EAC insurers seek to recover payouts Hush-hush legal opinion by AG finds state culpable for Mari civil damages By Elias Hazou
T
HE GOVERNMENT is mulling a deal with the insurers of the Vassilikos power plant that would allow the latter to recover from the state €200 million they’ve paid out for damage to the insured part of the facility. Sources tell the Mail that an understanding was reached between the parties late last month during the course of a number of meetings involving the Finance Minister and the insurers of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC). In close proximity to the Mari naval base, the Vassilikos plant – the island’s main power station – suffered extensive damage during the July 11 2011 blast, leading to rolling power cuts island-wide for around a month. The plant’s insurers and re-insurers have agreed to compensate the EAC to the full insurable amount and have to date paid the power utility an undisclosed amount of monies for ongoing repairs. But, the Mail under-
stands, they intend to recover their cash payouts by in turn claiming compensation from the Cypriot state. According to the same sources, the basis for their claim derives from a legal reasoning issued earlier by the Attorney-general. It stated that the government is liable for civil damages for the Mari blast, for two chief reasons: first, because the naval base is a government facility and lies on government land; and second, the munitions stored at the base were under the government’s responsibility. In his reasoning – kept from the public eye – the AG noted also that it would be very difficult for the government to evade civil liabilities for Mari, the same sources said. In a sense, the government is already facing criminal liability for Mari, with the Attorney-general’s office having prosecuted ministers and military officials for the munitions explosion that left 13 people dead. The sources say the Finance Minister has

Ten-year-old boy was abducted and raped in Larnaca POLICE are looking for a man who raped a ten-year-old boy on Wednesday evening. The Palestinian boy is being treated in hospital and is in a state of shock, having had to walk from the scene of the rape, along Philikoudes to the Larnaca police headquarters at the end of the seafront. The Cyprus Mail was told that the boy was some distance away from his home
on his bike at around 9pm on Wednesday when a Greek-speaking man on a motorbike stopped him and his friend saying he wanted to show them his dog. The boy was reluctant to go with the man, who forced him to get on the bike however. The man then brought the boy to a rooftop and raped him there under the threat of a knife. The ten-year-old subsequently walked to the police station
and told officers what had happened to him. They police called his parents and then took his statement, which was corroborated after an examination from a state pathologist. The pathologist said he would not make any more comments because the rape involves a child and the contents of such cases are protected during closeddoor court hearings.

STANDARD & Poor’s Ratings Services yesterday cut Cyprus’ long-term sovereign bond rating a notch further into junk territory – to ‘BB’ from ‘BB+ – saying that despite an international bailout, the government would remain in a weak fiscal position due to a banking system, which has been unable to cope without state support as a result of its exposure to Greece. S&P also placed the island’s longterm rating on CreditWatch with negative implications. The agency estimates that Cyprus’ bailout will reach €11 billion – just over 60 per cent of GDP -- to recapitalise its banks, absorb further bank losses, and meet 2012-2014 borrowing requirements. About €6.6 billion or
36 per cent will be absorbed by the state to cover maturing debt and underlying deficits during 2012-2014, S&P said. The company expects Cyprus’ real GDP growth to contract by 1.5 per cent this year and, at best, to stagnate during 2013. These estimates are subject to the uncertainties inherent in projecting growth trends in small economies, it said. “While we believe that lending rates from the troika (or from bilateral sources such as the Russian government) will be relatively low, we expect that the increased burden of financing a gross general government debt stock of 108 per cent of GDP, and the expected continuation of budgetary cuts will weigh significantly on Cyprus’ near-term growth prospects. This drag will come over
and above the negative impact on domestic demand from financial sector deleveraging.” S&P said it expected Cyprus’ lenders to impose “significant” conditions on their loans, in line with recent European Commission stability programme proposals. The most contentious discussions will centre on public sector wage cuts, changes to, or even the abolition of the automatic wage indexation mechanism, and potential modifications to Cyprus’ advantageous tax environment, the firm said. “Should the government implement the conditionality fully, the implications would likely be positive for Cyprus’ creditworthiness as these would aim to reform public finances and reduce large economic imbalances.”

The massive destruction at the Vassilikos power station caused by the naval base blast at Mari last year
If the cabinet does not agree, insurers may sue state (continued from front page) agreed to take the insurers’ €200 million proposal to the Cabinet, possibly next week. Should the administration not agree on an out-of-court settlement, the insurers would then presumably sue the government. The power plant (excluding combined cycle unit no.5) is insured with Cyprus-based Atlantic Insurance for up to €700 million. Under the terms of the contract between Atlantic and the EAC, the insurers (and re-insurers) are obligated to “reinstate the facility as new.” Atlantic is backed up by around 10 re-insurers, including Ace
European Group, Trust Re and Lloyd’s Syndicates A senior executive with Atlantic confirmed yesterday a series of meetings have been held between government officials and insurers over the past few weeks; he declined further comment. EAC general manager Stelios Stylianou was similarly reticent. But he did say that, from his understanding, the insurers view the Cyprus government as responsible for damage to Vassilikos and as such they are “considering” claiming compensation. “They (insurance firms) have said they will honour their contract with the EAC, but that they also
reserve the right to make claims on the government. It’s a possibility,” Stylianou said. There’s also the matter of the estimated €200 million worth of damage to Vassilikos that was uninsured. The EAC is likewise entitled to apply to the government for compensation for damage to its power plant, again based on the Attorney-general’s legal reasoning. Asked specifically about this, Stylianou did not rule it out, adding: “All scenarios are being discussed. It is up to the board of the EAC to decide how to claim uninsured losses.” If the government does not pay up, this matter
could also end up in court. Asked what would happen if the EAC asks for but does not get this compensation from the government, Stylianou said: “That would be a problem. Of course, hypothetically speaking always, we would try our utmost to reach an amicable settlement.” It is no secret that the power utility faces major cash-flow problems. If the out-of-court compensation figures are borne out, that would bring the total to some €400million. Assuming the government forks out at the end of the day that’s an additional €400 million expense for state coffers and, ultimately, the taxpayer.

Malas: some hospital overtime not justified
Oman’s Qaboos bin Said al Said: very generous
‘Officers failed to declare Sultan’s expensive gifts’ By Jacqueline Agathocleous THE POLICE chief has ordered an investigation into information that officers at Larnaca airport accepted money and gifts from the Sultan of Oman, during his visit to the island last month without declaring them. According to reports, Qaboos bin Said al Said wrote out a cheque for several thousand euros for airport police, while higher-ranking officers lso received Rolex watches. Regulations state that when members of the public service are offered a gift on duty, this has to be declared to the finance ministry, which then decides – depending on the value of the gift – whether or not they can keep it. Police spokesman Andreas Angelides yesterday said there were specific orders within the force, saying policemen can receive gifts as long as they declare them to their district chief or the police chief – unless the presents are given at seminars or other events were the gifts have little value. “The Police Chief has ordered an investigation
to see if the information is indeed true, and if any disciplinary offences are justified,” Angelides said yesterday. “We will see the result of the investigation.” Politis newspaper yesterday cited “credible sources” reporting that the Sultan was so pleased with the services offered to him and his delegation during his visit, he got an associate to hand over a cheque worth several thousand euros just for the policemen. However, the paper claimed the cheque wasn’t shared out equally, which led to conflict among the policemen present. The high-ranking officers were also reportedly given Rolex watches, with the Sultan’s emblem on them, while other airport workers present at the time also received gifts. Qaboos bin Said Al Said rose to power after overthrowing his father, Said bin Taimur, in a palace coup in 1970. His aim was to end the country’s isolation and use its oil revenue for modernisation and development. The 72year-old sultan is well known for his generosity.
Cypriots still heaviest smokers in the EU CYPRIOTS are the heaviest smokers in the EU puffing 20.5 cigarettes daily, according to a survey conducted as part of the European Commission’s campaign ‘Ex-smokers are unstoppable.’ According to the survey – conducted by iCoach, a digital health platform aimed at helping smokers kick the habit - only one in ten Cypriot smokers have given up smoking, since 2011, and those who still smoked, consumed the highest number of cigarettes in the EU at 20.5 cigarettes daily. However, most smokers in Europe - 46 per cent - consume 1120 cigarettes daily, with the EU average amounting to 14.2 cigarettes daily. Cyprus was also ranked eighth among European countries, with 30 per cent of its population currently smoking. Ranking first was Greece at 40 per cent and last was Sweden at 13 per cent. The digital tool for quitting is available online for free in 23 languages including Greek. It has no time limitation so users can progress at their own pace until they manage to quit. It also offers users interactive functions such as a daily diary, useful advice, access to forums, but also mini tests that give both encouragement and a better insight into their progress. Through the programme over 217,000 Europeans, aged between 25 and 34, have sought help to quit, with studies showing that iCoach is mainly used by men at 56 per cent. The same is true for Cyprus where most of the registrations are by men at 69 per cent. Seven countries however, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, report a majority of women registering. Minister tries to play down series of reported abuses By Jacqueline Agathocleous HEALTH Minister Stavros Malas yesterday said he was close to reaching a new model for state doctors’ overtime, after fresh reports of milking the system emerged. The reports referred to an investigation by the ministry into the overtime hours worked in public hospitals. They claimed, among others, the overtime worked in the accidents and emergency units was disproportionately high, that the number of surgeries performed during overtime hours was high even as waiting lists continued to rise, and that the intensive care units in the smaller hospitals demanded more in overtime than those of bigger ones. “We have been considering this matter for a while now, reaching an initial agreement to conclude discussions on a model which is mutually acceptable and effective,” Malas said yesterday. He added that a meeting would soon be held with government doctors’ union PASYKI and public servants’ umbrella union PASYDY to conclude on a final model. The minister contradicted reports that the investigation showed that 30 per cent of the overtime paid could have been saved with small alterations to the system. “I am not sure if we have concluded on the percentage of any reduction as reports are claiming,” said Malas. Phileleftheros newspaper said doctors at Paphos’ hospital were paid the same in overtime as those of Limassol hospital, which is vastly bigger. But the minister said it was because the number of employees at Limassol was almost double that of Paphos. “There are also certain objective approaches that we need to be careful about,” said Malas. “What happens in Paphos hospital is that there are fewer doctors, and the fewer doctors are called to cover the needs of the hospital in the same amount of time. So the per capita overtime recorded in Paphos hospital, which has fewer doctors, will obviously be higher. We have 41 doctors in Paphos and 80 in Limassol. The per capita average cost [of overtime] for Limassol was €18,000 in 2010 and €15,000 in 2011, while in Paphos it was €25,000 and €23,000 respectively.” But he did admit his ministry had spotted certain instances where “the recordings of overtime could have been lower”.
There are many reports of more surgeries being carried out during ‘overtime’ periods However, how much lower it could have been will become evident with the course of time, said Malas. “We haven’t concluded that exploitation to the extent of 30 per cent is taking place,” he said. “This is something I can’t confirm and I don’t know where the paper got this study, because all I have in front of me is a simple comparative recording of the overtime hours worked in all the hospitals. If we conclude on a reduction and this reduction will be 30 per cent, this will emerge later.” Asked if he was denying there was a problem with doctors getting paid for excessive and unnecessary overtime hours, the minister said, “We need to be objective and not populist”. He said overtime needed to be separated into two categories: the doctors who work “on-call” and those who perform surgeries in overtime hours. Malas said there were certain units where the overtime re-
corded was a bit over the top. He mentioned heart surgeons at the Nicosia General Hospital but he said if the work they did was done in the private sector it would cost five times as much. “So we need to be realistic when we make comparisons in the overtime,” he said. He contradicted reports that the most overtime is paid to doctors. “The amounts paid in night-time benefits to nurses (in 2011) were around €18 million; for doctors, who follow the on-call system, it was around €6 million,” said Malas. The minister urged the public to be patient, as hospitals were under immense pressure. Regarding recent reports that a doctor at Nicosia’s Makarios Hospital had been scheduling unnecessary Caesareans over the weekends so he could get paid overtime, Malas said the investigation had only just started and the ministry was in the process of examining medical files and
questioning the parties involved. Meanwhile, DISY MP Stella Kyriakidou called on the minister to announce the findings of his investigation into the overtime hours to the public. “The issue concerning the immediate need to change doctors’ overtime system has not only been noted many times before, but it has also been repeatedly discussed at the House health committee,” said Kyriakidou, adding that it was also noted in the Auditor-general’s annual report every year. She said Malas himself had committed to change the current system six months ago. “Recently reports claimed there were increased numbers of Caesareans due to exploitation of the overtime system,” said Kyriakidou. “The health minister must immediately inform the public on the conclusions of the investigation he himself ordered and announce when the matter will be resolved.” (see editorial page 11)

Semi-state organisations are not an ‘AKEL-ocracy’ By Elias Hazou NO MAJOR changes marked yesterday’s appointment by the Cabinet of the new boards of semi-governmental organisations (NGOs) – but whether the appointees keep their jobs beyond next March is another matter. By and large, the postings at the 16 SGOs amounted to the re-appointment of existing board members. One of the main exceptions was the appointment of new people chairing the boards of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation and the Wine Products Council. The chairmen at the following SGO’s were re-appointed: Cyprus State Fairs Authority, Ports Authority, Cyprus Telecommunications Authority, Cyprus Sports Organisation,
Cabinet appoints some new board members but most stay the same Cyprus Land Development Corporation, Cyprus Tourism Organisation, Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, and Cyprus News Agency. But another battle for the SGOs – often described as dens of government nepotism – looms. In June, parliament passed a law – sponsored by main opposition DISY - limiting the term board members could serve to 30 months, with a possibility for a single reappointment. In addition, it stipulated that currently serving board members would be replaced in March 2013 – coinciding with the presidential elections. Currently, board members
serve 36-month terms. DISY argued the new arrangement would make it possible for an administration to work smoothly with SGOs that are appointed by it, without any remnants from previous boards who might be less than zealous in enforcing government policy. An administration’s term in office is five years, or 60 months. Under the DISY-inspired law, that would align perfectly with the 30-month term for SGO boards, times two. But the move drew an angry reaction from AKEL; the ruling party said DISY was manoeuvring to wrest total con-
trol of the SGOs should it win next year’s general elections. It said moreover that the new law would make it easier for DISY to achieve its longstanding ‘neo-liberal’ goal of ‘privatising’ and ‘selling out’ the SGOs. The President subsequently refused to sign the law, and has referred it to the Supreme Court. Speaking to newsmen after the Cabinet meeting ratifying the appointments, President Christofias dismissed the notion that so-called ‘AKEL-ocracy’ permeates the composition of the SGOs. However an apparent technical foul-up left the govern-
ment egg-faced yesterday. The lists of the new board members were released to reporters late in the afternoon. But in addition to this list, it appears that some media outlets were also sent the list of the previous boards. In one such list that Sigmalive got hold of, in addition to the names of the previous board members, the list identifies their political party affiliation – DISY, DIKO, EDEK, AKEL and so on. Moreover, the list of previous board members included comments next to some of the names. So, for example, one board member identified as an AKEL supporter is said to “not have shown interest for a long period of time, did not show up, but when needed he follows the party.” Other descriptions of persons included “positive,” “negative,” and “supportive.”
Co-ops resist changes to regulatory framework COOPERATIVE banks yesterday expressed their opposition to any changes in their regulatory framework, saying they implemented the same standards in place for commercial lenders. “…changing the institutional framework on which cooperative activity has been based, especially ideas to scrap the cooperative movement’s regulatory authority and auditing mechanisms, cannot be accepted,” a written statement said. “Besides, the cooperative credit sector implements corporate governance and the auditing standards are the same as the ones in the banking system.” The statement was issued after a meeting of cooperative officials who were briefed on the movement’s talks with the troika of international lenders. The issue of cooperative supervision was raised by the European Commission in its May 30 recommendations for the Cypriot econ-
omy. In its recommendation, the Commission does not appear to share the view of the cooperative movement. It says: “Harmonise the supervision of the cooperative credit societies in line with the standards applied for the commercial banks.” In its statement, the movement said it is a socioeconomic institution with “anthropocentric orientation” … “operating for more than 100 years on the basis of an institutional framework harmonised with international cooperative principles, the needs of Cypriot society, and the international obligations of the Cypriot state.” Its activity throughout time – especially the difficult periods – proved beneficial for the Cypriot economy and society in general, the statement said. “This is the reason why the Cypriot people put their trust in the cooperatives, raising them to the high level they are at.”
The issue of supervision was raised by the EU Commission in its Cyprus report

‘Bulk of provident funds are in good shape’ By Poly Pantelides AROUND 15 pension and provident funds may be facing liquidity problems but most have no short term funding problems, the head of the supervising authority for pension and provident funds Theophanis Tryfonos said yesterday. Tryfonos has asked the various funds for data on high risk securities’ investments. He said he had been looking at the ability of semigovernmental bodies’ and local authorities to cope with liquidity demands in the short term. “Unfortunately there is no regulation provided for funds with 100 or fewer members,” Tryfonos said referring to a different legal status between small and large funds. Out of over 1,800 in total, the majority – reportedly about 1,500 – are not regulated by law, however, Tryfonos said he has asked them to hand over data “on a consultancy basis”. He said that though 14 of the smaller funds had invested a significant proportion of their capital into high risk securities, they were “very small” and created especially for executive councils or partners in companies, “which the law allows for”. One bigger fund belonging to a commercial company also invested 70 per cent of its capital into securities, though Tryfonos said it was not clear if that was a problem. But he said that most the 210 funds that invested in securities at a collective nominal value of €180 million did not face liquidity problems “at least in the short term”. Tryfonos declined to name any funds, just as he had four years ago when one fund invested €4.0 million in Lehman Brothers, which later filed for bankruptcy. Reports at the time said that the semi-governmental telecommunications authority (CyTA) lost €600,000 in investments for its pension fund. A year earlier, in 2007, a high-profile stockbroker was jailed for seven years for stealing millions from a pension fund belonging to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. Collectively, around 15 semi-governmental funds have invested €73 million in high risk securities. But Tryfonos said that even though they were still analysing data it looked like “sensible management rules have been followed”. People can ask the executive body handling their fund to enumerate its investments, he said.

Home Police went too far with arrests, poker players say CYPRUS By Poly Pantelides
POLICE went too far when they charged members of the Cyprus Poker Association (CPA) with gambling when members were trying out for an international competition, the association’s vice president, Antonis Theophanides said yesterday at a news conference. Last month police raided two venues, in Larnaca and Limassol, charging a total of 31 people with gambling – which is illegal in Cyprus - even though three weeks earlier, the CPA wrote a letter to inform authorities of their legal status and their intention to host trials for a
national team. “The CPA and our members feel that the actions taken by the police were excessive… due to the fact that they had been previously invited,” Theophanides said. “It’s a shame” the CPA is not allowed to foster the sport even though the ‘TRNC’ gets to host a prestigious televised event, the World Tour Poker. Many go to the occupied areas to play poker whereas they would stay if they had a chance to play here,” he said. The CPA charges a membership fee and a tournament fee for the organisation but says that it does not condone gambling or give cash prizes.
One poker player, Cypriot Bambos Xanthos, is 2009 Heads-up poker champion “but Cyprus doesn’t know,” Theophanides said. “We wish to ensure that our sport is considered an honourable game of skill played by players who love the sport and wish to develop their skills and ability,” the CPA said in the letter sent to the chief of police and the Attorney-general, among others. The police, found about €1,200 in two separate events – an amount that the organisers say went towards membership and participation fees – which they mentioned in their letter beforehand. Police spokesman Andreas An-
gelides said that because there was money, there was gambling, adding that the even the chips sufficed, as they are a money equivalent. Bingo – a game of chance - is not considered gambling even though money changes hands. Angelides said it was allowed although the reasons why are not clear. Angelides said that “finding chips, playing cards and money is a sign of criminal activity”. Asked if that makes most Cypriots criminals for playing a game or two with money (or chips) during the Christmas season, Angelides said, “Yes, but the police can’t go to everyone’s homes and arrest them”.
‘As a good friend to both sides, Cyprus can help us’ Palestinian Authority FM says Cyprus EU presidency would be of great benefit By Stefanos Evripidou AS A good friend of both sides, Cyprus could help overcome the deadlock in the IsraeliPalestinian peace process during its EU Presidency, said Palestinian National Authority Foreign Minister Riad alMalki in Nicosia yesterday. Speaking after meeting his Cypriot counterpart Erato Kozakou Marcoullis, al-Malki said the fact Cyprus presides over the Council of the EU “is a great benefit and great opportunity for Palestine because Cyprus will try to do justice”. He expected progress to be made at an EU level during Cyprus’ EU Presidency. “Palestine is in good hands,” he added. “The fact that Cyprus is a good friend of Palestine and also a good friend of Israel really puts it in a better position to try to see if it is possible to lead the EU into looking for ideas to move the situation from a total deadlock to a new dynamic,” he told the Cyprus News Agency . The Palestinian Authority has “totally given up on the US role due to their internal election processes” while the Arab Spring is occupying the attention of other countries including in the Arab world, he said. “That really leaves us with the EU that has always been trying to play a leading role,”
said al-Malki. Speaking to reporters after their meeting, Marcoullis reiterated Cyprus’ support for a comprehensive approach to the Middle East peace process, which will lead to a two-state solution. “Such a solution would entail that the State of Israel will co-exist with an independent, contiguous and viable Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” she said. Marcoullis said a two-state solution must be the product of negotiations, and called for all international efforts to focus on containing the situation and restarting the process. The Cypriot minister condemned the settlement activity in the West Bank, noting its illegality under international law. Referring to the “historic bilateral relations between Cyprus and the Palestinian people”, she said: “Cyprus will continue being at the forefront and systematically support the rights of the Palestinian people in international fora and in the EU as a matter of principle”. On development cooperation, Cyprus has allocated around US $3 million to the Palestinian people since 2008. Regarding the changes taking place in the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa, he said the evolution towards openness, democratisation, accountability, the rule of law and social justice has

Car accident victim dies A 35 YEAR-OLD man, Dimitris Herodotou, has died in hospital after a car accident on Nicosia’s Athalassa Avenue on Wednesday. Although it is unclear what the circumstances of the accident were, it is known that the Nicosia resident had deviated from his course and swerved off the road into a group of trees, where his car overturned. He was rescued from the wreckage by the fire brigade and taken to hospital. Police urge the public to contact the Nicosia Traffic Police on 1460 if they have any information on the crash.
Riad al-Malki arriving at the presidential palace yesterday morphed into “a very narrow line of action that has reduced the outcome and the benefits into something marginal”. He noted concern about the possible spill-over effect of the Syrian conflict in the region: “This is not the ‘Arab Spring’ we were asking for.” “We are trying our best to help the Syrian people to overcome their problems and put an end to the conflict,” he said.
Asked about the Palestinian bid for non-member observer status at the UN, al-Malki said going to the UN was a last resort, after 20 years of direct negotiations with Israel delivered little progress but allowed Israel time to change realities on the ground. The ‘Follow Up’ Committee of the Arab League will meet in early September “to decide on the exact date when we are going to apply for non-mem-
(Christos Theodorides) ber state UN membership”, said the Palestinian minister. The draft resolution will be put to a vote before the UN General Assembly before the end of the year, he added. During his one-day visit, alMalki also met with President Demetris Christofias, House President Yiannakis Omirou, DISY leader Nicos Anastasiades and AKEL parliamentary representative Nicos Katsourides.
Residential property prices still falling RESIDENTIAL property prices in the first quarter of 2012 continued their downward trend, albeit at a slower rate, according to figures released by the Central Bank. In a residential property price index for Q1 of 2012, the CB warned that prospects for a recovery in the sector are bleak due to limited liquidity and the uncertainty created by the fiscal consolidation measures under discussion between Cyprus and the troika.
On a quarterly basis, property prices (both houses and apartments) in all districts showed a modest decline of 1 per cent. This was compared to 1.8 per cent in the previous quarter with the exception of Paphos and Famagusta, were prices declined by 3.1 per cent and 2.4 per cent, respectively. Year-on-year property prices dropped 4.3 per cent.

Putin tackles Cameron on Syria in judo diplomacy UK, Russia still divided on response to the crisis By Maria Golovnina and Guy Faulconbridge BLACK-belted Vladimir Putin locked horns on Thursday with British leader David Cameron over Syria and a crackdown on Kremlin opponents before watching Russia take gold in an afternoon of judo diplomacy at the Olympic Games. Putin, who had dispensed with his dark jacket in the heat of the final, shot to his feet, roaring cheers for the native of Dagestan, a tiny Muslim region of Russia’s southern flank, who took the gold medal in a men’s judo final. The former KGB spy then rushed down to the mats to congratulate Tagir Khaibulaev, embracing him with a Russian bear hug and then posing for photographs while Russians, one even dressed in a white fur hat, waved the

Kofi Annan to step down as Syria peace envoy FORMER U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan is quitting as international peace envoy for Syria, frustrated by “finger-pointing” at the United Nations while the armed rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad becomes increasingly bloody. As battles raged yesterday in Syria’s second city Aleppo between rebel fighters and government forces using war planes and artillery, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced in New York that Annan had said he would go at the end of the month. “Kofi Annan deserves our profound admiration for the selfless way in which he has put his formidable skills and prestige to this most difficult and potentially thankless of assignments,” Ban said. Talks were under way to find a successor. Annan’s mission, centred on an April

THREE people linked to al Qaeda have been arrested in the south of Spain, one in possession of explosives they planned to use in attacks in either the Iberian country or other European nations, Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said yesterday. He said police arrested on Wednesday two al Qaeda members from ex-Soviet republics close to Ciudad Real who were likely heading to France, and a Turkish man near Cadiz whose house was searched and where explosives were found. The minister said one of the two arrested near Ciudad Real was a senior al Qaeda operative who had extensive experience in bomb-making. “It is one of the most important operations against al Qaeda to date to be carried out on an international level,” he said. “There are clear indications that the suspects arrested could have been planning an attack in Spain, and or, other European countries,” the minister told a news conference. He said the operation was conducted with the help of other international police forces, and that the explosive material was being analysed. No details were given on how much material was found.

ceasefire that never took hold, has looked irrelevant as fighting has intensified in Damascus, Aleppo and elsewhere. Annan blamed “finger-pointing and namecalling” at the UN Security Council for his decision to quit, but noted: “the world is full of crazy people like me. So don’t be surprised if Secretary General Ban Ki-moon can find someone who can do a better job than me”. Syria expressed regret Annan was going. Russia, a key ally of Damascus, also said it regretted the decision, while Britain, which wants Assad to resign, said it showed that the mediation process was not working. The White House said Annan’s decision to quit had highlighted Assad’s failure to meet his promise to abide by the ceasefire plan, and added that it continued to believe that “Assad must go”.

Riot, whose members are on trial in Moscow for anti-Putin lyrics, with the Russian president as part of wider talks on human rights. In a stark illustration of the still frosty ties between Britain and Russia, Putin used his stretched, Russian-numberplated black Mercedes limousine while Cameron used his armoured grey Jaguar to leave Downing Street. A one-time judo champion in his native city of St Petersburg, Putin talked animatedly with Cameron through a translator at the Games, and appeared to be explaining judo to the prime minister at times. The 59-year-old Kremlin chief’s last visit to London was in 2003, though he attended the Group of Eight summit in 2005 at Gleneagles in Scotland. Putin is facing criticism in Moscow for trying to silence dissent after members of Pussy Riot went on trial and a prominent opposition blogger, Alexei Navalny, was charged with embezzlement. As Putin entered the prime minister’s office in central London, one protester screamed: “Free Pussy Riot”, which echoed across Downing Street, in reference to the band who sang out an anti-Putin punk prayer in Moscow’s main cathedral.

FIELD Marshal Hussein Tantawi kept his post as Egyptian defence minister in a Muslim Brotherhood-led administration sworn in yesterday by President Mohamed Mursi, confirming the military’s role at the epicentre of power. Tantawi’s inclusion in Prime Minister Hisham Kandil’s cabinet was widely expected, but underlined the emerging power balance between a civilian president from a once-banned Islamist group and the generals who removed Hosni Mubarak from power. “Do we start from zero? For sure, no,” Kandil said during a news conference. “There has been serious and dedicated work in the past period by previous governments that we must build on.” Besides its inclusion of Tantawi - Mubarak’s defence minister for two decades - the new administration drew heavily on senior level bureaucrats who ran government in Mubarak’s days. Outgoing Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri was even named an advisor to Mursi. The inclusion of at least four members of the Muslim Brotherhood represented a notable break with the past however. One was appointed as information minister, putting the group in charge of a powerful institution that oversees Egyptian state television. “We are confronted by a continuation of the system of government of Hosni Mubarak, with new faces from the second and third tier of the bureaucracy, and some members of the Muslim Brotherhood,” said Nabil Abdel Fattah, a political analyst. “It reflects the strength of the bureaucracy and military,” he said.

Kelly’s bones to return to descendants THE skeleton of Australia’s most notorious criminal will finally be returned to his descendants 132 years after he was executed, ending the family’s long quest to find and properly bury the remains of a man many Australians now consider a folk hero. Ned Kelly led a gang of bank robbers in Australia’s southern Victoria state before he was hanged in 1880. The whereabouts of his corpse was long unknown, but forensic scientists identified Kelly’s nearly headless skeleton last year after it was found in a mass grave outside a now-closed prison. Most of Kelly’s skull, which was stolen long ago, is still missing, but the identification of the skeleton was followed by a battle over what to do with his bones. The property developer of the former Pentridge Prison site where Kelly’s skeleton was buried had hoped to keep the remains on the grounds. Kelly’s descend-
WORLD TODAY Comedian shot by militants A POPULAR Somali comedian and playwright who mocked Islamist militants for brainwashing children and killing civilians has been shot dead. The 43-year-old TV and radio comedian Abdi Jeylani Malaq, was killed on Tuesday by two young men near his Mogadishu home. Abdi Muridi Dhere, a colleague, said Malaq’s death is heartbreaking. He said the killing has sent Mogadishu back to the “dark days.” Seven journalists have been killed in Somalia this year in what appear to be targeted killings. Dhere says the government needs to provide better security.
Food aid call for North Korea NORTH Korea needs immediate food assistance after heavy rains killed scores of people and submerged vast swaths of farmland. That assessment was released by the UN resident co-ordinator’s office in Pyongyang following visits to flood-stricken areas in North Korea earlier this week. Floods caused by two storm systems last month killed at least 119 people and left tens of thousands homeless, according to the North’s state media.

ants wanted the skeleton so they could have a private burial. Victoria Attorney General Robert Clark said the remains would be turned over to Kelly’s family. Ellen Hollow, great-granddaughter of Ned Kelly’s sister Kate Kelly, welcomed the decision. “The Kelly family will now make arrangements for Ned’s final burial,” She said in a statement. “We also appeal to the person who has the skull in their possession to return it to (forensic officials), so that when the time comes for Ned to be laid to rest his remains can be complete.” Leigh Chiavaroli, the developer of the Pentridge site, declined to comment on the government’s decision. Kelly, whose father was an Irish convict, led a gang that robbed banks and killed policemen from 1878-80. These days, many Australians view him as a Robin
Hood-like character who fought the British colonial authorities and championed the rural Irish underclass. Others dismiss him as a cold-blooded cop killer. After Kelly was executed, his body was buried in an unmarked grave outside a former prison called the Old Melbourne Gaol. But officials decided to exhume his remains along with those of other executed convicts in 1929 when the jail closed. The plan was to move the skeletons to the nearby Pentridge Prison, but a mob of onlookers stole some of the remains - including what was believed to be Kelly’s skull - during the exhumation. The skull was later recovered and put on display at the Old Melbourne Gaol, now a historic site. But in 1978, it was stolen again. In 2009, a farmer handed the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine a skull he claimed was Kelly’s. Forensic tests determined it was not.

Afghanistan forces thwart insurgent attack on Kabul Authorities say mass attack prevented; intelligence points to Haqqani By Mirwais Harooni AFGHAN security forces killed five insurgents and wounded one during a predawn raid in Kabul yesterday, with authorities saying they had thwarted a mass attack and captured intelligence pointing to the militant Haqqani network. Soldiers from Afghanistan’s spy agency, the National Directorate of Security (NDS), launched the raid just after midnight, entering a singlestory house compound on the fringes of Kabul which the insurgents were using as a base. “They planned mass attacks in different parts of Kabul disguised in burqas,” the NDS said in a statement, referring to the head-to-toe covering worn by many Afghan women and sometimes used by insurgents to evade detection. Police said two insurgents escaped during a gun battle that raged for five hours around the isolated compound, where the insurgents had been amassing weapons in a newly-built brick house. The militants had three vehicles loaded with explosives and suicide-bomb vests, as well as large stores of rocketpropelled grenades and automatic weapons, and planned to occupy a high-rise building to attack the city’s business heart. The Taliban issued a statement denying that Thursday’s operation had targeted their fighters, although the insurgents often play down their defeats and in-
An Afghan National Army soldier keeps watch near the site of the raid in Kabul yesterday flate successes. The NDS said target maps and telephone numbers recovered from the compound had numbers for the Haqqani network based outside Afghanistan. Haqqani network militants, allied with the Taliban and largely based in northwest Pakistan’s lawless border lands, have been blamed by NATOled forces in Afghanistan for
several high profile attacks in recent months. Dozens of militants launched a coordinated assault in central Kabul on April 15, occupying a high-rise construction site and pounding the city’s diplomatic and government centre with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire in an attack that took 18 hours to quell. On June 22, Afghan secu-
rity forces backed by foreign advisers fought a day-long battle with insurgents after a Taliban attack on a lakeside hotel on Kabul’s outskirts. But security forces and NATO-led foreign troops say the sporadic attacks do not point to weaknesses in Afghan forces and intelligence ahead of a withdrawal by most foreign combat troops to be completed by 2014.
The United States is pressing Pakistan to step up its efforts to root out militants, in particular the Haqqanis. Pakistan has strong traditional links with the Afghan Taliban and other militant groups but it denies accusations it uses them as proxies to gain leverage in Afghanistan ahead of any settlement to the war, or in case a civil war breaks out after foreign troops leave. Pakistan has also long complained that the United States has overlooked its contribution to the fight against militants. NATO’s top commander in Afghanistan, US General John Allen, met Pakistani counterparts in Islamabad yesterday to discuss cross border security in the wake of hundreds of rocket attacks in eastern Afghanistan which Afghan officials have blamed on the Pakistan army. Pakistan has denied the accusation. “We are making significant progress toward building a partnership that is enduring, strategic, carefully defined, and that enhances the security and prosperity of the region,” Allen said in a statement after his talks. The NATO-led force in Afghanistan has acknowledged an 11 per cent spike in attacks over the past three months since the start of the summer fighting period, although overall the number of foreign soldiers killed is down on last year. Eighty-five were killed in June and July against 119 over the same period last year.
China pours scorn on US criticism of its religious policies China has blasted a U.S. State Department report that criticised its controls on religion, saying yesterday the document was prejudiced and an attempt to meddle in domestic affairs. The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s condemnation of the International Religious Freedom Report released this
week was predictable - and the latest reminder of how human rights issues remain a chronic irritant between Washington and Beijing. The annual report issued on Monday found a “marked deterioration” in state respect for religious freedom in China in 2011, and cited tighter restric-
tions on religion, especially in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and nunneries. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei adamantly disagreed. “Chinese people of every ethnicity enjoy full freedom of religion and faith,” Hong said in comments issued on the ministry’s website (http://www.mfa.
gov.cn). “The US side should abandon its prejudices,” he added. “Stop exploiting religious issues to meddle in China’s internal affairs, and don’t do things that harm Sino-American relations and mutual trust and cooperation.”

Business Adidas outruns rivals in sales
ECB to buy eurozone bonds on open market
WORLD No.2 sporting goods maker Adidas said a summer of sport was boosting demand for its three-stripe products, helping it stay a step ahead of rivals and avoid the worst of a slowdown in sales growth in China and Europe. “If the world collapses it might hit us as well, but I do believe, without sounding too confident, that we are much better than our competitors,” Chief Executive Herbert Hainer said yesterday, after forecasting 2012 earnings towards the top of its target range. Shares in the German firm, a sponsor of the London 2012 Olympic Games and the Euro 2012 soccer tournament were down 1.6 per cent at 1315 GMT, in line with a blue-chip DAX index that was dragged lower after comments from ECB president Mario Draghi. While sporting goods companies have been benefiting from a string of major events, there are growing concerns that economic troubles in Europe and slowing growth in China will start to take their toll. Commerzbank analyst Andreas Riemann said investors should cash in on profits now from Adidas shares, which have gained 21 per cent this year, as slowing earnings momentum could soon catch up with high consensus expectations for Adidas. Adidas said sales growth in China, where it and rivals are battling with local companies to win over the country's brand-hungry consumers, slowed to 13 per cent in the second quarter from 26 per cent in the first. Sales in debt-ridden western Europe were up just 5 per cent, compared with 7 per cent in the first quarter.

THE European Central Bank will gear up to buy Italian and Spanish bonds on the open market, but would only act after eurozone governments have activated bailout funds to do the same, ECB President Mario Draghi said yesterday. Draghi indicated that any ECB intervention would start at the earliest in September and would depend on countries in trouble on bond markets making a request and accepting strict conditions and supervision. He also indicated that German central bank chief Jens Weidmann had expressed reservations about bond-buying and further efforts would be needed to persuade the Bundesbank before a final vote to take action. At a news conference following the central bank’s monthly meeting, Draghi said the bank would consider other “nonstandard” measures to rein in the eurozone crisis. “The Governing Council, within its mandate to maintain price stability over the medium term and in observance of its independence in determining monetary policy, may undertake outright open market operations of a size adequate to reach its objective,” Draghi said after the bank kept eurozone interest rates at a record low 0.75 per cent.
Draghi indicated yesterday that any ECB intervention would start at the earliest in September The bank has already spent 210 billion euros buying bonds under its now dormant Securities Markets Programme (SMP) since May 2010, with limited impact, but Draghi said the new effort would be different in scope and conditionality. Any new ECB action was conditional on eurozone governments using their EFSF and ESM bail out funds first, he said. “Governments must stand ready to activate the ESM/ EFSF in the bond market when exceptional financial market circumstances and risks to financial stability exist,” he said.
Financial markets seemed underwhelmed by the announcements, with some investors having interpreted Draghi's comments last week as a sign of imminent rather than future and conditional action. “It is quite disappointing ... There is a lack of any action, so he has basically passed the buck back on to politicians,” said Ioan Smith, strategist at Knight Capital. German bund futures extended gains, a sign of investors seeking safety, and the euro fell by more than one cent to below $1.22 at 1330 GMT. Draghi was under intense pressure from investors, Eu-
ropean leaders and even the United States to deliver on Thursday on his pledge to do whatever it takes to save the euro by bringing high borrowing costs down and salving the debt crisis. His comments in London last Thursday that the ECB would do whatever it takes within its mandate to protect the currency bloc from collapse - “and believe me, it will be enough” had already eased tensions on the debt markets. Other countries, especially the United States, have raised pressure on the ECB to act as the two-and-a-half year old eurozone crisis weighs on global growth.
(AFP)
ECB action, meanwhile, is hamstrung by EU rules forbidding it from financing governments. The ECB issued a legal opinion in March 2011 ruling out perhaps the biggest gun, giving the ESM bailout fund rights to tap the ECB for funds to increase its firepower. The ECB also has to find a way to get any measures past Germany, the eurozone's largest economy and its principal paymaster. The Bundesbank issues regular reminders of inflationary dangers stemming from nonstandard measures such as bond purchases and the limits central banks face.
US weekly jobless claims rise less than expected

THE number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits rose less than expected last week, but the data continues to be influenced by distortions from seasonal auto shutdowns. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 8,000 to a seasonally adjusted 365,000, the Labour Department said yesterday. The prior week’s figure was revised up to 357,000 from the previously reported 353,000. “The claims number is not that bad. There does seem to be some difficulty dealing with the seasonals this time of year whether it's auto plant closures or lack thereof,” said Cary Leahey, a senior economist at Decision Economics in New York. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims rising to 370,000 last week. The four-week moving average for new claims, a better measure of labour market trends, fell 2,750 to 365,500, the lowest in four months. Temporary plant shutdowns by automakers for annual retooling cause wide swings in claims data in July, which makes it difficult to get a clear picture of the labour market's health. The model used by the government to smooth the numbers for typical seasonal patterns has trouble anticipating the timing of the temporary closures and in addition, some automakers kept production lines running in July. A Labour Department official said last week was the last where the seasonal expectation was shaped by seasonal layoffs in the auto manufacturing sector.
US job seekers attend a career fair on July 30, 2012 in New York City (AFP) US financial markets were little moved by the data, with traders focusing attention on a press conference by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi. The claims data has no bearing on the July employment report as it falls outside the survey period.
The government is expected to report today that employers added 100,000 new workers to their payrolls last month, according to a Reuters survey, up from 80,000 in June. Job growth averaged 75,000 per month in the second quarter, a sharp deceleration from the average monthly increase of 226,000 in the first three months of the year. An uncertain fiscal policy path and ongoing debt problems in Europe have hurt demand and left businesses cautious about hiring new workers. On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve signaled it was willing to ease monetary policy further, noting that economic activity had slowed in the first half of the year. Many economists expect the US central bank to launch a third round of bond buying, also known as quantitative easing, in September. The number of people still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid fell 19,000 to 3.3 million in the week ended July 21. A second report showed planned layoffs at US companies dropped for a second straight month in July, even as job cuts in the financial sector persisted. Employers announced 36,855 planned job cuts last month, down 1.9 per cent from June, consultants Challenger, Gray & Christmas said. So far this year, announced layoffs are up 2.5 per cent from the same period in 2011. The financial sector cut 6,156 jobs in July, the largest number since January.

Hospital overtime system a scandal MANY stories about the abuse of overtime work in state hospitals have been made public over the last year. There were reports of doctors arranging appointments and operations on Saturdays in order to earn extra cash as well as claims that some hospital doctors were doubling their annual income through overtime work. The health ministry had undertaken to investigate the reports but it subsequently fudged the issue, avoiding giving a clear account of the situation. Yesterday the health minister Stavros Malas confirmed that the ministry had carried out a detailed study of overtime paid by each state hospital for comparative purposes, but added that it was difficult to draw any conclusions. For instance, Paphos hospital may have a higher average cost for overtime than Limassol’s but this was because the former had half the number of doctors of the latter, he said. He avoided mentioning that Limassol hospital probably had twice as many patients. As regard the report that many planned Caesarean births were carried out on Saturday afternoons in Paphos, he said the case files were being investigated. It is obvious the minister, who is also a presidential candidate, is treading carefully because he does not want to ruffle any feathers. He is also following the government philosophy of pandering to the unions. How long does it take to establish whether Caesarean sections had needlessly been performed on a Saturday afternoon? He even defended the payment of overtime, saying it would have cost the state more if patients were sent to private clinics. The only reason the study had been undertaken was so “we have the right data when negotiating with PASYDY (nurses) and PASYKI (doctors) about the evolution of the service provision plan.” As usual, the government is opting for the softly-softly approach less it angers the mighty unions. The fact is the agreements, governing the hospital workers, are in need of an overhaul. Shift allowances of nurses cost the taxpayer, according to Malas €16 million a year. This is because nurses are regarded as office workers and any work outside the PASYDY agreed working day (7.30am to 2.30pm) earns a shift allowance. This is an outrageous arrangement. Perhaps a shift allowance could be paid to nurses working from midnight till morning, but why offer an allowance for someone working in the afternoon? It is scandalous that nurses are paid extra for working in the afternoon. The same applies to doctors who also work civil service office hours and receive an allowance if they are on call; the total cost of doctors’ allowances, Malas said, was €6 million a year. Being on call and working shifts should not command additional pay as it is part of working in a hospital. If doctors and nurses want to work civil service office hours they should quit the hospitals and apply for work in the civil service. Somehow we doubt Malas will make this point when ‘negotiating’ with PASYKI and PASYDY.

Genocide: elevating ‘crime of all crimes’ R
ARELY does one read such hopeful news: in late June, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) acquitted former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadžić of genocide. That might sound like a bad thing: Karadžić, who once warned Bosnia’s Muslims that war would lead them down the road to hell, surely deserves to be sentenced for the acts of which he was just acquitted – murder, siege, and slaughter almost beyond naming. But for genocide? Better not. In fact, we would be better off getting rid of genocide as a crime altogether. The legal concept of genocide is so incoherent, so harmful to the purposes that international law serves, that it would be better if we had never invented it. Karadžić’s acquittal – precisely because he is still on trial on other counts related to the same atrocities – is an opportunity to move toward the sensible goal of retiring it. This was not just any acquittal. The ICTY decided that, after a two-year trial, the prosecution had not presented enough evidence for any judge to find Karadžić guilty of genocide early in the Bosnian War (he faces a separate count for the July 1995 massacre at Srebrenica, and the prosecution is appealing the acquittal). The court has been consistent: with just a few trials left, it has issued no convictions for genocide apart from Srebrenica. The broader charge was always risky, but, for many advocates, it is an article of faith that genocide was Bosnia-wide. Still, the problem with genocide is not narrow judging, but that the crime itself is doubly irredeemable: it is defective in its definition and troubling in its moral and political effects. Genocide requires “special intent.” A genocidaire must intend both to commit a defined crime and to destroy the victim’s group. In domestic law, the motive behind a crime is usually irrelevant – and for good reason. People have complex reasons for acting illegally. War – a collective enterprise in which killing your enemies can be legal – increases that complexity. Trying to prove genocidal intent has drawn prosecutors into thickets of interpretation – such
Comment Timothy William Waters as giving lessons on the history of Greater Serbia – that distract from trials’ forensic core and encourage their politicization, as defendants “hijack” proceedings with their own justificatory glosses. But the alternative – relaxing evidentiary standards – would undermine values such as legality and reasonable doubt, which are essential to a fair trial. Genocide’s stringent requirements mean that it is – and should be – difficult to convict a defendant. That is consistent with our intuition that genocide is unique. But, while granting supreme status to the “crime of crimes” may seem morally attractive, the gravitational effect of genocide distorts international law and politics. Genocide makes other crimes seem less important. When Goran Jelisić – a camp guard in Bosnia who called himself “the Serb Adolf” – was acquitted of genocide in 1999, one might have concluded from the prosecution’s stunned reaction that Jelisić had walked free. In fact, he confessed to 31 other counts covering the same underlying acts, and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Likewise, reactions to the Karadžić decision show how inflated the perceived stakes are. Some say that acquitting him denies his victims’ suffering – as if only genocide mattered. But it is only because acknowledgement of suffering has become identified so dogmatically with one crime that anything else seems inadequate. The problem extends beyond Bosnia. Asking “Was it genocide?” does little to illuminate what was done to which Armenians by which Ottomans during World War I. Today, Turks willing to discuss or even apologize for the massacres refuse to confess to the “supreme crime,” but Armenians can accept no other label. Any group whose suffering is not called “genocide” feels like a second-class victim. This is morally perverse. It is not more wrong to kill people because of their ethnicity than
ON THIS DAY AUGUST 3
Radovan Karadžić at his trial in the Hague it is to kill them because of their political beliefs, gender, or for the sheer pleasure of watching them die. Yet this is precisely what elevating genocide presupposes. The political cost is high. Genocide’s status eases the pressure to intervene in crises that are “only murderous.” Yet crying genocide too liberally quickly cheapens its value, entangling efforts to respond to ongoing exterminations in debates about their precise legal nature. Despite these problems, prosecuting genocide might be worthwhile if it were the only way to hold mass murderers accountable. But it is not. Buried beneath the headlines about Karadžić’s acquittal are those other charges: he will be tried for the same acts, but classified as crimes against humanity and war crimes. If the prosecution produces enough evidence, Karadžić will be sentenced for the same shelling and sniping, the same killings and rape. All that will be lost is the opportunity to label those acts “genocide.” This is the real reason to drop “the crime of crimes”: its redundancy. There is no act of genocide that is not also another crime. Genocide is a crime of characterization, an interpreta-
tion. Rather than parse killers’ motives, we better affirm our own values by denying that any reasons could ever justify such acts. Genocide is a socially meaningful way to describe a species of annihilation; it is the legal category that we must question. We need international crimes that are minimally characterized – commonsensical analogues of domestic crimes – with as little room for interpretation as possible. In court, we need not know why men slaughter to condemn them for it. So let us end genocide as we know it – by stopping genocides, but also by abandoning the crime of genocide. Let us call its constituent evils by their ancient names. That will do for Karadžić, when judgment comes: he is still on trial, and we can still name his crimes. Sorkin stands by Newsroom, denies firing writing staff
Bieber spotlights his grown-up side in video
One of the most talked about new shows on TV
CANADIAN pop star Justin Bieber has pulled out the Hollywood stops in his latest video for the single ‘As Long As You Love Me’, making a sort of mini-film showing his grown-up side. Bieber, 18, recruited gritty actor Michael Madsen, best known for his roles in Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, to play the disapproving father of Bieber’s love interest in the slick music video, which runs nearly six minutes. In the video, which debuted online on Wednesday, Bieber plays a star-crossed lover. It features car chases, fights, raunchy dancers and steamy romance set against the Los Angeles skyline, all part of a plan to transition the singer from teeny bopper to adult artist. Bieber fans, known as ‘Beliebers,’ praised him on social media websites for showing his darker side and fighting for love. Bieber rose to fame as a baby-faced pop star on YouTube, singing innocent love songs such as ‘Baby’ and ‘One Less Lonely’ Girl. In the past year, he has grown under the watchful eye of the public and is dating Disney actress and singer Selena Gomez. The new electro-pop ‘As Long As You Love Me’, not to be confused with the Backstreet Boys song with the same title, features rapper Big Sean and is the second single from his latest album ‘Believe’. Bieber unveiled his new image in the video for the first single from the album, ‘Boyfriend’, which saw him cavorting with dancers and driving fast cars. The video earned a nomination for best male video, and the winner will be announced at the MTV Video Music awards in September.
By Jill Serjeant OSCAR-WINNING writer Aaron Sorkin has vigorously defended his controversial show set in a fictional cable TV newsroom, and refuted reports that he fired his writing staff. Sorkin said that Newsroom, which mixes real news stories with fictional characters in a workplace drama, was not intended to thumb its nose at the way established television channels have covered big news events. Sorkin, creator of the idealistic White House drama The West Wing and the awardwinning screenplay writer of Facebook movie The Social Network, also told journalists that the next episode of Newsroom will deal with the capture and killing by US forces in 2011 of Osama bin Laden. Newsroom has been one of the most talked about new shows on US television since its debut on HBO in June, with critics and fans divided over its utopian portrait of what TV news could be and its portrayal of news reporters. “I have only ever tried to write the way I write,” Sorkin told the Television Critics Association. “I haven’t tried to figure out what most people will like, and then give it
Jeff Daniels star of The Newsroom and creator and executive producer Aaron Sorkin (R) speak during an HBO presentation
to them. I try to write what I like, and what I think my friends will like, and then I keep my fingers crossed that enough other people will like it that I can keep doing it.” “Anytime people are talking this much about a TV show is good for television, good for people who watch and good for people who work in television,” he said. Sorkin took the opportunity to deny a media report last month that claimed he had fired the writing staff for the show’s second season, which has already been ordered by HBO.
“The writing staff was not fired. ... Seeing that in print has scared the hell out of the writers. They are coming to work early and being polite to me. I love the writing staff. I think they are a fantastic group,” he said. Sorkin’s use of recent news events, including the 2011 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the Japanese tsunami and nuclear reactor meltdown, and the shooting of US Representative Gabby Giffords, has offended many journalists because he appears to be critical of reporting and errors made while reporting
breaking news. “I didn’t want to make up fake news. I didn’t feel we would be able to relate to fake news,” Sorkin said. But he added, “I didn’t do it so I could leverage hindsight, so I could make our characters smarter.” Sorkin also shrugged off criticism that his female characters mess up more on their jobs than the male journalists, saying all the characters in the show were deeply flawed. And he said the first season has already been filmed, so he could not make changes
even if he wanted to. Jeff Daniels plays cranky TV anchorman Will McAvoy, who is on a mission to present the news without commercial or corporate obstacles. Daniels has made clear he had no time for critics. “It took me a long time as an actor to stop reading you,” Daniels told the TV critics. “If Aaron is happy, if HBO is happy, and I am happy when I leave the set, I hate to say it is great. ... There is nothing you can tell me, I am sorry to say, that will help me as an actor.”
Aerosmith’s Tyler: American Special Simpsons Olympic episode Tatum O’Neal back in rehab Idol job ‘not my cup of tea’ By Jill Serjeant ROCK singer Steven Tyler said he “loved and hated” his two-year stint as a judge on American Idol but admitted the TV singing contest was “not my cup of tea.” Tyler, who announced in July he was quitting America’s mostwatched entertainment show after two years as a judge, told Rolling Stone magazine that he took the job partly to wait out an internal feud in his band, Aerosmith. “It was something to do while the storm blew by, to be honest,” he said in an interview in the upcoming August 2 issue. “I loved it and hated it. It was a great job, I sat next to J. Lo and I made a ton of money. It was a moment in life and it became larger than life,” he added. Tyler and singer Jennifer Lopez, who is also leaving the show, were brought onto American Idol two years ago after the exit of acerbic British judge Simon Cowell. The Aerosmith rocker said he had come under pressure from producers to fill the nasty-judge role vacated by Cowell. “The show’s about kids and what you do to nurture their talent. They wanted me to take the piss out of the kids and I don’t have that in me. That’s not what I’m about. That’s more about that other guy. Not me,” he said. Aerosmith - made up of frontman Tyler, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford - have since patched up years of internal strife and have been working for months on their first album of new material since 2001’s Just Push Play. The new album, Music from Another Dimension! will be released in November.
The cartoon will feature Marge Simpson’s chain-smoking twin sisters Selma and Patty rowing down the Thames
THE popular cartoon is getting into the London 2012 spirit with a storyline based on the games in which Marge Simpson’s chain-smoking twin sisters Patty and Selma are seen rowing down the River Thames against American rowers the Winklevoss twins who competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The grouchy duo will speed past London landmarks like Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament in the race. The episode also gives a nod to The Social Network with actor Arnie Hammer reprising his role as both brothers, who famously sued Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for $140 million, claiming he stole their ConnectU idea to create the social networking site. The Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss characters are also seen sporting exaggerated sideburns in the style of British Olympic Gold cycling medallist, Bradley Wiggins. The episode is aptly titled ‘The D’oh-cial Network’ and will be broadcast in the UK on Sky1 at 6pm on Sunday.

Doctors ‘not taught about exercise’ ALMOST one in two medical students is failing to learn about the benefits of exercise despite physical inactivity being one of the main causes of chronic disease, a study suggests. Researchers from University College London said there is a “major inconsistency” in the teaching of future doctors after data showed that just 56 per cent of medical students get the recommended education about physical activity. Promoting exercise among patients should be important because the “majority of the population in England live largely sedentary lives”, they said. After collecting data from all UK medical schools, they found that time spent teaching physical activity science is “minimal”. “Delivery of physical activity teaching is varied across UK medical schools but, overall, was sparse or nonexistent,” the authors wrote.
Japanese women lose longevity crown Death certs don’t tell whole story JAPANESE women lost their longevity crown last year after 26 years at the top of world life expectancy rankings, the government said, blaming the 2011 earthquake and tsunami for the drop. The health and labour ministry said the disaster, which left nearly 20,000 dead or missing, was mainly behind a decline in average lifespan by 0.4 years to 85.90 years. That put Japanese women behind Hong Kong, in the top spot with 86.7 years. The ministry said a rise in the number of suicides last year also contributed to the decline. For men, average life expectancy fell 0.11 years to 79.44, leaving them tied for 7th place with Italians. Switzerland led male longevity rankings with average expectancy of 80.2 years. As a result of advances in health care and falling birth rates, Japan, the world’s 10th most populous nation, has become one of the world’s oldest and fastest ageing societies. The trend has been particularly pronounced in the northeast, where, even before the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, scarcity of jobs had been driving young people away. Many of the victims of the disaster were elderly residents who stayed behind.
DEMENTIA may be overlooked as one of the biggest contributors to death in the US, thanks to oversimplistic death certificates, says a new study. While the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) attributed only three per cent of recent deaths to dementia, the condition contributed to 13 per cent of deaths among the population the researchers studied. “We were actually surprised at what we found,” Dr Mary Tinetti, who led the study at Yale University, told Reuters Health. “Dementia was the second most common contributor to death, which is a much higher proportion than when only a single cause of death is considered.” When doctors in the US fill out death certificates, they follow World Health Organisation guidelines to decide how a person died, and then record just one underlying reason for death. That may make sense for young people who die, said Tinetti, but attributing death to just a single disease isn’t accurate for older adults. “The vast majority of older adults have two, three, four or even five chronic diseases,” said Tinetti, whose team published their report in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
Are migraines more No evidence that sex spoils sport common than thought? Neurologists report a much higher-thanaverage rate of migraines THE national survey found that of 245 neurologists, 35 per cent said they’d ever had migraine headaches. And 26 per cent had had one in the past year - double what’s reported among Norwegians as a whole. Worldwide, an estimated 11 per cent of people have suffered a migraine in the past year. It’s not clear why neurologists are so taxed by migraines. But one possibility is that the general public actually has higher migraine rates, but doesn’t realize it or report the headaches, according to the researchers, led by Dr. Karl B. Alstadhaug of Nordland Hospital in Bodo, Norway. Still, another explanation could be that neurologists, or doctors in general, have a higher-than-average risk of migraine, said Dr. Randolph Evans, a clinical professor of neurology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. “It is a curious finding,” Evans said in an interview. In his own study of 220 neurologists, Evans found that about half to three-quarters said they had ever had migraines.
Migraines involve intense throbbing in the head, and sensitivity to light A statistical stumbling block called “selection bias” could be at work, however: The neurologists in Evans’s study were attending a course on headache, so he may have sampled a group of doctors especially interested in headache - which could include those who suffer migraines themselves. The same might be true of the new study, which was published in the journal Headache. Alstadhaug’s team sent surveys to all of the neurologists registered in Norway. But more than one-third did not respond, and it’s possible that the doctors who did respond were more likely to be migraine sufferers.
“I certainly believe that a questionnaire study like this is biased,” Alstadhaug told Reuters Health in an email, “but I don’t think that it can explain the results.” Even if all the non-responders were migraine-free, Alstadhaug said, that would still leave the rate of migraines among all Norwegian neurologists at 17 per cent. He and his colleagues also asked the doctors whether their own migraines had, in part, led them to become neurologists (since that could help explain the high migraine rates). But only one doctor said that was the case. Alstadhaug’s team suspects that the migraine rate
among neurologists may be a more accurate estimate of what’s going on in the public at large. Neurologists specialize in disorders of the brain and nervous system, and some focus on headaches in particular. So if anyone should know the signs and symptoms of migraine, it would be a neurologist. Migraines typically involve an intense throbbing sensation in one area of the head, plus sensitivity to light and sound, and nausea or vomiting in some cases. About 30 per cent of people with recurrent migraines have sensory disturbances shortly before their headache hits.
Longer working hours ‘lowers birth weight’ EXPECTANT mothers who work up to their due date are likely to have babies with a lower birth weight, creating risks for the future, a study has revealed. Women who worked after they were eight months pregnant had babies on average around half a pound lighter than those who stopped
work between six and eight months. The University of Essex research – which drew on data from three major studies, two in the UK and one in the US – found the effect of continuing to work during the late stages of pregnancy was equal to that of smoking while pregnant. Past research has shown
babies with low birth weights are at higher risks of poor health and slow development, and may suffer from multiple problems later in life. Stopping work early in pregnancy was particularly beneficial for women with lower levels of education, the study found – suggest-
ing that the effect of working during pregnancy was possibly more marked for those doing physically demanding work. The birth weight of babies born to mothers under the age of 24 was not affected by them continuing to work, but in older mothers the effect was more significant.
THE ANCIENT Greeks believed athletes should avoid sex before sport, but modern Olympians and scientists are torn over the merits of in-competition coitus and whether abstinence enhances performance. For years coaches and athletes have practiced abstinence the night or even weeks before a big event, although all bets are off when the medal ceremony is over - 150,000 condoms were handed out to the 10,500 athletes competing at the London Games. Boxer Muhammad Ali reportedly went without sex for six weeks before a big fight. American Marty Liquori, the world’s top 5000-metre runner four decades ago, was once quoted as saying: “Sex makes you happy. Happy people don’t run a 3:47 mile.” Experts say the long-standing myth has yet to be explored fully, however. Most research has been based on the physiological impact and, so far, having sex has not been found to reduce physical strength, power or endurance. “When we test people in the lab, we are examining ‘tests of performance’ but in competition, psychology very likely plays a much more important role,” said Ian Shrier, a professor in the department of family medicine at McGill Univer-
The theory is that sexual frustration makes people more aggressive
sity in Canada. “Those who claim it decreases performance usually say it is because it decreases focus or aggression or tension. There are no studies that have examined this.” A review of scientific studies on the issue published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine suggested sex the night before competition has no effect on physiological test results. A theory that sexual frustration makes people more aggressive, and that ejaculation draws testosterone, an athletic performance-related hormone, from the body, has yet to be scientifically proven. At the London 2012 Games, while there might not be much sex being had, it’s certainly being talked about. Even London Mayor Boris Johnson is getting in on the act, telling reporters he wants the Olympics to “inspire a generation” not “create a generation”. The Australian team hit the headlines when its committee decided shooter Russell Mark could not share a room in the athletes’ village with his wife and fellow shooting competitor Lauryn Mark. The Australian Olympic Committee played down the furore, saying allowing the couple to share would inconvenience other female athletes.

The song became a novelty y club hit, and Redfoo and SkyBlu were on n their way to becoming party-rock ambassadors, ssadors, translating the DJ-club vibe to the e pop charts. Don’t Forget Music Pomos jazz fest comes to an end As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and this weekend, the same holds true for the Pomos Paradise Jazz Festival which is anticipating large crowds to wrap up the event in celebratory fashion. The festival, which began last weekend, runs until Sunday, bringing together six bands and 23 international musicians at the laidback and notably unpretentious Paradise Place. Set in a fantastic location, the annual jazz festival has gathered together a fine selection of jazz artists from around the world since 1999. Organisers stress that when the very first festivals started out; it was extremely hard to find musicians on the island wanting to take part, but as the years went by, musicians began to flock to the event, so much so that today there aren’t enough days to accommodate them. All the action reaches its conclusion this Sunday with powerful and varied performances from the likes
playing everywhere from clubs to ads for Kia Motors, the pair even performed with Madonna at this year’s Super Bowl halftime. If you haven’t heard LMFAO on the radio yet then you simply haven’t had your radio on. Their “Party Rock Anthem”, in which they encourage you to them over 460 million “shake that”, earned th views on YouTube, putting it in the top 10 all-time most watc watched videos. And fans young and old now shamelessly boast that they are “sexy and (they) know it”, thanks to a another LMFAO hit. In the vid video for the latter song, the p pair dance in Speedos and sing about wiggling. Silly Si and hugely popular, it spawned parodies by everyone from Elmo to Bruce Springsteen (The Boss, however, did d not don a Speedo). Sky Sk Blu was forced to pull out ou of the group’s live shows last year yea after he injured himself during a performance, resulting p in three hernia herniated disks. Following five months of recovery he’s back on form and in two week’s time local crowds will get ge the chance to witness for themselves the Who Came to Party!? experi experience. Reaching beyond the traditional bey beach party vibe, Who Came to Party!? in incorporates special guests, eclectic branded décor ecle and swag. Expect plenty of surE prises and a fresh slate of summer dance tracks track from the DJ, who might also be b joined by members of his party crew/music collective Big Bad.
of Koullouras 4rtet and Theodosii Spassov. Tonight’s programme begins with Pantelis Stoikos from Greece and his group Trio Balkano. Stoikos is one of the most creative trumpet players in the modern world jazz scenery from the area of Balkans. The Trio Balkano, with Lakis Tzimkas on bass and Alexandros Papadopoulos on drums emerged from his duo Improvisation in Balkan Jazz. The band is pushing back the boundaries of tradition and entering the realm of contemporary jazz with its own identity. Tomorrow the line-up will begin with the Koullouras 4rtet. They mix a lot of new modern elements with traditional forms in a way that derives from other music genres such as ethnic music. Members of the band are Irinaeos Koullouras on double bass, George Krasides on saxophone, Ioannis Vafeas on drums and George Morfitis on keyboards. A late-night jam session will then follow the quartet. The official programme of the 13th Paradise Jazz Festival will conclude with Theodosii Spassov. Acknowledged as a master of the kaval, an eight-hole wooden flute known as one of the most ancient instruments of Europe, Spassov has manage to develope a distinctive style of playing the kaval, by synthesising traditional folklore with jazz, fusion and classical music.
The Party Rock was brought to Indianapolis, Indiana as LMFAO (Sky Blu on left and Redfoo right), took part in an electrifying performance with Madonna at Super Bowl XLVI
The party poses a few dangers - mainly getting sprayed with drinks during Champagne Showers, bombarded with confetti during the closing acts and the occasional escaped inflatable zebra. So, if you’re sexy and you know it, get ready for champagne showers, shots and shuffling, because this is one party you can’t afford to miss. The Dark Knight Rises
SUMMARIES Ted (See page opposite)
Our rating:
The Dark Knight Rises It’s been eight years since Batman (Christian Bale) vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act – but everything will change with the arrival of Selina (Anne Hathaway), a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane (Tom Hardy), a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce Wayne out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane. Also starring Michael Caine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard and Gary Oldman.
Directed by Christopher Nolan. (Comic-book action drama, 164 mins.) Our rating:

But when an anti-Aladeen protester (Anna Faris) mistakes the now beardless Aladeen for a fellow traveller, the Dictator’s complicated predicament becomes even more complicated. Also starring Jason Mantzoukas. Directed by Larry Charles. (Comedy, 83 mins.) Our rating:

Ted
Directed by: Seth MacFarlane Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, voice of Seth MacFarlane US 2012, 106 mins. Showing from today at the K-Cineplex and K-Cineplex (Mall of Cyprus) in Nicosia, the Rio and K-Cineplex in Limassol, the K-Cineplex in Larnaca and the Rio in Paphos.

Ted
THE PLOT As a child, John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) makes a Christmas miracle happen by bringing to life his one and only friend – his teddy bear. Ted the talking teddy (voice of Seth MacFarlane) becomes a celebrity but remains faithful to John, his best friend forever. Boy and bear grow up together – but the time comes when grown-up John has to choose between staying with his girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis) or holding on to his friendship with his crude and extremely inappropriate teddy bear.
WHAT THE CRITICS SAID Pro: “If you thought the crazed mind behind Family Guy’s legendary chowder pukeathon (season four, episode eight) had no greater horrors to infl ict on living-room floors, think again. Midway through Ted, Seth MacFarlane’s delirious feature debut, some weapons-grade pooing has put all that in the shade. That the culprit is not a hopped-up teddy bear – presumably saving himself for the next trip to the woods – but a stoned hooker called Sauvignon Blanc tells you everything you need to know about MacFarlane’s comedy. “For those slow on the uptake, Ted probably isn’t the place to come for droll social comment or Woody Allenesque introspection. There are memorable cameos galore, but none of them are by Marshall McLuhan. Instead, MacFarlane straps us in for a red-band roller-coaster of lewd humour, fart gags, pop-culture references, blow-job jokes and killer lines that’s so dizzying it should come with a health warning… “If the hell-for-leather gag rate and Wahlberg and Kunis’ sheer likability elevates this love triangle far above the likes of You, Me And Dupree, major kudos should also go to the fi lm’s FX boffins. Utilising Avatar-grade mo-cap technology, they’ve created a wholly believable central character who just happens to have come from a shelf at FAO Schwarz … Crass, supremely silly and very, very funny, Ted is the comedy of the summer.” Phil de Semlyen, Empire (UK)
“The low comedy Ted has divided people into two camps, those who find its rote smuttiness, sexism, racism, homophobia, and fart jokes unendurable, and those like me, who – despite opposing most of those incorrect –isms – think watching a big teddy bear with a potty mouth do bong hits and bang hookers (though he lacks genitalia) is a good time out. “Mark Wahlberg plays John, the unambitious rental-car worker who, as a lonely boy, wished his bear could talk and ended up – a Christmas miracle! – with a BFFL … Wahlberg has become a great straight man – dopey and innocent, perhaps reliving the childhood he missed, having been too busy assaulting people as a juvenile delinquent. The lure of indolence is palpable, Ted’s effusions endearing. (‘Ah, ya bahstahd, I love ya. I’m not gay.’) Ted runs out of invention in its last act (the bear is coveted by a chillingly deadpan sociopath, played by Giovanni Ribisi, and the villain’s fat son), but I can’t think of a better movie to see if you’re male and want to get high and relive your idiot adolescence.” David Edelstein, New York magazine (US)
pets did Kermit take bong hits or snort cocaine or knock back tequila shots or have sex with a woman in the stock room of a grocery store… “The movie marks the directorial debut of MacFarlane, who also co-wrote the script and voices the eponymous doll – and is everything one would expect from the creator of TV’s corrosively irreverent Family Guy, freed at last from the constraints of network TV. The cheerfully inappropriate sense of humour extends beyond four-letter words, although MacFarlane certainly has a way with those: This is a comedy designed to elicit gales of shocked laughter from its audience, which it often does… “And then, in its final 20 minutes, Ted loses its merciless satirical edge and goes shockingly soft… Like last year’s Paul, another ode to 1980s-era filmmaking, Ted is more of an idea than a movie, a string of jokes and homages starring a cartoon and some game actors whose performances are destined to be enjoyed in chunks, rarely from start to finish, during momentary breaks of channel surfing on late-night TV.” Rene Rodriguez, Miami Herald (US)
Mixed: “In Ted, a grown man (Mark Wahlberg) must decide between his girlfriend (Mila Kunis) and a talking stuffed teddy bear (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) he’s loved since childhood. This is exactly the same plot as The Muppets, in which Jason Segel was forced to choose between Amy Adams and Kermit the Frog. The main difference, I think, is that at no time in The Mup-
Anti: “There is really only one joke in Ted – a toy bear comes to life and turns out to have a filthy mouth and a taste for weed – but the movie’s attempts at humour can nonetheless be sorted into a few distinct categories. There are jokes that are funny only because a stuffed bear says them, jokes that are not funny even though a stuffed bear says them and jokes that may
or may not be funny because of Mark Wahlberg. Mila Kunis is also in the movie, but she can’t be funny because she’s a girl, and her job is to be amused, tolerant and pretty. “Tolerant amusement is pretty much the best this harmless little picture, directed by Seth MacFarlane, is able to manage, even though it strives for obnoxious hilarity. The cleverly animated ursine title character, voiced in an exaggerated Boston bray by Mr. MacFarlane himself, is a fire hose of vulgarity, ethnic insult, homophobia and misogyny. In the modern, meta manner he (that is, Mr. MacFarlane) wants both to indulge and to deny the offensiveness of this material, to wallow in ugliness and make fun of it too. It’s a wasted effort though. The sin of Ted is not that it is offensive but that it is boring, lazy and wildly unoriginal… “Sexual and flatulencebased gags are accompanied by the usual side dishes: warmed-over pop-cultural references and cheap-shot jabs at celebrities and ethnic minorities… There are some genuinely, wildly funny bits in the movie – a brutal motelroom fistfight between Ted and John; a cocaine-fueled talking binge; a few choice insults and smutty riffs – but the feature film is not a hospitable form for Mr. MacFarlane. He has no particular visual knack, little interest in storytelling and nothing better to do with his naughty bear besides stuff him into a soft, sentimental comedy that seems almost proud of its lack of wit or conviction.” A.O. Scott, New York Times (US)

Television PICK OF THE DAY True Grit (Novacinema1, 22.00) Film buffs like to play games, and one of their most popular games is ‘Which remakes are better than the originals?’ - a topical game nowadays, with Hollywood seemingly determined to remake most of its hits from the 70s and 80s (a bad idea, because lightning seldom strikes twice; they’d be much better off remaking the flops, and trying to get it right this time). Some answers are straightforward: the new Ocean’s Eleven is better than its rather creaky 1960 original, even though the latter stars Frank Sinatra and his ‘Rat Pack’; Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is way better than Bedtime Story, a forgotten 60s farce (which does not mean Steve Martin is a better actor than Marlon Brando, who played his role in the original). Other answers are more controversial. Is the Eddie Murphy Nutty Professor better than the Jerry Lewis Nutty Professor? (My answer: no.) Is the 80s version of The Fly better than the 50s version of The Fly? (My answer: yes.) And what about True Grit? Does the recent remake from the Coen Brothers improve on the 1969 fi lm that netted John Wayne his only Oscar? My answer: I’ll get back to you - but probably yes, though it works both ways. On the one hand, the Coens got a real 14-year-old (as opposed to 22-year-old Kim Darby) to play Mattie, the pre-
cocious girl looking to avenge the murder of her father; on the other, their Mattie (played by Hailee Steinfeld) is such a headstrong little madam that you’re likely to give a little cheer when Texas Ranger Matt Damon takes her over his knee and proceeds to spank her bottom. On the one hand, Jeff Bridges is meaner and more misanthropic than John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn, the drunk, unpleasant Marshal hired by Mattie to fi nd the killer; on the other, that doesn’t exactly make him easy to root for. Rooster and Mattie (plus the Texas Ranger) go on a quest, rambling through a quirky, violent, floridly talky vision of the Wild West. Some of it works well, some of it not so well. The violence seems a bit gratuitous and the fi nal shoot-out is awkwardly staged, separating our three protagonists so you miss a sense of coming-together. But then the Coens add an unexpected, out-ofnowhere coda that’s deeply touching, somehow contriving to turn Mattie into a tragic heroine implying that the real punishment for her headstrong ways will be Time itself, turning an independent girl into a dry old maid - and an amiable 60s Western is suddenly rich and strange. Better than the original? I vote yea. Made in 2010.

Red Riding Hood (LTV, 21.00) Saucer-eyed Amanda Seyfried is Red Riding Hood, a.k.a. Valerie, turned from a child into an adolescent like Alice in the recent Alice in Wonderland. Val lives in a snowbound village that’s been plagued by a Wolf for decades - though in fact he (she? it?) has only just resumed killing people after a 20-year hiatus, his fi rst victim being Valerie’s sister. Maybe she was chasing a boy, says one villager, which makes sense because the Wolf is now a symbolic Wolf, punishing female sexuality - and this dire fi lm could be called a feminist update of the old fairy tale but in fact it does nothing so provocative, turning instead into a tedious whodunit called ‘Who’s the Wolf?’. Is Val’s grandma (a tired-looking Julie Christie) the Wolf? Is Peter, her bad-boy boyfriend, the Wolf? Surely it isn’t Gary Oldman as Father Solomon, a fi reand-brimstone type who not only eats his steak bloody but eats it with his bare hands? The fi lm gets increasingly incoherent, its plot more suited to a cheap horror movie, reaching a kind of nadir when the Wolf talks to Valerie (!), playing the chummy card like Blofeld with 007: “You and I are the same, Valerie...” Made in 2011.
I Spy (Capital TV, 21.00) Owen Wilson and Eddie Murphy are both funny guys, though Eddie’s been wasting his comedy talents in the past few years (or decades) - and they make this action comedy worth seeing even if it mangles its source, a 60s show that co-starred a young Bill Cosby. Owen’s a spy, Eddie a cocky boxing champion; they reluctantly team up to catch an arms dealer - and there’s nothing here you haven’t seen before, but maybe you won’t mind seeing it again with these amiable stars. Made in 2002.
Walled In (Novacinema3, 23.00) “Do you know the history of this building?” asks the inevitable sinister housekeeper. “The architect buried people alive in the walls of this building”. You’d think a fi replace and a couple of bay windows would be enough, but you know what these architects are like with their design features - though in fact our heroine (Mischa Barton) is initially there to demolish the building, before learning of its dark past. She talks to residents (“Did you live here when the murders happened?” “They were more like sacrifices...”) and decides to dig deeper but it seems the evil architect (or his ghost) may still be around, looking for new victims to entomb. Fair Fridaynight thrills though the problem, as so often, is that everything’s scary as long as it’s mysterious, turning into routine heroine-in-peril action once the secrets are actually revealed. Also with Cameron Bright (the creepy kid from Birth) as a rather odd teenager. Made in 2009.

ARIES March 21 - April 20
LEO July 23 - August 22
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21
There are many reasons to feel good about life, especially as the Cosmos is bringing good things your way. Some of the opportunities may fall into your lap, and others may need some work in order for you to take full advantage of them. Meanwhile, you seem to have more scope romance wise, though the past may influence any decisions you make in the present.
Don’t allow stress to rob you of your peace. You can either spend most of the day thinking about all your various problems and issues, or you can determine to dwell on more inspiring notions and concepts. The Moon in your Eighth Solar House is great for enjoying a long, sensuous massage. Try any activity that can help your worries to dissolve.
The way you feel is going to alter the day whether you like it or not. The Moon in Pisces may mean you are more sensitive to your own emotional issues and those of others. Don’t let yourself get in a mood. One of the best ways to immediately feel better is to be active. Whether you walk, cycle, swim or skip, you may brighten up almost immediately.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21
VIRGO August 23 - September 23
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20
Don’t get burdened with too many tasks and general chores, as you need a chance to lighten up and do something that you really enjoy. Rather than getting on with housework, or any number of other jobs, give yourself the opportunity to experience something completely different. Visiting a new place or an exhibition would be fine ways to try.
You may need to make a decision. Taking it may mean moving out of your comfort zone, but perhaps it is the only way to go. This is a time of planting seeds, which could have greater consequence further down the line, so think carefully about the choices you do make. Your career zone is still bright, so use this opportunity to help materialize your goals.
Your words are valuable - and may provide the antidote to someone’s distressing problem. The Moon in your communication zone encourages you to talk, so you may be spending a lot of time on the phone or emailing. You need to speak, but you also have a need to soothe and comfort those who need help. All this may turn out to be extremely rewarding.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21
LIBRA September 24 - October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19
You can continue to be the life and soul of the party, no matter who you are with or what you are up to. You have charisma - you glow - you are on fire. Your love life is very much in your hands too. If you want to go out on a date ask away. You seem to call the shots and the same goes for long-term partnerships too. Phew, you can have it all Gemini!
It may not be the best day for focus and concentration but it can be excellent for brainstorming. If you are naturally musical or artistic, you may enjoy going to an exhibition or being creative yourself. Enjoy the movies? You might go with a friend or your latest love interest. If you should have more detailed stuff to attend to, if you can, leave it for another day.
Spending time with natural risk takers can help you move out of your own safe haven. Invite those who adore adventure into your circle of friends and acquaintances. As an Aquarius, you can become “fixed” in your ways and so need people around who will breathe a breath of fresh air into your life. Be bold. If you can, endless possibilities can be open to you.
CANCER June 22 - July 22
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22
PISCES February 20 - March 20
Life may appear dreamlike today, especially as the Moon connects with Neptune which may give you the impression that everything is not quite real. Your feelings may be on display too as you seem to be wearing your heart on your sleeve. If you need a chance to get out and have a laugh or even a shoulder to cry on, your friends will be happy to help you.
Try to reconcile some past issues and determine to forge ahead. Don’t dwell on those things that might be causing you problems. Instead, focus your attention on thoughts and images that will inspire you to make the best of your day. If you have a goal that you have long wanted to achieve, take the first step, you can be hugely dynamic, once you get going.
Your partner may have something for you, or perhaps someone else in your life may - so get ready to be offered a special gift you’ve always wanted. Later, the focus veers towards your home zone and may encourage you to make it more spacious and light, so you can relax and recharge your batteries. A mysterious admirer can see love in the air too.

Sport AEL: there’s still a lot of work to be done against Partizan
Mixed Europa fortunes for Cyprus sides
Cyprus champs take narrow lead into 2nd leg in Belgrade
By Nemanja Bjedov
By Nemanja Bjedov AEL manager Pambos Christodoulou said he is a little disappointed to only take a narrow one-goal advantage into next week’s Champions League third qualifying round second leg at Partizan Belgrade. Ivory Coast forward Vouho scored the only goal of the first leg in Larnaca on Wednesday night, leaving the tie still very much in the balance. “We expected a tough game against a good side that controls the ball really well. We tried to impose our style of play on them and from time to time we managed to do so,” Christodoulou said. “The game plan was to try and get ahead as early as possible, since the atmosphere at the stadium was great, and then go for another goal with the help of our fans. “We managed to get the early goal but were unlucky not to increase our lead on several other occasions in the first half,” he added. “In the second half I expected the pace to drop. I would definitely be happier if we had scored another goal and I am
AEL opened the scoring after only 13 minutes but were unable to further extend their advantage sure the players share my disappointment. “We will now focus on the return leg and I think that our chances of progressing are still 50-50. This lead does not guarantee us anything in Belgrade,” he concluded. Partizan manager Vladimir Vermezovic was clearly disappointed with his side’s performance on the night: “I am not satisfied with both the re-
sult and the way we played. “We showed them too much respect and that was not our pre-game plan. You cannot afford the luxury of missing great opportunities in European competitions as usually you do not get many, especially away from home,” he said. “Now we know exactly what to expect from them next week. We deliberately let their central defenders run
the game. Despite doing well to provoke them out of their areas we did not manage to create many chances. The problem was not their great performance, but rather the fact that we could not establish ourselves when we had to,” assessed Vermezovic. “The 1-0 result is one of the best possible to have for them ahead of the second leg. We do not have much of a choice
now as we have to attack them in Belgrade and score at least two goals. “Anything is possible in football, but I am sure that we will be much more aggressive and play radically better next week,” the Serbian manager concluded. The return leg will be played at Partizan’s stadium in Belgrade on Wednesday with the kick-off scheduled for 9.45pm Cyprus time.
Holyfield drops in to watch ‘future of boxing’ at Olympics By Padraic Halpin
Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield poses with volunteers at London’s Excel Arena
HEAVYWEIGHT great Evander Holyfield dropped by London’s boxing arena to cast an eye over the next generation of fighters looking to take a leaf out of his book by preparing for the professional ranks with an Olympic medal. Holyfield joined a list of great US fighters, such as Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali, who brought home an Olympic medal and then dominated the sport after he claimed a light heavyweight bronze at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. The former heavyweight and cruiserweight world champion, remembered for famous battles with Riddick Bowe, Mike Tyson and Len-
nox Lewis, said he planned to stick around for much of the Games to see what talent was out there. “I want to see what the future of boxing is about,” Holyfield told reporters on his way out of the arena after signing scores of autographs and posing for photographs. “The professional game can only be as good as the amateur game. If you support the amateur game, then boxing gets better and better,” he added. “It’s all about the people who get into boxing at a young age and have goals and they make it to the Olympics. If you look at boxing, all the Olympic stars always become the best boxers so it’s driven by the Olympics Games.” Holyfield said sitting at
the arena on Wednesday brought back memories of his own Olympic experience nearly 30 years ago, something an NBC TV crew overlooked earlier this week when they interviewed him on the streets of London, thinking he was a US tourist. Holyfield, who turns 50 later this year, met another Olympic medal winner-turned professional champion and former foe Lewis at the arena and advised fighters at the Games to take their time when deciding whether to follow them into the pro game. “You have to do what you have to do, some people can stay a little longer. It all depends on how you look at boxing. I had to make some money so I had to leave at 21.”
YIANNIS Okkas’ goal 20 minutes from time proved to be more than enough for Anorthosis to earn a valuable 1-0 victory away from home against Georgian side FC Dila Gori in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round yesterday evening. The Cypriot outfit had the upper hand for most of the game at Tbilisi’s Mikheil Meskhi Stadium and they sealed a well-deserved win when the experienced Okkas was left alone in the middle of the penalty area, after which he had no difficulties connecting with Juliano Spadacio’s corner, heading the ball across Marin Skender’s goal into the empty net. The hosts had Gogita Gogua sent off for a second bookable offence on the hour mark, and he will miss the second leg next Thursday at Larnaca’s Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium. Meanwhile, APOEL have a very difficult task ahead of them in the return leg against Aalesunds FK in Norway, after a narrow 2-1 win at Nicosia’s GSP Stadium last night. The visitors took an early lead when they opened up a counter attack in the 16th minute, and Jamaican international Tremaine Stewart beat Dionysis Chiotis in APOEL’s goal with a strong shot from outside the area. Nine minutes before the interval, the Cypriot team levelled the score. Jason Morrison brought down Constantinos Charalambides and freekick specialist Mario Sergio equalised with an exquisite shot. Efstathios Aloneftis set up the final score 10 minutes from time, finally converting one of the night’s several goal-scoring opportunities, despite being introduced only 16 minutes earlier. Neophytos Larkou’s AC Omonia played out a goalless draw against Serbian powerhouse FK Crvena Zvezda in Belgrade. The hosts had plenty of ball possession, but their midfielders Eduardo and Milos Dimitrijevic took too much time in transition to create any serious chances in front of Johnny Leoni’s goal. Larkou even introduced Freddy as the second forward in the last 10 minutes of the game and he positioned the Angolan striker and Andre Alves very wide in order to create the illusion of a defending team, but in fact this was a very brave move by the Cypriot manager who was actually trying to win the match. The return leg is scheduled for next Thursday at Nicosia’s GSP Stadium, while APOEL travel to Norway where they will have to play on the artificial grass surface of the Color Line Stadium in Aalesund.

Djokovic and Murray through to final four
BAGHDATIS: I’M DISAPPOINTED
Federer and Del Potro also in all-star tennis line-up By Kylie MacLellan SERBIA’S Novak Djokovic will get a shot at adding to his medal collection after securing an Olympic semifinal clash yesterday against Britain’s Andy Murray. Number two seed Djokovic, who won singles bronze in Beijing, defeated France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1 7-5 while Murray cruised to a 6-4 6-1 win over injured Spaniard Nicolas Almagro. Djokovic sped to an early lead against the exhausted Frenchman, who had played both doubles and singles on Wednesday after clocking up the longest three-set match in Olympic history a day earlier, dropping just one game before wrapping up the first set with an ace. “Today I was a bit tired so it was mission impossible,” Tsonga told reporters. He mustered enough energy to put up more of a fight in the second set, breaking the 25-year-old to go 3-1 up. But Tsonga threw away the opportunity to break a second time and the five-time Grand Slam winner levelled. Serving for the match, Djokovic secured the win with an unreturnable serve. “It was a great win for me. Tsonga is a great competitor and he is a very powerful player from the baseline so, for me, the right thing to
Five-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia will play Britain’s Andy Murray in a mouthwatering semi do today was use my serve as efficiently as possible in these windy, tough conditions,” Djokovic said. On Court One, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge commanded more of the press photographers’ attention than the match, third seed Murray took a 4-3 lead before powering four aces in a row to force
Almagro to serve to stay in the set. The Spaniard held his nerve for one more game, before sending a forehand long to give his opponent the set. The royals quickly got into the spirit of things, taking part in a Mexican wave which rippled round the crowd several times as
11th-seeded Almagro received medical treatment on his arm and shoulder. When business got back underway Murray broke in the first game of the second set, dropping just one game before wrapping up the victory. “Andy is the home hero,” said Djokovic of his opponent who reached the Wimbledon final this year. “We are all aware of his quality as in the last two or three years he has played four Grand Slam finals and he has been at the top of the men’s game for many years. “He has been playing better than ever on grass courts. I will have to be at the top of my game.” In the other half of the draw, Roger Federer will play Juan Martin Del Potro. Federer, fresh from his Wimbledon final win over Murray last month, beat big-serving John Isner, 6-4, 7-6 in his quarter-final on Centre Court. The Swiss has 17 Grand Slam titles and won an Olympic gold medal in doubles in 2008, but has never won an Olympic medal in singles. Argentina’s Del Potro, who famously beat Federer in an epic 2009 US Open final, beat Japan’s Kei Nishikori by the same score of 6-4, 7-6 in his quarter-final.
A familiar story: Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis fell apart after taking the opening set against Andy Murray TENNIS star Marcos Baghdatis has spoken of his regret after his dream of becoming Cyprus’ first-ever medallist at the Olympic Games ended on Wednesday at the hands of Andy Murray. The Cypriot lost his last-16 clash to the world number four 6-4, 1-6, 4-6 in just under two hours on Wimbledon’s famous Centre Court. “The pressure was a bit
higher as this is the Olympic Games and I am disappointed,” said Baghdatis after the match. “I came here for a medal. That was my dream, so I can say everything is finished. All the disappointment came out, but I’m sure that I’ll feel a bit better in the coming days” he added. Next up for the 27-year-old is the prestigious Toronto Masters, beginning on Monday.

Britain’s Tim Baillie (left) and Etienne Stott react to winning the men’s canoe double final
Britain power to gold in thrilling canoe double BRITISH crew Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott powered to gold in a thrilling Olympic canoe slalom double final at the Lee Valley White Water Centre yesterday. The slowest of the six qualifiers from the semi-final, the British duo were the first down the surging rapids in the final but surged through the 23 gates in a time of 106.41 seconds - a mark that was to prove unbeatable. Britain’s first gold in Olympic canoe slalom was already in the bag when the other home duo, David Florence and Richard Hounslow, set off on the last run of the final. With 12,000 people going wild in the stands, Florence and Hounslow seemed set to beat their compatriots but crossed the line 0.36 seconds slower. “We lost it on the final paddle to the line to be honest,” Hounslow told reporters. “But at least we get to stand on the podium and hear the British national anthem.”
YU Yang, one of the Chinese badminton players disqualified from the Olympics, says she is quitting the sport. Yang and her partner Xiaoli Wang were disqualified by the Badminton World Federation on Wednesday for “not using one’s best efforts to win a match”. Chinese Olympic officials demanded that the players “reflected deeply on it” and “publicly apologise”. Yang said on her Twitter-like Weibo account: “This is my last time competing. Goodbye beloved badminton.” Two pairs from South Korea and one from Indonesia were also disqualified for making errors in Tuesday’s matches. The introduction of a roundrobin stage in the games meant that losing one game could lead to an easier match in the next round. All four pairs were accused of losing in an attempt to manipulate the draw for the knockout stage with Yang and Wang facing compatriots Tian Quing and Zhao Yunlei had they won. But with Yang, who won a gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and
China’s Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang (right) are among eight players disqualified. Yu yesterday quit the sport Wang losing, the two Chinese pairings could have only met in the final. Wang also posted comments on her Weibo, saying that the players were being made to pay the price for problems with the new competition rules. ‘’What you’ve cancelled is not just a game, but my dream!’’ she said. China’s badminton coach Li Yongbo said he should take
the blame for the incident, which Chinese state media said “violates the Olympic spirit of fair competition”. “As head coach, I owe the supporters of Chinese badminton and the Chinese TV audiences an apology,” the Xinhua news agency quoted him as saying. The Chinese Olympic delegation added: “Chinese players failed to demonstrate the fine tradition and fighting
spirit of the national team. It’s me to blame.” Their places in the last eight were taken by the pairs who finished third and fourth in the qualifying groups concerned. The shockwaves from the debacle have reverberated round the Games, putting the focus squarely on match officials and calling the spirit of sport into question. Olympic judges and referees came under fire on Wednesday with one boxer accusing them of “a fix”, another successfully appealing a loss and even boxing great Lennox Lewis questioning some of their calls. Iran’s Ali Mazaheri cried foul when the heavyweight was disqualified after being warned three times for persistent holding against Cuban Jose Larduet Gomez despite leading by two points going into the second round. “It was a fix. I could have got a bronze easily if it hadn’t been for that,” an irate Mazaheri, who walked out of the ring before the decision was officially announced, told reporters through a translator.

Olympic Games
Champion Wiggins is ‘one of the greatest’ BRADLEY Wiggins is one of Great Britain’s greatest athletes of all time, according to the chairman of the British Olympic Association. The cyclist claimed his fourth Olympic gold, and seventh medal in total, in Wednesday’s time trial. This summer also saw Wiggins become the first Brit to win the Tour de France. “He is now unquestionably one of the greatest athletes we have seen in any disci-
pline in the history of Team GB,” said Lord Moynihan. The 32-year-old’s achievements, which span four Olympics, can now be ranked in the same bracket as rower Sir Steve Redgrave, who clinched gold medals in five consecutive Games, according to Moynihan. “He is right up there at the top and is now in hallowed territory - others would join him there, not least Steve Redgrave,” Moynihan added.
“What a great summer he has had and he deserves a lot of relaxation and enjoyment.” Moynihan’s view was echoed by BOA chief executive and Team GB chef de mission Andy Hunt. “Bradley Wiggins has cemented his position as one of the greatest British Olympians ever,” he said. “To claim an Olympic gold medal and the Tour de France championship in the span of less than four weeks
is nothing short of extraordinary.” After Wednesday’s race, Wiggins immediately looked forward to defending his medal in Rio de Janeiro in four years time. “The main number is that is gold number four,” he said. “So I have got to carry on to Rio now and make it five. “Just to be mentioned in the same breath as Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Chris Hoy is very special.”

Pearce sets sights on gold Suarez says crowd showed a ‘total lack of respect’ By Andrew Gwilym,
IN BRIEF
STUART Pearce saw his Great Britain side take a step closer to an Olympic medal by beating Uruguay on Wednesday night but insists gold is the only colour he is planning for. The 1-0 win over the South Americans at the Millennium Stadium, courtesy of Daniel Sturridge’s second goal of the tournament, saw Great Britain top Group A and set up a last-eight clash with South Korea in Cardiff tomorrow. And Pearce knows victory there will put he and his squad within sight of a podium finish. He said: “All the teams in the quarter-finals know they have two shots at getting a medal if you get to the semifinals. “If you are unsuccessful in the semi-finals you get the shot at the bronze so the importance of the next game is pretty high.” But Pearce only has sights for winning the competition and, after ensuring Uruguay follow fellow pre-tournament favourites Spain out of the tournament, believes his side might be coming to the
I’m the man! Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge (centre) celebrates scoring his second goal of the tournament as Team GB’s footballers beat Uruguay to set up a last-eight clash with South Korea in Cardiff on Saturday boil, right on cue for a potential last-four clash with Brazil. “We have only ever planned to win the tournament,” he said. “Brazil going into the tournament were vast favourites and their performance when we played them in Middlesbrough echoed those thoughts and they have done very well so far. “But football is quite funny,
when you get games coming thick and fast, every three days, the mental and physical side plays a big part and from here on in there will be some sides flat to the boards physically, so you can’t prejudge results at this stage.” Pearce also praised the fans in Cardiff, who respected the singing of God Save the Queen and were vociferous in their backing of the home side.
But one man not so enamoured with the home fans was Uruguay striker Luis Suarez, who was booed throughout and said there was a “total lack of respect” when some spectators booed the Uruguayan national anthem.. The Liverpool forward said: “I think they jeer me and they boo me here because they must be scared of facing a player like me. They
Cyclist killed after collision Romney’s horse and rider with Olympic shuttle bus unfazed by the hype A CYCLIST was killed after a collision with an Olympic media shuttle bus in east London on Wednesday evening, Scotland Yard said. The 28-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident which occurred at about 19.45 local time in Hackney. Police arrested a man, aged in his mid-60s, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Shuttle buses have been transporting thousands of journalists covering the Games between the Olympic Park in Stratford and central London. The collision is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police’s Traffic Investigation Unit.
RAFALCA, the dressage horse part-owned by Mitt Romney’s wife Ann, made a solid Olympic debut yesterday as rider Jan Ebeling ignored the media hype and political jibing surrounding them. “There certainly was a lot of media attention going on but I think it turned out to be a good thing for the sport. And I don’t really get distracted by these things,” the US rider said after finishing the first leg of the dressage contest. The Democrats have derided dressage as elitist and brandished Rafalca as more evidence that the US Republican presidential candidate is out of touch with the common man.
fear me, but that doesn’t affect me. “I’m hurt because we lost and we are going home. We all had a dream and that was to win the gold medal here. “I can take the abuse. I don’t mind. But I think it was a total lack of respect from the crowd to boo when we were trying to sing our national anthem. I think those things should not happen.’’
Sir Chris Hoy equals Redgrave’s golden tally GREAT Britain defended their team sprint Olympic title as Sir Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny and Philip Hindes powered to gold. Having set a world record of 42.747 seconds in qualifying for the gold medal race, the British team smashed it again to beat France in 42.600 seconds. The medal represents Hoy’s fifth gold, matching Sir Steve Redgrave’s record of Olympic titles in rowing. Germany beat Australia in the battle for the bronze medal. The triumph was also GB’s sixth medal of the day (at the time of going to press), and their third gold, after success in canoe slalom, double trap shooting, rowing and judo. Both Hoy and Kenny won gold in Beijing four years ago, but they were joined by Hindes, 19, who led from the front. Hoy will have to wait until Tuesday to get the chance to surpass Redgrave’s record, when he competes in the keirin, having been overlooked for the individual sprint in favour of Kenny. Kenny now has a second Olympic gold and third medal in all, while for Hindes it capped a remarkable rise to prominence for the Germanborn teenager who only joined the British team two years ago. There was drama in qualifying when Hindes wobbled out of the start gate and lost control of his bike before tumbling to the track at the beginning of the first bend as his team-mates rolled past him.
Cypriot sailor Cariolou way off the pace in RS-X SAILOR Andreas Cariolou has dropped further back in the standings, the Cypriot now lying 20th overall after the third day of racing and six races completed in the Men’s RS-X yesterday afternoon at Weymouth and Portland. Cariolou collected 87 net points and is currently 28 points behind the medal race spots, with Israeli competitor Shahar Zubari currently tenth overall with 59 net points. Cariolou, 29, completed the fifth race in 11th place but he then sailed his worst race of the event where he was a poor 30th.

Friends and rivals: Yohan Blake (left), who is the world’s fastest man this year, is aiming to bring an end to Usain Bolt’s reign as Olympic 100 metres champion By Julian Linden
Each man for himself M when ‘Beast’ races Bolt By Nick Mulvenney FOUR years ago, Yohan Blake was just out of school and watched at home in Jamaica as Usain Bolt set the sporting world alight at the Beijing Olympics. A few weeks later, the teenager joined Bolt’s training camp, where he turned his natural pace into a talent which many believe could bring an end to his compatriot’s reign as Olympic 100 metres champion on Sunday. The two, separated by three years, still train together under coach Glen Mills and remain firm friends who share a passion for cricket. Blake’s apparently fearsome nickname, ‘The Beast’, was coined by Bolt himself in recognition of the young sprinter’s prodigious appetite for training. When the two Jamaicans get into the blocks for the 100 metres final however, there will be no consideration for reputation or friendship. “Well Usain, we’re always friends, we always joke around in training every day. We always have fun. When we’re training we just have fun,” Blake, 22, told a news conference yesterday. “On the day it’s all business, win or draw we’re going to be still friendly, we’re just keeping a good chemistry going on into the Olympics, but when we line up at the line it’s going to be different. “It’s going to be all business - each man to their self.” Blake said he was fulfilling a “dream” by competing at his first Games but dismissed the idea that Bolt’s Olympic experience might give him an advantage. “Experience, for me, doesn’t work,” he said, bluntly. Having backed up his 2011 World Cham-
pionship 100m win soon afterwards with the second fastest 200m time of all time - behind Bolt’s world record naturally - Blake entered 2012 brimming with confidence. He established himself as favourite for London by stunning Bolt over both the 100m and 200m at the Jamaican trials, running the shorter sprint in a world leading 9.75 seconds, his personal best. Bolt later conceded he had been struggling with a hamstring injury caused by a stiff back but Blake was not going to allow that to diminish his rare feat. “A win is a win,” he said. Shorter than Bolt, Blake is rated a better starter and will be looking to get out into a lead before his compatriot gets into his considerable stride for the run to the line. “It’s going to be great,” Blake said. “You know in every year, in every race you always have surprises and everybody is waiting for this moment for four years, you know because you have a new person in the mix.” If he did break a mental barrier by beating Bolt in the Jamaican trials, Blake was in no hurry to add another psychological burden in its place by assuming the mantle of favourite. “There’s no pressure,” he said. “I don’t really think about it. Yes, I’m the fastest man in the world this year and the one to beat, but it’s different on the line.” Blake was at pains yesterday to point out that his nickname was not a reflection of his character off the track. “Some people say the Beast is bad,” he said. “Yes, the Beast is bad on the track. But after the track it’s different, he’s a calm guy.” The eagerly-awaited track and field programme begins today at the Olympic Stadium
ICHAEL Phelps became the first male swimmer to win the same event at three successive Olympics when he clinched the men’s 200 metres individual medley gold medal at the London Games last night. Phelps, who won the event at the Athens and Beijing Games, relegated compatriot and world champion Ryan Lochte to silver while Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh took bronze. Phelps led all the way and got his giant hands on the wall first in a time of one minute, 54.27 seconds, just outside Lochte’s world record of 1:54.00 that he set last year in the final at the Shanghai world championships. Lochte, close to exhaustion after winning bronze in the 200 backstroke half an hour before the medley, held on to finish second, just 0.63 behind his team mate. Cseh clocked 1:56.22 for the bronze. Phelps had joined forces with Lochte on Tuesday to win gold in the 4x200 freestyle relay and claim a record 19th Olympic medal, and the 200 individual medley victory on Thursday, gave the 27-yearold his 16th Olympic gold medal and 20th overall. Only two swimmers had ever won the same individual event at three successive Olympics, Australia’s Dawn Fraser, in 100 freestyle in 1956, 1960 and 1964, and Hungary’s Krisztina Egerszegi in 200 backstroke in 1988, 1992 and 1996. It is a feat that had eluded generations of the best male swimmers until Phelps, who had the chance of doing it in

four different events in London. He came fourth in the 400 individual medley and looked set to achieve the feat in his favoured 200 butterfly but was pipped by South Africa’s Chad le Clos on the final stroke. Phelps still has the 100 butterfly to come on his programme and he easily made it through to the final after the 200 metres IM medal ceremony , setting the fastest time of the two semi-finals. There was more drama at the Aquatics Centre last night, as Rebecca Soni broke the world record for the second time in 24 hours to win the women’s 200 metres breaststroke gold. the lead at the halfway stage to win in a time of two minutes, 19.59 seconds, slashing 0.41 off the previous record of 2:20.00 she set in Wednesday’s semi-finals. Japan’s Satomi Suzuki won the silver medal and the bronze went to Iuliia Efimova of Russia. Soni also won the four-lap event in Beijing four years ago and by winning in London she became the first woman to successfully defend a breaststroke title at the Olympics.
