” with his friend Zavranto-
Fanos Hadjigeorgiou nas, through whom he met Hadjigeorgiou who was in accommodation next to Zavrantonas. Last July, the police confirmed that they had to beef up security for Hadjigeorgiou after two of his ‘escapes’ were reported in local

media. Zavrantonas and Hadjigeorgiou had friendly relations and would ask Antoniou to bring them marijuana and cocaine, the court heard. Antoniou claimed that he had a conversation with the duo when they “were doing coke and chatting over this and that” when Hadjigeorgiou said he got €100,000 off the police. As a protected witness, Hadjigeorgiou may be given a new identity and funds to go abroad once the trial is over. During the same conversation, Hadjigeorgiou allegedly said “that he got the job done himself”, an allusion to Hadjicostis’ murder that created the expectation that, as a prosecution witness, he would get money to relocate. Zavrantonas – already serving his sentence for attempting to kill Gregoriou – said he would get €30,000 and go to Bulgaria. Gregoriou was injured in late 2009 when a bomb went off in his car and spent time in hospital. Antoniou told the court yesterday that Zavrantonas had allegedly asked him to
place a bomb in a car but he refused. “I told him if a man is going to be killed then I’m not doing this, why don’t you do it?” He said he did not know for whom the bomb was intended. But Antoniou said that he was convinced that Zavrantonas and Hadjigeorgiou had robbed an OPAP betting shop, and had complained to Zavrantonas because he had excluded him. On the night of the robbery, the witnesses had sneaked out of custody with Antoniou, the court heard. On the outskirts of Nicosia, Hadjigeorgiou showed Antoniou a black plastic bin bag with a gun, he said. Antoniou said that he had eventually realised that it was Zavrantonas who allegedly handed him over to police, after Zavrantonas tried and failed to get him to place bombs on various occasions. Facing premeditated murder charges are former television presenter Elena Skordelli and her brother Tasos Krasopoulis who are alleged masterminds; alleged shooter Gregoris Xenofontos; and Andreas Gregoriou, the alleged fixer.

Economic crisis has deepened bigotry Population challenge: one-fifth of population is now non-Cypriot By George Psyllides CYPRUS is facing big challenges on immigration issues as the economic crisis has exacerbated xenophobia on the island, Ombudswoman Eliza Savvidou said yesterday. “Despite immigration benefitting the country’s economy – since we exploited migrants mainly as cheap labour – and despite it enriching our culture with new, creative elements, traditional Cypriot society has developed a defensive and xenophobic approach towards migrants,” Eliza Savvidou told a workshop on the right of migrants in Cyprus to equal treatment in the workplace, education, health and public services. Cyprus is currently host to some 180,000 non-Cypriots who make up one-fifth of the Republic’s population. Around 67,000 are thirdcountry nationals and 12 per cent of the pupils in public schools are children from migrant families. The ombudswoman said the economic crisis plaguing the island has made the situation worse for migrants. “It unfortunately provides fertile ground for the cultivation and display of xenophobic perceptions and behaviours, even violence,” Savvidou said.
“With xenophobic public discourse and the cultivation of myths, the migrant, the ‘foreigner,’ is turned into a scapegoat for all the problems we face.” Interior Minister Eleni Mavrou said the inclusion of migrants was high on the list of priorities of the Cypriot EU presidency. “We should not forget that uncertainty and unequal treatment lead to insecurity and possible disregard of the rules, which result in the socioeconomic marginalisation of migrants and their families,” Mavrou said. The minister said the difficult economic conditions experienced by most European countries increase the risk of marginalisation. Mavrou said Cyprus is making every effort to ensure migrant inclusion in all public policies affecting the areas of information, employment, education, health and housing. “Of course, there is often a big distance between theory and action, and I must admit that despite making steps in defining the principles and drafting the action framework, we have a long way to go on all levels of governance, and in society itself, for effective implementation of all these actions,” Mavrou said.
Employers urge construction workers to call off strike EMPLOYERS’ and contractors’ federations have asked construction workers not to go ahead with an island-wide strike announced for today and tomorrow. The construction industry “has shrunk to an unprecedented extent over the last three years. Many businesses have either suspended activities or else are on the tipping point and struggle every day to survive,” the Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEV) said in an announcement yesterday. Unions SEK and PEO have said that construction workers are being taken advantage of because of the debt crisis. But OEV said that everyone – workers, employers and the economy – was hurting and a strike would only make things worse. “Unions’ complaints and problems…cannot be resolved by conflict. Only through dialogue will mutually accepted solutions be found to restore hope for recovery,” OEV’s announcement said. Just a day earlier on Tuesday, SEK’s Yiannakis Ioannou said that it looked like “employers are taking advantage of the situation on the island to pre-empt troika”. Employers want to stop paying the provident fund, abolish bonuses and overtime, increase work hours from 38 to 40 a week, as well as cut down wages by up to 30 per cent, Ioannou said. Unions yesterday said they had not ruled out the possibility of striking indefinitely.

Paphos mayor seeks to woo Chinese funds Town hopes to expand sale of property and increase tourism and investment By Bejay Browne WAYS of strengthening the growing ties between Paphos and China and possible problems encountered by the town’s burgeoning number of Chinese investors were the focus of a meeting held at Paphos town hall this week. The meeting between Chinese ambassador Liu Xinsheng, mayor of Paphos, Savvas Vergas, and municipal officer of external relations and tourism, Yiannis Anthis came as Paphos in particular is actively trying to rejuvenate its ailing housing sector by attracting Chinese investors.
According to the ambassador, 600 houses have been sold to Chinese buyers so far and the Chinese have invested 200 million euros in property in Cyprus. “We discussed relations between China and Cyprus and how to develop a tourist and business relationship,” Anthis said. It was the ambassador’s first official visit to Paphos since being appointed in the summer, but according to Anthis he has made several private visits to meet with the growing Chinese community. Potential problems for this group also featured during the discussion with Anthis assuring the ambassador
that none had yet surfaced as far as the municipality was aware. “In general terms we did mention that there are both good and bad Cypriot businessmen just as there are good and bad Chinese investors. We didn’t get into specifics but we agreed to share mutual information in the future. No details were discussed,” Anthis said. “We spoke of co-operation on several levels,” he added. Estate agents have been promoting the sale of Paphos properties, hosting property exhibitions in China while property promotion billboards in Chinese characters have become a common sight around town.
Billboards advertising properties for sale in Chinese have become increasingly common Cyprus is an attractive destination for Chinese investors as it can function as a stepping stone to mainland Europe. As non-European nationals, prospective Chinese buyers need to make a minimum property purchase of €300,000, and prove they have adequate finances to stay in Cyprus. They are then entitled to apply for and receive a permanent residency permit for themselves and their family. According to George Leptos of the Leptos Group, whose portfolio includes a large proportion of the properties in Paphos, the company’s Chinese clients are interested in ready or almost ready properties, of a
value ranging from €300,000 to €800,000. “We also spoke of the possibility of promoting Paphos to the Chinese and of organising a future event in China. We will also invite a Chinese delegation here to Paphos,” said Anthis. Vergas told the ambassador that he was ready to help and do all that he can to facilitate investors to come and live in Paphos and to develop businesses here. In addition, Paphos is hoping to establish a direct flight connecting the coastal town with China. According to Leptos, who is also the head of EVE, the Paphos chamber of commerce and industry, in-
creased efforts have been made to attract Chinese investment, Chinese buyers of residential properties and tourists. He said recently that the Cyprus Tourism Organisation had contacted Chinese tour operators and airlines to increase tourism from China and to establish direct flights between the two countries. Officials hope that establishing direct flights would significantly boost property investments and develop the potentially vast Chinese tourist market, as well as attracting direct Chinese investments in areas other than residential properties.
Police list ways to prevent thefts as burglaries continue to rise
Valuables should be kept in a safe deposit box By Peter Stevenson AS BURGLARIES continue to rise, police have stepped up their campaign to inform the public about measures they should take to prevent thefts and burglaries and how to protect their property. During the campaign members of the police public relations office are handing out flyers containing information for the public about preventing burglaries and thefts. “We urge the public to be conscientious and also use common sense,” a policeman from the press office said yesterday. The flyers list 21 points explaining how to prevent theft. The main points are, locking up before leaving your house, even if you are going to be away for a short period, keeping your shutters and curtains closed and never giving your house keys to cleaners or other people. Britain BRITAIN TODAY Tweeters may be prosecuted BRITONS who posted remarks on Twitter and in blogs wrongly identifying a senior Conservative politician as a child sex abuser might face prosecution after police said yesterday they were looking to see if any crimes had been committed. Lord Alistair McAlpine, an ally of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, was widely named on social media sites as being the unidentified politician accused in a report by the BBC’s Newsnight programme of abusing boys in social care. McAlpine, who is 70 and in poor health, vigorously denied the claims and the abuse victim central to the BBC story later confirmed the peer was not one of his attackers. London’s Metropolitan Police said no criminal allegations had yet been made, but that detectives would be meeting with McAlpine to begin assessing whether action should be taken.

Williams: Church has lost credibility over vote

scrutiny following the defeat of the legislation. The vote Tuesday night came in spite of 42 out of 44 dioceses in the Church of England backing the legislation. Dr Williams said the Church of England “rightly” insisted on a high level of consent for change. “Failure to secure a twothirds majority in the House of Laity does not mean that those high levels of consent are necessarily wrong; they do mean that there is a great deal of further work to be done,” he said. “But that sense of Synod which, for admirable, praiseworthy reasons, gives very strong voice to minority, that sense of Synod needs some explaining and some exploring if it is not simply to be seen as a holding to hostage of Synod by certain groups. “That’s part of the explaining we need to do.” Downing Street said Prime Minister David Cameron shared the disappointment at the result but stressed it was a decision for the Church rather than government or Parliament.
DAVID Cameron has insisted the Children’s Commissioner has his full support after government sources reportedly described a report into the sexual exploitation of youngsters as “hysterical”. The interim report by Deputy Children’s Commissioner Sue Berelowitz found 2,409 youngsters were the victims of gangs intent on carrying out sexual abuse, while another 16,500 children remained at “high risk”. There had been fears the government was trying to undermine the findings after several reports quoted a government source calling the report as “hysterical”, “highly emotional” and “half-baked”. But the Prime Minister insisted the Children’s Commissioner Dr Maggie Atkinson must be allowed to produce the final version of the report, as he described the initial findings “extremely disturbing”. Cameron told MPs: “This is a very serious issue that is being examined. “We need to give every encouragement to the Children’s Commissioner to ensure the final version of the report is produced.”
‘We have a lot of explaining to do’ By Martha Linden THE Archbishop of Canterbury said yesterday the Church of England has a “lot of explaining” to do after the General Synod rejected legislation introducing the first women bishops. Dr Rowan Williams said the Church had “undoubtedly” lost a “measure of credibility” in wider society following the defeat of the legislation. He told the General Synod: “We have, to put it very bluntly, a lot of explaining to do. “Whatever the motivation for voting yesterday, whatever the theological principle on which people acted and spoke, the fact remains
Outgoing Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams had supported the bid to introduce women bishops that a great deal of this discussion is not intelligible to our wider society. “Worse than that, it seems as if we are wilfully blind to some of the trends and priorities of that wider society.
Downpours cause chaos
Daily Mail has agreed to sell its regional titles to a new company led by tabloid veteran David Montgomery, in the biggest shake up of the UK newspaper market for years. Under the plans, the new group will be called Local World and reach a weekly newspaper audience of 6 million readers and 7 million online users, through its 107 print titles and 60 websites.
HOMES and roads were left underwater yesterday as heavy downpours caused widespread disruption across Britain. Vehicles were abandoned and there were reports of entire villages being cut off as flood water surged through lanes and streets and into homes. Emergency services were also called to a flooded property to help rescue a woman who had gone into labour and needed to get to hospital. Dozens of schools were closed and businesses including pubs and restaurants forced to turn away customers following the floods. In some cases, more than two inches of rain fell overnight, with heavy clouds clearing for brighter spells this afternoon in much of the worst-hit areas such as Devon, Dorset and Somerset. But forecasters warned it was only a temporary reprieve, with parts of England and Wales braced for further deluges.

World WORLD TODAY Turkey wants NATO missile protection NATO said yesterday it would consider a Turkish request to deploy Patriot missiles on its territory to help it defend itself against any Syrian attacks. Ankara’s bid for the missiles followed talks with NATO allies about how to shore up security on the 900-km (560-mile) border with Syria after mortar rounds landed on Turkish territory, increasing concerns about the civil war spilling over into Syria’s neighbours. The head of NATO said the alliance would discuss the request “without delay”, while ambassadors from the 28 NATO members convened a meeting at the alliance’s Brussels headquarters. “Such a deployment would augment Turkey’s air defence capabilities to defend the population and territory of Turkey,” Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said. “It would contribute to the de-escalation of the crisis along NATO’s southeastern border.”
New Iran nuke talks sought SIX world powers agreed yesterday to seek renewed talks with Iran as fast as possible, reflecting a heightened sense of urgency to resolve a long rift over Tehran’s disputed nuclear activity and avert the threat of war. Their call coincided with growing evidence of Iran expanding nuclear capacity in an underground bunker virtually impervious to attack and follows the November 6 reelection of US President Barack Obama, which has cleared the way for new contacts. Senior diplomats from the six countries - the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany - met in Brussels yesterday to consider new negotiating tactics, despite abiding scepticism that a deal with Tehran can be reached.
Russian officials blame technical error for brief YouTube blacklisting By Gabriela Baczynska RUSSIAN officials offered assurances they were not seeking to block access to YouTube yesterday, saying a technical error caused the popular video-sharing website to appear briefly on a register of sites containing banned content. For about an hour, YouTube was listed on the newly-created register, which the government says is needed to fight child pornography but critics of President Vladimir Putin fear may be used to censor the Internet and stifle dissent. YouTube was subsequently removed from the register, maintained by Russia’s communications watchdog agency, Roskomnadzor, which said there was no plan to block ac-
cess to the site. “An unfortunate technical mistake occurred,” Roskomnadzor spokesman Vladimir Pikov said. “We work closely with them (YouTube). Basically, we see no reason now to apply towards its owners any preventive measures.” Russia’s consumer protection rights watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, said YouTube took down several videos earlier this week as requested by officials under the new law tightening Internet controls that took effect on Nov. 1. The blacklist includes websites containing pornographic images of children, instructions on how to make, use and where to get drugs, as well as others describing suicide methods. Under the legislation, websites
have three days to remove content considered harmful or illegal by Russian authorities before they can be blocked. YouTube is owned by US-based Google Inc. A spokeswoman for Google in Russia, Alla Zabrovskaya, said all requests from the authorities are handled by the company’s global headquarters in the United States. Anti-Putin activists, who have used the Internet to organise demonstrations, say the law is part of a crackdown on dissent orchestrated by the Kremlin since Putin, a former KGB spy, returned to presidency in May. After a stint as prime minister, Putin was elected to a third presidential term in March after a series of opposition protests that were the biggest of his 13-year rule.

‘Kidnapping in Mali won’t pressure France’
Chaplain arrested for sex crimes
Six French hostages already held by al Qaeda
THE Roman Catholic chaplain for one of Italy’s biggest prisons has been arrested on charges of demanding sexual favours from inmates in exchange for cigarettes and basic necessities such as soap, shampoo and hair brushes. Father Alberto Barin, 51, was arrested late on Tuesday. Police said he had forced at least six male inmates, all of them non-Italians jailed for minor crimes, to have sex with him in his office or elsewhere in the San Vittore prison, in Milan. A magistrate’s arrest warrant said Barin used his power and influence within the prison to “almost obsessively satisfy his sexual urges”. When Barin managed to help get a prisoner released early, he would ask the inmate to come to his office before leaving to re-pay the favour by having sex, police said. The investigation began after an inmate told prison authorities, who then set up hidden video cameras in his office and elsewhere in the prison. The Roman Catholic Church around the world has been hit by various sex accusations. The most serious ones involve sexual abuse of minors by priests and attempts to cover up the scandals by moving abusers from parish to parish instead of defrocking them.
Hollande stressed that the French national had not been seized in the Islamistcontrolled north of Mali
By Tiemoko Diallo and John Irish FRANCE will not be pressurised by the kidnapping of a French citizen in southwest Mali, President Francois Hollande said yesterday, stressing the hostage had not been seized in the Islamist-controlled north. The kidnapping may increase tensions as African nations draw up plans to intervene in Mali where almost two-thirds of the country fell under Islamist hands after a coup earlier this year. While there was no immediate claim of responsibility, Hollande appeared to single out al Qaeda’s north African arm, which already holds six French nationals in the Sahara region. “We will do everything to find our citizens,” Hollande told a joint news conference with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in Paris.

“For the terrorists, capturing a hostage is a way to put pressure on us, but it won’t weigh on us. I have already told the hostage takers that it was time to free them (hostages).” The French man crossed into Mali from Mauritania by car on Tuesday morning and was taken by armed men near the Malian town of Kayes, close to the border of both Mauritania and Senegal, according to Mauritanian state
press agency AMI. The north of Mali is controlled by Islamist groups that collect millions of dollars from smuggling and kidnap ransoms, but they typically operate much further to the north in a vast and lawless desert abandoned by government forces since a Tuareg rebellion and March coup d’etat. Hamas and Israel agree to Gaza ceasefire
A Palestinian boy cries after the death of his cousin in a second Israeli strike on the building housing AFP’s offices in Gaza City yesterday
Palestinian, Israeli and Egyptian officials confirm truce on eighth day of conflict By Marwa Awad and Nidal al-Mughrabi ISRAEL and the Islamist Hamas movement ruling the Gaza Strip agreed yesterday to an Egyptiansponsored ceasefire to halt an eight-day conflict that killed 162 Palestinians and five Israelis. Both sides fought right up to 9 p.m (1900 GMT) when hostilities were due to stop, with several explosions shaking Gaza City and rockets hitting the Israeli city of Beersheba. Even after the deadline passed, a dozen rockets from Gaza landed in Israel, all in open areas, a police spokesman said.
If it holds, the truce will give 1.7 million Gazans respite from days of ferocious air strikes and halt rocket salvoes from militants that unnerved a million people in southern Israel and reached Tel Aviv and Jerusalem for the first time. “Allahu akbar, (God is greatest), dear people of Gaza you won,” blared mosque loudspeakers in the enclave as the truce took effect. “You have broken the arrogance of the Jews.” Fifteen minutes later, wild celebratory gunfire echoed across the darkened streets of Gaza, which gradually filled with crowds waving Palestinian flags. Ululating women leaned out of windows and fireworks lit up
the sky. Hamas leaders welcomed the agreement, calling it a triumph for armed resistance, and thanking Egypt for its role. Some Israelis staged protests against the deal, notably in the southern town of Kiryat Malachi, where three Israelis were killed by a Gaza rocket during the conflict, army radio said. Announcing the agreement in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr said mediation had “resulted in understandings to cease fire, restore calm and halt the bloodshed”. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, standing beside Amr, thanked Egypt’s Islamist President Moham-
ed Mursi for peace efforts that showed “responsibility, leadership” in the region. The Gaza conflict erupted in a Middle East already shaken by last year’s Arab uprisings that toppled several veteran U.S.-backed leaders, including Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak, and by a civil war in Syria, where Bashar al-Assad is fighting for survival. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had agreed to “exhaust this
opportunity for an extended truce”, but told his people a tougher approach might be required in the future. “I know there are citizens expecting a more severe military action, and perhaps we shall need to do so,” he said. The Israeli leader, who faces a parliamentary election in January, delivered a similar message earlier in a telephone call with U.S. President Barack Obama, his office said.
Obama in turn reiterated his country’s commitment to Israel’s security and promised to seek funds for a joint missile defence programme, the White House said. Hamas leaders taunted Israel, with the movement’s exiled chief Khaled Meshaal saying in Cairo that the Jewish state had failed in its military “adventure”. But he pledged to uphold the truce if the Israelis complied with it.

UN defends failed efforts to halt the capture of Goma THE United Nations defended its failed effort to prevent rebels from seizing the Congolese city of Goma, saying yesterday its helicopters had fired hundreds of rockets at rebels but were unable to beat them back when their forces sharply increased. Advancing M23 rebels seized the city on Tuesday after soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s army fled. Goma is a regional headquarters of a UN force that is tasked with assisting government troops to protect civilians, but peacekeepers largely looked on once the army fled and the city fell. France called the failure of the peacekeeping force, which has heavy weapons and helicopters, to halt the advance of the lightlyarmed rebels “absurd”, and said its mandate should be reviewed. UN helicopter gunships flew 17 sorties, firing 500 rockets and four missiles in the defence of the town, the United Nations said yesterday in a statement giving its account of the battle. Two South African peacekeepers were injured, it added. About 500 rebels made an initial advance on Nov. 15, of whom about 64 were killed by army forces backed by UN helicopter
gunships, it said. But two days later the rebels returned in far greater numbers, launching a new attack with 3,000 men. “Facing this new offensive ... which had a surprising firepower, Congolese forces were determined in the defence of their positions before pulling back ... despite support from their and our attack helicopters,” the U.N. statement said. The sudden increase in the size and capability of the rebel force is likely to add to accusations that the fighters are receiving backing from abroad. Congo and United Nations experts have accused Rwanda of supporting the rebels, a charge Rwanda rejects. The UN Security Council has expressed “concern at reports indicating that external support continues to be provided to the M23, including through troop reinforcement, tactical advice and the supply of equipment” but did not name Rwanda. The rebellion was launched eight months ago by mutinous troops accusing the government of failing to stick to a 2009 deal with insurgents to end a previous conflict. Yesterday they said their aim was to “liberate” the country.

INDIA secretly hanged the lone survivor of the Pakistanbased militant squad responsible for a rampage through Mumbai that killed 166 people, sparking celebrations days before the fourth anniversary of the assault on the financial capital. Pakistan national Mohammad Ajmal Kasab was the enduring image of the bloody assault, which traumatised India and raised fears of copycat attacks on foreign cities. Pictures of the boyish gunman wearing a black T-shirt and toting an AK-47 rifle as he strode through Mumbai’s train station were published
India, Pakistan ties are still sensitive post 2008 rampage around the world. Kasab was executed yesterday morning amid great secrecy, underscoring the political sensitivity of the November 26, 2008, massacre, which still casts a pall over relations between nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India. “All the police officers and personnel who lost their life in the battle against the terrorists have today been served justice,” Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said after Kasab was hanged in a jail in Pune, southeast of Mumbai. Kasab was charged with 86
offences, including murder and waging war against the Indian state, in a chargesheet running to more than 11,000 pages. It was the first time a capital sentence had been carried out in India since 2004. There was celebration on the streets of Mumbai and other cities as news of the execution spread, but militant groups in Pakistan reacted angrily, as did residents of his home village of Faridkot. People set off fireworks and handed out sweets in Indian cities. Some held up photos of
Kasab with a rope noose superimposed over his head. Attack survivor Vishnu Zende, who was working at Mumbai’s train station where nearly 60 people were killed, said the execution brought it all back. “When I heard the news of Kasab’s execution today, I remembered those horrifying moments of the attack,” Zende said. “My eyes were filled with tears.” An effigy of Kasab was hung by the neck from the entrance gate of the station by a rightwing local party. In Pakistan, a senior commander of the Lashkar-eTaiba (LeT) militant group, which India blames for the assault on Mumbai, called Kasab a hero and said he would inspire more attacks.

a flight of eight steps, cautiously lifting its legs one by one, and taking about a minute to go up each step. With obstacles which are not as even and predictable as steps, such as the debris at the plant, it may need as much as 10 minutes to figure out how to clear the object, Toshiba acknowledged. And if it ever falls, it will not be able to get up on its own. Nevertheless, Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) said it might use the robot to inspect the suppression chamber of the Fukushima plant, where a devastating meltdown took place after a mammoth tsunami slammed into north-eastern Japan on March 11 2011. Toshiba began developing the robot after the disaster with hopes that it would prove useful in helping to decommission the plant. No human has been able to enter the highly-radiated chamber since the tsunami disaster.
UNITED Airlines bears no responsibility for suspected security lapses at a Maine airport, which allowed hijackers to board the American Airlines plane that crashed into one of the World Trade Centre towers on September 11, 2001, a federal judge ruled. US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein granted a request by United and its parent United Continental Holdings Inc yesterday to dismiss negligence claims brought by Larry Silverstein, the leaseholder of the World Trade Centre property. Lawyers for United and Silverstein weren’t immediately available for comment. The decision concerned the destruction of 7 World Trade Centre, which collapsed hours after being pierced by debris from the crash of AMR Corp’s American Airlines Flight 11 into 1 World Trade Centre. “It was not within United’s range of apprehension that terrorists would slip through the (Portland airport) security screening checkpoint, fly to Logan (airport), proceed through another air carrier’s security screening and board that air carrier’s flight, hijack the flight and crash it into 1 World Trade Centre, let alone that 1 World Trade Centre would therefore collapse and cause Tower 7 to collapse,” Hellerstein wrote.
JAPANESE technology giant Toshiba has unveiled a robot which the company says can withstand high radiation and help in nuclear disasters. However, it remains unclear what exactly the new machine will be capable of doing if and when it gets the go-ahead to enter Japan’s crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. The four-legged robot can climb over debris and venture into radiated areas off-limits to human workers. One significant innovation, Toshiba said, is that its wireless network can be controlled in high radiation, automatically seeking better transmission when reception becomes weak. But the machine, which looks like a coolbox on wobbly metal legs, also appears prone to glitches. The robot made a jerky mis-step during a demonstration to reporters, freezing with one leg up in the air. It had to be lifted by several people and rebooted. The robot was also notably slow in climbing

Greece’s lenders again fail to clinch debt deal
HP let down by advisers in debacle
Juncker: technicalities holding up agreement
WHEN Hewlett Packard acquired Autonomy last year for $11.1 billion, some 15 different financial, legal and accounting firms were involved in the transaction - and none raised a flag about what HP said Tuesday was a major accounting fraud. HP stunned Wall Street with the allegations about its British software unit and took an $8.8 billion writedown, the latest in a string of reversals for the storied company. HP Chief Executive Meg Whitman, who was a director at the company at the time of the deal, said the board had relied on accounting firm Deloitte for vetting Autonomy’s financials and that KPMG was subsequently hired to audit Deloitte. HP had many other advisers as well: boutique investment bank Perella Weinberg Partners to serve as its lead adviser, along with Barclays. Banking advisers on both sides of the deal were paid $68.8 million, according to data from Thomson Reuters/Freeman Consulting. Barclays pocketed the biggest banker fee of the transaction at $18.1 million and Perella was paid $12 million. On Autonomy’s side of the table were Frank Quattrone’s Qatalyst Partners, which specialises in tech deals and which picked up $11.6 million. UBS, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America were also advising Autonomy and were paid $5.4 million each. Slaughter & May and Morgan Lewis served as the company’s legal advisers. While regulators in the US and the UK, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are likely to spend many months if not years probing what happened, legal experts said on Tuesday it wasn’t clear if any of the advisers would ultimately be held liable.
By Andreas Rinke and Lefteris Papadimas INTERNATIONAL lenders failed for the second week to reach a deal to release emergency aid for Greece and will try again next Monday, but Germany signalled that significant divisions remain. Eurozone finance ministers, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank were unable to agree in 12 hours of overnight talks in Brussels on how to make the country’s debt sustainable. They want a solution before paying the next loan tranche which is urgently needed to keep Greece afloat. Several European officials played down the delay, saying the disagreements were technical and a deal would be reached when they meet again on November 26. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said he was confident the funding gap could be filled by a mixture of letting Greece buy back its own debt at a discount, tapping ECB profits on Greek bond purchases, and lowering interest rates on government loans to Athens, but not below the cost to lenders. “Additional measures are needed and we have spoken about this intensively with the International Monetary Fund. We agree essentially that the gap can and will be filled, that a buyback programme of Greek debt on the
German Chancellor Merkel talks with Finance Minister Schaeuble at the Bundestag yesterday in Berlin market will be carried out,” he told reporters. Schaeuble earlier told conservative lawmakers at a closed-door briefing that the lenders were split over how to define debt sustainability and fill a hole in Greek finances. “He sees the extension of the debt sustainability goal as one of the main bones of contention. The other is how to cover the Greek financing gap of 14 billion euros through 2014,” said one lawmaker who attended the meeting of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s centre-right Christian Democrats in parliament. European governments want to give Greece an extra
two years, until 2022, to cut its debt to a sustainable level of 120 per cent of GDP but the IMF does not agree. The Europeans, led by Germany, are refusing to write off any loans. Both options would make it easier for Greece to meet the targets in the bailout programme. Merkel told the lawmakers the gap could be plugged by lowering interest rates on loans to Greece, extending their maturity to 30 years from 15, and increasing guarantees provided to the eurozone’s temporary EFSF bailout fund, in which Germany would take its share, a participant said. “I believe there are chances,
one doesn’t know for sure, but there are chances to get a solution on Monday,” she told the Bundestag lower house of parliament during a debate. Greece needs the next 31-billion-euro aid tranche to keep servicing its debt and avoid bankruptcy. Its next major repayment is in mid-December. Athens says it has carried out the tough reforms required in the bailout programme but needs more time to reach fiscal targets agreed with lenders because its economy keeps shrinking. French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said agreement was close, echoing overnight comments from Euro-
(AFP)
group chairman Jean-Claude Juncker, who said talks were stuck on technicalities. “We are a whisker away from a deal. I am very confident we will get there on Monday,” Moscovici told Europe 1 radio. Greece is increasingly frustrated about the repeated delays in releasing the aid and says it has done what is necessary. “Greece did what it had committed it would do. Our partners, together with the IMF, also have to do what they have taken on to do,” Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said. “Any technical difficulties in finding a technical solution do not justify any negligence or delays.”
British borrowing worsens, making deficit reduction harder Rates
Osborne presents his next update on December 5
BRITAIN borrowed much more than expected in October, making finance minister George Osborne’s bid to reduce the deficit and shunt the economy away from potential stagnation much harder to achieve. The numbers are the last figures to be released before Osborne presents his twice-yearly fiscal update on December 5, and - after a positive surprise in September - extend the borrowing overshoots seen for most of the tax year. Separately, minutes of the last Bank of England rates meeting showed lit-
tle appetite for more stimulus, cutting off at least for now that avenue for growth support for the economy. It all follows warnings by Bank of England Governor Mervyn King last week that Britain faces a period of weak growth and rising inflation. The Office for National Statistics said the government’s preferred measure, public sector net borrowing excluding financial sector interventions, came in at £8.604 billion in October, up from £5.937 billion in October 2011. This was well above economists’ average forecast of £6 billion, and higher
even than the most pessimistic estimate in a Reuters poll of 19 analysts. Britain’s government has made reducing a budget deficit that peaked at more than 11 per cent of national income its top political priority since it came to power in May 2010, but slow economic growth has made this a major challenge. Further stimulus from the Bank of England also looks unlikely in the short term, as minutes of November’s policy decision, released earlier yesterday, showed policymakers voted 8-1 against any further stimulus.
US jobless claims drop, manufacturing shows stronger growth THE number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits fell last week but remained elevated due to superstorm Sandy, a sign the storm is proving to be a substantial disruption to the labour market. Other data yesterday showed stronger growth in US manufacturing in November. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped
41,000 to a seasonally adjusted 410,000, the Labour Department said. That was smack in line with the median forecast in a Reuters poll. The storm has distorted a range of economic indicators, making it harder to gauge the underlying health of the US economy. Economists thought yesterday’s readings nevertheless point to a struggling jobs market.
“There appears to be a noticeable deceleration of growth in the fourth quarter,” said Peter Hooper, an economist at Deutsche Bank in New York. “It would not be surprising if some of the new jobless claims are due to underlying weakness in the labour market,” he said. US financial markets showed little reaction to the jobless data as investors focused on
developments in Europe and trading slowed ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday today. US stock futures were up slightly, while Treasury debt prices were flat. An analyst from the Labour Department said several states were still reporting an increase in claims due to Sandy, a mammoth storm that slammed into the East Coast on October 29.

Lashings of hypocrisy in AKEL’s demand for transparency THE COMMUNISTS of AKEL never miss an opportunity to advertise their alleged moral superiority and supposedly ethical, political behaviour. They claim they are always guided by noble motives, in contrast to the members of all other parties, putting the best interests of the people and society above everything else. It is all part of the AKEL myth the party has successfully promoted over the years. The fuss AKEL is currently making about publicising the capital statements of the presidential candidates is a case in point. For several days now its spokesmen have been asking why Nicos Anastasiades and Giorgos Lillikas have not released a statement with their assets and liabilities, implying the candidates were hiding something. The AKEL candidate Stavros Malas had done this several weeks ago, allowing his backers to take the moral high ground and take shots at his rivals for their ‘refusal’ to follow suit. Anastasiades had said he would release a capital statement when he officially submitted his candidacy, but this was not deemed acceptable by AKEL spokesman Giorgos Loucaides who held a news conference on Wednesday to accuse Anastasiades of “subterfuge and hypocrisy” and to ask why he needed another two months to submit the statement. What gave AKEL the right to dictate the time when the statement had to be released, Loucaides did not say. It was rather rich of AKEL to accuse any rival of hypocrisy. This is the party which managed to have debts of €10 million, owed by party-controlled companies to the Bank of Cyprus, written off. It is the same party which boasted a couple of years ago that it had a surplus of €4 million and last month bailed out cash-strapped football club Omonia with a hand-out of €350,000. In a country in which parties never make ends meet it would be interesting to know how AKEL has such cash surpluses that it can afford to make donations to football clubs. Of course, when it comes to party funding and finances, AKEL, like the other parties, opposes transparency and the release of information for public scrutiny. Does this not smack of hypocrisy and double standards? Why should presidential candidates be obliged to make their assets public and not political parties? And did Demetris Christofias release a capital statement before the last presidential elections? If he did not, it might be an idea for AKEL, which is so committed to transparency, to demand that the outgoing president and ministers also released a capital statement when they left office. We are not saying anyone did anything illegal, but transparency and the moral obligation to make public a capital statement must apply to everyone in top public posts.

The alternative to peace is an endless cycle of violence Comment Gareth Evans
T
HE WISEST words on the Second Gaza War may have come from an Israeli living in a kibbutz near the Gaza border. “If you want to defend me… Don’t send the Israel Defence Forces for us in order to ‘win’,” Michal Vasser wrote in Haaretz on November 15. “Start thinking about the long term and not just about the next election. Try to negotiate until white smoke comes up through the chimney. Hold out a hand to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Stop with the ‘pinpoint assassinations’ and look into the civilians’ eyes on the other side as well.” Israel is, of course, entitled to defend itself from rocket attacks. But the lesson of the last two decades is that attacks stop, and intifadas do not start, when there is a prospect of peace - and that, when there is no such prospect, Palestinian militancy is uncontainable. The chances of a comprehensive and sustainable two-state settlement now being negotiated with Mahmoud Abbas’ West Bank-based Palestinian Authority (PA) - and of its acceptance, albeit grudgingly, by Gaza’s Hamas after a popular vote - may be slim. But the only alternative is an endlessly recurring cycle of deadly violence between Israelis and Palestinians. The immediate priority is to calm and stabilise the situation in Gaza. But if there are not to be more and even worse eruptions, Israeli policymakers need to ask themselves some fundamental questions. So, too, must their rusted-on supporters in the United States and countries like mine. How is peace fostered if the elimination or dramatic diminution of Hamas’ capability leaves Gaza in the hands of even more militant groups, and gives Islamists throughout the region another recruitment tool? How is Israel’s national security served when, by its action in Gaza and inaction with Abbas, it jeopardises its longstanding and hard-won peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan
An explosion from an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City yesterday (both now looking very fragile indeed in the aftermath of the Arab Spring)? How can Israel’s preferred Palestinian leaders, Abbas and PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, be left with any credible capacity to negotiate if talks cannot begin until, as Israel insists, they retreat on their minimum condition of a settlement freeze in the Occupied Territories? For all that Israel downplays its significance, the Arab Peace Initiative of 2002 still offers a critically important deal: full normalisation of relations by the entire Arab world in exchange for a comprehensive peace settlement. How long can this Arab League position be sustained with peace talks going nowhere?
ON THIS DAY NOVEMBER 22
Another big question for Israel is whether it can accept the consequences if a two-state solution disappears completely from the agenda. Israel, as founding father David Ben Gurion warned, can be a Jewish state, it can be a democratic state, and it can be a state occupying the whole of historical Israel; but it cannot be all three. According to the CIA World Factbook, Jews currently outnumber non-Jews, by 6.4 million to 5.6 million, in the total area of historical Palestine. But, with a much lower birthrate and declining immigration, it is only a matter of time before Jews are in a minority. With Gaza still smoldering, yet another burning question is
waiting in the wings. What are Israel and its supporters supposed to gain by bitterly resisting the United Nations General Assembly resolution recognising Palestine as a non-member “observer state” (with a status like the Vatican), which now seems bound to be introduced, and passed by a huge international majority, on or around November 29? The text of the draft resolution now in circulation contains no offensive language. It makes clear both that full UN membership remains to be determined and that final-status issues like borders, refugees, Jerusalem, and security all remain to be negotiated. True, passage of this resolution might give Palestine some standing that it now lacks to seek prosecutions in the International Criminal Court for alleged violations of international law. But the ICC is not a kangaroo court, and allegations without substance can be expected to be treated accordingly. Palestinian statehood has always been an indispensable requirement of Israel’s own longterm peace and security, and it is overwhelmingly in Israel’s interest to defuse rather than further inflame the issue. This need has become more urgent than ever in view of the new realities of power in the region. In short, Israel should treat the UN vote not as an excuse for renewed confrontation, but as an opportunity for a fresh start to serious negotiations. The US reaction is key: Rather than punishing the PA, and maybe the UN as well, it should use the resolution to propose the kind of diplomatic circuitbreaker for which the world has long been hoping. Of course, to put on the table a comprehensive settlement plan that addresses all of the final-status issues, with compromises that all sides could be persuaded and pressured to accept, would require statesmanship. Unhappily, that quality has been agonisingly absent from Middle East diplomacy for almost as long as anyone can remember. Noticeboard Crowne Plaza Limassol in world top five
New Londa chef bids to please every palate New Cyta platform deployed INFINERA (NASDAQ: INFN), a leading provider of Digital Optical Networks, and Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta), announced recently the deployment of Infinera’s DTN-X platform, featuring 500 Gigabit per second (Gb/s) long-haul super-channels, across the TE-North Cable System, connecting Asia and Africa to Europe. Cyta selected the DTN-X platform to deliver commercial services to its customers given the scalability, efficiency, simplicity and reliability that the solution delivers to its network. As Cyprus' leading telecommunications provider, Cyta provides the full spectrum of electronic communications services ranging from fixed and mobile telephony to internet service provision and broadband applications. Cyta operates and maintains the ALEXANDROS subsystem, part of Telecom Egypt’s TE-North Cable System which stretches 3,600 km connecting Abu Talat, Egypt, to Marseilles, France, with a branch to Pentaskhinos, Cyprus. Infinera’s DTN-X platform will allow Cyta to add additional capacity to the ALEXANDROS subsystem, with the ability to upgrade TE North’s terrestrial network in the future, in order to serve global operators in the Middle East, Asia and Africa region. “We are delighted to work with Infinera to deploy the DTN-X platform on this critical international telecommunications route,” said Yiannis Koulias, Cyta’s Director of National & International Wholesale Market.

“Great food is as a work of art,” says Giovanni Caracciolo, the new, recently appointed Executive Chef for the Caprice restaurant at Limassol’s Londa Hotel. And Giovanni should know: the talented Italian chef has hot-footed it to the Caprice from La Scala Opera House in Milan, via Capana in Athens’ Kolonaki district, to bring an air of authentic Italian passion to the Caprice’s new creations. The menu has been renewed and refreshed and already the tasteful and tasty creations are generating enormous positive attention. Giovanni’s love affair with food began at 8 years old, where he was happier preparing traditional French onion soup in his mother’s kitchen than playing with friends. By the time he left school at 18 he was determined to be a chef. His hard work and dedica-
tion paid off and by the tender age of just 23 (a mere novice in gastronomy circles), Giovanni was appointed second chef at one of Milan’s most celebrated 4-star establishments. “The Executive Chef at the time was 65, so yes, I guess it was quite an achievement,” he admits. Giovanni’s philosophy for creating delicious food, “It must be simple, beautiful, tasty,” has become the Caprice mantra. “I want my team to ‘feel’ the food, not just prepare it.” “Our Caprice guests are very happy with the new menu; Giovanni’s natural flair and creativity in the kitchen has already made a dramatic impact,” noted Jochen Niemann, general manager at the Londa Hotel. For reservations at Londa’s Caprice Restaurant please telephone: 25 865540.

THE results are in and this month the Crowne Plaza Limassol has done exceptionally well, placing Cyprus among the best Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts worldwide! Every month Crowne Plaza headquarters collect guest satisfaction surveys from all 400 Crowne Plaza properties worldwide and enter them into a central database. Over the last 3 months the Crowne Plaza Limassol has been rising in the rankings, such that this month it placed in the TOP 3 in Europe and the TOP 5 worldwide based on guest feedback. What set it apart from the competition was ‘the caring and genuine attitude of the staff’, ‘the cleanliness of public areas’ and the ‘quality of its restaurant’ – La Brezza – which opened earlier this year.

Tomorrow Other Events Literature and wine Join authors Erato IoannouMoustaka and Mateo Jarrin Cuvi for a reading of their stories Madwoman Story and Guerrillas Marching Down at Diachroniki Gallery tomorrow evening. Their short fiction stories were selected as part of the Tell Me a Tale Short Story Competition organised by the UK’s Fluster Magazine and Cyprus-based Armida Publications, which sought to present a collection of the 20 most inspired, most creative short stories. All the stories were submitted by authors who are published and unpublished alike, from around the world. In addition, these worlds of fiction are as diverse in scope and theme as they were
On The Scene Theatre Misery is alive on stage The stage adaptation of one of Stephen King’s most memorable psychological thrillers, Misery, will be presented to theatregoers by the Satiriko Theatro from tomorrow till December 29 for 12 performances. Misery is a dark and twisted tale which enthrals the audience from the very beginning to its climactic and unexpected end. Originally a short story writer, King’s first novel Carrie went on to become an award-winning movie. Since then, he has captured the imagination of fans around the world with his chilling stories - over thirty turned into feature length films, in which clowns are never good, pets are seemingly possessed and women a tad unpredictable and unstable. And the latter is true of his female lead Annie Wilkes, Misery’s main character. For those who missed the movie (and the book), Misery tells the story of bestselling author Paul Sheldon. When driving through the mountains after finishing his latest work, his car leaves the road and he is seriously injured. Hampered by his physical incapacitation and the inclem-
inspired by an album of photographs that was made available to each author through Fluster Magazine’s online Flickr Group. The stories in this collection show a remarkable range of styles and themes. We have tramps quoting Keats, conversations with the dead and moving memories from the past. We enter strange worlds, wild imaginations and the obscure Art world. So, as you head for the gallery tomorrow evening, be ready for a fantastic concoction of stories by Moustaka and Cuvi. But literature won’t be the only activity on the menu, as the reading will be followed by wine tasting hosted by Oenothiki La Caudalie, a local purveyor of fine French wines. Cheeses and nibbles will also be available.

Tell Me A Tale Join two authors for a reading followed by wine tasting hosted by Oenothiki La Caudalie. November 23. Diachroniki Gallery 1, Arsinois 84, Old Nicosia. 7pm. Free. Tel: 22-680145/22-358028 ent weather that rages outside, Sheldon is trapped by his ‘success’ and he can only rely on the woman who saved him: Annie, his self-proclaimed “No. 1 fan.” She then forces him to write a new novel on her terms. In 1990, King’s novel was adapted for the screen, starring James Caan as Sheldon and Kathy Bates in an Oscar-winning performance as Wilkes. This Greek-language adaptation is directed by Christos Zanos and features Popi Avraam and Nikos Nikolaidis in the roles of Wilkes and Sheldon respectively. It’s the perfect King book to adapt for the stage, as the author keeps his focus on the two characters. It’s impotant to note that Satiriko will run two shows a week: on Friday and Saturday, with Saturday’s show starting at the unusually (but perhaps appropriately) late time of 11pm. Thrilling and moving, intense and emotional and featuring strong language and violent scenes, this production of Misery holds nothing back, taking the audience into the darker sides of fandom.

Pantheon International Xperimental Film & Animation Festival 10 Screenings of experimental films from home and abroad. November 23. Pantheon Gallery, 40 Evagorou Avenue, Pantheon Building, second floor, Nicosia. 8pm. Free. Tel: 22-670843 By Ledha Socratous
Pop along to your local cinema and you can choose to watch the latest instalment of James Bond, animation sequels or rom-coms to entertain you until the wee hours. But for all those film gems that fall between the cracks of traditional categories, head straight to the Pantheon International Xperimental Film & Animation Festival. Besides your average blockbuster there are many other films out there that enrich the audiovisual landscape and spark the imagination. Celebrating its 10th year of opening, the upcoming Xperimental festival is a showcase of all things weird and wonderful in cinema. More specifically, the festival screens experimental and short films, as well as animation, the main aim according to the organisers is to bring the artists and the public closer to the work which mirrors modern circumstances, troubled thoughts and personal views of their creators. These cinematic experiments in light, sound and image have the potential to produce wondrous and explosive results which can help expand our understanding of cinema. It’s important to note that the participants of the Xperimental festival have each developed their own unique style of film producing challenging popular and conventional modes of the moving image from difficult and hand-made films to extraordinarily radical and obscure compositions removing boundaries and limits within art.
Opening tomorrow night and running for one day only, Crowds will have the chance to view 22 films with the festivities being held on the second floor of the Pantheon Building in the Gallery and on the third floor Tritos. Approximately 100 artists ranging from 15 countries approached the festival organisers for participation, with each film selected on a basis of level of the creativity, authenticity and experimentation. This collection spans the recent, the kooky, the low-budget and the risky, with an incorporation of video art, and plenty of random imagery. The many artists chosen to partake in the event include: Huang Ya-Li (Taiwan) Mordholt & Steingrosse (Germany), Eva Olsson (Sweden) Theo Putzu (Spain) Jean-Gabriel Periot (France) and Antonis Antoniou (a local regular) to name just a few. Aside from screenings, during the projections and at break times, Tritos on the third floor will open its doors, with live DJ sets, where people will be able to roam around the space and mingle with the crowds.
NIGHTLIFE I guess that’s why they call it the Blue Bar
Above: Kathy Bates won the Best Actress Oscar in 1990 for her performance as Wilkes, a deranged recluse in the film Misery

William may be a royal, but he works the same 24-hour shifts as the rest of his fourman crew. Each morning starts with a briefing from the off-going duty crew, including an engineering brief, an update on specific air and ground activities in the area, and local and national weather forecasts.

The Search and Rescue Force attend an average of 1,950 callouts each year - RAF Valley typically responds to a high number, as it covers north Wales, popular for walking and climbing. One picture released shows Flt Lt Wales checking his aircraft – a Sea King Mark 3. He is one of two pilots in the crew, which also includes a winchman and a radar/winch operator. The Sea King can carry a maximum of 17 passengers and can fly for up to six hours with a range of 250 nautical miles.
Crew members are responsible for checking their own kit and William’s tasks include checking the airframe, fuel, hydraulic and navigation systems. The pictures also show the crew relaxing together during their downtime, from sharing a meal or resting in the crew-room. Computer games - especially those that are militarythemed such as Call of Duty are said to be a favourite, but the crew can never be more than 60 seconds away from their aircraft. Towards the end of their shift, they have to prepare a comprehensive brief for the next day’s crew then brief them on what lies ahead, before hanging up their flying kit and heading home. Once they have clocked off, they remain on “2nd standby” for the majority of the next day, in case they are needed to support more complex search and rescue operations. Source Code (Novacinema3, 21.00) We open on a train where our hero (Jake Gyllenhaal) sits opposite Christina (Michelle Monaghan), though he doesn’t know her name is Christina and in fact has no idea where he is. “I took your advice. It was good advice, thank you,” she says mysteriously. She seems to think he’s someone else - and in fact, when he looks in the mirror he really is someone else, with another man’s face (a man named Sean) staring back at him. “Everything’s going to be OK,” says Christina, just before an explosion suddenly rips through the train, killing everyone on board. You may wonder what the hell’s going on - and the answer lies in “source code”,
a high-tech military project linking Jake to the final memories of Sean (whoever he was); that explosion really happened, and everyone is dead - but our hero can inhabit Sean’s last eight minutes before he died, again and again like in Groundhog Day, his mission being to find whoever planted the bomb. An ingenious sci-fi thriller, tightly plotted for the first hour then increasingly philosophical. Check it out; made in 2011.
We Need to Talk About Kevin (Novacinema1, 22.00) We need to talk about mothers: the nightmare of being a Bad Mother, both in terms of rejecting your baby (“Stop resisting!” says the nurse during child-

birth) and, more abstractly, in terms of having created a Bad Son. Kevin (played as a teenager by Ezra Miller) is something of a demon child, constantly sneering and glaring and doing bad things - and Eva, his mum (played by Tilda Swinton), basically hates him, though she also feels secretly guilty because she knows she and he are alike. Kevin is cold, like his mum; it’s as though her frigid, controlling side has been made human - and, for instance, her face morphs into his at one point, and they both arrange egg-shells on their plate in exactly the same way. The material is too cheap and nasty (albeit based on a bestseller) to be truly great, but the film remains harrowing. Mothers will be freaked out, with good reason. Made in 2011.

Hitchcock trains lens on the love story of Alfred and Alma Anthony Hopkins plays the legendary director
By Eric Kelsey
By Chris Michaud SHE won Oscar gold for her uncanny performance as the Queen, but Helen Mirren’s latest portrayal finds her as the power behind the throne - or, more precisely, the director’s chair. In Hitchcock, Mirren stars opposite Anthony Hopkins as legendary director Alfred Hitchcock’s devoted wife Alma Reville, and early buzz has her a contender for another Oscar nomination. The film, which opens in limited release tomorrow, explores the domestic life of one of Hollywood’s most iconic and revered directors, set during the days of his struggle to put the ground-breaking 1960 classic, Psycho on the silver screen. Toggling back and forth between his on-set battles with censors and his cast including Janet Leigh (Scarlett Johansson), Vera Miles (Jessica Biel) and Tony Perkins (James D’Arcy), and his strained relationship with Alma as she copes with his well-documented obsession with his ravishing leading ladies, Hitchcock treats film fans to a glimpse of bygone Hollywood. But it paints a more nuanced and sympathetic portrait of the director Hopkins
J.R.R. Tolkien estate sues Warner Bros. over gambling and games
Actress Helen Mirren attends the film’s premiere in New York on Sunday called “a damaged man” than the recent television film The Girl, which dramatised the hell Hitchcock put Tippi Hedren through during filming of The Birds. “It’s a great role,” Mirren said of Alma, a film editor and assistant director in her own right who ceded the spotlight to her husband, but as the film makes clear was involved in virtually every aspect of his films and even re-cut “Psycho” into the masterpiece it is known as today. “So, you don’t turn that down,” she told Reuters. Having won her Oscar as one of the world’s most famous women, Mirren said she finds herself drawn to “the ones I don’t know anything about,
like Alma. Those are the most fun.” With little to go on, Mirren said she turned to the 2003 book Alma Hitchcock: The Woman Behind the Man, by the couple’s daughter Patricia, who also acted in several Hitchcock films. “I’m not that much of a film buff that I knew about Alma, and I had no idea about Hitchcock’s private life,” she said, adding the book aimed “to bring her mother out of the shadows.” By all accounts making the movie about the movies was a joy, with Mirren and Hopkins co-starring in their first film together under first-time director Sacha Gervasi, who fixed a script that had made
the rounds. Hopkins described it as the “most fun” since his Oscarwinning role in the thriller Silence of the Lambs. Mirren recalled rushing off to work each day: “I couldn’t wait.” And it helped that the actors have the same approach. “There’s no mystery to it ... They talk about chemistry, and Helen agrees with me, there’s no such thing. You know your part, she knows hers, and off you go, hope it works,” Hopkins said. But Mirren and Hopkins, who is also being touted for an Oscar nomination, parted ways when speculating on how the auteur director, who never won an Oscar during
five decades of work, would have fared in the Hollywood of today. “He would have despaired,” Hopkins said. “It would have been anathema to him. That kind of artistry is gone.” Corporate control means “you have eight or nine producers on the set, everyone’s got a say in the scripts, and even craft services!” But Mirren differed, imagining “he’d do brilliantly well.” “He was a great salesman, and the Hollywood of today is so much about being a salesman and being able to sell yourself as a brand,” she explained. “He did that brilliantly. I think the two of them sold Hitch. Hitch was the faceman, he was the brand.”
One Direction album Take Rihanna completes 777 tour Me Home tops US charts ONE Direction’s Take Me Home has taken the British boys to the top of the US charts - and to new heights. The London group’s second album has sold 540,000 in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan - the year’s third-highest debut behind Taylor Swift’s Red, which sold 1.2 million units in its first week earlier this month and Mumford And Sons’ Babel, which sold more than 600,000 albums in September in its debut week. “We just want to say a massive thanks to all the fans who have supported us,” band member Harry Styles, 18, said. The album also debuted at number one in the UK this week. The fivesome’s debut, Up All Night, came in at number two last year; it was just released in March in America, where it hit number one and has achieved platinum status.
A LITTLE BIT NERVOUS “We were a little bit nervous about how people were going to take it,” 19-year-old Niall Horan said of the new album during tour rehearsals. “Everyone gets that second album syndrome.” But they say although they are excited, they will not be celebrating too much... We’re finishing rehearsing soon and we’re going home to bed.” One Direction came third on the UK version of The X Factor in 2010, and have found international success this year. They published a book and have a Nickelodeon show and 3D movie planned. They also made the cut for Barbara Walters’ most fascinating people of 2012 list. The group - which includes Harry, Niall, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson - will launch a worldwide tour in February.
The superstar ended her seven-day tour in New York
THE Diamonds hitmaker who has performed seven gigs in seven countries in seven days - ended the gruelling run of shows which marked the release of her latest album Unapologetic at the intimate Webster Hall venue in New York. She tweeted afterwards: “#777Tour is a wrap! Thanks to everyone who was a part of this. It was an incredible experience for my fans and I! #UNAPOLOGETIC is OWT (sic)” Rihanna - who has been accompanied by 150 journalists and fans travelling on her private plane throughout the tour - has incurred fines totalling over £200,000 on the road because of her lateness. Yesterday, the 24-year-old star said: “Guess what, we made it! This has been an experience that I will never ever forget. I barely slept. My sleeping was all done on this plane, I want to thank everyone for making this trip the s**t.”
THE estate of The Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien and publisher Harper Collins have filed an $80 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. studios over the licensing of characters and plots in online and gambling games derived from the films. The lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles this week, alleges that Warner Bros. and its subsidiary New Line Cinema - which own the merchandising rights to the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit brands - infringed on copyrights by licensing to casino slot machines, online gambling, games and downloads. Tolkien’s estate accuses Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., of “infringing conduct.” “Not only does the production of gambling games patently exceed the scope of defendants’ rights, but this infringing conduct has outraged Tolkien’s devoted fan base, causing irreparable harm to Tolkien’s legacy and reputation and the valuable goodwill generated by his works,” the lawsuit stated. The suit claimed Warner Bros. earned millions of dollars from legal merchandise licensing revenue related to The Lord of the Rings trilogy of films, which have grossed nearly $3 billion at the global box office. The estate of the late English author and Harper Collins, a division of News Corp., are asking for at least $80 million in damages. Representatives for Warner Bros., Tolkien’s estate and Harper Collins were not immediately available for comment. The lawsuit comes a week ahead of the New Zealand premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of a new trilogy of films returning to Tolkien’s world of elves, goblins and wizards of Middle Earth, based on the Lord of the Rings prequel novel The Hobbit.

ARIES March 21 - April 20
LEO July 23 - August 22
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21
Giving in to sensual delights may be tempting on a day that may not quite live up to your early expectations, so plan something special for later, just in case. It may help to tone down your feisty attitude, and be sensitive to other people’s feelings. Your practical skills could be helpful for getting ahead. Furthering your position may be a big plus.
It could be an up-beat day for work and health. There may be the possibility of a bonus, or perhaps a positive business announcement. Keep your nose to the grindstone for recognition. Your ideas can gain attention, for it’s time to communicate and speak up for what you want, or perhaps to schedule a meeting. Later, make time to relax.
A sibling, relative or friend may be going through a rough patch, so it will be appreciated if you can lend a sensitive ear. When it comes to money, especially other people’s or the bank’s, it’s best not to let yourself be guided by your emotions. Don’t let the past affect your perception of the present. Spend time reflecting on your priorities.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21
VIRGO August 23 - September 23
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20
Relationships can be taxing when it’s harder to come to agreements. If jealous feelings surface, kindness may be the best antidote. And you may be the recipient of an unexpected financial benefit or a compliment that gives you a boost. Shopping can put a smile on your face, plus an outing with friends this evening could also be delightful.
Romantic encounters may be fraught with stress. It helps to co-operate and compromise for better relationships. It’s possible that certain plans may present a conflict of interest. You may have to sacrifice your wish for those of someone else. Communication is important, so share ideas, write letters, network and generally keep in touch.
Follow your instincts, as you may have the knack of generating good possibilities today. This may be due to winning people over with your personality, and because of this, it might help to pay special attention to how you look. Indeed, Mars may encourage you to rethink your image overall, perhaps even a makeover. Mentally prepare for success.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21
LIBRA September 24 - October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19
Tensions may be apparent on the work front, especially if you and others are under pressure. Venus joins the fray, and may even encourage feelings of cattiness or resentment. Thankfully, your sweet talking abilities may mean you can set things to rights and put everyone in a better frame of mind. Later, an unexpected event may be very welcome.
Keep your wits about you, especially as letting emotions cloud your thinking could be self-defeating. If you can’t give enough attention to a task, it may be best to leave it for another day. Through thought and analysis, you may come to a realisation which helps you plan long-range goals. Talking it through can promote better understanding among friends.
Try not to take things too personally today. A refusal or rejection is not a reflection on you, it’s just the way it is. A friend, though, can be counted on to show a caring approach, no matter what has got you down. It may help to cut yourself and others a little slack. For certain reasons, you may feel a little held back - so keep your perspective.
CANCER June 22 - July 22
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22
PISCES February 20 - March 20
The chances are you’ll go through this day, feeling a bit lazy and self-indulgent. Try to finish tasks early, and then enjoy the company of friends or family. However, try to take care not to be too demanding. If co-operation is the missing element in some of your relationships, might it be because someone wants to dominate a little too much?
It might help to stay on the sidelines today. You may not know what to make of disturbing gossip or local developments, but you can learn a lot by watching and listening. You may surprise others and yourself with a clever idea that enables you to exploit a job skill or hidden talents. If you take the initiative, you may do better than linking with others.
A friend could help shed light on a variety of situations. A positive chat, where you can spell out your position and get questions answered, could resolve a problem. However, you may have to revise your thinking before others are willing to go along with your ideas. Discussions between you and your partner could have long-term implications.

Sport McIlroy believes new clubs won’t change old habits
IN BRIEF England drop three players
World No.1 signs ten-year $250m Nike deal By Tony Jimenez RORY McIlroy has no fears that ditching the Titleist equipment that has taken him to number one in the world will result in any diminishing of his golfing powers. The U.S. PGA champion’s switch to Nike clubs next season, a deal that media reports estimate will be worth $250 million over 10 years, has been the subject of much debate with six-time major winner Nick Faldo among those questioning his decision. Asked by reporters in Dubai this week if he had any concerns the change would jeopardise his confidence or form, McIlroy replied: “No, not at all. “I think all the manufacturers make great equipment nowadays and it’s all very similar - a lot of them get their clubs made at the same factories. I don’t think it will make any difference.” Twice major winner McIlroy will bid a fond farewell to his old clubs at the $8 million DP World Tour Championship that starts today, the end-ofseason showpiece event on
the European Tour. “I’ve started the process of trying a few new things,” said the 23-year-old Northern Irishman. “I’m still playing with my Titleist clubs - this is the last week - but I’ve tinkered about a little bit with the new ones, enough to feel comfortable going into next season.” McIlroy is delighted with the progress he has made this season and European Tour chief executive George O’Grady presented him with a special money clip on Tuesday. “I thought we would take this moment to acknowledge the extraordinary performance of Rory this year, winning our Race To Dubai money-list before coming to the final championship, and winning the money-list in America too,” said O’Grady. “He played brilliantly all year and conducted himself in a manner where anybody would be proud to say, ‘He’s our champion’.” McIlroy said he felt “proud and honoured” to join the long list of greats to have won the European money-list. “I’ve had four goes at it and it was great to be able to do it
this year,” he added. “It’s been a phenomenal year but I’ve still got one tournament left and I want to finish the season strong by picking up two trophies at the end of the week.” McIlroy agreed with many of his fellow players when he said the importance of the DP World Tour Championship had been diluted after he clinched the money-list title nine days ago. McIlroy was undoubtedly influenced by the fact he missed out on overall victory in the FedExCup despite having won two of the four tournaments in this year’s U.S. playoff series. Ultimately he knows he will be remembered for his wins in the ‘big four’ tournaments but he refuses to put on any additional pressure by targeting Jack Nicklaus’ record haul of 18 major victories. “I’ve always said I’m never going to put a number on it. I don’t want to do that, I just want to get my third. “When I get my third then I want to try and get my fourth. A career grand slam is probably the next obvious goal,” he added.
The 23-year-old Northern Irishman is ditching the Titleist clubs that have served him so well
Nadal back on practice court By Iain Rogers
The Spaniard has been out injured since a shock defeat to Lukas Rosol in the Wimbledon second round in June
RAFA Nadal returned to the practice court and started hitting balls again this week for the first time since the latest in a series of knee injuries forced his withdrawal from the U.S. Open at the end of August. The 11-time grand slam singles champion, who has not competed since a shock defeat to Czech Lukas Rosol in the second round at Wimbledon in June, completed a session under the supervision of coach and uncle Toni Nadal on an indoor hard court in his home town of Manacor on the island of Majorca. The 26-year-old Spaniard, the current world number four, hopes to be back to full fitness in time for the Australian Open in January. “I think I am feeling better, the knee is improving the right way and I am happy to be on court another time after a few months outside,” Nadal told reporters. “I am just enjoying the feeling to be playing tennis an-
other time and, well, it will be another period of my recovery,” he added. “I start very slow and I go day by day. I will work hard in my comeback and hopefully the knee will be ready soon. “Always you have to be careful. A few months outside of competition the body has to re-adapt everything on court and all the muscles need to start very slow.” Nadal’s athletic, aggressive playing style places huge demands on his muscles and joints and he has been sidelined several times by knee problems during his 11-year career. His latest injury was diagnosed as a partial tear of the patella tendon and an inflammation of the Hoffa’s fat pad in his left knee. After the shock defeat at Wimbledon he was unable to defend his Olympic title at the London Games. As well as the U.S. Open, which he won in 2010 and where he lost to Novak Djokovic in last year’s final, Nadal missed the season-ending Tour Finals and Spain’s Davis
Cup final defeat to the Czech Republic at the weekend. “Every day is better otherwise I wouldn’t be on the court,” he said. “The images say the evolution has been favourable and that is reason for satisfaction after many months of working and waiting. “It is now another phase where I’m starting little by little and going day by day with patience to find the right moment when all is well and my body will be ready to compete and when my knee is ready.” Nadal’s enforced absence deprived tennis’ ‘big four’ of the seven-time French Open champion, Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray of one of its most competitive and successful members for the second half of the season. Nadal had played some of his best tennis in the first six months of 2012, losing narrowly to Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open and winning a record seventh Roland Garros title on his favoured clay.
ENGLAND have dropped wing Charlie Sharples and loose forwards Thomas Waldron and Tom Johnson from their squad for Saturday’s rugby Test against South Africa at Twickenham. The trio have paid the price for last weekend’s 2014 loss to Australia which meant England slipped to fifth place in the International Rugby Board rankings which will determine the seedings for the 2015 World Cup. Prop Joe Marler will also miss Saturday’s match after straining medial ligaments in his knee in the game against the Wallabies. Back row forwards James Haskell and Ben Morgan have been included in the squad while London Irish centre Jonathan Joseph replaces Sharples. “We have made some changes this week to freshen up the squad before the challenge of South Africa,” coach Stuart Lancaster said in a statement. “Unfortunately that means one or two players missed out who were in the matchday squad against Australia. The changes, however, give opportunities to those who have been pushing hard and we feel will add energy and balance to the team ahead of the significant South African challenge.”
Abul hits debut century BANGLADESH number 10 Abul Hasan scored an unbeaten century on his test debut on Wednesday to complete an astonishing comeback by the home team on the opening day of the second test against West Indies. After fast bowler Fidel Edwards had taken five wickets to help reduce Bangladesh to 193 for eight, Abul and Mahmudullah (72 not out) added 172 runs in an unbroken ninth-wicket partnership. At the close, Bangladesh were a respectable 365 for eight after adding a staggering 179 runs in the final session from only 32 overs. Abul, 20, became the second debutant only in test history to record a century on debut batting at number 10 after Australian Reggie Duff who scored 104 against England at Melbourne in 1902.

Do or die for injury hit AEL in Germany By Nemanja Bjedov
Celtic manager Neil Lennon saw his side fall to a 2-1 defeat at Benfica but the Glasgow giants are still in with a good shot of getting out of the group
Celtic ‘still have good chance’ By Ronnie Esplin NEIL Lennon knows Celtic’s Champions League last-16 hopes are in the balance following their 2-1 Champions League defeat by Benfica at the Stadium of Light. The Scottish champions, guaranteed a Europa League spot after Barcelona beat Spartak 3-0 in Moscow earlier on Tuesday, will go through if, in their home game against the Russian club in a fortnight, they better the Portuguese side’s result in the Camp Nou. “What we have to do is win at home and make Benfica win in the Camp Nou which is no easy feat. “No one gave us a prayer coming into this competition, these players have been exceptional, they have made a name for themselves and we are still in with a good chance of qualifying.” Brown has been battling all
season with a hip complaint, only playing intermittently and usually in the big games, but had to succumb to the pain in the second half when he was replaced by Kris Commons. Lennon said: “Scott Brown has run his course, we may have to book him in for surgery. “We are looking at eight to 10 weeks. “He has been pushing himself to the limit and we can’t keep asking him to put himself through the amount of distress that obviously he was doing towards the end of his time on the pitch. “He has been a huge player for us this season, I think it is time to get the problem addressed and hopefully he will have something to look for-
ward to in the new year.” Ola John gave the home side the lead in the seventh minute before Georgios Samaras levelled in the 32nd minute from a Charlie Mulgrew corner. Defender Ezequiel Garay restored Benfica’s lead in the 72nd minute to ultimately, and deservedly, leave both sides on seven points after five games. Benfica coach Jorge Jesus will take encouragement from Celtic’s win over Barcelona at Parkhead earlier in the month, when he takes his side to Spain. He said: “Now we are playing on the biggest stage in the world against the biggest team in the world. “But we have shown we are more of a team than Celtic and they beat Barcelona so nothing is impossible.”
Barca relieved after rare clean sheet By Iain Rogers
A brace from Lionel Messi took him level in second place on the all-time Champions League scoring list with 56
BARCELONA’S 3-0 Champions League victory at Spartak Moscow on Tuesday not only sent them through to the last 16 as Group G winners but also brought a measure of relief that they had come through a match without conceding. The Spanish club have shipped a surprisingly large number of goals in the first few months of the season, a weakness that will surely need to be corrected if they are to win a third European crown in five years this term. Injuries to stalwarts Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique have played their part but there have also been errors from the normally reliable Javier Mascherano, and goalkeeper Victor Valdes has looked less assured than in recent campaigns. Tuesday’s game was only their sixth clean sheet in 20 matches in all competitions and they have conceded 15 goals in 12 La Liga outings,
already more than half the 29 they let in during the whole of last season. Centre backs Puyol and Pique are both available again and the latter’s commanding presence alongside Mascherano in freezing Moscow on Tuesday brought a solidity to the back line that has been sorely missed. Right back Daniel Alves, also back after injury, turned in one of his best performances of the season after an indifferent start to the campaign and scored Barca’s opening goal with a fine firsttime strike. “It’s been a while since we kept a clean sheet so we are pleased, above all for Victor (Valdes),” Brazil international Alves told reporters. “We have been scoring in both goals and today, fortunately, we did it in the right one,” he added in reference to a number of own goals Barca have let in this season. “We have a style of playing that involves everyone in attack and sometimes you leave yourself open,” he said.
“But we defended the counter attacks well. We are leaving feeling satisfied with the team’s work and we were very good both offensively and defensively.” Rather like tennis’ serial record breaker Roger Federer, Barca striker Lionel Messi cannot seem to finish a match without ticking off another milestone. The Argentine was at it again on Tuesday with two goals against Spartak. His brace took his tally in Europe’s flagship competition to 56, putting him level in second place on the alltime scoring list with former Dutch marksman Ruud van Nistelrooy. Only Spain’s Raul has more with 71. Messi also equalled Raul’s record of scoring in 19 different cities in the Champions League and surpassed the former Real Madrid player’s mark of scoring two goals or more in 14 matches in the competition. Messi moved to within five goals of Gerd Mueller’s calendar-year scoring record of 85, set in 1972.
AEL will be looking for their maiden victory in the Europa League tonight when they travel to Germany to take on Borussia Mönchengladbach. The first match between the two teams in September at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia ended in a goalless draw and that was the only point the Cypriot champions have registered so far during their campaign. AEL are currently rock bottom of Group C with only one point from four matches and now only a victory, followed by three more points from their last matchday encounter with Marseille in the Cypriot capital, can keep the Limassol club’s dream of advancing through the group stage alive - provided that Fenerbahce beat the French side in the group’s other game on the night. The same scenario would also suit the Germans who would then progress with a win over Jorge Costa’s men. The in-form Turkish outfit top the group with 10 points and they need two more from their final two matches in order to secure their spot in the knockout stage of the competition.
‘MANY PROBLEMS’ “We have many problems with injuries ahead of this match,” said AEL coach Jorge Costa. Vice captain Edwin Ouon is suspended, while striker Vouho and midfielder Gilberto will definitely miss out due to injury. Jorge Monteiro, Maykon, Ebo Andoh, Georgios Eleftheriou and Christos Theophilou are also highly doubtful. “It will be a very difficult match for us, especially as we take into consideration that this week we will have two more tough matches,” added Costa whose team will host APOEL this weekend in the national championship and then visit Anorthosis at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca. “However, I am confident and I believe in my players. Despite all the problems we will give everything we have to have a good match and get a positive result,” Costa concluded. Not having many options available to him, it is expected that Costa will pair Dosa Junior and Dede in the centre of defence, while Brazilian winger Edmar should get a chance to operate down either of the flanks. Scottish referee Bobby Madden has been selected to officiate the match, which kicks off at 10.05pm Cyprus time.

Defending champs face Champions League humiliation after Juve defeat
By Karolos Grohmann
(continued from back page) The defeat on Tuesday night leaves the club facing the humiliation of becoming the first Champions League holders to exit at the group stage. Supporters expressed disbelief yesterday that a coach who had delivered the most prestigious club prize to Stamford Bridge in May could be so brutally despatched. One fan, using the name London Blue, wrote on Chelsea’s website minutes after the announcement: “My club is becoming the laughing stock of the football world.” Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand described Chelsea’s decision as “madness”. Celebrity followers of the King’s Road club took to Twitter. Singer Olly Murs said: “How Chelsea FC is run is ridiculous!” Ex-England cricket captain Michael Vaughan tweeted: “Ridiculous decision from Chelsea ... RDM wins the trophy they have been chasing for years and now gets the Boot...” In a statement Chelsea said: “The team’s recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the board felt that a change was necessary.” The Russian oligarch has proved a ruthless hirer and firer of the top managerial talents in football since he bought Chelsea for £140 million in 2003. Only Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, who delivered Premier League titles, have survived more than one season.

start secured him a two-year contract and saw him hailed as “the greatest caretaker manager of all time”. However, this season start-
ed poorly with defeats in the Community Shield and Super Cup finals. The club stands third in the Premier League but lost to West Brom on Saturday. Chelsea said in a statement: “The club faces a difficult task ahead in qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League as well as maintaining a strong challenge for the top of the Premier League while competing in three other cup competitions. “Our aim is to remain as competitive as possible and
challenge strongly on all fronts. The owner and the board would like to thank Roberto for all he has done for the club since taking over in March. Roberto helped guide us to a historic Champions League victory and a seventh FA Cup. We will never forget the huge contribution he has made to this club’s history and he will always be welcome at Stamford Bridge.” Chelsea’s next game is at home to Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday.
Ferguson to continue European experimentation policy By Simon Stone
Phil Jones (right) came through his first full game of the season but the Red Devils lost their 100% European record
SIR Alex Ferguson has vowed to continue with his European experimentation policy next month even though it cost Manchester United their 100 per cent Champions League record in Turkey on Tuesday night. With qualification for the last 16 as group winners already assured, Ferguson left most of his senior players at home for the game with Galatasaray. As a consequence, Burak Yilmaz’s second-half header earned the hosts a 1-0 win that means Galatasaray only have to match CFR Cluj’s result at Old Trafford to accompany the Red Devils into the last 16. However, Ferguson quickly dashed any suggestion Cluj may end up facing a substantially stronger team. “We’ll play a similar team against Cluj, that goes without saying,” said Ferguson.
“We’ve qualified and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t use the squad.” In fact, despite the result, and yet another goal conceded from a set-piece, Ferguson declared himself reasonably satisfied with the outcome. Eighteen year-old Nick Powell grew into the game on his first United start, coming closest for the visitors with a first-half header that struck the crossbar. And Phil Jones came through his first full game of the season after struggling with back and knee complaints. “We worried about setpieces and that was the area we suffered,” said Ferguson. “That was always going to be a problem considering the lack of experience and height. “But otherwise it was a decent performance. Parts of the game were good and we handled the atmosphere.” Ferguson was critical of
early challenges from Felipe Melo and Semih Kaya, both of which he felt warranted red cards. Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo opted to keep his cards in his pocket though, and Galatasaray took advantage, with Hamit Altintop twice coming close in addition to Yilmaz’s fifth goal in the competition. At least though the damage was not as serious as 19 years ago when United were sent crashing out of the competition. The stadium is different as well, even if the incredible noise levels seem to be the same. “It is a fantastic stadium and obviously an improvement from the old one,” said Ferguson. “There is not much difference in the atmosphere. “The biggest change since then is that we have won the competition twice and we have qualified for the last 16 this year too.”
BAYERN Munich advanced to the Champions League knockout stage after their 1-1 draw in Valencia on Tuesday but the Bundesliga leaders will have to wake up and rediscover top form if they are to banish the memories of last season’s collapse. Bayern played for almost an hour with an extra man after Valencia’s Antonio Barragan was sent off in the 33rd minute but trailed 1-0 until Thomas Mueller’s 82nd minute equaliser. The draw was enough to secure a spot in the next round for both teams after BATE Borisov slumped to a 2-0 home defeat to France’s Lille, but Bayern CEO KarlHeinz Rummenigge sought more from the Bavarians. “We have to wake up,” he told players and guests at a post-game banquet in the early hours of yesterday. “We have to rediscover the form that made us so strong this season and that gave us a big, big lead in the Bundesliga.” Bayern, eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with 10 wins from 12 matches, were held to a surprise 1-1 draw by lowly Nuremberg on Saturday. They could have grabbed all three points against the battling Spaniards but for a string of squandered chances, while the woodwork denied Mario Mandzukic a goal late in the game. “This was not a game for which we should celebrate,” Mueller told reporters. “We had an extra player for 60 minutes but were trailing by a goal until the 82nd. It was frustrating not to have won this game. At the end it was just damage control.” Bayern have every reason to sound the alarm bells ahead of a busy week with three league games on the menu. They host Hanover on Saturday before travelling to Freiburg in midweek and then entertain champions Borussia Dortmund in a game that could see their lead cut even further and reignite the title race.

Benitez comes in after Di Matteo sacking By Ben Rumsby and Jonathan Prynn ROMAN Abramovich completed arguably his most controversial day yet at Chelsea after appointing Rafael Benitez to succeed Roberto Di Matteo as manager last night. The Russian handed the former Liverpool boss a contract until the end of the season, having seemingly been unable to woo Pep Guardiola, the man said to be his number one target. Announcing that Benitez was an “interim” rather than permanent appointment, Chelsea said in a statement: “Chelsea Football Club can confirm Rafael Benitez has been appointed interim first-team manager until the end
of the season. “The owner and the board believe that, in Benitez, we have a manager with significant experience at the highest level of football, who can come in and immediately help deliver our objectives. “The 52-year-old Spaniard is due to meet the players at the training ground in Cobham on Thursday. “The two-time UEFA Manager of the Year comes with outstanding pedigree. “He began his managerial career in his homeland, most notably at Valencia where he built a reputation as one of Europe’s top coaches by winning the Spanish League twice and the UEFA Cup. “He then spent six years at Liverpool
and led them to their fifth European Cup and an FA Cup.” Abramovich had earlier sacked the man who led Chelsea to Champions League glory just six months ago. The axing of Di Matteo takes the Russian’s bill for hiring and firing eight managers in nine years to an estimated £90 million. Di Matteo was told about the decision in his office at the club’s training ground in Cobham at 4am by chairman Bruce Buck and chief executive Ron Gourlay. The team had just flown back from a 3-0 defeat in Turin to Italian champions Juventus.

ANCHESTER City went down fighting as their Champions League hopes ended with a battling draw against ten-man Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium. Manager Roberto Mancini was again left to rue a costly decision to deploy a threeman defence as the Spanish giants tore into the hosts in the early stages. Karim Benzema struck and Real should have had more in a devastating spell but City grew in confidence after switching formations and Sergio Aguero levelled from the spot after Alvaro Arbeloa was sent off. City poured forward in search of a winner in the closing stages but it was not to be and the result leaves them with just three points in Group D and unable to progress. Mancini reverted to the controversial 3-5-2 system which proved so troublesome as City slumped to a damaging defeat at Ajax earlier in the competition. He also fielded Edin Dzeko up front in place of Carlos
Arsenal through after beating Montpellier
The dream is over: City’s players are dejected as a draw with mighty Real left them winless in the ‘Group of Death’ Tevez in the hope of exploiting the Bosnian’s aerial presence - not to mention his recent good form - but any illusion of City solidity was soon shattered. Beginning what proved a tortuous period for the home side, Fabio Coentrao first got behind the City defence after seven minutes but Vincent Kompany managed to cut out his cross. Benzema then broke clear but Aleksandar Kolarov managed to get back to prevent him cutting inside and shooting. City failed to heed either of those warnings and were soon punished. Maicon was left well out of
position as Benzema peeled away from him to turn in a curling deep cross from Angel di Maria at close range. City were fortunate things did not get immediately worse as Cristiano Ronaldo - making his first appearance in Manchester since leaving United in 2009 - beat Maicon and Zabaleta to cross but Sami Khedira side-footed across goal. Ronaldo thought he had doubled the lead himself when he raced through and deftly lobbed Joe Hart but Matija Nastasic chased back to hook off the line. The Portuguese got a second opportunity but drilled wide. City finally made their presence in the game known after
21 minutes as Aguero turned to shoot after combining with David Silva but Iker Casillas palmed over. Mancini had clearly seen enough and abandoned his gameplan, moving Zabaleta to the left and switching to a flat back four. Mancini sent Tevez on but Aguero continued to look the main threat and he seemed certain to score as he reached Maicon’s deflected cross, but Casillas produced a brilliant point-blank save. City were almost caught out again by Ronaldo, whose dipping shot troubled Hart but City cleared before he got a second attempt. The hosts dragged them-
selves back level when referee Gianluca Rocchi pointed to the spot after Dzeko played in Aguero from a long Toure ball. Aguero went down after tangling with Arbeloa and what seemed a harsh decision was compounded for Real as the former Liverpool man was shown the red card. Aguero coolly converted to level the scores. City pushed for a winner with Dzeko getting into a good position and Tevez shooting at Casillas. Toure shot well over in injury time as City’s night ended in disappointment and Real’s place in the last 16 was confirmed.
ARSENAL secured qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 2-0 home win over Montpellier. Second-half goals for Jack Wilshere - his first in almost two years - and Lukas Podolski made sure of at least second place in Group B after leaders Schalke beat Olympiacos. The Gunners must now win in Athens in a fortnight to stand any chance of finishing top and so head into the last 16 as one of the seeds. Despite coach Rene Girard accepting their European hopes were all but over in his pre-match press conference, it was a positive start by the French visitors - who were caught up in north London traffic and arrived only an hour ahead of kick off. Arsenal took the lead four minutes into the second half. Captain Thomas Vermaelen floated a deep ball into the penalty area, which was knocked down by former Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud into the path of Wilshere, who lifted the ball over the keeper for his first goal since November 2010. It was 2-0 on 63 minutes. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain carried the ball down the right, before feeding Giroud on the edge of the penalty area. The Frenchman exchanged a neat one-two with Podolski, who ran on to fire a sublime left-foot volley over Geoffrey Jourdren.
