Just days away from a default EAC agrees to loan funds at eleventh hour after heated meeting at House committee By George Psyllides THE ELECTRICITY company (EAC) last night approved a state request for a €100 million loan following a stark warning that without the cash the government would default in the next few days. “If these additional financing needs are not secured we will be talking about a state default in the next few days,” finance ministry permanent secretary Christos Patsalides told the House Finance Committee earlier yesterday. Patsalides said this would also drag semi-government organisations under, since it would put the state into selective default and annul any guarantees given to them. Telecommunications company CyTA had already agreed to lend the state €100 million - through three-month bonds - on condition that the EAC would also chip in. The ports authority has also pledged some €38 million The cash will come from the workers’ pension funds. EAC’s decision was announced last night, following a lengthy meeting of
the fund’s managing committee. Earlier, it was reported that the committee had rejected the request - the reports were immediately denied. “With a high sense of responsibility to the fund and the state, the committee and the EAC board have unanimously decided to respond positively to the state request under certain conditions,” chairman Giorgos Pistendis said. He said the terms have been initially accepted by the government, which was expected to send its reply in writing today. The EAC wanted assurances through a cabinet decision and not just those of the finance ministry. The finance ministry said it needed €420 million in total to cover its shortterm needs. Some €300 million were needed in the coming days. Around €170 million have been secured from other sources, Patsalides told MPs. It is understood that the bulk of that cash came from two foreign banks operating in Cyprus. Patsalides said it was important for a decision to be made in the next 24
hours. The permanent secretary said that one ratings agency had already asked for a telephone conference after the finance committee meeting since they considered that not securing the cash would constitute a credit event – this occurs when an organisation defaults on an important transaction. Reports said the agency was Standard and Poor’s. During the House Finance Committee meeting, Pistendis highlighted the need for state guarantees that the cash would be returned. At this point Attorney-general Petros Clerides angrily pointed out that the EAC had not bothered with guarantees when they handed over their cash to stockbroker Yiannos Andronikou who was later jailed for seven years after he was found guilty of stealing some €8 million from the fund. DISY deputy chairman Averof Neophytou proposed, as an additional guarantee, the state land next to the Hilton hotel. Clerides again intervened, suggesting that this would be a disgrace.

In latest poll, Anastasiades maintains lead and is deemed most honest and popular leader By Stefanos Evripidou MORE THAN half the public believe the government should sign the memorandum with the troika while seven in ten are not happy with President Demetris Christofias’ handling of negotiations with the international lenders, according to a latest poll. State broadcaster CyBC last night revealed the results of the latest poll conducted on
its behalf by CMR Cypronetwork Marketing Research based on a sample of 1,214 people across the island. According to the poll, 54 per cent of those asked believe Cyprus should sign the memorandum with the troika, while 36 per cent believe it should not. Christofias received a very high disapproval rating with 71 per cent declaring they are not satisfied with his handling of negotiations with the troika, compared to
22 per cent who are. The public mood in general appeared to be one of disappointment, with 40 per cent believing no political party has taken the right position on the troika. DISY’s approach to the negotiations received the backing of 22 per cent of respondents, AKEL 15 per cent, EDEK and DIKO 4 per cent each, and 1 per cent each for EVROKO and the Greens. Four fifths of respondents, 78 per cent, said
they would vote in next February’s presidential elections, while 18 per cent plan not to. The vast majority of the electorate, 84 per cent, said concerns regarding the country’s public deficit and public debt will influence their vote. Regarding politicians’ popularity, presidential contender and DISY leader Nicos

DISY still ahead in latest poll Four fifths of the public expect a second round
Just days away from a default (Continued from front page) “Do we want to humiliate our state ourselves?” he said. The attorney-general wondered why foreigners would want to lend money to the state when Cypriots themselves did not trust it. Patsalides said it would be an unprecedented worldwide event for the state to provide additional collateral and guarantees for state bonds. He also sought to allay fears of a possible writedown, similar to what happened with Greece. “It was not done on shortterm state bonds,” he said, adding that the troika want the short-term market to
function. Outside parliament, CyTA workers gathered to protest against their board’s decision to lend cash to the state. The workers, who were kept at a distance from the building, heckled CyTA chairman Stathis Kittis when he arrived for the meeting. In a letter to the finance committee, CyTA unions said this was “unacceptable and illegal” citing various legal points. Daily Politis reported yesterday that CyTA workers had filed lawsuits asking for injunctions that would stop the organisation from lending the state any money.

Divisions surface over pension provisions THERE appears to be a disagreement between the government and international lenders over a provision concerning the calculation of civil service pensions that is set to change as part of the island’s bailout, lawmakers heard yesterday. The sticking point is whether the new system of calculating pensions would be retroactive or if it will cover earnings after the date it comes into force – January 1, 2013. The troika says the former, while a government bill says otherwise. According to the memorandum on which the two sides agreed on principle, “pension benefits will be calculated on a
pro-rata basis taking into account lifetime service as of January 2013.” Attorney-general Petros Clerides, who was present in the negotiations with international lenders, said that his understanding was that pension rights until December 12, 2012 were secure and that the new method would kick in after January 1 of the new year. Under the current system, a civil servant’s pension is calculated on the basis of his last salary. Clerides was adamant that this had been agreed with the troika. “I will go to the president and submit my resignation,” he told the House finance
committee. “I was there the moment it was agreed.” A finance ministry official said an effort will be made to clarify the matter with the troika. Committee chairman Nicolas Papadopoulos asked for the issue to be settled by Thursday when the bill will be put to the vote. Civil service union PASYDY reiterated that certain provisions were unconstitutional. Union boss Glafkos Hadjipetrou said civil servants were prepared to contribute as long as it was lawful, warning that there will be appeals to the Supreme Court.
(Continued from front page) Anastasiades currently tops the table with 46 per cent from the respondents. His potential coalition partner, DIKO leader Marios Garoyian, enjoys the support of 25 per cent while AKEL’s leader Andros Kyprianou also received 25 per cent support. EDEK-backed presidential candidate Giorgos Lillikas pipped both AKEL and DIKO leaders in the popularity stakes, enjoying 35 per cent support, while AKEL-backed presidential candidate Stavros Malas came in third with 32 per cent support. Four fifths of the public expect a second round in next February’s elections. According to the poll, in the first round, 37.1 per cent are ready to vote Anastasiades for president, 23.1 per cent Malas, 20.4 per cent Lillikas, 2.9 per cent Praxoulla Antoniadou, 0.2 per cent Andri Makaria Stylianou, 4.6 per cent will put in a blank vote, 5.9 per cent refused to answer, and 5.1 per cent said they will not vote. In a second round between Anastasiades and Malas, 43.7 per cent will vote Anastasiades and 29.6 per cent Malas, 10.6 per cent will have a blank vote, 9.8 per cent did not answer, and 5.6 per cent won’t vote. A second round between Anastasiades and Lillikas reveals the following results: Anastasiades gets 39.6 per cent, Lillikas 31.6 per cent, 13.2 per cent will leave a blank vote, 8.9 per cent didn’t answer, and 6.5 per cent won’t go to vote. Regarding the level of
commitment within each party, opposition DISY appeared to have mobilised its supporters most successfully with 93.1 per cent of its members ready to vote for Anastasiades, 3.3 per cent for Lillikas, 1.3 per cent Antoniadou, and 0.8 per cent Malas. The historically more disciplined party AKEL is showing signs of weakness with 73.1 per cent saying they’ll vote Malas, 14.6 per cent Lillikas, 4.2 per cent Anastasiades, and 2.3 per cent Antoniadou. DIKO members reflected disarray in their response to the poll with less than half saying they’ll support their party’s preferred candidate Anastasiades (44.7 per cent), while 39.8 per cent preferred Lillikas, 6.5 per cent Malas, and 2.4 per cent Antoniadou. Regarding the three main presidential contenders, 39 per cent saw Anastasiades as the most suitable to handle the Cyprus problem today, compared to 16 per cent for Malas and 14 per cent Lillikas. The DISY leader was also voted the most suitable to handle domestic governance (39 per cent) with 18 per cent saying the same for Malas and 16 per cent Lillikas. In the honesty stakes, 29 per cent saw Anastasiades as honest, compared to 20 per cent for Malas and 14 per cent Lillikas. The DISY leader took all the glory when it came to who had the most leadership qualities, winning over 48 per cent of the sample, compared to 16 per cent for Malas and 12 per cent Lillikas.

Home House prepares to release funds for Cyprus Airways THE House Finance Committee appears ready to release some €16 million earmarked for a share capital increase by troubled national carrier Cyprus Airways (CY), though not without concerns. Chairman Nicolas Papadopoulos said the committee had given its initial approval although certain parliamentary groups have asked to be given until
lunchtime today so that they discuss the matter. If released eventually, the cash will represent the second tranche of some €31 million the airline had requested as it tries to become viable. Last week, CY asked the state for an additional €73 million as part of a restructuring plan to make the company viable.
Papadopoulos said MPs have expressed concern over the new request. He said there was no way the amount would be released without the agreement of the European Union, which has to approve the restructuring plan. Main opposition DISY said his party viewed the matter as another chance for the airline to be rescued despite concerns for the additional cash.

CYPRUS TODAY Jewellery shop break-in nets ¤1m TWO BURGLARS escaped with an estimated €1 million worth of jewellery on Sunday after breaking into a jeweller’s shop in Limassol. According to the 57-year-old owner of the jewellery store, at around 10pm on Sunday, the shop’s alarm system went off so he rushed to the scene along with a security guard from the alarm company. They located the two hooded burglars but were unable to catch them as they sped off in a black Mazda car that did not have licence plate numbers. According to Limassol CID chief, Yiannis Soteriades, the thieves broke into the bookshop next to the jewellery store and used a drill to make a hole in the wall separating the two shops. One of the burglars smashed display cases taking gold and diamond bracelets, diamond rings and necklaces. “The two men were pursued by a police patrol car but were not apprehended,” Soteriades said yesterday. “We will be looking closely at the closed circuit surveillance system.”
¤20,000 taken in pizza robbery A PIZZA restaurant in Strovolos, Nicosia was robbed of €20,000 early yesterday morning after two men threatened the manager at knifepoint. According to the manager of the restaurant, two men wearing masks and carrying knives, entered his office and forced him to open the safe. The men got away with three plastic bags with the weekend’s income after tying up and gagging the manager, police said yesterday.
Two killed in car crashes TWO PEOPLE lost their lives in two separate road accidents early on Sunday. Police said neither victim was wearing a seat belt. Twenty-seven-year-old Iliana Myrianthous from Steni, near Polis was fatally injured after her car flipped over just before 3.00am on Sunday on the road from Polis to Steni. Polis police station are investigating the exact cause of the accident. The second victim, Kyriakos Ioannou, a 24-year-old from Limassol was killed when he was thrown from his car after it hit the surrounding wall of the school in Palodia village in the Limassol district and flipped over. Forestry College closing after more than 60 years By Daphne Vrahimi THE CYPRUS Forestry College which has trained thousands of forestry officials over the past 60 years will close down next year, the ministry of agriculture announced yesterday. Situated in Prodromos, in a central position within the island’s main state forest, the college was ideally located for students training in forestry. The college was also highly beneficial for the village of Prodromos, as part of the students’ education included working on and tending to the forest grounds immediately surrounding the college, with students often being on a 24-hour duty for the upkeep of the area. “The decision to close down
the college has come after a four-year-long study on whether it should continue operating and has not been premature or hasty,” Andreas Christou, the department of forests spokesman said yesterday. He said the growing number of forestry graduates from Greece, who are equally or better qualified than Cyprus Forestry College graduates, had made it increasingly difficult for those from the Prodromos college to find jobs. High running costs were another reason which led to the decision to close the college, he said. The Cyprus Forestry College was established in 1951 and offered diplomas and higher diplomas in forestry. It has been a part of the Leonardo da Vinci programme, the Socrates/Erasmus edu-
Students from many countries have attended the college in Prodromos since it was first opened in 1951 cational exchange network and other European educational programmes. Cyprus Green Party MP Giorgos Perdikis said the number of unemployed forestry graduates, which now stands at 120, played an important part in this decision. “The college was a great help for the village of Prodromos. It is a pity it is closing down, for the village and for students from abroad, from Africa and Asia. They are considered everlasting friends of Cyprus,” he said.
Christou said the college will enrol around six new first year students next year and these will be the college’s final students. He said there would be no redundancies at the college. “College personnel were not only for teaching or training and will therefore continue to work in the Forestry College, which will function in the future as a training centre for forest officials, forest workers and firemen, as well as further training. No one is being let go,” he added.

Older women most common victims of domestic violence A shocking 28 per cent of women say they have been abused
RECOMMENDATIONS A NUMBER of recommendations are made to the authorities, including securing adequate funding to enable the implementation of the national action plans. It recommends the establishment of a national coordinating body to keep a register of all reported cases, and create a comprehensive, central, co-ordinated, regularly updated and easily searchable database on violence against women. The study calls for campaigns to raise awareness on violence against women, focusing on combating sexist attitudes and stereotypes that perpetuate this kind of violence while targeting various groups, such as men, school children (especially boys) and disadvantaged women groups (like non-Greek speaking women). The report proposes the promotion of primary prevention of violence against women through: the educational system, which plays a key role in the socialisation of children and acts as a transmitter of values; and the through co-operation between state agencies and NGOs working in the area of domestic violence against women. It also recommends free anger management programmes for perpetrators of violence against women. And finally, it highlighted the need for further research on the matter, to be repeated at regular intervals so as to follow up the prevalence of the problem and to adjust relevant services accordingly.
By Stefanos Evripidou MORE THAN a quarter of women in Cyprus have suffered some form of domestic violence, according to the first national study carried out on violence in the family. Based on the study’s findings, 28 per cent of Cypriot women have experienced some form of abuse from their husbands/partners, with the highest proportion of abuse (36 per cent) recorded in women in the 45-64 age group. Nearly 60 per cent of female victims of violence do not report the incident to anyone. Researchers from Frederick University compiled the first national report on behalf of the Advisory Committee for the Prevention & Combating of Family Violence, based on 1,107 Greek-speaking women respondents over the age of 18 from urban and rural households across Cyprus.
ALARMING The results, released this month, reveal alarming statistics on the extent, frequency, nature and consequences of domestic violence against women in Cyprus. According to the study, domestic violence against women is defined as “any act of violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty and is inflicted upon women by their husband/ex husband spouse /ex spouse”. The researchers justified their focus on acts of violence against women only by highlighting international research which shows that almost all domestic violence is based on gender power rela-
Nearly 60 per cent of domestic abuse victims do not tell anyone about their ordeals tions and is directed by men against women. They further noted the difficulty in getting a clear picture of domestic violence in Cyprus, mainly due to the absence of a unified central data bank for reported cases of abuse since different services and departments keep their own statistical data on the matter. According to the study’s findings, some forms of violence, such as psychological and social violence appear to be more acceptable for women than physical violence. A minority of women in the sample, 7 per cent, perceive a forced sexual encounter within marriage or within a relationship as acceptable behaviour. At least 28 per cent of women reported some kind of violence. The average percentage of the various kinds of violence inflicted upon women (from rarely to every day) is as follows: economic violence (19.4 per cent); emotional /psychological violence (19.3 per cent); sexual violence (15.5 per cent); social violence (14.8 per cent), and physical violence (13.4 per cent).
District Court of Limassol Probate Jurisdiction
The study found that all types of physical and sexual violence include psychological and emotional abuse. It also noted that the education of either the victim or perpetrator seem to have no relation to domestic violence.
FINANCES However, age, family status, place of residence, financial situation, and management of family income appear to have a correlation with the existence of domestic violence against women. According to the research, violence decreases when the family financial status improves. Also, less violence is recorded when the couple makes decisions on financial issues together. Women of the sample that belong to the age group 4564 reported more violence (36 per cent) followed by age groups 35-44 and 25-34 (28 per cent and 26 per cent respectively). The highest cases of domestic violence were reported in Limassol (40 per cent), while Larnaca had the lowest reported cases (27 per cent).
Only 9 per cent of those injured after violent behaviour against them received medical care. A considerable percentage (57 per cent) of those who reported having been victims of violence did not tell anybody about their abuse. The main reasons for not disclosing the incident are the thought they are to blame for the abuse, their children, fear of the perpetrator’s reaction and the feeling of shame (social stigma). One third of women sampled said they had little or no information on services available for victims of family violence. From those who speak of their abuse to others, only 5 per cent ring the hotline 1440 (Association for the Prevention and Handling of Family Violence) for psychological support and only 2 per cent report the incident to the police. According to the report’s conclusions, “the present findings should alarm relevant services and the community as a whole and should contribute to the adoption of measures that will combat this severe social problem”.

BoC urged to change structure of its board No more bank loans to independent board members By Elias Hazou THE CENTRAL Bank has called on the island’s largest lender to re-jig its board so that no independent director serves for more than nine years, as part of a drive to improve corporate governance. Central Bank sources yesterday said the CB chief’s circular - sent earlier this month - was simply a reminder to the Bank of Cyprus (BoC) to enforce the regulations, but also to get the ball rolling with regard to coming changes to banking governance. Under a regulatory administrative act (as amended in 2009), the board of directors “must explain why it considers a member as being independent...if they have been on the board for more than nine years subsequent to their initial appointment.” Directors are of three types: executive, non-executive and independent nonexecutive. A non-executive director or outside director is a member of the board of directors of a company Nicosia Family Court Divorce Jurisdiction Application No 512/012 Between: STAVROULLA CONSTANTINOU, from Lakatamia,Diodos Okeanou Street No 14,P.OC 2326

The Central Bank sources cited also the memorandum of understanding agreed between Cyprus and its international lenders, whereby authorities here undertook
to pass legislation by the end of June 2013 to “strengthen governance by prohibiting commercial banks from lending to independent board members ... and removing any board members in arrears on existing debts to their banks” Moreover, the memorandum states, “loans and other credit facilities to each board member will be disclosed to the public. status to executive or nonexecutive directors. The CB chief’s circular was sent to the BoC, where it’s understood that a number of independent board directors are nearing the nineyear threshold. It was not sent to Popular Bank, which is currently state-controlled, nor to the co-operatives, not yet under the supervision of the CB. Reports said the matter was set to be discussed during a BoC board meeting yesterday; the bank offered a “no comment” when contacted by the Mail. But reports over the weekend suggested the bank is well aware of it. Unnamed BoC sources told Politis, which broke the story, that there were sinister motives behind the move. They claimed the regulator wants to reshuffle the bank’s leadership to make it more amenable to increasing the stake of Russian businessman Dmitry Rybolovlev, the largest shareholder in the bank. The paper named the six board members that would be affected by the CB’s request. Commenting on this, the same Central Bank sources yesterday told the Mail the “reaction, as seen in the press, has been blown out of all proportion. There is no conspiracy, we are merely asking that the law be applied.” Meanwhile US-based firm Alvarez & Marsal is conducting a probe into the circumstances that led two of the nation’s banks to seek state support.

Mavroyiannis referred to the main achievements of the presidency, including the historic agreement on the unitary patent package with the European Parliament. He also highlighted the importance of the agreement reached in the Council last week on the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM), which will bring the EU a step closer to a banking union, the significant progress achieved in relation to the Common European Asylum System and Schengen governance and the Limassol Declaration on a marine and maritime agenda for growth and jobs was adopted, he said.

Smoking ban has been good for business, study shows By Peter Stevenson THE IMPLEMENTATION of the smoking ban nearly three years ago has had no adverse economic effect on profits in the catering and tourist industries, according to a study by the Technological University of Cyprus (TEPAK). The full details of the research will be announced next week, but preliminary data released yesterday indicate that the smoking ban, imposed in January 2010, has actually had a slight positive influence on turnover. The econometric study used anonymous data gathered from the VAT office provided
by the ministry of finance, to make statistical comparisons before and after the law was passed. Data was taken from active hotels, restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and pubs from the start of 2005 until the end of 2011. Information was also used relating to factors that affect those specific businesses, like tourism, unemployment, growth and inflation. The study, which was carried out in co-operation with the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, the South-Eastern European Research Centre and the Cyprus Tourist Organisation (CTO), also looked at attitudes to the smoking ban within the catering and tourist industries. Six hundred employees and employers from
randomly selected businesses - restaurants, cafes, bars and hotels - from across Cyprus were chosen to take part in the study to show the different attitudes, perceptions and behaviour of owners and employees regarding active and passive smoking, exposure to tobacco smoke and the new anti-smoking laws. Of those chosen, 410 were men and 190 were women, 40 per cent were owners of the businesses, 47 per cent permanent employees, nine per cent seasonal employees and the remaining four per cent, partners. Approximately 35 per cent of the participants were regular smokers, nine per cent casual smokers and 19 per cent former smokers.
Before the anti-smoking law was passed, 52 per cent of businesses allowed smoking anywhere on the premises while only seven per cent had a complete ban. After the law was passed, only 4.5 per cent continued to allow smoking in all areas while the complete ban rose to almost 50 per cent. From the businesses that were checked, only around 10 per cent said they had paid a fine for flouting the law. Almost 80 per cent of participants said they agreed with the law as it protects the employees in the catering and tourist industry. 75 per cent believe it contributes to a cleaner and happier environment and 87 per cent believe it protects non-smokers’ rights.

Orphanides in plea for funds Eleven branches close, staff sent home By Elias Hazou ORPHANIDES Supermarkets’ hopes for a reprieve appeared to have been dashed yesterday after its main creditors reportedly rejected the appointment of an administrator to oversee the company’s restructuring. The news came as the company, in the red for well over €200m, announced it was temporarily shutting down 11 stores across the island amid depleting stocks. Citing sources, the state broadcaster said last night both Popular Bank and Bank of Cyprus turned down the company’s proposal to appoint Andreas Andronikou, of UK auditing firm UHY Hacker Young, as administrator. The banks were however said to be open to a proposal put forth by the chain’s suppliers envisaging a joint buyout of the company and using future dividends to gradually recoup what they are owed by Orphanides.
Earlier in the day, the company pleaded with the banks to quickly approve the appointment of Andronikou to prevent the chain from being wound up. The company’s general manager Constantinos Ioannou urged the banks to act swiftly: “The company is a step before final closure, and we desperately await the banks to make up their minds on whether an administrator will be appointed and if they will back the company,” he told online news portal Stockwatch. Ioannou said 11 stores suspended their operation yesterday, as these had “no products to sell, and so their continued operation is pointless”. One store shut down in Paphos, three in the Limassol district, three more in Larnaca, and four in the Nicosia district. Around 250 employees were sent home on unpaid leave, reports said. Announcing last week that it was going into receivership, the company said it was seek-
ing a new buyer. The largest supermarket chain on the island is indebted to banks to the tune of €140m or €150m; additionally it owes suppliers €85m and €10m to other creditors. It posted a loss of €17.7m for the first three quarters of the year. In trying to convince the banks to back the move, the company argued that it is too big to fail, reports said. The chain was said to be hoping for a small cash injection until such time as it could sell its assets or commercial operations, or both. Lenders, however, remained sceptical. In addition to the hundreds of supermarket employees whose jobs are on the line, a number of suppliers have been left in the lurch; the company’s demise would trigger a chain reaction, impacting merchants and leading to more layoffs. An estimated 1,250 people are on Orphanides’ payroll, while some 2,000 more - such as drivers and packers - work on the supply end.

Britain’s Ofgem approves £24b grid overhaul
EUROPE TODAY Starr, Clifford rebailed in UK TWO high-profile figures arrested by detectives investigating Britain’s Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal have been rebailed until next year, police said. Comedian Freddie Starr and publicist Max Clifford have been rebailed to return on dates in February and March pending further inquiries. Starr, 69, was arrested in Warwickshire on November 1 as part of Operation Yewtree, the investigation into allegations of sex abuse surrounding Savile and others. He had been implicated in the Savile scandal but strongly denied any accusations. PR guru Clifford was arrested on December 6 at his Surrey home on suspicion of sexual offences. He described the allegations as “damaging and totally untrue”.
‘300,000 more households facing fuel poverty’ By Sarah Young and Oleg Vukmanovic BRITISH energy regulator Ofgem yesterday approved £24.4 billion ($39.3 billion) of investment by energy companies to overhaul the country’s gas and electricity grid, reducing initial overall spending plans by 16 per cent up to 2021. Ofgem is responsible for delivering the most cost-effective investments possible as part of plans to modernise Britain’s ageing energy networks between 2013-2021. Energy companies initially proposed spending £45.4 billion on upgrading and maintaining the country’s energy networks until 2021, which would be clawed back through higher energy bills. Ofgem’s latest proposal, which aims to curb energy spending plans in order to reduce the impact on utility bills, reduces that figure by 16 per cent to £38.2 billion. Even these scaled-back proposals are expected to add
£15.1 a year to consumer bills by 2021, Ofgem said. Within the £38.2 billion, £24.4 billion will go towards modernising the energy grid, up £2 billion compared with initial proposals made in July following a row over the budget. Initial proposals made by the regulator were slammed for being too low by the country’s biggest energy distributor, National Grid, in July. The company said in a separate statement yesterday that it would take time to review the updated proposals before deciding on its response. National Grid is most directly affected by Ofgem’s proposals since it makes 60 per cent of its operating profit from electricity and gas transmission, Seymour Pierce utilities analyst Angelos Anastasiou said in a note. “(Ofgem’s) proposals are long and complicated but, at first glance, they seem to be pretty similar to the initial proposals (IP) that were issued in July,” Anastasiou said. “A dividend cut and/or fundraising remains a possibility,
but the market does not appear to be currently factoring this in,” he said, referring to National Grid, which has 75 days to accept or reject Ofgem’s proposals. Fast-rising consumer energy bills have caused anger in UK households squeezed by spiralling price rises and muted wage growth. A government advisory group said yesterday a further 300,000 households risked ‘fuel poverty’ this winter. “This provides a framework of strong incentives and penalties to stimulate the innovative and efficient operations of Britain’s energy companies,” Ofgem’s chairman John Mogg said in a statement. The regulator said its final plans earmarked up to £15.5 billion to upgrade transmission networks for both gas and electricity, assets operated by National Grid. Of the total investment approved by Ofgem, £4.5 billion will be held back unless energy companies can justify the expenditure over the 2013-2021 investment period, it said.

Ponta re-appointed French right set new leadership vote ROMANIAN President Traian Basescu re-appointed leftist Victor Ponta as prime minister yesterday, having said he would never do so again, giving his arch rival a mandate to complete a new deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The move follows Ponta’s Social Liberal Union (USL) winning a two-thirds majority in a December 9 parliamentary election and eases concerns over Romania’s political stability. But the two men dislike working together and the partnership may not last. The European Union criticised Ponta, a 40-year-old lawyer, for undermining the rule of law in a failed attempt to impeach Basescu in July. The dispute delayed policymaking in the EU’s second-poorest state and sent its currency to a record low. That stoked speculation that the rightist Basescu, a blunt former sea captain known for his outspoken and combative nature, might nominate someone else from the USL to try to split the alliance of leftists, liberals and conservatives. The row raised doubts about how quickly Romania could seal an IMF deal to replace a 5-billion-euro ($6.6billion) agreement that expires early next year and Ponta will have to balance that with easing austerity and reviving a recession-hit economy. Ponta told reporters yesterday that he expected his government to win parliamentary approval on Friday, after which he would focus on IMF talks and passing a budget for 2013. “We have entered a period of normality, which is strange - we have not had this for so many years,” he said.

FRENCH conservatives whose main party has been locked in a leadership struggle for weeks after losing the last national election to the Socialists agreed yesterday to hold a new vote in September. The deal raised the prospect of a return to business as usual for the UMP, distracted from its role as the leading opposition party since JeanFrancois Cope and former prime minister Francois Fillon both claimed to have won a leadership vote six weeks ago to replace ousted former president Nicolas Sarkozy. Cope, a lawyer, ex budget minister and apparent winner of the contested November 18 vote, said a compromise was being fine tuned to schedule a new election in September, bringing forward a vote by six months from the date he originally had proposed. Supporters of Fillon, his main opponent, hailed the agreement but called for guar-
Cope acknowledged the fallout as a ‘tragi-comedy’ antees to avoid any repeat of voting irregularities which tarnished the first election. “I hope we’ll reach a deal today with Francois Fillon on the main points,” Cope said on French television. The deal fended off the prospect of a breakup following weeks of vicious public exchanges, an internal
split formalised by the formation of a new centre-right in parliament run by Fillon, and a failed mediation effort by Sarkozy. Fillon, a moderate who became one of France’s bestliked politicians after five years under Sarkozy, plummeted to an approval rating of 33 per cent, according to a December 9 survey by pollster Opinionway. Cope, with support of just 17 per cent in the poll, acknowledged the fallout from what he called a “tragi-comedy”. “Obviously we’ve suffered in the polls, but what causes me the most regret is the image of the party that we have transmitted to our supporters,” he said. The party nevertheless has made advances at the ballot box, winning three byelections on Sunday - a result suggesting internal problems weighed less for voters than Socialist President Francois Hollande’s job performance.
THE wreck of a Soviet submarine lost during World War Two has been found in the Baltic Sea, 71 years after it sank, the Swedish Military said yesterday. The Swedish Armed Forces said the submarine, believed to have been lost on patrol in late 1941, was found in the Swedish economic zone southeast of the Baltic island of Oland in an area which German forces had mined during the war. “There is much to indicate that the submarine headed straight into the minefield while on the surface and was blown apart by a mine,” the military stated.
‘Heart-stealer’ fined €500 THE young Moroccan woman at the centre of Silvio Berlusconi’s sexfor-hire scandal has been fined for failing to appear as a witness twice at the former premier’s trial. Karima el-Mahroug, also known as Ruby the Heart Stealer, was the last witness to be called in the trial that accuses Berlusconi of having paid for sex with her when she was 17, and then trying to cover it up. The court fined el-Mahroug, who is in Mexico on holiday, 500 euros (£405).
Assault on Greek leftist lawmaker draws outrage GREECE’S government yesterday condemned an attack against a leftist lawmaker which has raised fears that far-right violence in the crisis-hit nation is spiralling out of control as “unacceptable”. Dimitris Stratoulis, an MP from the leftist Syriza party, said three men in their 30s had kicked and punched him in the head during half-time at a football game on Sunday evening. The men had identified themselves as members of the far-right Golden Dawn party and had told him “We are going to
kill you now”, he said. The party denied involvement in the attack. Syriza, the anti-bailout party which is leading in polls, demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators, saying tolerating Golden Dawn would lead to the loss of lives. Lawmakers from across the political spectrum spoke out against the attack. “We harshly condemn the attack,” Simos Kedikoglou, a Greek government spokesman, stated. “Any kind of attack and threat is unacceptable in our democracy. Violence has no place in our culture.”
Golden Dawn, which has been linked to violent assaults against immigrants, has surged in popularity as Greece’s economic crisis has deepened. It emerged from obscurity to enter parliament this year for the first time. “Golden Dawn has nothing to do with the attack against the Syriza MP,” the party, which would be the third-largest in Greece if elections were held now, said in a statement. “The left-wing politicians who foment violence ... should stop using the name of Golden Dawn.”

Protests called after Egypt vote
Free Syrian Army ďŹ ghters sit with their weapons in Daraya near Damascus on December 16, 2012
EGYPT’S opposition called for nationwide protests against a constitution backed by President Mohamed Mursi, after a vote exposed deep divisions that could undermine his efforts to build consensus for tough economic measures. The Islamist leader won a 57 per cent “yesâ€? vote for the constitution in a ďŹ rst round of a referendum at the weekend, according to state media, a margin that was less than his party had hoped for and which is likely to embolden the opposition. The second round, due to be held on Saturday, is expected to give another “yesâ€? as voting will be in districts seen as even more sympathetic towards Islamists, which would mean the constitution should be approved. The opposition National Salvation Front urged the organisers of the referendum to investigate what it said were widespread voting violations and ensure that the second
Mursi won a 57 per cent ‘yes’ vote for the constitution round of balloting was properly supervised. It called for protests across Egypt today “to stop forgery and bring down the invalid draft constitutionâ€? and urged organisers to consider re-running the ďŹ rst round of voting. Senior opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei, a Nobel prize winner, used his Twitter account to call for “cancelling the notorious referendum and entering di-
alogue to mend the riftâ€?. The closeness of the ďŹ rstround tally and the low turnout give Mursi scant comfort as he seeks to assemble support for difďŹ cult economic reforms to reduce the budget deďŹ cit. One newspaper calculated that in the ďŹ rst round, out of every 100 Egyptians, 18 voted “yesâ€?, 13 voted “noâ€? and the rest did not participate, buttressing opposition claims that Mursi had failed to secure real backing. Simon Kitchen, a strategist at Egyptian investment bank EFG-Hermes, said much would depend on whether Mursi took the result as “an endorsement of his policies ... or does he recognise that he may need to spend more time building consensus ahead of major policy changes?â€? “I think he will continue to push ahead on reforming taxes and subsidies because, at this stage, Egypt has little choice but to make such reforms,â€? he said.
1,500 more settler homes planned for East Jerusalem
Syria VP: neither side can triumph
ISRAEL approved plans to build 1,500 more Jewish settler homes in east Jerusalem yesterday, an ofďŹ cial said, days after provoking international protests against a project for another 3,000 such homes on land it captured in the 1967 Six-Day War. Palestinians see the settlements as obstacles to achieving independent statehood. The settlements have been condemned by many countries, and the latest project is slated to be built on a portion of West Bank land Israel annexed as part of Jerusalem, in a move never recognised internationally. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged last week to build at least 3,000 more settler homes on West Bank land as an expression of Israel’s objections to a United Nations vote last month recognising Palestinian statehood.
Intra-Palestinian battles rage in Damascus By Mariam Karouny and Dominic Evans SYRIAN Vice President Farouq al-Sharaa said neither the forces of President Bashar al-Assad nor rebels seeking to overthrow him can win the war which is now being fought on the outskirts of Assad’s powerbase in Damascus. Sharaa, a Sunni Muslim in a power structure dominated by Assad’s Alawite minority, has rarely been seen since the Syrian revolt erupted in March 2011 and is not part of the president’s elite directing the ďŹ ght against Sunni rebels. But he is the most prominent ďŹ gure to say in public that Assad will not win. He was speaking to Lebanon’s alAkhbar paper in an interview from Damascus, which is now hemmed in by rebel ďŹ ghters to the south. Assad’s forces have used jets and artillery to try to dislodge the ďŹ ghters from around Damascus but the violence has crept into the heart of the capital and activists said rebels overran three army stations in a new offensive in the central province of Hama yesterday. Sharaa said the situation in Syria, where more than 40,000
people have been killed, was deteriorating and a “historic settlementâ€? was needed to end the conict, involving regional powers and the UN Security Council and the formation of a national unity government “with broad powersâ€?.
‘SOLUTIONS DISTANT’ “With every passing day the political and military solutions are becoming more distant. We should be in a position defending the existence of Syria. We are not in a battle for an individual or a regime,â€? Sharaa was quoted as saying. “The opposition cannot decisively settle the battle and what the security forces and army units are doing will not achieve a decisive settlement,â€? he told the paper, adding the insurgents ďŹ ghting to topple Syria’s leadership could plunge it into “anarchy and an unending spiral of violenceâ€?. Sources close to the Syrian government say Sharaa had pushed for dialogue with the opposition and objected to the military response to an uprising that began peacefully. In Damascus, clashes raged between Palestinian factions loyal to and opposed to Assad in the Yarmouk district
a day after Syrian ďŹ ghter jets bombed a mosque there, killing at least 25 people. Activists said troops and tanks were gathered outside the camp yesterday and hundreds of Palestinians refugees living in Syria ooded into Lebanon. Syria hosts half a million Palestinian refugees, most living in Yarmouk and descendants of those admitted after the creation of Israel in 1948, and has always cast itself as a champion of the Palestinian struggle, sponsoring several guerrilla factions. Both Assad’s government and the mainly Sunni Muslim Syrian rebels have enlisted and armed divided Palestinian factions as the uprising has developed into a civil war. In a veiled criticism of the crackdown, Sharaa said there was a difference between the state’s duty to provide security to its citizens, and “pursuing a security solution to the crisisâ€?. He said even Assad could not be certain where events in Syria were leading, but that anyone who met him would hear that “this is a long struggle...and he does not hide his desire to settle matters militarily to reach a ďŹ nal solutionâ€?.

NATO dismisses Iran accusations over missiles for Turkey NATO’s secretary-general yesterday rejected charges by Iran’s armed forces chief that the Western alliance was risking a world war with plans to put Patriot anti-missile systems near Turkey’s border with Syria, saying the move was purely defensive. NATO agreed this month to send Patriot missiles to Turkey to protect its ally against possible attack from neighbouring Syria, where a 21-month-old civil war is raging. Turkey has harboured some Syrian rebels and refugees, and there have been
episodes of gunďŹ re from Syria hitting Turkish territory. “I completely denounce these (Iranian) allegations. We have made clear right from the outset that the deployment of Patriots is a purely defensive measure,â€? NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told a news conference after talks with Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo. General Hassan Firouzabadi, Iran’s army chief of staff, was quoted on Saturday as calling for NATO not to deploy the Patriots in Turkey, which also borders Iran.

WORLD TODAY Pakistan blast kills at least 15 A BLAST in a market in northwest Pakistan yesterday killed at least 15 people, a security official reported. The official said at least 20 people had been wounded in the blast in the market in the Khyber region, near the border with Afghanistan, and the death toll could rise. Pakistani television news channels broadcast pictures of wrecked cars and pick-up trucks damaged in the blast, which took place near rows of shops. The attack occurred near the office of a senior government official but it was unclear if he was the target of the attack, the news channels reported. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but militants fighting the Pakistani state have launched numerous attacks in ethnic Pashtun areas along the Afghan border.
China arrests CHINESE authorities have detained 93 people accused of spreading doomsday rumours and arrested a man who slashed 23 children at a school after he was “psychologically affected” by such predictions, the Xinhua state news agency reported yesterday. The 93 people, from seven provinces, include members of the banned “Almighty God” cult, Xinhua said, adding they were detained for “handing out leaflets about the apocalypse and spreading rumours”. “These cult members recently latched on to the Mayan doomsday scenario to predict the sun will not shine and electricity will not work for three days beginning on December 21,” Xinhua reported.
Killer elephant SOLDIERS in Nepal are on the hunt for a wild elephant after it strayed into villages in the southern part of the Himalayan nation and killed four people in three months, officials said yesterday. The elephant reportedly entered a thatched house in Gardi village, 82 km south of Kathmandu on Saturday, pulled an elderly couple from bed and trampled them to death.
Kim Jong-Un (C) bows in a ceremony marking the first anniversary of the death of Kim Jong-Il in this video grab
THE embalmed body of former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, still in his trademark khaki jump-suit, has been put on display on the anniversary of his death. Kim lies in state a few floors below his father, national founder Kim Il Sung, in the Kumsusan mausoleum, the cavernous former presidential palace in Pyongyang. Kim Jong Il was presented lying beneath a red blanket, a spotlight shining on his face in a room suffused in red. Wails echoed through the hall as a group of North Korean women sobbed into the sashes of their traditional dresses as they bowed before his body. The hall bearing the glass coffin was opened to select visitors for the first time since his death. North Korea also unveiled Kim’s yacht and his armoured train carriage, where he is said to have died. Among the personal belongings featured in the mausoleum are the parka,
sunglasses and pointy platform shoes he famously wore in the last decades of his life. A laptop computer lay open on his desk. North Koreans paid homage to Kim and basked in the success of last week’s launch of a long-range rocket that sent a satellite named after him to space. The launch, condemned in many other capitals as a violation of bans against developing its missile technology, was portrayed not only as a gift to Kim Jong Il but also as proof that his young son, Kim Jong Un, has the strength and vision to lead the country. The elder Kim died last December 17 from a heart attack while travelling on his train. His death was famously followed by scenes of North Koreans dramatically wailing in the streets of Pyongyang, and of the 20-something son leading ranks of uniformed and grey-haired officials through funeral and mourning rites.

Thousands seek cover as cyclone sweeps Fiji
Also vows to resolve row with China over islands
MORE than 3,500 people evacuated to emergency shelters in Fiji as the biggest cyclone in 20 years swept across the Pacific island nation yesterday, three days after the storm killed four people and destroyed thousands of homes in nearby Samoa. Tourist resorts on many of Fiji’s palm-fringed islands have been evacuated and authorities warned people to remain in shelter as Tropical Cyclone Evan battered the country, blowing over trees and destroying houses. Authorities said Cyclone Evan had generated destructive winds, torrential rains and was likely to lead to flooding due to a storm surge as it passes to the northwestern side of the main Fiji islands of Vanua Levu and Viti Levu, with wind gusts up to 270 kmh (170 mph). Fiji’s weather bureau said cyclone Evan was rated a category four storm, the second highest level, and was moving only at about 18 kph (11 mph), meaning the destructive winds could last several hours. Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama ordered public servants to stay at home and he put emergency services on standby. Hospitals and health centres have been closed for all but emergency patients. Power supplies have also been cut to some areas as a precaution against falling power lines, including in the main tourist town of Nadi. Airlines grounded flights to and from Fiji, stranding about 1,900 visitors in the country. “I cannot stress enough how serious this is. Every Fijian will be affected but we must take preventative steps now,” Bainimarama said.
Former Japanese premier Abe surged back to power in a Sunday election
By Leika Kihara and Kaori Kaneko JAPAN’S next prime minister, Shinzo Abe, buoyed by a landslide election victory, piled pressure on the central bank yesterday as it prepared for a policy meeting, saying voters had overwhelmingly backed his call for aggressive monetary stimulus. Abe said once he formed his cabinet on December 26, he would instruct ministers to produce a joint statement with the Bank of Japan (BOJ) that will give it a 2 per cent inflation target, double the current goal. The ex-premier, who won a second chance to lead the nation when his conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) surged back to power in a Sunday election, also vowed to improve what he called strategic relations with China while standing firm on the sovereignty of islands controlled by Japan but claimed by China. Abe campaigned with a call for “unlimited” monetary easing by the BoJ and promising a surge in public spending to snap the world’s third-biggest econ-
omy out of its fourth recession since 2000, and persistent low-grade deflation. “It was very rare for monetary policy to be the focus of attention in an election, but there was strong public support to our view,” Abe, wearing a black suit and a pink tie, told his first postelection news conference. “I hope the Bank of Japan takes this into account
(at its policy meeting this week).” The NHK public broadcaster said the LDP had won 294 seats in the 480member lower house. Its ally, the New Komeito party, won 31 seats, giving the two the two-thirds majority needed to over-rule most matters in the upper house, where no party has a majority. Turnout was a
post-war low of just above 59 per cent, according to media estimates. Security policy and strained relations with Japan’s neighbours were also key themes of Abe’s campaign and the conservative leader reiterated there was no doubt that uninhabited East China Sea islands were Japanese. He vowed to work “persistently” to improve relations with China through dialogue, calling for a strategic approach, putting ties with China in the context of Japan’s relations with the United States and the Asia-Pacific region. “We need to deepen ties with the rest of Asia including India and Australia, and not only diplomatically, but in the fields of security and energy, before starting to work on improving ties with China,” Abe said. While Abe is expected to make his first trip to Washington early next year, the immediate focus is on his promises of big-scale monetary and budget stimulus, dubbed “Abenomics”. The first instalment is due this week, with the BoJ seen boosting its assetbuying programme at the end of its two-day meeting on Thursday. That would mark its fifth policy easing since it adopted a 1 per cent inflation target in February and vowed to step up efforts to end deflation and shield the export-dependent economy from the impact of a strong yen and the global economic slowdown. But Abe has been saying it was not enough, calling for more vigorous steps.
10 Afghan girls killed in blast while out collecting firewood A BLAST killed 10 Afghan girls as they were collecting firewood in eastern Afghanistan yesterday, government officials said. It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion in the farming village of Dawlatzai in volatile Nangarhar province. It could have been by a bomb planted by the Taliban, a landmine, or other unexploded ordnance left over from decades of conflict.
“The girls were collecting firewood and they were digging the ground with axes when the blast happened,” district governor Mohammad Sediq Dawlatzai said. Relatives and villagers carried the bodies of the girls - aged between nine and 11 - from the site of the blast on simple wooden beds on their shoulders. They were covered in thick bedspreads. Hundreds of mourners prayed near their corpses, spread out on the dirt
floor out before burial. “I was having breakfast when I heard a bang. I came out of my house to see what had happened,” villager Jan Mohammad told Reuters. “Nearby children asked me to bring some bedspreads, then I got back home and took my car. Later I carried three of the wounded children to the public health centre.” Women and children are often the victims of fighting in Afghanistan.

World Mourners embrace as they leave the Honan Funeral Home, where the family of six-year-old Jack Pinto held his funeral service, in Newtown, Connecticut yesterday

US schools confront loss as funerals begin By Peter Rudegeair and Chris Kaufman MOURNERS in Newtown, Connecticut, headed for the first two of 20 funerals of schoolchildren massacred in their classroom as the rest of the US anxiously sent children back to school yesterday with tightened security. Within hours of the school day starting, lockdowns were declared in nearby Connecticut and New York towns. In New Jersey, one high school’s morning announcements included an added warning not to let strangers into the building. Newtown’s schools remained closed on Monday, the first academic day since the 20year-old gunman claimed 28 lives, including his mother’s and his own. Tiny caskets marked the first wave of funerals for the 20 children and six adults killed in the shooting ram-
Tiny caskets mark first wave of Newtown victims’ funerals page at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday. Noah Pozner and Jack Pinto, both six years old, were to be laid to rest yesterday afternoon. Their funerals come a day after President Barack Obama visited Newtown to comfort the families. Obama’s remarks were heralded yesterday morning by relatives of teacher Victoria Soto, 27, who was killed as she tried to protect her first-grade students. “He really made us feel like she really was a hero and that everyone should know it,” her brother, Carlos Soto, told CBS This Morning.” All the dead children were six or seven years old. The school principal of Sandy Hook Elementary, the school psychologist and four teach-
ers were also gunned down. Noah was the youngest victim of the rampage and his twin sister, Arielle, escaped unhurt. The family’s rabbi has said he encouraged Noah’s mother to focus on her other four children amid the grief. Jack was a wrestler who loved sports. The New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz played Sunday’s football game with the boy’s name written all over his cleats and gloves. At Sunday night’s memorial, Obama offered words of hope and promises of action to stop future tragedies. “We bear responsibility for every child ... This is our first task, caring for our children. It’s our first job. If we don’t get that right, we don’t get anything right,” he said.
Venezuela win a ‘gift’ for absent Chavez HUGO Chavez’s supporters dedicated their dominant regional election win to the absent Venezuelan president and turned attention back yesterday to his fight to recover from cancer surgery in Cuba. Helped by sympathy for Chavez, the ruling Socialist Party swept the board in Sunday’s vote, winning 20 out of 23 state governorships in the South American OPEC nation. “That was the people’s present for their commander, painting the country red,” said the party’s national election co-ordinator Jorge Rodriguez. Government candidates slashed the opposition’s control of seven states to just three but some good news for the opposition came from Miranda, where its standard-bearer, Henrique Capriles, held on to his seat. That left Capriles, a 40-year-old career politician and lawyer by training, as the opposition’s clear candidate-in-waiting should Chavez have to step down and a new election be called. Venezuela’s highly traded global bonds predictably slipped in price yesterday, given investors’ aversion to any good news for Chavez and hopes for a more market-friendly government.
In early trade yesterday, Venezuela’s sovereign debt was off 2 .2 per cent a ccording to JP Morgan’s tracker, while the benchmark 2027 bond was down 2.4 per cent. Though celebrating his Miranda win, Capriles acknowledged the overall national results were bad for the opposition. He accused the government of abusing state resources and exploiting emotions over Chavez’s health during the campaign. “We Venezuelans pray for the president’s health, but he is in Cuba and Venezuela’s problems need answers,” Capriles added, criticising high crime and jobless rates. In office since 1999, Chavez is due to start a new term on January 10 after beating Capriles at October’s presidential vote. But he has named a successor, Vice President Nicolas Maduro, in case he is incapacitated, a scenario that would trigger a new poll within 30 days in the nation of 29 million people. Though past surveys have shown Capriles to be more popular than any other senior officials, Chavez’s personal blessing for Maduro could transform the situation by firing up supporters who would view him as a proxy for their leader.
The president kept his emotions in tighter check than he did on Friday, when he cried openly while addressing the shooting. But tears ran freely among mourners in the packed high school auditorium, who wailed when he read the names of the adults and children killed. Schools remained closed in Newtown as faculty members met to decide when they would open again. To keep children occupied on a drizzling Monday, youth sports groups set up an indoor field day with athletics, board games and arts and crafts. By early morning, more than 100 children joined in the activities.
Obama vows effort to tame gun violence U.S. President Barack Obama on Sunday demanded changes in the way the country dealt with gun violence, though he avoided the use of the word “gun” itself in consoling the Connecticut town shattered by the massacre of 20 young schoolchildren. Obama said the world would judge the nation by the way it cared for its children, and that Friday’s slaughter left that judgment wanting. “Can we say that we’re truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose? “I’ve been reflecting on this in the last few days. And if we’re honest with ourselves the answer’s no,” Obama told a packed auditorium at Newtown High School at the end of a sombre multi-faith service. “We’re not doing enough and we will have to change.” The emotional prayer vigil capped a day when worshippers sought solace in churches to mourn the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, where a gunman used a military-style assault rifle to kill six adults and 20 first-graders before
committing suicide. Police said Adam Lanza was armed with hundreds of bullets in high-capacity magazines of about 30 rounds each for the Bushmaster AR 15 rifle and two handguns he carried into the school. He had a fourth weapon, a shotgun, in his car outside. Obama noted it was the fourth time in his presidency he had needed to console a community after such an attack, following the shootings in Tucson, Arizona in January, 2011; Aurora, Colorado in July; and Oak Creek, Wisconsin in August. “Here in Newtown, I come to offer the love and prayers of the nation,” Obama said. “I am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depths of your sorrow, nor can they heal your wounded hearts.” Obama somberly spoke the first names of the 20 children as people wailed in grief, adding that he would convene a meeting of law enforcers, parents, educators and others in an effort to prevent future tragedies. But he did not specifically call for tougher gun laws, mindful of the heated debate ahead on the issue.
Obama pauses as he speaks during a memorial service for the Sandy Hook Elementary School victims on Sunday

Business ‘New ECB powers to restore confidence’
Shares, dollar up on ‘fiscal cliff’ optimism, Japan vote
NEW European Central Bank powers to oversee eurozone banks will help restore confidence in the sector and revive interbank lending, its president, Mario Draghi, said yesterday. European ministers clinched a deal last week to give the ECB powers to supervise the currency bloc’s banks from March 2014, taking the first step in a new phase of integration to help underpin the euro. “The single supervisory mechanism will contribute to restoring confidence in the banking sector across the euro area. It will help revive interbank lending and crossborder credit flows, with tangible effects for the real economy,” Mario Draghi told the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee. Bank-to-bank lending has yet to recover from the onset of the global financial crisis in 2007, and many banks rely on the ECB for their liquidity needs while others hoard their cash rather than lend it on. Although the ECB will only have automatic oversight of around 150 of the bloc’s 6,000-odd banks, it will have the authority to intervene in smaller banks if there are signs of trouble. Germany fought hard to constrain the ECB’s scope so that it would not cover its savings banks. Draghi said: “The national supervisors’ role gets bigger as the banks get smaller, but all national supervisors will be subject to the single rulebook as regulated from the centre. The ECB will retain power to call in any bank under its domain.” Once ECB supervision is in place, the eurozone’s rescue fund - the European Stability Mechanism - will be allowed in principle to recapitalise banks directly.

GLOBAL shares advanced yesterday, bolstered by signs of tentative progress over the weekend on negotiations over the US “fiscal cliff,” while a win by Japan’s conservative Liberal Democratic Party lifted the dollar to a 20month high against the yen. The biggest moves of the day came in the currency market following a landslide election victory for Japan’s LDP on Sunday, which opened the way for a shift in economic strategy to lift the world’s third-largest economy out of recession. The triumph was seen as piling pressure on the Bank of Japan to ease further at its next policy meeting, which ends on Thursday, setting the stage for an even bigger fall in the yen. Republican House Speaker John Boehner signalled willingness to move closer to President Barack Obama’s demands as they try to avoid the automatic tax hikes and spending cuts that would take place in the new year if no deal were reached. “We have a nice little move here (in the market) following the conversations between the GOP and the White House on getting a deal done,” said Frank Davis, director of sales and trading at LEK Securities in New York.
A trader on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange begins work yesterday Uncertainty over if and when a federal budget deal will be done has kept investors cautious in what is already a normally quiet trading period heading into year-end. Investors are worried the economy could slide back into recession if the full brunt of the tax and spending changes is allowed, though most expect a deal will eventually be reached. In US stock trading, nine of the S&P 500’s 10 sectors were higher, led by financials, as the S&P Financial Index gained 1.6 per cent. Shares of Bank of America rose 2.7 per
cent to $10.87 and Citigroup gained 2.6 per cent to $38.57. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 79.10 points, or 0.60 per cent, at 13,214.11. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index was up 12.62 points, or 0.89 per cent, at 1,426.20. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 28.84 points, or 0.97 per cent, at 3,000.18. The MSCI world equity index rose 0.5 per cent to 337.93 following a 0.5 per cent decline in Asia share markets outside Japan. The major debt markets, however, did take some en-

couragement from the Boehner proposal on taxes, with the benchmark 10-year US Treasury note down 10/32, the yield at 1.737 per cent. If the S&P 500 sustains its gains through the session, the index would snap a twoday losing streak. Despite the uncertainty of fiscal cliff talks, the S&P has performed well in the last month, grinding higher on mostly light volume. Apple Inc shares slipped again yesterday. They were down 0.9 per cent to $505.12 after two firms cut their price targets on the stock.
The tech giant said it sold more than 2 million of its new iPhone 5 smartphones in China during the three days after its launch there on Friday, but the figures did not ease worries about stiffer competition. The dollar was last up 0.3 per cent on the day at 83.75 yen, having earlier hit 84.48 yen, its strongest since April 2011. The euro jumped to around 111.30 yen, its highest since late March. It eased back as some funds liquidated long euro positions, leaving it last up 0.3 per cent at 110.25 yen.

THE US credit union regulator sued JPMorgan Securities and Bear Stearns & Co yesterday over alleged misconduct in the sale of $3.6 billion in mortgage securities to credit unions that collapsed because of losses from the securities. The lawsuit by the National Credit Union Administration is its second against JPMorgan involving losses to credit unions. In June 2011 the agency sued it over securities in which JPMorgan was the underwriter and seller. That suit is still pending. Bear Stearns, which JPMorgan acquired in 2008, made misrepresentations in connection with the underwriting and subsequent sale of mortgage-backed securities to US Central, Western Corporate, Southwest Corporate and Members United Corporate federal credit unions, the agency said.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Kansas, is the largest such lawsuit the regulator has filed to date. A JPMorgan spokeswoman declined to comment. In the past two years the agency has brought similar actions against Barclays Capital, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, RBS Securities, UBS Securities, Wachovia and others. Most of the cases are pending, but it has settled claims against Citigroup, Deutsche Bank Securities and HSBC for around $170 million. The agency has been trying to recover losses related to the failure of five institutions that it seized in 2009 and 2010 after they ran into trouble due to the crumbling housing market.

Falls by temporary power firm Aggreko, market heavyweight Vodafone hold back Britain’s FTSE BIG falls by temporary power firm Aggreko and market heavyweight Vodafone weighed on Britain’s top shares yesterday as the final full trading week of 2012 got off to a lacklustre start. Aggreko was the biggest percentage blue chip faller, dropping 22 per cent after the firm issued its second profit warning in two months, say-
ing there would be less need next year for its generators. “Aggreko shares now trade just above 52-week lows, crossing beneath its 200-DMA (day moving average) without any major support as investors remain bearish on the stock,” Rik Thakrar, risk manager and senior dealer at Spread Co. said.
“The dealing floor has noted a flurry of short selling activity in the stock, with traders viewing current lower levels as a consolidation point ahead of further falls throughout early 2013,” Thakrar added. Volume in Aggreko shares was the biggest on the blue chip board at over nine times its 90-day daily average.
Overall FTSE 100 volume was relatively thin at about three-quarters of the already low 90-day daily average as the festive lull approached. Volume was also strong in Vodafone, at 160 per cent of its daily average, as the mobile phone firm’s stock shed 1.7 per cent, accounting for over 5 points, or around half of the FTSE 100 index’s total decline.

Opinion
Refusal to budge on 13th salaries has prompted panicked begging THE PERMANENT secretary of the finance ministry, Christos Patsalides made no secret of the desperate situation the government finds itself in during yesterday’s House finance committee meeting. He said the government would be forced to stop payments in the next few days, if it did not secure the short term loans it was seeking from the staff pension funds of semi-governmental organisations. This was another example of the Christofias government’s recklessly incompetent running of the economy. A few days before the state was set to run out of money, the government is begging SGO workers to lend it money from their pension funds for three months. Had the finance ministry only just found out now there would be no money in December to pay the double salaries of the public sector? Several months ago, Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly had been telling us there was enough money to last until November so why had nothing been done to secure the necessary funds in the meantime? The government could have lightened its end-of-year funding needs, for instance, if it had agreed to the troika proposal about scrapping the 13th salaries for this year, instead of President Christofias publicly declaring the matter non-negotiable. With his public posturing he has put the state at risk of what Patsalides described as a ‘selective default’. Needless to say this problem would have been avoided if the spending cuts prepared by Shiarly last May, as part of our commitments to the EU, were implemented. But these were publicly vetoed by Christofias and no spending cuts were implemented until last week, as part of the memorandum of understanding. This was criminally irresponsible, especially as the government knew it could not borrow money to cover its funding needs. So yesterday the government resorted to emotional blackmail in order to secure the funds it required. It told the boards managing CyTA and EAC pension funds that if they did not agree to lend the state some €250 million, they would be responsible for the ‘selective default’, which would set off a chain of devastating consequences for the country. It would spark the complete collapse of the economy. Under the circumstances, we would expect the unions running the pension funds to acquiesce to the short term loan. The EAC was meeting yesterday evening to decide what it would do. This further complicated the problem, considering CyTA had said it would give €100 million on condition the EAC also agreed to lend the money. We are in this mess because we have a criminally irresponsible government, but it would not be the government the EAC unions would be punishing if they decided against the loan - it would be the entire country.

US won’t be shedding gun culture in a hurry Comment Gwynne Dyer
H
ere’s an interesting statistic: the secondhighest rate of gun ownership in the world is in Yemen, a largely tribal, extremely poor country. The highest is in the United States, where there are almost as many guns as people: around 300 million guns for 311 million people. But here’s another interesting statistic: in the past 25 years, the proportion of Americans who own guns has fallen from about one in three to only one in five. However, the United States, unlike Yemen, is a rich country, and the average American gun-owner has four or five firearms. Moreover, he or she is utterly determined to keep them no matter what happens. What has just happened in Sandy Hook, Connecticut is the seventh massacre this year in which four or more people were killed by a lone gunman. The fact that this time 20 of the victims were little girls and boys six or seven years old has caused a wave of revulsion in the United States, but it is not likely to lead to new laws on gun controls. It’s not even clear that new laws would help. Half the firearms in the entire world are in the United States. The rate of murders by gunfire in the United States is almost 20 times higher than the average rate in 22 other populous, highincome countries where the frequency of other crimes is about the same. There is clearly a connection between these two facts, but it is not necessarily simple causeand-effect. Here’s one reason to suspect that it’s not that simple: the American rate for murders of all kinds – shooting, strangling, stabbing, poisoning, pushing people under buses, and so forth. – is seven times higher than it is in those other 22 rich countries. It can’t just be guns. And here’s another clue: the rate of firearms homicides in Canada, another mainly English-speaking country in North America with a similar political heritage, is about half the American rate – and in England itself it is only one-thirtieth as much. What else is in play here? Steven Pinker, whose book The Better Angels of Our Nature is about the longterm decline in violence of every kind in the world, is well aware that murder rates have not fallen in the United States in the past century. (Most people don’t believe that violence is in decline anywhere, let alone almost everywhere. That’s why he wrote the book.) And Pinker suggests an explanation for the
In medieval Europe, where everyone from warlords to peasants was on his own when it came to defending property, rights and ‘honour’, the murder rates were astronomically high American exception. In medieval Europe, where everybody from warlords to peasants was on his own when it came to defending his property, his rights and his “honour”, the murder rates were astronomically high: 110 people per 100,000 in 14thcentury Oxford, for example. It was at least as high in colonial New England in the early 17th century. By the mid-20th century, the murder rate in England had fallen more than a hundredfold: in London, it was less than one person per 100,000 per year. In most Western European countries it was about the same. Whereas the United States murder rate is still up around seven people per 100,000 per year. We have to ask: why? Pinker quotes historian Pieter Spierenburg’s provocative suggestion that “democracy
came too early” to America. In European countries, the population was gradually disarmed by the centralised state as it put an end to feudal anarchy. Only much later, after people had already learned to trust the law to defend their property and protect them from violence, did democracy come to these countries. This is also what has happened in most other parts of the world, although in many cases it was the colonial power that disarmed the people and instituted the rule of law. But in the United States, where the democratic revolution came over two centuries ago, the people took over the state before they had been disarmed – and kept their weapons. They also kept their old attitudes. Indeed, large parts of the
‘In European countries, the population was gradually disarmed by the centralised state as it put an end to feudal anarchy ... But in the United States ... the people took over the state before they had been disarmed – and kept their weapons. They also kept their old attitudes.’
United States, particularly in the southeast and southwest, still have an “honour” culture in which it is accepted that a private individual may choose to defend his rights and his interests by violence rather than seeking justice through the law. The homicide rate in New England is fewer than three people per 100,000 per year; in the state of Louisiana it is more than 14. None of this explains the specific phenomenon of gun massacres by deranged individuals, who are presumably present at the same rate in every country. It’s just that in the United States, it’s easier for individuals like that to get access to rapid-fire weapons. And, of course, the intense media coverage of every massacre gives many other crazies an incentive to do the same, only more of it. But only one in 300 murders in the United States happens in that kind of massacre. Most are simply due to quarrels between individuals, often members of the same family. Private acts of violence to obtain “justice”, with or without guns, are deeply entrenched in American culture, and the murder rate would stay extraordinarily high even if there were no guns. Since there are guns everywhere, of course, the murder rate is even higher. But since the popular attitudes to violence have not changed, that is not going to change either. The Hobbit sets December record in US, Canada debut
Frank Ocean album tops critics’ poll
2012 box office is estimated at record $10.8 billion
CHART star Frank Ocean’s debut Channel Orange has been hailed the album of the year in a definitive poll of critics. The 25-year-old US hiphop artist triumphed in the annual HMV ‘poll of polls’ which draws together the choices of UK music writers. Ocean, whose album has so far made it to number two in the UK charts, was last week nominated for six Grammy Awards. The openly gay star - unusual in the hip-hop world - has drawn continual acclaim since the release of his album in July and it has been chosen as album of the year by five UK publications. Second place in the poll goes to former White Stripes and Raconteurs frontman Jack White with Blunderbuss, his first album under his own name. In third position is Australian psychedelic rock act Tame Impala with their release Lonerism. The highest ranked UK artist is Jessie Ware whose Devotion is placed sixth. Retailer HMV styles the list as the definitive guide to the year’s best releases after collating and weighting the various nominations which are compiled from the choices of national print and online titles. Past choices have included last year’s Let England Shake by PJ Harvey, Arcade Fire’s Suburbs in 2010 and Songs For The Deaf by Queens Of The Stone Age in 2002. HMV music manager John Hirst said: “It’s no surprise that Frank Ocean has come so high up in many critics’ top 10s. He’s hugely talented and his name’s been on a lot of people’s lips for a few years now. “There’s a certain Stevie Wonder quality about him, and aside from having released a truly wonderful debut album, Frank has also earned a great deal of credit in the way he has challenged hip-hop stereotypes. I think we’re going to hear a lot more from him in future.”
By Patricia Reaney and Lisa Richwine THE Hobbit brought home a big box office treasure over the weekend, setting a December movie record with $84.77 million in US and Canadian ticket sales as legions of fans turned out for the long-awaited big-screen return to Middle Earth. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey also rang up sales of $138.2 million in international markets. Global receipts for the prequel to the smash Lord of the Rings trilogy stood at $222.97 million through Sunday, distributor Warner Bros. said. The current projection for the total box office take in 2012 is $10.8 billion, according to an estimate from Hollywood.com, which would beat the $10.6 billion record in 2009. The 3D Hobbit directed by Oscar-winning Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson is the first of three films based on a 1937 classic novel by J.R.R. Tolkien. Warner Bros. is aiming to build on the success of the Rings series, one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises with $2.9 billion in global ticket sales. The Hobbit also set a record with its $15.1 million earnings from IMAX thea-
The 3D Hobbit directed by Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson is the first of three films based on a 1937 classic novel by J.R.R. Tolkien tres worldwide, according to Warner Bros. It is also the largest opening for any film in the canon of The Lord of the Rings. The Lord of the Rings movies debuted in theatres from 2001 to 2003. After that, production on The Hobbit ran into delays, leaving fans waiting a decade for another look at the fantasy story of dwarves, wizards and elves. The opening weekend Hobbit sales proved interest remained high. North American (US and Canadian) receipts toppled the old record for December set by Will Smith sci-fi flick I Am Legend, which pulled in $77.2 million when it de-
buted in 2007. “The best we were hoping for was to reach or exceed the $77 million set by that movie and we did it by quite a lot. It was all good and we’re very happy about it,” said Dan Fellman, president of theatrical distribution for Warner Bros. “You have to assume that by the time this first week is over we are going to have around $110 million in the bank before the holiday even starts,” he added. The new film follows the epic journey of hobbit Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, as he travels through the treacherous Middle Earth with a band of
dwarves to steal treasures from the dragon, Smaug. The movie also stars Richard Armitage and Benedict Cumberbatch, while Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood reprise their Rings roles. Opening-weekend audiences embraced The Hobbit, awarding an ‘A’ grade in polling by survey firm CinemaScore. Critics had a mixed response to the nearly three-hour film. Sixty-five per cent of reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website recommended the movie, although some objected to Jackson’s decision to shoot it using a 48-frames-persecond format rather than
the usual 24. The faster frame rate delivers clearer pictures, but some critics called the format cartoonish and jarring. Only a fraction of theatres showed the film in the new format. Some fans at early screenings in New Zealand complained it made them feel nauseous and dizzy, according to The New Zealand Herald. The next two Hobbit movies are scheduled to reach theatres in December 2013 and July 2014. The films were financed by MGM and Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema unit for an estimated $500 million.
Casablanca piano sells Holmes has ‘best revenge body’ for $602,500 at auction By Chris Michaud A PIANO used in the classic film Casablanca sold for just over $600,000 (371,057 pounds), falling far short of predictions that it could fetch $1 million or more. The 58-key upright piano on which actor and singer Dooley Wilson performed As Time Goes By, the signature song of the 1942 film’s star-crossed lovers played by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, sold at Sotheby’s for $602,500 including commission. The auction house had assigned the iconic prop a pre-sale estimate of $800,000 to $1.2 million, given some astonishing prices attained by movie memorabilia in recent years. In the film, the character Sam (Wilson) plays the signature song As Time Goes By during flashback scenes set in Paris, as well as in Bogart’s club in Casablanca, where he and Bergman rekindle their romance.
MEMORABLE LINES Bergman’s memorable lines included the imploring: “Play it, Sam. Play As Time Goes By.” Sotheby’s had sold the piano, which was the one used during the Paris flashback scenes, to a Japanese collector in 1988, who paid $154,000, one of the highest prices ever paid for a movie prop at the time. The film, set in Morocco during World War Two, won three Academy Awards including best picture, best writing and best director for Michael Curtiz. The auction house did not identify the buyer.
The actress split from Tom Cruise in June after six years
KATIE Holmes has been voted the celebrity with the ‘best revenge body’ of 2012. The star - who split from Tom Cruise in June after six years of marriage and won full custody of their daughter Suri, six, - topped the annual fit list, compiled by Fitness magazine. The magazine ranked the 33-year-old actress’s figure slightly ahead of 28-yearold singer Katy Perry’s post break-up body, whose divorce from British comedian husband Russell Brand was also finalised last summer after just 14 months of marriage. Katie is frequently spotted attending spinning classes in New York at the popular celebrity exercise centre Soul Cycle, and also maintains her petite curves by sticking to a diet rich in vegetables and fruit. Katie recently revealed that she comes from a health conscious family and said that her family even goes running together before tucking into their Thanksgiving dinner.

Nearly four in 10 US residents blame weather on ‘end times’ By Mary Wisniewski NEARLY four in 10 US residents say the severity of recent natural disasters such as Superstorm Sandy is evidence the world is coming to an end, as predicted by the Bible, while more than six in 10 blame it on climate change, according to a poll released in the last week. The survey by the Public Religion Research Institute in partnership with the Religion News Service found political and religious disagreement on what is behind severe weather, which this year has included ex-
treme heat and drought. Most Catholics (60 per cent) and white non-evangelical Protestants (65 per cent) say they believe disasters like hurricanes and floods are the result of climate change. But nearly two-thirds (65 per cent) of white evangelical Protestants say they think the storms are evidence of the “end times” as predicted by the Bible. Overall, 36 per cent point to end times and 63 per cent to climate change. PRRI research director Daniel Cox said that some respondents - including 75 per cent of non-white Protestants - believe extreme weather is both evidence of end times
and the result of climate change. “No one really knows how (end times) would look and how God would bring it about,” Cox said. Politics also colour perceptions of the weather, the survey found. More than threequarters of Democrats and six in 10 independents believe that the weather has become more extreme over the last few years, while less than half of Republicans say they have perceived such a shift. “Their political leanings are even affecting how they experience weather, which is pretty fascinating,” said Cox. The January-to-November period in the
United States this year was the warmest first 11 months of any year on record for the contiguous states. And 2012 will likely surpass 1998 as the warmest year on record for the nation, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Most climate scientists believe that the warming trend for the nation and the world is tied to human activity, such as the burning of fossil fuels. Extreme storms like Sandy, along with more intense droughts, wildfires and floods, are projected by some as the result of climate change, though scientists are reluctant to attribute individual events to global warming.

‘Major change’ in EU fishing quotas sought
Climate sceptic blog leaks revealing draft report from the IPCC
EUROPEAN ministers have approved the catching of millions more tonnes of fish than scientists have advised over the past nine years, a report has shown. Fisheries ministers, who meet annually to decide the quotas for stocks across Europe, have only strictly followed scientific advice on fisheries in 13 per cent of their decisions, the report by WWF found. On average, quotas have been set 45 per cent higher than levels recommended by scientists, which means ministers have allowed the overfishing of more than 6.2 million tonnes of fish beyond levels proposed to ensure that stocks are safely maintained. Almost half the stocks in the North East Atlantic are judged to be over-fished, while the figure is as high as 80 per cent in the Mediterranean. WWF is calling on members of the European Parliament voting on reform of the Common Fisheries Policy, which governs the industry across the EU, next week to put requirements to follow scientific advice at the heart of stocks management. The conservation charity’s report accused governments of systematically ignoring scientific advice and setting quotas for shortterm political and economic gain at the expense of longterm sustainability. The report also said the EU had spent £6 million on scientific advice since 2003, that ministers were not then taking into account. Recent analysis suggests the potential benefits to the EU fishing industry of managing stocks sustainably could be £1.7 billion annually.
By Nina Chestney and Alister Doyle INTERNATIONAL climate scientists are more certain than ever that humans are responsible for global warming, rising sea levels and extreme weather events, according to a leaked draft report by an influential panel of experts. The early draft, which is still subject to change before a final version is released in late 2013, showed that a rise in global average temperatures since pre-industrial times was set to exceed 2 degrees Celsius by 2100, and may reach 4.8 Celsius. “It is extremely likely that human activities have caused more than half of the observed increase in global average surface temperatures since the 1950s,” the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) draft report said. “Extremely likely” in the IPCC’s language means a level of certainty of at least 95 per cent. The next level is “virtually certain”, or 99 per cent, the greatest possible certainty for the scientists. The IPCC’s previous report, in 2007, said it was at least 90 per cent certain that human activities, led by burning fossil fuels, were the cause of rising temperatures. The draft was shown on a climate change sceptic blog. The IPCC said the unauthorised, premature posting of the draft may lead to confusion because the report was still work in progress and was likely to change before it is released. The IPCC said it had “high
Destruction: the scene after Sandy struck New York earlier this year
confidence” that human activity had caused large-scale changes in oceans, in ice sheets or mountain glaciers, and in sea levels in the second half of the twentieth century, according to the draft. It said some extreme weather events had also changed due to human influences. The draft’s scenarios forecast a rise in temperatures of between 0.2 and 4.8 Celsius this century - a narrower band than in 2007. But in almost all of the scenarios, the rise would exceed 2 degrees
Celsius. Governments pledged in 2010 to try to stop global temperatures rising by more than 2 degrees, a threshold seen by scientists as the maximum to avoid more extreme weather, droughts, floods, and other climate change impacts. Carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere were the highest in 800,000 years, according to the draft report. The draft also said that sea levels were likely to rise by
between 29 and 82 centimetres by the end of the century - compared to 18 to 59 centimetres projected in the 2007 report. Rising sea levels are a threat to people living in low-lying areas, from Bangladesh to the cities of New York, London and Buenos Aires. They open up the risk of storm surges, coastal erosion and, in the worst case scenario, the complete swamping of large areas of land. The IPCC carries weight because it brings together all
scientific research on climate change and informs policymakers. Many countries want to study the final IPCC report before signing up to a new global pact to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The draft included a possible future acceleration of ice loss from Antarctica and Greenland, which was omitted in 2007. It stopped short of including some research carried out since 2007 that suggested seas may rise by up to 2 metres by 2100.
UK marine conservation zones announced 425m-year-old shrimp-like fossil find hailed DOZENS of marine sites in the UK covering an area around three times the size of Cornwall will be given increased protection next year, under plans outlined by the government. A total of 31 sites, home to wildlife ranging from seahorses to corals, will be designated as marine conservation zones in 2013, under proposals put out for consultation by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). But no areas will be given the highest level of protection as no-take zones, where all damaging activities such as fishing are banned. And the 31 areas that are set to be designated next year are only a proportion of the 127
marine conservation zones that were recommended for English and Welsh waters to create a coherent network of wildlife-protected sites in the UK’s seas. Natural environment minister Richard Benyon said: “The UK has one of the world’s richest marine environments, and we need to make sure it stays that way. “This is why we are creating a network of marine-protected areas. “We have to get this right. “Designating the right sites in the right places, so that our seas are sustainable, productive and healthy, and to ensure that the right balance is struck between conservation and industry.”
TWO “special” fossils unearthed in Herefordshire, UK include not only the animals’ shells but also their soft parts including body, limbs, eyes, gills and guts. For tiny shrimp-like creatures that are 425 million years old, they look in pretty good shape. Luckily for the scientists who found them, the ostracods were preserved by a fall of volcanic ash at a time when Britain had a subtropical climate. Professor David Siveter, from the University of Leicester, said: “The two ostracod specimens discovered represent a genus and species new to science, named Pauline avibella.
“The genus is named in honour of a special person and avibella means ‘beautiful bird’, so-named because of the fancied resemblance of a prominent feature of the shell to the wing of a bird. “Ostracods are the most abundant fossil arthropods, occurring ubiquitously as bivalved shells in rocks of the last 490 million years, and are common in most water environments today. The find is important because it is one of only a handful preserving the fossilised soft-tissues of ostracods.” The centimetre-long fossils were “reconstructed” using a technique that involves grinding each specimen down, layer by layer, and photographing each stage.

LL the current cu debate about the sleazy Seventies has got me thinking about what y it felt like to be a young girl then. In 1970, I was 14 but looked ol older. I had started my p period when I was 10 an and felt sexually mature - although I was far fr from it, not havingprogr havingprogressed much further than snogging and, that hideous expre expression from the arc archives, “heavy pettin petting”. I had not yet, an another of those set-in set-in-aspic phrases, “gon “gone all the way”. I w was at an all-girls b boarding school and most of my friends friends, like me, saw our v virginity as someth something to lose as soon as we decently (or even indecently) could. None of us was moony-eyed and romantic; we didn’t need to be in lo love, it was far more iimportant to be in llust. I’m not sur sure how much of the talk w wa s bravad was bravado and how much was a genuine ac ache to throw asid aside our awkward, c clumsy teenage selve selves and emerge - th through the alchemy of the sex act - m miraculously transfo transformed, as we believ believed it would be, int into the beautiful peop people we admired. Cer Certainly, w we younger girls w we re struck b were by the expression on one of the coolest sixth former’s fac face as she sprawle sprawled on the sofa in the com-

She had spent the long summer holidays on beaches in the south of France and whatever experience she’d savoured - to paraphrase the most famous When Harry Met Sally moment - we wanted a taste of it, too. What I remember most from that adolescent era was the terrible, drawn-out endlessness of time. For such long stretches, we were so terribly bored and with that lassitude came a longing to be where the action was, to be part of that scene elsewhere, to be anywhere and be anything other than where and what we were, lying on the great green sprawl of the playing fields, behind our boarding houses, furtively smoking our first cigarettes (horrible Woodbines) and plotting about how - come the holidays – we would break free and have great sexual adventures and become Grown Up. We had put away our childish pleasure of dancing to Top of the Pops – our Thursday evening highlight - on the stage behind the blue velvet curtain, mimicking the moves of Pan’s People (we all had our favourites - Babs Powell, Flick Colby et al). The DJs who presented the show meant nothing to us. Really, they were just a shouty, gabby irritant to link one act to the next. If we thought about Jimmy Savile at all, which we didn’t, it was how embarrassing and dreadful he was in his stupid sunglasses and horrid DayGlo nylon tracksuits and weird, wig-like platinum hair. The idea of a man like him - or hairy Dave Lee Travis (DLT) – being remotely any kind of sexual being didn’t cross our
minds. But that is not to say th i th thatt we - th the minors, the underage schoolgirls - didn’t imagine what it would be like to kiss and press ourselves against (and considerably more) the real stars of that world, such as Mick Jagger, who was such a priapic prince then in his insolence and swagger, so confident of his sexual allure that he dared to be feminine (wearing makeup and long, gossamer shirts that were like dresses). He, we felt with some confidence, as we strutted around in our loons and Biba T-shirts, to Brown Sugar, would be indubitably GIB (Good in Bed). It wasn’t just Mick who was playing with his female identity; something he explored explicitly in the film Perform-

There were many examples, such as this one, where men did not take advantage of me. I met older men on planes who befriended me, and would take me out for dinner with their friends - and they never laid a hand on me. I had nights with various guys I met at gigs but they never insisted on going any further than I felt comfortable with. So I ended up losing my virginity to my first boyfriend, who couldn’t have been more considerate and caring. I wouldn’t have had anything to do with the likes of Savile and that really is the point. Yes, the Seventies was a sex-drenched time, yes, young girls can be sexually precocious, but this doesn’t let the old bastards off the hook because they really should know better. Making

The point of this Savile horror show, along with all the other radio DJs and producers who are being questioned, is not that we don’t understand the allure of peachy youth but that, in this instance, the Oscar Wilde line that “I can resist everything but temptation” just won’t wash. Wanting to shed my virginity meant that I got myself into all sorts of scrapes. One night, I was in bed with some older guy at a party (it was two in the morning; I was tired and, as I recall, there weren’t a lot of spare beds in the house). He had taken speed and was tiresomely nagging me to have sex. When I declined, I got the usual spiel we girls were used to if we wouldn’t put out: “You’re frigid, you must be a lesbian.” (This from the sort of men who would pay quite a lot of money to see lesbian action.) a habit of screwing around with underage girls does say something about you. And, of course, Savile never homed in on confident girls from stable backgrounds - it was always the most vulnerable and voiceless. But I have to say, for all my gang’s desire to bed a real sex-god like Jagger, as he was then, I’m glad for all our sakes it never happened. Although I could never go along with my glamorous mother’s admonition that my generation and I were “giving it all away” when we should have been, as she and her friends were, “goddesses on a pedestal”, I think we would have been cheapened and bruised by the experience, as baby groupies to be used and cast aside. If I had daughters, rather than the sons I do have, I absolutely wouldn’t want that for them - and I wouldn’t have wanted it for me. My night with Jagger would not have been a story for the retelling.

Tonight Music Organist tunes up for festive concert Fancy a break from the frantic festive preparations? With Christmas fast bearing down upon us, we’re drowning in musical eggnog. This evening, why not head down to Saint Paul’s Cathedral where Prof Krysteva will be performing works by Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Sebastian Bach, Nicolaus Bruhns, Ferencz Liszt, Krassimir Kurkchijsky on the church organ. The evening is organised by the Union of Bulgarians in Cyprus and the cultural society St. Clement Ochridski. While organ music may not be your typical holiday celebrant, a musical evening such as this will help acquaint local audiences with one of the most
Review Theatre Child’s play Probably the most challenging theatre audience is that of children. Yet theatre Antidote, over the past decade, have created a unique formula for this; one which speaks to children in exactly the same tone and manner with which one might speak to adults, selecting powerful themes, and consistently succeeding in entertaining, moving and educating both children and their parents. All I want for Christmas is no exception, yet it stands out from previous Antidote productions which have favoured minimal dialogue, by endeavouring instead a 45 minute monologue for kids aged 5 plus. Written, directed and performed by Catherine Beger, the show follows the story of homeless bag-lady, Charity, begging a few euros off passers-by, by performing Christmas carols with her mouse, Scabbers. At times Charity entertains us, while at others (in the true nature of her character) she becomes irritating. Yet as she reveals her Christmas list, and we discover the true reasons behind her begging, we begin to see how giving a few euros to ‘charity’ might truly change someone’s Christmas. An unlikely heroine, and certainly the show’s greatest challenge
prominent Bulgarian organists in Europe. Prof Krysteva is also famous for being composer, music theoretician and pedagogue. She graduated from the State Conservatoire in Moscow where she studied Musicology with Professor Yuri Holopov and Organ with Professor Leonid Royzman. Her postgraduate studies in organ continued in Prague and Zurich. Since 1973 Prof Krysteva has been teaching at the State Academy of Music and founded the first organ class in Bulgaria. She has enjoyed an active concert career in Bulgaria, throughout Europe and Asia and has twice performed the complete organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach in concert in Sofia. Furthermore, she has recorded for the Bulgarian National Radio and the Bulgarian National Television.

Church Organ Christmas Concert Christmas Concert with Prof. Dr. Neva Krysteva. December 18. Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Byron Avenue, Nicosia. 8pm. Free. Tel: 22-445221 is getting children to side with a cockney homeless woman (parents on the other hand are easily moved by her words), yet the beauty and enthusiasm with which Charity narrates two Christmas tales – the nativity story and Twas the Night before Christmas, wins over the kids as they see mops, pots and even a toilet roll being used as puppets. And while they challenge her throughout, as she nestles down to sleep in her cardboard box, the children hold their breath to see if Santa will ultimately come and grant her wish. Beger has also designed the set, a beautiful snow-covered corner which she encourages the children to come into at the end and play with the confetti-snow. There is no hesitation in this request – the kids bounce onto the scene and party, knowing full well that Antidote shows don’t end with the bow. With audience participation, songs and stories, the production borderlines a pantomime-style, yet it maintains the much finer theatre quality defined by this distinctive and powerful company. On for one more show on Sunday December 29 at the Youth Foundation, Larnaca (near St.Lazaros Church). All I Want For Christmas... A play staged by Antidote Theatre, written and performed by Catherine Beger. December 16. Larnaca Youth Foundation, near Ayios Lazaros Church. 5pm. In English. €7/5. Tel: 96-216435

When it comes to the art of political resistance, hunger strikes, marches and pamphlets are among the popular, nonviolent resistance tools used to demand human rights and peace. But in Mexico, one protest stands out for its moral force: a string of thousands of white scarves embroidered with the names and stories of people who have been killed or have gone missing in the country’s struggle against narco-trafficking. Tonight, the Cyprus Community Media Centre (CCMC), in Nicosia will be hosting an exhibition that showcases scarves embroidered by relatives of missing persons in Mexico. In this country, threads, needles and fabrics have become powerful tools, in a project that calls attention to the tens of thousands of drugrelated deaths during Mexican President Felipe Calderon’s six-year term. Since Calderon began an all-out assault on drug cartels in 2006, Mexico has been plagued by a wave of violence that has left more than 50,000 people dead and thousands missing without trace in a nearly-continuous string of shootouts, bombings, and ever-bloodier murders. In cities like Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City, men and women of all ages have decided to speak out and share their thoughts and experiences on violence by participating in a collective relief effort through embroidery. The idea of embroidering scarves as an act of protest came from Fuentes Rojas (Red Fountains), a group of artists who have dyed the water in fountains red to protest the bloodshed by the government’s militarised security strategy. The activists first began to embroider scarves in their meetings. In August 2011, during a day of artistic and cultural activities organised by the Movement for Peace and Justice with Dignity, they held their first collective embroidering session in the Zocalo, Mexico City’s central square. After that, they held such gatherings every Sunday in Coyoacán square, in the south of the capital, and next to the Torre Latinoamericana in central Mexico City. The point of embroidering for peace is to generate visibility and hope. They are a symbol and a practical means of preserving the
memory of the violence that has occurred since President Calderon took office. From its humble beginnings, various groups of citizens committed to peace in Mexico have formed embroidery groups in public plazas – activities in which other countries have now joined in solidarity. The exhibition which opens tonight and runs until Friday, is organised by Together we Can, a bi-communal civil society organisation for the missing, in co-operation with Brodaras por la Paz and Fueraz Unidas por Nuestros Desaparecidos/as en Nuevo Leon FUNDENL (associations of relatives of missing persons from Mexico). In Cyprus, visitors can explore the scarves embroidered by relatives of those missing from Guadalajara and Monterrey. Women and men embroider on white handkerchiefs with red thread, inscribing the names, where available, and the circumstances of death. Green thread is used for the missing, in hope they may be found alive. The exhibition will be opened by Huseyin Akansoy and Petros Souppouris, holders of the European Citizen Award from the European Parliament. The European Citizen’s Prize was launched by the European Parliament in 2008 to recognise exceptional achievements by Europeans. Guest speakers for the evening also include Christos Efthymiou from the bi-communal Initiative Together we Can who will give the opening address, investigative journalist Sevgul Uludag, who will discuss the story behind the scarves and Ricardo Lopez, Consultant for Audiovisual Matters, who will speak about Latin America and the Missing. Each Scarf Tells the Story of a Missing Person Exhibition of scarves embroidered by the relatives of missing persons in Mexico. Opens December 18, 6pm until December 21. By Preston Wilder manity, expressed in how you use it, how you flaunt it, whether you give it freely to a friend in need. In a world where everything’s confused and we’re all just “waiting to die”, consideration for others - whether it’s giving money or not jumping a queue - is the only real truth. Makes sense to me. Made in 2006.
Friends With Money (LTV3, 20.00) Multi-character dramas tend to be less than the sum of their parts, and writer-director Nicole Holofcener (a specialist in the angst of comfortable middle-class lives) made a better one later with Please Give - but this one’s also pretty good, starring Jennifer Aniston as a woman who loses her job and is forced to work as a maid, complicating her relationships with her rich, married friends. They include Frances McDormand (the belligerent Angry Friend), Catherine Keener and Joan Cusack - and the film is rather glib, written with the usual reliance on one-liners, but it’s also on to something in the way it turns money into more than just a status symbol: it becomes a test of one’s hu-
The Big Bang Theory (LTV2, 20.30)
Friends With Money
The dazzling success of The Big Bang Theory (Season 5 kicks off tonight on LTV): proof that a smash-hit sitcom can be created by repeating the same few jokes over and over. “That sounds like sarcasm, but I’m going to disregard it,” says Sheldon in tonight’s opening episode - and Sheldon is the best joke of all, the nerdi-
est of the show’s nerdy scientists whose near-autistic unfamiliarity with normal human behaviour never gets old. “Let’s put on our thinking caps, shall we?” he says - then actually picks up an invisible cap and puts it on his head, tying an invisible bow around his neck! The others are mostly foils for his magnificent weirdness, including Raj who’s just slept with Penny and doesn’t think it’ll ruin their friendship: “You can’t ruin a friendship with sex, that’s like trying to ruin ice-cream with chocolate sprinkles”. Interesting viewpoint - but I think the last word should go to Sheldon: “For the record, I do have genitals. They’re functional, and aesthetically pleasing”. Too much information, but thank you. ‘The Skank Reflex Analysis’ is the episode title.

ARIES March 21 - April 20
LEO July 23 - August 22
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21
A good day for meetings and conversations. Your ability to sell anything to anyone can be awesome. You can also do a very good job of promoting yourself. Jupiter in Gemini increases the tempo and you can need plenty to keep you stimulated. There is also a hint of passion in the air. But most of all, your thoughts may be on getting away for a break.
A romance can be back on again, and you may be looking for a chance to relax and enjoy life. As party season is in full swing, you’re likely to take advantage of invites, and perhaps arrange a few get-togethers of your own. You’ll still be busy finishing off last-minute tasks. Within your busy schedule, try to recharge your batteries when possible.
You seem to be the life and soul of the party. Get yourself noticed by making some shrewd moves regarding your finances. Home projects can also be rewarding. If you need to do any DIY before the festivities begin, you’ll do well to get to it right now. This evening you may want to plan an event. Bringing friends together in happy accord can get you buzzing.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21
VIRGO August 23 - September 23
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20
You seem to feel confident about your financial affairs and shared assets. Perhaps you want to reshuffle debt or find another way to make your money work harder for you. It’s a good time to explore new options and think outside of the proverbial box. Meanwhile, the Moon in Pisces can make this a perfect evening to spend with friends.
Life’s a ball - perhaps focused on your home, family fun and entertainment. It seems everyone wants to come round to your place to sample your fabulous hospitality. Whether single or in a partnership, you won’t have much chance to be alone. Settled? The Moon in Pisces is perfect for spending some quality time with your sweetheart this evening.
You seem to be on a spiritual high, just now. The continued focus on your mystic zone suggests you may even enjoy some good karma. Any good deeds can come back to bless you in the nicest way possible. At the same time, you’re keen to overcome obstacles and get projects up and running. A work gathering could also prove to be a lot of fun.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21
LIBRA September 24 - October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19
Your social life has picked up and looks to be fun and exciting. You may be getting non-stop invites, and plenty of opportunities to meet new people and attend some interesting events. At the same time, Mars may be encouraging you to sort out joint finances as well as debts or other issues, sooner rather than later. The spotlight beckons at work.
Conversation flows freely today with a focus on communication, learning and connecting the dots. You’ll love to explore new ideas, especially those that take you into new territory. On the home front, you may be busy putting finishing touches to your festive preparations. A focus on your health zone encourages a dedicated approach to exercise.
Feelings that you thought were long forgotten and buried, may resurface. Don’t let them affect your perception of present circumstances too much, yet do try to learn from them. Practising the art of forgiveness may help you feel better and increase your energy levels. Be sure to stay in control of your finances today. Spending wildly can leave you feeling empty.
CANCER June 22 - July 22
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22
PISCES February 20 - March 20
You seem to be getting on well in your job, with challenges that both excite and encourage you to do your best. Health wise, you seem to be in growing spirits. You may be back on track with daily workouts or at least a good walk when you can. Diet wise, you may be drawn to rich foods - so some discipline is needed. A good time to define boundaries in relationships.
The focus may be on purchasing last-minute festive goodies, as well as any bargains you can find. You’re in the mood to be generous, but nevertheless, it helps to stick to a budget to keep you on track. Your social life continues to be buoyant and upbeat. Tonight is perfect for a get-together back at your place with a few of your closest friends.
Despite being busy with home and family matters, you seem to be on the go career wise too. If you have interviews today, you’ll be confident and in control. The Moon in your sign brings a chance to wish for what you want, with a chance it just might happen. Think confident and successful thoughts, and you may excel in more ways than one.

Sport BBC sports personality prize caps great year for Wiggins Ennis takes second place, Murray third By Paul Hirst BRADLEY Wiggins’ remarkable year came to a perfect conclusion on Sunday night as he was named winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in the city where he cruised to Olympic glory this summer. Having clinched gold in the time trial at London 2012 just ten days after becoming the first Briton to win the Tour de France, Wiggins was always the strong favourite to win the prestigious award at London’s ExCeL Arena. And the cyclist duly won the public vote, beating Jessica Ennis and Andy Murray into second and third places on an evening which paid tribute to Britain’s Olympic stars. The Duchess of Cambridge and David Beckham presented the top award. The affable Wiggins, 32, has enjoyed the finest year of a glittering career, winning the Tour, Olympic gold, ParisNice, the Tour of Romandy and the Criterium du Dauphine. Wiggins caused huge laughter in the auditorium when he referred to host Sue Barker as ‘Susan’ during the opening stages of the ceremony, and again enthused the crowd with his acceptance speech. To cheers of “Wiggo, Wiggo”, the cyclist, beamingly proudly, said: “I am not going to swear tonight. I will just say thank you to everyone who rang up and voted. “We have had all that jungle stuff and X Factor stuff in the
Tour de France champion and Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins was given the prestigious award by David Beckham and the Duchess of Cambridge last couple of weeks, so... “For people who picked up and paid £1.50 to vote, thank you very much, and thanks to my nan. Your cheque’s is in the post because I know you will have pressed redial so many times. “What a year. To be standing on this stage with the likes of these people next to me is incredible.” Wiggins paid tribute to fellow riders plus the performance director and coach who have guided British cycling to a new high. “I’d like to thank my teammates, Dave Brailsford and
Shane Sutton,” he said. I’d like to thank British Cycling and Sky for paying me.” Wiggins was always the favourite to land the award after his exploits this summer, but bookmakers had slashed Ennis’ odds by the start of the programme, suggesting the heptathlete was a major contender to win after her golden year. Murray, who received his third-place award in Miami from Lennox Lewis, can count himself unlucky, having ended Britain’s 76-year wait for a men’s grand slam singles victory in September
when he beat Novak Djokovic in the final of the US Open. That win came just a month after he beat Roger Federer in the final of the men’s singles at the Olympics, avenging the heart-breaking defeat the Swiss inflicted upon him in the Wimbledon title match in July. The night became a glowing tribute to Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic stars. Team GB and Paralympics GB, who won 65 and 120 medals respectively at London 2012, jointly claimed the Team of the Year award. Brailsford was rewarded
with the coaching award after overseeing Wiggins’ Tour win and taking charge of the British cycling team at London 2012. An emotional Lord Coe won the Lifetime Achievement award, for his role in securing and delivering the Games as well as his own stellar track career. The fastest man on the planet, Usain Bolt, claimed the Overseas Sports Personality of the Year trophy after winning the Olympic 100 metres, 200 metres and the 4x100 metres relay with Jamaica.
49ers stave off Pats fightback to reach NFL playoffs By Jahmal Corner
Impressive: San Francisco’s second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw four touchdowns
THE San Francisco 49ers squandered a 28point lead against an explosive New England Patriots on Sunday but recovered late on to secure a playoffs berth with a thrilling 41-34 road victory. The 49ers dominated early in rainy New England, racing to a 31-3 advantage in the third quarter but Tom Brady and his topranked Patriots offence caught fire with 28 unanswered points to tie the game with a little under seven minutes remaining. San Francisco’s second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick responded seconds later with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree, his fourth TD throw of the game, to put the 49ers (10-3-1) back in front for good. “We just had to put more points on the board,” Kaepernick told reporters, of his reaction to New England’s comeback.
“Tom Brady is a great quarterback... they’re a very potent offence that can put up points. We knew we were going to have to match that.” After their offence regained control, the visitors’ vaunted defence played its part in a lively fourth-quarter as they stalled Brady on two straight drives before David Akers added a San Francisco field goal for a 41-31 lead. New England (10-4) added a field goal in the final minute but their onside kick attempt was unsuccessful as their seven-game winning streak came to a screeching halt. Brady finished with 443 yards passing but he coughed up two interceptions and was sacked three times as the Patriots paid the price for giving up four turnovers. “We battled back, we just made too many mistakes when we needed to make plays,” Brady said. “It’s a tough loss. You can’t play poorly against a good team and expect to win.”
IN BRIEF Grosjean wins Race of Champions FRENCH Formula One driver Romain Grosjean, whose future with the Lotus team is yet to be confirmed, beat Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher on his way to winning the Race of Champions event in Bangkok on Sunday. Dubbed a ‘first lap nutcase’ by Australian Mark Webber after he caused a number of collisions this year, Grosjean showed a steadier side to his talents. After beating Red Bull’s triple champion Vettel in the quarter-finals and seventime F1 champion Schumacher in the semi-finals, Grosjean went on to defeat Denmark’s eight-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Tom Kristensen in the bestof-three race final at the Rajamangala Stadium. “It’s been a tough end to the Formula One season but I finally got back on the podium yesterday and now this,” Grosjean, who lost the team final to the German pair on Saturday, said on the event website. “It’s great to get this win before I head off for a holiday,” added the 2011 GP2 champion. The annual event pits winners and champions from various motorsport series against each other over several rounds in identical machinery.
‘Linsanity’ limps out JEREMY Lin could be excused for wondering where all the mass hysteria he attracted last season has gone, but the Houston Rockets guard is not one to draw unnecessary attention to himself. When Lin visited the Toronto Raptors in February he was a member of the New York Knicks, playing the best basketball of his career and the face of a global craze dubbed ‘Linsanity’ that transcended the sporting world. But in Sunday’s 103-96 road loss to a weak Raptors team Lin had a pedestrian seven points, a far cry from the 27 he had in February when he made a game-winning three-pointer for the Knicks with under a second to play. “If I could turn it on like a switch like that easy I would obviously turn it on but that’s not how it works,” Lin told a group of reporters that paled in comparison to the crowd he drew in February when a special room was set up to accommodate the flood of media.

Sport Clarke injured as Sri Lanka chase 393 in Hobart By Nick Mulvenney
Amir Khan (left) bounced back from defeat to Danny Garcia in July by battering Carlos Molina on Saturday night in Los Angeles
Khan eager to settle score Brit looks impressive in taking out Molina and calls for Garcia rematch By Phil Barnett AMIR Khan has a point to prove against Danny Garcia following his defeat by the American in July, insisting he will put the record straight if he can secure a rematch in 2013. Khan has failed to secure return clashes with previous conquerors Breidis Prescott and Lamont Peterson but remains hopeful of avenging his loss to Garcia after being pummelled by the Philadelphian in July. He had looked impressive in the early stages of that fight before getting caught and being floored three
times en route to a fourthround stoppage. After forcing a 10th-round retirement win in his return against Carlos Molina this weekend, he is eager to avenge the Garcia loss. He told Press Association Sport: “I’d love the rematch against Garcia because I know deep down I’m a better fighter than him. “I made a mistake in that fight and I paid for that mistake. “But I know I can beat him. I know I’m a better fighter, especially with the help of my new trainer Virgil Hunter and being based in San Francisco. “I’m a better fighter and I’ll
knock Danny Garcia out. “We want the rematch - any time, anywhere - but I don’t think Garcia will.” Garcia - who is scheduled to defend his WBC and WBA belts against Zab Judah in February - insists he is up for it if a satisfactory deal can be struck. “If the money’s right then we’ll definitely fight whenever and wherever,” he told Press Association Sport. “But it’s up to what Golden Boy wants because I can say yeah let’s do it, but really I have no control over it. “I’m not the businessman in this team. I’m the athlete, the entertainer. I let my team do the business and I
prepare for the fight.” Garcia would not fancy a trip to England, though. “Man, I don’t know if I’d come back alive - they’d be waiting for me at the airport or they’ll be waiting for my dad. I love you guys but I’m okay, thanks! “If everything is right then we can do it.” Khan managed to get back on a winning streak of sorts with his dominant win over Molina, outboxing the Californian at the LA Memorial Sports Arena before Molina’s corner pulled him out after the 10th. “I thought I stuck to my gameplan and was keeping faith in my jab,” Khan
said. “Carlos took some really good shots but was still coming forward, so I thought to myself I’d better stick to this gameplan. “Virgil Hunter, my new coach, is a great trainer and I’m getting better at boxing, being a complete fighter. He’s teaching me things, like speed, patience, picking the right shots and when to throw them. “Sometimes I’m too brave for my own good but now I know it is better to stick to a gameplan.” Khan suffered suspected fractures to both hands during the fight and will get them checked out in the coming days.
Sublime Schwartzel wins by 12 By Michael Todt
The South African took his second win in a week as he dazzled his home crowd at the Dunhill Championship
SOUTH Africa’s Charl Schwartzel fired a final round 69 on home soil to claim an emphatic 12-stroke victory in the Alfred Dunhill Championship and seal his second win in a week on Sunday. The 28 year-old, who finished 24-under-par overall after his three-under round, had begun the day with a 10-shot advantage over Frenchman Gregory Bourdy and never looked in any danger as he reached the turn at level-par for his round. A two-hour delay for thunderstorms at the Leopard Creek Country Club followed, but the former US Masters champion returned
to the 10th hole and cruised to victory with three further birdies and no bogeys. Sweden’s Kristoffer Broberg ended up second. “I thought I started off well today and through the first six holes I had an opportunity on every hole,” Schwartzel told reporters. “I hit good putts that didn’t go in. Then the threeputt on eight put a stop to things and Gregory started to make some birdies. Then it got down to seven shots and that to me was as close as I wanted it to be. “I was happy to make that birdie on nine just to pull the momentum back in my favour, because seven shots around this course is catchable. After the rain delay we came back and I played some nice, solid golf
and put myself back in the driver’s seat.” Last week Schwartzel claimed an 11-stroke victory at the Thailand Golf Championship on the Asian Tour, his first win in 20 months, and he dazzled the crowds once again at home as he stormed clear of his rivals for the second week in succession. “This doesn’t happen often. You don’t see it happen often. For me it’s nice after last week,” Schwartzel added. “Last week I got that win by a big margin, and normally when you come back the next week it’s hard to put up the same show. “That’s pleasing and what I keep talking about is consistency. It’s back where I like it to be.”
AUSTRALIA removed Sri Lanka’s openers cheaply to leave the tourists clinging on at 65 for two and chasing an imposing 393 runs for victory at the close of play on the fourth day of the first Test yesterday. There was bad news for the hosts on the injury front, however, with skipper Michael Clarke retiring hurt after smashing 57 runs off 46 balls to help drive his side to 278 in their second innings. Coach Mickey Arthur said the 31-year-old, the highest run scorer in Test cricket this year with 1,489, had suffered a hamstring injury but would play on in Hobart even if he might miss the second Test in Melbourne. “I think you’ll have to cut Michael’s leg off from him not to be out there,” he told reporters. “He certainly wants to marshal the troops and I think he certainly wants to be there if hopefully sometime tomorrow we can clinch a win.” Sri Lanka were dismissed for 336 on Sunday in reply to Australia’s first innings 450 for five declared and will need to set a new record for a fourth innings run chase at Hobart to beat the 369 Australia scored against Pakistan in 1999. “Surely in 90-odd overs there’s eight balls that have got wickets on them?” Arthur added. “I’ve got full confidence that we’ve got an attack that has the ability to get those eight wickets tomorrow.” At stumps, Sri Lanka’s hopes were in the experienced hands of Kumar Sangakkara (18 not out) and skipper Mahela Jayawardene, who took 25 balls to get off the mark and was unbeaten on five. Spinner Rangana Herath, who took five for 95 to mop up Australia’s tail, said the Sri Lankans were still going for a win despite the enormity of their task. “If we can bat through the first session without losing a wicket, it’s going to be a good game,” he told reporters. “It’s just an up-anddown track. It’s going to be an interesting day.” While the Sri Lankan bowlers had to wait for their reward after being frustrated by the hosts’ openers for much of the morning, their Australian counterparts made a more immediate impact. Shane Watson, taking on a bigger bowling burden after Sunday’s side injury to quick Ben Hilfenhaus, struck with his first ball to remove Tillakaratne Dilshan, who made 147 in the first innings, caught behind for 11. Dimuth Karunaratne had put 30 runs on the board when he also fell victim to a superb delivery - a sizzling Mitchell Starc yorker which hammered into the base of the off-stump.

Sport PSG beat Lyon to go top in France
Leaders Barca thrash Atletico to go nine clear
By Gregory Blachier
Champions Real Madrid stumble again By Mark Elkington LEADERS Barcelona struck a potentially decisive blow in the La Liga title race when Lionel Messi scored twice in a 4-1 win at home to secondplaced Atletico Madrid to move nine points clear at the top on Sunday. The victory moved Barca 13 points ahead of ailing champions Real Madrid, who were surprisingly held to a 2-2 draw at home by lowly Espanyol. Tito Vilanova’s unbeaten leaders fought back after Radamel Falcao gave Atletico a deserved lead. A magnificent strike from Adriano levelled the scores, and Sergio Busquets and a secondhalf brace from Messi completed the scoring. Barca have 46 points from 16 games, Atletico have 37 and Real 33. “You can’t say the league is over,” Real midfielder Xabi Alonso told Spanish television after their earlier game. “We will continue fighting, it will be tough, but we will carry on.” Atletico made an impressive start, causing problems on the break, and after twice going close, Colombia striker Falcao put the visitors ahead in the 32nd
minute with his 17th of the campaign. Diego Costa stole the ball off Messi and fed Falcao who sped away and cleverly lobbed the advancing Victor Valdes. Five minutes later, Barca were back in the game thanks to a thunderous shot from Adriano, who cut in from the right flank and fired in off the underside of the crossbar. Atletico were struggling to break out of the area before halftime, and when they failed to clear a corner, Busquets calmly stroked home the second. After the break, Messi slotted a third into the corner and then pounced on an error at the end for his 25th in La Liga and 90th for club and country in 2012. Espanyol substitute Juan Albin stunned Real with an 88th-minute equaliser as the Barcelona-based side grabbed an unlikely draw at the Bernabeu. The Uruguayan forward bundled the ball in after Real failed to clear a corner, and whistles rang around the ground as the teams filed off the pitch at the end. Karim Benzema was left in the stands with an ankle injury, and Cristiano Ronaldo started in the centre-
forward position, but for all their possession Real struggled in the first half. Visiting striker Sergio Garcia, a Euro 2008 winner with Spain, sprinted clear to net past Iker Casillas in the 31st minute. Luka Modric crashed a shot against the post, but just as the Bernabeu was getting restless Sami Khedira crossed and Ronaldo stuck out a foot to level in the 45th minute. Ronaldo’s reverse pass picked out Fabio Coentrao’s driving run, and the Portugal defender put Real ahead with his first league goal for the club, soon after the restart. A fingertip save and the woodwork prevented a quick third for Real, but Espanyol continued to threaten and Albin made them pay for failing to finish off the job. Earlier, Rayo Vallecano scored a late penalty to spoil Ernesto Valverde’s home debut as Valencia coach, with a surprise 1-0 victory. Valverde was brought in as a replacement for the sacked Mauricio Pellegrino two weeks ago and has overseen victories away at Osasuna in the league and in the King’s Cup, but his side offered little for the demanding Mestalla crowd.

Juventus extend lead while Napoli stunned at home By Brian Homewood
Italian champions Juve brushed Atalanta aside 3-0
JUVENTUS extended their Serie A lead with an embarrassingly easy 3-0 home win over Atalanta on Sunday while rivals Napoli blew their chance to go second with a dramatic late collapse at home to Bologna. Napoli appeared set to overtake Inter Milan when Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani put them 2-1 ahead in the 70th minute with his 12th goal of the league season. Instead, Panagiotis Kone levelled with one of the goals of the season in the 86th minute, meeting a cross with an acrobatic volley from just inside the penalty area. Napoli’s stunned coach Walter Mazzarri was still absorbing that blow when Daniele Portanova got in front of the defence to head another in the 89th minute and give Bologna a 3-2 away win which kept their opponents third with 33 points. Manolo Gabbiandini had given Bologna a 10th minute
lead and Alessandro Gamberini levelled from close range five minutes after halftime. Atalanta, who have beaten Napoli and Inter Milan this season, trailed by three goals and were reduced to 10 men after barely more than half an hour at the Juventus Stadium. Andrea Pirlo’s goal from a curling, dipping free kick was the highlight of Juve’s win as the titleholders went seven points clear of secondplaced Inter Milan, who lost at Lazio in fourth on Saturday. Mirko Vucinic set Juve on their way in the second minute and Claudio Marchisio scored the third as defending champions Juventus moved on to 41 points after their 13th win in 17 league games. AC Milan were given a helping hand on their way to a 4-1 win over lowly Pescara, who gave away two own goals, while Luca Toni scored twice as Fiorentina in fifth produced another impressive performance to
beat bottom club Siena by the same score. “There’s still a long way to go, we want to keep playing a key part in the championship, Coppa Italia and Champions League,” said Juventus coach Antonio Conte. “The only way to do so is to keep working hard.” Juve’s Montenegro forward Vucinic side-footed the ball past Andrea Consigli after less than two minutes, and the match could have taken a different course if German Denis had levelled shortly afterwards. Instead, Gianluigi Buffon saved the Argentine’s effort and Pirlo extended Juve’s lead in the 14th minute with a 25-metre free kick, the bearded playmaker’s fourth goal of the season. It was a no-contest after that with Marchisio adding the third from a long-range effort in the 27th minute. Atalanta’s misery was complete when Thomas Manfredini collected two yellow cards in as many minutes and was sent off just after the half hour.
BLAISE Matuidi’s first-half goal helped Paris St Germain snatch the Ligue 1 top spot as the capital side beat title rivals Lyon 1-0 at home on Sunday. France’s Matuidi headed home a Zlatan Ibrahimovic cross following a quick counter-attack on the stroke of halftime to send PSG level with Lyon on 35 points but top on goal difference. Lyon only threatened PSG when a Lisandro Lopez volley hit the post in the 27th minute and the big-spenders deserved their victory, proving much stronger than the visitors. “Lisandro’s chance could have changed the match but then we played at a very, very high level in the second half,” PSG right back Christophe Jallet told French channel Canal+. “You don’t have to get overexcited when everything is fine nor be depressed when you have bad times. All the squad just enjoy being first.” Lyon’s Michel Bastos confirmed PSG’s superiority but said his side would not surrender in the title race. “It’s a long way to go in the league. We know who the favourites are but we will try to fight until the end,” the Brazilian winger said. Both sides are level on points with third-placed Marseille, who won 1-0 at Toulouse on Saturday. The trio have a five-point lead over Lorient, who outclassed hosts St Etienne to clinch a 2-0 victory to climb up to fourth. At Parc des Princes, Lyon had the early possession but the first attempt on target was for PSG’s Javier Pastore, whose shoot from close range in the 12th minute was parried away by Remy Vercoutre. Lisandro Lopez went closer to scoring when he struck the post, without knowing at the time it was to be his side’s only clear-cut chance throughout. Thiago Silva was perfectly marshalling the home defence and Matuidi kept harassing the midfielders. PSG eventually broke the deadlock when Ibrahimovic, who had been quiet, set up Matuidi for the opener just before the break. The Swede, who has scored 17 and set up four of PSG’s 33 league goals so far, could have doubled the lead a minute later but Vercoutre denied him. The visiting goalkeeper then had to produce a solid performance in a one-sided second half. The 32-yearold saved Pastore’s superb strike in the 65th minute. He then won a one-to-one against Ezequiel Lavezzi nine minutes from time but his team mates never managed to really push for an equaliser.

Sport FLASHPOINT AS MICHU FLOORED AND OFFICIALS DON’T STOP PLAY
Happy Anorthosis maintain four-point lead in Cyprus By Nemanja Bjedov
Ouch! Swansea striker Michu lies motionless on the pitch after a late aerial collision with Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris
Laudrup angry after loss By Mark Bryans SWANSEA boss Michael Laudrup hit out at the officials following his side’s 1-0 defeat at Tottenham on Sunday. A second-half goal from Jan Vertonghen was enough to beat a Swansea side who came to White Hart Lane looking to keep things tight at the back. But there was a major flashpoint towards the end of the game when Swansea forward Michu was floored following an aerial challenge with Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Referee Mike Dean allowed play to continue with Michu lying prone inside the Spurs area as Andros Townsend almost scored a second for the hosts, with both benches arguing on the touchline. Laudrup conceded that the challenge was a fair one but was initially worried about the way Michu had fallen to the ground. “Fortunately he is OK,” he said. “When I saw it I
thought ‘Oh hell, he is unconscious, you can’t fake a reaction like that’ - it isn’t like when someone kicks you, this is completely different.” Laudrup was angry with the decision from Dean and his officials not to call a halt to proceedings to allow Michu to receive immediate medical attention and believes they should have communicated among themselves to come to the right decision. He said: “I was very angry and it wasn’t because it wasn’t a free-kick or a red card for Lloris or a penalty or whatever but we always talk about people, there is a debate, should we kick the ball out. “It is the same debate in every country - we have a referee and two linesmen so we just go on until the referee blows the whistle. “But with possible head injuries, like this one, there is no doubt, you have all the linesmen and the referee and they are connected. “I watched it afterward on
the television and when it happened, when Michu is going down to the ground the referee is watching them, the linesman is watching them and still they let the game go on, it is such a poor decision and dangerous as well.” Swansea defender Chico reacted angrily and approached a number of Spurs players for continuing, with both home boss Andre Villas-Boas and substitute Jake Livermore running onto the pitch. Laudrup revealed a mix-up was the cause of the reaction of the Spurs bench. “In the beginning I think some from the Tottenham bench thought we wanted a red card or a penalty or whatever, but that is not the issue we just wanted him to stop the game,” he said. Villas-Boas agreed with Laudrup that the game should have been halted, and was more concerned with Michu’s condition than his side wrapping up the game with a late goal. “On the incident I was ex-
pecting the referee to stop the game immediately,” he said. “It is a difficult decision for Mike because Townsend is running through on goal, but the health of a player is more important. We were trying for the game to stop immediately and I think all of the mess came as a consequence of that. Spurs held on for over eight minutes of added time to record a slim victory that sees them move back into the top four in the Barclays Premier League. Villas-Boas believes his players showed desire not to concede a late equaliser, with much made of their inability to keep out late goals. And the Portuguese revealed it was something the squad had been working on at the training ground. “I think if there was one team to win this game it was us,” he said. “We were very patient and persistent in what we were doing and kept moving the ball well. “We held on for the win.”
YIANNIS Okkas was back on target for Anorthosis after a three-game drought as the leaders swept aside AEP 2-0 at the Pafiako Stadium on Saturday afternoon to stay four points clear at the top of the table. “We are delighted with this victory. We played very well and I am more than happy with the way we started the match. We created many chances, but failed to score. However, I was confident that the goals would come,” said Anorthosis coach Ronny Levy. After missing several chances in the first half, Anorthosis broke the deadlock through skipper Okkas, whose low header from Toni Calvo’s cross beat Manolo Reina in AEP’s goal. Barak Yitzhaki set up the final score with a simple tap in three minutes into injury time after a great chipped pass by Ricardo Laborde. “Once we scored early in the second half they opened up and started going forward. We managed to keep them out of our penalty area and eventually sealed the win with the second goal, which I think should have come much sooner,” Levy said. “I am pleased that we managed to keep playing in the same winning rhythm and if we continue to do so we have a bright future ahead,” concluded Levy.

Scoreless draw no bore for Baggies and Hammers Team By Mark Pangallo WEST Bromwich Albion and West Ham United’s scoreless draw on Sunday was not one for the purists but the delight expressed by both Premier League teams summed up their modest aims. West Ham defender James Collins was one who was particularly pleased with the point, telling the club website: “These are the most satisfying games to play in as a centre back.” An inspirational game it was not, but a well executed plan it was from Hammers boss Sam Allardyce. Struggling with a squad full
of injuries with the likes of Andy Carroll, Yossi Benayoun and Mohamed Diame all in the treatment room, it was an opportunity for consolidation for Allardyce who set his team up to sit deep and absorb West Brom’s pressure. Match statistics gave a clearer picture of proceedings as hosts West Brom had 10 shots out of 19 on target, while the visitors saw only two hit the mark. “When you pick up a point with seven of your first team missing that is very pleasing. The lads who went out there did us proud and picked up a precious point,” Allardyce told BBC Sport.
After suffering three successive defeats it was also a time for consolidation for Baggies manager Steve Clarke, who took plenty of positives away from the match. “We spoke before the game about how it was important for us to defend well today and aim for the clean sheet, which we got,” Clarke told West Brom’s website. “That’s good because we haven’t had a clean sheet for a little while. That is one positive aspect. “It does stop the run of defeats, which is another positive aspect. And it’s another point towards the total we’re trying to achieve.”
Both sides were happy with a point apiece
At the GSP Stadium in Nicosia, Aldo Adorno scored his 12th goal of the season to secure APOEL’s narrow 1-0 victory over Enosis Neon Paralimni. The Paraguayan striker scored the winner 13 minutes from time with a nicely measured shot from inside the area after a great through pass by Alexandros Tziolis. “We knew that we would have a difficult match for two reasons. The first was that we were coming into this game after losing to Anorthosis and the second was that we played against an in-form team,” said APOEL manager Ivan Jovanovic. In the first half we could not focus properly, but luckily we managed to stay on level terms,” Jovanovic added. “Adorno’s goal was very important. He has a chance of becoming top scorer this season, but more importantly his presence and record help us as a unit.” Elsewhere, on Saturday afternoon, Nea Salamina edged out Olympiakos Nicosia 3-2 with all five goals coming in an entertaining first half, while Omonia celebrated a convincing 3-0 victory over Ayia Napa away from home. On Sunday afternoon Ethnikos Achnas held Apollon Limassol to a 1-1 draw, while AEK and AEL both recorded 2-0 victories over Alki and Doxa Katokopia respectively.

T Dejected: Chelsea were ambushed by Brazil’s Corinthians 1-0 in Sunday’s Club World Cup final in Yokohama - the first European champs to lose the title match since 2006
Pressure mounts as Chelsea fritter away another trophy By Alastair Himmer LOSING one trophy could be regarded as misfortune but frittering away four in as many months is starting to look like carelessness of the highest order for Chelsea. Beaten in the Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup before becoming the first holders eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage, Chelsea were ambushed by Corinthians 1-0 in Sunday’s Club World Cup final in Yokohama. The London club are also 13 points off the pace in the Premier League. Losing in Japan stung. “It’s a long way to come to lose,” Frank Lampard told reporters after a final Chelsea dominated for the first hour before tiring. “We didn’t take our chances and we gave them a goal. This tournament was meaningful for us from the minute we for here. It is a big disappointment.” A fortuitous winner, headed home by Paolo Guerrero in the 69th minute after the ball had looped up off Gary Cahill’s boot, gave Corinthians the title. Chelsea’s players slumped to the turf at the final whistle, Brazilian defender David Luiz in tears and having to be consoled by team mates. The resurgence of striker Fernando Torres, who had scored five goals in his previous three games - against Nordsjaelland, Sunderland and Monterrey - was put into sharp perspective. “You have to try and find positives,” said interim coach Rafael Benitez, whose side play at Leeds United in the League Cup tomorrow after a 6,000-mile flight back to London. “Fernando had the chances. He scored a goal that was disallowed. He has to take these chances in a final because it’s not easy to create too many in games like this. By the time Cahill was sent off in the 90th minute after kicking out at Emerson in
retaliation for an elbow in the face, Chelsea’s players look dead on their feet. “I’m just blown away,” said Corinthians goalkeeper Cassio, named player of the tournament. “We knew about Chelsea’s quality but we stuck together. This title is for all of South America.” An estimated 20,000 Corinthians fans made the trip to the Far East, creating a carnival atmosphere in the final watched by 68,000 at Nissan Stadium. “I want to dedicate this title to our passionate fans,” Corinthians coach Tite said. “They were in our hearts.” Chelsea have to pick themselves up quickly to keep alive their fading hopes of catching Manchester United in the Premier League and prevent any more early cup exits. “We have to keep ourselves in the hunt,” said a dejected Lampard after Chelsea became the first European side to lose a Club World Cup final since 2006. “We have the Europa League, the FA Cup and the League Cup all coming and we really have to keep pushing on.” Benitez, an unpopular appointment among Chelsea fans because of the Spaniard’s time as Liverpool manager, made no excuses. “At the end of the day you can create but you have to score,” said Benitez, who will be hoping for reinforcements in attack in the January transfer window. Benitez can expect another hostile reception when Chelsea take on Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge this weekend, but for the Corinthians a ticker-tape parade in Sao Paulo awaits. “This was a real battle between the third world and the first world,” said defender Paulo Andre. “For our people, for our fans, who have a difficult life, it’s so important to show the world we can beat teams like this and that we can be the best in the world - just once.”
EAM director Andy Flower believes his England side have done the country proud after sealing a rare series victory in India. Needing just a draw to claim a 2-1 win and their first series success in India for nearly 28 years, Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell both struck centuries as England safely negotiated the final day’s play in Nagpur yesterday. Flower took particular satisfaction from the fact his side learnt from their mistakes after losing the first Test, although he warned them against complacency in the future. “They’ve really done themselves proud here and their country proud,” he told Sky Sports 1. “To come out here and show that they’ve learnt things is one of the special things about this victory. “They’ve learnt how to play spin a lot better, obviously not the finished article but they’ve learnt how to play spin a lot better, they’ve learnt how to take 20 wickets in these conditions and they’ve learnt how to be resilient in foreign conditions. “I think those are all things they can be very proud of.” A nine-wicket humbling in Ahmedabad led to much derision from the media that England could not play spin in the sub-continent, following on from their 3-0 loss against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates earlier this year. But Flower was rewarded for his patience with the batsmen as England charged back with victories in Mumbai and Kolkata. “It’s nice for that faith to be repaid,” he added. sta“That is a testament to some off their humility and o their maturity to continue their learning into this phase of their career.” aAlastair Cook sapevoured a “very special” series win. aid: The captain said: cial “It’s a very special een day for us, it’s been a special tour. ave “The bowlers have nd been brilliant and ve our batters have
That’s the way to do it: Ian Bell (above) and Jonathan Trott both hit centuries in a stand of 208 as England batted out the day for a famous series win contributed big runs. Everyone in the squad can be very proud, especially after Ahmedabad and that heavy defeat.” Opposite number Mahendra Singh Dhoni admitted India’s batting at times had let them down, but praised James Anderson, named man of the match after taking four for 81 in India’s first innings. “I think we struggled in the batting department but the difference be between the two bowling sides sid was James Anderson Anderson,” he said. “He bow bowled really well. H was testing He the batsman quite often.” The lifeless pitch in Nagpur attracted s some criticism a and Dhoni ackn knowledged it did not suit either side. “Th “There was not

much really for the fast bowlers or the spinners,” he added. “It was difficult to score runs but if you kept your head down it was difficult to get the batsmen out.” Even after Anderson prevented India taking a firstinnings lead, there were some concerns for England at 94 for three before Trott and Bell put on 208. Bell’s hundred was his first in Tests this year and salvaged a poor personal tour which started with a dismal golden duck in Ahmedabad before he missed the second Test for the birth of his first child. He said: “It’s been a tricky tour so it’s nice to finish on a high and nice to contribute today. Up to now I only had a run-out so it was nice to get some with the bat as well.”
